First-principles calculations are presented for fundamental vibrational splitting energies of tritium-bearing molecular hydrogen species with the improved treatment of the nonrelativistic, relativistic, and quantum electrodynamic energy contributions resulting in a total uncertainty of 0.00011 cm^{−1} for DT, or about a 100-times improvement over previous results. We present a method for calculating the relativistic correction in hydrogen molecules that significantly exceeds the accuracy of all the previous literature results. This method utilizes the explicitly correlated nonadiabatic exponential wave function, and thus treats electrons and nuclei equivalently. The proposed method can be applied to any rovibrational state, including highly excited ones. The numerical precision of the relativistic correction reaches several kHz (∼10 -7 cm -1 ), which is below the best experimental accuracy.

We present a calculation of the hyperfine splitting of the 2^{3}S state in the ^{3}He atom with inclusion of all QED effects up to α^{3}E_{F}, where E_{F} is the Fermi splitting. Using the experimental value of the 1S hyperfine splitting in ^{3}He^{+}, we eliminate uncertainties from the nuclear structure and obtain the theoretical prediction for ^{3}He of ν_{hfs}=-6 739 701 181(41)  Hz, which is in perfect agreement with the experimental value -6 739 701 177(16)  Hz [S. D. Rosner and F. M. Pipkin, Phys. Rev. A 1, 571 (1970)PLRAAN0556-279110.1103/PhysRevA.1.571]. This result constitutes a 40-fold improvement in precision as compared to the previous value and is the most accurate theoretical prediction ever obtained for a nonhydrogenic system.

We investigate the modification of the transverse electromagnetic interaction between two pointlike particles when one particle acquires a finite size. It is shown that the correct treatment of such interaction cannot be accomplished within the Breit approximation but should be addressed within the QED. The complete QED formula is derived for the finite-size nuclear recoil, exact in the coupling strength parameter Zα. Numerical calculations are carried out for a wide range of Z and verified against the (Zα)^{5} contribution. The comparison with the Zα expansion identifies the contribution of order (Zα)^{6}, which is linear in the nuclear radius and numerically dominates over the lower-order (Zα)^{5} term.

The leading quantum electrodynamic corrections to the nuclear magnetic shielding in one- and two-electron atomic systems are obtained in a complete form, and the shielding constants of ^{1}H, ^{3}He^{+}, and ^{3}He are calculated to be 17.735 436(3)×10^{-6}, 35.507 434(9)×10^{-6}, and 59.967 029(23)×10^{-6}, respectively. These results are orders of magnitude more accurate than previous ones, and, with the ongoing measurement of the nuclear magnetic moment of ^{3}He^{+} and planned ^{3}He^{2+}, they open the window for high-precision absolute magnetometry using ^{3}He NMR probes. The presented theoretical approach is applicable to all other light atomic and molecular systems, which facilitates the improved determination of magnetic moments of any light nuclei.

We perform the four-body calculation of the hyperfine structure in the first rotational state J=1 of the H_{2}, D_{2}, and HD molecules and determine the accurate value for the deuteron electric quadrupole moment Q_{d}=0.285 699(15)(18)  fm^{2} in significant disagreement with former spectroscopic determinations. Our results for the hyperfine parameters agree very well with the currently most accurate molecular-beam magnetic resonance measurement performed several decades ago by N.F. Ramsey and coworkers. They also indicate the significance of previously neglected nonadiabatic effects. Moreover, a very good agreement with the recent calculation of Q_{d} based on the chiral effective field theory, although much less accurate, indicates the importance of the spin dependence of nucleon interactions in the accurate description of nuclei.

The exchange energy, i.e., the splitting ΔE between gerade and ungerade states in the hydrogen molecule, has proven very difficult in numerical calculation at large internuclear distances R, while the known results are sparse and highly inaccurate. On the other hand, there are conflicting analytical results in the literature concerning its asymptotics. In this work, we develop a flexible and efficient numerical approach using explicitly correlated exponential functions and demonstrate highly accurate exchange energies for internuclear distances as large as 57.5 a.u. This approach may find further applications in calculations of inter-atomic interactions. In particular, our results support the asymptotics form ΔE ∼ R 5/2 e -2R , but with the leading coefficient being 2σ away from the analytically derived value.

Nonrelativistic energies of the deuterium molecule, accurate to 10-7-10-8 cm-1 for all levels located up to 8000 cm-1 above the ground state, are presented. The employed nonadiabatic James-Coolidge wave functions with angular factors enable the high accuracy to be reached regardless of vibrational or rotational quantum number. The derivative of the energy with respect to the deuteron-to-electron mass ratio is supplied for each level, which makes the results independent of the future changes in this physical parameter and will enable its determination from sufficiently accurate experimental data.

The first laser spectroscopic determination of the change in the nuclear charge radius for a five-electron system is reported. This is achieved by combining high-accuracy ab initio mass-shift calculations and a high-accuracy measurement of the isotope shift in the 2s^{2}2p  ^{2}P_{1/2}→2s^{2}3s  ^{2}S_{1/2} ground state transition in boron atoms. Accuracy is increased by orders of magnitude for the stable isotopes ^{10,11}B and the results are used to extract their difference in the mean-square charge radius ⟨r_{c}^{2}⟩^{11}-⟨r_{c}^{2}⟩^{10}=-0.49(12)  fm^{2}. The result is qualitatively explained by a possible cluster structure of the boron nuclei and quantitatively used to benchmark new ab initio nuclear structure calculations using the no-core shell model and Green's function Monte Carlo approaches. These results are the foundation for a laser spectroscopic determination of the charge radius of the proton-halo candidate ^{8}B.

The quantum electrodynamic correction to the energy of the hydrogen molecule has been evaluated without expansion in the electron-proton mass ratio. The obtained results significantly improve the accuracy of theoretical predictions reaching the level of 1 MHz for the dissociation energy, in very good agreement with the parallel measurement [Hölsch et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 103002 (2019)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.122.103002]. Molecular hydrogen has thus become a cornerstone of ultraprecise quantum chemistry, which opens perspectives for determination of fundamental physical constants from its spectra.

Nonadiabatic exponential functions are employed to solve the four-body Schrödinger equation. Nonrelativistic bound energy levels of the HD molecule are calculated to the relative accuracy of 10 -12 -10 -13 , which is the first step toward highly accurate prediction of dissociation and transition energies. Such energies, in connection with equally accurate experimental data, will enable refinement of the physical constant and aid the search for deviations caused by yet unknown interactions at the atomic scale.

The relativistic correction to the dissociation energy of H_{2}, D_{2}, and HD molecules has been accurately calculated without expansion in the small electron-nucleus mass ratio. The obtained results indicate the significance of nonadiabatic effects and resolve the discrepancy of theoretical predictions with recent experimental values for H_{2} and D_{2}. While the theoretical accuracy is now significantly improved and is higher than the experimental one, we observe about 3σ discrepancy for the dissociation energy of HD, which requires further investigation.

Precision spectroscopy of the hydrogen molecule is a test ground of quantum electrodynamics (QED), and it may serve for the determination of fundamental constants. Using a comb-locked cavity ring-down spectrometer, for the first time, we observed the Lamb-dip spectrum of the R(1) line in the overtone of hydrogen deuteride (HD). The line position was determined to be 217 105 182.79±0.03_{stat}±0.08_{syst}  MHz (δν/ν=4×10^{-10}), which is the most accurate rovibrational transition ever measured in the ground electronic state of molecular hydrogen. Moreover, from calculations including QED effects up to the order m_{e}α^{6}, we obtained predictions for this R(1) line as well as for the HD dissociation energy, which are less accurate but signaling the importance of the complete treatment of nonadiabatic effects. Provided that the theoretical calculation reaches the same accuracy, the present measurement will lead to a determination of the proton-to-electron mass ratio with a precision of 1.3 parts per billion.

The interaction between nuclear spins in a molecule is exceptionally sensitive to the physics beyond the standard model. However, all present calculations of the nuclear spin-spin coupling constant J are burdened by computational difficulties, which hinders the comparison to experimental results. Here, we present a variational approach and calculate the constant J in the hydrogen molecule with the controlled numerical precision, using the adiabatic approximation. The apparent discrepancy with experimental result is removed by an analysis of nonadiabatic effects based on the experimental values of the J constant for HD, HT, and DT molecules. This study significantly improves the reliability of the NMR theory for searching new physics in the spin-spin coupling.

The 2 ^{3}S-2 ^{3}P transition of ^{4}He was measured by comb-linked laser spectroscopy using a transverse-cooled atomic beam. The centroid frequency was determined to be 276 736 495 600.0(1.4) kHz, with a fractional uncertainty of 5.1×10^{-12}. This value is not only more accurate but also differs by as much as -49.5  kHz (20σ) from the previous result given by [Cancio Pastor et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 023001 (2004)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.92.023001; Cancio Pastor et al.Phys. Rev. Lett.97, 139903(E) (2006)10.1103/PhysRevLett.97.139903; Cancio Pastor et al.Phys. Rev. Lett.108, 143001 (2012)10.1103/PhysRevLett.108.143001]. In combination with ongoing theoretical calculations, this work may allow the most accurate determination of the nuclear charge radius of helium.

We present a new computational method for the determination of energy levels in four-particle systems like H 2 , HD, and HeH + using explicitly correlated exponential basis functions and analytic integration formulas. In solving the Schrödinger equation, no adiabatic separation of the nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom is introduced. We provide formulas for the coupling between the rotational and electronic angular momenta, which enable calculations of arbitrary rotationally excited energy levels. To illustrate the high numerical efficiency of the method, we present the results for various states of the hydrogen molecule. The relative accuracy to which we determined the nonrelativistic energy reached the level of 10 -12 -10 -13 , which corresponds to an uncertainty of 10 -7 -10 -8 cm -1 .

The fine-structure splitting in the 2^{3}P_{J} (J=0, 1, 2) levels of ^{4}He is of great interest for tests of quantum electrodynamics and for the determination of the fine-structure constant α. The 2^{3}P_{0}-2^{3}P_{2} and 2^{3}P_{1}-2^{3}P_{2} intervals are measured by laser spectroscopy of the ^{3}P_{J}-2^{3}S_{1} transitions at 1083 nm in an atomic beam, and are determined to be 31 908 130.98±0.13  kHz and 2 291 177.56±0.19  kHz, respectively. Compared with calculations, which include terms up to α^{5}Ry, the deviation for the α-sensitive interval 2^{3}P_{0}-2^{3}P_{2} is only 0.22 kHz. It opens the window for further improvement of theoretical predictions and an independent determination of the fine-structure constant α with a precision of 2×10^{-9}.

We perform the calculation of all relativistic and quantum electrodynamic corrections of the order of α^{6} m to the ground electronic state of a hydrogen molecule and present improved results for the dissociation and the fundamental transition energies. These results open the window for the high-precision spectroscopy of H_{2} and related low-energy tests of fundamental interactions.

The hydrogen molecule can be used for determination of physical constants, including the proton charge radius, and for improved tests of the hypothetical long range force between hadrons, which require a sufficiently accurate knowledge of the molecular levels. In this work, we perform the first step toward a significant improvement in theoretical predictions of H2 and solve the nonrelativistic Schrödinger equation to the unprecedented accuracy of 10(-12). We hope that it will inspire a parallel progress in the spectroscopy of the molecular hydrogen.

An efficient computational approach to nonadiabatic effects in the hydrogen molecule (H2, D2, and T2) is presented. The electronic wave function is expanded in the James-Coolidge basis set, which enables obtaining a very high accuracy of nonadiabatic potentials. A single point convergence of the potentials with growing size of the basis set reveals a relative accuracy ranging from 10(-8) to 10(-13). An estimated accuracy of the leading nonadiabatic correction to the rovibrational energy levels is of the order of 10(-7) cm(-1). After a significant increase in the accuracy of the Born-Oppenheimer and adiabatic calculations, the nonadiabatic results presented in this report constitute another step towards highly accurate theoretical description of the hydrogen molecule.

Absolute transition frequencies of the 2s 2S{1/2}→2p2P{1/2,3/2} transitions in Be^{+} were measured for the isotopes ^{7,9-12}Be. The fine structure splitting of the 2p state and its isotope dependence are extracted and compared to results of ab initio calculations using explicitly correlated basis functions, including relativistic and quantum electrodynamics effects at the order of mα(6) and mα(7) ⁢ln α. Accuracy has been improved in both the theory and experiment by 2 orders of magnitude, and good agreement is observed. This represents one of the most accurate tests of quantum electrodynamics for many-electron systems, being insensitive to nuclear uncertainties.

Phenomenologically important quantum dissipative processes include blackbody friction (an atom absorbs counterpropagating blueshifted photons and spontaneously emits them in all directions, losing kinetic energy) and noncontact van der Waals friction (in the vicinity of a dielectric surface, the mirror charges of the constituent particles inside the surface experience drag, slowing the atom). The theoretical predictions for these processes are modified upon a rigorous quantum electrodynamic treatment, which shows that the one-loop "correction" yields the dominant contribution to the off-resonant, gauge-invariant, imaginary part of the atom's polarizability at room temperature, for typical atom-surface interactions. The tree-level contribution to the polarizability dominates at high temperature.

A new formalism for the accurate treatment of adiabatic effects in the hydrogen molecule is presented, in which the electronic wave function is expanded in the James-Coolidge basis functions. Systematic increase in the size of the basis set permits estimation of the accuracy. Numerical results for the adiabatic correction to the Born-Oppenheimer interaction energy reveal a relative precision of 10(-12) at an arbitrary internuclear distance. Such calculations have been performed for 88 internuclear distances in the range of 0 < R ⩽ 12 bohrs to construct the adiabatic correction potential and to solve the nuclear Schrödinger equation. Finally, the adiabatic correction to the dissociation energies of all rovibrational levels in H2, HD, HT, D2, DT, and T2 has been determined. For the ground state of H2 the estimated precision is 3 × 10(-7) cm(-1), which is almost three orders of magnitude higher than that of the best previous result. The achieved accuracy removes the adiabatic contribution from the overall error budget of the present day theoretical predictions for the rovibrational levels.

We consider quantum electrodynamics (QED) corrections to the fine splitting E(2P&#95;{3/2})-E(2P&#95;{1/2}) in the Li atom. We derive complete formulas for the mα^{6} and mα^{7}lnα contributions and calculate them numerically using highly optimized, explicitly correlated basis functions. The obtained results are in agreement with the most recent measurement, helping to resolve discrepancies between former ones and lay the foundation for the investigation of QED effects in light, many-electron atoms.

Relativistic and QED corrections are calculated for a hyperfine splitting of the 2S1/2 ground state in 6,7Li atoms with a numerically exact account for electronic correlations. The resulting theoretical predictions achieve such a precision level that, by comparison with experimental values, they enable determination of the nuclear properties. In particular, the obtained results show that the 7Li nucleus, having a charge radius smaller than 6Li, has about a 40% larger Zemach radius. Together with known differences in the electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments, this calls for a deeper understanding of the Li nuclear structure.

The fundamental ground tone vibration of H(2), HD, and D(2) is determined to an accuracy of 2×10(-4) cm(-1) from Doppler-free laser spectroscopy in the collisionless environment of a molecular beam. This rotationless vibrational splitting is derived from the combination difference between electronic excitation from the X(1)Σ(g)(+), v=0, and v=1 levels to a common EF(1)Σ(g)(+), v=0 level. Agreement within 1σ between the experimental result and a full ab initio calculation provides a stringent test of quantum electrodynamics in a chemically bound system.

Dissociation energy (D(0)) of rovibrational levels of (4)HeH(+) has been predicted theoretically to the accuracy of the order of 0.01 cm(-1). The calculations take into account adiabatic and nonadiabatic corrections as well as relativistic and quantum electrodynamics effects. For the ground rovibrational level D(0) = 14,874.215(10) cm(-1) and it differs by several tens of the inverse centimeter from previous theoretical estimations. For a collection of about 50 transition energies measured between dipole connected levels the difference between theory and experiment is of the order of hundredths of cm(-1) or less.

Eleven very weak electric quadrupole transitions Q(2), Q(1), S(0)-S(8) of the first overtone band of D(2) have been measured by very high sensitivity CW-cavity ring down spectroscopy (CRDS) between 5850 and 6720 cm(-1). The noise equivalent absorption of the recordings is on the order of α(min) ≈ 3 × 10(-11) cm(-1). By averaging a high number of spectra, the noise level was lowered to α(min) ≈ 4 × 10(-12) cm(-1) in order to detect the S(8) transition which is among the weakest transitions ever detected in laboratory experiments (line intensity on the order of 1.8 × 10(-31) cm/molecule at 296 K). A Galatry profile was used to reproduce the measured line shape and derive the line strengths. The pressure shift and position at zero pressure limit were determined from recordings with pressures ranging between 10 and 750 Torr. A highly accurate theoretical line list was constructed for pure D(2) at 296 K. The intensity threshold was fixed to a value of 1 × 10(-34) cm/molecule at 296 K. The obtained line list is provided as supplementary material. It extends up to 24,000 cm(-1) and includes 201 transitions belonging to ten v-0 cold bands (v = 0-9) and three v-1 hot bands (v = 1-3). The energy levels include the relativistic and quantum electrodynamic corrections as well as the effects of the finite nuclear mass. The quadrupole transition moments are calculated using highly accurate adiabatic wave functions. The CRDS line positions and intensities of the first overtone band are compared to the corresponding calculated values and to previous measurements of the S(0)-S(3) lines. The agreement between the CRDS and theoretical results is found within the claimed experimental uncertainties (on the order of 1 × 10(-3) cm(-1) and 2% for the positions and intensities, respectively) while the previous S(0)-S(3) measurements showed important deviations for the line intensities.

We measure the absolute frequency of seven out of the nine allowed transitions between the 2 (3)S and 2 (3)P hyperfine manifolds in a metastable (3)He beam by using an optical frequency comb synthesizer-assisted spectrometer. The relative uncertainty of our measurements ranges from 1×10(-11) to 5×10(-12), which is, to our knowledge, the most precise result for any optical ^{3}He transition to date. The resulting 2 (3)P-2 (3)S centroid frequency is 276,702,827,204.8(2.4) kHz. Comparing this value with the known result for the (4)He centroid and performing ab initio QED calculations of the (4)He-(3)He isotope shift, we extract the difference of the squared nuclear charge radii δr(2) of (3)He and (4)He. Our result for δr(2)=1.074(3) fm(2) disagrees by about 4σ with the recent determination [R. van Rooij et al., Science 333, 196 (2011)]., (© 2012 American Physical Society)

Five very weak transitions-O(2), O(3), O(4), O(5) and Q(5)-of the first overtone band of H(2) are measured by very high sensitivity CW-Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) between 6900 and 7920 cm(-1). The noise equivalent absorption of the recordings is on the order of α(min)≈ 5 × 10(-11) cm(-1) allowing for the detection of the O(5) transition with an intensity of 1.1 × 10(-30) cm per molecule, the smallest intensity value measured so far for an H(2) absorption line. A Galatry profile was used to reproduce the measured line shape and derive the line strengths. The pressure shift of the O(2) and O(3) lines was accurately determined from a series of recordings with pressure ranging between 10 and 700 Torr. From an exhaustive review of the literature data, the list of H(2) absorption lines detected so far has been constructed. It includes a total of 39 transitions ranging from the S(0) pure rotational line near 354 cm(-1) up to the S(1) transition of the (5-0) band near 18,908 cm(-1). These experimental values are compared to a highly accurate theoretical line list constructed for pure H(2) at 296 K (0-35,000 cm(-1), intensity cut off of 1 × 10(-34) cm per molecule). The energy levels and transition moments were computed from high level quantum mechanics calculations. The overall agreement between the theoretical and experimental values is found to be very good for the line positions. Some deviations for the intensities of the high overtone bands (V > 2) are discussed in relation with possible pressure effects affecting the retrieved intensity values. We conclude that the hydrogen molecule is probably a unique case in rovibrational spectroscopy for which first principles theory can provide accurate spectroscopic parameters at the level of the performances of the state of the art experimental techniques.

The dissociation energies from all rovibrational levels of H2 and D2 in the ground electronic state are calculated with high accuracy by including relativistic and quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects in the nonadiabatic treatment of the nuclear motion. For D2, the obtained energies have theoretical uncertainties of 0.001 cm(-1). For H2, similar uncertainties are for the lowest levels, while for the higher ones the uncertainty increases to 0.005 cm(-1). Very good agreement with recent high-resolution measurements of the rotational v = 0 levels of H2, including states with large angular momentum J, is achieved. This agreement would not have been possible without accurate evaluation of the relativistic and QED contributions and may be viewed as the first observation of the QED effects, mainly the electron self-energy, in a molecular spectrum. For several electric quadrupole transitions, we still observe certain disagreement with experimental results, which remains to be explained.

The shielding of the nuclear magnetic moment by the bound electron in hydrogenlike ions is calculated ab initio with inclusion of relativistic, nuclear, and quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects. The QED correction is evaluated to all orders in the nuclear binding strength parameter and, independently, to the first order in the expansion in this parameter. The results obtained lay the basis for the high-precision determination of nuclear magnetic dipole moments from measurements of the g factor of hydrogenlike ions.

The muonic hydrogen experiment measuring the 2P-2S transition energy [R. Pohl et al., Nature (London) 466, 213 (2010)] is significantly discrepant with theoretical predictions based on quantum electrodynamics. A possible approach to resolve this conundrum is to compare experimental values with theoretical predictions in another system, muonic deuterium μD. The only correction which might be questioned in μD is that due to the deuteron polarizability. We investigate this effect in detail and observe cancellation with the elastic contribution. The total value obtained for the deuteron structure correction in the 2P-2S transition is 1.680(16) meV.
