Abstract

The first rapidity density distributions from relativistic collisions between truly heavy nuclei are presented. The distributions are compared with expectations from a linear extrapolation of results obtained from collisions with lighter nuclei. Fluctuations are essentially described by a simple scenario with stochastic emission.

Abstract

We present a systematic study and statistically significant results of different types of correlations, in angles, rapidities and rapidity intervals, between various charged secondary particles produced in inelastic interactions of relativistic nuclei with emulsion at (4.1–4.5) A GeV/c. All types of particles are found to be emitted asymmetrically in the azimuthal plane. This asymmetry increases with the decrease of impact parameter. The two-particle correlation function is found to be positive except in the extreme projectile fragmentation region. Particles from different kinematical regions are emitted back-to-back in the azimuthal plane. A multiparticle correlation is observed between created particles as well as target fragments. This assumes production of clusters. These clusters seem to be formed during the decolouring process. Investigations are being carried out to reveal the characteristics of these clusters.

Abstract

This paper presents data on the emission of helium fragments due to break up of 200 A GeV 32S ions in collision with emulsion nuclei. A total of 499 minimum bias events have been studied in an emulsion stack and 97 events in emulsion chambers. Emission angles of He fragments have been measured with high precision. This data has been compared with data of breakup of heavier as well as lighter projectiles and we observe that the value of the momentum spread, σ(p), increases with increasing projectile mass. The bulk part of the helium emission is consistent with a single source for helium fragments with an average excitation energy of (9.1±0.9) MeV. A tail of a few (

Abstract

Non-statistical fluctuations are used to probe the dynamical behaviour of multi-particle production in heavy-ion interactions at ultra-relativistic energies. In a one-dimensional analysis a 1〈ϱ〉-scaling is established and it is furthermore found that effects from higher-order particle correlations are small. In a two-dimensional analysis it is shown that a small background of particle pairs with a narrow opening angle can distort the observed signal. As an example we estimate the influence of γ-conversion and find that in our experiment γ-conversion alone gives results consistent with the experimental observations from a two-dimensional analysis. Whereas a two-dimensional analysis filters events where two particles are extremely close in phase space, the one-dimensional analysis picks out events with particles clustered in pseudorapidity, which are at the same time diluted in the azimuthal plane.

Abstract

The energy and centrality dependence of local particle pseudorapidity densities as well as validity of various parametrizations of the distributions are examined. The dispersion, σ, of the rapidity density distribution of produced particles varies slowly with centrality and is 0.80, 0.98, 1.21 and 1.41 for central interactions at 3.7, 14.6, 60 and 200A GeV incident energy, respectively, σ is found to be independent of the size of the interacting system at fixed energy. A novel way of representing the window dependence of the multiplicity as normalized variance versus inverse average multiplicity is outlined.

Abstract

Inclusive cross sections for high energy interactions at 0.9, 2.3, 3.6, and 13.5 GeV/nucleon of 16O with C, CR-39 (C12H18O7), CH2, Al, Cu, Ag, and Pb targets were measured. The total charge-changing cross sections and partial charge-changing cross sections for the production of fragments with charge Z = 6 and Z = 7 are compared to previous experiments at 60 and 200 GeV/nucleon. The contributions of Coulomb dissociation to the total cross sections are calculated. Using factorization rules the partial electromagnetic cross sections are separated from the nuclear components. Energy dependence of both components are investigated and discussed.

Abstract

The mass, energy, and centrality dependence of rapidity density distributions of relativistic, charged particles, produced in heavy-ion interactions in the energy range 4A–200A GeV, are investigated. The results indicate that the rapidity density distributions show systematic variations, which are used to predict distributions for Au+Au and Pb+Pb interactions in a model-independent way.

Abstract

The EMU01 Collaboration has employed emulsion chamber and pellicle detectors to accumulate a large database of heavy nucleus interactions. Samples include both minimum bias and central collisions, analyzed in a uniform manner to extract multiplicities and angular distributions of charged particles and nuclear fragments. We find that the main features of these distribution are well represented by geometrical superposition models. A unique feature of EMU01 is the use of emulsion chambers with thin foil targets to observe produced particle angular distributions with exceptionally high precision, permitting extension of fluctuations and correlations analyses beyond the resolution limits imposed by other experimental techniques. The data are generally well reproduced by interaction simulations such as FRITIOF (the Lund monte carlo for nuclear collisons) which include only conventional physics effects. However, the analysis of fluctuations and correlations via factorial moment and cumulant techniques yields some suggestive results which require further investigation, both by continued analysis of existing data and from Au and Pb beam exposures scheduled for the next few years.

Abstract

In this letter we show that most of the fluctuations in particle densities observed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are consistent with stochastic emission, i.e., most of the correlations between produced particles are washed out due to the vast number of particles in the environment. We further explore the general trends by investigating different systems, energies and centrality cuts. Comparisons with the Fritiof model show that string fragmentation gives results similar to the data.

Abstract

The recent status of the EMU01 experiment where nuclear emulsions are used as both target/detector material for horizontally exposed stacks and as detector for vertically exposed chamber plates is discussed. An investigation of the behaviour in the number of produced particles per participating nucleon reveal weak nonlinear effects for the most central collisions. Intermittency index can be obtained from the density distributions for S+Au and S+Ag interactions which corresponds to fractal dimensions somewhat smaller than unity.

Abstract

A recent article interpreted the experiment by Dersch et al. on the formation of 24Na in 40Ar + Cu interactions in a very simple manner. The results from emulsion experiments performed with 3.6 AGeV 22Ne were adapted for the interpretation of the experiments with 1.8 AGeV 40Ar. The model used the same mean value for the energy of minimum ionizing protons and pions at all angles. It is argued that a more complex approach is needed for a satisfactory interpretation.

In the collisions of 4.1 A GeV/c22Ne with AgBr emulsion nuclei, events exhibiting projectile and target fragmentation have been selected. The characteristics of these events are not reproduced by the cascade-evaporation model. The angular distributions and correlation between projectile and target fragments have shown the “bounce off” of the former and the “side splash” of the latter.

The total disintegration is considered of nuclei with atomic weights ∼100 and 200 by high energy hadrons and He4, C12 nuclei with a momentum of 4.5 GeV/c per nucleon. Abstract

In inelastic collisions of protons with photoemulsion nuclei at 4·5 GeV/c, data have been obtained on multiplicity of shower particles, energy spectrum of fast secondary protons with (2·5±0·1) GeV average energy, and energy spectrum of produced charged pions with (640±±50) MeV average energy. The multiplicity, angular distributions, and energy of particles arising from splitting target-nuclei are also determined: the proton spectrum is approximated by the power dependenceE -γ withγ=1·4±0·1. The distribution of protons andπ-mesons over rapiditiesy=0·5 In[(E+p)/(E−p)] have been obtained. The average multiplicity for secondary particles coincide with the predicted values given by the cascade-evaporation model.

Abstract

Analysis of emission of projectile and target fragments in 22Ne+Ag(Br) collisions at 4.1A GeV/c is carried out to study peculiarities of particle 'sideward flow'. The possibility of determining the reaction plane is considered. 'Bounce-off' of 22Ne projectile fragments is observed by investigating their projections onto the reaction plane. The angular distribution of slow fragments has a maximum which is due to 'side splash'. By studying projections onto the azimuthal plane, data on 'sideward flow' are obtained. An increase of ranges is observed for slow fragments emitted in the direction of the 'side splash'.

Abstract

The paper of Dersch et al. [1], concerning the results of inelastic40Ar + Cu collisions at 1.8 and 0.9 GeV per nucleon, is discussed. The authors have explained their experimental results on the basis of the concept of anomalons of a lifetime of ∼2·10−10 s and/or as “inconsistency with known nuclear physics”. It is shown that such conclusions are untenable, and the data presented in the cited paper can be explained within the frame of known physics.

Abstract

New experimental data on proton-nucleus interactions in emulsion at primary momentum 4.5 GeV/c are presented and discussed. The data are systematically compared with predictions of the cascade-evaporation model. The directions of development of the cascade-evaporation model in a region of incident momenta are considered, and some suggestions are made for giving it more precision.

Abstract

1. The selection criteria of central nuclear collisions were investigated, and the field of their applicability was given. The impact parameters of two nuclei for selected events are found to be ≲ 3 fm. 2. Events classified as central collision ones are accompanied by the emission of at least one g-particle emitted backward in the laboratory coordinate system. 3. Both the multiplicity of relativistic (s) particles and the number of pions among them are proportional to the mass of projectile nucleus. 4. The sharp increase in s-particle forward collimation with increasing projectile nucleus mass is related to the increase in inelastically scattered protons of this nucleus. 5. The calculations by the cascade-evaporation model for4He(Ag, Br) collisions answer a qualitative character of experimental data behaviour but overestimate the degree of target nucleus desintegration.

Abstract

Charge distributions of projectile fragments produced in the interactions of 22Ne beams with emulsion at 4.1A GeV/c have been studied. Correlations between projectile and target fragments and among projectile fragments are presented. The change of charge yield distribution with the violence of the collision has been shown. The present analysis contradicts theoretical calculations describing the inclusive charge yield distribution of fragments by a single process.

Abstract

The experimental results of 60 GeV/c π−-nucleon inelastic collisions are compared with the fireball model and with limiting-fragmentation predictions. While the agreement with limiting-fragmentation predictions is not good (at this energy), the comparison with the one-fireball model is good in 15% of the events studied. The measured inelasticity is near to the maximum inelasticity predicted by the quark model. The mass of the fireballs is (2.61 ±0.37) GeV and the average momentum of the emitted pions in the fireball reference system is (213±59) MeV/c.

Abstract

In the study of interactions of 60 GeV/c π− mesons in nuclear emulsion some peculiarities of the prong-number distribution and the angular distribution of secondaries have been observed. They are interpreted in terms of the coherent production of three and five pions on emulsion nuclei. The cross section for these reactions increases with the increasing energy.

Abstract

The inaccuracy of the Castagnoli formula and Duller-Walker diagram, for the interactions of nucleons and pions with nucleons or nuclei at energies up to 10 GeV, is discussed. Using the present experimental data on π+-nucleon and π−-nucleus collisions at 7 GeV/c, it is shown that the shower mechanism in the interactions with nuclei is compatible with the experimental results. Finally, it is shown that on the basis of available experimental results it is not possible to distinguish in the interactions of pions with nuclei collisions with targets of different masses (π, 2π, …, 2N), using the method of the paper (2).

Abstract

Interactions of 60 GeV/cπ− mesons with nucleons, light (C, O) and heavy (Ag, Br) nuclei have been investigated using emulsions of two types: the usual (Br-2) emulsion in which about 13 of the interactions occur on light nuclei and emulsion enriched by (CH2OH). In the latter type the fraction of interactions with free protons increases to 0.12 and with light nuclei to 0.5. It is shown that the mean multiplicity of charged particles in inelastic collisions as a function of energy follows the E0.36±0.04 law. The characteristics of the interactions on C, O and Ag, Br have been studied, and also the coherent interactions of pions with the emulsion nuclei.
