The structure of nuclei around the neutron-rich nucleus 132Sn is of particular interest due to the vicinity of the Z = 50 and N = 82 shell closures and the r-process nucleosynthetic path. Four states in 131Sn with a strong single-particle-like component have previously been studied via the (d,p) reaction, with limited excitation energy resolution. The 130Sn(9Be,8Be)131Sn and 130Sn(13C,12C)131Sn single-neutron transfer reactions were performed in inverse kinematics at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility using particle-gamma coincidence spectroscopy. The uncertainties in the energies of the single-particle-like states have been reduced by more than an order of magnitude using the energies of gamma rays. The previous tentative Jpi values have been confirmed. Decays from high-spin states in 131Sn have been observed following transfer on the isomeric component of the 130Sn beam. The improved energies and confirmed spin-parities of the p-wave states important to the r-process lead to direct-semidirect cross-sections for neutron capture on the ground state of 130Sn at 30 keV that are in agreement with previous analyses. A similar assessment of the impact of neutron-transfer on the isomer would require significant nuclear structure and reaction theory input. Energy production in Type Ia x-ray bursts depends on a number of nuclear reactions that become efficient in a hot environment (up to 2 GK). Model sensitivity studies have been performed in an effort to better identify the reactions that have the largest effect, but these efforts are hampered by the high level of complexity of the astrophysical model and large nuclear physics uncertainties. In a recent study, the $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}(\ensuremath{\alpha},p)^{27}\mathrm{Al}$ reaction was found to significantly affect the energy generation in x-ray bursts. This manuscript reports the first study of the $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}(\ensuremath{\alpha},{p}_{1,2}\ensuremath{\gamma})^{27}\mathrm{Al}$ reaction at energies relevant for x-ray bursts. The branches to the $^{27}\mathrm{Al}$ excited states increase to a small degree the estimates of the total astrophysical $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}(\ensuremath{\alpha},p)^{27}\mathrm{Al}$ reaction rate.

Precise antineutrino measurements are very sensitive to proper background characterization. We present an improved measurement of the $^{13}\mathrm{C}(\ensuremath{\alpha},n)^{16}\mathrm{O}$ reaction cross section which constitutes significant background for large $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ detectors. We greatly improve the precision and accuracy by utilizing a setup that is sensitive to the neutron energies while making measurements of the excited state transitions via secondary $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray detection. Our results shows a 54% reduction in the background contributions from the $^{16}\mathrm{O}({3}^{\ensuremath{-}},6.13\text{ }\mathrm{MeV})$ state used in the KamLAND analysis.

In atomic nuclei, the spin-orbit interaction originates from the coupling of the orbital motion of a nucleon with its intrinsic spin. Recent experimental and theoretical works have suggested a weakening of the spin-orbit interaction in neutron-rich nuclei far from stability. To study this phenomenon, we have investigated the spin-orbit energy splittings of single-hole and single-particle valence neutron orbits of 132Sn. The spectroscopic strength of single-hole states in 131Sn was determined from the measured differential cross sections of the tritons from the neutron-removing 132Sn(d, t)131Sn reaction, which was studied in inverse kinematics at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The spectroscopic factors of the lowest 3/2+, 1/2+ and 5/2+ states were found to be consistent with their maximal values of (2j+1), confirming the robust N=82 shell closure at 132Sn. We compared the spin-orbit splitting of neutron single-hole states in 131Sn to those of single-particle states in 133Sn determined in a recent measurement of the 132Sn(d, p)133Sn reaction. We found a significant reduction of the energy splitting of the weakly bound 3p orbits compared to the well-bound 2d orbits, and that all the observed energy splittings can be reproduced remarkably well by calculations using a one-body spin-orbit interaction and a Woods–Saxon potential of standard radius and diffuseness. The observed reduction of spin-orbit splitting can be explained by the extended radial wavefunctions of the weakly bound orbits, without invoking a weakening of the spin-orbit strength. Direct measurements of ( α , p ) reactions of astrophysical interest with radioactive beams presents serious challenges because of the difficult nature of helium targets and the typical low intensities of the beams. To address this, a new technique has been developed for measurements of low-energy ( α , p ) reactions with heavy ion beams using an extended 4 He gas target and a newly developed gas recirculating system. The system was used to measure the 4 He(19F, 1 H)22Ne reaction as a demonstration. Excitation functions of the 19F( α , p )22Ne and 19F( α , p ′ )22Ne ∗ reactions were successfully measured to show the viability of this technique. Details of the approach and future plans are given.

An efficient neutron detection system with good energy resolution is required to correctly characterize decays of neutron-rich nuclei where $\beta-$delayed neutron emission is a dominant decay mode. The Neutron dEtector with Xn Tracking (NEXT) has been designed to measure $\beta$-delayed neutron emitters. By segmenting the detector along the neutron flight path, NEXT reduces the associated uncertainties in neutron time-of-flight measurements, improving energy resolution while maintaining detection efficiency. Detector prototypes are comprised of optically separated segments of a neutron-gamma discriminating plastic scintillator coupled to position-sensitive photomultiplier tubes. The first performance studies of this detector showed that high intrinsic neutron detection efficiency could be achieved while retaining good energy resolution. The structure of nuclei provides insight into astrophysical reaction rates that are difficult to measure directly. These studies are often performed with transfer reactions and β-decay measurements. These experiments benefit from particle-γ coincidence measurements which provide information beyond that of particle detection alone. The Hybrid Array of Gamma Ray Detectors (HAGRiD) of LaBr3(Ce) scintillators has been designed with this purpose in mind. The design of the array permits it to be coupled with particle detector systems, such as the Oak Ridge Rutgers University Barrel Array (ORRUBA) of silicon detectors and the Versatile Array of Neutron Detectors at Low Energy (VANDLE). It is also designed to operate with the Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics (JENSA) advanced target system. HAGRiD’s design avoids compromising the charged-particle angular resolution due to compact geometries which are often used to increase the γ efficiency in other systems. First experiments with HAGRiD coupled to VANDLE as well as ORRUBA and JENSA are discussed.

Over the last decade, the Low-Energy Nuclear Physics (LENP) and Nuclear Astrophysics (NAP) communities have increasingly organized themselves in order to take a coherent approach to resolving the challenges they face. As a result, there is a high level of optimism in view of the unprecedented opportunities for substantial progress. In preparation of the 2015 US Nuclear Science Long Range Plan (LRP), the two American Physical Society Division of Nuclear Physics town meetings on LENP and NAP were held jointly on August 21–23, 2014, at Texas A&M, College Station, in Texas. These meetings were co-organized to take advantage of the strong synergy between the two fields. The present White Paper attempts to communicate the sense of great anticipation and enthusiasm that came out of these meetings. A unanimously endorsed set of joint resolutions condensed from the individual recommendations of the two town meetings were agreed upon. The present LENP White Paper discusses the above and summarizes in detail for each of the sub-fields within low-energy nuclear physics, the major accomplishments since the last LRP, the compelling near-term and long-term scientific opportunities plus the resources needed to achieve these goals, along with the scientific impact on, and interdisciplinary connections to, other fields.

Results are presented from the first neutron-transfer measurement on $^{80}\mathrm{Ge}$ using an exotic beam from the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Newly measured spins and spectroscopic factors of low-lying states of $^{81}\mathrm{Ge}$ are determined, and the neutron capture cross section on $^{80}\mathrm{Ge}$ was calculated in a direct-semidirect model to provide a more realistic ($n,\ensuremath{\gamma}$) reaction rate for $r$-process simulations. Furthermore, a region of shape coexistence around $N\ensuremath{\approx}50$ is confirmed and implications for the magic nature of $^{78}\mathrm{Ni}$ are discussed.

Half of the elements heavier than iron are believed to be produced through the rapid neutron-capture process ($r$ process). The astrophysical environment(s) where the $r$ process occurs remains an open question, even after recent observations of neutron-star mergers and the associated kilonova. Features in the abundance pattern of $r$-process ashes may provide critical insight for distinguishing contributions from different possible sites, including neutron-star mergers and core-collapse supernovae. In particular, the largely unknown neutron-capture reaction rates on neutron-rich unstable nuclei near $^{132}\mathrm{Sn}$ could have a significant impact on the final $r$-process abundances. To better determine these neutron-capture rates, the $(d,p)$ reaction has been measured in inverse kinematics using radioactive ion beams of $^{126}\mathrm{Sn}$ and $^{128}\mathrm{Sn}$ and a stable beam of $^{124}\mathrm{Sn}$ interacting with a ${({\mathrm{CD}}_{2})}_{n}$ target. An array of position-sensitive silicon strip detectors, including the Super Oak Ridge Rutgers University Barrel Array, was used to detect light reaction products. In addition to the present measurements, previous measurements of $^{130,132}\mathrm{Sn}(d,p)$ were reanalyzed using state-of-the-art reaction theory to extract a consistent set of spectroscopic factors for $(d,p)$ reactions on even tin nuclei between the heaviest stable isotope $^{124}\mathrm{Sn}$ and doubly magic $^{132}\mathrm{Sn}$. The spectroscopic information was used to calculate direct-semidirect $(n,\ensuremath{\gamma})$ cross sections, which will serve as important input for $r$-process abundance calculations.

GODDESS is a coupling of the charged-particle detection system ORRUBA to the gamma-ray detector array Gammasphere. This coupling has been developed in order to facilitate the high-resolution measurement of direct reactions in normal and inverse kinematics with stable and radioactive beams. GODDESS has been commissioned using a beam of 134 Xe at 10 MeV/A, in a campaign of stable beam measurements. The measurement demonstrates the capabilities of GODDESS under radioactive beam conditions, and provides the first data on the single-neutron states in 135 Xe, including previously unobserved states based on the orbitals above the N=82 shell closure.

Much effort has been made to understand the origins of 18F in novae. Due to its relatively long half-life (~2 hours), 18F can survive until the nova envelope is transparent, and therefore can provide a sensitive diagnostic of nova nucleosynthesis. It is likely produced through the beta decay of 18Ne, which is itself produced (primarily) through the 17F(p,γ) reaction. Understanding the direct capture contribution to the 17F(p,γ) reaction is important to accurately calculate it. As such, the proton spectroscopic strengths of low-lying states in 18Ne are needed. At the University of Notre Dame a measurement of the 17F(d,n) reaction has been performed using a beam produced by the TwinSol low energy radioactive beam facility. Preliminary data analysis is presented.

Detection of nuclear-decay γ rays provides a sensitive thermometer of nova nucleosynthesis. The most intense γ-ray flux is thought to be annihilation radiation from the β^{+} decay of ^{18}F, which is destroyed prior to decay by the ^{18}F(p,α)^{15}O reaction. Estimates of ^{18}F production had been uncertain, however, because key near-threshold levels in the compound nucleus, ^{19}Ne, had yet to be identified. We report the first measurement of the ^{19}F(^{3}He,tγ)^{19}Ne reaction, in which the placement of two long-sought 3/2^{+} levels is suggested via triton-γ-γ coincidences. The precise determination of their resonance energies reduces the upper limit of the rate by a factor of 1.5-17 at nova temperatures and reduces the average uncertainty on the nova detection probability by a factor of 2.1.

The astrophysical F 18 ( p , α ) O 15 rate determines, in large part, the extent to which the observable radioisotope 18 F is produced in novae. This rate, however, has been extremely uncertain owing to the unknown properties of a strong subthreshold resonance and its possible interference with higher-lying resonances. The new Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics (JENSA) gas-jet target has been used for the first time to determine the spin of this important resonance and significantly reduce uncertainties in the F 18 ( p , α ) O 15 rate.

To take full advantage of advanced exotic beam facilities, target technology must also be advanced. Particularly important to the study of astrophysical reaction rates is the creation of localized and dense targets of hydrogen and helium. The Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics (JENSA) gas-jet target has been constructed for this purpose. JENSA was constructed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) where it was tested and characterized, and has now moved to the ReA3 reaccelerated beam hall at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University for use with radioactive beams.

Transfer reactions have provided exciting opportunities to study the structure of exotic nuclei and are often used to inform studies relating to nucleosynthesis and applications. In order to benefit from these reactions and their application to rare ion beams (RIBs) it is necessary to develop the tools and techniques to perform and analyze the data from reactions performed in inverse kinematics, that is with targets of light nuclei and heavier beams. We are continuing to expand the transfer reaction toolbox in preparation for the next generation of facilities, such as the Facility for Rare Ion Beams (FRIB), which is scheduled for completion in 2022. An important step in this process is to perform the (d,n) reaction in inverse kinematics, with analyses that include Q-value spectra and differential cross sections. In this way, proton-transfer reactions can be placed on the same level as the more commonly used neutron-transfer reactions, such as (d,p), (9Be,8Be), and (13C,12C). Here we present an overview of the techniques used in (d,p) and (d,n), and some recent data from (d,n) reactions in inverse kinematics using stable beams of 12C and 16O., 9 pages, 4 figures, presented at the XXXV Mazurian Lakes Conference on Physics, Piaski, Poland

The Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics (JENSA) gas-jet target was used to perform spectroscopic studies of $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}+p$ reactions. Levels in $^{19}\mathrm{Ne}$ were probed via the $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}(p,d)^{19}\mathrm{Ne}$ reaction to constrain the astrophysical rate of the $^{18}\mathrm{F}(p,\ensuremath{\alpha})^{15}\mathrm{O}$ reaction. Additionally, the first spectroscopic study of the $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}(p,^{3}\mathrm{He})^{18}\mathrm{F}$ reaction was performed. Angular distribution data were used to determine or confirm the spins of several previously observed levels, and the existence of a strong subthreshold $^{18}\mathrm{F}(p,\ensuremath{\alpha})^{15}\mathrm{O}$ resonance was verified.

Over the last two decades transfer reactions have seen a resurgence following developments in methods to use them with exotic beams. An important step in this evolution was the ability to perform the (d,p) reaction on fission fragment beams using the inverse kinematics technique, built on the experience with light beams. There has been renewed interest in using ($^9$Be, $^8$Be) and ($^{13}$C, $^{12}$C) reactions to selectively populate single-particle like states that can be studied via their subsequent decay. These reactions have been successfully utilized in the $^{132}$Sn region. Additionally, our collaboration has recently performed experiments with GODDESS, a combination of the full ORRUBA detector and Gammasphere arrays. Another new direction is measuring neutrons from (d,n) reactions, performed in inverse kinematics, with the VANDLE array of plastic scintillators. Presented below is an overview of these new techniques and some of the early data from recent experiments.

When a neutron star accretes hydrogen and helium from the outer layers of its companion star, thermonuclear burning enables the α p-process as a break out mechanism from the hot CNO cycle. Model calculations predict ( α , p) reaction rates significantly affect both the light curves and elemental abundances in the burst ashes. The Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics (JENSA) gas jet target enables the direct measurement of previously inaccessible ( α ,p) reactions with radioactive beams provided by the rare isotope re-accelerator ReA3 at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL), USA. JENSA is going to be the main target for the Recoil Separator for Capture Reactions (SECAR) at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). Commissioning of JENSA and first experiments at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) showed a highly localized, pure gas target with a density of ∼10 19 atoms per square centimeter. Preliminary results are presented from the first direct cross section measurement of the 34 Ar( α , p) 37 K reaction at NSCL.

The neutron-deficient nucleus Sn 107 has been studied by using the one-neutron knockout reaction. By measuring the decay γ rays and momentum distributions of reaction residues, the spins of the ground, 5/2 + , and first-excited, 7/2 + , states of Sn 107 have been assigned by comparisons to eikonal-model reaction calculations. Limits on the inclusive and exclusive cross sections have been measured and transitions due to neutron removals from below the N=50 closed shell have been observed. New excited states up to 5.5 MeV in Sn 107 have been identified.

Knowledge of the 3He(3He,2p)4He reaction is important for understanding stellar burning and solar neutrino production. Previous measurements have found a surprisingly large rise in the cross section at low energies that could be due to a low-energy resonance in the 3He + 3He (6Be) system or electron screening. In the 6Be nucleus, however, no excited states have been observed above the first 2+ state at Ex = 1.67 MeV up to 23 MeV, even though several are expected. The 2H(7Be,3H)6Be reaction has been studied for the first time to search for resonances in the 6Be nucleus that may affect our understanding of the 3He(3He,2p)4He reaction. A 100-MeV radioactive 7Be beam from the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) was used to bombard CD2 targets, and tritons were detected by using the silicon detector array (SIDAR). A combination of reaction mechanisms appears to be necessary to explain the observed triton energy spectrum.

The physics of nuclei is not a democratic field. It has to be said, some nuclei are just more interesting than others. And some are more useful than others, either to explain the origins of the elements, or the nature of matter itself, or for uses in medicine and other applied fields. The trick is to work out which nuclei are going to be the most important, and then go out and make them. Nuclear physicists are getting increasingly better in fabricating and characterizing short‐lived nuclei with desired properties, the designer nuclei. This paper describes selected frontiers of this research. For an in‐depth overview, the reader is referred to the recent report.1

The unbound isotopes 10Li, 12Li and 13Li have been observed after nucleon-knockout reactions at relativistic energies with 11Li and 14Be beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The channels , and were analysed in the ALADIN-LAND setup at GSI. The 10Li data confirm earlier findings, while the 12Li and 13Li nuclei were observed for the first time. The relative-energy spectrum shows that the ground state of 12Li can be described as a virtual s-state with a scattering length of -13.7(1.6) fm. A broad energy spectrum was found for the channel. Based on the assumption that the relative-energy spectrum is dominated by a correlated background presumably stemming from initial correlations in the 14Be ground-state, evidence for a 13Li resonance at 1.47(31) MeV above the threshold with a width around 2 MeV has been found.

We report here on experiments with radioactive 21 Na and 7 Be beams performed by Colorado School of Mines students at the ISAC facility of TRIUMF and the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) of ORNL. At TRIUMF, the DRAGON recoil separator and its segmented BGO array were used to investigate higher energy resonances in the reaction H( 21 Na, γ) 22 Mg. Using the HRIBF we performed an experiment with a 7 Be ion beam to measure scattering off Hydrogen and Carbon. Both elastic 7 Be + p scattering and for the first time resonant inelastic scattering 7 Be(p, p′) 7 Be ∗ were observed.

The development of high quality radioactive beams, such as those at the HRIBF at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has made possible the measurement of transfer reactions in inverse kinematics on unstable nuclei. Measurement of (d,p) reactions on neutron-rich nuclei yield data on the evolution of nuclear structure away from stability, and are of astrophysical interest due to the proximity of suggested nuclear burning paths in the astrophysical r-process in supernovae. Experimentally, (d,p) reactions on heavy (Z = 50) fission fragments are complicated by the strongly inverse kinematics, and the relatively low beam intensities. Consequently, ejectile detection with high resolution in position and energy, a high dynamic range and a high solid angular coverage is required. The Oak Ridge Rutgers University Barrel Array (ORRUBA) is a new silicon detector array currently under construction, optimized for the measurement of (d,p) reactions in inverse kinematics. It consists of two rings of silicon detectors, providing a high solid angular coverage for angles symmetrically forward and backward of 90°. Resistive strip detectors are used to obtain high precision position and energy measurement of reaction ejectiles.

The neutron-rich isotopes 129–133Sn were studied in a Coulomb excitation experiment at about 500 AMeV using the FRS-LAND setup at GSI. From the exclusive measurement of all projectile-like particles following the excitation and decay of the projectile in a high-Z target, the energy differential cross section can be extracted. At these beam energies dipole transitions are dominating, and within the semi-classical approach the Coulomb excitation cross sections can be transformed into photoabsorption cross sections. In contrast to stable Sn nuclei, a substantial fraction of dipole strength is observed at energies below the giant dipole resonance (GDR). For 130Sn and 132Sn this strength is located in a peak-like structure around 10 MeV excitation energy and exhibits a few percent of the Thomas-Reiche Kuhn (TRK) sum-rule strength. Several calculations predict the appearance of dipole strength at low excitation energies in neutron-rich nuclei. This low-lying strength is often referred to as pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) and, in a macroscopic picture, is discussed in terms of a collective oscillation of excess neutrons versus the core nucleons. Moreover, a sharp rise is observed at the neutron separation threshold around 5 MeV for the odd isotopes. A possible contribution of 'threshold strength', which can be described within the direct-breakup model is discussed. The results for the neutron-rich Sn isotopes are confronted with results on stable nuclei investigated in experiments using real photons.

The Galactic 1.809-MeV $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray signature from the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay of $^{26g}\mathrm{Al}$ is a dominant target of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray astronomy, of which a significant component is understood to originate from massive stars. The $^{26g}\mathrm{Al}(p,\ensuremath{\gamma})^{27}\mathrm{Si}$ reaction is a major destruction pathway for $^{26g}\mathrm{Al}$ at stellar temperatures, but the reaction rate is poorly constrained due to uncertainties in the strengths of low-lying resonances in $^{27}\mathrm{Si}$. The $^{26g}\mathrm{Al}(d,p)^{27}\mathrm{Al}$ reaction has been employed in inverse kinematics to determine the spectroscopic factors, and hence resonance strengths, of proton resonances in $^{27}\mathrm{Si}$ via mirror symmetry. The strength of the 127-keV resonance is found to be a factor of 4 higher than the previously adopted upper limit, and the upper limit for the 68-keV resonance has been reduced by an order of magnitude, considerably constraining the $^{26g}\mathrm{Al}$ destruction rate at stellar temperatures.

International audience; The Galactic 1.809-MeV γ-ray signature from the β decay of $^{26g}$Al is a dominant target of γ-rayastronomy, of which a significant component is understood to originate from massive stars. The$^{26g}$Al(p; γ)$^{27}$Si reaction is a major destruction pathway for $^{26g}$Al at stellar temperatures, but the reactionrate is poorly constrained due to uncertainties in the strengths of low-lying resonances in $^{27}$Si. The$^{26g}$Al(d; p)$^{27}$Al reaction has been employed in inverse kinematics to determine the spectroscopic factors,and hence resonance strengths, of proton resonances in $^{27}$Si via mirror symmetry. The strength of the127-keV resonance is found to be a factor of 4 higher than the previously adopted upper limit, and the upperlimit for the 68-keV resonance has been reduced by an order of magnitude, considerably constraining the$^{26g}$Al destruction rate at stellar temperatures.

Initial measurements are presented of the (d,p) reactions on neutron-rich N = 50 isotones along the r-process path of nucleosynthesis with radioactive ion beams of 82Ge and 84Se. Prospects for measurements with unstable 130,132Sn beams are discussed.

Yields of neutrons produced by a 238U ion beam of 1 GeV/nucleon kinetic energy impinging on a thick Fe target were measured resulting in distributions differential in neutron angle (0° 50 MeV). The data serve in radiation protection planning for next-generation rare-isotope beam facilities. The experimental data are contrasted with predictions from transport codes as currently used in radiation shield design studies.

Inelastic scattering of loosely bound nuclei by Coulomb interaction at intermediate energies (400?600 MeV/nucleon) has been utilized as a spectroscopic tool for exotic nuclei. The observed electromagnetic dipole (E1) strength above the one neutron threshold of neutron-rich C, Be, B and O isotopes can be explained by a non-resonant transition of a neutron into the continuum. The shape of these strength distributions reflects properties of the wavefunction of the released neutron in the nucleus and hence ground-state properties of these isotopes. Neutron capture cross-sections such as for the 14C(n,?) 15C reaction which are of astrophysical relevance can be deduced indirectly.

Single-neutron transfer reactions have been measured on two N = 50 isotones at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF). The single-particle-like states of 83Ge and 85Se have been populated using radioactive ion beams of 82Ge and 84Se and the (d, p) reaction in inverse kinematics. The properties of the lowest-lying states —including excitation energies, orbital angular momenta, and spectroscopic factors— have been determined for these N = 51 nuclei.

The ground-state structure of the near-drip-line nucleus 23O has been investigated in a one-neutron Coulomb breakup reaction. Differential cross sections d σ / d E * for electromagnetic excitation of 23O projectiles (422 MeV/nucleon) incident on a lead target have been obtained from the measurement of the momenta of all breakup products including γ rays. The analysis of the deduced dipole-transition probability into the continuum infers a 2 s 1 / 2 ⊗ O 22 ( 0 + ) ground state configuration with a spectroscopic factor of 0.77(10) and thus a ground-state spin I π ( O 23 ) = 1 / 2 + , resolving earlier conflicting experimental findings. Final-state interaction is of significant influence, an effective reduced scattering length for low-energy p 3 / 2 neutron scattering could be derived from the data.

The study of neutron single-particle strengths in neutron-rich nuclei is of interest for nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics. The distribution of single-particle strengths constrains the effective Hamiltonian and pairing interactions and determines neutron interaction rates that are crucial for understanding the synthesis of heavy nuclei in supernovae via the rapid neutron capture process. Particularly important are the neutron single-particle levels in nuclei near closed neutron shells. Radioactive ion beams from the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility have been used to study (d,p) reactions in inverse kinematics in order to probe neutron single-particle states in exotic nuclei. The results of a measurement with a 82 Ge beam will be presented.

Aims Diabetes increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Only part of this excess risk is explained by diabetes-associated hypertension, obesity, and lipid disorders. Poor glycaemic control may help explain the residual CVD risk. The aim of this study was to determine whether variations in glycaemic control are associated with CVD risk in diabetic individuals. Methods We examined longitudinal data from the Strong Heart Study, a population-based study of CVD and its risk factors among American Indians (a population with a high prevalence of diabetes). Diabetes was defined using the 1998 World Health Organization criteria: fasting plasma glucose ≥ 126 mg/dl or 2-h plasma glucose ≥ 200 mg/dl. American Diabetes Association guidelines for glycaemic control were used: good, A1c
