Measurements of the cross sections are conducted for coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the d, gamma deutron to pi0 eta deutron, at the incident energy in the range of the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. A rapidly increasing trend below 1 GeV is observed in the total cross section. The data are effectively reproduced by theoretical calculations incorporating the meson-deutron final-state interactions. However, the measured deutron angular distribution d sigma/d Omegad in the center-of-mass frame (gamma d) is rather flat, and it differs significantly from the strong backward-peaking behavior expected in the kinematics of d formation after pi0 eta photoproduction on an initial bound nucleon. In addition, the d sigma/dMeta d differential cross section exhibits a prominent enhancement near the eta d threshold, while d sigma/dMpi d exhibits an enhancement near the known pi d resonance with I=1 and JP=2+. From these observations, we have concluded that two reaction sequences occur; gamma d to pi0 D01 to pi0 eta d and eta D12 to pi0 eta d, where DIJ denotes a state with a baryon number of 2, an isospin of I, and a spin of J. The enhancement corresponding to D01 is expected to be a theoretically predicted eta NN bound state with I=0 and JP=1- or a virtual state of eta d. It is found that attraction between eta d is certainly very strong.

Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\eta{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $\pi^0 \eta$ photoproduction on the nucleon followed by deuteron coalescence. At the same time, the data are rather well reproduced by the calculations taking into account the final-state interaction. We have also measured for the first time the differential cross sections: the $\pi^0 \eta$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi \eta}$, the $\pi^0 d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi d}$, the $\eta d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$, and the distribution over the deuteron emission angle $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ in the overall center-of-mass frame. The measured cross section $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ does not exhibit strongly backward-peaking behavior predicted by the calculations. At all incident energies, an increase in $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$ near the $\eta d$ threshold is observed, which indicates a bound or virtual $\eta d$ state resulting from a strong attraction between $\eta$ and a deuteron. The possibilities of using coherent $\pi^0\eta$ photoproduction on a nucleus to study the $\eta$-nuclear interaction are also discussed., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron, γ d → π 0 π 0 d , has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from 0.75 to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section as a function of the γd center-of-mass energy shows resonance-like behavior, which peaks at approximately 2.47 and 2.63 GeV. The measured angular distribution of deuteron emission is rather flat, which cannot be reproduced by the kinematics of quasi-free π 0 π 0 production with deuteron coalescence. In π 0 d invariant-mass distributions, a clear peak is observed at 2.14 ± 0.01 GeV / c 2 with a width of 0.09 ± 0.01 GeV / c 2 . The spin-parity of this state is restricted to 1 + , 2 + or 3 − from the angular distributions of the two π 0 s. The present work shows strong evidence for the existence of an isovector dibaryon resonance with a mass of 2.14 GeV / c 2 . The 2 + assignment is consistent with the theoretically predicted D 12 state, and also with the energy dependence of the πd partial-wave amplitude P 2 3 for the π ± d → π ± d and π + d → p p reactions.

This paper gives a new approach for the maximum likelihood estimation of the joint of the location and scale of the Cauchy distribution. We regard the joint as a single complex parameter and derive a new form of the likelihood equation of a complex variable. Based on the equation, we provide a new iterative scheme approximating the maximum likelihood estimate. We also handle the equation in an algebraic manner and derive a polynomial containing the maximum likelihood estimate as a root. This algebraic approach provides another scheme approximating the maximum likelihood estimate by root-finding algorithms for polynomials, and furthermore, gives non-existence of closed-form formulae for the case that the sample size is five. Photoproduction of the $\omega$ meson on the proton has been experimentally studied near the threshold. The total cross sections are determined at incident energies ranging from 1.09 to 1.15 GeV. The 1/2 and 3/2 spin-averaged scattering length $a_{\omega p}$ and effective range $r_{\omega p}$ between the $\omega$ meson and proton are estimated from the shape of the total cross section as a function of the incident photon energy: $a_{\omega p} = \left(-0.97^{+0.16_{\rm stat}}_{-0.16_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.03_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)+i \left(0.07^{+0.15_{\rm stat}}_{-0.14_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.17_{\rm syst}}_{-0.09_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm and $r_{\omega p}=\left(+2.78^{+0.68_{\rm stat}}_{-0.54_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.11_{\rm syst}}_{-0.13_{\rm syst}}\right)+i\left(-0.01^{+0.46_{\rm stat}}_{-0.50_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.07_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm, resulting in a repulsive force. The real and imaginary parts for $a_{\omega p}$ and $r_{\omega p}$ are determined separately for the first time. A small $P$-wave contribution does not affect the obtained values.

The non-strange \(B=2\) system (dibaryon) has been studied using coherent neutral-meson photoproduction from the deuteron, \(\gamma d\rightarrow \pi ^0\pi ^0d\) and \(\gamma d\rightarrow \pi ^0\eta d\), measured with the FOREST detector at the ELPH facility. A rather flat angular distribution of deuteron emission and a peak in the \(\pi ^0d\) invariant-mass distribution give evidence for the 2.15-GeV isovector dibaryon. The excitation function of the total cross section as a function of the \(\gamma d\) center-of-mass energy for the former reaction shows the evidence for the existence of 2.47- and 2.63-GeV isoscalar dibaryons.

Although the ω meson is one of the best established hadrons, its fundamental properties such as the interaction with the nucleon is not known yet due to the difficulties in realizing scattering experiments. Recently, we have performed high-precision photoproduction experiment of the ω meson from the proton near the threshold. The total cross sections are determined at incident energies ranging from 1.08 to 1.15 GeV. The 1/2 and 3/2 spin-averaged scattering length aωN and effective range rωN between the ω meson and nucleon are extracted from the excitation function of the total cross section using a model with the final-state ωN interaction based on the Lippmann-Schwinger equation. The obtained values are aωp=(−0.97−0.16+0.16)+i(0.07−0.14+0.15) fm and rωp=(+2.78−0.54+0.68)+i(−0.01−0.50+0.46) fm, suggesting a strong repulsion force.

Rupture of pancreatic pseudocyst is one of the rare complications and usually results in high mortality. The present case was a rupture of pancreatic pseudocyst that could be treated by surgical intervention. A 74-year-old man developed abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, and he was diagnosed with cholecystitis and pneumonia. Three days later, acute pancreatitis occurred and computed tomography (CT) showed slight hemorrhage in the cyst of the pancreatic tail. After another 10 days, CT showed pancreatic cyst ruptured due to intracystic hemorrhage. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography revealed leakage of contrast agent from pancreatic tail cyst to enclosed abdominal cavity. His left hypochondrial pain was increasing, and CT showed rupture of the cyst of the pancreatic tail into the peritoneal cavity was increased in 10 days. CT showed also two left renal tumors. Therefore we performed distal pancreatectomy with concomitant resection of transverse colon and left kidney. We histopathologically diagnosed pancreatic pseudocyst ruptured due to intracystic hemorrhage and renal cell carcinoma. Despite postoperative paralytic ileus and fluid collection at pancreatic stump, they improved by conservative management and he could be discharged on postoperative day 29. He has achieved relapse-free survival for 6 months postoperatively. The mortality of pancreatic pseudocyst rupture is very high if some effective medical interventions cannot be performed. It should be necessary to plan appropriate treatment strategy depending on each patient.

We report a novel scheme for fast ion bunch compression by barrier pulse control in an induction synchrotron in which an effective acceleration voltage pulse with a pseudo-linear slope is generated by temporal handling of rectangular induction acceleration pulses. With beam handling, a head-to-tail momentum gradient is yielded to the beam in a desired manner and the beam is gradually compressed over 30 turns. In the proof-of-principle experiment, which used a 75 μA He1+ beam at 50 keV per nucleon, the root mean square bunch length was reduced to 0.44 μs by a factor of 3.5 in 30 turns with no appreciable beam loss due to the beam compression scheme. This scheme is useful for various beam applications including ion beam heating.

Castleman's disease (CD) is an uncommon benign lymphoproliferative disorder of unknown etiology. A rare case of cervical CD diagnosed at lymph node dissection for esophageal carcinoma is reported. An esophageal tumor was identified in a 67-year-old man during a follow-up examination after surgery for oral carcinoma. Esophagoscopy revealed a type 1 tumor in the cervical esophagus. Histology of esophagoscopic biopsies indicated squamous cell carcinoma. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed swollen lymph nodes of the right cervical region. No distant metastasis was detected. Esophageal carcinoma, T2N2M0, Stage IIIA was diagnosed. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy was recommended, but the patient rejected the chemotherapy. The patient underwent laparoscopic-assisted transhiatal esophagectomy. The histopathological diagnosis was moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma with pT1bN0M0, Stage IA. On histology, the swollen lymph nodes of the right cervical region revealed CD. The patient's postoperative course was relatively good.

Background The malignant transformation of an ectopic pancreas in the duodenum is extremely rare. Herein, we report a case of an adenocarcinoma that arose from an ectopic pancreas. We also reviewed 14 cases of malignant transformations arising from an ectopic pancreas in the duodenum that were previously published. Case presentation An 81-year-old man with a 1-month history of vomiting was admitted to our institution. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and computed tomography (CT) scans revealed an obstruction at the first part of the duodenum. A distal gastrectomy was performed for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The histopathological examination of the resected specimen showed adenocarcinoma that arose from an ectopic pancreas (Heinrich type 1). The patient is alive without relapse at 18 months of follow-up. Conclusions Adenocarcinoma that arises from an ectopic pancreas should be considered when an obstruction is identified in the duodenum.

To predict the spring back after hot stamping of sheet metals, a user material routine incorporated with phase transformation effects has been developed and implemented in general-purpose commercial finite element software. The mechanical response of the metallographic structure incorporates variation of transformation plastic strain and transformation volume expansion. Additionally, the thermal response incorporates the dependencies of thermal properties and latent heat of phase transformation. The start timing of diffusive transformation was determined using Scheil’s law, and the Kolmogorov–Johnson–Mehl–Avrami equation was adopted for the progression of diffusive transformation. The Koistinen and Marburger equation was used for the progression of martensite transformation. Using the developed model, we considered the effects of phase transformation on shape fixability. We conducted experiments that focused on measuring the shape fixability of U-bend hot formed parts. In this study, we show that the spring back of the U-bend parts increases under conditions in which phase transformation occurs before formation has been completed. Furthermore, the spring back could accurately predict by using the developed model.

An electromagnetic calorimeter complex, FOREST, has been constructed for meson photoproduction experiments at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science, Tohoku University. It consists of three types of calorimeters, which are made of pure cesium-iodide crystals, lead scintillating-fiber modules, and lead glass Cherenkov counters. Each calorimeter is equipped with a plastic scintillator hodoscope to identify charged particles. The design and performance of FOREST are described. The energy responses of test calorimeters have been investigated by using 100–800 MeV positron beams. The energy resolutions of the three calorimeters are found to be approximately 3%, 7%, and 5% for 1-GeV photons, respectively. A cryogenic hydrogen/deuterium target system fitted to the FOREST experiments and a newly developed data acquisition system are also presented.

Background The high frequency of surgical site infections (SSIs) after hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery is a problem that needs to be addressed. This prospective, randomized, controlled study examined whether perioperative prophylactic use of antibiotics based on preoperative bile culture results in HPB surgery could decrease SSI. Methods Participants comprised 126 patients who underwent HPB (bile duct, gallbladder, ampullary, or pancreatic) cancer surgery with biliary reconstruction at Hokkaido University Hospital between August 2008 and March 2013 (UMIN Clinical Trial Registry #00001278). Before surgery, subjects were randomly allocated to a targeted group administered antibiotics based on bile culture results or a standard group administered cefmetazole. The primary endpoint was SSI rates within 30 days after surgery. Secondary endpoint was SSI rates for each operative procedure. Results Of the 126 patients, 124 were randomly allocated (targeted group, n = 62; standard group, n = 62). Frequency of SSI after surgery was significantly lower in the targeted group (27 patients, 43.5%) than in the standard group (44 patients, 71.0%; P = 0.002). Among patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy and hepatectomy, SSI occurred significantly less frequently in the targeted group (P = 0.001 and P = 0.025, respectively). Conclusions This study demonstrated that preoperative bile culture-targeted administration of prophylactic antibiotics decreased SSIs following HBP surgery with biliary reconstruction.

The importance of REE for modern industries is proved by the high demand. The abundance of REE is richer than that of noble metals like gold or silver. However, supply sources are concentrated in China. The share of the product of REE was highest in 2009 (over 90%) and that is used as a national strategy.Mining industry in Vietnam is mainly developed in northern part. Deposits of principle metals are located around Hanoi, and REE deposits (Dong Pao) is also explored in Lai Chau Province. On the other hand, few bauxite mine is in southern Vietnam and the REE exploration is not conducted enough. Therefore, the study about REE in southern Vietnam is significant. Samples are from mainly basalt and granite. REE pattern, which is normalized by the abundance of chondrite, of basaltic rocks and laterites shows that is decreases monotony. That amount of REE is low (50-180ppm). REE pattern of magnetite rocks and laterites has no Eu and Ce anomaly. On the other hand, illuminate rocks and laterites have strong negative Eu anomaly. Clay minerals were observed by XRD analysis using hydraulic elutriation. The result of REE pattern and sequential extraction, it is indicated that the form of HREE is changed and adsorbed to clay and LREE is leached out. In tailing in Stop 16, it is observed that the concentration of HREE (about 3 times to 5 times than that of before washing). Eu anomaly is affected by reductive environment of the cooling of magma, and it is considered that Ce anomaly is occurred by the change of Ce form (Ce3+ to Ce4+). An unusual case of pancreatic arteriovenous malformation (P-AVM) combined with esophageal cancer is reported. A 59-year-old man was admitted with upper abdominal pain. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed numerous strongly enhanced abnormal vessels and a hypovascular lesion in the area of the pancreatic tail. Angiographic study of the celiac artery confirmed racemose vascular networks in the tail of the pancreas. Endoscopic retrograde pancreatography revealed narrowing and displacement of the main pancreatic duct in the tail of the pancreas. Screening esophagoscopy showed a 0-IIa+IIc type tumor in the lower thoracic esophagus. Histological examination of esophagoscopic biopsies showed squamous cell carcinoma. Based on these findings, P-AVM or pancreatic cancer and esophageal cancer were diagnosed. Video-assisted thoracoscopic esophagectomy and distal pancreatectomy were performed. Histological examination of the resected pancreas revealed abundant abnormal vessels with intravascular thrombi. In addition, rupture of a dilated pancreatic duct with pancreatic stones and both severe atrophy and fibrosis of the pancreatic parenchyma were observed. The final diagnoses were P-AVM consequent to severe chronic pancreatitis and esophageal carcinoma. The patient's postoperative course was relatively good.

Polycrystalline films of undoped p-type GaSb0.8As0.2 with different thicknesses ranging from 0.1 to 1 μm were grown on glass substrates at a substrate temperature of 300 °C by molecular-beam deposition. Hall-effect measurements in the temperature range of 10–400 K revealed the coexisting valence-band and impurity-band conduction. A differential Hall-effect method was applied for the purpose of obtaining concentration and mobility of holes in the surface-side region of the film eliminating the effects of the underlying substrate-side region. Furthermore, a two-band conduction model was applied for the purpose of obtaining concentration and mobility of holes in the valence band eliminating the effects of the impurity-band conduction. The concentrations of a shallow acceptor level, a deep acceptor level, and a compensating donor level are deduced through fitting the experimental temperature dependence of valence-band hole concentration by the solution of the charge-balance equation. The mean value and the standard deviation of the grain-boundary barrier height as well as the mean free path are deduced through fitting the experimental temperature dependence of mobility by assuming the thermionic emission of holes over grain-boundary potential barriers with fluctuated heights. The estimated results of the above parameters are presented as a function of the distance from the substrate interface. Especially, it is shown that the mean free path of valence-band holes is almost unchanged while the height of grain-boundary potential barriers decreases with the distance from the substrate. The obtained results suggest the necessity of improving the electrical properties of GaSbAs layers near at the beginning of their deposition by some method, e.g., by inserting buffer layers, in the practical application for thin film transistors.

Aim To characterize novel multiple bacteriocins produced by Lactobacillus sakei D98. Methods and Results Lactobacillus sakei D98 isolated from Shubo (rice malt) produced at least three bacteriocins. Using three purification steps, three novel antimicrobial peptides termed sakacin D98a, sakacin D98b and sakacin D98c were purified from the culture supernatant. Amino acid and DNA sequencing analysis revealed that the sakacins D98a, D98b and D98c are novel class IIa-like or class IId bacteriocins. In particular, sakacin D98b has a variant pediocin-box sequence, YANGVXC (with Ala instead of Gly), and a different location for the disulfide bridge (Cys11 and Cys18) from that found in other class IIa bacteriocins. Conclusions Three novel bacteriocins were identified from Lactobacillus sakei D98. Their antimicrobial spectra and intensities indicate that these sakacins would have different modes of action. In addition, sakacin D98b showed low inhibitory activity against Listeria, probably due to the differences in amino acids and position of the disulfide bridge compared with the other class IIa bacteriocins. Significance and Impact of Study Sakacins D98a and D98c are novel bacteriocins belonging to class IId bacteriocins. On the other hand, sakacin D98b, a class IIa-like bacteriocin, has a unique internal structure and activity spectrum.

The total cross sections were measured for coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron at incident energies below 0.9 GeV for the first time. No clear resonance-like behavior is observed in the excitation function for $W_{\gamma d}=2.38$--2.61 GeV, where the $d^*(2380)$ dibaryon resonance observed at COSY is expected to appear. The measured excitation function is consistent with the existing theoretical calculation for this reaction. The upper limit of the total cross section is found to be $0.034$~$\mu$b for the dibaryon resonance at $W_{\gamma d}=2.37$~GeV (90\% confidence level) in the $\gamma d \to \pi^0\pi^0 d$ reaction., Comment: submitted to Physics Letters B

Polycrystalline films of undoped GaSb, GaSb0.86As0.14, and GaSb0.8As0.2 were grown on glass substrates by molecular-beam deposition. Hall-effect measurements were performed in the temperature range of 10-400 K. Temperature dependences of concentration and mobility of holes at low temperatures were well explained in terms of two-band conduction consisting of impurity-band and valence-band conduction which is limited predominantly by potential barriers at grain boundaries. The procedure for analyzing the Hall-effect data is extended to be applicable to the sample involving not only the impurity band but also an additional deep acceptor level as well as a compensating donor level, so that the experimental results at high temperatures can also be well simulated.
