The new isotope ^{39}Na, the most neutron-rich sodium nucleus observed so far, was discovered at the RIKEN Nishina Center Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory using the projectile fragmentation of an intense ^{48}Ca beam at 345 MeV/nucleon on a beryllium target. Projectile fragments were separated and identified in flight with the large-acceptance two-stage separator BigRIPS. Nine ^{39}Na events have been unambiguously observed in this work and clearly establish the particle stability of ^{39}Na. Furthermore, the lack of observation of ^{35,36}Ne isotopes in this experiment significantly improves the overall confidence that ^{34}Ne is the neutron dripline nucleus of neon. These results provide new key information to understand nuclear binding and nuclear structure under extremely neutron-rich conditions. The newly established stability of ^{39}Na has a significant impact on nuclear models and theories predicting the neutron dripline and also provides a key to understanding the nuclear shell property of ^{39}Na at the neutron number N=28, which is normally a magic number.

Tissue injury prompts the release of a number of proalgesic molecules that induce acute and chronic pain by sensitizing pain-sensing neurons (nociceptors) to heat and mechanical stimuli. In contrast, many proalgesics have no effect on cold sensitivity or can inhibit cold-sensitive neurons and diminish cooling-mediated pain relief (analgesia). Nonetheless, cold pain (allodynia) is prevalent in many inflammatory and neuropathic pain settings, with little known of the mechanisms promoting pain vs. those dampening analgesia. Here, we show that cold allodynia induced by inflammation, nerve injury, and chemotherapeutics is abolished in mice lacking the neurotrophic factor receptor glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor family of receptors-α3 (GFRα3). Furthermore, established cold allodynia is blocked in animals treated with neutralizing antibodies against the GFRα3 ligand, artemin. In contrast, heat and mechanical pain are unchanged, and results show that, in striking contrast to the redundant mechanisms sensitizing other modalities after an insult, cold allodynia is mediated exclusively by a single molecular pathway, suggesting that artemin-GFRα3 signaling can be targeted to selectively treat cold pain.

Superconducting triplet quadrupoles (STQs) with cryocoolers characterize the BigRIPS in-flight separator and radioactive isotope (RI) beam delivery lines in the RIKEN RIBF (Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory) project. The STQ magnet is a large-aperture superferric quadrupole triplet cooled by liquid helium bath cooling method in a single cryostat. The STQ cryostat is designed to be operated continuously with a Gifford-McMahon (GM)/Joule-Thomson (JT) cryocooler and a GM cryocooler. We operate 22 STQ systems for more than twelve years without warm-up the magnets. We report operational experiences, such as degradation of cooling capacity and failures of compressors, in the long-term operation of the STQ systems. Replacement of ageing cryocooler unit is discussed to improve the cooling capacity.

The discovery of the important neutron-rich nucleus _{20}^{60}Ca_{40} and seven others near the limits of nuclear stability is reported from the fragmentation of a 345 MeV/u ^{70}Zn projectile beam on ^{9}Be targets at the radioactive ion-beam factory of the RIKEN Nishina Center. The produced fragments were analyzed and unambiguously identified using the BigRIPS two-stage in-flight separator. The eight new neutron-rich nuclei discovered, ^{47}P, ^{49}S, ^{52}Cl, ^{54}Ar, ^{57}K, ^{59,60}Ca, and ^{62}Sc, are the most neutron-rich isotopes of the respective elements. In addition, one event consistent with ^{59}K was registered. The results are compared with the drip lines predicted by a variety of mass models and it is found that the models in best agreement with the observed limits of existence in the explored region tend to predict the even-mass Ca isotopes to be bound out to at least ^{70}Ca.

Background Acneiform rash as an adverse event often affects the treatment by EGFR-TKIs. Since minocycline has been suggested to reduce the rash, we assessed the efficacy and safety of prophylactic administration of minocycline simultaneously during erlotinib treatment. Methods Patients of ECOG performance status 0-2 with advanced NSCLC, who had not been treated with EGFR-TKIs and would receive erlotinib treatment were randomized 1:1 into either group A, with minocycline or group B, without minocycline. The patients assigned to group A were started on minocycline 100mg/day orally for 8 weeks with erlotinib. Primary end point was the frequency of grade ≥2 rash acneiform by independent assessment in first 8 weeks. We expected the prophylactic minocycline decreased the incidence of grade ≥2 skin rash from 50% to 30%. The planned sample size was 280 patients with a = 0.025 (one-sided) and b = 0.10. Results Patients accrual was started in March 2015 and ended in June 2018 because of slow accrual. Ninety-four patients were finally enrolled and 93 were full-analysis set. The median age of the patients was 71 years old (range 45 to 89),58 patients were female. EGFR mutation status positive/negative/unknown=78/13/2 patients. The frequency of grade ≥2 rash acneiformby independent assessment was 33.3% [95%C.I. 20.0-49.0%] in group A vs. 44.2% [95%C.I. 29.1-60.1%] in group B (p = 0.296). The frequency by physicians’ evaluation was 31.3% [95%C.I. 18.7-48.8%] and 45.5% [95%C.I. 30.4-61.2%] (p = 0.161). However, the frequency of grade ≥2 rash acneiform on day 15 by physicians’ evaluation was significantly decreased (4.4% [95%C.I. 5.3-14.8%] in group A vs. 25.0% [95%C.I. 13.2-40.3%] in group B (p = 0.005)). As for toxicity, the incidence of any grade skin-related toxicity as pruritus (39.6% vs. 63.6%) and pain of skin (14.6% vs. 25.0%) was less common in group A. Hence, anorexia (41.7% vs 20.5%), nausea (25.0% vs 4.5%), and dysgeusia (22.9% vs 15.9%) occurred more frequently. Conclusions Although the frequency of acneiform rash tended to decrease, prophylactic administration of minocycline is not recommended because of increasing gastrointestinal toxicity. The BigRIPS in-flight fragment separator in the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) project was commissioned in 2007 and has been operated for six years. The RIBF accelerator complex has provided a wide range of heavy ion beams from deuteron to uranium with the energy of 250-345 MeV/nucleon. More than 70 experiments of unstable nuclei have been performed using the RI beams produced by the BigRIPS fragment separator. The production target of the RI beams is in close proximity to the first superconducting triplet quadrupoles (STQs) in the BigRIPS fragment separator, so that the STQ is exposed to the high radiation, which causes “beam heat loads” to the cryogenic system. The STQ consists of three air-core NbTi coils with the maximum field gradients of 24 T/m, assembled in the liquid-helium bath cryostat with the warm bore radius of 90 mm. This paper presents measurements of the radiation heat loads to the STQ cryostat for a number of experienced heavy ion beams from oxygen to uranium with the beam power of 1-7 kW. Corresponding radiation transport calculations are presented, and radiation doses and damages to the STQ system are also discussed.

We observed the atomic 1s and 2p states of π^{-} bound to ^{121}Sn nuclei as distinct peak structures in the missing mass spectra of the ^{122}Sn(d,^{3}He) nuclear reaction. A very intense deuteron beam and a spectrometer with a large angular acceptance let us achieve a potential of discovery, which includes the capability of determining the angle-dependent cross sections with high statistics. The 2p state in a Sn nucleus was observed for the first time. The binding energies and widths of the pionic states are determined and found to be consistent with previous experimental results of other Sn isotopes. The spectrum is measured at finite reaction angles for the first time. The formation cross sections at the reaction angles between 0° and 2° are determined. The observed reaction-angle dependence of each state is reproduced by theoretical calculations. However, the quantitative comparison with our high-precision data reveals a significant discrepancy between the measured and calculated formation cross sections of the pionic 1s state.

Aims In the brewing industry, microbial management is very important for stabilizing the quality of the product. We investigated the detailed microbial community of beer during fermentation and maturation, to manage beer microbiology in more detail. Methods and Results We brewed a beer (all-malt) and two beerlike beverages (half- and low-malt) in pilot-scale fermentation and investigated the microbial community of them using a next-generation sequencer (454 GS FLX titanium), quantitative PCR, flow cytometry and a culture-dependent method. From 28 to 88 genera of bacteria and from 9 to 38 genera of eukaryotic micro-organisms were detected in each sample. Almost all micro-organisms died out during the boiling process. However, bacteria belonging to the genera Acidovorax, Bacillus, Brevundimonas, Caulobacter, Chryseobacterium, Methylobacterium, Paenibacillus, Polaromonas, Pseudomonas, Ralstonia, Sphingomonas, Stenotrophomonas, Tepidimonas and Tissierella were detected at the early and middle stage of fermentation, even though their cell densities were low (below approx. 103 cells ml−1) and they were not almost detected at the end of fermentation. Conclusions We revealed that the microbial community of beer during fermentation and maturation is very diverse and several bacteria possibly survive during fermentation. Significance and Impact of the Study In this study, we revealed the detailed microbial communities of beer using next-generation sequencing. Some of the micro-organisms detected in this study were found in beer brewing process for the first time. Additionally, the possibility of growth of several bacteria at the early and middle stage of fermentation was suggested.

We have designed and installed a pillow seal system for the BigRIPS fragment separator at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) to facilitate remote maintenance in a radioactive environment. The pillow seal system is a device to connect a vacuum chamber and a beam tube. It allows quick attachment and detachment of vacuum connections in the BigRIPS separator and consists of a double diaphragm with a differential pumping system. The leakage rate achieved with this system is as low as 10–9 Pa m3/s. We have also designed and installed a local radiation-shielding system, integrated with the pillow seal system, to protect the superconducting magnets and to reduce the heat load on the cryogenic system. We present an overview of the pillow seal and the local shielding systems.

Although the use of single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SILC) is spreading rapidly, this technique has disadvantages. It does not allow for sufficient surgical views to be obtained or for intraoperative radiographic cholangiography to be performed. Fluorescent cholangiography using a preoperative intravenous injection of indocyanine green (ICG) may be useful for identifying the biliary tract during both SILC and conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy. For seven patients undergoing SILC, 1 ml of ICG (2.5 mg) was administered by intravenous injection before the surgery. The prototype fluorescent imaging system consisted of a xenon light source and a 30° laparoscope (diameter, 10 mm) equipped with a charge-coupled device camera capable of filtering out light with wavelengths shorter than 810 nm. The laparoscope was introduced through an umbilical trocar. Fluorescent cholangiography then was performed by changing the color images to fluorescent images using a foot switch during dissection of the triangle of Calot. Fluorescent cholangiography identified the confluence between the cystic duct and the common hepatic duct in all seven patients before and throughout the dissection of the triangle of Calot. The interval from the injection of ICG to the first obtained fluorescent cholangiography before dissection of the triangle of Calot ranged from 35 to 75 min. Fluorescent cholangiography enabled real-time identification of the extrahepatic bile ducts during SILC without necessitating catheterization of the bile duct. Such properties of fluorescent cholangiography are expected to be helpful for ensuring the safety of SILC and expanding the indications for the procedure.

Interaction cross sections (σI) for Ne isotopes from the stability line to the vicinity of neutron-drip line have been measured using the RIBF facility at RIKEN. Measurements have been performed for 20–32 Ne on C target at energies around 240 MeV/nucleon. A large enhancement of σI beyond the systematics of stable nuclei have been observed for neutron-rich Ne isotopes. The possible halo structures with lower orbital angular momentum for 29,31 Ne are discussed by the preliminary analysis.

Introduction: Laparoscopic hepatectomy has disadvantages in intraoperative diagnosis, because it offers limited visualization and palpability of the liver surface. Recently, we developed a novel fluorescent imaging technique using indocyanine green (ICG), which would enable identification of liver cancers during open hepatectomy. However, this technique has not yet been applied to laparoscopic hepatectomy. Materials and Surgical Technique: A patient with a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) located in Couinaud's segment II was administered ICG (0.5 mg per kg body weight) intravenous injection 5 d before surgery, as a routine liver function test. The prototype fluorescent imaging system was composed of a xenon light source and a laparoscope with a charge-coupled device camera that could filter out light with wavelengths below 810 nm. Intraoperatively, fluorescent imaging of the HCC was performed by changing color images to fluorescent images with a foot switch. Then, the fluorescing tumor was clearly identified on the visceral surface of segment II during mobilization of the left liver for resection of segments II and III. On the cut surface of the specimen, the tumor showed uniform fluorescence and was microscopically diagnosed as a well-differentiated HCC. Discussion: Laparoscopic fluorescent imaging using preoperative injection of ICG enabled real-time identification of HCC. This technique may be an easy and reliable tool to enhance the accuracy of intraoperative diagnosis during laparoscopic hepatectomy.

The structure of the neutron rich pf-shell nuclei 58Ti36, 60Cr36 and 62Cr38 was studied by proton inelastic scattering in inverse kinematics. Large quadrupole deformation lengths of 1.12(16) fm and 1.36(14) fm were obtained for 60Cr and 62Cr, respectively, which confirm the enhanced collectivity in these nuclei. An excited state was observed in 62Cr at 1180(10) keV with tentative assignment of J π = 4 + . The increase in the E x ( 4 + ) / E x ( 2 + ) ratio indicates that the nature of collectivity changes from vibrational to rotational in 62Cr and affords evidence for the development of static deformation. The excitation energy of the newly observed 2+ state in 58Ti (1046(17) keV) shows hindered collectivity. The contrast between the structures of Cr and Ti suggests that the contributions of both protons and neutrons are crucial for the large collectivity in Cr close to N = 40 . From the comparison to shell model calculations, the large collectivity is found to originate from the admixture of the pf- and gd-shells across the N = 40 sub-shell gap.

Two-dimensional modulation in synthetic Co-akermanite, Ca2CoSi2O7, has been precisely studied using synchrotron X-ray diffraction methods in the temperature range between 180 and 523 K to determine the temperature dependence of q (the magnitude of the primary wavevectors of modulation waves). Three kinds of plateau-like regions are observed for q ∼ 2/7, 3/10 and 4/13 in addition to the low-temperature commensurate phase (q = 1/3). Using a simulation method we were able to generate nearly commensurate structures. The most probable structure of incommensurate Co-akermanite is octagonal arrangements of the bundles along the c-axis, which are composed of four CaO6 arrays and a central array of CoO4 tetrahedra.

Martensitic transformation of a Heusler-type Ni 2.18 Mn 0.82 Ga (subscripts indicate relative numbers of atoms) single crystal was observed by neutron diffraction and by white X-ray diffraction of synchrotron radiation with decreasing temperature. The single crystal shows a shape memory effect due to a thermo-elastic martensitic transformation at around 340 K. Both neutron and high intensity white X-ray beams are suitable for the observation of the transformation process, because neutron beam penetrates far into the material and the white X-ray beam exhibits many Laue spots simultaneouly. We observed the change of Laue spots during the transformation process. As a result, the single crystal shows a cubic Heusler structure at 400 K. One of the cubic axes is along the direction of crystal growth. In the process of decreasing temperature, the crystal divided into many small variants with tetragonal structures. Some of them have an axis, [1 0 0], [0 1 0] or [0 0 1], along the direction of crystal growth. The others are made by rotating the unit cell around a 〈1 1 1〉 axis of cubic structure or by forming the twin of these rotated unit cells. An angle of rotation is at most a few degrees. At 103 K the transformation is almost complete and many tetragonal structures are rearranged into several tetragonal structures, the axes of which, [1 0 0], [0 1 0] or [0 0 1], are along the direction of the crystal growth.

Hemihepatic portal vein embolization (PVE) concomitantly induces atrophy in embolized and compensatory hypertrophy in nonembolized hepatic lobes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the involvement of growth stimulatory and inhibitory factors in these hepatic lobes after PVE. Liver specimens from the embolized and nonembolized lobes of ten patients who underwent hepatectomy (8-22 days) after undergoing PVE were obtained. Proliferation and apoptosis were examined immunohistochemically using Ki-67 and the Tdt-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end-labeling method. The expression of transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) was also examined by immunohistochemical staining. PVE induced hepatocyte apoptosis in the embolized lobe and hepatocyte proliferation in the nonembolized lobe. TGF-alpha expression in the hepatocytes of the nonembolized lobe was markedly increased, whereas TGF-alpha was also overexpressed, albeit moderately, in the embolized lobe. In contrast, TGF-beta expression in the hepatocytes of the embolized lobe was significantly increased, and TGF-beta expression was also increased, although to a lesser extent, in the nonembolized lobe. The degree of volume changes of the nonembolized lobe and the embolized lobe after PVE was statistically correlated with the ratios of TGF-alpha and TGF-beta expression in these lobes (r = 0.886, P.0001). In conclusion, these findings indicate that TGF-alpha and TGF-beta expression (assessed by immunohistochemical staining) increase in relation to hepatocyte proliferation and apoptosis, respectively, after PVE in humans and the balance of the two factors may contribute to hepatic atrophy and hypertrophy concomitantly observed in this model.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a complete system of healing that developed in China about 3000 years ago, and includes herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion and massage, etc. In recent decades the use of TCM has become more popular in China and throughout the world. Traditional Japanese medicine has been used for 1500 years and includes Kampo-yaku (herbal medicine), acupuncture and acupressure. Kampo is now widely practised in Japan and is fully integrated into the modern health-care system. Kampo is based on TCM but has been adapted to Japanese culture. In this paper we review the history and characteristics of TCM and traditional Japanese medicine, i.e. the selection of traditional Chinese herbal medicine treatments based on differential diagnosis, and treatment formulations specific for the ‘Sho’ (the patient's symptoms at a given moment) of Japanese Kampo - and look at the prospects for these forms of medicine.

We examined the effects of the angiotensin-II receptor antagonist candesartan on non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) and circulating adiponectin concentrations in KKAy obese mice with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The KKAy mice were randomly assigned to receive either candesartan at a once-daily dose of 10 mg/kg ( n = 5) or placebo ( n = 5). The differences in liver weight, histological evaluation of hepatic lipid infiltration, serum adiponectin concentration and hepatic adiponectin mRNA levels between the two groups were determined on day 7 after treatment was initiated. Candesartan-treated mice demonstrated significantly lower liver weights and reduced lipid droplets in hepatic cells compared with control mice. The circulating adiponectin levels and hepatic expression of adiponectin mRNA were significantly higher in candesartan-treated mice than control mice. These results suggest that candesartan might alleviate NAFL through elevation of circulating adiponectin levels in KKAy obese mice with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

結節性多発性血管炎の70歳, 男性。ステロイドと免疫抑制剤により, 寛解状態となったが両足底, 足背部のピリピリ感, 冷感, また外部からの痛みを感じず, 足が地面についている感覚を認めないという異常知覚が継続した。東洋医学的診断に基づきツムラ牛車腎気丸エキスを投与したところ, visual analogue scale にて自覚症状の改善が認められた。さらに, 修治ブシ末を加えたとてろ, 著明改善した。てれまで, 結節性多発性血管炎に対し牛車腎気丸が有用であったとの報告はない。末梢神経伝導速度に影響ないてとから, 直接的な末梢神経障害の改善は認められないが, 牛車腎気丸は末梢神経障害の自覚症状の改善には有効と考えられ, 結節性多発性血管炎患者の治療上有用となる可能性が示唆された。その作用機序として, 糖尿病性末梢神経障害と同様のメカニズムが推測される。

This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between plasma adiponectin levels and plasma lipid and lipoprotein levels in post-menopausal women (PMW) receiving hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Various clinical and biochemical parameters, including plasma lipid and lipoprotein concentrations and adiponectin levels, were measured in 54 healthy PMW before and after 3 and 6 months of HRT. Control groups consisted of women aged < 40 years ( n = 20) or > 60 years ( n = 17). PMW had significantly lower baseline adiponectin levels compared with the younger or older control groups, but adiponectin concentrations were not significantly altered after 3 or 6 months of HRT. Adiponectin levels in PMW were positively correlated with plasma high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels and were negatively correlated with body mass index and triglyceride levels. Our data suggest that circulating adiponectin may contribute to lipid homeostasis in PMW. Further studies are needed to elucidate the effects of HRT and oestrogen on adiponectin levels.

We aimed to evaluate the effect of a Japanese herbal medicine, Hochu-ekki-to (TJ-41), on daily activity in a murine model of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). CFS was induced by repeated injection ofBrucella abortus(BA) antigen every 2 weeks. TJ-41 was orally administered to mice in a dose of 500 mg/kg/day for 1 week before injecting BA and for 4 weeks thereafter. We evaluated daily running activity in mice receiving TJ-41 as compared with that in untreated mice. Survival of both mouse groups was also monitored during the observation period. Body weight (BW), spleen weight (SW), SW/ BW ratio and expression levels of interleukin-10 (IL-10) mRNA in spleen were determined in both groups at the time of sacrifice. The daily activity was significantly higher in the treated group than in the control. Two mice in the untreated group died 2 days after the second injection of BA, whereas no mice in the group treated with TJ-41 died. The SW and SW/BW ratio were significantly lower in the treated mice than in the control. Suppressed IL-10 mRNA levels were observed in the spleens of the mice treated with TJ-41. Our data suggest that Hochu-ekki-to might possess an inhibitory effect on the marked decrease in running activity following BA injection.

Background and Aims: The aim of the present study was to clarify relationship between macroscopic and microscopic features of herpes simplex esophagitis (HSE), and localization of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1)-infected cells in esophageal lesions from autopsy cases of histopathologically proven HSE. Methods: The study comprised morphological, immunohistochemical, cultural and electron microscopic investigations for 24 HSE patients collected from 1307 serial autopsy cases in the past 10 years. Results: Macroscopic characteristics of HSE were divided into three types. Types I and II showed small punched-out lesions with and without raised margins, respectively. Type III revealed that multiple ulcers became confluent like a map. Microscopic findings showed that the HSV infection process seemed to begin in squamous epithelium and to induce vertical cellular change into the intact epithelial layer. Intranuclear inclusion bodies were observed at the centers of lesions, and ballooning changes of squamous cells at the margins. Both localization of HSV-1-infected cells and presence of HSV-1 in the esophageal lesions were confirmed with immunohistochemical staining, viral culture and electron microscopy. Conclusion: The present results suggest that the macroscopic and microscopic postmortem features of HSE may provide useful information for clinical diagnosis of HSE.

Expression of cardiac and gastric ghrelin messenger (m) RNA, together with heart and body weights, were measured in leptin-deficient ( ob) and leptin receptor-deficient ( db) mice with heart failure induced by viral myocarditis. Significant elevations in cardiac ghrelin mRNA levels and heart weight were observed in ob and db mice 10 days after viral inoculation compared with baseline values. Expression of gastric ghrelin mRNA was not upregulated in ob and db mice on day 10. The elevated expression of cardiac ghrelin mRNA seems to compensate for the lack of upregulation in gastric ghrelin mRNA.

Patients with severe liver diseases, such as liver cirrhosis and biliary atresia, have low natural killer (NK) cell activity. The relations between NK activity and measures of liver function, including serum levels of total bilirubin, total bile acids, bile acid components, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase, and platelet count were examined in patients with biliary atresia (6 boys and 6 girls; mean age, 4.8 ± 5.7 years) and patients with liver cirrhosis due to hepatitis C virus infection (10 men and 2 women; mean age, 54.3 ± 13.8 years). Univariate analysis showed that platelet count was positively correlated with NK activity in patients with biliary atresia (r = 0.611, P < 0.05). Serum levels of free chenodeoxycholic acid were negatively correlated with NK activity both in patients with biliary atresia (r = −0.647, P < 0.05) and in patients with hepatitis C virus-related liver cirrhosis (r = −0.876, P < 0.01). None of the other free bile acids or conjugated bile acids or other indicators of liver function were correlated with NK activity. Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that only levels of free chenodeoxycholic acid were independently correlated with NK activity. All patients with biliary atresia underwent liver transplantation from living related donors. NK activity had increased significantly two months after transplantation (from 24.1 ± 20.2% to 49.2 ± 12.5%, P < 0.01). In contrast, levels of free chenodeoxycholic acid in transplant recipients had decreased significantly two months after transplantation (from 1.22 ± 1.16 to 0.26 ± 0.21 μmol/l, P < 0.05). In conclusion, in patients with biliary atresia or liver cirrhosis, NK activity in peripheral blood decreases, mostly because of free chenodeoxycholic acid.

Background: The empiric evaluation of liver consistency is currently used to plan the surgical strategy. The aim of this study was to verify the feasibility of the objective measurement of liver consistency and to check its correlation with liver fibrosis and liver functional reserve. Study Design: Fifty-two consecutive patients who underwent hepatic resections in our department were enrolled. The indications for liver resection were hepatocellular carcinoma in 36 patients, metastatic liver tumors in 12 patients, and other conditions in 4 patients. Liver consistency was measured with a new tactile sensor. A fibrosis index was calculated as an expression of the percentage of fibrotic tissue. Liver consistency was compared with the degree of liver fibrosis observed in histologic specimens (fibrosis index) and with liver function parameters. Results: Liver stiffness showed a significant positive cor- relation with fibrosis index (r = 0.887, p < 0.0001). Liver stiffness also showed significant positive correlation with the indocyanine green test (r = 0.631, p < 0.0001) by a univariate analysis. The indocyanine green test and platelet count were independently and significantly associated with liver stiffness by a multiple regression analysis. In five patients, the liver stiffness values measured intraoperatively differed markedly from those expected from the indocyanine green test values. In these patients, the operative procedures were finally selected based on the liver stiffness measured with the tactile sensor and good clinical outcomes were obtained. Conclusions: These results show for the first time that liver stiffness can be clinically assessed quantitatively by means of the tactile sensor. The tactile sensor adequately estimates liver stiffness and this estimation is well correlated with liver fibrosis and functional reserve. Two superferric quadrupoles with a pole-tip radius of 170 mm and a maximum pole-tip field of 2.4 T are designed for the BigRIPS projectile fragment separator at RIKEN. Taking the feasibility of coil winding into account, the shape of quadrupole coil has been optimized.

The neutron drip line up to fluorine has been investigated by the projectile fragmentation of a 94.1A MeV 40 Ar beam at the fragment separator RIPS at RIKEN. A new neutron-rich isotope, 31 F, has been observed for the first time while clear evidence for the particle instability of 24,25 N, 27,28 O and 30 F has been obtained. The sudden change in stability from oxygen to fluorine may demonstrate the onset of deformation for the neutron-rich fluorine isotopes.

Abstract The comparison of today's slickline capabilities with its early usage for routine remedial workovers and maintenance best illustrates the significant advances that have occurred within slickline technology. Today, for example, slickline can be used to I) set and retrieve slickline-retrievable safety valves or plugs, 2) open and close downhole circulating devices, 3)retrieve accurate depthhime data for correlating with memory production surveys for well diagnostics (problem identification) reservoir description, or flow analysis, 4) provide accurate correlation of tubing casing collars, and 5) pull and run multiple flow controls set packers and other downhole equipment without explosives; setting monobore tools; and other perform other well interventions that are dependent upon measurement accuracy. Less than a decade ago, slickline was only considered for mechanical well workovers. This paper will discuss the newly developed technology that allows slickline to economically provide alternatives to services traditionally reserved for other, more costly options. Case histories will be used to illustrate the enlarged scope of services and how the equipment combines to provide the innovative low cost service options that the industry has been seeking. Introduction Economic initiatives are usually the drivers of new technologies, and thus, reacting to the significant decline in the oilfield climate during the last decade, no era has been as momentous in providing stimuli for operational change. Unfortunately, operators who are seeking new methods usually look to new technologies as the potential problem solvers, and in so doing, overlook enhancements to the older, proven technologies that could provide the cost efficient alternatives they want. This has been the case with slickline. Until the resurgence of investigation into new strategies to meet the oilfield cost constraints of the last decade, slickline service was only considered for routine mechanical workovers. Who would have considered using slickline to set a packer in the early 90's. The capabilities that have changed the profile of slickline service from one of routine mechanical well work overs to a multi-faceted service technology are derived from the new slickline tools that can be used independently or combined to further enhance the scope of services. The equipment includes an electronic triggering device (ETD) that enables safe detonation of explosive devices, a battery-operated, electro-mechanical tool that sets wellbore devices on slickline and braided line without explosives, an electronic measurement system that automatically corrects measurement inaccuracies resulting from line stretch and environmental stress factors, a slickline collar locator (SLCL) that accurately verifies collar locations in a tubing string, and data job loggers or acquisition software systems that connect to the electronic measurement system to graphically record dynamic wireline information.

Automatic magnetic measurement for bar specimens of soft magnetic materials was studied by means of the yoke method. A new magnetizing apparatus was designed to reduce to zero the difference between the magnetic flux densities induced in the center and the end search coil, in order to correct the self-demagnetization. This method allows accurate, magnetic measurements to be made for bar specimens of magnetic pure iron, as well as for the conventional ring specimens. On the other hand, a quicker measurement speed of the hysteresis loop and a larger sectional area shows an increase in the apparent coercive force due to the phenomenon of the delay of magnetization in this measurement method.
