The YK 1 shipwreck, found at Yenikapı, Istanbul, is one of 37 shipwrecks dating to the medieval era. This paper describes the studies and the processes which were conducted to conserve the YK 1. Firstly, the level of physical and chemical degradation of the wood from the YK 1 was examined, which revealed that the wood was highly degraded. Therefore, PEG 2000 was chosen for the impregnation process before vacuum freeze-drying. In addition, the ASE values confirmed that the PEG 2000 impregnation and vacuum freeze-drying method together were successful in conserving the YK 1, with values higher than PEG 2000 impregnation and vacuum freeze-drying methods alone. The concentration of the PEG solution in the tank was monitored throughout the impregnation process. Following this, samples taken from the wood cores were analysed using FTIR to evaluate the effectiveness of the impregnation process. Finally, SEM was used to examine the effectiveness of the PEG 2000 impregnation and vacuum freeze-drying method. The SEM images showed that the PEG 2000 was uniformly distributed, and the wood had no deformation after freeze-drying. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract In this study, a simulation and test-based procedure is created and applied to develop mechanical pyroshock test setup. In order to build an effective design, preliminary input parameters are defined with finite element simulations. The agreement between impact simulations and experimental data was achieved for resonant plate, metallic anvil plate and gun system. The obtained Shock Response Spectrum (SRS) curves are not well fitted to explicit finite element simulations for nonmetallic anvil plate materials, such as felt, which also have significant contribution to results. Therefore, further improvement is established by using test-based Response Surface Method (RSM). After validating the relationship statistically, response optimizer was used to find the best combination of design parameters to achieve target SRS curve. Thirty-seven shipwrecks, which are dated from 5th to 11th centuries AD, were uncovered under the supervision of the Istanbul Archaeology Museums Directorate in Yenikapı salvage excavations at Yenikapı, İstanbul. The woods of the Yenikapı shipwrecks, which were found during the excavation, were in the waterlogged state. The physical and chemical degradation degree of the waterlogged archaeological wood has been evaluated in detail to establish a successful conservation procedure. The determination of the chemical changes in the structure of the waterlogged archaeological wood provided information about the degradation process. In this study, fourteen untreated wood samples were taken from the three galleys of Yenikapı Shipwrecks (YK 13, YK 16, and YK 25), which are dated between the 7th and 10th centuries AD. In order to determine the chemical characterization of the waterlogged archaeological wood, the ATR-FTIR method was used. With the aim of making a safe comparison, three fresh wood samples (plane, pine, and elm) were also analysed. The spectral comparison all the changes of holocellulose and lignin components in the structure of the waterlogged archaeological wood samples were detected; the lignin degraded but it remained more intact than polysaccharides. New and additional data have been provided regarding the characterization of waterlogged archaeological woods for many ships in the Yenikapı Shipwrecks Project, the variety of the wood types used in the construction of the ships, and the usage of the ships such as galleys. In this article, finite element simulations and response surface method are used to optimize perforated plate parameters for ballistic protection. After statistically validating the relationship between residual velocity and geometric parameters, a response optimizer was used to find the best combination of design parameters to stop a threat with less areal density. Finally, the optimized solution was checked both numerically and experimentally to show the effectiveness of the developed methodology. In this paper, some of the important defeating mechanisms of the high hardness perforated plates against 7.62 × 54 armor piercing ammunition were investigated. The experimental and numerical results identified three defeating mechanisms effective on perforated armor plates which are the asymmetric forces deviates the bullet from its incident trajectory, the bullet core fracture and the bullet core nose erosion. The initial tests were performed on the monolithic armor plates of 9 and 20 mm thickness to verify the fidelity of the simulation and material model parameters. The stochastic nature of the ballistic tests on perforated armor plates was analyzed based on the bullet impact zone with respect to holes. Various scenarios including without and with bullet failure models were further investigated to determine the mechanisms of the bullet failure. The agreement between numerical and experimental results had significantly increased with including the bullet failure criterion and the bullet nose erosion threshold into the simulation. As shown in results, good agreement between Ls-Dyna simulations and experimental data was achieved and the defeating mechanism of perforated plates was clearly demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Although advanced lightweight composite based armors are available, high hardness steels in military vehicles are often used to provide ballistic protection at a relatively low cost and is an interesting material due to its widespread usage in vehicle structure. In this study, ballistic limit of 500HB armor steel was determined against 7.62mm 54R B32 API hardened steel core ammunition. Lagrange and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations were carried out using 3D model of bullet and high hardness armor target. Perforation tests on 9 and 20mm thickness armor were performed to validate simulation methodology. Also material tests were performed for armor steel and ammunition hardened steel core to develop Johnson–Cook constitutive relations for both strength and failure models. Finally, results from 3D numerical simulations with detailed models of bullet and target were compared with experiments. The study indicates that the ballistic limit can be quantitatively well predicted independent of chosen simulation methodology, but qualitatively some differences are seen during perforation and fragmentation. As shown in results, good agreement between Ls-Dyna simulations and experimental data was achieved by Lagrange formulation with the full bullet model. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
