Rationale & Objective: Both hypo- and hyperkalemia can cause fatal cardiac arrhythmias. Although predialysis serum potassium level is a known modifiable risk factor for death in patients receiving hemodialysis, especially for hypokalemia, this risk may be underestimated. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between predialysis serum potassium level and death in incident hemodialysis patients and whether there is an optimum level. Study Design: Prospective multicenter cohort study. Setting & Participants: 1,117 incident hemodialysis patients (aged >18 years) from the Netherlands Cooperative Study on the Adequacy of Dialysis-2 study were included and followed from their first hemodialysis treatment until death, transplantation, switch to peritoneal dialysis, or a maximum of 10 years. Exposure: Predialysis serum potassium levels were obtained every 6 months and divided into 6 categories: ≤4.0 mmol/L, >4.0 mmol/L to ≤4.5 mmol/L, >4.5 mmol/L to ≤5.0 mmol/L, >5.0 mmol/L to ≤5.5 mmol/L (reference), >5.5 mmol/L to ≤6.0 mmol/L, and >6.0 mmol/L. Outcomes: 6-month all-cause mortality. Analytical Approach: Cox proportional hazards and restricted cubic spline analyses with time-dependent predialysis serum potassium levels were used to calculate the adjusted HRs for death. Results: At baseline, the mean age of the patients was 63 years (standard deviation, 14 years), 58% were men, 26% smoked, 24% had diabetes, 32% had cardiovascular disease, the mean serum potassium level was 5.0 mmol/L (standard deviation, 0.8 mmol/L), 7% had a low subjective global assessment score, and the median residual kidney function was 3.5 mL/min/1.73 m2 (IQR, 1.4-4.8 mL/min/1.73 m2). During the 10-year follow-up, 555 (50%) deaths were observed. Multivariable adjusted HRs for death according to the 6 potassium categories were as follows: 1.42 (95% CI, 1.01-1.99), 1.09 (95% CI, 0.82-1.45), 1.21 (95% CI, 0.94-1.56), 1 (reference), 0.95 (95% CI, 0.71-1.28), and 1.32 (95% CI, 0.97-1.81). Limitations: Shorter intervals between potassium measurements would have allowed for more precise mortality risk estimations. Conclusions: We found a U-shaped relationship between serum potassium level and death in incident hemodialysis patients. A low predialysis serum potassium level was associated with a 1.4-fold stronger risk of death than the optimal level of approximately 5.1 mmol/L. These results may imply the cautious use of potassium-lowering therapy and a potassium-restricted diet in patients receiving hemodialysis.

Background: Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) usually occurs during the treatment phase of ischemic disease, which is closely related to high morbidity and mortality. Promoting neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity are effective neural recovery strategies for CIRI. Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) has been shown to play a neuroprotective role in some neurological diseases. In the current study, we evaluated the effect and possible mechanism of AS-IV in CIRI rats., Methods: The middle cerebral artery occlusion reperfusion (MCAO/R) model was established in rats to simulate the occurrence of human CIRI. First, we determined the cerebral injury on the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th day after cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) surgery by neurological deficit detection, TTC staining, TUNEL staining and Western blot analysis. Furthermore, rats were pre administered with AS-IV and then subjected to cerebral I/R surgery. Brains were collected on the 3rd day to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of AS-IV., Results: Our results showed that on the 3rd day after I/R, the neurological impairment score and infarct volume were highest, the levels of apoptosis and expression of Caspase3 and Bax reached the peak. AS-IV treatment apparently attenuated neurological dysfunction, reduced infarct volume and pathological damage, promoted the neurogenesis, and alleviated the pathological damage caused by cerebral I/R involved in thickening and blurring of synaptic membranes, reduction of microtubules and synaptic vesicles, and loss of synaptic cleft. Our study also showed that AS-IV promoted the transcription and expression of the peroxisome proliferators-activated receptors γ (PPARγ) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), increased the expression of phosphorylation of tyrosine kinase receptor B (TrkB) and downstream PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway proteins. Notably, when GW9662, an inhibitor of PPARγ was administered with AS-IV, the neuroprotective effect of AS-IV was reduced., Conclusions: These findings suggested that AS-IV has neuroprotective function in CIRI rats, and its molecular mechanism may depend on the phosphatidylinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (PKB)/Akt signalling pathway activated by PPARγ. Background: This prospective study aimed to investigate the influence of weight difference between implanted prosthesis and removed bone in cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) on hip awareness and patient-reported outcomes., Methods: A total of 48 patients (56 hips) who underwent primary THA were prospectively enrolled. Implanted prosthesis and removed bone were weighed intraoperatively. Forgotten Joint Score (FJS) and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) scores were obtained before and at 1 and 3 months after surgery. Patients were divided into groups A, B, and C according to the percentile of the weight difference., Results: The mean weight difference of the implanted prosthesis and removed bone was 117.97 ± 47.35 g. A negative correlation was found among the weight differences of the three groups and 1- and 3-month postoperative FJS (correlation coefficients, -0.331 and -0.734, respectively). A positive correlation was found among the weight difference of the three groups and 3-month postoperative WOMAC (correlation coefficient, 0.403). A significant difference in 3-month postoperative FJS and WOMAC scores was found among the three groups. The mean 3-month postoperative FJS (79.00) of group C was significantly lower than that of group A (93.32) ( P  < 0.05). The mean WOMAC score (15.83) of group A was significantly lower than that of group C (23.67) ( P  < 0.05)., Conclusion: The implanted prosthesis is larger than the removed bone in cementless THA. The weight difference is negatively correlated with hip function. Multimetallic synergistic effects have the potential to improve CO 2 cycloesterification and Knoevenagel reaction processes, outperforming monometallic MOFs. The results demonstrate superior performance in these processes. To investigate this, we created and characterized a selection of single-component Ln(III)-MOFs (Ln=Eu, Tb, Gd, Dy, Ho) and high-entropy lanthanide-organic framework (HE-LnMOF) using solvent-thermal conditions. The experiments revealed that HE-LnMOF exhibited heightened catalytic efficiency in CO 2 cycloesterification and Knoevenagel reactions compared to single-component Ln(III) MOFs. Moreover, the HE-LnMOF displayed significant stability, maintaining their structural integrity after five cycles while sustaining elevated conversion and selectivity rates. The feasible mechanisms of catalytic reactions were also discussed. HE-LnMOF possess multiple unsaturated metal centers, acting as Lewis acid sites, with oxygen atoms connecting the metal, and hydroxyl groups on the ligand serving as base sites. Organic acid-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as catalysts always suffer from weak stability and low recyclability due to the accumulation of organic oxidative products in the DES phase. Herein, a completely inorganic deep eutectic solvent (IDES) ZnCl 2 /PA with zinc chloride (ZnCl 2 ) and phosphoric acid (PA) as precursors is constructed to realize liquid-liquid interface catalysis for desulfurization of fuel and product self-separation for the first time. Owing to the inorganic nature, the organic oxidative products are accumulated at the interface between the IDES and fuel rather than the IDES phase. With this unique feature, the IDES can be reused for at least 15 times without any further treatment in oxidative desulfurization process, showing a state-of-the-art cycle-regeneration stability. Moreover, compared with the reported organic DESs, the IDES also reveals more attractive catalytic oxidative desulfurization performance. Experimental and theoretical studies indicate that the strong coordination Zn···O═P and the strong adsorption energy between IDES and sulfides enhance the activation of H 2 O 2 to reactive oxygen species, leading to the superior catalytic performance in oxidative desulfurization of fuel., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

The 3D structured light field manipulated by a digital-micromirror-device (DMD)-based digital hologram has demonstrated its superiority in fast-fabricating stereo nanostructures. However, this technique intrinsically suffers from defects of light intensity in generating modulated focal spots, which prevents from achieving high-precision micro/nanodevices. In this Letter, we have demonstrated a compensation approach based on adapting spatial voxel density for fabricating optical metalenses with ultrahigh precision. The modulated focal spot experiences intensity fluctuations of up to 3% by changing the spatial position, leading to a 20% variation of the structural dimension in fabrication. By altering the voxel density to improve the uniformity of the laser cumulative exposure dosage over the fabrication region, we achieved an increased dimensional uniformity from 94.4% to 97.6% in fabricated pillars. This approach enables fast fabrication of metalenses capable of sub-diffraction focusing of 0.44λ/NA with the increased mainlobe-sidelobe ratio from 1:0.34 to 1:0.14. A 6 × 5 supercritical lens array is fabricated within 2 min, paving a way for the fast fabrication of large-scale photonic devices.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of lateral hinge fracture (LHF) on the early effectiveness of supramalleolar osteotomy (SMO) and to explore the related risk factors for LHF., Methods: A total of 39 patients (39 feet) with varus-type ankle osteoarthritis treated with SMO between January 2016 and December 2022 were analyzed retrospectively. There were 10 males and 29 females, aged from 41 to 71 years (mean, 57.7 years). According to Takakura stage, there were 6 feet in stage Ⅱ, 19 feet in stage Ⅲa, and 14 feet in stage Ⅲb. The LHF was recognized by the immediate postoperative X-ray film. The osteotomy healing time and the changes of pain visual analogue scale (VAS) score, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score, tibial anterior surface angle (TAS), tibial lateral surface angle (TLS), and tibiotalar angle (TT) before and after operation were compared between patients with and without LHF. The age, gender, affected side, body mass index, Takakura stage, preoperative VAS score, preoperative AOFAS score, preoperative TAS, preoperative TLS, preoperative TT, SMO correction angle, osteotomy distraction, distance from medial osteotomy to ankle joint line (MD), and distance from lateral osteotomy to ankle joint line (LD) were compared between with and without LHF patients, and further logistic regression analysis was used to screen the risk factors of LHF during SMO., Results: All patients were followed up 12-54 months (mean, 27.1 months). During operation, 13 feet developed LHF (group A) and 26 feet did not develop LHF (group B). X-ray film reexamination showed that 1 patient in group A complicated with tibial articular surface cleft fracture had delayed osteotomy and healed successfully after plaster fixation; the osteotomy of other patients healed, and there was no significant difference in healing time between the two groups ( P >0.05). At last follow-up, there were significant differences in VAS score, AOFAS score, TAS, TLS, and TT of the two groups when compared with preoperative ones ( P <0.05), but there was no significant difference in the changes of above indicators before and after operation between the two groups ( P >0.05). The differences in SMO correction angle, osteotomy distraction, and LD between with and without LHF patients were significant ( P <0.05), and further logistic regression analysis showed that excessive LD was the risk factor of LHF during SMO ( P <0.05)., Conclusion: Too high or too low lateral hinge position during SMO may lead to LHF, but as long as appropriate treatment and rehabilitation measurements are taken, the early effectiveness is similar to that of patients without LHF.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in clinical outcomes and alignment of the ipsilateral knee and ankle in patients with varus ankle osteoarthritis after supramalleolar osteotomy (SMO)., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 23 patients (24 ankles) with Takakura II, IIIa and IIIb ankle osteoarthritis treated with SMO between May 2017 and March 2022. The radiologic parameters of ankles contained medial distal tibial angle (TAS), tibiotalar angle (TT), tibial lateral surface (TLS), tibial plafond inclination (TPI) and talar inclination (TI). The radiologic parameters of knees contained medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA), joint line convergence angle (JLCA), the knee joint line orientation relative to ground (G-KJLO) and WBL. Hip-knee-ankle angle (HKA) was also collected. The Takakura system was used for evaluating the ankle osteoarthritis and the Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) system was used for evaluating the knee osteoarthritis. Clinical evaluation of the ankle joints contained American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), range of motion (ROM) and visual analogue scale (VAS). Clinical evaluation of the knee joints contained Japanese Orthopaedic Association Scores (JOA), ROM, VAS., Results: The mean follow-up times were 20.3 ± 7.3 months (range 12-38). According to the radiologic evaluation, the TAS increased from preoperative 84.7° ± 2.0° to 91.2° ± 1.8° at the last follow-up (P < 0.001). The TPI and TI decreased from 4.4° ± 4.2° and 11.0° ± 5.2° to 0.1° ± 4.7° and 4.1° ± 4.8° (P < 0.001 for both). The TT angel improved from 9.5° ± 4.1° to 4.9° ± 3.3° (P < 0.001). No significant differences were found regarding MPTA, JLCA, G-KJLO, knee WBL and HKA (P > 0.05 for all). The Takakura stage improved after SMO (P < 0.001) whilst the KL stage maintains the similar lever (P > 0.05). According to the clinical evaluation, the AOFAS significantly increased from 67.5 ± 10.6 to 88.5 ± 9.3 and the VAS of the ankle decreased from 4.7 ± 1.6 to 1.2 ± 1.1, whilst there were no changes on VAS and even the JOA and knee ROM after SMO (P > 0.05 for all)., Conclusions: SMO can alleviate the symptoms of varus ankle osteoarthritis and delay the time for ankle replacement or arthrodesis by redistributing the abnormal stress of the ankle and restoring the congruence of the tibiotalar joint. In addition, it did not induce the clinical symptoms of knee without compromising lower limb alignment or knee joint line orientation in the short term., Level of Evidence: Level IV case series., (© 2023. Removal of trace impurities for natural gas purification coupled with waste gas conversion is highly desired in industry. We here report a type of porous ionic liquids (PILs) that can realize the continuous flow separation of CH 4 /CO 2 /H 2 S and the conversion of the captured H 2 S to useful products. The PILs are synthesized through a step-by-step surface modification of ionic liquids (ILs) onto UiO-66-OH nanocrystals. The introduction of free tertiary amine groups on the nanocrystal surface endows these PILs with an exceptional ability to enrich H 2 S from CO 2 and CH 4 with impressive selectivity, while the permanent pores of UiO-66-OH act as containers to store an exceptionally higher amount of the selectively captured H 2 S than the corresponding nonporous ILs. Simultaneously, the tertiary amines as dual functional moieties offer effective catalytic sites for the conversion of the H 2 S stored in PILs into 3-mercaptoisobutyric acid, a key intermediate required for the synthesis of Captopril (an antihypertensive drug). Molecular dynamics, density functional theory calculations and Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations help understand both the mechanisms of separation and catalysis performance, confirming that the tertiary amines as well as the permanent pores in UiO-66-OH play vital roles in the whole procedure., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Purpose: A novel percutaneous distractor with the advantage of axial and direct distraction was designed for the minimally invasive treatment of calcaneal fractures. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical results and complications of a novel distractor combined with sinus tarsi approach (STA) in treatment of the joint depression-type of calcaneal fractures., Methods: Fifty-four patients with the depression-type of calcaneal fractures (30 Sanders type II, 22 Sanders type III, 2 Sanders type IV) who were subjected to the novel distractor combined with STA were retrospectively assessed. Calcaneal height, width, and length; Bohler's angle; and the Gissane angle were evaluated pre-operatively and post-operatively. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) and visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores from the last follow-up. Complications were also recorded., Results: Fifty-two patients achieved an average follow-up of 24.3 months (range 18 to 34 months), and two patients were lost to follow-up six months post-operatively. There was significant difference between pre-operative and post-operative calcaneal height, width, and length; Bohler's angle; and Gissane angle (p < 0.01), but no significant difference was detected between the post-operative and normal side Bohler's angle (p > 0.05). The AOFAS ankle and hind foot score was 88.4 ± 6.6, and the VAS score was 1.9 ± 0.7 at the last follow-up. Nine (17.3%) patients developed complications: One experienced skin necrosis and two had screws loosening; three patients developed early degenerative changes of the subtalar joint; two had no symptoms; one had light pain around the subtalar joint without medical treatment; complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) developed in one patient after seven months post-operatively; and two developed transient ankle stiffness., Conclusion: The novel distractor combined with the STA effectively reconstructs the facet depression-type of calcaneal fractures (sanders type II and III) with minimal complications., (© 2022. Inflammatory pain is the most important clinical symptom of inflammatory diseases. Despite intensive research into inflammatory pain mechanisms, the majority of analgesics available are based on mechanistic classes of compounds that have been known for many years, as a result, inflammatory pain control remains a challenge for drug design in the context of clinically unmet needs in terms of safety and efficacy. A growing literature supports that pro-inflammatory cytokine signaling plays a crucial role in the development of inflammatory pain. Modulation of the pro-inflammatory cytokine may hold the key to improved pain management. Previous studies have reported that dorsomorphin played key roles in inflammation. But the role of dorsomorphin in the formalin-induced inflammatory nociception in mice has never been reported. Here, we report a new function of dorsomorphin which can inhibit formalin-induced inflammatory nociception in mice. Purpose: Antibiotic-loaded bone cement (ALBC) was usually used to prevent periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) in primary total knee arthroplasty (PTKA), but whether to use ALBC or plain bone cement in PTKA remains unclear. We aimed to compare the occurrence rate of PJI using two different cements, and to investigate the efficacy of different antibiotic types and doses administered in preventing surgical site infection (SSI) with ALBC., Methods: The availability of ALBC for preventing PJI was evaluated by using a systematic review and meta-analysis referring to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Existing articles until December 2021 involving PTKA patients with both ALBC and plain bone cement cohorts were scanned by searching "total knee arthroplasty", "antibiotic-loaded cement", "antibiotic prophylaxis", "antibiotic-impregnated cement" and "antibiotic-laden cement" in the database of PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library. Subgroup analysis included the effectiveness of different antibiotic types and doses in preventing SSI with ALBC. The modified Jadad scale was employed to score the qualities of included articles., Results: Eleven quantitative studies were enrolled, including 34,159 knees undergoing PTKA. The meta-analysis results demonstrated that the use of prophylactic ALBC could significantly reduce the prevalence of deep incisional SSI after PTKA, whereas there was no significant reduction in the rate of superficial incisional SSI. Moreover, gentamicin-loaded cement was effective in preventing deep incisional SSI, and the use of high-dose ALBC significantly reduced the rate of deep incisional SSI after PTKA. Besides, no significant adverse reactions and complications were stated during the use of ALBC in PTKA., Conclusion: The preventive application of ALBC during PTKA could reduce the rates of deep PJI. Furthermore, bone cement containing gentamicin and high-dose ALBC could even better prevent deep infection after PTKA. Postsynthetic modification (PSM) has been widely used in porous crystalline materials to gain better performance in adsorptive separation of gases or hydrocarbons. We here report that guest adsorption selectivity in a kind of nonporous crystalline materials, namely nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs), can be readily and precisely tuned via a facile substituent-size-dependent solid-vapor PSM method. Before PSM, NACs of pillar[4]arene[1]quinone EtP4Q1 show negligible selectivity for C 5 hydrocarbons. PSM with a larger substituent, cyclopentylamine, onto EtP4Q1 NACs does not improve the selectivity, while EtP4Q1 NACs after PSM with a slightly smaller substituent, cyclobutylamine, is endowed with very high preference of n-pentane over cyclopentane. Comprehensive structural analyses confirm that the intermolecular interactions among the host compounds and host-guest interactions between the adsorbent and the adsorbate are the two major factors in determining the guest selectivity., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Pyrrolidine, an important feedstock in the chemical industry, is commonly produced via vapor-phase catalytic ammoniation of tetrahydrofuran (THF). Obtaining pyrrolidine with high purity and low energy cost has extremely high economic and environmental values. Here we offer a rapid and energy-saving method for adsorptive separation of pyrrolidine and THF by using nonporous adaptive crystals of per-ethyl pillar[6]arene (EtP6). EtP6 crystals show a superior preference towards pyrrolidine in 50 : 50 (v/v) pyrrolidine/THF mixture vapor, resulting in rapid separation. The purity of pyrrolidine reaches 95% in 15 min of separation, and after 2 h, the purity is found to be 99.9%. Single-crystal structures demonstrate that the selectivity is based on the stability difference of host-guest structures after uptake of THF or pyrrolidine and non-covalent interactions in the crystals. The operation of near-field and far-field can be employed to display holographic and nanoprinting images, which significantly improves the information density. Previous studies have proposed some approaches to display the images independently or simultaneously, but cannot satisfy these two characteristics in a single structure under the same incident light. Here, a single layer multifunctional metasurface is proposed to display a nanoprinting image and a holographic image independently and simultaneously. By tailoring the dimensions of each nanobricks and adopting different orientation angle, the amplitude and phase can be artificially designed. Moreover, enabled by the simulated annealing algorithm, we take the impact of both amplitude and phase of each nanobrick into consideration, which eliminates the unnecessary influence of amplitude on holographic image. Compared with previous work, our metasurfaces markedly improve the quality of holographic image with simple structures while not affecting the nanoprinting image. To be exact, it breaks the coupling between the near-field and far-field, achieving independent and simultaneous control of both fields. Our proposed metasurfaces carry characteristics of simple manufacture, little crosstalk, and great compactness, which provides novel applications for image displays, optical storage and information technology.

Achromatic metalens have the potential to significantly reduce the size and complexity of broadband imaging systems. A large variety of achromatic metalens has been proposed and most of them have the fixed achromatic band that cannot be actively modified. However, band-tunable is an important function in practical applications such as fluorescence microscopic imaging and optical detection. Here, we propose a bilayer metalens that can switch achromatic bands by taking the advantage of the high refractive index contrast of Sb 2 S 3 between amorphous and crystalline state. By switching the state of Sb 2 S 3 , the achromatic band can be reversibly switched between the red region of visible spectrum (650-830 nm) and the near-infrared spectrum (830-1100 nm). This band-tunable design indicates a novel (to our knowledge) method to solve the problem of achromatic focusing in an ultrabroad band. The metalens have an average focusing efficiency of over 35% and 55% in two bands while maintaining diffraction-limited performance. Moreover, through proper design, we can combine different functionalities in two bands such as combining achromatic focusing and diffractive focusing. The proposed metalens have numerous potential applications in tunable displaying, detecting devices and multifunctional devices.

A depolarizer, a kind of optical element that converts polarized light to unpolarized light, has been found massive applications in classical optics. However, depolarizers based on metasurface which can be applied in integrated optics have rarely been proposed. In this paper, an electronically controlled metasurface depolarizer is demonstrated based on the time-domain integral average method and nano-material barium titanate. It obtains emergent light with a degree of polarization reduced to 2.5% when hit by linearly polarized light at 633 nm, and has a transmission efficiency greater than 72%. This depolarizing metasurface can be designed on-demand, immunizing the degree of the emergent light from its size, and has the simple electronic control with high-speed response.

Background: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is considered to be one of the most challenging complications of joint replacement, which remains unpredictable. As a simple and emerging biomarker, calprotectin (CLP) has been considered to be useful in ruling out PJI in recent years. The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy and sensitivity of CLP in the diagnosis of PJI., Methods: We searched and screened the publications from PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library from database establishment to June 2021. Subsequently, Stata version 16.0 software was used to combine the pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio (PLR), negative likelihood ratio (NLR), diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), operating characteristic curve, and area under the curve (AUC). Heterogeneity across articles was evaluated by the I 2 statistics. Finally, sources of heterogeneity were detected by subgroup analysis based on study design, detection method, sample size, and cutoff values., Results: A total of 7 studies were included in our study, comprising 525 patients. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, PLR, and NLR of CLP for PJI diagnosis were 0.94(95% CI 0.87-0.98), 0.93(95% CI 0.87-0.96), 13.65(95% CI 6.89-27.08), and 0.06(95% CI 0.02-0.15), respectively, while the DOR and AUC were 222.33(95% CI 52.52-941.11) and 0.98 (95% CI 0.96-0.99), respectively., Conclusion: Synovial CLP is a reliable biomarker and can be used as a diagnostic criterion for PJI in the future. However, the uncertainty resulting from the poor study numbers and sample sizes limit our ability to definitely draw conclusions on the basis of our study., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

The COVID-19 pandemic is a huge challenge to education systems. Most governments around the world have temporarily closed schools, universities, and colleges. At the same time, teachers and students are encouraged to use the online and distance learning programs and platforms as an alternative. In the present study, we proposed a series of innovative solutions in Medical Molecular Biology education during the COVID-19 pandemic in China, including a flipped classroom model, live streaming course, chat Apps, and scientific papers on COVID-19 as additional learning material. Our results demonstrated that these innovations not only help teachers to maintain the teaching process as usual but also be useful for protecting students from psychological trauma. The multifocal metalens with an adjustable intensity has great potential in many applications such as the multi-imaging system, but it is less studied. In this paper, by combining the electro-optic material barium titanate (BTO) with the Pancharatnam-Berry phase, an electrically modulated bifocal metalens in a visible light band is innovatively proposed. Due to the electro-optic effect, we can control the refractive index of the BTO nanofins to vary between 2.4 and 3.07 by applying different voltages (0-60 V). Thus, the method of modulating the intensity ratio of the two focal points is applying an electric field. It is different from using phase change materials or changing the ellipticity of incident light, the strategies proposed in previous studies. Moreover, when the applied voltage is 0 V or 60 V, the bifocal metalens becomes a single focal metalens with different focal lengths, and the full width at half maximum of each focal point is close to the diffraction limit. It has great potential in applications of optical storage, communication and imaging systems.

The possibility of engineering well-defined pores into liquid materials is fascinating from both a conceptual and an applications point of view. Although the concept of porous liquids was proposed in 2007, these materials had remained hypothetical due to the technical challenges associated with their synthesis. Over the past five years, however, reports of the successful construction of porous liquids based on existing porous scaffolds, such as coordination cages, organic cages, metal-organic frameworks, porous carbons, zeolites, and porous polymers, have started to emerge. Here, the focus is on these early reports of porous liquids as prototypes in the field, classified according to the previously defined types of porous liquids. Particular attention will be paid to design strategies and structure-property relationships. Porous liquids have already exhibited promising applications in gas storage, transportation, and chemical separations. Thus, they show great potential for use in the chemical industry. Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic degenerative disease of the central nervous system common in middle-aged and elderly people, which has a serious impact on patients' cognitive and motor functions. Exercise can improve the nonmotor symptoms of PD patients, but the optimal type of exercise for the cognitive function of patients is unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study is the impact of 12 weeks of Wuqinxi exercise on the cognitive and motor function in PD patients., Methods: Thirty PD patients participated in the study and were randomly assigned to two groups: Wuqinxi group ( n  = 15) or stretching group ( n  = 15). All the participants performed a 12-week exercise program twice a week, 90 min/session. The assessments were conducted before and after exercise intervention, included cognitive function (frontal assessment battery (FAB); Stroop test I and II), motor functions (Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Part III (UPDRS-III); timed up and go (TUG))., Results: We found the FAB and Stroop I scores were significantly higher in the Wuqinxi group than in the stretching group. Participants in the Wuqinxi group significantly improved their UPDRS-III (17.73 ± 9.88) and TUG (10.50 ± 1.79) score after 12 weeks of training intervention., Conclusion: The results show that the use of Wuqinxi for rehabilitation therapy for cognition is feasible, widely accepted, and effective in patients with Parkinson's disease. The zoom metalens has been a research hotspot for metasurfaces in recent years. There are currently a variety of zoom methods, including dual metalenses, micro-electromechanical system metalenses, polydimethylsiloxane metalenses and Alvarez metalenses. However, for most metalenses, zooming is achieved by manipulating the relative displacement of two or more metasurfaces. Therefore, these methods seem inadequate when faced with more precise zooming requirements, and the precise control of the phase distribution cannot be achieved. In this paper, we innovatively propose an electrically-driven zoom metalens (EZM) of one-dimensional based on dynamically controlling barium titanate (BaTiO 3 , BTO) antennas. Using the electro-optic effect of BTO crystals, we can apply a voltage to change the refractive index of BTO nanopillars ( n = 2.4-3.6), thereby accurately controlling the phase distribution of column antennas. The proposed EZM can achieve 5× zoom ( f = 10-50 μm), with advantages, such as high-speed optical amplitude modulation, ultra-compactness, flexibility and replicability. It can be applied in fields that require ultra-compact beam focusing, zoom imaging, and microscopic measuring.

Focus-tunable metalenses play an indispensable role in the development of integrated optical systems. In this paper, the phase change material Sb 2 S 3 is used in a thermally modulated varifocal metalens based on PB-phase for the first time. Sb 2 S 3 not only has a real part of refractive index shift between the amorphous and crystalline state but also has low losses in both amorphous and crystalline states in the near-infrared region. By switching Sb 2 S 3 between the two states, a metalens doublet with a variable focal length is proposed. Moreover, the full width at half maximum of each focal point is close to the diffraction limit. And the focusing efficiency can be over 50% for the two focal points. Together with the advantage of precise thermal control, the proposed metalens has great potential in the application of multi-functional devices, biomedical science, communication and imaging.

Background: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a disabling disease, which often involves young patients. Recently, various hip-preserving surgeries were recommended to delay total hip arthroplasty (THA)., Questions/purposes: This study aimed to compare clinical outcomes and survival rate in the long-term follow-up between core decompression combined with a non-vascularized autologous fibular graft (group A) and an allogeneic fibular graft (group B) for the treatment of ONFH., Patients and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 117 patients (153 hips) with ONFH (Association Research Circulation Osseous [ARCO] stages IIa to IIIc) who underwent the abovementioned hip-preserving surgeries between January 2003 and June 2012. The mean (range) follow-up times (years) were 12.9 (7-16) and 9.3 (6-16) in groups A and B, respectively. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the Harris Hip Score (HHS), visual analog scale (VAS) score, and forgotten joint score (FJS). A survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method. The end point was THA., Results: Groups A and B showed postoperative improvements, respectively, in HHS from 65 ± 7.2 to 80.3 ± 14.5 and from 66 ± 5.9 to 82.4 ± 13.6 (p < 0.05), and in VAS score from 6.3 ± 1.1 to 2.3 ± 1.6 and from 6.1 ± 1 to 2.2 ± 2.2 (p < 0.05). However, no significant differences in the HHS, VAS score, and hip FJS at the last follow-up (p > 0.05) and 15-year survival rate (84.1% and 86%, respectively, p > 0.05) were found between groups A and B., Conclusions: Autologous and allogeneic fibular grafts can attain equally good clinical outcomes and high survival rates in long-term follow-up, and thus can greatly delay THA owing to good bone osseointegration and sufficient mechanical support. Notably, the ratio of failure will increase when patients were more than 37 years old., Level of Evidence: Level III, therapeutic study.
