1. Bunch-by-bunch measurements of the betatron tune and the synchronous phase and their applications to beam dynamics at KEKB

Abstract: The betatron tune and the synchronous phase of individual bunches were measured at KEKB, an asymmetric electron/positron circular collider. The measurement was performed under three conditions: a single bunch, and multibunches with and without collision. The coupling impedance of the rings can be estimated from the current dependence of the parameters of a single bunch. The betatron tune along a positron-bunch train indicates variations of the electron cloud density that cause electron cloud instability. Comparing the betatron tune between colliding and noncolliding bunches, the beam-beam tune shift was investigated in regular operation. The coherent beam-beam parameter was evaluated in the two-ring collider with unequal tunes. Transient beam-loading effects were experimentally demonstrated by a phase shift along a bunch train in both rings. A rapid advance in the beam phase was observed, which is considered to be due to the effects of longitudinal wakes.

Abstract: This paper describes the design features and operational status of the RF systems for the KEK B-Factory (KEKB). Two types of new RF cavities have been developed to store very high-intensity beams with many short bunches. The design and performance of the cavities and other critical components, such as the input couplers and HOM dampers, are reported. The configuration of the RF systems is given and descriptions of various control loops are made, including a direct RF feedback loop and a 0-mode damping loop. The effects of transient beam loading due to a bunch gap on bunch phase modulations were simulated and measured. The development of a superconducting crab cavity, which is a component of luminosity upgrade strategy, is also presented.

Abstract: Now we are facing to the age for earth environment.The bottom of Tokyo Bay or Osaka Bay is covered by thick deposit of organic mud.Although it has caused water pollution and much affected to the echological and fishery environment, the solution has not been obtained neither from the viewpoint of study nor from that of administration.In this report, we present about our new findings of the application of the idea of marine hollow “UTSURO” to the purification of organic mud.In “UTSURO”, water is purified by natural energy such as waves or tides, which enables the solar ray to reach the sea bottom and decompose the organic mud.

5. Effects of site-directed removal of N-glycosylation sites in human erythropoietin on its production and biological properties

Abstract: Erythropoietin (Epo) has three N-linked sugar chains. Codons for asparagine at N-glycosylation sites in genomic human Epo DNA were replaced with those for glutamine. The wild-type Epo gene and seven mutants that lacked N-glycosylation sites in every possible combination were introduced into baby hamster-kidney cells. To study the role of the N-linked sugars in Epo biosynthesis, Epo protein expressed transiently was measured by an enzyme-linked immunoassay. The elimination of all three N-glycosylation sites decreased Epo production to 10% of that of the wild-type Epo. Wild-type and mutant Epos produced by stably transfected cells were partially purified to investigate their properties. Removal of N-glycosylation sites changed affinity of Epo to the receptor. The in vitro activity of Epo that lost all N-glycosylation sites was comparable with that of the wild-type Epo, while the in vivo activity severely decreased. These results indicate that N-linked sugars of Epo have two major functions; N-linked sugars are important for 1) proper biosynthesis and/or secretion and 2) expression of the in vivo activity probably by enhancing survival in the circulation. N-Linked sugars of Epo affect binding affinity of the ligand to the receptor but do not play a key role in expression of the in vitro activity.

Abstract: Crab cavities have been installed in the KEKB B-factory rings to compensate the crossing angle at the collision point and thus increase luminosity. The beam operation with crab crossing has been done since February 2007. This is the first experience with such cavities in colliders or storage rings. The crab cavities have been working without serious issues. While higher specific luminosity than the geometrical gain has been achieved, further study is necessary and under way to reach the prediction of simulation.

Abstract: A small angle crab scheme is being considered for the LHC luminosity upgrade. In this paper we present a 400 MHz superconducting cavity design and discuss the pertinent RF challenges. We also present a study on the beam-beam performance and proton-beam emittance growth in the presence of crab compensation, with RF noise sources.

Abstract: At KEKB, a dedicated machine experiment on crab crossing has been carried out for about 4.5 months. Some of the beam-beam effects observed with crab crossing, which include a beam lifetime issue, are discussed in comparison with those with a finite crossing angle of plusmn11 mrad.

Abstract: We present the first evidence of the decay B-→τ-ντ, using 414fb-1 of data collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. Events are tagged by fully reconstructing one of the B mesons in hadronic modes. We detect the signal with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations including systematics and measure the branching fraction to be B(B-→τ-ντ)=(1.79-0.49+0.56(stat) -0.51+0.46(syst))×10-4. This implies that fB=0.229-0.031+0.036(stat)-0. 037+0.034(syst)GeV and is the first direct measurement of this quantity. © 2006 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: For the design of crab cavities for SuperKEKB, a very high beam current with a short bunch length should be taken into account. We propose new damped-structure of crab cavities for SuperKEKB. It has a high kick voltage, sufficiently low coupling impedance to any parasitic modes including the lower-frequency mode, and a considerably low loss factor.

Abstract: We report the observation of the decay B0-->pi(0)pi(0), using a 253 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider. The measured branching fraction is B(B0-->pi(0)pi(0))=(2.3(+0.4+0.2)(-0.5-0.3))x10(-6), with a significance of 5.8 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties. We also make a measurement of the direct CP violating asymmetry in this mode.

Abstract: We report the observation of the decay B0--pi(0)pi(0), using a 253 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider. The measured branching fraction is B(B0--pi(0)pi(0))=(2.3(+0.4+0.2)(-0.5-0.3))x10(-6), with a significance of 5.8 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties. We also make a measurement of the direct CP violating asymmetry in this mode.

Abstract: The evidence for direct charged particles (CP) violation in the decay B0→K+ π- was investigated with 253 fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e- collider. 275 x 106 BB pairs were used to observe a B→K±π∓ signal with 2140 ±53 events. Mixing induced CP violation in the B sector was established in b → ccs transitions. The result suggests large interference between tree and penguin diagrams and the existence of final state interactions.

Abstract: The CP violation parameters in Bo → π +π- decay were investigated. The flavor of the accompanying B meson was identified by reconstructing B o→π+π- CP eigenstate. It was observed that the expected sensitivity was optimized using the ratio LR. The study showed that there was a direct CP violation with a significance at or greater than 3.2σ.

17. High intensity issues for super B-factories

Abstract: The present B-factories, KEKB and PEP-II, have achieved or exceeded their design luminosities. A luminosity of 10/sup 34/ cm/sup -2/ s/sup -1/ has become a reality. As upgrading of these machines to increase the luminosity further by ten times or more to extend the physics coverage, Super B-factories are being considered. Beam current should be about 10 A in the Low Energy Ring (LER) and 4 A in the High Energy Ring (HER), or even much higher, with a short bunch length of about 3 mm. It is very challenging for various hardware components, especially for RF system and beam-line vacuum components, to store such an extremely high beam current. Crab crossing is also considered to drastically increase the beam-beam tune shift limit, that results in a further increase of the luminosity. In this paper, high intensity issues for the Super B-factories are discussed.

Abstract: We have performed a search for the lepton-flavor-violating decay tau -> mu gamma using a data sample of 86.3fb^{-1} accumulated by the Belle detector at KEK. No evidence for a signal is seen, and we set an upper limit for the branching fraction of B(tau -> mu gamma) < 3.1 x 10^{-7} at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We report the first observation of CP violation in B0--pi(+)pi(-) decays based on 152x10(6) gamma (4S)--BB decays collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. We reconstruct a B0--pi(+)pi(-) CP eigenstate and identify the flavor of the accompanying B meson from its decay products. From the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points, we obtain A(pipi)=+0.58+/-0.15(stat)+/-0.07(syst) and S(pipi)=-1.00+/-0.21(stat)+/-0.07(syst). We rule out the CP-conserving case, A(pipi)=S(pipi)=0, at a level of 5.2 standard deviations. Abstract: We report the first observation of the B-->(D) over barD(sJ)(2317) and B-->(D) over barD(sJ)(2457) decays based on 123.8x10(6) B (B) over bar events collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. We observe the D-sJ(2317) decay to D(s)pi(0) and the D-sJ(2457) decay to the D(s)(*)pi(0) and D(s)gamma final states. We also set 90% C.L. upper limits for the decays D-sJ(2317)-->D-s*gamma, D-sJ(2457)-->D-s*gamma, D-sJ(2457)-->D(s)pi(0), and D-sJ(2457)-->D(s)pi(+)pi(-).

Abstract: We report the observation of the flavor-changing neutral current decay B-->K*l(+l-) and an improved measurement of the decay B-->Kl(+l-), where l represents an electron or a muon, with a data sample of 140 fb(-1) accumulated at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB. The results for the branching fractions are B(B-->K*l(+l-))=(11.5(-2.4)(+2.6)+/-0.8+/-0.2)x10(-7) and B(B-->Kl(+l-))=(4.8(-0.9)(+1.0)+/-0.3+/-0.1)x10(-7), where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is from model dependence.

Abstract: We report the observation of a narrow charmoniumlike state produced in the exclusive decay process B+/--->K+/-pi(+)pi(-)J/psi. This state, which decays into pi(+)pi(-)J/psi, has a mass of 3872.0+/-0.6(stat)+/-0.5(syst) MeV, a value that is very near the M(D0)+M(D(*0)) mass threshold. The results are based on an analysis of 152M B-Bmacr; events collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance in the Belle detector at the KEKB collider. The signal has a statistical significance that is in excess of 10sigma.

Abstract: We have performed a search for the lepton-flavor-violating decay tau--microgamma using a data sample of 86.3 fb(-1) accumulated by the Belle detector at KEK. No evidence for a signal is seen, and we set an upper limit for the branching fraction of B(tau--microgamma)3.1 x 10(-7) at the 90% confidence level.

This state, which decays into pi(+)pi(-)J/psi, has a mass of 3872.0+/-0.6(stat)+/-0.5(syst) MeV, a value that is very near the M(D0)+M(D(*0)) mass threshold. The results are based on an analysis of 152M B-Bmacr; events collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance in the Belle detector at the KEKB collider. The signal has a statistical significance that is in excess of 10sigma.

Abstract: We report evidence for the decay B0--pi(0)pi(0). The analysis is based on a data sample of 152x10(6) BBmacr; pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) storage ring. We detect a signal for B0--pi(0)pi(0) with a significance of 3.4 standard deviations, and measure the branching fraction to be [1.7+/-0.6(stat)+/-0.2(syst)]x10(-6).

Abstract: We present an improved measurement of CP-violation parameters in B0--phiK(0)(S), K(+)K(-)K(0)(S), and eta(')K(0)(S) decays based on a 140 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. One neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in one of the specified decay channels, and the flavor of the accompanying B meson is identified from its decay products. CP-violation parameters for each of the three modes are obtained from the asymmetries in the distributions of the proper-time intervals between the two B decays. We find that the observed CP asymmetry in the B--phiK(0)(S) decay differs from the standard model (SM) expectation by 3.5 standard deviations, while the other cases are consistent with the SM.

Abstract: We report the first observation of the B--Dmacr;D(sJ)(2317) and B--Dmacr;D(sJ)(2457) decays based on 123.8x10(6) BBmacr; events collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. We observe the D(sJ)(2317) decay to D(s)pi(0) and the D(sJ)(2457) decay to the D(*)(s)pi(0) and D(s)gamma final states. We also set 90% C.L. upper limits for the decays D(sJ)(2317)--D(*)(s)gamma, D(sJ)(2457)--D(*)(s)gamma, D(sJ)(2457)--D(s)pi(0), and D(sJ)(2457)--D(s)pi(+)pi(-).

Abstract: We present an improved measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in B 0→π+π- decays based on a 78 fb -1 data sample collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ e- collider. We reconstruct one neutral B meson as a B0→π+π - CP eigenstate and identify the flavor of the accompanying B meson from inclusive properties of its decay products. We apply an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points. The fit yields the CP-violating asymmetry amplitudes A ππ= +0.77 ±0.27(stat) ±0.08(syst) and S ππ=-1.23 ±0.41(stat) -0.07 +0.08(syst), where the statistical uncertainties are determined from the Monte Carlo pseudoexperiments. We obtain confidence intervals for CP-violating asymmetry parameters Aππ and Sππ based on a frequentist approach. We rule out the CP-conserving case, A ππ=Sππ=0, at the 99.93% confidence level. We discuss how these results constrain the value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) angle φ2. © 2003 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The superconducting cavity (SCC) for KEKB is 508 MHz single-cell cavity that has large beam pipes (22 cm and 30 cm i.d.) so that higher-order modes propagate out of the cavity and be absorbed by a lossy material. The input coupler is the TRISTAN-type coaxial one with some modifications such that dc bias voltage can be applied to avoid multipactoring during beam operation, fins to efficiently cool the outer conductor and a heater to remove condensed gases. The higher-order mode absorber is made of ferrite directly sinter-bonded on the inner surface of the copper pipe using a technique called hot isostatic press (HIP). One prototype cavity was tested up to 0.57 A at the TRISTAN Accumulation Ring (AR) in 1996. Then, four cavities were constructed for KEKB. One of the cavities achieved an accelerating field of 19 MV/m at a test in a vertical cryostat; this field is the world record at this frequency to our knowledge. No degradation of the field after assembly into horizontal cryostats was observed up to the available power of 300 kW that corresponds to /spl sim/12 MV/m. These four cavities were installed in KEKB tunnel and are expected to supply 6 MV in total voltage to the 1.1 A electron beam in high energy ring (HER). Since beam commissioning started in Dec. 1998, the system has been supplying 6 MV and working very smoothly without any trouble. The maximum current has been /spl sim/240 mA and power delivered to beam per cavity is /spl sim/200 kW up to the end of Feb., 1999.

Abstract: We have measured beta functions using single kick closed orbit at KEKB. The measured beta functions were compared with the model lattice and gradient errors were extracted from the result in a beta beat. The gradient errors were also obtained by changing strength of steering magnets and measuring beam positions as the second method. The methods of the error estimation and preliminary results are reported.

Abstract: The Japan National Laboratory for High-Energy Physics (KEK) has proposed building a Test Accelerator Facility (TAF) capable of producing a 2.5 GeV electron beam for stimulating R&D for a linear collider in the tera-electronvolt region. The TAF consists of a 1.5 GeV S-band linear accelerator, a 1.5 GeV damping ring, and a 1.0 GeV X-band linear accelerator. The TAF project will be carried forward in three phases. Through phase-I and phase-II, the S-band and X-band linacs will be constructed, and in phase-III, the damping ring will be completed. The construction of TAF phase-I has started, and the 0.2 GeV S-band injector linac is almost complete. The phase-I linac is composed of a 240 keV electron gun, subharmonic bunchers, prebunchers, and a traveling buncher followed by high-gradient accelerating structures. >

Abstract: A method of robust stabilization with a prescribed degree of stability is proposed for a class of systems with additive unstructured uncertainty. The method enables an effective tradeoff to be made between the expected control performance and the estimated model uncertainty. The method is successfully applied to the control of a flexible arm. The synthesis based on this method is free from the spillover effect and exhibits a fast response with good suppression of elastic vibration, as well as substantial robustness. >

Abstract: The energy upgrade of TRISTAN by a superconducting RF system is progressing. Sixteen five-cell 508 MHz cavities made of niobium have been installed and started to operate in November 1988. Superconducting cavities have raised the energy of e/sup -/e/sup +/ to 30.4 GeV from 28.5 GeV with a normal conducting RF system. Abstract: A series of beam tests using TRISTAN Accumulation Ring (AR) was dedicated to verify the feasibility of RF system and other components planned for KEKB, the B Factory project at KEK. In this paper, we describe the results on higher order mode (HOM) absorbers used for superconducting cavities (SCC). The absorber was manufactured by HIPping of ferrite powder onto Cu tube. The SCC system was operated stably with HOM's being damped, and up to total of 4.2 kW was absorbed through the absorber without any problem.

Abstract: Dedicated machine time of about 10 weeks has been devoted to the high beam current experiment by using an electron beam of the TRISTAN Accumulation Ring (AR). In the experiment, we investigated the performance of prototypes of RF cavity systems and a bunch-by-bunch feedback system which will be used in the KEKB. We found that the RF cavity systems work very well at beam currents of more than 500 mA. The bunch feedback system was very effective in suppressing the instability. We also made an experiment on the fast ion instability with interesting results.

Abstract: Two types of ARES cavities were tested in the TRISTAN accumulation ring in KEK. In this paper, results relating to the fundamental mode in the accelerating cavity are reported. The status of the cavity, including the detuning frequency under beam loading and the output power from the coupling cavity damper, was measured at different beam current and with various bunch patterns. Its behavior agrees well with the calculation based on a coupled resonator model.

Abstract: For the feasibility study of a superconducting damped cavity for a KEK B-factory, a prototype module was constructed and tested in the TRISTAN Accumulation Ring. This module accelerated the beam current of 500 mA with the cavity voltage of 1-2 MV, and 350 mA with 2.5 MV (10.3 MV/m). These currents were limited by heating up of other ring components. The peak current of 573 mA was achieved in 16 bunches with 1.2 MV.

Abstract: The ARES (Accelerator Resonantly coupled with an Energy Storage) cavity, which consists of three cells, has been developed for the KEK B-Factory, and two types of the ARES cavity have been constructed for the beam test. Both the types were installed in the KEK TRISTAN Accumulation Ring and beam-tested. The accelerating cell of the ARES has a HOM-damped structure to lower the impedance of HOMs in order to store a high current beam. The spectra excited by the beam (single bunch, 100 mA) were measured for both the cavities with scanning of the resonant frequency. Basically these results are consistent with those of calculations. The HOMs appear to be damped as expected. But the actual spectra for three cells are more complicated than only the accelerating cell. During this experiment, however, any beam instabilities due to the impedance of the cavities were not observed. This paper describes only the "ARES95"-one of the two types of the ARES.

44. Coupling cavity damper for the ARES

Abstract: The coaxial (WX120D) antenna damper has been developed for damping the parasitic 0 and /spl pi/ modes of the KEKB ARES cavity. It is installed in the coupling cavity of the ARES. The damper consists of a disk-type coaxial ceramic window and a cross stub angle. The damper has a broadband RF property in order to absorb the RF power of the parasitic modes. The cross angle is utilized for supplying the cooling water to the antenna. The damper was designed by using a computer simulation code without a cold model test. Finally the properties of the damper has been confirmed by the high-power and the beam test for the ARES cavity.

Abstract: In a large ring with extremely heavy beam loading, such as a B-factory, it is possible that the accelerating mode, itself, gives rise to a longitudinal coupled-bunch instability. In order to solve this problem, T. Shintake (1993) has proposed to attach a TE015-mode storage cavity to an accelerating cavity. It has subsequently been shown that the system can be put into practical use if a coupling cavity is added in between the two cavities. The three-cavity system, which is now referred to as an accelerator resonantly coupled with an energy storage (ARES), is under development for the KEKB.

Abstract: The HOM absorber for the normal conducting RF cavity of the KEK B-factory (KEKB) was designed. Sixteen bullet-shape sintered SiC (silicon carbide) ceramics are used for HOM absorption. The HOM power to be handled will be about 10 kW per cavity, corresponding to about 1 kW per absorber. A prototype of SiC absorber was made to verify the performance as a HOM absorber in vacuum. The high power test was carried out successfully using a pulsed klystron (f=1296 MHz). The design of the HOM absorber and the results of the high power test are discussed.

Abstract: The ARES (Accelerator Resonantly coupled with Energy Storage) structure is a three-cavity system operated in the /spl pi//2 mode, where a HOM-damped accelerating cavity is coupled with an energy storage cavity via a coupling cavity equipped with a coaxial antenna damper to reduce the impedances of the parasitic 0 and /spl pi/ modes. Two high-power prototypes with different HOM-damping schemes have been developed, where one is with a quadrupole counter-mixing (QCM) choke structure and the other with grooved beam pipe one. Both prototypes have been tested with an electron beam of about 500 mA in the TRISTAN accumulation ring. This paper reports their RF structures together with some results of the high-power and high-current beam tests.

Abstract: Two types of sintered SiC (silicon carbide) ceramics have been developed and applied as the HOM absorbers for the second prototype ARES cavity (ARES96). One is bullet-shape SiC ceramics and the other is a tile one. The prototype cavity equipped with these absorbers was successfully tested with an electron beam in the TRISTAN accumulation ring. High power tests of these absorbers were carried out using an L-band RF power source. The HOM absorber designs and the results of the tests are discussed.

50. Development of a HOM-damped cavity for the KEK B-factory (KEKB)

Abstract: This paper describes a high-power test model of the normal conducting RF cavity for the KEK B Factory, KEKB. This cavity is loaded with a large coaxial waveguide for higher order mode (HOM) damping. The waveguide is equipped with a notch filter designed to block the TEM wave at the accelerating frequency of 509 MHz. Other waves coupled with the cavity HOMs are guided through the filter and absorbed by bullet-shape sintered SiC ceramics. This prototype model has been designed and built to demonstrate the performance in high power operation and the fabrication technologies involved. The results of the high-power test is reported together with the cavity structure and its RF properties.
