Abstract: Modelling uncertainties at small scales, i.e. high $k$ in the power spectrum $P(k)$, due to baryonic feedback, nonlinear structure growth and the fact that galaxies are biased tracers poses a significant obstacle to fully leverage the constraining power of the Euclid wide-field survey. $k$-cut cosmic shear has recently been proposed as a method to optimally remove sensitivity to these scales while preserving usable information. In this paper we generalise the $k$-cut cosmic shear formalism to $3 \times 2$ point statistics and estimate the loss of information for different $k$-cuts in a $3 \times 2$ point analysis of the {\it Euclid} data. Extending the Fisher matrix analysis of Euclid Collaboration: Blanchard et al. (2019), we assess the degradation in constraining power for different $k$-cuts. We find that taking a $k$-cut at $2.6 \ h \ {\rm Mpc} ^{-1}$ yields a dark energy Figure of Merit (FOM) of 1018. This is comparable to taking a weak lensing cut at $\ell = 5000$ and a galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing cut at $\ell = 3000$ in a traditional $3 \times 2$ point analysis. We also find that the fraction of the observed galaxies used in the photometric clustering part of the analysis is one of the main drivers of the FOM. Removing $50 \% \ (90 \%)$ of the clustering galaxies decreases the FOM by $19 \% \ (62 \%)$. Given that the FOM depends so heavily on the fraction of galaxies used in the clustering analysis, extensive efforts should be made to handle the real-world systematics present when extending the analysis beyond the luminous red galaxy (LRG) sample. Abstract: We present a study of the population of bright early-type dwarf galaxies in the multiple-cluster system Abell 901/902. We use data from the STAGES survey and COMBO-17 to investigate the relation between the color and structural properties of the dwarfs and their location in the cluster. The definition of the dwarf sample is based on the central surface brightness and includes galaxies in the luminosity range -16 >= M_B >~-19 mag. Using a fit to the color magnitude relation of the dwarfs, our sample is divided into a red and blue subsample. We find a color-density relation in the projected radial distribution of the dwarf sample: at the same luminosity dwarfs with redder colors are located closer to the cluster centers than their bluer counterparts. Furthermore, the redder dwarfs are on average more compact and rounder than the bluer dwarfs. These findings are consistent with theoretical expectations assuming that bright early-type dwarfs are the remnants of transformed late-type disk galaxies involving processes such as ram pressure stripping and galaxy harassment. This indicates that a considerable fraction of dwarf elliptical galaxies in clusters are the results of transformation processes related to interactions with their host cluster., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A, typo corrected in abstract

Abstract: Cosmological constraints from key probes of the Euclid imaging survey rely critically on the accurate determination of the true redshift distributions, $n(z)$, of tomographic redshift bins. We determine whether the mean redshift, $$, of ten Euclid tomographic redshift bins can be calibrated to the Euclid target uncertainties of $\sigma()$ is measured in each tomographic redshift bin to an accuracy of order 0.01 or better. By measuring the clustering redshifts on subsets of the full Flagship area, we construct scaling relations that allow us to extrapolate the method performance to larger sky areas than are currently available in the mock. For the full expected Euclid, BOSS, and DESI overlap region of approximately 6000 deg$^{2}$, the uncertainties attainable by clustering redshifts exceeds the Euclid requirement by at least a factor of three for both $n(z)$ models considered, although systematic biases limit the accuracy. Clustering redshifts are an extremely effective method for redshift calibration for Euclid if the sources of systematic biases can be determined and removed, or calibrated-out with sufficiently realistic simulations. Loureiro et al., We present a tomographic weak lensing analysis of the Kilo Degree Survey Data Release 4 (KiDS-1000), using a new pseudo angular power spectrum estimator (pseudo-Cℓ) under development for the ESA Euclid mission. Over 21 million galaxies with shape information are divided into five tomographic redshift bins, ranging from 0.1 to 1.2 in photometric redshift. Abstract: The Euclid space telescope will survey a large dataset of cosmic voids traced by dense samples of galaxies. In this work we estimate its expected performance when exploiting angular photometric void clustering, galaxy weak lensing and their cross-correlation. To this aim, we implement a Fisher matrix approach tailored for voids from the Euclid photometric dataset and present the first forecasts on cosmological parameters that include the void-lensing correlation. We examine two different probe settings, pessimistic and optimistic, both for void clustering and galaxy lensing. We carry out forecast analyses in four model cosmologies, accounting for a varying total neutrino mass, $M_\nu$, and a dynamical dark energy (DE) equation of state, $w(z)$, described by the CPL parametrisation. We find that void clustering constraints on $h$ and $\Omega_b$ are competitive with galaxy lensing alone, while errors on $n_s$ decrease thanks to the orthogonality of the two probes in the 2D-projected parameter space. We also note that, as a whole, the inclusion of the void-lensing cross-correlation signal improves parameter constraints by $10-15\%$, and enhances the joint void clustering and galaxy lensing Figure of Merit (FoM) by $10\%$ and $25\%$, in the pessimistic and optimistic scenarios, respectively. Finally, when further combining with the spectroscopic galaxy clustering, assumed as an independent probe, we find that, in the most competitive case, the FoM increases by a factor of 4 with respect to the combination of weak lensing and spectroscopic galaxy clustering taken as independent probes. The forecasts presented in this work show that photometric void-clustering and its cross-correlation with galaxy lensing deserve to be exploited in the data analysis of the Euclid galaxy survey and promise to improve its constraining power, especially on $h$, $\Omega_b$, the neutrino mass, and the DE evolution., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures - published in A&A

Abstract: Euclid Consortium: M. S. Cagliari et al., [Context] The ESA Euclid mission will produce photometric galaxy samples over 15 000 square degrees of the sky that will be rich for clustering and weak lensing statistics. The accuracy of the cosmological constraints derived from these measurements will depend on the knowledge of the underlying redshift distributions based on photometric redshift calibrations., [Aims] A new approach is proposed to use the stacked spectra from Euclid slitless spectroscopy to augment broad-band photometric information to constrain the redshift distribution with spectral energy distribution fitting. The high spectral resolution available in the stacked spectra complements the photometry and helps to break the colour-redshift degeneracy and constrain the redshift distribution of galaxy samples., [Methods] We modelled the stacked spectra as a linear mixture of spectral templates. The mixture may be inverted to infer the underlying redshift distribution using constrained regression algorithms. We demonstrate the method on simulated Vera C. Rubin Observatory and Euclid mock survey data sets based on the Euclid Flagship mock galaxy catalogue. We assess the accuracy of the reconstruction by considering the inference of the baryon acoustic scale from angular two-point correlation function measurements., [Results] We selected mock photometric galaxy samples at redshift z > 1 using the self-organising map algorithm. Considering the idealised case without dust attenuation, we find that the redshift distributions of these samples can be recovered with 0.5% accuracy on the baryon acoustic scale. The estimates are not significantly degraded by the spectroscopic measurement noise due to the large sample size. However, the error degrades to 2% when the dust attenuation model is left free. Abstract: Euclid Consortium: S. Nesseris et al., [Context] The standard cosmological model is based on the fundamental assumptions of a spatially homogeneous and isotropic universe on large scales. An observational detection of a violation of these assumptions at any redshift would immediately indicate the presence of new physics., [Aims] We quantify the ability of the Euclid mission, together with contemporary surveys, to improve the current sensitivity of null tests of the canonical cosmological constant Λ and the cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model in the redshift range 0, [Methods] We considered both currently available data and simulated Euclid and external data products based on a ΛCDM fiducial model, an evolving dark energy model assuming the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parameterization or an inhomogeneous Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi model with a cosmological constant Λ, and carried out two separate but complementary analyses: a machine learning reconstruction of the null tests based on genetic algorithms, and a theory-agnostic parametric approach based on Taylor expansion and binning of the data, in order to avoid assumptions about any particular model., [Results] We find that in combination with external probes, Euclid can improve current constraints on null tests of the ΛCDM by approximately a factor of three when using the machine learning approach and by a further factor of two in the case of the parametric approach. However, we also find that in certain cases, the parametric approach may be biased against or missing some features of models far from ΛCDM., [Conclusions] Our analysis highlights the importance of synergies between Euclid and other surveys. Improving the photo-z quality is a major challenge but is needed to advance our understanding of cosmology. In this paper we explore how the synergies between narrow-band photometric data and large imaging surveys can be exploited to improve broadband photometric redshifts. We used a multi-task learning (MTL) network to improve broadband photo-z estimates by simultaneously predicting the broadband photo-z and the narrow-band photometry from the broadband photometry. The narrow-band photometry is only required in the training field, which also enables better photo-z predictions for the galaxies without narrow-band photometry in the wide field. This technique was tested with data from the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS) in the COSMOS field. We find that the method predicts photo-zs that are 13% more precise down to magnitude iAB < 23; the outlier rate is also 40% lower when compared to the baseline network. Furthermore, MTL reduces the photo-z bias for high-redshift galaxies, improving the redshift distributions for tomographic bins with z > 1. Applying this technique to deeper samples is crucial for future surveys such as Euclid or LSST. For simulated data, training on a sample with iAB < 23, the method reduces the photo-z scatter by 16% for all galaxies with iAB < 25. Abstract: Euclid Consortium: N. Hamaus et al., Euclid is poised to survey galaxies across a cosmological volume of unprecedented size, providing observations of more than a billion objects distributed over a third of the full sky. Approximately 20 million of these galaxies will have their spectroscopy available, allowing us to map the three-dimensional large-scale structure of the Universe in great detail. This paper investigates prospects for the detection of cosmic voids therein and the unique benefit they provide for cosmological studies. In particular, we study the imprints of dynamic (redshift-space) and geometric (Alcock–Paczynski) distortions of average void shapes and their constraining power on the growth of structure and cosmological distance ratios. To this end, we made use of the Flagship mock catalog, a state-of-the-art simulation of the data expected to be observed with Euclid. We arranged the data into four adjacent redshift bins, each of which contains about 11 000 voids and we estimated the stacked void-galaxy cross-correlation function in every bin. Fitting a linear-theory model to the data, we obtained constraints on f/b and DMH, where f is the linear growth rate of density fluctuations, b the galaxy bias, DM the comoving angular diameter distance, and H the Hubble rate. In addition, we marginalized over two nuisance parameters included in our model to account for unknown systematic effects in the analysis. With this approach, Euclid will be able to reach a relative precision of about 4% on measurements of f/b and 0.5% on DMH in each redshift bin. Better modeling or calibration of the nuisance parameters may further increase this precision to 1% and 0.4%, respectively. Our results show that the exploitation of cosmic voids in Euclid will provide competitive constraints on cosmology even as a stand-alone probe. Abstract: Pair-instability supernovae are theorized supernovae that have not yet been observationally confirmed. They are predicted to exist in low-metallicity environments. Because overall metallicity becomes lower at higher redshifts, deep near-infrared transient surveys probing high-redshift supernovae are suitable to discover pair-instability supernovae. The Euclid satellite, which is planned to be launched in 2023, has a near-infrared wide-field instrument that is suitable for a high-redshift supernova survey. The Euclid Deep Survey is planned to make regular observations of three Euclid Deep Fields (40 deg2 in total) spanning the Euclid's 6 year primary mission period. While the observations of the Euclid Deep Fields are not frequent, we show that the predicted long duration of pair-instability supernovae would allow us to search for high-redshift pair-instability supernovae with the Euclid Deep Survey. Based on the current observational plan of the Euclid mission, we conduct survey simulations in order to estimate the expected numbers of pair-instability supernova discoveries. We find that up to several hundred pair-instability supernovae at z < ~ 3.5 can be discovered within the Euclid Deep Survey. We also show that pair-instability supernova candidates can be efficiently identified by their duration and color that can be determined with the current Euclid Deep Survey plan. We conclude that the Euclid mission can lead to the first confirmation of pair-instability supernovae if their event rates are as high as those predicted by recent theoretical studies. The host galaxy conditions for rapid supermassive black hole growth are poorly understood. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies often exhibit high accretion rates and are hypothesized to be prototypes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) at an early stage of their evolution. Aims. We present adaptive optics (AO) assisted VLT MUSE NFM observations of Mrk 1044, the nearest super-Eddington accreting NLS1. Together with archival MUSE WFM data, we aim to understand the host galaxy processes that drive Mrk 1044’s black hole accretion. Methods. We extracted the faint stellar continuum emission from the AGN-deblended host and performed spatially resolved emission line diagnostics with an unprecedented resolution. Combining both MUSE WFM and NFM-AO observations, we used a kinematic model of a thin rotating disk to trace the stellar and ionized gas motion from 10 kpc galaxy scales down to ∼30 pc around the nucleus. Results. Mrk 1044’s stellar kinematics follow circular rotation, whereas the ionized gas shows tenuous spiral features in the center. We resolve a compact star-forming circumnuclear ellipse (CNE) that has a semi-minor axis of 306 pc. Within this CNE, the gas is metal-rich and its line ratios are entirely consistent with excitation by star formation. With an integrated star formation rate of 0.19 ± 0.05 M⊙ yr−1, the CNE contributes 27% of the galaxy-wide star formation. Conclusions. We conclude that Mrk 1044’s nuclear activity has not yet affected the circumnuclear star formation. Thus, Mrk 1044 is consistent with the idea that NLS1s are young AGN. A simple mass budget consideration suggests that the circumnuclear star formation and AGN phase are connected and the patterns in the ionized gas velocity field are a signature of the ongoing AGN feeding. © N. Abstract: An accurate covariance matrix is essential for obtaining reliable cosmological results when using a Gaussian likelihood. In this paper we study the covariance of pseudo-$C_\ell$ estimates of tomographic cosmic shear power spectra. Using two existing publicly available codes in combination, we calculate the full covariance matrix, including mode-coupling contributions arising from both partial sky coverage and non-linear structure growth. For three different sky masks, we compare the theoretical covariance matrix to that estimated from publicly available N-body weak lensing simulations, finding good agreement. We find that as a more extreme sky cut is applied, a corresponding increase in both Gaussian off-diagonal covariance and non-Gaussian super-sample covariance is observed in both theory and simulations, in accordance with expectations. Studying the different contributions to the covariance in detail, we find that the Gaussian covariance dominates along the main diagonal and the closest off-diagonals, but further away from the main diagonal the super-sample covariance is dominant. Forming mock constraints in parameters describing matter clustering and dark energy, we find that neglecting non-Gaussian contributions to the covariance can lead to underestimating the true size of confidence regions by up to 70 per cent. The dominant non-Gaussian covariance component is the super-sample covariance, but neglecting the smaller connected non-Gaussian covariance can still lead to the underestimation of uncertainties by 10--20 per cent. A real cosmological analysis will require marginalisation over many nuisance parameters, which will decrease the relative importance of all cosmological contributions to the covariance, so these values should be taken as upper limits on the importance of each component., 15 pages, 8 figures; matches version accepted by A&A; code available at https://github.com/robinupham/shear_pcl_cov

Abstract: The interaction between Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and their host galaxies is scarcely resolved. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are believed to represent AGN at early stages of their evolution and allow to observe AGN feeding and feedback processes at high accretion rates. We apply a spectroastrometric analysis to VLT MUSE NFM-AO observations of Mrk 1044, a nearby super-Eddington accreting NLS1. This allows us to map two ionised gas outflows traced by [O$\,$III] which have velocities of $-560\pm20\,{\rm km\:s}^{-1}$ and $-144 \pm 5 \,{\rm km\:s}^{-1}$. Both outflows are spatially unresolved and located close to the galaxy nucleus ($, 17 pages. 12 figures. Re-submitted to A&A after minor revision. Comments welcome

Abstract: Jiménez-Muñoz, A., et al., The Euclid satellite, to be launched by ESA in 2022, will be a major instrument for cosmology for the next decades. Euclid is composed of two instruments: The Visible instrument and the Near Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP). In this work, we estimate the implications of correlated readout noise in the NISP detectors for the final in-flight flux measurements. Considering the multiple accumulated readout mode, for which the UTR (Up The Ramp) exposure frames are averaged in groups, we derive an analytical expression for the noise covariance matrix between groups in the presence of correlated noise. We also characterize the correlated readout noise properties in the NISP engineering-grade detectors using long dark integrations. For this purpose, we assume a (1/f ) α-like noise model and fit the model parameters to the data, obtaining typical values of s = - 19.7+0.8 1.1 e− Hz−0.5, = ( - ) f 5.2+ 10- Hz knee 1.3 1.8 3 and a = - 1.24+0.21 0.26. Furthermore, via realistic simulations and using a maximum likelihood flux estimator we derive the bias between the input flux and the recovered one. We find that using our analytical expression for the covariance matrix of the correlated readout noise we diminish this bias by up to a factor of four with respect to the white noise approximation for the covariance matrix. Finally, we conclude that the final bias on the in-flight NISP flux measurements should still be negligible even in the white readout noise approximation, which is taken as a baseline for the Euclid on-board processing to estimate the on-sky flux. Abstract: Background:Fixed dystonia leads to an immobile abnormal posturing of the affected limb. There is an ongoing debate whether this condition is psychogenic in origin. Case Report:We present a 21‐year‐old violinist with fixed dystonia after an acute overuse injury with a transient cyanosis but no signs for psychological trauma. After Incobotulinumtoxin injection, symptoms subsided within 8 hours. Discussion:Our case corroborates the notion that fixed dystonias after minor injuries are functional disorders. It underlines the necessity of a biopsychosocial approach to functional disorders, considering the possibility of an overlay between organic and non‐organic disorders.

Abstract: Time is of critical importance in acute stroke management. The establishment of thrombectomy now adds to the complexity and interdisciplinarity of the initial phase. In non-medical high-fidelity situations, such as aviation, crew resource management (CRM) has proven to be highly efficient. It has therefore also been implemented in professional cardiovascular life support training. In a setting where every minute counts, CRM and regular training of the high-fidelity stroke team could offer ways to improve treatment of acute stroke patients.We evaluated the effects of a CRM-based stroke team with regular simulation training on the quality of care (e.g. door to needle time and thrombolysis rate) as well as on staff satisfaction and perceived patient safety in the emergency department of a tertiary care neurocenter.We implemented a dedicated stroke team consisting of 7 persons who are notified by a collective call via speed dial and conceived a simulator-based team training for all new stroke team members which we conduct at monthly intervals. We recorded door to needle times of all consecutive patients, staff satisfaction in the emergency room and the acceptance of this new learning format.This approach led to a relevant and sustained reduction of the mean door to needle time to less than 30 min. It improved perceived patient safety in residents with professional experience of less than 2 years. There was a very high acceptance within the stroke team training and staff and its usefulness was judged to be very high.Even though our data do not allow positive effects on patient outcomes to be inferred, the implementation of a CRM-based stroke team and simulator training has had multiple positive effects on the workflow and work satisfaction in the treatment of acute stroke patients.

Abstract: We present a study of the population of bright early-type dwarf galaxies in the multiple-cluster system Abell 901/902. We use data from the STAGES survey and COMBO-17 to investigate the relation between the color and structural properties of the dwarfs and their location in the cluster. The definition of the dwarf sample is based on the central surface brightness and includes galaxies in the luminosity range -16 >= M_B >~-19 mag. Using a fit to the color magnitude relation of the dwarfs, our sample is divided into a red and blue subsample. We find a color-density relation in the projected radial distribution of the dwarf sample: at the same luminosity dwarfs with redder colors are located closer to the cluster centers than their bluer counterparts. Furthermore, the redder dwarfs are on average more compact and rounder than the bluer dwarfs. These findings are consistent with theoretical expectations assuming that bright early-type dwarfs are the remnants of transformed late-type disk galaxies involving processes such as ram pressure stripping and galaxy harassment. Abstract: Seit einigen Jahren erfahrt die Teilentfernung der Gaumentonsillen als Lasereingriff eine eindrucksvolle Renaissance. In einer retrospektiven Analyse der Patienten unserer Klinik aus dem Zeitraum von 1993–2007 werden unsere Behandlungsergebnisse bei 258 Kindern (Durchschnittsalter 4,3 Jahre alt) dargestellt. Der mittlere Nachbeobachtungszeitraum liegt bei 4,6 Jahren (1 Monat bis 14 Jahre). Indikationsstellung war in allen Fallen die Obstruktion durch reizlose hyperplastische Tonsillen bei leerer Anamnese fur chronisch rezidivierende Tonsillitiden. Bei einem Patienten kam zu einer – nicht operationspflichtigen – Nachblutung (0,38%). Die Schlafapnoe- und Schnarchsymptomatik zeigten sich postoperativ deutlich gebessert. Bei keinem der Kinder ist im Verlauf ein Peritonsillarabszess aufgetreten. In Zusammenschau der aktuellen Literatur und unserer Ergebnisse stellt die CO2-Laser-Tonsillotomie bei blander Tonsillenhyperplasie im Kindesalter ein Operationsverfahren dar, welches heute als wissenschaftlich abgesicherte Methode gelten darf und zudem durch eine geringe Nachblutungsrate, geringe postoperative Schmerzen und einen kurzen stationaren Aufenthalt uberzeugt.

Abstract: HLA antigens A, B, C, DR and BF were determined in 14 sibling pairs with type I diabetes and in 61 patients without familial risks. Significantly positive associations of the disease with HLA DR3 and DR4 and a negative association with DR2 were found. Positive and negative associations with the various HLA A, B and C antigens (A1, A2, B8, B15, B18, Cw3) are of a secondary nature due to strong genetic coupling with primarily associated DR alleles. Localisation of diabetes-associated genes in the HLA DR region could be demonstrated in two families with HLA recombinations. In both cases the hypothetic disease gene segregated with the HLA DR segment. Joint evaluation of these data in an international series involving 1200 type I diabetics showed furthermore that around 90% of all patients are DR3 and/or DR4 positive, that the highest morbidity risk exists in DR3/4 heterozygosity and that DR4 positive persons usually fall ill before their 20th year of life and frequently in the last 3 months of the year. Allotment of clinical, epidemiological, virological and immunological criteria of type I diabetes to only one of the both risk factors indicates heterogeneous immunopathogenesis of the disease. HLA DR3 predisposes particularly to endocrine autoimmune disease and DR4 to increased virus susceptibility.

Abstract: The giant deer Megaloceros giganteus is among the most fascinating Late Pleistocene Eurasian megafauna that became extinct at the end of the last ice age. Important questions persist regarding its phylogenetic relationship to contemporary taxa and the reasons for its extinction. We analyzed two large ancient cervid bone fragments recovered from cave sites in the Swabian Jura (Baden-Württemberg, Germany) dated to 12,000 years ago. Using hybridization capture in combination with next generation sequencing, we were able to reconstruct nearly complete mitochondrial genomes from both specimens. Both mtDNAs cluster phylogenetically with fallow deer and show high similarity to previously studied partial Megaloceros giganteus DNA from Kamyshlov in western Siberia and Killavullen in Ireland. The unexpected presence of Megaloceros giganteus in Southern Germany after the Ice Age suggests a later survival in Central Europe than previously proposed. The complete mtDNAs provide strong phylogenetic support for a Dama-Megaloceros clade. Furthermore, isotope analyses support an increasing competition between giant deer, red deer and reindeer after the Last Glacial Maximum, which might have contributed to the extinction of Megaloceros in Central Europe.

Abstract: Autogenous cartilage-perichondrium-composite-grafts have become essential and well established transplant materials in reconstructive middle ear surgery. They have proven to be particularly appropriate for surgical situations which benefit from the bradytrophy and stiffness of the cartilage (adhesive otitis, retraction pockets, subtotal tympanic membrane defects, revision tympanoplasty). Of the numerous techniques available, the perichondrium-island technique and the palisade-cartilage technique are described in detail in this review, also regarding modifications and comments in the literature. Both methods show good functional and morphological results and should be chosen according to individual surgical requirements. The data of experimental investigations are involved in the decision which technique should be favored.

Abstract: Objectives: This is the first clinical trial to evaluate the suitability of a new titanium stapes prosthesis, which we developed jointly with the Kurz Company (Duslingen). Design: In a prospective clinical study, patients with otosclerosis underwent stapes surgery using our new titanium stapes prosthesis during a period of 14 months. One year after surgery pre- and postoperative audiograms were performed and all patients participated in a structured interview. Setting: Tertiary otorhinolaryngological university department Participants: Of 49 patients with otosclerosis, entering the study, two patients were excluded, because they were not located any more. Main outcome measures and results: All patients experienced a hearing improvement of 21 dB on average except one patient. Sixty percentage of patients achieved a reduction of the air–bone gap to less than 10 dB and 31% of patients having their air–bone gap closed to within 20 dB – averaged across 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4 kHz. The hearing level improved significantly in the air and in the bone conduction thresholds. Conclusions: This paper presents our first ‘1 year postimplantation’ results of our titanium stapes prosthesis. We consider the development of this implant to be beneficial. The results confirm significant improvement in hearing status and tinnitus levels.

Abstract: Background: Recently, in patients with normal tension glaucoma (NTG) elevated levels of antiphosphatidylserine antibodies (APSA), a subgroup of antiphospholipid antibodies (APLA) were found. Progressive sensorineural hearing loss (PSHL) is associated with autoimmune diseases and also the presence of APLA. Methods: To investigate a possible association between NTG and PSHL, 34 patients (age range 31–81 years) with NTG were evaluated for evidence of audiovestibular disorders. Besides ophthalmological standard examinations (slit lamp, IOP, funduscopy, perimetry) scanning laser tomography and polarimetry were performed. From all patients’ audiograms, stapedial thresholds and otoacoustic emissions were obtained. The serological testing of patients and controls (40 healthy blood donors older than 50 years) concerned IgG and IgM levels of antibodies against phosphatidylserine (APSA) and β2 glycoprotein. Results: 23 of 34 NTG patients had hearing loss (PSHL n = 11; presbyacusis n = 12). The NTG patients had significantly higher APSA levels than controls. Elevated APSA concentrations were significantly more frequent in patients with NTG and hearing loss compared with NTG patients with normacusis. Conclusions: These findings show that NTG and hearing loss have a high coincidence. The elevated APSA levels may indicate an association with similar systemic autoimmune processes.

Abstract: Leider war es nicht möglich, den zweiten Band unmittelbar im Anschluß an den ersten herauszubringen. Dies hat zwar den Vorteil, daß eine Reihe neuer Erkenntnisse aufgenommen werden konnte; andererseits hat sich aber wiederum deutlich gezeigt, daß in der so kurzen Zeit von zwei Jahren manches Problem aktuell wird, das im ersten Band nur angedeutet oder kurz behandelt werden konnte, das aber die Arbeit der nächsten Zukunft voraussichtlich bestimmen wird. Um nur einiges herauszugreifen: Für die Genese des juvenilen Diabetes wird die Infektion mit dem Coxsackie Virus nicht mehr in Betracht gezogen. Dagegen hat sich unbezweifelbar zeigen lassen, daß die Erzeugung eines Diabetes im Tierversuch durch Virusinfektion an immunopathologische Vorgänge und genetische Faktoren geknüpft ist. Die Genese des menschlichen, akut entstehenden Insulinmangel-Diabetes auf immu nologischer plus hereditärer Basis wird weiterhin in der Diskussion bleiben. Pathogenetische Erkenntnisse sind zu erhoffen. In Zusammenhang damit steht die genetische Verbindung der Insulin-Antikörperproduktion bei insulinbedürf tigen Diabetikern mit Histokompatibilitäts-(HL-A)-Antigenen, die das Diabetes risiko erhöhen, andererseits aber Schutzfunktionen für die Diabetesentstehung signalisieren können. Ein weiteres Problem, dem sich die wissenschaftliche Arbeit in naher Zukunft mit Sicherheit widmen wird, ist die Frage nach der Bedeutung des Somatostatin und der D-Zelle im Inselsystem, in der dieses produziert wird. Hier wird sich die Frage der Sicherung der von OReI und UNGER entwickelten Hypothese der Insel als eines multihormonellen Mikroorganismus stellen, in dem nebeneinander Insulin, Glukagon und Somatostatin gebildet werden und gegenseitige regulato rische Funktionen ausüben.

Abstract: This review gives a survey of biomaterials used for ossicular chain reconstruction. The survey is focussed on application, biophysical requirements, properties and goals for future developments. The implantation site middle ear differs from others due to aeration and potential bacterial colonization. As a consequence, implant materials must exhibit excellent biocompatibility, biostabilty and sound conducting properties. In vitro and in vivo biocompatibility investigations and clinical observations determine the choice of material. Additionally the implants must provide the possibilty of intraoperative shaping or should be available in different variations in order to allow reconstruction appropriate to the individual conditions. Ceramics, metals and plastics are materials in current use. Based on thorough experimental and long term clinical experiences, the bioinert aluminum oxide is favorable amoung the ceramics. Bioactive ceramics may have minor biostability and the risk of fixation to surrounding bone which impairs sound conduction. This is also true for hydroxyapatite although biodegradation occurs only rarely. Today, titanium is the metal best established in middle ear implantation, reflected by excellent biocompatibility in vitro and in vivo, and good clinical results. Titanium is preferred by many surgeons, considering that sound transmission properties are mainly dependent on the implant weight. In stapes surgery, when the implant has direct contact to inner fluids, gold was accused to cause granuloma formation with subsequent inner ear damage in selected cases. In frequent past and present use, plastics (porous polyethylene and teflon) have proven to be of limited value in ossicular chain replacement because of high extrusion rates and the observation of material desintegration and bacterial colonization. In order to individually manage the pathological conditions in the middle ear, the implant design is of crucial importance. It is dependent on the ossicle to be replaced and the implant material. Future investigations have to minimize implant extrusions possibly by modifying and improving implant surfaces.

Two different spectral setups are available for each galaxy, (i) a lowresolution V500 setup covering the wavelength range 3745–7500 Å with a spectral resolution of 6.0 Å (FWHM); and (ii) a medium-resolution V1200 setup covering the wavelength range 3650–4840 Å with a spectral resolution of 2.3 Å (FWHM). The sample covers a redshift range between 0.005 and 0.03, with a wide range of properties in the color–magnitude diagram, stellar mass, ionization conditions, and morphological types. All the cubes in the data release were reduced with the latest pipeline, which includes improved spectrophotometric calibration, spatial registration, and spatial resolution. The spectrophotometric calibration is better than 6% and the median spatial resolution is 200 : 4. Abstract: Hintergrund. Im Ergebnis waren Bemuhungen zur Fixation von Implantaten auf der Steigbugelfusplatte bislang unzufriedenstellend. Methodik. Bei 6 Meerschweinchen wurde der Steigbugeloberbau abgetragen und eine Biovitrokeramik (Bioverit®) auf die Fusplatte gestellt. Zur Vermeidung von Verknocherungen mit der Mittelohrwandung wurde eine Silikonfolie zwischen Implantat und rundem Fenster eingelegt.Zur Kontrolle wurde bei 3 Tieren nach Entfernung des Oberbaus ein autologes Ossikel replantiert.Bei 6weiteren Tieren wurde eine Scheinoperation (nur Abtragung des Steigbugeloberbaus) durchgefuhrt. Ergebnisse. Statt der erhofften Verknocherung des Bioverit®-Implantats ausschlieslich mit der Fusplatte bildete sich nach durchschnittlich 21 Wochen neuer Knochen am Steigbugel, an der Mittelohrwandung, am Implantat und um die Silikonfolie.Bei den Kontrolltieren kam es zur knochernen Fixation der Ossikel an Fusplatte und Mittelohrwand und zur spontanen bogenformigen Reparation des Oberbaus. Schlussfolgerung. Das Meerschweinchen war als Modell fur die Rekonstruktion der Ossikelkette wegen seiner starken Knochenneubildungsfahigkeit nur eingeschrankt geeignet. Allerdings war eine knocherne Verbindung zwischen Biovitrokeramik und Steigbugelfusplatte moglich.

Abstract: We use Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys images and a photometric catalog of the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field to analyze morphologies of the host galaxies of ~400 active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidates at redshifts 0.3 < z < 1.0. We compare the AGN hosts with a sample of nonactive galaxies drawn from the COSMOS field to match the magnitude and redshift distribution of the AGN hosts. We perform two-dimensional surface brightness modeling with GALFIT to yield host galaxy and nuclear point source magnitudes. X-ray-selected AGN host galaxy morphologies span a substantial range that peaks between those of early-type, bulge-dominated and late-type, disk-dominated systems. We also measure the asymmetry and concentration of the host galaxies. Unaccounted for, the nuclear point source can significantly bias results of these measured structural parameters, so we subtract the best-fit point source component to obtain images of the underlying host galaxies. Our concentration measurements reinforce the findings of our two-dimensional morphology fits, placing X-ray AGN hosts between early- and late-type inactive galaxies. AGN host asymmetry distributions are consistent with those of control galaxies. Combined with a lack of excess companion galaxies around AGN, the asymmetry distributions indicate that strong interactions are no more prevalent among AGN than normal galaxies. In light of recent work, these results suggest that the host galaxies of AGN at these X-ray luminosities may be in a transition from disk-dominated to bulge-dominated, but that this transition is not typically triggered by major mergers. Abstract: BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE This study compares the results of the outpatient-based program of the Cochlear Implant Center Ruhr with inpatient-based rehabilitation, which is almost exclusively performed in Germany. PATIENTS/METHODS The Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Essen in Germany provided 52 patients with either 22- or 24-channel Nucleus cochlear implants from March 1996 to July 1999. Almost all patients (n = 49) were rehabilitated on an outpatient basis, which is the standard in many cochlear implant centers outside Germany. RESULTS The longest follow-up period at the University of Essen Department of Otorhinolaryngology was 36 months. Minor complications occurred in 10% of the patients. After 24 months, the first three implanted patients were able to discriminate 100% of numbers and over 60% of syllables in the Freiburg speech discrimination test. The patients who developed an understanding of open speech were able to discriminate 31 words per minute with cochlear implant and without lipreading after 24 months. Children were seen to double their Schmid-Giovannini scores at 6 months postimplantation. CONCLUSIONS The Essen outpatient-based cochlear implant program demonstrates results in speech development and speech understanding equal to those of centers providing inpatient rehabilitation. A special advantage is continuous rehabilitation with professionals known to the child for several years. In children especially, exhaustive commuting reduces school attendance and is a burden on the accompanying guardians. As an inpatient, however, the child is torn from his familiar environment. Parents with several children have particular difficulties in accompanying their child and indeed this may not always be possible.

Abstract: Total reconstruction of the auricle requires a skilful surgical technique and an appropriate material for the shape-supporting frame. Up to now, there is no such material apart from autologous rib cartilage. The combination of chronic microtraumatisation of adjacent tissue caused by the mobility of an implant bed such as the auricle and the foreign-body reaction to currently available artificial polymers frequently results in extrusion. In our animal model (rats), polymers of different elasticity were implanted in a moving implant bed to analyse differences in foreign-body reaction related to implant elasticity. The results were significantly better for a rather stiff control material (porous polyethylene). A contributing factor may be better fixation of the implant material by tissue ingrowth into its micropores.

Abstract: We present imaging data and photometry for the COSMOS survey in 15 photometric bands between 0.3um and 2.4um. These include data taken on the Subaru 8.3m telescope, the KPNO and CTIO 4m telescopes, and the CFHT 3.6m telescope. Special techniques are used to ensure that the relative photometric calibration is better than 1% across the field of view. The absolute photometric accuracy from standard star measurements is found to be 6%. The absolute calibration is corrected using galaxy spectra, providing colors accurate to 2% or better. Stellar and galaxy colors and counts agree well with the expected values. Abstract: BACKGROUND The treatment of severe forms of bilateral Meniere's disease remains an especially challenging task. Similar problems also occur in debilitating Meniere's disease in the only hearing ear. The intramuscular titration therapy with streptomycin has been the means of choice since 1984 to minimize the risk of total hearing loss in cases of severe bilateral disease. METHOD Since 1989 we have treated six out of 21 cases of bilateral Meniere's disease by intravenous application of 2 x 120 mg gentamicin in Ringer's solution for several days. Additionally we reported on two cases in 1988. Only minor amounts of gentamicin were applied to sedate the function of both vestibular organs while avoiding damage to the cochlea. RESULTS In two cases hearing approved approximately about 10 dB, in two cases hearing remained stable, and in two cases hearing worsened about 10 dB. Five of six patients showed minor excitability in caloric tests on both sides, they did not complain of vertigo attacks one to five years after therapy. CONCLUSION Given that only very small amounts of gentamicin are applied to sedate the function of the vestibular organ while causing almost no damage to the cochlea, this method seems to be an excellent means for treatment of bilateral Meniere's disease. Patients do not experience severe problems with equilibrium afterwards, and the treatment can be repeated as often as necessary.

Abstract: Background As causal therapy of Rendu-Osler-Weber syndrome is not yet possible, there are many different therapeutical approaches. It seemed expedient to investigate the efficacy of super-selective angiography in treating Rendu-Osler-Weber syndrome after this technique proved effective in other therapeutic settings. This method is known to be efficient in controlling tumor bleeding. Patients Between March 1993 and September 1995, eight patients with an average age of 57 years were treated by super-selective intraarterial embolization. Results In all cases epistaxis occurred on both sides. Unilateral embolization was performed in ten cases and bilateral embolization in five cases. In two of three patients with nasal packing the embolization permitted removal of the packing. Nevertheless nosebleeds reoccurred on an average of 3.5 days after therapy. Two of eight patients showed long-term improvement after therapy. They suffered fewer nosebleeds than before. Complications included one patient who suffered from partial hemiparesis after embolization, which lasted 1.5 hours and was completely reversible. Another patient died because of pulmonic bleeding caused by manifestation of the disease in this organ. Often patients complained of facial pain or headache which occasionally lasted for a few weeks. Conclusions Endovasal embolization obviously is an alternative to artery ligation in emergency cases whereas the long-term success is currently impaired by formation of new anastomoses. Further development of this technique is necessary.

Abstract: The use of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) in community hospitals has been limited by a lack of neurologic support. The authors developed a telephone network to support community emergency departments (EDs) in the use of tPA. Their experience demonstrates equivalent results for patients treated by telephone and those treated in-house. Their number of tPA-treated patients increased 72%. Requirements included willingness of community EDs to use tPA and willingness of the stroke center to provide support.

Abstract: Within one year (1993) we found a positive family history in five out of forty-eight new patients with Meniere's disease, corresponding to a frequency of 10.4%. We found between two and seven cases in each of five families. The disease followed a dominant autosomal hereditary pattern over two to four generations. Audiometric and vestibulometric examination confirmed the diagnosis. Clinical emphasis was placed on trigger factors such as infections, physical and psychological stress, the autonomic system, and metabolic and endocrinological disorders. There was no evidence of a significantly high incidence of any single trigger factor. The most important result of this study, which also included human leucocyte antigen (HLA) typing, is the fact that HLA A2 was represented in 90% of patients with positive family history of Meniere's disease and in 75% of patients with solitary Meniere's disease in contrast to only 28.9% in the average European population. The frequency of HLA B44 was 70% in family-linked Meniere's disease and 37.5% in single Meniere's disease. The frequency in the average European population is 12.3%. What is even more striking is the combination HLA A2 B44, occurring with respective frequencies of 60%, 37%, and 5%. These results suggest a multi-factor etiology of Meniere's disease combined with a genetic predisposition, which might be caused by mutations on the short arm of chromosome 6.

Abstract: Aseptic necrosis and cholesteatoma of the external auditory canal can be stages of the same pathological entity. The majority of these patients suffered from symptoms similar to those of external otitis. It is suggested that minor mechanical trauma, e.g. cotton lip swabs, plays a role in the pathogenesis of external ear canal cholesteatoma. During the last 10 years we have been surgically treating 22 patients with diagnosis of aseptic necrosis and cholesteatoma of the bony external auditory canal. All 22 patients registered significant postoperative improvement.
