We report measurements for two-body charmless B decays with an eta' meson in the final state. Using 11.1X10^6 BBbar pairs collected with the Belle detector, we find BF(B^+ ->eta'K^+)=(79^+12_-11 +-9)x10^-6 and BF(B^0 -> eta'K^0)=(55^+19_-16 +-8)x10^-6, where the first and second errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. No signal is observed in the mode B^+ -> eta' pi^+, and we set a 90% confidence level upper limit of BF(B^+-> eta'pi^+) eta'K^+- decays is investigated and a limit at 90% confidence level of -0.20

We have measured the branching fraction of the inclusive radiative B meson decay B --> X(s) gamma to be Br(B->X(s)gamma)=(3.36 +/- 0.53(stat) +/- 0.42(sys) +0.50-0.54(th)) x 10^{-4}. The result is based on a sample of 6.07 x 10^6 BBbar events collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e^+e^- storage ring., Comment: 14 pages, 6 Postsript figures, uses elsart.cls

We report a determination of the ${B}_{d}^{0}\ensuremath{-}{\overline{B}}_{d}^{0}$ mixing parameter $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}$ based on the time evolution of dilepton yields in $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ decays. The measurement is based on a $5.9{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at KEKB. The proper-time difference distributions for same-sign and opposite-sign dilepton events are simultaneously fitted to an expression containing $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}$ as a free parameter. Using both muons and electrons, we obtain $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.463\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.008(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.016(\mathrm{syst}){\mathrm{ps}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. This is the first determination of $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}$ from time evolution measurements at the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$. We also place limits on possible $\mathrm{CPT}$ violations.

We present a measurement of the standard model $\mathrm{CP}$ violation parameter $\mathrm{sin}2{\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{1}$ (also known as $\mathrm{sin}2\ensuremath{\beta}$) based on a $10.5{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ data sample collected at the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collider. One neutral $B$ meson is reconstructed in the $J/\ensuremath{\psi}{K}_{S}$, $\ensuremath{\psi}(2S){K}_{S}$, ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c1}{K}_{S}$, ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{c}{K}_{S}$, $J/\ensuremath{\psi}{K}_{L}$, or $J/\ensuremath{\psi}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ $\mathrm{CP}$-eigenstate decay channel and the flavor of the accompanying $B$ meson is identified from its charged particle decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time interval between the two $B$-meson decay points, we determine $\mathrm{sin}2{\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{1}{\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.58}_{\ensuremath{-}0.34}^{+0.32}(\mathrm{stat}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}0.10}^{+0.09}(\mathrm{syst})$.

A measurement of the strong coupling constant αS is presented using hadronic events produced in e+e− annihilations at s =58.0 GeV from the AMY detector at TRISTAN. The measurement is based on comparisons of the distributions of thrust, heavy jet mass, total jet broadening, wide jet broadening, and energy-energy correlations with QCD calculations resummed up to next-to-leading-logarithms matched with the O(αS2) perturbative calculation. Combining the results of the individual evaluations, we find α S (58 GeV )=0.132±0.006 .

The forward-backward asymmetry in e(+)e(-) --> b (b) over bar at root s = 57.9 GeV and the b-quark branching ratio to muons have been measured using neural networks. Unlike previous methods for measuring the b (b) over bar forward-backward asymmetry where the estimated background from c-quark decays and other sources are subtracted, here events are categorized as either b (b) over bar or non-b (b) over bar events by neural networks based on event-by-event characteristics. The determined asymmetry is -0.429 +/- 0.044(stat) +/- 0.047(sys) and is consistent with the prediction of the standard model. The measured B (B) over bar mixing parameter is 0.136 +/- 0.037(stat) +/- 0.040(sys) +/- 0.002(model) and the measured b-quark branching ratio to muons is 0.122 +/- 0.006(stat) +/- 0.007(sys).

The inclusive cross section for the production of charmed D*(+/-) mesons in two-photon processes is measured with the AMY detector at the TRISTAN e(+)e(-) collider. D*(+/-) mesons ate identified from the distribution of charged-particle transverse momenta relative to the jet axis. A data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 176 pb(-1) at a center-of-mass energy of 58 GeV is used to determine a cross section sigma(e(+)e(-) --> e(+)e(-)D*(+/-)X) = 270 +/- 49(stat) +/- 38(syst) pb. The results are compared with theoretical expectations based on the Vector Meson Dominance, direct quark-parton model, and resolved photon processes.

We have measured the ratio of the average sub-jet multiplicity in 3-jet to 2-jet events, R(23), and 4-jet to 2-jet events, R(24), using the e(+)e(-) annihilation data at root s = 58 GeV obtained from the AMY detector. We compare the measured values of R(23) and R(24) With the predictions of coherent and incoherent Monte Carlo models. R(23) is also compared with the NLLA calculations to all-orders. The color coherence effect has been observed to contribute to the suppression of R(23) and R(24) Also, the difference of the behavior between gluon jets in 3-jet and 4-jet events has been studied.

A study of e + e − annihilations into final states containing a single energetic photon with no accompanying particles is made at a center of mass energy of 57.8 GeV. The measured cross section is consistent with expectations from standard model processes and is used to set limits on the masses of the scalar electron and photino particles predicted by supersymmetry theories. If the photino is assumed to be massless, the 90% confidence level lower limit on the mass of the degenerate scalar electron is 65.5 GeV. If the results of all the single photon experiments are combined, this lower limit increases to 79.3 GeV.

We have measured the azimuthal correlation of hadrons produced in e(+)e(-) annihilations at root s=58 GeV. In perturbative QCD these correlations are sensitive to the interference between soft gluons emitted at large angles with respect to the event axis. However, Monte Carlo calculations incorporating QCD-inspired hadronization models in which the correlation of interjet particles is treated in a phenomenological manner describe the data well. We also observe that angular ordering of the parton showering in the LUND Monte Carlo program improves the agreement with the data.

Measurements of open charm production in photon-photon collisions made with the AMY detector at TRISTAN are reported. Charmed hadrons were identified by detecting the high momentum muons or electrons from their semileptonic decays. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 275 pb −1 at an average center of mass energy of 58 GeV. Results are presented in the form of cross sections of inclusive leptons from charm for both muons and electrons. The measured cross section is 1.8 standard deviations higher than theoretical predictions based on the direct and photon-gluon fusion process, where the mass of charm quark is assumed to be 1.6 GeV.

Using e+e− annihilation events accumulated with the AMY detector at the TRISTAN collider, we have studied the Bose-Einstein correlations in the distributions of like-sign charged tracks. As reference samples we used the opposite-sign charged track pairs and mixed pairs, which are like-sign pairs synthesized from tracks belonging to different events. The results of the different reference samples give approximately 0.45 for the correlation strength and approximately 0.65 fm for the source size. Previous measurements of these parameters in e+e− annihilation at energies from CESR to LEP show remarkably flat dependence on s . Our results conform well with this picture.

With data corresponding to 142 pb−1 accumulated at s = 57.8 GeV by the AMY detector at TRISTAN we measure the cross section of the reactions e+e− → μ+μ− and e+e− → τ+τ− and the symmetry in the angular distributions. For the lowest order cross section we obtain σμμ = 27.54 ± 0.65 ± 0.95 pb and σττ = 28.27 ± 0.87 ± 0.69 pb, and for the forward-backward asymmetry, Aμμ = 0.303 ± 0.027 ± 0.008 and Aττ = −0.291 ± 0.040 ± 0.019. These measurements agree with the standard model. Assuming e−μ−τ univrsality we extract the vector and axial coupling constants | gν| = 0.00 ± 0.09 and |gA| = 0.476 ± 0.024. A fit of data to composite models places lower bounds (95% confidence level) on the compositeness scale of 2–4 TeV.

Using 773 muons found in hadronic events from 142 pb-1 of data at a c.m. energy of 57.8 GeV, we extract the cross section and forward-backward charge asymmetry for the e+e- --> bbBAR process, and the heavy quark fragmentation function parameters for the Peterson model. For the analysis of the e+e- --> bbBAR process, we use a method in which the behavior of the c quark and lighter quarks is assumed, with only that of the b quark left indeterminate. The cross section and asymmetry for e+e- --> bbBAR are found to be R(b) = 0.57 +/- 0.06(stat) +/- 0.08(syst) and A(b) = -0.59 +/- 0.09 +/- 0.09, respectively. They are consistent with the standard model predictions. For the study of the fragmentation function we use the variable [x(e)], the fraction of the beam energy carried by the heavy hadrons. We obtain [x(E)]c = 0.56(-0.05-0.03)+0.04+0.03 and [x(E)]b = 0.65(-0.04-0.06)+0.06+0.05, respectively. These are in good agreement with previously measured values.

We report on a measurement of the forward-backward charge asymmetry in e+e- --> qqBAR at KEK TRISTAN, where. the asymmetry is near maximum. We sum over all flavors and measure the asymmetry by determining the charge of the quark jets. In addition we exploit flavor dependencies in the jet charge determination to enhance the contributions of certain flavors. This provides a check on the asymmetries of individual flavors. The measurement agrees with the standard model expectations.

The construction and performance of polyvinylchloride resistive plate counters are described. These counters provide both time and spatial measurement of charged particles in a relatively inexpensive and easily constructed detector. We describe a new technique for applying voltage to the electrodes. The performance of these counters is evaluated for various concentrations of the quenching agent, freon and isobutane.

We present a study of the third moment of the inclusive momentum distribution of particles within jets produced by e+e- annihilation at TRISTAN. In this analysis, the QCD coupling strength alpha(s) is determined by fits to the prediction of the Next-to-Leading Logarithm Parton-Shower model. The measured value of alpha(s) (57.9 GeV) = 0.134(-0.005)+0.006.

We present results of an experimental study of e+e−+ hadrons in the kinematic regime for which the process is interpreted as hadron production in collisions of almost-real photons. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 27.5 pb− and covers center-of-mass energies from 55 to 61.4 GeV. We observe more events than expected from the incoherent sum of quark-parton and vector-meson-dominance models, and we give a quantitative explanation of the excess by including the hard scattering of the hadronic constituents of the photons calculated with QCD.

Results of a search for the pair production of charged heavy leptons in e+e− annihilations over the center-of-mass energy range of 50 to 60.8 GeV are reported. We assume that the leptons are of the sequential type but have allowed for the case where the associated neutrino might be massive. Separate searches for evidence for decays to hadronic and leptonic final states, searches specialized for the case where the charged lepton and its associated neutrino are close in mass, and a search for stable heavy leptons have uncovered no evidence for the production of such particles at these energies. Mass limits for heavy leptons and their associated neutrinos are determined for a range of hadronic and leptonic decay branching fractions. A sequential charged heavy lepton with mass between 12.6 and 29.6 GeV/c2 and with massless neutrino is excluded at the 95% confidence level.

The photon structure function F2 has been measured at average Q2 values of 73,160 and 390 ( GeV c ) 2 . We compare the x dependence of the Q2 = 73 ( GeV c ) 2 data with theoretical expectations based on QCD. In addition we present results on the Q2 evolution of the structure function for the intermediate x range (0.3⩽ x ⩽0.8). The results are consistent with QCD.

We report results of a study of four-lepton final states produced in e+e− collisions at center-of-mass energies from 50 to 61.4 GeV using the AMY detector at the TRISTAN collider. For the cases where two or three charged tracks are produced at large angles relative to the beam direction, the cross sections agree with QED. However, we observe an excess of e+e−→e+e−μ+μ− events with four tracks at wide angles and with dimuon mass less than 1.0 GeV/c2.

The reaction {sup 58}Ni({pi}{sup +},{ital pp}) was studied with good energy resolution for an incident pion energy of 160 MeV. The angular correlation of the outgoing protons was measured for {theta}{sub lab}=30{degree}, 75{degree}, and 130{degree}. From these angular correlations the contribution from direct two-nucleon absorption was extracted. A Monte Carlo calculation modeling the absorption process in terms of initial-state scattering of the pion before absorption, two-nucleon absorption, and final-state scattering of the outgoing nucleons is compared to the data. We conclude that within this framework the two-nucleon mechanism can account for less than half of the total absorption cross section in {sup 58}Ni. We report results for the low-energy coincidence proton spectra (down to 5 MeV) which suggest that most of these protons come from evaporation. Angular correlation data for the reaction {sup 58}Ni({pi}{sup {minus}},{ital pp}) are also presented.

We present the general properties of multihadron final states produced by {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} annihilation at center-of-mass energies from 52 to 57 GeV in the AMY detector at the KEK collider TRISTAN. Global shape, inclusive charged-particle, and particle-flow distributions are presented. Our measurements are compared with QCD+fragmentation models that use either leading-logarithmic parton-shower evolution or QCD matrix elements at the parton level, and either string or cluster fragmentation for hadronization.

The forward-backward asymmetry of quarks produced in {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} annihilations, summed over all flavors, is measured at {radical}{ital s} between 50 and 60.8 GeV. Methods of determining the charge direction of jet pairs are discussed. The asymmetry is found to agree with the five-flavor standard model.

We present an improved measurement of the standard model CP violation parameter sin2phi_1 (also known as sin2beta) based on a sample of 85 times 10^6 B Bbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. One neutral B meson is reconstructed in a J/psi K_S, psi(2S) K_S, chi_{c1} K_S, eta_c K_S, J/psi K^{*0}, or J/psi K_L CP-eigenstate decay channel and the flavor of the accompanying B meson is identified from its decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time interval between the two B meson decay points, we obtain sin2phi_1 = 0.719 +/- 0.074(stat) +/- 0.035(syst)., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in PRD Rapid Communications

We report the first observation of ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c2}$ production in $B$ meson decays. We find an inclusive $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c2}X$ branching fraction of $({1.80}_{\ensuremath{-}0.28}^{+0.23}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.26)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$. The data set, collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collider, consists of $31.9\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ $B\overline{B}$ events. We also present branching fractions and momentum spectra for both ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c1}$ and ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c2}$ production.

- Abstract
We report observations of radiative B meson decays into the K+pi(-)gamma and K+pi(-)pi(+)gamma final states. In the B0--K+pi(-)gamma channel, we present evidence for decays via an intermediate tensor meson state with a branching fraction of B(B0--K(*)(2)(1430)(0)gamma)=[1.3+/-0.5(stat)+/-0.1(syst)]x10(-5). We measure the branching fraction B(B+--K+pi(-)pi(+)gamma)=[2.4+/-0.5(stat) +0.4-0.2(syst)]x10(-5), in which the B+--K(*0)pi(+)gamma and B+--K+rho(0)gamma channels dominate. The analysis is based on a data set of 29.4 fb(-1) recorded by the Belle experiment at the KEKB collider.

The branching fractions and the decay amplitudes of B -> J/psi K^* decays are measured in a 29.4/fb data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. The decay amplitudes of helicity states of the J/psi K^* system are determined from the full angular distribution of the final state particles in the transversity basis. The branching fractions are measured to be (1.29\pm0.05\pm0.13) \times 10^{-3} for neutral mesons and (1.28\pm0.07\pm0.14) \times 10^{-3} for charged mesons. The measured longitudinal and transverse (perpendicular to the transversity plane) amplitudes are |A_0|^2 = 0.62\pm0.02\pm0.03 and |A_{\perp}|^2 = 0.19\pm0.02\pm0.03, respectively. The value of |A_{\perp}|^2 shows that the CP even component dominates in the B^0 \to J/\psi K^{*0}(K_S\pi^0) decay., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, 5 tables, to appear in Phys. Lett. B

We report the observation of the decay mode $B^{\pm}\to p \bar{p} K^{\pm}$ based on an analysis of 29.4 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB. This is the first example of a $b\to s$ transition with baryons in the final state. The $p \bar{p}$ mass spectrum in this decay is inconsistent with phase space and is peaked at low mass. The branching fraction for this decay is measured to be ${\cal B}(B^{\pm}\to p \bar{p} K^{\pm}) =(4.3^{+1.1}_{-0.9}({\rm stat})\pm 0.5({\rm syst}))\times 10^{-6}.$ We also report upper limits for the decays $B^0\to p \bar{p} K_S$ and $B^{\pm}\to p \bar{p} \pi^{\pm}$.

We report the first observation of chi(c2) production in B meson decays. We find an inclusive B--chi(c2)X branching fraction of (1.80(+0.23)(-0.28)+/-0.26) x 10(-3). The data set, collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider, consists of 31.9 x 10(6) BB events. We also present branching fractions and momentum spectra for both chi(c1) and chi(c2) production.

We present a measurement of the electron spectrum from inclusive semileptonic {\it B} decay, using 5.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $\Upsilon(4S)$ data collected with the Belle detector. A high-momentum lepton tag was used to separate the semileptonic {\it B} decay electrons from secondary decay electrons. We obtained the branching fraction, ${\cal B}(B\to X e^+ \nu) = (10.90 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.49)%$, with minimal model dependence. From this measurement, we derive a value for the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cb}| = 0.0408 \pm 0.0010 {\rm (exp)} \pm 0.0025{\rm (th)}$., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables
