Abstract

The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 2,143 new measurements from 709 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 120 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including a new review on Machine Learning, and one on Spectroscopy of Light Meson Resonances. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 97 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 23 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. A Particle Physics Booklet with the Summary Tables and essential tables, figures, and equations from selected review articles is available in print, as a web version optimized for use on phones, and as an Android app.

Abstract

A pilot project to assess the feasibility of using epidural analgesia for labour was undertaken in an Armed Forces hospital. Effectiveness of the technique, acceptability by patients and nursing staff was assessed. Forty parturients were offered labour analgesia after explaining the procedure. A single-use 16 G Romson epidural catheter was placed in L2-3 or L3-4 space. Injection bupivacaine (0.25%) 10-14 mL was used as an initial dose. An hourly dose of 0.125% bupivacaine (10-12 mL) was given till the onset of second stage. Good to excellent analgesia during first stage was experienced by 34 patients. Marginal second stage prolongation was noticed but without any adverse neonatal effects. Analgesia was unsatisfactory during second stage in 25% patients. Instrumental delivery was required in 17% patients (LSCS - 10% and vacuum extraction - 7%). Procedure was accepted very well by 37 patients and they were satisfied with the pain relief.

Abstract

We suggest two methods (based on flavor SU(3) symmetry) to determine the CKM angle $\gamma$ using the decays $B_d$, $B^+ \to K \eta (\eta')$ and $B_s \to \pi \eta (\eta')$, respectively. Rescattering effects are partly included -- we neglect annihilation amplitudes, but do not assume any other relation between the SU(3) invariant amplitudes. We use the fact that the amplitude (including the Electroweak Penguin contribution) for $B_d$, $B^+ \to \pi K$ with final state $I (isospin) =3/2$ is known as a function of $\gamma$ from the decay rate $B^+ \to \pi^0 \pi^+$.

10. A Scientific Description of Pt Adsorption onto Alumina

Abstract

The physical adsorption theory of James and Healy [1] has been revised with a non-Nernstian treatment of surface potential including a balance to account for proton transfer between the liquid phase and surface [2], and the solvation energy term of Levine [3]. Using model parameters measured independently, six sets of CPA adsorption data over alumina have been simulated to a reasonable degree with no parameter adjustment. In addition, experiments using aluminas of different phase, solubility and surface area have been conducted to discriminate between a physical adsorption mechanism and several other prevailing adsorption theories. The experimental results further support the revised physical adsorption (RPA) model. The RPA model is readily applicable to other systems.

12. Common origin for neutrino anarchy and charged hierarchies.

Abstract

The generation of exponential flavor hierarchies from extra-dimensional wave function overlaps is reexamined. We find, surprisingly, that the coexistence of anarchic fermion mass matrices with such hierarchies is intrinsic and natural to this setting. The salient features of charged fermion and neutrino masses and mixings can thereby be captured within a single framework. Both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos can be realized. Implications for a variety of weak-scale scenarios, including warped compactification and supersymmetry, are discussed. When the new weak-scale physics is sensitive to the origin of flavor structure, Dirac neutrinos are preferred.

13. Top compositeness and precision unification.

Abstract

The evolution of standard model gauge couplings is studied in a nonsupersymmetric scenario in which the hierarchy problem is resolved by Higgs compositeness above the weak scale. It is argued that massiveness of the top quark combined with precision tests of the bottom quark imply that the right-handed top must also be composite. If, further, the standard model gauge symmetry is embedded into a simple subgroup of the unbroken composite-sector flavor symmetry, then precision coupling unification is shown to occur at approximately 10(15) GeV, to a degree comparable to supersymmetric unification.

14. Warped unification, proton stability, and dark matter.

Abstract

We show that solving the problem of baryon-number violation in nonsupersymmetric grand unified theories (GUT's) in warped higher-dimensional spacetime can lead to a stable Kaluza-Klein particle. This exotic particle has gauge quantum numbers of a right-handed neutrino, but carries fractional baryon number and is related to the top quark within the higher-dimensional GUT. A combination of baryon number and SU(3) color ensures its stability. Its relic density can easily be of the right value for masses in the 10 GeV-few TeV range. An exciting aspect of these models is that the entire parameter space will be tested at near future dark matter direct detection experiments. Other exotic GUT partners of the top quark are also light and can be produced at high energy colliders with distinctive signatures.

15. B-factory signals for a warped extra dimension.

Abstract

We study predictions for B physics in a class of warped extra dimension models recently introduced, where few ( approximately 3) TeV Kaluza-Klein masses are consistent with electroweak data due to custodial symmetry. As in the standard model (SM), flavor violations arise due to the heavy top quark leading to striking signals: (i) New physics contributions to DeltaF=2 transitions are comparable to the SM, so the success of the SM unitarity triangle fit is a "coincidence." Thus, clean extractions of unitarity angles are likely to be affected, in addition to O(1) deviation from the SM prediction in B(s) mixing. (ii) O(1) deviation from various SM predictions for B-->X(s)l(+)l(-). (iii) Large mixing-induced CP asymmetry in radiative B decays. Also, the neutron electric dipole moment is roughly 20 times larger than the current bound so that this framework has a "CP problem."
