1. MARINER 4.0: INTEGRATING SEAFARERS INTO A MARITIME 4.0 ENVIRONMENT

Abstract

Digitalisation of systems and processes in the maritime industry are spurring Maritime 4.0, a digital transformation promising enormous gains, including improved design processes and reduced operational costs. Gleaning inter-disciplinary proficiency from Operator 4.0 in manufacturing, the present work seeks to introduce the Mariner 4.0 – a seafaring passenger or crew member with technologically augmented skills. This research aims to realise Mariner 4.0 through a human digital twin solution – a virtual representation of the state and behaviour of a unique individual over time – for seafarers on South Africa’s polar research and supply vessel, the SA Agulhas II. This paper presents human-related challenges identified within seafaring vessels, the expected value of human digital twin solutions for the maritime industry, the development of a human digital twin solution to integrate seafarers into a Maritime 4.0 environment (i.e. the development of Mariner 4.0), and an illustrative use case focussing on human comfort monitoring and management.

7. Role of Hepatic Macrophages in Acute and Chronic Injury and Repair

Abstract

Under optimal physiologic conditions, liver resident macrophages, such as Kupffer cells, are abundant in maintaining homeostasis. They orchestrate postinjury inflammatory tissue remodeling, surveil malignant microbial organisms, and remove toxins. Nevertheless, during chronic inflammation and wound healing in the liver, hepatic infiltration of immune cells from the bone marrow, peritoneum, and lymph nodes can promote the maintenance of macrophages subsets that exacerbate liver injury. Depending on the span of the inflammation and the extent of the damage, the liver can undergo acute liver injury or chronic liver injury. In this review, we explain the role of macrophages in the innate immune system, specifically discussing the role of the immune innate system and the description of Kupffer cells. The review also discusses macrophage activity in acute and chronic liver diseases, such as acetaminophen-induced injury, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis/nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and alcoholic liver disease. Finally, the review also discuss Kupffer cell mechanisms for liver repair and regeneration.

11. A wood gasification stove for domestic use: Performance and emission factors using locally available fuel

Abstract

It has been shown that large numbers of low-income SA households use wood for domestic cooking and space-heating purposes are exposed to high concentrations of air pollutants emitted from the unsophisticated appliances being utilised. Although the related problem of exposure remains a pressing problem. The design of a more efficient wood using appliance therefore has the potential to reduce the particalate matter exposure of a considerable portion of the SA population. This paper presents the results of testing a natural draft wood gasification stove for domestic use based o the inverted downdraft principle. Prototypes have been built in two sizes, suitable for relatively unsophisticated manufacturing techniques. The results of performance and emission factor testing using a laboratory fuel as well as fuel obtained from the local progamme for eradication of invasive tree species (known as Working for Water) are presented. It is shown that simple wood gasification stoves can result in a considerable reduction in exposure of household members to particulate matter inhalation.

Abstract

The project addresses insect-borne prokaryote-associated diseases of palm, citrus and grapevine in tropical and subtropical areas seriously affecting the trade and import of agricultural products and materials worldwide. These diseases are due to the presence of ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma’ associated with “lethal yellowing” in palms and “yellows” in grapevine, and ‘Ca. Liberibacter’ associated with “huanglongbing” in citrus. Their negative impact on agriculture may be worsened as a result of climate change. The management of these diseases is exploited in Africa (Ghana, South Africa and Mozambique), the Americas (Mexico, Chile, Guadalupe, Jamaica, and Cuba), and Europe in selected areas where the prevalence of these diseases is severe giving rise to social and economic threats, affecting local agriculture and export of products. Knowledge and technologies available for detection and identification of these pathogens and new ones implemented by the project will be applied in the studied regions for epidemiological studies aimed at filling knowledge gaps. Integrated pest management strategies based also on innovative diagnostic and on exploited prevention tools such as reduced insecticide treatments, and improved resistant germplasm are applied and pest risk assessment schemes developed. The solutions that are under testing are evaluated to assess the economic and social impact of these diseases, and their distributive effects on the rural communities in the target countries The 22 partners from 12 countries are collaborating with local plant protection organizations, farmers and producers who are actively participating in training and practical application of the developed tools and schemes for the exploitation of the project outcome and results.

Abstract

Introduction Continuous reliable evaluating of left ventricular (LV) contractile function in patients with advanced heart failure requiring intensive care remains challenging. Recently, continual monitoring of dP/dtmax from arterial line became available for hemodynamic monitoring. However, the relation between arterial dP/dtmax and LV dP/dtmax measurement is not fully understood. Purpose The aim of our study was to determine the relation of arterial dP/dtmax and LV dP/dtmax assessed by echocardiography in patients with acute heart failure. Methods Forty-eight patients with acute heart failure requiring intensive care and hemodynamic monitoring were recruited into the study (mean age 70.4 years, 65% were males). Hemodynamic variables including arterial dP/dtmax were continually monitored using arterial line pressure waveform analysis. LV dP/dtmax was assessed using continuous-wave Doppler analysis of mitral regurgitation flow. Results The values from continual arterial dP/dtmax monitoring significantly correlated with the LV dP/dtmax assessed by echocardiography (r=0.72, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.54–0.83, P Conclusion Our results revealed that arterial dP/dtmax values tightly and highly significantly correlate with LV dP/dtmax. 14. Grapevine 'bois noir': what is new under the sun?

Abstract

The diseases associated with phytoplasmas in grapevine are collectively called yellows and occur in the majority of grapevine growing regions over the world. Among these diseases the “bois noir” is the most widespread and in most of the cases is it endemic in vineyards. Molecular variability was reported in the ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma solani’ (“stolbur”, 16SrXII-A) infecting grapevines, and in some cases a link to epidemiological aspect of the genomic features detected by MLT was hypotized. Statistical modeling to allow the prediction of the disease in specific grapevine growing areas is also developed. Studies about grapevine- “bois noir” phytoplasma interaction were focusing on some of the main genes regulated in the plant response. A study linking wine production and quality from healthy and “bois noir” infected grapevines showed the negative influence of the disease on wine production but only when the weather conditions were favorable to the production. Perspectives for improved management of the “bois noir” disease were also explored.

EUDAQ is a generic data acquisition software developed for use in conjunction with common beam telescopes at charged particle beam lines. Providing high-precision reference tracks for performance studies of new sensors, beam telescopes are essential for the research and development towards future detectors for high-energy physics. As beam time is a highly limited resource, EUDAQ has been designed with reliability and ease-of-use in mind. It enables flexible integration of different independent devices under test via their specific data acquisition systems into a top-level framework. EUDAQ controls all components globally, handles the data flow centrally and synchronises and records the data streams. Abstract

This paper presents results obtained with the combined CALICE Scintillator Electromagnetic Calorimeter, Analogue Hadronic Calorimeter and Tail Catcher & Muon Tracker, three high granularity scintillator-SiPM calorimeter prototypes. The response of the system to pions with momenta between 4 GeV/c and 32 GeV/c is analysed, including the energy response, resolution, and longitudinal shower profiles. The results of a software compensation technique based on weighting according to hit energy are compared to those of a standard linear energy reconstruction. Abstract

Short sleep duration among children and adolescents has been reported to be associated with elevated BMI and other adverse health outcomes. Food choices are one proposed mechanism through which this association may occur. In the present study, we examined whether self-reported habitual sleep duration is associated with vegetable and fruit consumption and fast food consumption. Using cross-sectional data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (n13 284), we estimated three nested logistic regression models for two outcome variables: daily vegetable and fruit consumption and previous week's fast food consumption. The adjusted models included demographic and social/behavioural covariates. Self-reported habitual short sleep duration ( 8 h/night) (OR 0·66,P <0·001), even after adjusting for demographic and social/behavioural factors (OR 0·75,P <0·001). Short sleep duration was also associated with increased odds of fast food consumption (OR 1·40,P <0·001) even after adjustment (OR 1·20,P <0·05). Food choices are significantly associated with sleep duration and may play an important role in the mediation of the association between sleep and health among adolescents.

19. Management and complications associated with treatment of cervical oesophageal perforations in horses

Abstract

Summary Six horses were evaluated for colic and anorexia, choke or suspected oesophageal rupture with and without tracheal laceration. Clinical findings were variable, but a painful ventral neck swelling was noted in all cases. Two of the horses had signs of dehydration and sepsis. Additional findings included evidence of previous trauma over the trachea and oesophagus, ventral neck abscessation, choke and aspiration pneumonia. A diagnosis of oesophageal perforation was made using endoscopy. Two horses were subjected to euthanasia without treatment. All horses where treatment was attempted received debridement of the oesophageal perforation and surrounding tissues with or without surgical closure of the oesophageal defect. Other therapies included broad spectrum antimicrobials, anti-inflammatory drugs, fluid and nutritional support as well as additional therapeutics for sepsis and individual complications. Complications included diverticulum formation, thrombophlebitis, diarrhoea, laryngeal hemiplegia, azotaemia, aspiration pneumonia, oesophageal obstruction, weight loss and laminitis. All 4 treated horses recovered from the oesophageal perforation and are able to eat a normal diet. Two of the 4 horses have had infrequent episodes of recurrent choke. Oesophageal rupture should be considered as a differential diagnosis for horses with a painful swelling of the ventral neck. With surgical debridement and adequate supportive care, oesophageal perforation cases can have a fair to good long-term survival, although chronic complications can occur, therapy is prolonged, and a significant economic commitment is required.

Abstract

Articulated arm robots have become critical components in the modern manufacturing environment, effectively performing a diverse range of manufacturing tasks. Robots offer flexibility through re-programmability — however, robot programming remains a time consuming task which requires highly skilled operators. Aiming to reduce the required time and complexity of robot programming, this paper presents an alternative programming method based on the capture of demonstrated motions. Early experimental results show a significant reduction in programming time compared to a standard online programming method.

Abstract

The Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) sits at the outermost part of the ATLAS Inner Detector, encasing the Pixel Detector and the Semi-Conductor Tracker (SCT). The TRT combines charged particle track reconstruction with electron identification capability. This is achieved by layers of xenon-filled straw tubes with periodic radiator foils or fibers providing TR photon emission. The design and choice of materials have been optimized to cope with the harsh operating conditions at the LHC, which are expected to lead to an accumulated radiation dose of 10 Mrad and a neutron fluence of up to 2middot1014 n/cm2 after ten years of operation. The TRT comprises a barrel containing 52 000 axial straws and two end-cap parts with 320 000 radial straws. The total of 420 000 electronic channels (two channels per barrel straw) allows continuous tracking with many projective measurements (more than 30 straw hits per track). The assembly of the barrel modules in the US has recently been completed, while the end-cap wheel construction in Russia has reached the 50% mark. After testing at the production sites and shipment to CERN, all modules and wheels undergo a series of quality and conformity measurements. These acceptance tests survey dimensions, wire tension, gas-tightness, high-voltage stability and gas-gain uniformity along each individual straw. Abstract

Events with a final state consisting of two or more photons and large missing transverse energy have been observed in e + e − collisions at centre-of-mass energies in the range 192–209 GeV using the OPAL detector at LEP. Cross-section measurements are performed within the kinematic acceptance of the selection and compared with the expectations from the Standard Model process e + e − → ν ν ¯ γ γ ( γ ) . No evidence for new physics contributions to this final state is observed. Upper limits on σ ( e + e − → X X ) ⋅ BR 2 ( X → Y γ ) are derived for the case of stable and invisible Y. In the case of massive Y the combined limits obtained from all the data range from 10 to 60 fb, while for the special case of massless Y the range is 20 to 40 fb. The limits apply to pair production of excited neutrinos ( X = ν * , Y = ν ), to neutralino production ( X = χ ˜ 2 0 , Y = χ ˜ 1 0 ) and to supersymmetric models in which X = χ ˜ 1 0 and Y = G ˜ is a light gravitino.

Abstract

A search for the Higgsstrahlung process e + e − → hZ is described, where the neutral Higgs boson h is assumed to decay into hadronic final states. In order to be sensitive to a broad range of models, the search is performed independent of the flavour content of the Higgs boson decay. The analysis is based on e + e − collision data collected by the OPAL detector at energies between 192 and 209 GeV. The search does not reveal any significant excess over the Standard Model background prediction. Results are combined with previous searches at energies around 91 and at 189 GeV. A limit is set on the product of the cross-section and the hadronic branching ratio of the Higgs boson, as a function of the Higgs boson mass. Assuming the hZ coupling predicted by the Standard Model, and a Higgs boson decaying only into hadronic final states, a lower bound of 104 GeV / c 2 is set on the mass at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract

Bose-Einstein correlations between like-sign charged-particle pairs in e(+)e(-) --> W+ W- events recorded with the OPAL detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies between 183 GeV and 209 GeV are studied. Recently proposed methods which allow direct searches for correlations in the data via distributions of test variables are used to investigate the presence of correlations between hadrons originating from different W bosons in W+W- --> q (q) over barq (q) over bar events. Within the statistics of the data sample no evidence for inter - WW Bose-Einstein correlations is obtained. The data are also compared with predictions of a recent implementation of Bose-Einstein correlation effects in the Monte Carlo model PYTHIA.

Abstract

The ATLAS Inner Detector consists of three sub-systems, the Pixel Detector at the innermost radius, the Semi-Conductor Tracker at intermediate radii, and the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) at the outermost radius in front of the electromagnetic calorimeter. The TRT provides a combination of continuous tracking with many projective measurements based on individual drift-tubes (or straws) and of electron identification based on radiator fibres or foils interleaved between the straws themselves. This paper describes the current status of design and construction of the various components of the TRT: the assembly of the barrel modules has recently been completed, that of the end-cap wheels is well underway, and the on-detector front-end electronics is in production. The detector modules and front-end electronics boards will be integrated together over the next year, the barrel and end-cap TRT parts will be assembled and tested with their SCT counterparts during 2005 and installation and commissioning in the ATLAS pit will take place at the end of 2005 and the beginning of 2006. The ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) performance depends critically on the choice of the active gas and on its properties. The most important operational aspects, which have led to the final choice of the active gas for the operation of the TRT at the LHC design luminosity, are presented. The TRT performance expected at these conditions is reviewed, including pile-up effects at high luminosity.

Abstract

A search for single production of doubly-charged Higgs bosons has been performed using 600.7 pb^-1 of e+e- collision data with sqrt(s)=189--209GeV collected by the OPAL detector at LEP. No evidence for the existence of H++/-- is observed. Upper limits on the Yukawa coupling of the H++/-- to like-signed electron pairs are derived. Additionally, indirect constraints on the Yukawa coupling from Bhabha scattering, where the H++/-- would contribute via t-channel exchange, are derived for M(H++/--) < 2TeV. These are the first results for both a single production search and constraints from Bhabha scattering reported from LEP., 20 pages, 9 figures, Submitted to Phys. Lett. B

Abstract

A search for stable and long-lived massive particles of electric charge |Q/e|=1 or fractional charges of 2/3, 4/3, and 5/3 is reported using data collected by the OPAL detector at LEP, at centre-of-mass energies from 130 to 209 GeV. These particles are assumed to be pair-produced in e+e- collisions and not to interact strongly. No evidence for the production of these particles was observed. Model-independent upper limits on the production cross-section between 0.005 and 0.028 pb have been derived for scalar and spin-1/2 particles with charge +-1. Within the framework of the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM), this implies a lower limit of 98.0 (98.5) GeV on the mass of long-lived right (left)- handed scalar muons and scalar taus. Long-lived charged heavy leptons and charginos are excluded for masses below 102.0 GeV. For particles with fractional charge +-2/3, +-4/3, and +-5/3, the upper limit on the production cross-section varies between 0.005 and 0.020 pb. All mass and cross-section limits are derived at the 95% confidence level and are valid for particles with lifetimes longer than 10-6s. Abstract

A search was performed for charginos with masses close to the mass of the lightest neutralino in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 189-209 GeV recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP. Events were selected if they had an observed high-energy photon from initial state radiation, reducing the dominant background from two-photon scattering to a negligible level. No significant excess over Standard Model expectations has been observed in the analysed data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 570pb-1. Upper limits were derived on the chargino pair-productin cross-section, and lower limits on the chargino mass were derived in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the Standard Model for the gravity and anomaly mediated Supersymmetry breaking scenarios., 26 pages, 9 figures

The techniques to measure the position of sense wires and field wires, the gas gain and the gas flow rate inside wire chambers using a collimated and filtered X-ray beam are reported. Specific examples are given using barrel modules of the Transition Radiation Tracker of the ATLAS experiment.

Abstract

The tau -> mu nu nu branching ratio has been measured using data collected from 1990 to 1995 by the OPAL detector at the LEP collider. The resulting value of B(tau -> mu nu nu) = 0.1734 +- 0.0009(stat) +- 0.0006(syst) has been used in conjunction with other OPAL measurements to test lepton universality, yielding the coupling constant ratios gmu/ge=1.0005+-0.0044 and gt/ge=1.0031+-0.0048, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction of unity. A value for the Michel parameter eta = 0.004 +- 0.037 has also been determined and used to find a limit for the mass of the charged Higgs boson mH+- > 1.25 tan beta, in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

Abstract

A combination is presented of the inclusive deep inelastic cross sections measured by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations in neutral and charged current unpolarised e ± p scattering at HERA during the period 1994-2000. The data span six orders of magnitude in negative four-momentum-transfer squared, Q 2, and in Bjorken x. The combination method used takes the correlations of systematic uncertainties into account, resulting in an improved accuracy. The combined data are the sole input in a NLO QCD analysis which determines a new set of parton distributions, HERAPDF1.0, with small experimental uncertainties. Abstract

Journal of Instrumentation 12(05), P05009 (2017). doi:10.1088/1748-0221/12/05/P05009, The high granularity of the CALICE Semi-Digital Hadronic CALorimeter (SDHCAL)provides the capability to reveal the track segments present in hadronic showers. These segmentsare then used as a tool to probe the behaviour of the active layers in situ, to better reconstructthe energy of these hadronic showers and also to distinguish them from electromagnetic ones. Inaddition, the comparison of these track segments in data and the simulation helps to discriminateamong the different shower models used in the simulation. Abstract

A special tunable fiber-ring laser is introduced. With this laser as local oscillator, a calibrated optical spectrometer was realized, which allows the determination of the wavelength of all transmitters of a wavelet division multiplexing (WDM) system in one sweep. The system is based on a fiber ring laser including a high finesse Fabry-Perot resonator with a high free spectral range and a 1-km-long dispersion shifted fiber. To achieve a high wavelength determination accuracy two auxiliary signals are generated: one with a Krypton filled absorption tube and another with a simple, silica based, periodical filter. With that, the wavelength of every transmitter of a WDM signal can be determined with an absolute frequency accuracy of better than /spl plusmn/0.8 GHz in a range of 1527-1562 nm in one sweep. The relative frequency accuracy is better than /spl plusmn/0.3 GHz.

Abstract

A concept is proposed for a pico-cellular network for broad-band mobile communication on a millimeter-wave basis. How microwave optical-signal-processing techniques based on mode-locked lasers (MLLs), optical modulators, and high-speed photo diodes (PD's) can advantageously be applied in the optical feeder lines of a pico-cellular network at 60 GHz is investigated. The external cavity MLL (at 81.25 GHz) used for the experiments showed a single-sideband (SSB) phase noise of -59 dBc/Hz at 100-Hz offset, when actively locked at 6.25 GHz. With the PD, and limited by the V-band mixer equipment, spectral harmonics up to 100 GHz could be detected. For the downlink configuration, a 400-MHz subcarrier is modulated with a 155-Mb/s data signal and upconverted to 62.9 GHz using an MLL and a fast PD. The upconverted sideband at 62.9 GHz was received with an optical power of -14.3-dBm at a bit-error-rate (BER) equal to 10/sup -9/ without any additional penalty due to transmitting the signal over 3 km of optical fiber. BER measurements at 155 Mb/s down to 10/sup -11/ were made. For the uplink, the digitally encoded RF signal is downconverted also by optical microwave signal processing. A 155-Mb/s data encoded 19.21-GHz signal is downconverted to 460 MHz using a mode-locked laser, an optical modulator, and a 600-MHz optical receiver front end. A receiver sensitivity of -24.5 dBm (BER equal to 10/sup -9/) is demonstrated with the microwave signal being transmitted over a 1-m radio link and 3 km of optical fiber.

Abstract

The exclusive production of proton-antiproton pairs in the collisions of two quasi-real photons has been studied using data taken at rootS(ee) = 183 GeV and 189 GeV with the OPAL detector at LEP. Results are presented for p (p) over bar invariant masses, W, in the range 2.15 < W < 3.95 GeV. The cross-section measurements are compared with previous data and with recent analytic calculations based on the quark-diquark model.

Abstract

Summary Reasons for performing study Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors improve survival and quality of life in human patients and small animals with cardiovascular and renal disease. There is limited information regarding their effects in horses. Objectives The purpose of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics of quinapril and its effects on ACE and renin in horses. Study design Experimental study using healthy mature horses. Methods Six healthy horses were administered quinapril at 120 mg i.v., 120 mg per os and 240 mg per os in a 3-way crossover design. Blood was collected for measurement of quinapril and quinaprilat concentrations using ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. Angiotensin converting enzyme activity and renin activity were measured using a radioenzymatic assay. Noncompartmental pharmacokinetic modelling and statistical analyses were performed. Results No adverse effects were observed during the study period. Intravenous and oral administration significantly inhibited ACE activity. Renin concentrations increased in all groups, but this increase was not statistically significant. Following i.v. administration of quinapril, mean terminal half-life was 0.694 h and 1.734 h for quinapril and quinaprilat, respectively. The mean volume of distribution and clearance for quinapril were 0.242 l/kg bwt and 11.93 ml/kg bwt/min, respectively. Maximum concentration for quinaprilat was 145 ng/ml at 0.167 h. Abstract

A frequency control scheme is introduced where within each transmitter its frequency is referenced to a silica based optical frequency discriminator, which in addition is locked to an absolute reference frequency. An absolute stability of /spl plusmn/1 GHz was achieved. As frequency-determining elements, coupler-based Michelson interferometers or coated gradient-index (GRIN) lenses were used. The described set-up is employed in an OFDM based optical crossconnect-demonstrator (RACE 2065; COBRA).

Abstract

Searches for a scalar top quark and a scalar bottom quark have been performed using a data sample of 438 pb-1 at centre-of-mass energies of sqrt(s) = 192 - 209 GeV collected with the OPAL detector at LEP. No evidence for a signal was found. The 95% confidence level lower limit on the scalar top quark mass is 97.6 GeV if the mixing angle between the supersymmetric partners of the left- and right-handed states of the top quark is zero. When the scalar top quark decouples from the Z0 boson, the lower limit is 95.7 GeV. These limits were obtained assuming that the scalar top quark decays into a charm quark and the lightest neutralino, and that the mass difference between the scalar top quark and the lightest neutralino is larger than 10 GeV. The complementary decay mode of the scalar top quark decaying into a bottom quark, a charged lepton and a scalar neutrino has also been studied. The lower limit on the scalar top quark mass is 93.0 GeV for this decay mode, if the mass difference between the scalar top quark and the scalar neutrino is greater than 10 GeV and if the mixing angle of the scalar top quark is zero. From a search for the scalar bottom quark, a mass limit of 96.6 GeV was obtained if the mass difference between the scalar bottom quark and the lightest neutralino is larger than 10 GeV., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Charged particle momentum distributions are studied in the reaction e+e- -> hadrons, using data collected with the OPAL detector at centre-of-mass energies from 192 GeV to 209 GeV. The data correspond to an average centre-of- mass energy of 201.7 GeV and a total integrated luminosity of 433 pb-1. The measured distributions and derived quantities, in combination with corresponding results obtained at lower centre-of-mass energies, are compared to QCD predictions in various theoretical approaches to study the energy dependence of the strong interaction and to test QCD as the theory describing it. In general, a good agreement is found between the measurements and the corresponding QCD predictions., 31 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Using a commercially available computer controlled spectrum analyser with tracking generator, optical input section, and optical delay line it is possible to measure the linewidth, linewidth enhancement factor /spl alpha/, and FM and AM response of a semiconductor laser in one process. The determination of the linewidth yields also information about the frequency noise density and the determination of a delivers information about the nonlinear gain. Assuming an optical input power of 0 dBm, a laser linewidth 0.01% and FM deviations of about >10 MHz up to 20 GHz can be detected. >

Abstract

The reconstruction of photons in the ATLAS detector is studied with data taken during the 2004 Combined Test Beam, where a full slice of the ATLAS detector was exposed to beams of particles of known energy at the CERN SPS. The results presented show significant differences in the longitudinal development of the electromagnetic shower between converted and unconverted photons as well as in the total measured energy. The potential to use the reconstructed converted photons as a means to precisely map the material of the tracker in front of the electromagnetic calorimeter is also considered. All results obtained are compared with a detailed Monte-Carlo simulation of the test-beam setup which is based on the same simulation and reconstruction tools as those used for the ATLAS detector itself., info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Abstract

Direct electric curing (DEC) of concrete is a process by which alternating electric current is passed through the bulk of freshly poured Portland cement concrete to acceleratethe curing process by means of direct ohmic heating. Electric JieM strengths, ranging approximately from 300 to 500 V/m, are required. Ris process leads to signiJicantly higher preliminary (8 hours) crushing strengths. The ultimate (28 days) strength is under suspicion, however. The Authors have investighted the influence of the maximum temperature reached, the energy input (kWh/m3), and the rate of energy input (kW/m3)on the preliminary and ultimate strengths of the concrete. It is concluded that the DEC technique is technically and economically viable, and warrants further development.

Abstract

In 2004 at the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) combined test beam, one slice of the ATLAS barrel detector (including an Inner Detector set-up and the Liquid Argon calorimeter) was exposed to particles from the H8 SPS beam line at CERN. It was the first occasion to test the combined electron performance of ATLAS. This paper presents results obtained for the momentum measurement p with the Inner Detector and for the performance of the electron measurement with the LAr calorimeter (energy E linearity and resolution) in the presence of a magnetic field in the Inner Detector for momenta ranging from 20 GeV/c to 100 GeV/c. Furthermore the particle identification capabilities of the Transition Radiation Tracker, Bremsstrahlungs-recovery algorithms relying on the LAr calorimeter and results obtained for the E/p ratio and a way how to extract scale parameters will be discussed., info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Abstract

It is pointed out that two different mechanisms are effective for the burn-through process of GIS (gas insulated substation) encapsulation by an internal arc during an in-service fault: the material erosion by melting and evaporation and the weakening of the material by heating. Depending on the arc motion one of these mechanisms may be dominant. Hitherto inexplicable motions of the arc are explained; especially the arc rotation at a spacer and the axial motion in case of symmetrical current feeding. These considerations are confirmed by experimental results and experience from industry, and they result in some recommendations for the design and the protection concept. >
