3. Effect of paddy straw based complete rations with different levels of neutral detergent fibre on microbial protein synthesis in dairy cows during early and mid lactation

Abstract

A study was conducted in 18 lactating dairy cows (mean milk yield 10 kg/day) for 6 months by feeding paddy straw based complete rations containing different levels of NDF, in two phases, viz. early and mid lactation, to assess the microbial protein synthesis using purine derivatives (PD) excreted in urine. Isonitrogenous and isocaloric complete rations; T1, T2 and T3 with 25, 30 and 35 per cent NDF, respectively were formulated as per ICAR (1998). Paddy straw was the sole source of roughage NDF and the rest of NDF met by non-forage sources, in 3 diets. PD excreted through urine were comparable between the dietary treatments, in phases 1 and 2. The microbial protein (MBP) synthesis in T1, T2 and T3 were 997.01, 825.91, 842.06 g, respectively, in phase 1 and 1127.93, 1106.74 and 1157.24 g, respectively, in phase 2. The TDN intake calculated from the values of digestibility coefficients of nutrients in T1, T2 and T3 were 5.18, 5.86, 6.10 kg in phase 1 and 8.63, 8.81, 9.00 kg, in phase 2, respectively. The efficiency of MBP production/kg of TDN was 192.47, 140.94, and 138.04 g in phase 1 and 130.70, 125.62 and 128.58 g in phase 2, respectively in T1, T2 and T3. Results suggest that complete diets with 25 per cent are the most ideal NDF level in early lactation while all three NDF levels, viz. 25, 30 and 35% are ideal in mid lactation.

Abstract

A 35-year-old female was referred to our hospital with bilateral loss of vision of two days duration. She gave history of consumption of about 150 ml of neem oil five days back.Examination revealed no perception of light in both eyes. Both pupils were dilated and sluggishly reacting to light. Her fundus examination showed bilateral hyperemic, edematous discs and also edema extending along the superior and inferior temporal vascular arcade. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan showed bilateral putaminal regions with altered signal, hypointensities in T1-weighted images, hyperintensities on T2-weighted, images and hyperintense on Fluid Attenuation Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) images suggestive of cytotoxic edema due to tissue hypoxia. Her vision improved to 20/200 in both eyes with treatment after two months. This is the first case report of such nature in the literature to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to assess the effect of supplementation of biotin on rumen fermentation parameters and microbial biomass production by in vitro gas production technique. Biotin was supplemented to the substrate - total mixed ration (TMR) at various doses viz., T1-0 (control), T2-0.5, T3-1.0, T4-1.5 and T5-2.0 mg/kg DM. The in vitro true dry matter degradability, total gas production, metabolizable energy and microbial protein production were found be increased proportionally to the dose of biotin. However, the methane and volatile fatty acid production were not affected by biotin supplementation. Results revealed that the positive effects on in vitro ruminal fermentation were dose-dependent and biotin can be incorporated in the diet of dairy cows to improve nutrient digestibility and rumen biomass production.

Abstract

The present study analysed the resource use efficiency of milk production among different types of dairy farms in Kerala. The area of study and the respondents were selected using a stratified multi-stage random sampling technique. The farmers/farm households were categorized into small farms (1-2 cows), medium (3-10 cows), and large farms (more than ten cows). The relationship between inputs and milk production has been explored through the production function approach. Resource use efficiency was essentially a comparison between the Marginal Value Product (MVP) of an input with its price that gave direction on the use of that particular input in order to maximize profit. The results showed that in small farms, the MVPs of two inputs viz. roughages and labour was significantly less than unity, signifying overutilisation of these inputs. The MVP value of concentrate was significantly higher than unity, indicating their underutilisation in the milk production process. The MVP of concentrate was positive and significantly greater than unity in medium and large farms, also indicating their underutilisation.

Background: Sorghum (Jowar), a nutritionally rich, great millet is frequently cultivated in semi-arid tracts of India but at places without considering the suitable soil-sites, which result in lower productivity. Thus, understanding of sorghum-growing pedo-environment vis-à-vis crop requirements is a pre-requisite for soil-site evaluation of crop and hence present case study was carried out in Mahabubnagar rural mandal of Mahabubnagar district, Telangana state. Methods: The detailed soil survey (1:10000 scale) of Mahabubnagar Rural mandal (Mahabubnagar district), Telangana was carried out using Sentinel 2 satellite data and mapped with 66 mapping units. These mapping units along with relevant physical and chemical properties were evaluated for their suitability for sorghum farming. Result: Our results indicated that major sorghum-growing soils of Mahabubnagar Rural mandal have been grouped as Typic Rhodustalfs, Aquic Haplustalfs, and Typic Haplusterts at the sub group level. Out of the 18-soil series, major sorghum-growing soils belong to Telugugudam, Kotakadira and Potanpalle series occupying 7.56% of the geographical area. The soil-site evaluation study indicated that the maximum area (33.99 per cent) was rated as marginally suitable with limitations of gravelliness, nutrient availability, rooting conditions, and texture while 1.51 per cent area was highly suitable for sorghum cultivation. Background: Semiarid lands possess limitations of climate such as low and erratic rainfall, long dry spell, high potential evapotranspiration and lesser length of growing period which directly influence the yield and productivity of crop along with the soil properties. Pigeon pea, being one of the most dominant pulse crops cultivated in the semiarid Deccan plateau, an understanding on the soils where pigeon pea is mainly grown and the evaluation of their land suitability was found to be essential. Methods: Land resource inventory at 1:10,000 scale was carried out in Mahabubnagar Rural mandal, Mahabubnagar district, Telangana state of South Deccan plateau to characterize the major pigeon pea growing soils and their land suitability evaluation. Result: When the entire study area was evaluated for its suitability, majority of the area (32.79%) was marginally suitable, followed by moderately suitable area (16.24%) with moderate to severe limitations of nutrient availability, rooting conditions, gravelliness and texture and a very small area of 5.55 per cent was found to be highly suitable towards the crop. Out of the 18 soil series identified, only five were the major pigeon pea soils which were mostly marginally suitable (S3) with limitations of nutrient availability, slope, effective root depth and texture. Though the climatic characteristics of the area were highly favourable to the crop classified under the highly suitable class (S1), rooting conditions, nutrient availability and slope were the major limitations towards the cultivation and productivity of pigeon pea. Abstract

Evaluating soil quality in the alluvial plains of the semi-arid tropics is vital to understand the impact of existing land management practices, thus facilitating the adoption of more sustainable agricultural methods. We analysed soil profiles using 146 horizon-specific samples from 24 pedons, representing seven soil series from the sub-tropical to semi-arid River Cauvery Delta basin, Tamil Nadu, India. Using principal component analysis (PCA), we identified minimum datasets (MDS) from 30 different soil properties. The plough layer's MDS were clay content, exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), very coarse sand content, soil pH and soil organic carbon (SOC). For the subsurface layer, sand content, ESP, SOC, diethylene-triamine-pentaacetic acid extractable zinc (DTPA-Zn), and very coarse sand content were identified as the MDS. Soil quality index (SQI) values were 0.47-0.72 for the plough layer and 0.46-0.56 for the subsurface soil, suggesting limited soil function support in subsurface soils. Surface soil-site suitability criteria displayed a moderate correlation with SQI values derived via PCA, with additive (R2 = .545) and weighted additive indices (R2 = .659). Both simple additive index and weighted derived SQIs demonstrated a moderate association with rice yield (R2 = .50 and .55, respectively). Abstract

The detailed reconnaissance soil survey was carried out in Tumkur district of Karnataka to characterize, classify and study organic carbon stocks of degradation vulnerable soils during 2021-2023 using remote sensing, GIS and field studies. Satellite imageries (Sentinal -2) of three-seasons were used along with soil map to delineate the degraded soils through visual image interpretation. Using this as base map, resource characterization was done. Thirteen soil pedons were studied from Tumkur district covering major soils. Four representative pedons (Kurubarahalli, Koratagere; Huliyurdurga, Kunigal; Chinnenahalli, Sira and Hosahalli forest, Gubbi) to study characterization and classification of soils of Tumkur district, Karnataka based on organic carbon. The granite, gneissic and schistose landform, with dykes and laterized parent material give rise to well, somewhat excessive or moderately well drained soils. The soils were generally deep, non-gravelly to very gravelly with sandy clay loam to clayey texture. Moderately acid to moderately alkaline Specify with low to high organic carbon content were observed. CEC/clay ratio ranged from 0.14 to 0.70 and base saturation varied from 46.31 to 79.98 per cent. The available water holding capacity ranged from 42.84 to 77.55 mm m-1 with highest organic carbon stock in Hosahalli forest of Gubbi (9.82 kg m-3) and the least in Kurubarahalli village of Koratagere (1.93 kg m-3) upto 150 cm. The major taxa of the soil identified at sub-group level of soil taxonomy were Rhodic Kanhaplustalfs, Typic Rhodustalfs, Rhodic Kandiustalfs and Fluventic Haplustepts. Use of remote sensing and GIS techniques along with field studies is ideal for assessing land qualities of Tumkur district. This can help in identifying and encountering problems created by land degradation processes over a period of time along with exposure to adverse climatic conditions, land management and other anthropogenic interventions for ensuring sustainable management of land with enhanced productivity. Abstract

In this present study, a Friction stir weld (FSW) technique is applied to fabricate the FSW joints of aluminium alloy plates of 2024-T351 and 7075-T651 in butt-joint arrangement using a FSW tool of shape taper threaded cylindrical (TTC). The FSW joints are produced using constant FSW parameters of tool rotation speed (TRS) of 650 rpm, tool traverse speed (TTS) of 150 mm/min and tool plunge depth (TPD) of 6.20 mm. Tensile and microstructure specimens are removed from the weld joint in the direction perpendicular to the tool traverse and across the weld region. Initially, each of these specimens are heat treated to solution temperature (400, 420, 440, 460, 480, 500 °C) for 1 h and tested for tensile properties. The heat-treated microstructure samples are examined for the presence of abnormal grain growth (AGG) in the weld nugget zone (WNZ), thermally affected zone (TMAZ), heat affected zone (HAZ) of the weld region using stereo-zoom microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Microstructure specimens subjected to solution heat treatment up to 480 °C are stable and reveals no AGG. However, for 500 °C the microstructures are not stable and the presence of AGG in the weld regions are observed. At 480 °C, the tested specimen shows homogeneity in hardness distribution across the weld regions. Thus, solution temperature of 480 °C is chosen as an optimizing solution temperature. Further, the tensile specimens are subjected to ageing temperature with constant temperature of 180 °C for various durations range 5, 8 and 12 h. Thus, these experimental investigations indicate that the specimen subjected to solution treatment at 480 °C followed by ageing temperature of 180 °C for 12 h show higher ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 435 MPa and percentage increase of 6.8% compared to the specimens without heat treatment having UTS of 407 MPa.

37. Effect of feeding concentrate mixtures containing varying levels of dried moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaves on haematobiochemical and sex hormonal parameters in Murrah buffalo heifers

A feeding trial was conducted for a period of 120 days for studying the haemato-biochemical and sex hormonal parameters in buffalo heifers fed with concentrate mixtures containing varying levels of dried moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaves. Fifteen Murrah buffalo heifers aged 18-26 months were selected and randomly allotted to three groups of five animals each and fed three dietary treatments, containing concentrate mixture (20 per cent CP and 68 per cent TDN) and ad libitum green grass. Dried moringa leaves were incorporated at 0, 10 and 20 per cent in the concentrate mixture for treatments T1 (control), T2 and T3 respectively. Abstract

The climate change and land degradation are both individually and in combination have profound influence on natural resource based livelihood systems and societal groups, but this land degradation is caused by land use changes and unsustainable management. The different land use systems practiced in southern agro-climatic zones of Karnataka have significant impact on soil carbon and fertility status of soils, a study was carried out to characterize and classify the soils of southern agro-climatic zones of Karnataka. Five pedons, one from each agro-climatic zone from cultivated land use were selected for the study. Soils of Hiriyur pedons were moderately shallow and rest were deep to very deep, red, well drained and appreciable amount of gravels were observed in all the pedons. Clay illuviation in sub-soil layers was observed hence sub-soil layer contained more clay than surface. The soil texture varied from sandy clay loam to sandy clay and clay. Bulk density of soil varied from 0.86 to 1.86 Mgm-3 in the surface. In all the profiles, bulk density increased with depth. Soil reaction varied from very strongly acidic to moderately acidic in Balehonnur and Brahmavara, moderately acidic to neutral in Hassan and Tiptur, neutral to moderately alkaline in Hiriyur. Cation exchange capacity was low and exchange complex was dominated by hydrogen and aluminum. Dominant cations were calcium and magnesium hence base saturation was high in the pedons due to leaching of bases and deposition in sub-surface horizons within the solum except in Brahmvara and Balehonnur was observed.
