Search

The XENON100 experiment, in operation at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy, was designed to search for evidence of dark matter interactions inside a volume of liquid xenon using a dual-phase time projection chamber. This paper describes the Slow Control System (SCS) of the experiment with emphasis on the distributed architecture as well as on its modular and expandable nature. The system software was designed according to the rules of Object-Oriented Programming and coded in Java, thus promoting code reusability and maximum flexibility during commissioning of the experiment. The SCS has been continuously monitoring the XENON100 detector since mid 2008, remotely recording hundreds of parameters on a few dozen instruments in real time, and setting emergency alarms for the most important variables., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We present results from the direct search for dark matter with the XENON100 detector, installed underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of INFN, Italy. XENON100 is a two-phase time projection chamber with a 62 kg liquid xenon target. Interaction vertex reconstruction in three dimensions with millimeter precision allows to select only the innermost 48 kg as ultra-low background fiducial target. In 100.9 live days of data, acquired between January and June 2010, no evidence for dark matter is found. Three candidate events were observed in a pre-defined signal region with an expected background of 1.8 +/- 0.6 events. This leads to the most stringent limit on dark matter interactions today, excluding spin-independent elastic WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-sections above 7.0x10^-45 cm^2 for a WIMP mass of 50 GeV/c^2 at 90% confidence level., 5 pages, 5 figures; matches accepted version

Schottky CdTe detectors are good candidates for large pixel array imagers. For use of such arrays in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) the coincidence timing of the detectors is very important, since it reduces the background from random coincidences. The coincidence timing of a small 2×2×1 mm 3 detector has been measured as 11.6 ns, and thus is not much worse than the timing of BGO scintillators, commonly used in PET.

A CdTe detector with Schottky contacts has been tested with special emphasis on the requirements for imaging arrays. The detector can withstand a much higher field strength than conventional CdTe detectors with two ohmic contacts. The higher field strength results in complete charge collection, including the holes which are a factor of 10 slower than the electrons. With moderate cooling to −20°C and a field strength around 10 kV/cm, the detectors are homogeneous, i.e. the signal response is independent of the interaction location of the γ-rays. The measured spectra show symmetric full energy peaks with no tailing to the low-energy side. Polarization effects at room temperature disappear below 0°C. The detectors are well suited for large imaging arrays in applications such as hard X-ray astrophysics and medical imaging.

We have measured the energy dependence of the liquid xenon (LXe) scintillation yield of electrons with energy between 2.1 and 120.2keV, using the Compton coincidence technique. A LXe scintillation detector with a very high light detection efficiency was irradiated with 137Cs {\gamma} rays and the energy of the Compton-scattered {\gamma} rays was measured with a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector placed at different scattering angles. The excellent energy resolution of the HPGe detector allows the selection of events with Compton electrons of known energy in the LXe detector. We find that the scintillation yield initially increases as the electron energy decreases from 120 keV to about 60keV but then decreases by about 30% from 60keV to 2keV. The measured scintillation yield was also measured with conversion electrons from the 32.1 keV and 9.4 keV transitions of the 83mKr isomer, used as an internal calibration source. We find that the scintillation yield of the 32.1 keV transition is compatible with that obtained from the Compton coincidence measurement. On the other hand, the yield for the 9.4keV transition is much higher than that measured for a Compton electron of the same energy. We interpret the enhancement in the scintillation yield as due to the enhanced recombination rate in the presence of Xe ions left from the 32.1 keV transition, which precedes the 9.4 keV one by 220 ns, on average., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Vacuum ultraviolet light sensitive photomultiplier tubes directly coupled to liquid xenon are being used to efficiently detect the 178 nm scintillation light in a variety of liquid xenon based particle detectors. Good knowledge of the performance of these photomultipliers under cryogenic conditions is needed to properly characterize these detectors. Here, we report on measurements of the quantum efficiency of Hamamatsu R8520 photomultipliers, used in the XENON Dark Matter Experiments. The quantum efficiency measurements at room temperature agree with the values provided by Hamamatsu. At low temperatures, between 160K and 170K, the quantum efficiency increases by $\sim5-11$% relative to the room temperature values.

Many experiments that aim at the direct detection of Dark Matter are able to distinguish a dominant background from the expected feeble signals, based on some measured discrimination parameter. We develop a statistical model for such experiments using the Profile Likelihood ratio as a test statistic in a frequentist approach. We take data from calibrations as control measurements for signal and background, and the method allows the inclusion of data from Monte Carlo simulations. Systematic detector uncertainties, such as uncertainties in the energy scale, as well as astrophysical uncertainties, are included in the model. The statistical model can be used to either set an exclusion limit or to make a discovery claim, and the results are derived with a proper treatment of statistical and systematic uncertainties. We apply the model to the first data release of the XENON100 experiment, which allows to extract additional information from the data, and place stronger limits on the spin-independent elastic WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-section. In particular, we derive a single limit, including all relevant systematic uncertainties, with a minimum of 2.4x10^-44 cm^2 for WIMPs with a mass of 50 GeV/c^2., 8 pages, 6 figures, matches accepted version

Liquid-xenon based particle detectors have been dramatically growing in size during the last years, and are now exceeding the one-ton scale. The required high xenon purity is usually achieved by continuous recirculation of xenon gas through a high-temperature getter. This challenges the traditional way of cooling these large detectors, since in a thermally well insulated detector, most of the cooling power is spent to compensate losses from recirculation. The phase change during recondensing requires five times more cooling power than cooling the gas from ambient temperature to -100C (173 K). Thus, to reduce the cooling power requirements for large detectors, we propose to use the heat from the purified incoming gas to evaporate the outgoing xenon gas, by means of a heat exchanger. Generally, a heat exchanger would appear to be only of very limited use, since evaporation and liquefaction occur at zero temperature difference. However, the use of a recirculation pump reduces the pressure of the extracted liquid, forces it to evaporate, and thus cools it down. We show that this temperature difference can be used for an efficient heat exchange process. We investigate the use of a commercial parallel plate heat exchanger with a small liquid xenon detector. Although we expected to be limited by the available cooling power to flow rates of about 2 SLPM, rates in excess of 12 SLPM can easily be sustained, limited only by the pump speed and the impedance of the flow loop. The heat exchanger operates with an efficiency of (96.8 +/- 0.5)%. This opens the possibility for fast xenon gas recirculation in large-scale experiments, while minimizing thermal losses., 10 pages, 3 figures

The XENON100 experiment, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), aims to directly detect dark matter in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) via their elastic scattering off xenon nuclei. We present a comprehensive study of the predicted electronic recoil background coming from radioactive decays inside the detector and shield materials, and intrinsic contamination. Based on GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulations using a detailed geometry together with the measured radioactivity of all detector components, we predict an electronic recoil background in the WIMP-search energy range (0-100 keV) in the 30 kg fiducial mass of less than 10e-2 events/(kg-day-keV), consistent with the experiment's design goal. The isomer 83mKr with its half-life of 1.83 h is an ideal calibration source for a liquid noble gas dark matter experiment like the XENON project. However, the risk of contamination of the detector with traces of the much longer lived mother isotop 83Rb (86.2 d half-life) has to be ruled out. In this work the release of 83Rb atoms from a 1.8 MBq 83Rb source embedded in zeolite beads has been investigated. To do so, a cryogenic trap has been connected to the source for about 10 days, after which it was removed and probed for the strongest 83Rb gamma-rays with an ultra-sensitive Germanium detector. No signal has been found. The corresponding upper limit on the released 83Rb activity means that the investigated type of source can be used in the XENON project and similar low-background experiments as 83mKr generator without a significant risk of contaminating the detector. The measurements also allow to set upper limits on the possible release of the isotopes 84Rb and 86Rb, traces of which were created alongside the production of 83Rb at the Rez cyclotron., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Journal of Instrumentation

The XENON100 experiment, in operation at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, is designed to search for dark matter WIMPs scattering off 62 kg of liquid xenon in an ultra-low background dual-phase time projection chamber. In this letter, we present first dark matter results from the analysis of 11.17 live days of non-blind data, acquired in October and November 2009. In the selected fiducial target of 40 kg, and within the pre-defined signal region, we observe no events and hence exclude spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering cross-sections above 3.4 x 10^-44 cm^2 for 55 GeV/c^2 WIMPs at 90% confidence level. Below 20 GeV/c^2, this result constrains the interpretation of the CoGeNT and DAMA signals as being due to spin-independent, elastic, light mass WIMP interactions., 5 pages, 5 figures. Liquid xenon is an important detection medium in direct dark matter experiments, which search for low-energy nuclear recoils produced by the elastic scattering of WIMPs with quarks. The two existing measurements of the relative scintillation efficiency of nuclear recoils below 20 keV lead to inconsistent extrapolations at lower energies. This results in a different energy scale and thus sensitivity reach of liquid xenon dark matter detectors. We report a new measurement of the relative scintillation efficiency below 10 keV performed with a liquid xenon scintillation detector, optimized for maximum light collection. Greater than 95% of the interior surface of this detector was instrumented with photomultiplier tubes, giving a scintillation yield of 19.6 photoelectrons/keV electron equivalent for 122 keV gamma rays. We find that the relative scintillation efficiency for nuclear recoils of 5 keV is 0.14, staying constant around this value up to 10 keV. For higher energy recoils we measure a value around 20%, consistent with previously reported data. In light of this new measurement, the XENON10 experiment's results on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section, which were calculated assuming a constant 0.19 relative scintillation efficiency, change from $8.8\times10^{-44}$ cm$^2$ to $9.9\times10^{-44}$ cm$^2$ for WIMPs of mass 100 GeV/c$^2$, and from $4.4\times10^{-44}$ cm$^2$ to $5.6\times10^{-44}$ cm$^2$ for WIMPs of mass 30 GeV/c$^2$., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

XENON10 is an experiment to directly detect weakly interacting massive particle (WIMPs), which may comprise the bulk of the non-baryonic dark matter in our Universe. We report new results for spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon interactions with 129-Xe and 131-Xe from 58.6 live-days of operation at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). Based on the non-observation of a WIMP signal in 5.4 kg of fiducial liquid xenon mass, we exclude previously unexplored regions in the theoretically allowed parameter space for neutralinos. We also exclude a heavy Majorana neutrino with a mass in the range of 10 GeV -2 TeV as a dark matter candidate under standard assumptions for its density and distribution in the galactic halo., 4 pages, 4 figures; final version published in PRL (added DAMA region to Figure 1)

The XENON100 dark matter experiment uses liquid xenon in a time projection chamber (TPC) to measure xenon nuclear recoils resulting from the scattering of dark matter Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). In this paper, we report the observation of single-electron charge signals which are not related to WIMP interactions. These signals, which show the excellent sensitivity of the detector to small charge signals, are explained as being due to the photoionization of impurities in the liquid xenon and of the metal components inside the TPC. They are used as a unique calibration source to characterize the detector. We explain how we can infer crucial parameters for the XENON100 experiment: the secondary-scintillation gain, the extraction yield from the liquid to the gas phase and the electron drift velocity., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures. A strong anticorrelation between ionization and scintillation signals produced by MeV $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays in liquid xenon has been measured and used to improve the energy resolution by combining the two signals. The improvement is explained by reduced electron-ion recombination fluctuations of the combined signal compared to fluctuations of the individual signals. Simultaneous measurements of ionization and scintillation signals were carried out with $^{137}\mathrm{Cs}$, $^{22}\mathrm{Na}$, and $^{60}\mathrm{Co}$ $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays, as a function of electric field in the liquid. A resolution of $1.7%(\ensuremath{\sigma})$ at $662\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{keV}$ was measured at $1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{kV}∕\mathrm{cm}$, significantly better than the resolution from either scintillation or ionization alone. A detailed analysis indicates that further improvement to less than $1%(\ensuremath{\sigma})$ is possible with higher light collection efficiency and lower electronic noise.

The technique to realize 3D position sensitivity in a two-phase xenon time projection chamber (XeTPC) for dark matter search is described. We report the first measurements of the absolute ionization yield of nuclear recoils in liquid xenon, as a function of energy and electric-field. Independent experiments were carried out with two dual-phase time projection chamber prototypes, developed for the XENON Dark Matter project. We find that the charge yield increases with decreasing recoil energy, and exhibits only a weak field dependence. These results are a first demonstration of the capability of dual phase xenon detectors to discriminate between electron and nuclear recoils, a key requirement for a sensitive dark matter search at recoil energies down to 20 keV.

Scintillation light from gamma ray irradiation in liquid xenon is detected by two Hamamatsu R9288 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) immersed in the liquid. UV light reflector material, PTFE, is used to optimize the light collection efficiency. The detector gives a high light yield of 6 photoelectron per keV (pe/keV), which allows efficient detection of the 122 keV gamma-ray line from Co-57, with a measured energy resolution of (8.8+/-0.6)% (sigma). The best achievable energy resolution, by removing the instrumental fluctuations, from liquid xenon scintillation light is estimated to be around 6-8% (sigma) for gamma-ray with energy between 662 keV and 122 keV.

We report on a search for particle dark matter with the XENON100 experiment, operated at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) for 13 months during 2011 and 2012. XENON100 features an ultra-low electromagnetic background of (5.3 \pm 0.6) \times 10^-3 events (kg day keVee)^-1 in the energy region of interest. A blind analysis of 224.6 live days \times 34 kg exposure has yielded no evidence for dark matter interactions. The two candidate events observed in the pre-defined nuclear recoil energy range of 6.6-30.5 keVnr are consistent with the background expectation of (1.0 \pm 0.2) events. A Profile Likelihood analysis using a 6.6-43.3 keVnr energy range sets the most stringent limit on the spin-independent elastic WIMP-nucleon scattering cross section for WIMP masses above 8 GeV/c^2, with a minimum of 2 \times 10^-45 cm^2 at 55 GeV/c^2 and 90% confidence level., 6 pages, 5 figures. LXeGRIT is a balloon-borne Compton telescope employing a large volume liquid xenon time projection chamber (LXeTPC) as the central gamma-ray detector. It is designed to image gamma rays in the energy range of 200 keV to 20 MeV, with an angular resolution of about 3 degrees (1 sigma) at 2 MeV, within a field-of-view (FOV) of about 1 sr. The detector's energy and three-dimensional spatial resolution as measured during pre-flight calibration experiments, are $\Delta E_\mathrm{lxe}/E=8.8% : \sqrt{1\MeV /E}$ and < 1mm RMS, respectively. The detection efficiency for Compton events varies between 1.5% and 4% depending on energy and event selection. We describe the instrument as flown on May 7, 1999 and review its overall performance at balloon altitude. The launch occurred at 13:26:54 UT from Ft. Sumner, New Mexico and the flight was terminated about 9 hours later. The Crab was in the instrument FOV for a few hours. The Liquid Xenon Gamma-Ray Imaging Telescope (LXeGRIT) is a balloon born experiment sensitive to \g -rays in the energy band of 0.2-20 MeV. The main detector is a time projection chamber filled with high purity liquid xenon (LXeTPC), in which the three-dimensional location and energy deposit of individual \g -ray interactions are accurately measured in one homogeneous volume. To determine the \g -ray initial direction (Compton imaging), as well as to reject background, the correct sequence of interactions has to be determined. Here we report the development and optimization of an algorithm to reconstruct the Compton scattering sequence and show its performance on Monte Carlo events and LXeGRIT data.

LXeGRIT is a balloon-borne Compton telescope based on a liquid xenon time projection chamber (LXeTPC) for imaging cosmic \g-rays in the energy band of 0.2-20 MeV. The detector, with 400 cm$^2$ area and 7 cm drift gap, is filled with high purity LXe. Both ionization and scintillation light signals are detected to measure the energy deposits and the three spatial coordinates of individual \g -ray interactions within the sensitive volume. The TPC has been characterized with repeated measurements of its spectral and Compton imaging response to \g -rays from radioactive sources such as \na, \cs, \yt and Am-Be. The detector shows a linear response to \g -rays in the energy range 511 keV -4.4 MeV, with an energy resolution (FWHM) of $ \Delta E/E=8.8% \: \sqrt{1\MeV /E}$. XENA is a new Compton telescope concept, designed to image about 50% of the gamma-ray sky with a sensitivity that would significantly surpass CGRO/COMPTEL's multi-year sensitivity with a 2 weeks balloon flight from the Southern Hemisphere. The detector, based on liquid xenon time-projection chambers, is optimized for approximately 0.3 - 10 MeV and combines high efficiency within a 3 sr field-of-view with approximately 1 degree(s) angular resolution and excellent background reduction capability. XENA's primary scientific goal is the discovery and mapping of 60Fe radioactivity from the Galaxy, which is pivotal for understanding nucleosynthesis. XENA will detect 60Fe even if current predictions are 7X overestimated. At 1.8 MeV, XENA's sensitivity (6 10-6 cm-2 s-1) will significantly refine the COMPTEL 26Al mapping along the Southern Milky Way. Also, XENA would be the first instrument capable to decide whether the 3 - 7 MeV excess seen in Orion is indeed due to nuclear lines from 12C and 16O, and it could discover the predicted lower-energy lines. The scanned sky area includes many continuum (gamma) -ray sources as well, such as pulsars and numerous (gamma) -ray AGNs. Recently developed CdTe detectors with a Schottky anode contact are well suited for (gamma) -ray imaging applications in astrophysics and nuclear medicine. Since the response of the detectors to (gamma) -rays is homogeneous throughout their volume the detectors can be oriented to let the radiation enter perpendicular to the electric field. Thus, large area arrays with 10 mm thickness can be assembled. The leakage current and capacitance of the detectors is sufficiently low to connect more than a hundred together in a row-column read out reducing the number of electronic channels.

The large area muon detector for the UA1-experiment at the CERN p p-collider consists of simple and robust 4 m × 6 drift chamber modules, which are constructed of extruded aluminium profiles. Electrical field calculations show that a saturated drift velocity can be achieved up to a drift length of 7 cm with only three additional field shaping electrodes and an optimized tube profile. The field calculations as well as results about the spatial resolution of such a drift tube are presented. The coordinate along the wire can be determined from the time difference of the pulses at both ends of the tube.

In a sample of diffractive events of high multiplicity a sharp five standard deviation signal is observed at M=2255 MeV/c/sup 2/ in the K /sup -/p pi /sup +/ mass distribution and, although with less statistical strength, at the same mass in the lambda /sup 0/ pi /sup + / pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/ channel. These signals are identified as being due to the decay of the charmed baryon Lambda /sub c//sup +/ which is produced with a cross section times branching ratio sigma /sub C/B in the range 0.7-1.8 mu b for the K/sup -/ pi /sup +/p decay and 0.3-0.7 mu b for the Lambda /sup 0/ pi /sup +/ pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/ system. Production of charmed particles has been investigated at √ s = 63 GeV usi ng the Lampshade Magnet detector triggered by electrons and positrons emitted at 30% from the ISR beam axis. The results of a search for Λ c and Λ c signals in the K − pπ + and K + p π − channels are presented. Cross sections for the reactions pp → D Λ c X and pp → Λ c Λ c X, and upper limits. for pp → D D X, are evaluated under various models and compared with other values obtained at the ISR.

Forward particle production in $\mathrm{pp}$ interactions triggered by a 30\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} pion of momentum exceeding 5 GeV/c has been studied at c.m. energy of 63 GeV. Quantum-chromodynamic model calculations show that in a majority of such interactions the incident proton loses a valence quark. Results indicate that hadronization of diquarks is primarily a recombination process leading to the formation of a high-$x$ baryon.

A search was made for nucleon decays which result in multiple delayed muon decays using the HPW water Cerenkov detector. No contained events were found, which is consistent with the expected neutrino background of 0.7±0.2 events. Lower lifetime limits are calculated for eleven proton decay modes and five bound neutron decay modes, ranging from 2×10 30 yr to 1×10 31 yr.

Results from the nuclear recoil calibration of the XENON100 dark matter detector installed underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy are presented. Data from measurements with an external 241AmBe neutron source are compared with a detailed Monte Carlo simulation which is used to extract the energy dependent charge-yield Qy and relative scintillation efficiency Leff. A very good level of absolute spectral matching is achieved in both observable signal channels - scintillation S1 and ionization S2 - along with agreement in the 2-dimensional particle discrimination space. The results confirm the validity of the derived signal acceptance in earlier reported dark matter searches of the XENON100 experiment., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures. Matches version accepted by PRD. We present new experimental constraints on the elastic, spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross section using recent data from the XENON100 experiment, operated in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. An analysis of 224.6 live days x 34 kg of exposure acquired during 2011 and 2012 revealed no excess signal due to axial-vector WIMP interactions with 129-Xe and 131-Xe nuclei. This leads to the most stringent upper limits on WIMP-neutron cross sections for WIMP masses above 6 GeV, with a minimum cross section of 3.5 x 10^{-40} cm^2 at a WIMP mass of 45 GeV, at 90% confidence level., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; corrected caption of figure 3

The XENON100 experiment has recently completed a dark matter run with 100.9 live-days of data, taken from January to June 2010. Events in a 48kg fiducial volume in the energy range between 8.4 and 44.6 keVnr have been analyzed. A total of three events have been found in the predefined signal region, compatible with the background prediction of (1.8 \pm 0.6) events. Based on this analysis we present limits on the WIMP-nucleon cross section for inelastic dark matter. With the present data we are able to rule out the explanation for the observed DAMA/LIBRA modulation as being due to inelastic dark matter scattering off iodine at a 90% confidence level., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures
