Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted communication appears as one of the potential enablers for sixth generation (6G) wireless networks by providing a new degree of freedom in the system design to telecom operators. Particularly, RIS-empowered millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems can be a remedy to provide broadband and ubiquitous connectivity. This paper aims to fill an important gap in the open literature by providing a physical, accurate, open-source, and widely applicable RIS channel model for mmWave frequencies. Our model is not only applicable in various indoor and outdoor environments but also includes the physical characteristics of wireless propagation in the presence of RISs by considering 5G radio channel conditions. Various deployment scenarios are presented for RISs and useful insights are provided for system designers from the perspective of potential RIS use-cases and their efficient positioning. The scenarios in which the use of an RIS makes a big difference or might not have a big impact on the communication system performance, are revealed. The open-source and comprehensive SimRIS Channel Simulator is also introduced in this paper., Comment: to appear in IEEE Transactions on Communications, code packages are available at https://corelab.ku.edu.tr/tools/SimRIS/ -arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2006.00468

BACKGROUND: Corrosive esophageal burns, particularly common in developing countries, lead to different problems in different age groups. The ingestion of corrosive substances can cause such problems as stricture of the esophagus, to acute perforation, and even death. Because stricture formation is related to the severity of the initial injury, the prevention of stricture constitutes a main goal of treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective and anti-inflammatory effects of garlic (Allium sativum) oil in corrosive esophageal burn. METHODS: Twenty-eight rats were randomly divided into 4 equal groups: group 1 (sham), group 2 (control), group 3 (topical treatment), and group 4 (topical and systemic treatment). In groups 2, 3, and 4, corrosive esophageal burns were generated by applying sodium hydroxide to a 1.5-cm segment of the abdominal esophagus. Normal saline was applied to group 2, topical garlic oil to group 3, and topical and systemic garlic oil were used in group 4. RESULTS: The level of hydroxyproline was lower in the topical treatment groups than in the control group (p=0.023). There was difference in tumor necrosis factor alpha level between the systemic treatment groups and the control group (p=0.044). Treatment with garlic oil decreased stenosis index (SI) and histopathological damage score (HDS) in corrosive esophageal burn rats. The SI in the topical treatment group was significantly lower than that of the control group (p=0.016). The HDS was significantly lower in group 4 when compared with the control group (p=0.019). CONCLUSION: Garlic oil is an effective agent in promoting the regression of esophageal stenosis and tissue damage caused by corrosive burns. While the protective effect of garlic oil on tissue damage is more significant when applied topically, the anti-inflammatory effect is more pronounced when applied systemically. Therefore, we believe that the application of garlic oil in patients with corrosive esophageal burns can reduce complication rates. © 2017 TJTES.

- Abstract
I investigated effects of vitamin C and E (VCE) combination supplementation on lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK) activities, and free testosterone, cortisol and hematological values in blood of forced training of basketball players. Blood was obtained from 14 male basketball players pre-game (Group A), post-game (group B) and after 35 days on vitamin C (500 mg) and E (150 mg, VCE)/ 24 h orally) supplementation pre (Group C) and post-training (Group D). The anticoagulated blood and serum samples were obtained from all subjects. Cortisol levels were lower in forced training subjects than in control subjects, whereas there was a significant increase serum CK levels, free testosterone levels and free testosterone/cortisol ratio. Decreased cortisol values were mostly increased by exercise plus VCE supplementation although serum CK levels, free testosterone levels and free testosterone/cortisol ratio were decreased by exercise plus the VCE supplementation. There were no significant changes in white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets counts and hemoglobin and hematocrit values in the four groups. In conclusion, these data demonstrated an increase in the CK in the serum of forced training whereas there is a decrease in the free testosterone, cortisol and their ratio. However, supplementation of VCE might partially modulate for the hormonal and enzymatic stress marker profile due to strengthen the antioxidant defense system by decreasing ROS. Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
One of the main application fields of nuclear technology is medicine and radioisotopes are used in medicine. Production of those radioisotopes is important and in the production processes the cross section must be known. All the production of radioisotope used in medicine is based on the nuclear reactions means they are not natural. The decay time of produced radioisotopes is important as from production to hospital can take time and thus generally generator is used to produce some radioisotopes. Radioisotopes are widely produced in reactors or cyclotron type accelerator. Type of radioisotopes direct way to be used in production processes. Thus obtaining of cross section becomes crucial. For this purposes the theoretical calculation cross section of some radioisotopes used in medicine will be calculated in this study. The calculations will be done using Monte Carlo code of TALYS 1.6

- Abstract
Introduction: Bloom syndrome (BS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by a loss-of-function mutation in the BLM gene encoding an RecQ helicase involved in DNA repair and maintenance of chromosomal stability. In patients with BS, significant sensitivity to both DNA-damaging chemotherapy (CT) and ionizing radiation complicates the management of neoplasms by exacerbating comorbidities and predisposing to toxicities and poor outcomes., Case Report: A 30-year-old female patient diagnosed with BS who presented with early-stage triple-negative breast cancer was treated with four cycles of doxorubicin (60 mg/m
2 ) and cyclophosphamide (600 mg/m2 ) followed by weekly paclitaxel (80 mg/m2 ) for 12 weeks as the chemotherapy protocol and a total of 5000 cGy curative radiotherapy (RT). Due to pancytopenia 8 months after completion of therapy, bone marrow biopsy and aspiration were performed, and a diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome with excess blasts 2 (MDS-EB2) was made. Two courses of the azacitidine (75 mg/m2 ) protocol were administered every 28 days in the hematology clinic. Two weeks after CT the patient was transferred from the emergency department to the hematology clinic with the diagnosis of pancytopenia and febrile neutropenia. She died at the age of 33 due to sepsis that developed during follow-up., Conclusion: Due to the rarity of BS, there is no prospective trial in patients with cancer and no evidence base upon which to design treatment programs. For these reasons, it is strongly recommended that patients receive multidisciplinary care, with precise assessment and discussion of the indication and an adequate dose of DNA-damaging agents such as chemotherapy and ionizing radiation., (© 2024. - Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between patients with and without extraglandular involvement in Sjögren's syndrome (SS) by analyzing ANA (antinuclear antibody) and ENA (extractable nuclear antigen) results and minor salivary gland pathology findings., Patients and Methods: A total of 265 (245 females; 20 males; mean age: 50.4±12.4; range, 19 to 79 years) patients diagnosed with SS were included in the retrospective cohort study between March 1, 2011, and December 1, 2021. Detailed documentation was performed, capturing demographic characteristics, clinical information, laboratory findings, medication usage, and manifestations of the syndrome. The patients were divided into two groups, with (78 females; 8 males; mean age: 52.7±11.5; range, 22 to 78 years or without (167 females; 12 males; mean age: 49.3±12.8; range, 19 to 79 years extraglandular involvement., Results: The mean follow-up duration was 63.1±31.9 months. Extraganular involvement, including joint involvement, lung involvement, central nervous system involvement, hematological involvement, hepatitis, and lymphoma, was observed in 32.5% of the patients. Patients with extraglandular involvement required multiple medications, while those with only glandular involvement predominantly used hydroxychloroquine. The mean duration from SS diagnosis to extraglandular involvement was 15.2±27.8 months. The comparison between patients with and without extraglandular involvement revealed a significant association between higher focus scores (FS) and extraglandular manifestations. However, no significant differences were observed in terms of ANA positivity, ANA titers, or ENA positivity. Regression analysis indicated that age and FS were linked to systemic involvement., Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of FS as a predictive indicator for extraglandular manifestations in SS. Advanced age was found to be associated with an increased likelihood of extraglandular involvement. Assessing FS and age can aid in predicting extraglandular manifestations., Competing Interests: Conflict of Interest: The authors declared no conflicts of interest with respect to the authorship and/or publication of this article., (Copyright © 2024, Turkish League Against Rheumatism.)

- Abstract
In recent years, the incidence and drug resistance of Candida parapsilosis have increased. Our study aimed to determine the antifungal sensitivity of C. parapsilosis and the clinical and demographic characteristics of children with candidemia. Two hundred pediatric patients with C. parapsilosis candidemia were included in the study between 1 January 2010 and 1 August 2023. Clinical samples were evaluated on a BACTEC-FX-40 automatic blood culture device (Becton Dickinson, USA). Yeast isolates were identified to the species level via identification cards (YST) using the VITEK 2 Compact (bioMeriéux, France) system. Antifungal susceptibility was performed using antifungal cell cards (AST-YST01). Approval for the study was received from the "University Faculty of Medicine" Hospital Clinical Research Ethics Committee. Non-catheter candidemia was detected in 127 (63.5%) patients, and catheter-related candidemia was detected in 73 (36.5%) patients. It was observed that the patients' history of malignancy, mechanical ventilation, urinary catheter, nasogastric tube, and intensive care unit stay was associated with C. parapsilosis mortality. The mortality rate from candidemia was 9.5%. The most frequently preferred antifungal agents were amphotericin B and fluconazole. The fluconazole drug resistance rate was found to be 6%, and the amphotericin B drug resistance rate was 4%. Because C. parapsilosis candidemia mortality rates can be high depending on risk factors and clinical characteristics, it is important to initiate appropriate and timely antifungal therapy. We think that our study can provide important information about the clinical profiles, distributions, susceptibility profiles, and control of antifungal resistance of C. parapsilosis isolates., Importance: It has been observed that the frequency and antifungal resistance of Candida parapsilosis have increased recently. In our study, we aimed to determine the antifungal sensitivity of C. parapsilosis and the clinical and demographic characteristics of children with candidemia. It was observed that the patients' history of malignancy, mechanical ventilation, urinary catheter, nasogastric tube, and intensive care stay was associated with C. parapsilosis mortality. The mortality rate from candidemia was 9.5%. The most frequently preferred antifungal agents were amphotericin B and fluconazole. - Abstract
Objective: The possible relationships between the histopathological findings of carotid body tumors and age, gender, tumor diameter, and Shamblin classification were investigated. In addition, preoperative embolization status, development of neurological complications, need for vascular reconstruction, hemoglobin change, and discharge time were examined and the effects of these variables on each other were analyzed., Methods: Between 2008 and 2022, 46 cases who underwent carotid body tumor excision were examined retrospectively. The cases were followed for an average of 81 months postoperatively. Histopathological materials were reexamined and the effect of categorical variables was analyzed., Results: Mean tumor diameter was 3.55 ± 1.26 cm, mean discharge time was 3.91 ± 2.37 days, and mean hemoglobin change was 1.86 ± 1.25. Neurological complications developed in 13% of cases. The amount of hemoglobin change was significantly ( p = 0.003) higher in those who developed neurological complications, whereas the tumor diameter and discharge time were found to be insignificantly higher. Surgical complications requiring vascular repair occurred in 10.8% of cases. Tumor diameter ( p = 0.017) and hemoglobin change ( p = 0.046) were significantly higher in these patients. There were significant correlations between higher Shamblin classification and tumor diameter, discharge time, postoperative hemoglobin value, and number of surgical and neurological complications. No significant difference was found between K
i -67, capsular invasion, mitosis, pleomorphism, prominent nucleoli, mean island diameter, and tendency of islands to merge with categorical variables., Conclusion: As the tumor diameter increases, the operation becomes more difficult and the postoperative complication rate increases. We think that subadventitial and capsular removal of the tumor is effective in preventing recurrence. To reach a histopathological conclusion, a larger series of studies including tumors with high Ki -67 and mitosis rates, large size, and one or more of the criteria for necrosis are needed., Competing Interests: None declared., (Thieme. - Abstract
Introduction: Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune disease primarily affecting the oral mucosa., Objectives: This study aimed to determine the demographic, clinical and treatment characteristics of PV patients with oral mucosal involvement and to assess the impact on their quality of life., Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study among 106 patients diagnosed with PV and presenting oral mucosal involvement. Demographic data, clinical and treatment characteristics, and quality of life questionnaires were recorded., Results: The study included 106 patients, 55 (51.89%) were male and there was a predominance of the mucocutaneous subtype in 83 individuals (78.38%). Oral mucosa was the initial site of manifestation in 44 patients (41.51%). Bilateral buccal mucosa was the most frequently affected site. The predominant symptom reported was a burning sensation, noted in 91 patients (85.85%). Oral mucosal examination revealed erosions in 85.85% of the patients. Systemic steroids were the most commonly administered treatment, and rituximab was used in 18 patients (16.98%). A positive and significant correlation was found between pemphigus severity and Oral Health Impact Profile-14, Dermatology Life Quality Index and Dermatological Quality of Life Scale scores (P < 0.05). The presence of superficial ulcers, flaccid bullae, lesion diameter ≥1 cm, and >10 lesions were factors that markedly diminished quality of life. Complete response to treatment was noted in all patients administered rituximab., Conclusions: The most common area of involvement was bilateral buccal mucosa, and the severity of PV closely correlated with a decline in quality of life measures. These results highlight the need for careful clinical oversight of PV, taking into account its effects on patients quality of life.

Introduction . This study aims to review the morphological and immunohistochemical features of testicular tumors and compare them with prognostic parameters. Methods . Testicular tumors diagnosed between January 2011 and September 2021 were reviewed. Patient age, tumor subtype, size, spread, lateralization, number of foci, and immunohistochemical results were recorded. Results . A total of 121 tumors were detected, of which 108 (89%) were germ cell tumors (GCTs). Of the germ cell tumors, 70 (65%) were found to be pure type, and 38 (35%) were mixed germ cell tumors. The ratio of pure seminoma among GCTs was 56/108 (52%). Lymphatic/vascular invasion (LVI) was detected in 48/121 (40%), rete testis invasion in 32/121 (26%), hilar soft tissue invasion in 10/121 (8%), epididymal invasion in 5/121 (4%), and spermatic cord invasion in 5/121 (4%) patients. Lymphatic/vascular invasion was observed in 6 (22%) of 27 germ cell tumors smaller than 3 cm in size, and rete testis invasion was observed in 2 (7%), while in 40 (55%) of the 73 germ cell tumors of 3 cm and above, lymphatic/vascular invasion was seen, and 26 (36%) of them had rete testis invasion. Immunohistochemical results contributed significantly to the determination of tumor components and rates, especially in mixed germ cell tumors. Conclusion . Most of the tumors were germ cell tumors, and the majority were seminomas. Lymphatic/vascular invasion and rete testis invasion rates increase as the tumor diameter increases, which is more evident when the 3 cm cut-off value is taken into account ( P < 0.005)., Competing Interests: Declaration of Conflicting InterestsThe author(s) declared no potential conflicts of interest with respect to the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article.

- Abstract
Introduction: Morphea localized scleroderma (LS) is a rare skin disease with unknown pathogenesis, which causes sclerosis of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue., Objectives: It was aimed to compare the characteristics of patients with pediatric and adult-onset morphea., Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on the records of 183 adult morphea patients. The demographics, clinical and laboratory characteristics, and treatment options of the patients were recorded. Adult patients with morphea over the age of 18 were divided into two groups according to the age of onset and compared., Results: Twenty-two percent (N = 41) of the patients had pediatric-onset morphea (POLS) and 77.6% (n=142) had adult-onset morphea (AOLS). While POLS had a higher head-neck involvement, AOLS had a higher breast involvement (P < 0.001 and P = 0.043). Patients with linear morphea were younger, and more frequently had at least one laboratory anomaly (P = 0.016 versus 0.024). Anti-dsDNA positivity and low hemoglobin (Hb) were observed more frequently in patients with breast involvement. Patients with inguinal involvement, on the other hand, had lower Hb and a higher rate of diabetes, and those patients were older (P = 0.042, 0.040, and 0.012, respectively)., Conclusions: Clinical characteristics and accompanying laboratory anomalies of the patients with morphea depend on the age of onset, involvement areas and the types of morphea, having such data readily available should guide the holistic approach for, and the monitoring process of, the disease.

Background: Percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) is a minimally invasive temporary treatment for patients with acute cholecys-titis (AC) who are at high risk for surgery. The aim of this study was to compare the characteristics of patients with AC treated with PC before and during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID 19) pandemic., Methods: The data of patients who underwent PC with the diagnosis of AC between 2019 and 2021 were analyzed by scanning the hospital registry system. During the COVID 19 pandemic period of March 11, 2020, to March 11, 2021, 110 patients with AC were treated with PC. In the pre-pandemic period of March 2019 to March 2020, 99 patients who underwent PC were added to the study as a control group. The data of the 209 patients included in the study were recorded, and descriptive statistical analysis was performed. The patient characteristics of the two groups were compared., Results: Evaluation was made of 209 patients who were diagnosed with AC between March 2019 and March 2021 and could not be operated on due to the high risk of surgery. The average age of the patients was 63.84 years (21-97) in the pandemic period and 68.43 years (31-100) in the pre-pandemic period. The rate of female patients was 45.5% in the pandemic group and 44.5% in the pre-pandemic group. The mean procedure-discharge time was 3.85 days in the pandemic period and 3.34 days pre-pandemic. The American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification (PS) was determined to be 1 or 2 in 56.4% of the pandemic group patients and 3 or 4 in 78.8% of the pre-pandemic group. There was no comorbidity accompanying AC in 45 (40.9%) patients in the pandemic period, and at least one comorbid condition accompanying AC was detected in 77 (77.8%) patients in the pre-pandemic period. The severity grading for AC was 2 (moderate) in 97.3% of the patients in the pandemic group and 3 (severe) in 26.3% of the patients in the pre-pandemic group. Of the 110 patients in the pandemic period, 14 were Covid 19 positive or suspected. PC-related mortality was not observed in either group., Conclusion: PC is an effective and safe treatment method that reduced the operating room and intensive care burden during the exacerbation of the COVID 19 pandemic. Therefore, it seems like a logical option to expand the PC indications at times when the number of COVID 19 patients increases.

- Abstract
Background: Not all RAS wild-type metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients experience the same benefit from anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) treatments. Studies have shown that nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), interleukin 8 (IL-8) and transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) may be therapeutic targets for mCRC. The aim of this study was to clarify the prognostic value of NF-κB, HIF-1α, IL-8, and TGF-β expression in patients with left-sided mCRC receiving EGFR inhibitors., Methods: Patients with RAS wild-type, left-sided mCRC treated with anti-EGFR on the first line between September 2013 and April 2022 were included. Immunohistochemical staining for NF-κB, HIF-1α, IL-8 and TGF-β was performed from tumor tissues of 88 patients. Patients were divided into NF-κB, HIF-1α, IL-8 and TGF-β expression positive and negative group, moreover, expression positive group were also divided into two group as expression intensity low and high group. The median follow-up was 25.2 months., Results: Median progression-free survival (PFS) was 8.1 (6-10.2) months in the cetuximab group, 11.3 (8.5-14) months in the panitumumab group (p = 0.09). Median overall survival (OS) was 23.9 (4.3-43.4) months in the cetuximab group, 26.9 (15.9-31.9) months in the panitumumab group (p = 0.8). Cytoplasmic NF-κB expression was present in all patients. The mOS was 19.8 (11-28.6) months in NF-κB expression intensity low group and 36.5 (20.1-52.8) months in high group (p = 0.03). The mOS of the HIF-1α expression negative group was significantly longer compared with expression positive group (p = 0.014). There was no significant difference in IL-8 and TGF-β expression status on mOS and mPFS (for all, p > 0.05). Positive expression of HIF-1α was poor prognostic for mOS in the univariate analysis (HR:2.7, 95% CI 1.18-6.52, p = 0.02) and in multivariate analysis (HR 3.69, 95% CI 1.41-9.6, p = 0.008). High cytoplasmic expression intensity of NF-κB was found to have a good prognostic value for mOS (HR 0.47, 95% CI 0.26-0.85, p = 0.01)., Conclusion: High cytoplasmic expression intensity of NF-κB and negative expression of HIF-1α could be a good prognostic marker for mOS in RAS wild-type left-sided mCRC., (© 2023. Objective: Seborrheic dermatitis is a common papulosquamous skin disease with unknown pathogenesis. The aim of our study was to determine the serum level of 25-hydroxy vitamin D in patients with seborrheic dermatitis SD., Methods: A total of 53 patients and 60 healthy controls were included in the study. Serum vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus, and parathormone levels were measured in the patient and control groups, and a comparison was made between the two groups regarding these parameters., Results: Severe vitamin D deficiency was more frequent among patients with seborrheic dermatitisSD compared to controls (52.8 vs. 25.8%, p=0.003). In patients with severe vitamin D deficiency, seborrheic dermatitis SD was detected more frequently at an early age (p=0048) and in women (p=0.015). No correlation was found between the seborrheic dermatitis skin involvement site and vitamin D level., Conclusion: The fact that vitamin D levels decreased in patients with seborrheic dermatitis SD and patients with severe vitamin D deficiency develop seborrheic dermatitis SD earlier suggests that the low levels of vitamin D are related to seborrheic dermatitis.

- Abstract
Introduction: Acne occurring in adults over the age of 25 years is known as acne tarda or adult acne. Three types of adult acne are recognized: persistent, late-onset, and recurrent acne. Most studies do not compare the characteristics between the three variants. In addition, little is known about adult acne in males. This study describes the epidemiological factors of adult acne and investigates certain triggering factors by sex and different types of adult acne., Methods: A multicenter, prospective, descriptive study was conducted. Patients with adult acne and an acne-free control group were compared regarding medical history, family history, smoking and drinking habits, and dietary factors. In addition, triggering and prognostic factors were investigated by sex and three different types of acne: persistent, late-onset, and recurrent acne., Results: The participants included 944 (88.56%) female and 122 (11.44%) male patients with adult acne, and 709 (73.85%) female and 251 (26.15%) male control patients. The consumption of crackers, chocolate, and pasta was significantly more common in the acne group than in the control group (p = 0.017, 0.002, and 0.040, respectively). Male patients with adult acne had a significantly longer disease duration than female patients with adult acne (p = 0.024). The most common type of acne was recurrent acne, followed by persistent and late-onset acne. Among patients with persistent acne, 14.5% had polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), whereas 12.2% of patients with recurrent acne and 11.1% of patients with late-onset acne had PCOS. Severe acne was more common in the persistent acne type (28.13%). The cheek (59.90%) was the most common involvement area, and stress (55.23%) was the most common triggering factor regardless of sex., Conclusions: Although adult female and male patents with adult acne share similar triggering factors, the involvement areas can differ, which may indicate the additional hormonal etiology of female adult acne. Further epidemiological studies on adult acne in both sexes may illuminate the pathogenesis of the disease, thus making possible the development of new treatment strategies.

- Abstract
Aim: Cardiovascular involvement is common among children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) and can cause shock and death. In this study, we evaluated the early and long-term cardiac effects of MIS-C., Methods: In this observational cohort study, we included all children treated for MIS-C from October 2020 to November 2021 in the Department of Paediatric Infectious Disease at Cukurova University School of Medicine Hospital. The patients underwent serial echocardiographical evaluation during hospitalisation and at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after discharge. The patients were evaluated using Holter monitorisation between 4 and 6 months and using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging at 6 months and thereafter., Results: Twenty-six patients diagnosed with MIS-C and with a median age of 84 months were included. Cardiac involvement was found in 19 (73.1%) patients. At initial echocardiographic evaluation, the mean ejection fraction value of the patients was 56.7% (range: 30-75). Coronary artery dilatation was detected in two (7.7%) patients, and mitral regurgitation persisted in only one patient by month 3. Treatment was started in two (7.7%) patients due to ventricular arrhythmia. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 13 (50%) patients at a median of 6 months (range: 5-9). The cardiac magnetic resonance imaging findings were consistent with possible interstitial fibrosis in two (7.7%) patients., Conclusion: Our results showed that cardiac involvement of patients improved rapidly with treatment, as indicated by previous studies. However, during the 1-year follow-up, frequent extraventricular systole was detected in two patients, one of whom initially did not show cardiac involvement. Moreover, possible interstitial fibrosis was detected in the cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluation of two patients. In particular, we believe that these findings may be useful to evaluate critically ill paediatric patients and patients with severely low EF with cardiac MRI in their follow-up., (© 2023 Paediatrics and Child Health Division (The Royal Australasian College of Physicians).)

Introduction: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, recurrent, and inflammatory skin disease experienced mostly in childhood. Chronicity of the disease, relapses, constant need of regular skin care causes seeking for alternative treatments., Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the complementary and alternative treatments (CAT) used by parents' caregivers in pediatric patients diagnosed with AD, and the association between CAT use and patient characteristics., Materials and Methods: A questionnaire questioning the sociocultural and demographic characteristics of the family, the clinical findings of the patients, their treatments and CAT applications was recorded., Results: Eighty-three patients were included in the study. 68.7% of the patients used at least one type of CAT. Vitamins and oils were the most commonly used CAT (48.8% and 47%, respectively) and 73.3% of the patients using CAT continued normal AD treatment while using CAT. The biggest factor affecting CAT choice was the advice of the immediate circle (75%), and 40.6% of the patients stated that they benefited from the complementary therapy., Conclusions: CAT are widely used in AD. Physicians should know the socio-cultural structure of the region they are in, the CAT used and their side effects, and inform the families.

Background: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common, chronic inflammatory disease with relapses and remissions., Objectives: So we planned to investigate the relationship between SD and metabolic syndrome (Mets)., Methods: 54 patients over 18 years of age without known diabetes mellitus, hypertension, coronary artery disease who were clinically diagnosed with SD in our clinic and 47 healthy controls were included in the study. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated of all participants. Complete blood count, fasting blood sugar (FBG), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) were examined. The relationship between the presence of MetS, disease severity, and duration was investigated., Results: Average age of patients was 35.4 (sd: 12). Average age of controls was 32.9 (sd: 10.7). MetS was detected in 35.2% (n = 19) of the patient group and 10.6% (n = 5) of the control group. The presence of MetS was higher in SD patients than in the control group (p = 0.004). The rate of people with high TG was significantly higher in the SD group than the controls (p = 0.015). HDL level was significantly lower in the patient group (p = 0.050). Systolic and diastolic blood pressure were high in patients (p = 0.016, p = 0.029)., Conclusions: Seborrheic dermatitis should be considered as a MetS marker and the presence of MetS should be examined in this group of patients. This can be helpful for the early diagnosis of a systemic disease complex with numerous complications. Also, treatment of MetS can also improve SD lesions., (© 2022 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

- Abstract
Background: Elevated platelet count (PC), mean platelet volume (MPV), and Platelet Mass Index (PMI) are reported in patients with psoriasis, while platelet activation is associated with psoriasis severity. Available studies examining the relationship between platelet activation markers and psoriasis have mostly focused on psoriasis area severity index. To the best of our knowledge, there is no study examining the relationship between histopathological features of a single psoriatic plaque and platelet activation. The present study examined the relationship between histomorphological findings obtained by morphometric analysis and psoriasis patients' PC, MPV, and PMI values., Materials and Methods: Morphometric analysis was performed on hematoxylin and eosin-stained preparations of skin biopsies to measure minimum suprapapillary epidermis thickness (SPET
min ) and maximum epidermal thickness (ETmax ), maximum suprapapillary keratosis thickness (SPKTmax ), and maximum keratosis thickness (KTmax ). The relationship between PC, MPV, PMI, and morphometric skin biopsy outcomes was evaluated., Results: While an inverse correlation was found between SPETmin and PC and PMI in cases with psoriasis (p values = 0.015 and 0.005, r values = -0.238 and -0.271, respectively), no significant correlation was found between SPETmin and MPV (p value = 0.600, r value = -. 052). On the contrary, no significant correlation was found between SPKTmax, ETmax, and KTmax values and platelet parameters., Conclusion: We assume that an increased risk of platelet activation-related diseases is expected in psoriasis patients displaying histopathological findings of suprapapillary thinning due to increased platelet activation; therefore, it may be beneficial to monitor these patients in terms of such risks., (© 2022 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)- Published

Cystic echinococcosis is a parasitic disease caused by the Echinococcus tapeworm. The disease can often affect organs such as the liver and lungs, muscles, bones, kidneys, brain, and spleen. Spinal cystic echinococcosis has been reported very rarely in the literature. In this report; we present a pediatric case with spinal cystic echinococcosis, who was diagnosed with multiple cystic echinococcosis in the liver and lungs and was admitted with complaints of difficulty in walking and leg pain 1 year after the albendazole treatment, which he had been taking for 3.5 years. If a diagnosis of cystic echinococcosis was made in any organ, recurrences may occur in another organ at some time, even if the treatment is completed.

Background: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common cause of hair loss in men. In addition to genetic and hormonal factors, oxidative stress (OS) is suggested as a factor in the etiology., Aim: In this study, we aimed to investigate the presence of OS due to thiol disulfide balance deterioration in male patients with AGA., Materials and Methods: A total of 45 male AGA patients and 42 healthy male controls were included in the study. Native thiol, disulfide, and total thiol levels were assessed through automated spectrophotometry. The relationship between total protein, albumin, native thiol, disulfide, and total thiol levels in addition to demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were examined., Results: The mean age of the patients was 32.6 ± 10 years, and the median AGA duration in the patients was 3 years. There was no statistically significant difference in terms of native thiol, disulfide, total thiol levels, disulfide/total thiol, disulfide/native thiol, and native thiol/total thiol ratios between AGA patients and controls. Native thiol and total thiol levels negatively correlated with age and AGA duration, while disulfide levels only correlated with age.Albumin and native thiol levels were significantly lower in patients with low vitamin D levels (p = 0.040 and p = 0.021, respectively); however, total thiol and native thiol/total thiol ratio values were significantly higher., Conclusion: According to this study, thiol disulfide homeostasis is in balance in male patients with AGA. In patients with emotional stress and vitamin D deficiency, the balance appears to be shifted in favor of oxidative stress., (© 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

- Abstract
Background: Hyperhidrosis is responsible for various causes. The increased reactive oxygen radical production with insufficient antioxidant mechanism capacity may play a role in the etiopathogenesis of hyperhidrosis. It is probable to gather data about oxidative stress by detecting plasma thiol/disulfide ratio. The aim of this study was to determine whether thiol-disulfide balance changes in patients with hyperhidrosis., Methods: The files of patients who were diagnosed with hyperhidrosis in the dermatology outpatient clinic between 2015 and 2018 and whose native thiol, total thiol, and disulfide values were examined for any reason were examined., Results: Seventy-three patients were included in the study. 33 of the patients with hyperhidrosis were primary. Mean age; for primary hyperhidrosis patients (PHH) = 26.36 ± 7.61, primary hyperhidrosis (PHH) control group = 27.16 ± 7.94; secondary hyperhidrosis (SHH) patients = 47.88 ± 12.29, SHH control (45.40 ± 12.02). The native thiol values of PHH (469.93 ± 56.82 μmol/L) were higher than SHH (440.64 ± 62.72) (p = 0.024). However, as a result of thiol-disulfide comparison between hyperhidrosis patients (PHH and SHH) and control groups, disulfide levels increased (p = 0.04). In the PHH group, total thiol was measured as 512 ± 54.84 μmol/L, and SHH was measured as 484.11 ± 58.9 μmol/L, (p = 0.074)., Conclusion: Serum thiol levels in SHH increased more than PHH. As a result of thiol-disulfide comparison between hyperhidrosis patients and control groups, the balance shifted in favor of disulfide and oxidative side., (© 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Background: Venous hypertension causes many different cutaneous findings such as varicosities, telangiectasia, edema, and pigmentation, dermatitis, and venous ulcers on the skin., Objective: This study aims to investigate the cutaneous signs and symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and to examine their contribution to early diagnosis., Methods: A total of 150 patients were included in the study who applied to the dermatology outpatient clinic and were diagnosed with skin disease related to CVI or had skin findings. Patient's age, gender, complaints, occupation, additional diseases, drug usage, history of prolonged standing and travel, smoking habit, number of pregnancies, history of varicose veins in the family, dermatological diagnosis/findings, and venous Doppler ultrasonography reports were examined retrospectively., Results: 56% of patients were women. Mean age was 56.69 ± 13.6 years. Overall, 82.7% of total patients had at least one skin finding. The most frequent skin findings except varicose veins were insufficiency dermatitis accounted for 32.7% of patients, telangiectasia, and pigmentation which were comprised 25.3%, 19.3% of the total number of patients respectively. In addition to this, 48.7% of patients had itching problems and 32.7% had pain. Moreover, 46% of patients presented superficial vein insufficiency, while 8.7% had deep vein insufficiency. For 47.3% of patients, vein diameter dilation was observed and 11.3% suffered from perforating vein insufficiency. In terms of Clinical-Etiologic-Anatomic-Pathophysiologic (CEAP) classification, scores of 52% of the patients were C3 and lower, while scores of 48% of total patients were C4a and higher., Conclusions: Early diagnosis and treatment of chronic venous insufficiency could prevent further chronic processes such as venous ulceration which is an advanced CVI finding. Thus, assessing the early skin findings might be important to identify the underlying venous insufficiency disease., (© 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Objective: To make an extensive evaluation about the effects of histopathological findings acquired from the resection materials of patients who underwent transurethral resection of prostate (TUR-P) due to benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) on postoperative urethral stricture formation., Materials and Methods: Among patients who had TUR-P due to BPH and were followed up for minimum 6 months, 51 patients detected to have urethral stricture based on endoscopic imaging were included in the urethral stricture group (Group 1) and 52 patients without urethral stricture were included in the control group (Group 2). The relation between histopathological findings of TURP materials and postoperative stricture occurrence was investigated., Results: No difference in age, prostate volume, operation time and postoperative catheterization time was detected among the groups (p=0.86, p=0.13, p=0.06, p=0.32, respectively). Average time until the urethral stricture diagnosis in the group with urethral stricture was measured as 57.9±27.2 days. In our study, inflammation intensity in peri-urethral, stromal and periglandular areas and intraglandular destruction ratios were higher in urethral stricture group (Group 1) (p=0.048, p=0.3, p=0.03, p=0.01, respectively). Again, it was detected that neutrophil, plasmocyte and eosinophil cell ratios were higher in peri-urethral, stromal and periglandular areas and lymphocyte values were lower compared to the control group., Conclusion: Acquired data has shown that acute inflammatory attacks may be related to urethral stricture with a mostly chronic inflammation background in the prostate. During histopathological examination of prostate tissue acquired through TURP, especially high peri-urethral neutrophil, plasmocyte and eosinophil cell ratios and intra-glandular destruction ratios are important for predicting postoperative urethral stricture occurrences., (Copyright © 2022 Asociación Española de Andrología, Medicina Sexual y Reproductiva. - Abstract
Vitamin D intake over the recommended dose is usually associated with high serum 25(OH)D levels and generally not associated with symptoms of hypercalcemia. High doses of cholecalciferol need to be avoided to protect against vitamin D toxicity and related complications. Strict adherence to the clinical guidelines for treating vitamin D deficiency can ensure safe and effective treatment., Purpose: We observed a tendency to use high doses of cholecalciferol for vitamin D deficiency treatment or vitamin D supplementation. We aimed to determine the biochemical characteristics of patients with high normal and elevated serum 25(OH)D levels., Methods: An online invitation was sent to all tertiary endocrinology clinics in Turkey to complete an online retrospective survey (DeVIT-TOX Survey) for patients diagnosed with high serum 25(OH)D levels (> 88 ng/mL) between January 2019 and December 2019. The patients were evaluated according to the presence of signs and symptoms of hypercalcemia and doses of vitamin D intake, evaluated into the following three groups according to their 25(OH)D levels: group 1, > 150 ng/mL; group 2, 149-100 ng/mL; and group 3, 99-88 ng/mL., Results: A total of 253 patients were included in the final analysis (female/male: 215/38; mean age, 51.5 ± 15.6 years). The average serum 25(OH)D level was 119.9 ± 33 (range, 88-455) ng/mL, and the average serum calcium level was 9.8 ± 0.7 (range, 8.1-13.1) mg/dL. Most (n = 201; 75.4%) patients were asymptomatic despite having high serum 25(OH)D and calcium levels. The serum 25(OH)D level was significantly higher in the symptomatic groups than in the asymptomatic groups (138.6 ± 64 ng/mL vs. 117.7 ± 31 ng/mL, p < 0.05). The most common cause (73.5%) associated with high serum 25(OH)D levels was the inappropriate prescription of a high dose of oral vitamin D (600.000-1.500.000 IU) for treating vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency in a short time (1-3 months). The cut-off value of 25 (OH) D level in patients with hypercalcemia was found to be 89 ng/mL [median 116.5 (89-216)]., Conclusions: High dose of vitamin D intake is associated with a high serum 25 OH D level, without symptoms of hypercalcemia. Inappropriate prescription of vitamin D is the primary cause for elevated 25(OH) D levels and related hypercalcemia. Hypercalcemia may not be observed in every patient at very high 25(OH) D levels. Adherence to the recommendation of guidelines is essential to ensure safe and effective treatment of vitamin D deficiency., (© 2021. - Abstract
Introduction: Testis torsion is a urological emergency and a serious situation that may cause testis atrophy, testicular dysfunction and infertility due to ischaemia/reperfusion(I/R) injury even with early intervention., Objective: To assess the protective effect of dexpanthenol administered intratesticular after detorsion against testis I/R injury., Study Design: Twenty-seven rats were randomly divided into 3 groups containing 9 rats each. The 1st group comprised the sham group with no procedure performed. The 2nd group had only torsion applied, while the 3rd group had torsion + dexpanthenol applied. Rats had 720° clockwise rotation applied to the left testis. After 2 h of ischaemia, testes were de-torsioned and the dexpanthenol group had 500 mg/kg dexpanthenol administered intratesticular after detorsion. After 4 h of reperfusion, rats had blood samples taken and orchiectomy was performed for histologic assessment., Results: A significant difference was detected in all parameters [necrosis(p:<0.001), Cosentino grade (p < 0.001), congestion (p:0.005), fibrosis (p:<0.001), interstitial oedema (p:0.017), JTBS score (p:<0.001), apoptosis (p < 0.001) and testosterone levels (p:0.006)] when the sham, torsion, and torsion + dexpanthenol groups were compared. Significant differences were observed for fibrosis (p:0.010), Cosentino score (p < 0.001), JTBS score (p:<0.001), apoptosis (p:0.001) and total testosterone levels (p:0.013) when torsion and torsion + dexpanthenol groups were compared. The torsion + dexpanthenol group was identified to have more preservation of testis function observed histologically and hormonally compared to the torsion group., Discussion: Dexpanthenol is used in many areas due to both epithelizing and antioxidant effects and lack of clear side effects. In spite of use of many chemical and biological agents to protect against testis I/R injury, none have entered routine use. This study showed that dexpanthenol, which can be easily injected intratesticular during detorsion surgery, has protective effect against histological and functional injury that may develop linked to testis I/R injury. The main limitations of the study are short duration of follow-up due to being a rat experiment and lack of comparison of lipid peroxidation products., Conclusion: This study identified that dexpanthenol with clinically easy use by intratesticular injection after detorsion during surgery had a protective effect against histological and functional injury that will develop linked to I/R injury in the testis., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest None of the authors have any potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2021 Journal of Pediatric Urology Company. - Abstract
Background/aim: Magnetic resonance (MR) images, signal intensity ratios calculated using region of interests (ROI) in T2W images by proportioning the dominant myoma to iliac muscle can aid patient selection and, thus, in achieving better outcomes with the uterine artery embolization (UAE) procedure. The present study investigates the association between the success of UAE treatment with signal intensity (SI) ratio of the dominant myoma to the iliac muscle in MR imaging performed prior to the procedure., Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study and included 30 patients who admitted to our clinic between February 2017 and July 2019 due to symptoms associated with myoma and who underwent MR imaging before and after UAE treatment. All patients, MR images obtained before UAE treatment and at the 12th month after the procedure were evaluated. In MRI, SI values were calculated by proportioning the dominant myoma to the iliac muscle using circular ROI in T1 weighted (W), T2W, and post-contrast T1W images. In the present study, 50% or more volumetric regression of the myoma with infarction of fibroids (loss of enhancement) at the 12-month follow-up MRI after the procedure was considered a successful procedure., Results: Myoma volumes calculated in MR images showed significant differences between the MRI performed before UAE procedure and the MRI performed at the 12th month after the procedure (p < 0.0001). SI ratio calculated from pre-procedure T2W MR images was found to be a significant determinant of 50% or more volumetric regression in the myoma after UAE procedure (p = 0.017), T1W, post-contrast T1W images were not statistically significant (p = 0.211)., Conclusion: Our results indicate that SI ratio of the dominant myoma to the iliac muscle calculated using ROI in T2W images of MR studies performed before UAE procedure can predict the success of the procedure., Competing Interests: none declared., (This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.)

- Abstract
Lichen planus is a traumatic (koebner positive), chronic, inflammatory and autoimmune disease affecting the oral and genital mucosa, scalp and nails. The Food and Drug Administration approved the use of medical leeches for therapeutic purposes (hirudotherapy) in 2004 to ensure flap nutrition in plastic surgery. A 34-year-old male patient was admitted to our dermatology outpatient clinic with a swollen, itchy and purple-coloured rash on legs and back for a month, and white and reticulated plaques in the mouth. It was learned that a week earlier, eight leeches was applied to both knees and ankles to alleviate knee and leg pain. The patient had no history of drug use. A punch biopsy was taken from the patient with a preliminary diagnosis of lichen planus and lichenoid drug reaction. The histopathological examination showed hyperkeratosis, irregular acanthosis and hypergranulosis. Systemic methylprednisolone, levocetrizine and topical methylprednisolone aceponate were planned for the therapy. To the best of our knowledge, the appearance of lichen planus after hirudotherapy was never reported in literature. Hence, physicians should keep in mind that lichen planus and similar dermatoses could be triggered due to hirudotherapy. The fact that lichen planus appeared a week after hirudotherapy does not necessarily mean that leeches were the cause of this phenomenon. Accordingly, it could be deduced that lichen planus was probably developed as a result of leech therapy.

- Abstract
Malignant thyroid lesions are the most common malignancy of the endocrine glands with increasing rates in the last two decades. Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common thyroid malignancy. In our study, we aimed to quantitatively evaluate the levels of DNA repair proteins MSH2, MLH1, MGMT, which are representative blocks of patients diagnosed with papillary carcinoma, chronic thyroiditis, or colloidal goiter. Total or subtotal thyroidectomy material of 90 patients diagnosed with papillary carcinoma, nodular colloidal goiter, or chronic thyroiditis between 2009 and 2012 were retrospectively evaluated. Tissue samples obtained from paraffin blocks were stained with MGMT, MSH2, MLH1 proteins and their immunohistochemistry was evaluated. Prepared sections were examined qualitatively by an impartial pathologist and a clinician, taking into account the staining method under the trinocular light microscope. Although there was no statistically significant difference in MGMT, MSH2, MLH1, follicular cell positivity, staining intensity, and immunoreactivity values, papillary carcinoma cases showed a higher rate of follicular cell positivity, and this difference was more pronounced between papillary carcinoma and colloidal goiter. In the MSH2 follicular cell positivity evaluation, the difference between chronic thyroiditis and colloidal goiter was significant (p = 0.023). The difference between chronic thyroiditis and colloidal goiter was significant in the MSH2 staining intensity evaluation (p = 0.001). The difference between chronic thyroiditis and colloidal goiter was significant in MLH1 immunoreactivity evaluation (p = 0.012). Papillary carcinoma cases were demonstrated by nuclear staining only for MSH2 and MLH1 proteins as opposed to hyperplastic nodules. The higher levels of expression of DNA repair genes in malignant tumors compared to benign tumors are attributed to the functional activation of DNA repair genes. Further studies are needed for DNA repair proteins to be a potential test in the development and progression of thyroid cancer.

Background: Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic disease of the skin, for which the pathogenesis is not known. It can lead to various changes of the skin and the genital area, potentially leading to both functional as well as cosmetic problems for the patient, thus disrupting the quality of life. In this study; the purpose was to review the clinical characteristics and the treatments of the 15 pediatric patients under the age of 18 followed up in our out-patient clinic with a diagnosis of LS and to compare the findings with literature data., Methods: Between 2011 and 2017, the files of 15 patients diagnosed clinically and/or histologically with LS in our clinic were retrospectively examined. The demographic characteristics, clinic and laboratory findings, treatment options of the patients are reported., Results: Of the patients included in the study 14 were girls and one was a boy. The average age was 11.6 years (5-17 years), the average age for the initial disease was 7.8 years (2-13 years). The average duration of the disease at the diagnosis was 3.9 years. The most common form was genital vulvar type (8/14 girls) without anal and cutaneous involvement, and each of them suffered from itching. One of the cases had genital LS as well as extragenital morphea lesions. Two of the 15 patients were ANA positive. The other antibodies were negative. In two cases with extragenital involvement, lesions were widespread and they were in blachkoid form., Conclusion: LS is a chronic disease that progresses with recurrences and regressions. In our study, the most common LS type was genital type (60%). There was extragenital involvement in 6 patients (40%). Extragenital involvement was the most common on the trunk. Diagnosis, treatment and follow-up during childhood is highly important to prevent any possible future anatomical or psychological damage and genital malignancies.

- Abstract
Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a neoplasia of unknown clinical etiology that clinically and radiologically tends to mimic a malignant neoplasm. The tumor is histologically composed of a mixture of inflammatory cells, myofibroblastic spindle cells and plasma cells. It can occur in any part of the body. Although pulmonary inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is the most common primary lung mass especially in childhood, this entity is usually not considered in differential diagnosis of lung nodules or masses. In this article, we aimed to disscus the pathology and imaging findings of the pulmonary inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor and increase the familiarity of radiologists and clinicians to this entity.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an important health problem. The most important hypotheses for the pathogenesis of this disease are the deterioration of immune responses and loss of tolerance against bacteria in the enteric flora. Although IBD has been widely investigated, its treatment remains difficult. This study aims to investigate the effects of garlic oil (GO) on an experimental colitis model., Methods: Twenty-eight rats were randomly divided into four equal groups as follows: group 1 (sham), group 2 (control), group 3 (topical treatment) and group 4 (topical and systemic treatment). An acetic acid-induced colitis model was produced in groups 2, 3 and 4 and was administered normal saline, topical GO and topical and systemic GO, respectively., Results: Hydroxyproline levels were lower in the treatment groups than in the control group. TNF-α levels were significantly lower in group 3 than in group 2. Macroscopic scores were significantly lower in group 4 than in group 2. Significant differences were observed between the treatment and control groups according to their epithelial loss., Conclusion: GO can reduce colonic damage and inflammation in the acetic acid-induced colitis model, with effects on both local and systemic treatments, but with a more pronounced effect in local treatment.

- Abstract
Context: Bone mineral density is normal in acromegalic patients and the cause of increased fracture risk that characterizes active acromegaly is unknown., Objective: This study compared serum sclerostin levels between patients with active acromegaly and healthy individuals., Design, Setting, and Participants: The serum sclerostin levels of patients with active acromegaly were compared with those of healthy volunteers in a cross-sectional study. The mean age of the 30 acromegaly patients (male/female: 14/16) was 47.26 ± 12.52 years (range, 18-64 years) and that of the healthy volunteers (male/female: 17/13) was 44.56 ± 10.74 years (range, 19-62 years). IGF-1 and GH levels were measured using an electrochemiluminescence method, and serum sclerostin levels using an ELISA. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare sclerostin levels between the 2 groups. The correlations of sclerostin level with IGF-1 and GH were determined using Spearman's test., Results: The 2 groups did not differ in age or sex (P > 0.05). The median GH and IGF-1 levels in the patient group were 2.49 ng/mL (range, 0.22-70.00 ng/mL) (interquartile range [IQR], 1.3-4.52) and 338.5 ng/mL (range, 147-911 ng/mL) (IQR, 250-426), respectively. The median GH and IGF-1 levels in the control group were 0.95 ng/mL (range, 0.3-2.3) and 144 ng/mL (range, 98-198), respectively. The median sclerostin level was 29.95 ng/mL (range, 7.5-78.1 ng/mL) (IQR, 14.37-37.47) in the acromegaly group and 22.44 ng/mL (range, 8.45-36.44 ng/mL) (IQR, 13.71-27.52) in the control group (P < 0.05). There was a moderate positive correlation between the sclerostin and IGF-1 levels (rho = 0.54; P < 0.01), and between the sclerostin and GH levels (rho = 0.41; P < 0.05)., Conclusions: High sclerostin levels may contribute to the increased fracture risk seen in patients with acromegaly., (© Endocrine Society 2019.
