A field portable system is described which measures the response of gas exchange of one leaf to changes in environmental parameters under controlled conditions, and which simultaneously measures the gas exchange of another leaf as the climatic parameters vary naturally. The system consists of two independently operating cuvettes. It enables detailed studies of photosynthesis and stomata/transpiration of leaves attached to the plant in their natural position. It provides control of temperature, humidity, CO2 and oxygen concentration (or, alternatively, of other gases) as well as of light. Infrared gas analyzers for CO2 and H2O are used which allow similar time constants for the measurement of the two gases. Examples of a diurnal course of gas exchange of a leaf in its natural exposition and of experiments with steady-state responses of gas exchange are presented. In Eucalyptus pauciflora Sieb. ex Spreng. ssp. pauciflora, a set of response curves of CO2 assimilation (A) to CO2 as measured at various leaf temperatures and light levels, shows carboxylation efficiency to be light saturated at the lower photon irradiances the lower the leaf temperature is. Carboxylation efficiency is maximal at 25 °C. At ambient CO2 partial pressure stomata open in a way that CO2 assimilation occurs at a rate found within the curvature region of the CO2 response function of A. The light-independent CO2 compensation point as a function of temperature is presented. Applying a combined heat/low humidity pulse (15 or 60 min) on leaves of Eucalyptus behriana F. Muell. or Pinus radiata R. Don, respectively, leads to a lower level of intercellular carbon dioxide partial pressure (Ci) during the decline in A and leaf conductance to water vapour (g). A lower Ci level is maintained during recovery of A and g, A almost reaching the pre-pulse level but not g. The existence of an after-effect indicates that the response to the combined high temperature/low humidity pulse is a multi-step process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The lignotuberous mallee Eucalyptus behriana F. Muell. had much lower predawn leaf water potentials (not higher than -1.2 MPa) than other eucalypts (as high as -0.2 MPa), even after extended rain. This led to the expectation that the lignotuber of E. behriana might have specific hydraulic characteristics. Keeping the soil around partially defoliated malices for several days underwater did not raise the water status above the maximum leaf water potential observed under natural conditions. Digging a plant out and placing its roots in water after removal of the soil rapidly increased the water status to a level consistant with other eucalypts. This indicated that the major impedance to water uptake was a component of the soil rather than in the roots or in the lignotuber. Some of the individual mallees had only two major stems or branches. One stem or branch was kept covered throughout the experiments to prevent transpiration. The other stem was subjected to a variety of different conditions in order to modify water loss from it. The transpiring branch affected the water status of the non-transpiring plant parts. Hydraulic resistances in the shoot and root/lignotuber were determined from differences in the leaf water potential of covered and uncovered branches, at high water flow rates through the plant. Resistances in branches, including the liquid phase component of the leaf, were significantly larger than in root or lignotuber. The total plant hydraulic resistance of E. behriana was similar to that of other eucalypts, such as E. pauciflora Sieb. ex Spreng. or E. delegatensis R. T. Bak., even though its growth form was different and its natural leaf water potentials were much lower. An osmotic adjustment at the leaf level was observed in the mallee, keeping its bulk leaf turgot in the same range as compared to the other eucalypt species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recycling of paper and board (PB) yields economic and environmental advantages compared to primary paper production. However, PB from lightweight packaging (LWP) waste is currently not comprehensively reintegrated into the paper value stream. To develop an adapted recycling process for PB from LWP, PB quantities, qualities, and fluctuations ranges in LWP are required. Currently, no sufficient database is available. Therefore, we developed a methodical approach and conducted a case study to access the PB potential in LWP sorting plants using manual analysis and sensor-based material flow monitoring. Differences resulting from seasonal variations, materials from different settlement structures, and fluctuation ranges in LWP composition over two weeks have been investigated. PB contents in the input of 6.5 wt% (ww) and 5.9 wt% (ww) were determined for winter and summer sampling campaigns, respectively. The PB product stream amounted to 5.7 wt% (ww, winter) and 4.8 wt% (ww, summer). Around 45 wt% (ww) of PB from the PB product stream was classified as misplaced by the consumer and should have been discarded in separate paper collections. Based on the determined PB quantities and qualities, a potential of usable and in the PB product stream available PB in LWP was determined. The technically available and usable PB potential in German LWP waste amounts to 89,000 to 100,000tons per year (average PB yield of around 65 wt% (ww)). The methodical approach can be adapted for sorting plant balances. Determining mass-based material flow compositions (MFCOs) is crucial for assessing and optimizing the recycling of post-consumer plastics. Currently, MFCOs in plastic recycling are primarily determined through manual sorting analysis, but the use of inline near-infrared (NIR) sensors holds potential to automate the characterization process, paving the way for novel sensor-based material flow characterization (SBMC) applications. This data article aims to expedite SBMC research by providing NIR-based false-color images of plastic material flows with their corresponding MFCOs. The false-color images were created through the pixel-based classification of binary material mixtures using a hyperspectral imaging camera (EVK HELIOS NIR G2-320; 990 nm-1678 nm wavelength range) and the on-chip classification algorithm (CLASS 32). The resulting NIR-MFCO dataset includes n  = 880 false-color images from three test series: (T1) high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) flakes, (T2a) post-consumer HDPE packaging and PET bottles, and (T2b) post-consumer HDPE packaging and beverage cartons for n  = 11 different HDPE shares (0% - 50%) at four different material flow presentations (singled, monolayer, bulk height H1, bulk height H2). Experiments with sensor-based sorting (SBS) machinery provide insight into the effect of throughput rate and input composition on the sorting performance. For this purpose, material mixtures with certain compositions and particle size distributions were created from waste fractions and sorted at various throughput rates. To evaluate the sorting performance of the SBS unit (using near infrared technology) in dependence of the applied load, four assessment factors concerning the output fractions were studied: yield, product purity, recovery/product quantity and incorrectly discharged share of reject particles. The influences on the assessment parameters of light twodimensional (2D) particles in the input of a sorting stage and failing air valves in an SBS unit were evaluated for various input compositions at different throughput rates. It was found that a share of approximately 5 wt% 2D particles in the input had a similar negative effect on the yield as the malfunction of 20% of all air valves in an SBS machine at high throughput rates. Additionally, the failure of the air valves reduced the product purity of the sorting stage at increased throughput rates. Furthermore, qualitative observations concerning systematic effects of prior studies could be confirmed. Resulting graphs for a specific input composition of an SBS unit at varying throughput rates could be used to adjust the throughput rate to meet the exact demands for a sorting stage.

A heavy non-ferrous metal fraction (< 50 mm) of municipal solid waste incineration bottom ashes from wet-mechanical treatment was separated by screening, magnetic separation and eddy-current separation into ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals and residual sub-fractions. The non-ferrous metal fractions were divided and subjected to (i) a washing process, (ii) dry abrasion and (iii) no mechanical pre-treatment to study the effect of resulting different surface properties on a subsequent X-ray fluorescence sorting into precious metals, zinc, copper, brass, stainless steel and a residual fraction. The qualities of the X-ray fluorescence output fractions were investigated by chemical analyses (precious metal fraction and the residual fraction), pyrometallurgical tests and subsequent chemical analyses of the metals and slags produced by the melting processes (zinc, copper, brass and stainless steel fraction). Screening directs brass and stainless steel primarily into the coarser fractions, while copper and residual elements were rather transferred into the finer fractions. X-ray fluorescence sorting yielded zinc, copper, brass, stainless steel and precious metals fractions in marketable qualities. Neither a negative nor a positive impact of mechanical pre-treatment on the composition of these fractions was identified. Solely the yield of the brass fraction in the grain size 16-20 mm decreased with increasing mechanical pre-treatment. The pre-treatment also had no impact on yield and quality of the products of pyrometallurgical tests.

In the project 'NEW-MINE' the use of sensor-based sorting machinery in the field of 'landfill mining' is investigated. Defilements pose a particular challenge in the treatment and sorting of plastics contained in landfills. For this reason, the effects of various pollutants caused by the interactions in the landfill body or the mechanical treatment steps in landfill mining are examined. In the following elaboration, the focus is on the influences of surface moisture and surface roughness of plastics on sensor-based sorting by means of near-infrared technology. Near-infrared radiation (NIR) in a wavelength range of 990 nm to 1500 nm has been used for the detection and classification of plastic particles. The experiments demonstrate that increased surface roughness reduces signal noise and thereby improves the classification of both spectrally similar and transparent plastics, but reduces the yield of low-softening plastics because their sliding speed on a sensor-based chute sorter varies as a result of the heating of the chute. Surface moisture causes the absorption of radiation from 1115 nm (high density polyethylene [HDPE], linear low density polyethylene [LLDPE], polyethylen terephthalate [PET] and polyvinylchloride [PVC]) or from 1230 nm (low density polyethylene [LDPE], polypropylene [PP] and thermoplastic polyurethane [TPU]) up to at least 1680 nm, which causes amplification or attenuation of various extremes in the derivative. However, the influence of surface moisture on the yield of plastics is usually very low and depends on the spectral differences between the different plastics.

History and Clinical Findings: A 48-year-old patient from Pakistan was referred with scleral icterus, ascites and lower limb edema., Diagnosis: The patient was suffering from post-hepatitis liver cirrhosis, CHILD stage B, with underlying chronic hepatitis B and C coinfection., Treatment and Course: One year after diagnosis, orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) was performed. To avoid recurrence of the hepatitis B in the transplant, the patient was given a treatment with lamivudine preoperatively. A prophylaxis with a combination of lamivudine and hepatitis B immunoglobulin peri- and postoperatively has been given for more than 5 years., Conclusion: The use of lamivudine and hepatitis B immunoglobulin improves transplant survival in patients who have undergone OLT on the basis of post-hepatitis liver cirrhosis secondary to chronic hepatitis B. Costs are reduced by administering the hepatitis B immunoglobulin intramuscularly and by managing the preoperative and aftercare of the patient on an outpatient basis.

Unlabelled: The aim of this prospective study was to compare five different leukocyte proteins in feces of patients with chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and healthy persons who underwent prophylactic colonoscopy., Methods: The leukocyte proteins calprotectin, lactoferrin, lysozyme, myeloperoxidase, and PMN-elastase were determined with immunoassays in fecal samples of three consecutive feces (e.g. three days) in 40 healthy persons, 39 patients with chronic IBD (of these 21 with Crohn's disease and 18 with ulcerative colitis), and 40 patients with IBS., Results: ROC curves calculated for healthy persons and patients with IBD yielded the following areas under the curves (AUCs): PMN-elastase 0.916, calprotectin 0.872, myeloperoxidase 0.750, lysozyme 0.726, and lactoferrin 0.693. The AUCs of PMN-elastase and calprotectin were not significantly different (p = 0.327), whereas PMN-elastase or calprotectin vs. the other proteins were significantly different (p < 0.001). PMN-elastase and calprotectin correlated with the endoscopically classified severity of inflammation. All fecal leukocyte markers in IBS were found in the range of the healthy persons. Data on storage stability of leukocyte proteins in fecal supernatants are given., Conclusion: Fecal PMN-elastase and calprotectin support the differentiation of chronic IBD from IBS and correlate with the severity of inflammation.

The presented work pioneers the embryonic Drosophila CNS for studies of the developmental regulation and function of gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA). We describe for the first time the developmental pattern of GABA in Drosophila and address underlying regulatory mechanisms. Surprisingly, and in contrast to vertebrates, detectable levels of GABA occur late during Drosophila neurogenesis, after essential neuronal proliferation and growth have taken place and synaptogenesis has been initiated. This timeline is almost unchanged when the GABA synthetase glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) is strongly misexpressed throughout the nervous system suggesting a tight post-translational regulation of GABA expression. We confirmed such GABA control mechanisms in an independent model system, i.e. primary Drosophila cell cultures raised in elevated [K+]. The data suggest that, in both systems, GABA suppression occurs via control of GAD activity. Using developing embryos and cell cultures as parallel assay systems for pharmacological and genetic studies we show that the negative regulation of GAD can be overridden by drugs known to elevate intracellular free [Ca2+]. Our results provide the basis for investigations of genetic mechanisms underlying the observed phenomenon, and we discuss the potential implications of this work for Drosophila neurogenesis but also for a general understanding of GAD regulation.

The development of a stepwise therapy, as detailed below, can be administered to the mostly young patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis on an out-patient basis and appropriate to their needs. This is true not only for the activity of the disease, but also for extraintestinal manifestations. The numerous variations in the stepwise anti-inflammatory therapy of chronic inflammatory bowel disease, but also in the substitution therapy of deficiency states and the therapy of accompanying extraintestinal diseases provide the gastroenterologist with the possibility of a long-term treatment tailored to the needs of the individual patient.

Two developments have led to the elaboration of a complementarity theory in modern natural science--the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics and Viktor von Weizsäckers introduction of the subject into biology. The revolutionary implications of these developments are discernible in modern literature. The author seeks to show that a paradigm shift in positivistic clinical medicine is necessitated by the history and theory of science.
