Abstract We measured the rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) voltammetry curves of a Pt catalyst supported on Marimo-like carbon (MC) to clarify the effect of carbon nanofilaments (CNFs) morphology and fine structures consisting of MC cathode material on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity for Polymer electrolyte fuel cells. The specific surface area and pore volume of MCs are influenced by their morphology and fine structures. MCs grown with Ni–Cu bimetal catalyst (represented as Ni80Cu20MC), having an octopus-like morphology, yielded four times larger total pore volume than that measured from the MC grown with Ni catalyst (Ni100MC). In the case of Ni80Cu20MC, coin-stacked graphenes perpendicular to the filament axis formed CNFs. Ni100MC consists of cup-stacked CNFs. The difference in the graphene stacked fine structure resulted in a different number of graphene edges covering the CNF surface; however, both supported Pt particle sizes and their distributions were similar. Linear sweep voltammetry with a RRDE revealed that the Pt/Ni80Cu20MC ORR onset potential was higher than that observed from the Pt/Ni100MC. This value is suggested to be correlates with the ORR activity. The origin of the ORR difference was discussed on the basis of the structural difference in the MCs.

Background: In Japan, there are no studies comparing endotracheal intubation performed by emergency medical technicians (EMTs) during out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) using a Macintosh laryngoscope and a video laryngoscope. Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the success rate, complication rate, return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), neurological prognosis (CPC1-2) and regional differences between Video laryngoscope (VL) and Macintosh laryngoscope (ML) for OHCA patients. Method: This study is a retrospective cohort study using 10,067 OHCA data extracted from the national Utstein Form and emergency medical transport data. The primary endpoint was the success rate of tracheal intubation and the complication rate and the secondary endpoints were the incidence of ROSC and CPC1-2. Results: A total of 885 tracheal Intubated OHCA patients were enrolled in this study. The success rate was 94.1% (490/521) in the VL group and 89.3% (325/364) in the ML group (RR, 1.05; 95%CI, 1.01–1.10, P = 0.01), the VL group shows significantly higher success rate than that of the ML group. Aim: In assisted reproductive technology (ART), there are different opinions regarding how an embryo should be transferred to the uterus. For double embryo transfer (DET) cycles in particular, there is no consensus regarding the appropriate embryo transfer (ET) method. Therefore, the present authors developed a novel ET method called separated (s-DET); with this method, two embryos are transferred to separate settings. The authors evaluated and compared pregnancy outcomes of s-DET and conventional DET (c-DET). Materials and Methods: In this prospective cohort study, 129 patients underwent separated ET. One hundred fifty-two patients underwent c-DET, which involves transferring two embryos together. All patients underwent ET of two frozen-thawed embryos. Results: The clinical pregnancy and implantation rates of the s-DET group were 20.9 % and 10.4 %, respectively; these rates were similar to those of the conventional DET group (26.3 % and 16.1 %, respectively). However, the multiple gestation rate of the D-DET group (0.0 %) was significantly lower than that of the conventional double ET group (22.5 %; p = 0.006). Conclusions: s-DET might make ART safer and decrease multiple gestations resulting from DET cycles.

In this work, we investigated polarization-resolved photoinduced carrier relaxation dynamics associated with charge ordering (CO) in geometrically frustrated organic conductors θ-(BEDT-TTF)_{2}MZn(SCN)_{4} (M = Rb, Cs) as a function of temperature. In θ-Rb (M = Rb), a polarization-dependent (anisotropic) and independent (isotropic) dynamics show similar temperature dependence. Moreover, discontinuous changes in transient reflectivity amplitude and an enhancement of a relaxation time are observed only upon heating near T_{co}=195K. This is associated with the first order phase transition due to long-range CO. However, in θ-Cs (M = Cs) where the frustration is stronger than that in θ-Rb, as temperature decreases below T_{nco}≈ 150 K, the anisotropic component only slightly decreases while the isotropic one increases gradually without hysteresis. The behaviors indicate that CO is formed nonuniformly, that is, multiple short-range CO domains appear and are distributed with different orientations. Moreover, we found that the anisotropic dynamics with long-relaxation times suppress below T_{s}≈ 50 K, which is lower than the charge glass transition temperature of T_{g}∼ 100 K, whereas the isotropic dynamics grows monotonically. The distinct difference between them suggests the occurrence of a structural transition in which the lattice deforms randomly to match a glassy charge distribution due to the charge-lattice coupling.

Whilst CPR training is widely recommended, quality of performance is infrequently explored. We evaluated whether a checklist can be an adequate tool for chest compression quality assessment in schoolchildren, compared with a real-time software. This observational study (March 2019–2020) included 104 schoolchildren with no previous CPR training (11–17 years old, 66 girls, 84 primary schoolchildren, 20 high schoolchildren). Simultaneous evaluations of CPR quality were performed using an observational checklist and real-time software. High-quality CPR was determined as a combination of 70% correct maneuvers in compression rate (100–120/min), depth (5–6 cm), and complete release, using a real-time software and three positive performance in skills using a checklist. We adjusted a multivariate logistic regression model for age, sex, and BMI. We found moderate to high agreement percentages in quality of CPR performance (rate: 68.3%, depth: 79.8%, and complete release: 91.3%) between a checklist and real-time software. Only 38.5% of schoolchildren (~14 years-old, ~54.4 kg, and ~22.1 kg/m2) showed high-quality CPR. High-quality CPR was more often performed by older schoolchildren (OR = 1.43, 95%IC:1.09–1.86), and sex was not an independent factor (OR = 1.26, 95%IC:0.52–3.07). For high-quality CPR in schoolchildren, a checklist showed moderate to high agreement with real-time software. Better performance was associated with age regardless of sex and BMI.

Objectives: We aimed to estimate the relationship between the promotion of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with dispatcher-assistance over time and good cerebral function after out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs). Methods: This was a retrospective observational study, using a nationwide OHCA database in Japan. The eligible 267,193 witnessed cardiogenic OHCA patients between 2005 and 2016 were analysed. Multivariable logistic regression models were performed to estimate the effect of dispatcher-assisted bystander CPR per year. In addition, we calculated the number of patients with good cerebral function, which was attributed to dispatcher-assisted bystander CPR. Results: Dispatcher-assisted bystander CPR was performed to 84,076 (31.5%), those without dispatcher-assistance were 48,389 (18.1%), and non-bystander CPR were 134,728 (50.4%). The adjusted odds ratio (AOR) of dispatcher-assisted bystander CPR vs. non-bystander CPR was significantly related to good cerebral function, regardless of the year (AOR, 1.47, 1.62; 95%CI, 1.19-1.80, 1.42-1.85, 2005 and 2016, respectively). The association of dispatcher-assisted bystander CPR with good cerebral function tended to increase (AOR, 1.11, 2.97; 95%CI, 0.99-1.24, 2.69-3.28, 2006 and 2016, based on 2005, respectively). Estimating the number of patients with good cerebral function who attributed to dispatcher-assisted bystander CPR was a significant increase from 41 in 2005 to 580 in 2016 (p < .0001, r = 0.98). Furthermore, chest compression consistently contributed to higher number of patients with good cerebral function than that with a combination of chest compression and shock with public-access-defibrillation. Conclusion: We found that the increased dispatcher-assisted bystander CPR rate was related to good cerebral function at 1-month post OHCA. Chest compression without public-access-defibrillation was most helpful to that number, explaining the effects of dispatcher-assistance and sustaining improvement.

Double electron capture is a rare nuclear decay process in which two orbital electrons are captured simultaneously in the same nucleus. Measurement of its two-neutrino mode would provide a new reference for the calculation of nuclear matrix elements whereas observation of its neutrinoless mode would demonstrate lepton number violation. A search for two-neutrino double electron capture on 124Xe is performed using 165.9 days of data collected with the XMASS-I liquid xenon detector. No significant excess above background was observed and we set a lower limit on the half-life as 4.7×1021 years at 90% confidence level. The obtained limit has ruled out parts of some theoretical expectations. We obtain a lower limit on the 126Xe two-neutrino double electron capture half-life of 4.3×1021 years at 90% confidence level as well.

OBJECTIVES: There is evidence that outdoor workers exposed to high levels of air pollution exhibit airway inflammation and increased airway symptoms. We hypothesized that these workers would experience increased airway symptoms and decreased nasal mucociliary clearance associated with their exposure to air pollution. METHODS: In total, 25 non-smoking commercial motorcyclists, aged 18-44 years, were included in this study. These drivers work 8-12 hours per day, 5 days per week, driving on urban streets. Nasal mucociliary clearance was measured by the saccharine transit test; airway acidification was measured by assessing the pH of exhaled breath condensate; and airway symptoms were measured by the Sino-nasal Outcome Test-20 questionnaire. To assess personal air pollution exposure, the subjects used a passive-diffusion nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentration-monitoring system during the 14 days before each assessment. The associations between NO2 and the airway outcomes were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test and the Chi-Square test. Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT01976039. RESULTS: Compared with clearance in healthy adult males, mucociliary clearance was decreased in 32% of the motorcyclists. Additionally, 64% of the motorcyclists had airway acidification and 92% experienced airway symptoms. The median personal NO2 exposure level was 75 mg/m3 for these subjects and a significant association was observed between NO2 and impaired mucociliary clearance (p = 0.036). CONCLUSION: Non-smoking commercial motorcyclists exhibit increased airway symptoms and airway acidification as well as decreased nasal mucociliary clearance, all of which are significantly associated with the amount of exposure to air pollution.

PURPOSE: Cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) has been used as a useful model for the induction of polymicrobial sepsis. Necrotic tissue resection and peritoneal lavage (REL) are the surgical procedures for controlling perforated appendicitis. The aim of this study was to evaluate leukocyte-endothelial interactions in the rat mesentery in vivo after CLP and REL. METHODS: Thirty-seven male Wistar rats (250-300 g) underwent laparotomy and were randomly assigned to the following groups: 1) SHAM; 2) CLP: animals submitted to CLP, 3) CLP+REL: animals submitted to CLP and REL. Mesenteric leukocyte-endothelial interactions were studied by intravital microscopy assessed once in each animal (3-5 postcapillary venules, 15-25 µm diameter) 24 hours after intervention. Follow-up was performed in all animals; this included analysis of glycemia, lactate, hematocrit, white blood cell count as well as a functional score that was the sum of scoring on the following parameters: alertness, mobility, piloerection, diarrhea, encrusted eyes, and dirty nose and tail. RESULTS: None of the animals showed significant changes in body weight (265 ± 20 g) or in hematocrit levels (46% ± 2%) during the experimental protocol. Compared to SHAM animals, CLP animals showed an increased number of rolling (2x), adherent, and migrating leukocytes (7x) in the mesenteric microcirculation, an increase in blood glucose (136 ± 8 mg/dL), lactate (3.58 ± 0.94 mmol/L), white cell count (23,570 ± 4,991 cells/mm³) and functional alterations (score 11 ± 1), characterized by impaired alertness and mobility, and presence of piloerection, diarrhea, encrusted eyes, and dirty nose and tail. The REL procedure normalized the number of rolling, adherent, and migrated leukocytes in the mesentery; glycemia; lactate; and white blood cell count. The REL procedure also improved the functional score (7 ± 1). CONCLUSION: Local and systemic inflammation was induced by CLP, while REL completely overcame the inflammatory process.OBJETIVO: O procedimento de ligadura cecal e perfuração (CLP) tem sido usado como um modelo útil de indução de sepse polimicrobiana. A ressecção do tecido necrosado e lavagem peritoneal (REL) são procedimentos cirúrgicos freqüentemente utilizados para controlar uma apendicite perfurada. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar in vivo as interações leucócito-endotélio no mesentério de ratos após a CLP e REL. MÉTODOS: Trinta e sete ratos Wistar machos (250-300 g) foram submetidos à laparotomia e aleatoriamente divididos em grupos: 1) SHAM, 2) CLP: ratos submetidos à CLP, 3) CLP+REL: animais submetidos à CLP e REL. As interações leucócito-endotélio no mesentério foram estudadas através de microscopia intravital somente uma vez em cada animal (3-5 vênulas pós-capilares, 15-25 µm diâmetro), 24-horas após as intervenções. A evolução clínica foi realizada em todos os animais, incluindo glicemia, lactato, hematócrito, número total de células brancas e um escore funcional, o qual foi considerado como a somatória dos seguintes parâmetros: estado de alerta, mobilidade, piloereção, diarréia, olhos encrustados, e nariz e cauda sujos. RESULTADOS: Os animais não apresentaram alterações significantes no peso (265 ± 20 g) e hematócrito (46 ± 2%) ao longo do estudo. Comparados ao SHAM, os animais CLP apresentaram aumento no número de leucócitos em rolamento (2x), aderidos (7x) e migrados (7x) na microcirculação mesentérica, aumentos da glicemia (136 ± 8 mg/dL), lactato (3,58 ± 0,94 mmol/L), leucocitose (23.570 ± 4.991 células/mm³) e alterações clínicas (escore 11±1), caracterizadas por comprometimento do estado de alerta e mobilidade, e presença de piloereção, diarréia, olhos encrustados, nariz e cauda sujos. REL normalizou o número de leucócitos em rolamento, aderidos e migrados no mesentério, a glicemia, o lactato e o número de leucócitos circulantes. REL também melhorou o escore clínico (7 ± 1). CONCLUSÃO: A CLP induziu inflamação local e sistêmica. A REL resolveu, por completo, o processo inflamatório.
