Particle dark matter could belong to a multiplet that includes an electrically charged state. WIMP dark matter (χ0) accompanied by a negatively charged excited state (χ−) with a small mass difference (e.g. < 20 MeV) can form a bound-state with a nucleus such as xenon. This bound-state formation is rare and the released energy is O(1−10) MeV depending on the nucleus, making large liquid scintillator detectors suitable for detection. We searched for bound-state formation events with xenon in two experimental phases of the KamLAND-Zen experiment, a xenon-doped liquid scintillator detector. No statistically significant events were observed. For a benchmark parameter set of WIMP mass mχ0=1 TeV and mass difference Δm=17 MeV, we set the most stringent upper limits on the recombination cross section times velocity 〈σv〉 and the decay-width of χ− to 9.2×10−30 cm3/s and 8.7×10−14 GeV, respectively at 90% confidence level.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of triglycerides containing medium-chain fatty acids (MCT) and tributyrin (TB) supplementation in a milk replacer (MR) on growth performance, plasma metabolites, and hormone concentrations in dairy calves. Sixty-three Holstein heifer calves (body weight at 8 d of age, 41.1 ± 2.91 kg; mean ± SD) were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 experimental MR (28% crude protein and 18% fat): (1) containing 3.2% C8:0 and 2.8% C10:0 (in fat basis) without TB supplementation (CONT; n = 15), (2) containing 6.7% C8:0 and 6.4% C10:0 without TB supplementation (MCT; n = 16), (3) containing 3.2% C8:0 and 2.8% C10:0 with 0.6% (dry matter basis) TB supplementation (CONT+TB; n = 16), (4) containing 6.7% C8:0 and 6.4% C10:0 with 0.6% TB supplementation (MCT+TB; n = 16). The MR were offered at 600 g/d (powder basis) from 8 to 14 d, up to 1,300 g/d from 15 to 21 d, 1,400 g/d from 22 to 49 d, down to 700 g/d from 50 to 56 d, 600 g/d from 57 to 63 d, and weaned at 64 d of age. All calves were fed calf starter, chopped hay, and water ad libitum. The data were analyzed using a 2-way ANOVA via the fit model procedure of JMP Pro 16 (SAS Institute Inc.). Medium-chain fatty acid supplementation did not affect the total dry matter intake. However, calves that were fed MCT had greater feed efficiency (gain/feed) before weaning (0.74 ± 0.098 vs. 0.71 ± 0.010 kg/kg) compared with non-MCT calves. The MCT calves also had a lower incidence of diarrhea compared with non-MCT calves during 23 to 49 d of age and the weaning period (50 to 63 d of age; 9.2% vs. 18.5% and 10.5% vs. 17.2%, respectively). Calves fed with TB had a greater total dry matter intake during postweaning (3,465 vs. 3,232 g/d). Calves fed TB also had greater body weight during the weaning (90.7 ± 0.97 vs. 87.9 ± 1.01 kg) and postweaning period (116.5 ± 1.47 vs. 112.1 ± 1.50 kg) compared with that of non-TB calves. The plasma metabolites and hormone concentrations were not affected by MCT or TB. These results suggest that MCT and TB supplementation in the MR may improve the growth performance and gut health of dairy calves.

To examine the relationship of fear of fear and broad dimensions of psychopathology in panic disorder with agoraphobia over the course of cognitive behavioural therapy in Japan.A total of 177 Japanese patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia were treated with group cognitive behavioural therapy between 2001 and 2015. We examined associations between the change scores in Agoraphobic Cognitions Questionnaire or Body Sensations Questionnaire and the changes in subscales of Symptom Checklist-90 Revised during cognitive behavioural therapy controlling the change in panic disorder severity using multiple regression analysis.Reduction in Agoraphobic Cognitions Questionnaire score was related to a decrease in all Symptom Checklist-90 Revised (SCL-90-R) subscale scores. Reduction in Body Sensations Questionnaire score was associated with a decrease in anxiety. Reduction in Panic Disorder Severity Scale score was not related to any SCL-90-R subscale changes.Changes in fear of fear, especially maladaptive cognitions, may predict broad dimensions of psychopathology reductions in patients of panic disorder with agoraphobia over the course of cognitive behavioural therapy. For the sake of improving a broader range of psychiatric symptoms in patients of panic disorder with agoraphobia, more attention to maladaptive cognition changes during cognitive behavioural therapy is warranted.

Seagrass meadows provide valuable socio-ecological ecosystem services, including a key role in climate change mitigation and adaption. Understanding the natural history of seagrass meadows across environmental gradients is crucial to deciphering the role of seagrasses in the global ocean. In this data collation, spatial and temporal patterns in seagrass meadow structure, biomass and production data are presented as a function of biotic and abiotic habitat characteristics. The biological traits compiled include measures of meadow structure (e.g. percent cover and shoot density), biomass (e.g. above-ground biomass) and production (e.g. shoot production). Categorical factors include bioregion, geotype (coastal or estuarine), genera and year of sampling. This dataset contains data extracted from peer-reviewed publications published between 1975 and 2020 based on a Web of Science search and includes 11 data variables across 12 seagrass genera. The dataset excludes data from mesocosm and field experiments, contains 14 271 data points extracted from 390 publications and is publicly available on the PANGAEA® data repository (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.929968; Strydom et al., 2021). The top five most studied genera are Zostera, Thalassia, Cymodocea, Halodule and Halophila (84 % of data), and the least studied genera are Phyllospadix, Amphibolis and Thalassodendron (2.3 % of data). The data hotspot bioregion is the Tropical Indo-Pacific (25 % of data) followed by the Tropical Atlantic (21 %), whereas data for the other four bioregions are evenly spread (ranging between 13 and 15 % of total data within each bioregion). From the data compiled, 57 % related to seagrass biomass and 33 % to seagrass structure, while the least number of data were related to seagrass production (11 % of data). This data collation can inform several research fields beyond seagrass ecology, such as the development of nature-based solutions for climate change mitigation, which include readership interested in blue carbon, engineering, fisheries, global change, conservation and policy.

We present a new measurement of the Λ4H hypernuclear lifetime using in-flight K− + 4He → Λ4H + π0 reaction at the J-PARC hadron facility. We demonstrate, for the first time, the effective selection of the hypernuclear bound state using only the γ-ray energy decayed from π0. This opens the possibility for a systematic study of isospin partner hypernuclei through comparison with data from (K−, π−) reaction. As the first application of this method, our result for the Λ4H lifetime, τ(HΛ4)=206±8(stat.)±12(syst.)ps, is one of the most precise measurements to date. We are also preparing to measure the lifetime of the hypertriton (Λ3H) using the same setup in the near future.

NAND flash memory is widely used in digital cameras, USB devices, cell phones, camcorders and solid-state drives. Continuous lowering of bit cost, increasing flash-memory-die densities and improving performance have helped to expand flash markets. Recently, there are two different directions to meet market demands. One is lowering bit cost and increase memory density to the utmost limit, which is achieved by 4b/cell [1] or 3b/cell [2]. The other is focusing on high performance and high reliability. To meet both demands, we develop a 19nm 112.8mm2 64Gb 2b/cell NAND flash memory with the smallest die size ever reported. 15MB/s programming throughput and 400Mb/s/pin 1.8V Toggle Mode interface [3] are achieved for the first time. Die Micrograph and features are shown in Figure 25.1.1.

Preceding a core-collapse supernova (CCSN), various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande (SK) via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova (pre-SN) neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming CCSN can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and SK, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-SN neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and SK on pre-SN neutrino detection. A pre-SN alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the SK detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-SN neutrino signal from a 15 M _⊙ star within 510 pc of the Earth at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. For a Betelgeuse-like model with optimistic parameters, it can provide early warnings up to 12 hr in advance.

We measured a set of π±Σ∓, π0Σ0, and π−Σ0 invariant mass spectra below and above the K¯N mass threshold in K−-induced reactions on deuteron. The measured πΣ mass spectral shape is well reproduced via the two-step mechanism, i.e., a neutron knocked out at a forward angle from a deuteron by an incident K−, with the K¯ recoiled backward reacting with the residual nucleon to produce π and Σ. We deduced the S-wave K¯N→πΣ and K¯N→K¯N scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a K¯N and πΣ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to Λ(1405) is located at 1417.7−7.4+6.0 (fitting errors)−1.0+1.1 (systematic errors) + [−26.1−7.9+6.0 (fitting errors)−2.0+1.7 (systematic errors)] i MeV/c2, closer to the K¯N mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group.

Abstract The low-noise amplification of weak microwave signals is crucial for countless protocols in quantum information processing. Quantum mechanics sets an ultimate lower limit of half a photon to the added input noise for phase-preserving amplification of narrowband signals, also known as the standard quantum limit (SQL). This limit, which is equivalent to a maximum quantum efficiency of 0.5, can be overcome by employing nondegenerate parametric amplification of broadband signals. We show that, in principle, a maximum quantum efficiency of unity can be reached. Experimentally, we find a quantum efficiency of 0.69 ± 0.02, well beyond the SQL, by employing a flux-driven Josephson parametric amplifier and broadband thermal signals. We expect that our results allow for fundamental improvements in the detection of ultraweak microwave signals.

We present the measured resistivity, Hall coefficient, and magnetization for three kinds of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+∂ ceramics subjected to various heat treatments. The Hall effect shows that in this system the carriers have hole-like characteristics. The hole density varies according to the heat treatment; the hole density increases and T c decreases as a result of oxidation. In spite of the atmosphere in which heat treatments were performed, the flux pinning density is increased by quenching. The Hall mobility is independent of the heat treatment of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+∂ . This result indicates that oxygen atoms enter and leave sites on planes other than the CuO 2 planes in Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+∂ .

The Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 system is viewed as an archetypal of superconductors modelled as Josephson coupled CuO2 bilayers. The isothermal and temperature dependent DC and AC magnetization measurements forH‖c in a single crystal of Bi2212 have been performed. Qualitative changes are observed to occur over a narrow range of temperature values before reaching the superconducting-normal transition. The observed behaviour can be ascribed to the rapid variation in the strength of the coupling between the superconducting CuO2 planes (i.e., bilayers in the case of Bi2212). Strongly coupled planes behave like a 3D superconductor, whereas weakly coupled planes have a two component response attributable to 2D planes and interplanar couplings. We believe that this paper is a plethora of new findings. Our observations imply that resistivity across the planes becomes zero earlier than that within the planes. A new line (designated asH2D(T)) above which the change in the electromagnetic response is dominated by quasi 2D-planes has been determined for the first time. This paper also contains the first observation of Differential Diamagnetic Effect (DDE) in the In-phase AC susceptibility data which signals the onset (atT2D(H)) of dominance of response from 2D-planes. In addition to a host of interesting thermomagnetic history effects which are a consequence of interplay between the diamagnetic responses from the two components, a comparison of irreversibility lines (of the 3D state) determined by different methods on the same specimen of a HTSC is also being presented for the first time. We have come across Paramagnetic Meissner Effect (PME), first recognized in ceramic samples of Bi2212, in the temperature region of dimensional crossover in our single crystal sample, whichinter-alia confirms our labelling of the two component behaviour. A schematic phase diagram summarizing the various transformations that can occur nearTc in the electromagnetic response of an anisotropic layered system has been drawn.

New magnetization results (for H ∥ c ) on a single crystal of Bi2212 elucidating the transition from a one-component to a two- component response across the 3D-to-2D transformation are reported. The two-component response is identified to emanate from the 2D planes and interplanar links. The magnetization response above the transformation temperature T s and very close to T c is found to be irreversible in contrast to the reversible behavior so far believed in. A new phase diagram for the mixed state of layered superconductors near T c is proposed.

We present the measured resistivity, Hall coefficient, and magnetization in three kinds of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ ceramics subjected to various heat treatments. The Hall effect shows that the carriers have the hole characteristic in this system. The hole number varies according to the heat treament. It increases and Tc decreases as a result of oxidation. In spite of the atmosphere of the heat treatment, the density of the flux pinning is increased by quenching. The Hall mobility is independent of the heat treatments for Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ This result indicates that oxygens enter and leave sites on a plain other than the CuO2 plain in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ.

Since the tumor thrombus in the main portal vein appears in the terminal stage of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), any attempt to remove it surgically is thought to be impractical as the malignancy itself cannot be entirely removed. During the past 5 years, we have performed tumor thrombectomy combined with hepatectomy in 29 of 298 patients with HCC. This combined therapy was initially decided upon as an emergency measure to prevent impending rupture of esophageal varices, rather than to improve patient survival. Since portal flow was obtained after removal of thrombi, this condition enabled transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) and/or percutaneous ethanol injection therapy (PEIT). Although improved patient survival was not the primary goal of the emergency operation and there was an operative mortality of 11%, half of the other patients in the present series had unexpectedly high survival rates of 1 year (52.2%), 2 years (23.2%), and 3 years (11.6%), which were significantly higher than in patients not undergoing operation (n = 22).

Between January 1985 and July 1990, 323 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma underwent liver resection in our department. Bone metastases were found in 12 of these cases (3.7%). Bone metastases were mainly found in vertebral bone (58.3%) and pelvic bone (41.7%). The time interval to the development of bone metastasis after liver resection was closely related to the presence of intrahepatic metastasis and the stage at operation. In all cases, the initial clinical symptom was pain and/or motor disturbance. Radiotherapy was performed in 10 cases and transcatheter arterial embolization or surgery was performed in 4 cases. The pain or neurological symptoms improved with these therapies in all cases. Cumulative survival was 1 year in 74%, 2 years in 34%, and 3 years in 17%, respectively. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

NAND flash memory use in digital still cameras and cellular phones is driving demand for larger-capacity storage. Moreover, NAND flash has the potential to replace HDDs. To achieve larger capacity while maintaining low cost per bit, technical improvements in feature size and area reduction are essential. To meet the stringent requirements, we develop a 16 Gb 4-level NAND flash memory in 43 nm CMOS technology. In 43 nm generation, gate-induced drain leakage (GIDL) influences the electrical field on both sides of NAND strings. GIDL causes severe program disturb problems to NAND flash memories. To avoid GIDL, two dummy wordlines (WL) on both sides of NAND strings are added. This is effective because the dummy gate voltages, are selected independent of the program inhibit voltage.

A new inductive writer design for MR head with a trimmed and planarized top shield and an over-sized trailing pole is presented. The normal P2 pole is located right above the trimmed top shield. Modeling has been conducted on the write field fringing for this new design. It shows that the field distribution pattern is just a reverse image of the traditional MR write head. With this new design, the straight fringe pattern is located at the trailing side and a better written track is expected due to the elimination of the curved write field fringing in a traditional head. The actual samples were fabricated and their performance was evaluated by MFM image. The result shows the written track is straight with nearly zero erase band. The track width is independent of the bit density as expected.

The present studies sought to investigate the effect of milnacipran called the serotonin (5-HT) and noradrenaline (NA) reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) on the interaction of central locus coeruleus noradrenergic and dorsal raphe nucleus serotonergic functional activity by utilizing in vivo microdialysis. A single administration of milnacipran (60 mg/kg, s.c.) markedly decreased the levels of NA and its metabolite, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxymandelic acid (HMMA), in the locus coeruleus and the levels of, a metabolite of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5-HIAA) in the dorsal raphe nucleus. Combined administration of yohimbine (2 mg/kg, s.c.),?α 2 -adrenoceptor?antagonist, at 2 h after milnacipran (60 mg/kg, s.c.) led to a significant increase in NA levels in the locus coeruleus, although yohimbine alone had no effect on these levels. Under similar experimental condition, 5-HIAA levels in the dorsal raphe nucleus remained unchanged. NAN-190 (1 mg/kg, s.c.), 5-HT 1A receptor partial agonist, alone markedly decreased the levels of 5-HIAA in the dorsal raphe nucleus, although this level was not affected by WAY100635, the selective 5-HT 1A receptor antagonist. WAY100635 recovered the milnacipran-induced decrease of 5-HIAA levels in the dorsal raphe nucleus to control levels. On the other hand, NAN-190 did not affect the milnacipran-induced decrease of 5-HIAA levels. Behavioral signs (locomotion and rearing) were markedly observed following milnacipran alone or combined administration of milnacipran and yohimbine. However, the behavioral signs after coadministration of milnacipran and WAY100635 or NAN-190 were relatively poor. These results may suggest that an increase of NA in the locus coeruleus with the treatment of yohimbine after milnacipran results from negative feedback following the blockade of α 2 -adrenoceptors achieved with yohimbine, and that WAY100635 but not NAN-190 recovered milnacipran-induced decrease of 5-HIAA in the dorsal raphe nucleus to control levels by preventing the activation for the presynaptic 5-HT 1A autoreceptor.

It is proposed that the measurement of thermoelectric properties, specifically the Seebeck coefficient, of metals and alloys is a very useful and promising tool for the study of phase transitions, especially of martensitic transformations. Results of measurement on Ti-Ni family shape memory alloys and metastable austenitic stainless steel SUS301 are presented and compared with other properties such as the electrical resistivity or internal friction, which are influenced by the phase transition and can be used to study the phase transitions. It is concluded that the measurement of thermoelectric properties seems a very useful and cogent tool in the investigation of the behaviors of martensitic transformations. Discussions are made on the behavior of Seebeck coefficient based on the calculated density of states of electrons for various phases of Ti-Ni alloy.

Abstract Background Previous research studies have assessed the relationship between attention to social information and peripheral (e.g., plasma and salivary) oxytocin (OT) levels in typically developing (TD) children and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A relationship between them was observed in TD children, but not in children with ASD. However, this relationship remains unexamined in other age groups. To clarify whether this lack of association is maintained throughout development in individuals with ASD, we aimed to assess the relationship between salivary OT levels and attention to social information in adolescents and adults with and without ASD. Methods We recruited male adolescents and adults with ASD (n = 17) and TD participants (n = 24). Using the all-in-one eye-tracking system Gazefinder, we measured the percentage fixation time allocated to social information. We also measured the salivary OT levels and Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) of participants. Subsequently, we confirmed group differences and conducted a correlation analysis to investigate the relationships between these three measures. Results Salivary OT levels did not show any significant difference between the ASD and TD groups and were negatively correlated with the AQ in the whole-group analysis, but not in within-group analysis. Individuals with ASD had significantly lower percentage fixation times than did TD individuals for eye regions in human faces with/without mouth motion, for upright biological motion, and for people regions in the people and geometry movies. The percentage of fixation for geometric shapes in the people and geometry movies was significantly higher in the ASD than in the TD group. In the TD group, salivary OT levels were positively correlated with percentage fixation times for upright biological motion and people and negatively correlated with inverted biological motion and geometry. However, no significant correlations were found in the ASD group. Conclusions Our exploratory results suggest that salivary OT levels in adolescents and adults with ASD are less indicative of attention to social stimuli than they are in TD adolescents and adults. It is suggested that their association is slightly weaker in adolescents and adults with ASD and that this attenuated relationship appears to be maintained throughout development.

It is well known that the archetype chiral magnet MnSi stabilizes a skyrmion lattice, termed “A-phase,” in a narrow temperature range in the vicinity of the paramagnetic boundary around Tc ∼ 29 K and Hc ∼ 2 kOe. Recently, it has been predicted that at much lower temperatures below Tc, the conical helicoid and the forced ferromagnetic (FFM) states could be separated by a new “unknown state.” In order to detect this “unknown state,” we explored the phase diagram of MnSi oriented single crystals as a function of the d.c. magnetic field (H⃗dc) and the temperature (T) by using a.c. magnetization measurements. For H⃗dc∥ 〈111〉, we observed a new region, termed “B-phase,” in the magnetic phase diagram, characterized by a flat-valley-like anomaly on the in-phase component of the a.c. magnetization (m′), over 3.5 ≤ Hdc ≤ 6.2 kOe just below the low temperature (T < 6 K) FFM boundary. The observed frequency independence over 0.3–1000 Hz and the absence of any measurable absorption in the a.c. magnetization (m″) in the “B-phase” suggest a static nature. The “B-phase” was not observed for either H⃗dc∥ 〈100〉 or 〈110〉, revealing that the magnetic anisotropy could play a role in the stabilization of the phase. The “B-phase” could be compatible with the theoretical predictions if the new magnetic state is supposedly related with a relative reorientation of the four helices in MnSi.

In two separate lymphoma populations, we examined immune reconstitution following high dose chemotherapy (HDT) and bone marrow transplantation (BMT). In the first study we followed immune reconstitution for one year after HDT and BMT. In the second study we examined the ability of the orally active immunomodulator, Bestatin to augment immune reconstitution following HDT and BMT. The studies on immune reconstitution following HDT and BMT were undertaken in a cohort of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) patients (n = 35) and examined the peripheral blood (PB) leukocyte subsets and their in vitro functions. Our results demonstrate that monocyte and natural killer (NK) cell engraftment occurred more rapidly then did T cell reconstitution. We also observed a significant decrease in the CD4:CD8 ratio post-transplantation as compared to normal PB donors due to a decrease in CD4+ cells. In addition, following HDT and BMT, measures of T cell function (phytohemagglutinin [PHA] mitogenesis) and T helper cell activity (pokeweed mitogen [PWM] mitogenesis) were consistently depressed as compared to cells from normal PB. Further, we demonstrate a correlation between the loss of T cell function and the frequency of circulating monocytes, suggesting a cause-effect relationship. Despite the dysfunction in T cells following HDT and BMT, immune-modulating agents can still augment the immune function. One such drug is Bestatin (ubenimex), an inhibitor of aminopeptidase (AP) that binds to CD13 on macrophage/monocytes. To examine its immune modulatory activity after HDT and BMT, a dose finding (10, 30, 90 and 180 mg/day) phase Ib trial was conducted with 30 Hodgkin's disease (HD) and NHL patients who received no drug (control), or Bestatin daily for 60 days following BMT. In these studies, Bestatin administration was initiated when the absolute neutrophil count was greater than 250/mm3 on two consecutive days. These studies revealed that Bestatin significantly increased the PHA and PWM responses in a dose-dependent manner. Flow cytometric analysis revealed a significant increase in NK cells (CD56+), B cells (CD19+), as well as the CD4:CD8 cell ratio. The latter observation was associated largely with a depression in the percent of CD8+ T cells as opposed to an increase in CD4+ T cells. We conclude that despite the peripheral tolerance observed following HDT and BMT, Bestatin could significantly increase some, but not all, immune surrogates.

Human bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) and enriched CD34 positive (CD34+) cells were transduced with adenovirus vectors encoding Escherichia coli beta-galactosidase gene. Tranductions were carried out by 24-hour coincubation with adenovirus vectors at different multiplicities of infections (moi). Efficacy of gene transfer into BM cells and expression of the gene product (ie, beta-galactosidase) were studied using X-Gal histochemical staining and flow cytometric analysis. X-Gal staining demonstrated that the percentage of positive cells at mois of 5 to 500 was 3.4% to 34.5% for BMMNCs and 6.0% to 20.0% for enriched CD34+ cells. Similar results (1.5% to 35.7% for BMMNCs and 5.4% to 24.2% for enriched CD34+ cells) were obtained with flow cytometric analysis using fluorescein di-beta-D-galactopyranoside (FDG). Multicolor flow cytometry analysis, which included FDG, demonstrated that BM progenitors (CD34+ or CD34+CD38-), T cells (CD2+), B cells (CD19+), natural killer cells (CD56+), granulocytes, and monocytes all expressed the adenovirus transgene. To ascertain the effects of adenovirus vectors on normal BM progenitors, the numbers of colony forming unit-granulocyte/macrophage (CFU-GM), burst-forming unit-erythrocyte (BFU-E), and high-proliferative potential-colony-forming cells (HPP-CFC) after 24-hour coincubation with adenovirus vectors were determined. When BMMNCs or enriched CD34+ cells were incubated with adenovirus vectors at mois of 5 and 50, no significant differences in the numbers of CFU-GM, BFU-E, and HPP-CFC were observed compared with the uninfected control cells. However, the numbers of CFU-GM were significantly (P.01) decreased when BMMNCs or enriched CD34+ cells were incubated with adenovirus vectors at a moi of 500, compared with the uninfected control cells. The adenovirus infected cells, purified by cell sorting for FDG expression, were capable of growing in culture and gave rise to various colonies (ie, CFU-GM, BFU-E, and HPP-CFC). These data indicate that recombinant adenovirus vectors can be used to transfer genes to human BM hematopoietic cells with expression of the exogenous gene at a high transduction efficiency.

Aminopeptidase N purified from human placenta actively hydrolyzed various immunomodulating peptides from their N-terminus such as splenopentin, thymopentin, thymic humoral factor gamma 2, tuftsin and rigin in vitro. Aminopeptidase N also actively hydrolyzed neuropeptide hormones (met-enkephalin, somatostatin and neurokinin A) and vasoactive peptides (lysyl-bradykinin and angiotensin III) from their N-terminus. In addition, angiotensin II, secretin, thymopoietin II peptide fragment, motilin, endothelin-I and insulin were tested for hydrolysis by aminopeptidase N. Km and Vmax values for the N-terminal amino acid, Thr, a liberation from tuftsin were 267 microM and 8.33 mumol/min/mg protein, respectively. L-Leucyl-p-nitroanilidase activity in the human placental membrane fraction was almost completely neutralized by anti-aminopeptidase N antibody. Our present study suggests that possible roles for surface enzyme aminopeptidase N in the human placenta would be to down-regulate the action of immunomodulating peptides as well as vasoactive and neuropeptide hormones, and to control both immunology and endocrinology of pregnancy.

A total of 493 male inpatients were subjects in a study of the dietary intake (food frequency) when they were elementary school age and at the time of marriage by a long-term recall method. In order to examine the reliability of the recalled dietary data, 21 food items were compared with results of the National Nutrition Survey for the same time period. Food intake by the long-term recall method, especially meats, egg, milk and rice correlated well with the results of the National Nutrition Survey. From these results it appears that long-term recall of dietary intake frequency data averages are similar to the results of the National Survey data. Therefore the long-term recall method reflects the dietary practices of that era, and keeping in mind its limitations, its use as a means of revealing the dietary practices of a population is suggested.

Ketogenesis was evaluated in 33 critically ill hepatectomized patients in relation to the arterial ketone body ratio (acetoacetate to 3-hydroxybutyrate), which reflects hepatic mitochondrial redox state. In 15 patients whose arterial ketone body ratio decreased to below 0.4, blood ketone body levels were significantly increased concomitant with marked increase of blood lactate and plasma alanine levels. In the 6 survivors of these 15 patients, the arterial ketone body ratio was restored within the next 2 days, and blood ketone body levels were decreased. By contrast, in the nine non-survivors, the arterial ketone body ratio remained below 0.4, and blood ketone body levels were decreased, accompanied by significant increases in blood lactate and plasma alanine levels in the terminal stages. These results suggest that ketogenesis acts as an alternative process for ATP synthesis in the liver in critically ill patients. Death occurs when the liver falls into an energy crisis concomitant with the cessation of ketogenesis.

The influence of vasopressin and epinephrine on hepatic energy metabolism in the state of brain death was assessed by measuring arterial ketone body ratio (AKBR) and hepatic energy charge (EC) in brain-dead dogs. Mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) was significantly decreased from 125.5 +/- 5.5 to 53.4 +/- 1.7 mmHg after complete brain death (P less than 0.01). In the control group AKBR and EC were maintained at near the normal values thereafter, despite marked hypotension. Combined administration of vasopressin and epinephrine sustained AKBR normally and improved MABP above 90 mmHg (P less than 0.01). EC was also maintained within the normal range at 5 hr after initiation of administration of the drugs. By contrast, vasopressin or epinephrine alone maintained AKBR and EC at near the normal values, but improved MABP just slightly to around 60 mmHg (P less than 0.01). As for the volume control, the urinary output was significantly smaller in the vasopressin and epinephrine-treated group than in the control group (P less than 0.05). It is suggested that combined administration of vasopressin and epinephrine has a synergistic effect in improving the hemodynamics and maintenance of the energy status of the liver. This regimen is recommended as a good one for maintaining potential liver donors in the state of brain death.

Even though recent advances in imaging technology has allowed detection of small liver tumors, only 20% of patients with liver tumors benefit from surgical resection. The reason for this low incidence of resectability in our country is mainly due to decreased liver functional reserve caused by coexisting chronic liver diseases such as cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis [1], Therefore, even when the tumor is small, and is located in the center of one lobe, wide resection may not be advisable. In the last five years, we have reformed the operative procedures and postoperative management according to the redox theory, which involves measurement of the arterial ketone body ratio (AKBR), improving in operative mortality and morbidity [2–7]. In this paper, some of the operative procedures will be presented such as liver resection under hepatic vascular exclusion (HVE) using veno-venous bypass, and hepatic resection using a technique for living related liver transplantation which we have performed in 14 cases in the last 10 months.

Postoperative mortality and morbidity are determined by intraoperative stress calculated by changes in arterial ketone body ratio (AKBR) during hepatectomy. In this report, we introduced two types of operative procedure which aims not to decrease AKBR during operation. One is total vascular exclusion (HVE) for liver resection using venovenous bypass which improved the deleterious effects of portal pooling and decreased return of blood to heart. The other is the hepatic resection applying the technique used in the transplantation from the living related donor. In this procedure, the remnant liver works for decreasing the intraoperative stress. The tumor involving lobe is removed under cold perfusion and the tumor is removed on the back table. Then, the tumor free liver is transplanted to the same position.

During the past 5 1/3 years, we have performed 521 hepatic resections, of which 308 cases were hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC). Two hundreds and sixty cases of the 308 HCC patients were studied on their outcomes. These patients included 198 males and 62 females, whose ages ranged from 29 to 84 years. Underlying cirrhosis of the liver was found in 66% of the patients. Hepatectomized patients were classified into 5 groups according to the curability as follows; Group A, the resection of the tumor-bearing segment and additional segment; Group B, the complete resection of the tumor with more than 1.0 cm free surgical margin; Group C, the complete resection of the tumor with less than 1.0 cm free surgical margin; Group D, the incomplete resection of the tumor; Group E, the surgical approach for advanced HCC with tumor thrombi in the main trunk or the 1st branch of the portal vein and/or the inferior vena cava, with multiple daughter nodules in both lobes and with tumor recurrence. The number of patients in Groups A, B, C, D and E was 14 (5.4%), 105 (40.4%), 61 (23.4%), 14 (5.4%) and 66 (25.4%), respectively. There were 5 death (2.6%) among the 194 patients of Group A-D within 30 days after operation and 12 death (18.2%) in Group E. The overall 5-year survival rate of all 249 patients except for 11 surgical death cases was 32%. Whereas, 5-year survival rate for Group A and B were 100% and 47%, 4-year rate for Group C was 44%, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Although the diagnostic methods for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are now being improved, there are still many cases detected at advanced stage. We, based on the Redox theory and using a technique of vascular surgery and liver transplantation, made it possible to perform the extended hepatectomy more actively even in the advanced cases which were previously considered to be in-operable. We report these extended hepatectomies in this paper. From January 1985 to August 1989, we performed 263 hepatectomies for HCC. Out of these 263 cases, we examined 208 cases which had an interval more than three months from the time of the operation and had exact follow-up data at the end of August 1989. There are 57 extended hepatectomies and they consist of 4 groups as follows. 1) Multiple group (14 cases): the operation for the cases with multiple daughter nodules in both lobes besides the main tumor. 2) Thrombus group (30 cases): the operation for the cases with portal tumor thrombus in the first branch or the main trunk of portal vein. 3) IVC group (4 cases): the operation adding resection and reconstruction of IVC because tumor was hardly fixed to the wall of IVC. 4) Recurrence group (9 cases): the operation for hepatic recurrence. Six cases of the Multiple group survived more than one year and one case is still alive more than two years after surgery. The 6-months, 1-year and 2-year cumulative survival rates of the Multiple group are 50.5%, 38.3%, and 8.5% respectively and these results are better than other reports. Forty-three hepatic recurrences were observed in 138 cases whose tumor was completely resected macroscopically.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

In the title compound, [VO(C6H10N2O4)(H2O)], the V atom is situated in a distorted octahedral geometry. The ethylenediamine-N,N'-diacetate (edda) ligand coordinates to the vanadium center in the symmetric α-cis fashion, which differs from the β-cis coordination mode in (NH4)[VO2(edda)] in the solid state. The distance from the vanadium center to the N atom trans to the oxo ligand is significantly elongated as a result of a strong trans influence of the oxo ligand.

A sharp kink in χ - vs-Hdc curve for H//c-axis of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 single crystal was observed near the second peak in the dc-magnetization curve around 35K. An anomaly was also observed near the irreversibility field at higher temperatures where the dc-magnetization curve has no second peak. These anomalies are explained from a change in relaxation of the magnetization which has probably close relation to vortex transitions.
