Most of the modern high-current high-voltage pulsed power generators require several stages of pulse conditioning (pulse forming) to convert the multimicrosecond pulses of the Marx generator output to the 40-300-ns pulses required by a number of applications including X-ray radiography, pulsed high-current linear accelerators, Z-pinch, isentropic compression, and inertial fusion energy drivers. This makes the devices large, cumbersome to operate, and expensive. Sandia, in collaboration with a number of other institutions, is developing a new paradigm in pulsed power technology: the linear transformer driver (LTD) technology. This technological approach can provide very compact devices that can deliver very fast high-current and high-voltage pulses. The output pulse rise time and width can be easily tailored to the specific application needs. Trains of a large number of high-current pulses can be produced with variable interpulse separation from nanoseconds to milliseconds. Most importantly, these devices can be rep-rated to frequencies only limited by the capacitor specifications (usually 10 Hz). Their footprint, as compared with current day pulsed power accelerators, is considerably smaller since LTD do not require large oil and deionized water tanks. This makes them ideally suited for applications that require portability. In this paper, we present Sandia National Laboratories' broad spectrum of developmental effort to design construct and extensively validate the LTD pulsed power technology.

Summary form only given. We have developed and tested two prototype linear transformer drivers (LTDs): LTD III [1], which is a single LTD cavity that generates a peak electrical power of 79 GW, and Mykonos II [2,3], which is a two-cavity 142 GW LTD module. LTD III is driven by 20 bricks, each of which includes an 85-nH gas switch and two 60-nF capacitors. LTD III has been successfully tested on 3,500 shots at a charge voltage of +100 kV / -100 kV. The first 1,500 shots were conducted with UV-illuminated gas switches; the last 2,000, with new three-electrode field-distortion switches. Over the course of the last 2,000 shots, the variation of the output power generated by LTD III was 0.9% (one sigma) and the switch pre-fire rate was 1 in 10,000 switch shots after conditioning. Mykonos II is driven by 72 bricks altogether, 36 in each of the module's two cavities. Each brick includes a 115-nH switch and two 40-nH capacitors. Mykonos II is the first LTD module to drive a water-insulated transmission line. Mykonos has been successfully tested on 1,500 shots at a charge voltage of +90 kV / -90 k V. Over the course of these shots, the variation in the output power was 2.3% (one sigma) and the switch pre-fire rate was 1 in 11,000 switch shots after conditioning. Measured output-pulse parameters of LTD III and Mykonos II are consistent with circuit-model predictions. The results obtained suggest that LTDs are a viable prime-power source for next-generation pulsed-power accelerators.

The LTD technological approach can result in very compact devices that can deliver fast, high current and high voltage pulses straight out of the cavity without any complicated pulse forming and pulse-compression network. Through multistage inductively insulated voltage adders, the output pulse, increased in voltage amplitude, can be applied directly to the load. Because the output pulse rise time and width can be easily tailored (pulse shaped) to the specific application needs, the load may be a vacuum electron diode, a z-pinch wire array, a gas puff, a liner, an isentropic compression load (ICE) to study material behavior under very high magnetic fields, or a fusion energy (IFE) target. Ten 1-MA LTD cavities were originally designed and built to run in a vacuum or Magnetic Insulated Transmission Line (MITL) voltage adder configuration and, after successful operation in this mode, were modified and made capable to operate assembled in a de-ionized water insulated voltage adder. Special care has been taken to de-aerate the water and eliminate air bubbles. Our motivation is to test the advantages of water insulation compared to the MITL transmission approach. The desired effect is that the vacuum sheath electron current losses and pulse front erosion would be avoided without any new difficulties caused by the de-ionized water insulator. Presently, we have assembled and are testing a two-cavity, water insulated voltage adder with a liquid resistor load. Experimental results of up to 95kV capacitor charging are presented and compared with circuit code simulations.
