Bu tez, 1915 sonrası Batı Ermeni Edebiyatı'nın İstanbul kolunun en dikkat çekici romancılarından Zaven Biberyan'ın inkârla kuşatılmış bir habitusun derinlerinde yankılanan çağrısına kulak verme amacı taşıyor. Kariyerine Ermenice gazetelerde yazdığı politik yazılarla başlayan, zaman içerisinde Ermeni basının en sivri seslerinden biri haline gelen Biberyan, çocukluğundan itibaren haşır neşir olduğu edebiyatı etikten politiğe açılan bir kapı olarak görmekte gecikmişti. Bu nedenle onun hangi şartlarda ürettiğine bakmak, aynı zamanda bu gecikmenin nedenlerini ve sonuçlarını tespit etmek açısından büyük önem taşıyor. Ermeni toplumsal yaşamını çepeçevre saran travmayı temsilinin ve bunun kendi hayatına yansıma biçiminin Felaket ufkunda okunduğu takdirde kolektif varoluşa dair bir söyleme dönüştüğüne inanıyorum.Çalışma, üç bölümden oluşuyor. Zaven Biberyan'ın kapsamlı bir biyografisinin sunulacağı birinci bölümde, yazarın henüz yayımlanmamış hatıratı merkezi bir yer tutuyor. Felaket'in toplumsal yaşam üzerine çöken ağırlığını belirgin bir biçimde ortaya koymak için gazete yazılarından da yararlanarak Biberyan'ın etik kaygılarının izini sürülüyor. İkinci bölüm ise yazarın eserlerinin analizine odaklanıyor. Biberyan'ın inkârın bir parçası olarak yaşama deneyimini hikâyelerinde ve romanlarında yansıtırken kullandığı temaların tespiti son bölümde Felaket ufkunda yapılacak okumanın zeminini hazırlayacak.Çalışmanın son bölümü yazarın hayatını ve eserlerini bir arada okuyarak Felaket'in temsilinin imkânsızlığını yazarın kendi hayatında ve edebiyatında nasıl deneyimlediğini ortaya koyuyor. Asla ödün vermediği politik duruşuyla inkâra meydan okuyan, ancak ısrarla delmeye çalıştığı sessizliğin içine itilen Biberyan'ın öfkesinin ve hayal kırıklıklarının uzlaşı arayışından ayrı okunulamayacağını savunuyor. This study aims at lending an ear to the call of Zaven Biberyan, a remarkable novelist belonging to the Istanbul branch of Post-1915 Western Armenian Literature, which echoes in the depths of a habitus encircled by denial. Biberyan, whose career began with the political articles he wrote for the Armenian newspapers and developed a distinctive voice in the Armenian press in the course of time, was late to view the literature, with which he had been on intimate terms since his childhood, as a power providing the possibility to move from ethics to politics. For detecting the reasons and consequences of this delay, it is essential to analyze the conditions under which he produced. I firmly believe that his representation of the trauma surrounding the Armenian community life and the way this trauma reverberates on his life will transform into a discourse on true collectivity. The thesis is composed of three chapters. In the first chapter, which presents an extensive biography of Zaven Biberyan, the unpublished memoir of the writer takes center stage. To make explicit the gravity of the Catastrophe imposed upon social life, the ethical concerns of Zaven Biberyan will be traced through the help of his articles. Second chapter focuses on the analysis of Biberyan's literary works. The evaluation of the themes that Biberyan uses in his novels and stories to reflect on the experience of living as a part of denial will provide the basis for the reading on the horizon of the Catastrophe during the last chapter. The last chapter, through reading the biography and works of Zaven Biberyan, reveals the way he experiences the impossibility to represent the Catastrophe in his life and literary quest. It argues that the rage and frustration of Zaven Biberyan, who challenged the denial with his uncompromising political stance but was engulfed in the silence he struggled to shatter, cannot be segregated from the search of reconciliation. 105

Bu çalışmanın amacı 17. yüzyıl mutasavvıf şairlerinden Oğlan Şeyh İbrahim Efendi'nin tasavvufi bağlamda hakikate ulaşmanın en mühim yollarından biri olarak gördüğü bilme eyleminin nasıl ve ne şekilde mümkün olabileceğini; İbrahim Efendi'nin eserleri doğrultusunda ve eserlerinde kullandığı paradoksal söylem ışığında incelemek ve araştırmaktır. Bilmenin akıl ile mi kalp ile mi mümkün olacağına dair sorgulama; tezde, ikilik ekseninde bir bilgi tartışması yapılmasına zemin hazırlamıştır. İbrahim Efendi'nin eserlerini incelediğimizde ikiliğin yalnızca bilme eyleminde değil, bilmenin öznesinde, nesnesinde ve gerçekleşeceği âlemde de tezahür ettiğini görürüz. Bilinmek isteyen Tanrının arzusuna yönelik önce kendini bilmesi gereken insan; esasında bilinebilecek yegâne şeyin Allah'ın varlığı olduğunu idrak etmelidir. Çünkü insanın kendi varlığı da dahil olmak üzere âlemde şahitlik ettiği her bir varlık Allah'ın ismi ve sıfatlarının birer tecellisidir. İnsan ikiliğin kaçınılmaz doğasını kavrayıp karşısına çıkan her bir ikiliği birliğe götüren vesileler olarak gördüğünde, akıl ile bilmenin ötesinde gönülden bilmeyi deneyimler ve hakikate yaklaşır. Tezin ikilik ekseninde tartışılıyor olmasının ana sebeplerinden biri İbrahim Efendi'nin eserlerinde tercih ettiği paradoksal söylemden kaynaklanmaktadır. Anlatmak istediği şeyin önce nasıl olmaması gerektiğini anlatan İbrahim Efendi okuyucuyu her daim bir ikilik içinde bırakır. Olmaması gerekenin bilgisiyle esas olanın kıymetinin vurgulandığı bu tezde İbrahim Efendi'nin paradoksal anlatısının rehberliğinde, varlık, bilmek, gönül ve hakikat kavramlarını idrak etmek amaçlanır. Bu kavramlar yakın okuma yöntemiyle irdelenir ve tarih, edebiyat, felsefe ve filoloji gibi disiplinler aracılığıyla tezin muhteviyatı güçlendirilir. Dolayısıyla 17. yüzyılda yazılmış metinleri yazıldığı dönemin kavramları ele alınarak incelemenin neticesinde İbrahim Efendi'nin dünyasında insanın hakikate bilerek ulaşabileceği ve bu bilmenin de gönül ile mümkün olabileceği bilgisine ulaşırız. Fakat bilmek yalnızca teorik bir edinim değil aynı zamanda pratik bir süreçtir. Anahtar kelimeler: ikilik, varlık, insan, âlem, bilmek, akıl, gönül, hakikat The aim of this study is to examine and research how act of knowing is possible, which Oğlan Şeyh Ibrahim Efendi, a 17th century Sufi poet, considers as one of the most important ways to reach the truth, in parallel of his works and in the light of paradoxical discourse he uses in these works. The investigation of whether knowing is possible through the intellect or the heart provides a basis for the debate of knowledge via the embodiment of duality. When we study the corpus of İbrahim Efendi, we see that not only knowing but also the actor of knowing, the object of knowing and the universe in which this act of knowing happens are touched by the duality. The human who first needs to know oneself towards God's wish to be known, should comprehend the only thing that can be known is the existence of God. It is because all the existent including his/her own self which man witnesses in the universe are the manifestation of God's Names and Attributes. Only when man perceives that all the dualities are the opportunities bringing man to the unity by understanding the compulsory nature of the duality, man can experience knowing through the heart beyond the intellect and approach the truth. One of the main reasons of having discussion in the axis of duality in the thesis stems from the paradoxical discourse which İbrahim Efendi prefers to use in his works. When İbrahim Efendi describes something in his works, first he describes what that thing is not. In this way, he puts the reader into the duality. With the guidance of İbrahim Efendi's paradoxical narrative, this thesis aims to comprehend such concepts as the existence, the knowledge, the heart and the truth with their knowledge of what they are not. These concepts are examined with the close-reading method and the content are supported by the multidisciplinary approach with the help of history, literature, philosophy and philology. Therefore, we conclude that man can reach the truth through knowing and this knowledge is attained via the heart in İbrahim Efendi's view, after examining the works of İbrahim Efendi. 88 pages Pride and Prejudice, one of the most famous novel of all times, has also been a cornerstone in English literature, narrating social restrictions of English middle class, portraying the limited and heavily defined existence of women in society. It is already a common practice to make feminist readings of Regency period literary pieces to illustrate the gender struggle; yet for the purpose of this thesis, television and media adaptations of the novel have been chosen to further delve into the question whether adaptations, based on both time period and cultural background elaborated in the feminist reading of Pride and Prejudice or not. Different types of adaptations have been picked and accordingly compared to illustrate the point that even though adaptations have widened the audience, they have been far from adding anything to the feminist reading; more so, as the adaptation gets closer to modernity, it further strays away from feminism, simply adding into consumer culture. Bütün zamanların en ünlü romanlarından biri olan Aşk ve Gurur, İngiliz orta sınıfının sosyal kısıtlamalarını ve kadının toplumun içindeki varoluşunun taşıdığı ağır sosyal yükleri anlatarak İngiliz Edebiyatı’nın köşe taşlarından biri olmuştur. Regency döneminin pek çok edebi eserinin feminist okumasını yapmak hali hazırda yaygın bir uygulama olsa da, bu tezin amacı için, eserin televizyon ve medya adaptasyonları seçilerek, eserin dönemine ve kültürel arka planına bağlı olarak, feminist okumayı derinleştirip derinleştirmedikleri incelenmiştir. Farklı adaptasyonlar araştırmaya uygun şekilde seçilmiş ve karşılaştırılmış; ve eserin ulaştığı kitleyi genişletmiş olsalar da feminist okumaya bir katkıda bulunmadıkları; aksine adaptasyonlar modern zamanlara yakınlaştıkça feminizmden daha da uzaklaştıkları ve basitçe tüketim kültürünün aracı haline geldikleri gözlemlenmiştir.

Bu tez, içerik ve eleştirel söylem analizleri yöntemlerini kullanarak Türkçe ders kitaplarında yetişkinler ve çocuklar arasındaki ilişkileri çocukluk dönemi inşası ve çocuk katılımı bağlamında incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. 1. sınıftan 8. sınıfa kadar sekiz adet Türkçe ders kitabındaki yer alan yazılı ve görsel içerikler; çocukluk kurgusu ve çocuk katılımı arka planı ve çocukluk çalışmaları teorisi çerçevesinde analiz edilmiştir. Apple tarafından toplumlara ait `resmi bilgi` olarak tanımlanan ders kitapları içerikleri; toplumlardaki baskın ve `norm` kabul edilen söylemleri yansıtmakta ve desteklemektedir. Bu tezde; yetişkinlerin çocukluk algıları, mevcut çocukluk inşası, yetişkin ile çocuk arasındaki güç ilişkileri ve çocukların katılım haklarının formlarının Türkçe ders kitaplarındaki temsili üzerinden değerlendirmeler yapılmaktadır. Çocuk, incelenen Türkçe ders kitaplarında çoğunlukla `pasif`, `muhtaç` ve `yetişkine bağımlı` olarak temsil edilirken, yetişkin aynı ders kitaplarında `mükemmel` ve `güçlü` olarak inşa edilmiştir. Çoğu bulgunun merkezinde `yetişkincilik (adultism)`'in etkisi yani yetişkinin çocuk üzerindeki gücü ve baskısı olduğu görülmektedir. Bu tezde; ders kitaplarındaki hakim anlayışın çocukları `hak sahibi birey`, `özne` ve `eyleyen` olarak ele almadığını ve bu anlayışın çocuğun katılım hakının anlamlı şekilde hayata geçmesi önünde engel oluşturduğu ileri sürülmektedir. Çocuk katılımı bağlamında çocukların inisiyatif aldığı kısıtlı sayıdaki örneklerde göze çarpan önemli bir bulgu ise hak temelli yaklaşımdan ziyade yardım temeli bir perspektifin yer almasıdır. Bu çalışma, çocukların `hak sahibi` olarak temsil edildiği, yetişkin iktidarının sorgulandığı ve çocukların görüşlerinin yetişkinler tarafından dikkate alındığı içeriklerin ders kitaplarında yer alması gerektiğini ortaya koymaktadır. This thesis aims at examining the relationships between adults and children in the context of childhood construction and child participation in Turkish language textbooks by using the methods of content and critical discourse analyses. It was analyzed the textual and visual samples in eight Turkish language textbooks from 1st-grade to 8th-grade within the framework of the theories about childhood and child participation. The textbooks, which is defined as `official knowledge` of the society by Apple, reflect and support the dominant normative discourse in the societies. In this thesis, there is an inquiry to find out the childhood perceptions of adults, the existing childhood construction, the power relations between the adult and the child and the forms of the children's right to participate considering their representations in Turkish language textbooks. The child is mostly represented as a `passive`, `needy` and `adult-dependent` figure in the examined Turkish language textbooks whereas the adult is constructed as `perfect` and `powerful` figure in the same textbooks. The effect of adultism is observed in most of the findings, in other words, the adult's power and oppression on the child constitutes the main part of the findings. This thesis argues that the textbooks do not approach the children as a right-holders individual, a subject and a social agent and that this approach poses an obstacle to the realization of meaningful child participation. In the context of child participation, one of the remarkable findings is that there is a charity-based approach rather than a right-based approach in the child-initiated examples. This study demonstrates that the textbooks should include the contents in which children are represented as `right-holders`, the adults question their own power on the children, and children's views are taken into consideration by the adults. 143

`Masumiyet` kavramı sayısız sosyo-kültürel ve edebi anlatıları ile insanın biliş yolculuğunun başlangıcıdır. Masumiyet için edebi ve psikanalitik bir tanım ortaya koyarak, insanın masumiyetinin bilişsel yolculuğunda deneyime tabi ve kademeli olarak kaybı, evrensel bir çerçeveye alınabilir. Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, Gustave Jung, Julia Kristeva ve Margaret Schönberger Mahler'in çalışmalarında da olduğu üzere, pek çok psikanalitik teori, bu yolculuğu açıklar. Bu tez; Jacques Lacan'ın Üç Dönem Teorisi temel alınarak ve alandaki başka pek çok teori ile de desteklenerek büyüme sürecinin ve masumiyetin kaybının evrenselliğini ispat etmektir. Birincil yöntem, seçilmiş edebi eserlerin yakın okuması yapılarak insan bilişine dair sosyo-kültürel örnekler sunmak ve insanın bilişsel süreci ile büyümenin temel taşı olan bu Üç Dönemi, seçilen eserler üzerinden analiz etmektir: Kendi, Öteki ve Gerçek. The notion of `Innocence` is the starting point of the human cognitive journey which can be observed through countless socio-cultural and literary narratives. With establishing a literary and psychoanalytical definition for innocence and its gradual loss through experience human cognitive journey can be put into a universal frame. Various psychoanalytical theories portray this cognitive journey including the works of Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, Gustave Jung, Julia Kristeva and Margaret Schönberger Mahler. For the purpose of this thesis, I aim to illustrate the universality of growing up process and losing one's innocence in a psychoanalytical pattern mainly based on Jacques Lacan's Theory of the three registers supported by other theories in the field. The primary methodology is to make a close reading of select literary works to present socio-cultural examples of human cognition which will dictate three distinct modalities of the psyche: The Self, The Other and The Real that are both foundations of the cognition and the human journey of growing up. 114

Bu araştırma sesin, toplumsal mekanın kurulumunda ve yeniden üretimindeki rolünü tartışmaktadır. Her an, her yerde var olan sesi incelemek için bu olgunun kaynağının ve mekanının sorgulanmasına ihtiyaç vardır. Bu bağlamda, sesin kentsel mekandaki rolünü ele almada, endüstriyel ve elektrik devrimleri sonrası radikal bir biçimde dönüşen şehrin morfoloji ve demografi bilgisi gerekir. Modern dünyanın kentselleşme süreciyle birlikte ele alınan ses peyzajları kavramı, gündelik hayat dinamiklerini değerlendiren kent teorileri (Simmel, Benjamin, Lefebvre, Debord, de Certeau) ve ritimanaliz (Lefebvre), psikocoğrafya (Debord) gibi deneyim pratikleriyle beraber incelenir. Materyal ve kültürel bir gerçeklik sunan ses, fiziksel ve toplumsal bir olgu olarak çok yönlü bir tartışma alanı açar. Istanbul'un yaşadığı endüstrileşme ve kentleşme sürecinin merkezinde kalan ve Galata'nın tarihe açılan kapılarından Karaköy, mekansallığında sürekli bir akışı, dinamizimi barındırır. Bu devinim beraberinde değişimi kaçınılmaz kılarken, sesin etkileşimli ve şimdi üzerinden kurduğu mekan Stavrides'in 'eşik mekanlar'ı nosyonuyla değerlendirilir, bu durum toplumsal mekanın yeniden üretimini tartışmasına çok boyutlu bir alan açar.İlerleyen bölümlerde, ses, çevre ve birey arasında süreklilik arz eden ilişki, fiziksel, algısal, sosyal ve kültürel bağlamda tartışılmıştır. Ses peyzajları mekanın toplumsal yeniden üretimi sürecinde bir sosyal alan olarak değerlendirmenin gerekli olduğu sonucuna varmıştır. Alan araştırmasının gerçekleştiği, Karaköy'ün son iki yüzyılın kentselleşme tarihini taşıdığı coğrafyasında, demografik ve morfolojik araştırmalar kronolojik sırayla ele alınmıştır. Şehrin kültürel, sosyal ve fiziksel bir devinim bölgesi olarak karşımıza çıkan Karaköy'ün gündelik hayat deneyimi ses peyzajlarıyla tartışılmıştır. Bu bağlamda Karaköy'ün ses peyzajları, toplumsal olanın kurulmakta olduğu eşik mekanlar olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Ses yürüyüşleri, anket çalışmarı ve ses haritalamaları gibi deneyim üzerine kurulu kentsel ses peyzajları çalışmalarında kabul görmüş yöntemler uygulanarak, sonuçlar toplumsal mekanın kurulumunun analizinde değerlendirilmiştir.Bulgular, sesin kentsel mekan deneyimindeki kalıcı ve geçici etkilerini ortaya çıkartırken, sesin toplumsal mekanın kurulumunuda aktif rolünü tartışmaya açmaktadır. Bu bağlamda ses peyzajları kentin yüzlerce yıllık katmanlarını analizine ve toplumsal mekanın yeniden üretimi süreçlerini anlamaya imkan tanımaktadır. The aim of this study is to present a basic discussion of whether sound can be a factor in the process of the reproduction of social space. In order to examine this ubiquitous phenomenon, sound needs to be traced back to its source, the physical environment to which it is attached. In this context, the role of sound in urban areas requires urban morphological and demographical knowledge and this knowledge establishes the physical features of a sonic environment which was radically transformed after the industrial and the electricity revolutions. It is therefore necessary to examine the phenomenon through its historical roots which correspond to the 'modern' era, which has been practised by several thinkers from a variety of geographies. The common ground of these first studies was rapid urbanization. On the other hand, 'the experience of urban' was also becoming the question asked by modern intellectuals. Some of them, for instance, preferred to walk through the modern city and to narrate the modern way of life critically, for the first time, from the perspective of the individual, unlike the previous model- based analyses of urban sociologists and planners. In particular, Simmel, Benjamin, Lefebvre, de Certeau and Debord all structured theories and pioneering discussions of everyday life and the experience of space within this perspective.Adopting an interpretive approach for this current study, I began by re-evaluating Lefebvre's 'rhythmanalysis' and Debord's 'psychogeography' for my research area, the sonic environment of Karaköy, in order to question the use of experience-based practices in the field of soundscape studies. In addition to these pioneers, a relatively new concept, the 'threshold spaces' of Stavros Stavrides, has also been used here as a basis for understanding soundscapes.In this thesis, the continuums of sound, environment and individual experiences are discussed in the physical, perceptual, social and cultural contexts. It has been concluded that it is necessary to evaluate soundscape as a social sphere within the process of the social reproduction of space. This conclusion led me to study the soundscape of Karaköy as a threshold space where the everyday flows of people, goods and services are considerably dynamic and diverse. In order to portray the sound environment of the area, the urban transformation of the Galata region is studied both morphologically and demographically. Some of the well-known soundscape research methods such as soundwalking and sound mapping were adopted for Karaköy's urban analysis. The recorded soundwalks help to identify the background and foreground sounds of the sonic environment. In addition to the soundwalks, a public survey was conducted to explore daily users' sound experiences. The findings show that sound has a critical role in everyday life for people who experience the space in a social context. As a final remark, it is concluded that sound must be also seen as one of the significant dimensions of urban analysis for scholars who seek to understand the urban strata multi- and/or omni-directionally in which sound has carried the historical roots of urban experiences for hundreds of years, and this long-lived sonic process also constitutes the process of the social reproduction of space. 105

Politik ve hukuksal alanlarda bir düşünür olan Giorgio Agamben'in geliştirdiği 'kutsal insan' kavramı Struma yolcularının durumunu açıklayabilmek için kullanılabilir. Romanyalı Yahudi yolcular – ki onlar Türk vatandaşı olmayan 'kutsal insan'lardı – vaat edilen topraklara yaptıkları transit yolculukta Türkiye sularında mahsur kaldılar. 1940'ların atmosferinde tüm temel ellerinden alındı. Böylelikle Struma gemisi yasanın askıya alındığı, hukuksuz bir mekân haline geldi. Yasanın askıya alındığı bir mekân da bu düşünme pratiği içerisinde bir kamp olarak değerlendirilebilir.Bu tez, olağanüstü halin kutsal zamanlarında, egemenliğin limitsiz gücünün muğlak kamplar yaratabileceğini (gemilerin barakalar olarak varsayılabileceğini) tasvir etmeye çalışmaktadır.Giorgio Agamben'in tartışmalı argümanları bu kapsamda daha derine inerek araştırmayı sağlamıştır. Agamben'in 'olağanüstü hâl' kavramı birden fazla fenomenle kesişmektedir. Bunlar arasında; Foucault, biyopolitika, Türk azınlık politikaları, Struma olayı ve kamp kavramı bulunmaktadır. Tezimin nihai hedefi şimdiye kadar söylenenlerin ötesine gitmektir. Non-citizen (homo sacer) Romanian Jewish Passengers in transit to the Promised Land (Palestine) were kept on the Turkish Sea during the 1940s when all institutions were banned to protect their fundamental rights. Eventually, the ship of Struma became a place outside of law, i.e. a place where law is suspended. Such a place can be considered to be a camp within the scope of a practice of thought that follows Agamben.This thesis tries to understand how the unlimited power of sovereignty creates ambiguous camps (ship as a barrack) at the sacred times of the state of exception.The controversial arguments by Giorgio Agamben allow to delve deeper in his context. In this work, Agamben's 'state of exception' coincides with several phenomena including bio politics, Turkish minority politics, the case of Struma and the notion of a camp. Bu tezde, okuma ediminin kendiliğin kurulması ve dönüştürülmesi bakımından ne gibi imkanlar sağladığı tartışılmaktadır. Bu tartışma okumanın etkisi üzerine başlasa da, süreç içerisinde ele alınan meselelerin etkilenmenin genel olarak hayatımızda nasıl bir yeri olduğu noktasına açılmasını umuyorum. Etkilenme hayatımızın her alanında kaçınılmaz bir durum olup onu ne bakımdan ele aldığımız değişkenlik gösterir. Burada, etkilenme öteki ile ilişkilenmek olarak ele alınmakta ve bu ilişkiselliğin hayatı nasıl olumlayan ve çoğaltan bir alan açacağı sorgulanmaktadır. Bu alan, sevgi temelli bir yaklaşım sayesinde bir diyalog kurma yoluna gitmeyi ve ötekini adlandırmayı ve onun tarafından adlandırılmayı çağrıştırmaktadır. In this thesis, I argue that the act of reading brings about an ethical potentiality for self-formation and transformation. Even though the discussion starts from the influence of the act of reading, it will then hopefully expand to a broader perspective on influence in general. Influence is inevitable in our lives, nevertheless, how we handle that subject may be different. Here, it is questioned how being influenced means being in relation with the other and that provides a space for making life affirmed and intensified. That space then is imagined to be opened up with love, in the meaning that a loving approach is about being in dialogue with the other, and addressing and being addressed by the other. In line with that, while making a swerve from Harold Bloom's project that is based on the influence-anxiety, it is argued how an affinity of influence can be possible. Likewise, how Bloom's theory of poetry may move towards a theory of life is discussed. Finally, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's ideas on reparative reading and her book A Dialogue on Love are taken as the foundations for discussing the ethical possibilities of relationality that is whether with a text or another human being. 60

Bu tezde, iki önemli filozofun, Aristoteles ve Nietzsche'nin bir karşılaştırması aracılığıyla ahlaki ve etik bir vaat olarak mutluluk kavramı üzerine bir tartışma yürütmekteyim. Amacım, Nietzsche'nin felsefesi üzerinden, insan için ne tür bir özgürlük ve iyi olma hali hayal edebileceğimizi tartışmaktır. Ayrıca `iyi yaşamı insan için nihai bir amaca sahip ahlaki veya etik bir sorumluluk olarak görmenin ne anlama geldiği` veya `gerçekten bize mutluluk vadeden bir nihai amacımızın olup olmadığı` gibi sorular sormaktayım. In this thesis, I conduct a discussion on the concept of happiness as a moral/ethical promise mainly with a comparison of two important philosophers: Aristotle and Nietzsche. My aim is to debate what kind of human freedom and flourishing we can imagine based on Nietzsche's philosophy. I also ask questions like `what does it mean to think of the good human life as our moral/ethical aim?` or `is there really a promise of happiness that we should seek as our final end?`. In the line of these questions, I focus on whether the pursue of happiness opens or conceals some political possibilities for freedom of a person or a culture? Based on his criticism of the Christian morality and its bad influence on the modern spirit, Nietzsche offers returning to a noble evaluation of the good for a tasteful and healthful life. In this direction, I also examine if it is possible to return to an Aristotelian or Stoic account of human flourishing (eudaimonia). For this investigation, I basically focus on what Nietzsche means by self-knowledge as the necessary condition of creating new values and living according to them and what the role of our passions is in this process. This is also closely related to the question of whether self-knowledge is an ultimate end, by promising a kind of happiness where we overcome our passions and suffering, or it serves for something else, for instance a life experiment welcoming suffering as a very vital part of our life and passions as well as rational judgements as a part of ourselves. 69

Bu çalışmada, Türkiye'de yoksulluk sorununun nasıl yaşandığı, yoksulluğu ortaya çıkaran veya derinleştiren dinamiklerin neler olduğu konusu toplumsal cinsiyet perspektifi ile detaylı şekilde incelenmiştir. Çalışma kapsamında yoksulluğa dair toplumdaki temel varsayımlar ile bireysel deneyimlerin nasıl ayrıştığı üzerine odaklanılmıştır. Yoksulluk sorununun mikro ölçekte anlaşılmasına yönelik olarak çalışılmıştır. 'Kadın ve erkeklerin yoksulluk deneyimleri arasında nasıl farklılıklar vardır?' sorusu çalışmanın odaklandığı temel noktadır. Kadınların yoksulluk deneyimlerini anlayabilmek için yapılan bu çalışmada Aile ve Sosyal Politikalar Bakanlığı başta olmak üzere diğer kamu kurumlarından sosyal yardım alan 8 kadın ile yüz yüze görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Görüşme yapılan kişiler ile Aile ve Sosyal Politikalar Bakanlığı bünyesinde yer alan İstanbul içerisinde yer alan bir Sosyal Hizmet Merkezi'nde görev yapan sosyal çalışmacılar aracılığıyla iletişim sağlanmıştır. Çalışmanın araştırma yöntemi olarak kişilerin detaylı aktarımları sağlayabilmesi için yarı yapılandırılmış sorular ile derinlemesine mülakatların yapılması tercih edilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonucunda, kadınların yoksulluk deneyimlerinin psiko-sosyal gelişimleri açısından önemli sonuçları olduğu görülmüştür. Yoksulluğun yapısal, makro sebepleri dışarıda bırakılarak bu durumun sebebini kişisel yetersizlikleri ya da adil dünya inancı ile açıkladıkları görülmüştür. Kadınların yoksulluk durumu sonucunda toplumsal hiyerarşiler ve eşitsizlikler ile karşılaştıkları gözlenmiştir. Kadınlar yoksullukla mücadele ederken aile ve akrabalık ilişkilerinden destek göremediklerinden bir dış güce ihtiyaç duymuşlar, bakanlıklara, belediyelere ve kamu kurumlarına başvurmuşlardır. Bunun yanı sıra tekstil atölyelerinden alınan, evde yapılan küçük el işleri ya da temizlik işleri kadınların yoksullukla baş etmek konusunda en sık başvurdukları çözüm arayışlarından olmuştur. Kadın yoksulluğunun yok edilebilmesi için sosyal yardımların ve yardım içeriklerinin yeniden düzenlenmesine duyulan ihtiyaç gözlenmiştir. In this study, how poverty problem is experienced in Turkey, the dynamics about poverty's occurrence and process, were examined in details within the perspective of gender. Also this study focuses on, main assumptions about poverty and disintegration of individual experiences. Trying to understand poverty problem in micro-size is studied. The main question of this study is 'what kind of differences were between the women's and men's poverty experiences?'. To comprehend women's poverty experiences, face to face meetings done with eight women that were taking social aid from public institutions, especially the Ministry of Family and Social Policies. Reaching these individuals provided by social workers of Gungoren Social Care Center which is in the constitution of Ministry of Family and Social Policies. Method of the research is in-depth interview with semi structured questions due to the necessity of individual's detailed transfers. Results have shown that, women's poverty experiences have significant consequences about their psycho-social developments. Apart from poverty's macro and structural reasons, this situation is explained with belief in a just world or feeling of inadequacy by individuals. It is observed that women encounter with social hierarchy and inequalities as a conclusion of poverty. Women could not get any support from family or other relatives and applied to ministries, municipalities and public institutions. Apart from these, minimal manual works done from home, cleaning works, textile mills were the main solution seeking places women applied off. Reorganization of social aids and context of help is necessary for the end of women poverty. 100

Günümüzde Dünya üzerindeki sınırlar, yaygınlaşan internet kullanımı ile beraber varlığını kısmen yitirmiş durumda. Sosyal medyanın giderek artan kullanımı ile beraber, çeşitli nedenlerle konuşulmayan, geri plana atılan konuların görünürlüğü de artıyor. Kadınların hayatın her alanında muhatap oldukları eril şiddet bu konulardan sadece biri. Evrensel bir sorun halinde önümüzde duran eril şiddet, sosyal medya üzerinden çeşitli biçimlerde varlığını sürdürmeye devam ediyor. Oldukça yaygın olmasına rağmen sosyal ve ekonomik baskıların yanı sıra ailenin ataerkil yapısı gibi pek çok nedenden ötürü kadınlar yaşadıkları taciz ve şiddeti sadece aile dışı yakın çevreleri ile paylaşabiliyor. Fakat gelişen teknolojinin getirdiği imkanlarla, bahsettiğimiz tablo değişiyor: müdahil olunduğunda kamusal alan özelliği kazanabilen sosyal medyada, kadınlar, dilerlerse anonim de kalarak tacize karşı mücadele edecekleri bir mecra yaratabiliyorlar. Kadınlar hemen her gün sosyal medya üzerinden çeşitli tacizlere maruz kalırken, bu taciz ve şiddet olaylarını yine sosyal medya üzerinden teşhir ederek soruna dikkat çekmeye devam ediyor. Ekim 2017'de Twitter üzerinden '#metoo' etiketiyle kadınların maruz kaldıkları taciz olaylarını paylaşması oldukça ses getirdi ve farklı ülkelerde kadınlar kendilerine tacizde bulunan erkekleri bu yolla teşhir etti. Kadınların dalga dalga yayılan 'itiraf'ları, dünyanın her yerinde binlerce kadının maruz kaldığı taciz ve şiddet hakkında çoğu zaman konuşamadıklarını da gösterdi.Bu çalışmada Twitter özelinde sosyal medya üzerinden tacize maruz kalan kadınların tacizi önlenmek ve kendilerini korumak için tacize/şiddete karşı gerçekleştirmiş oldukları mücadele pratiklerini, bilhassa teşhir pratiği ve teşhir sonrası süreçleri kadınların bakış açısıyla betimlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Cinsel tacizin fiziksel temasla sınırlı olmadığı, özellikle sosyal medyada söylem üzerinden nasıl ve ne biçimde sürdüğüne dair tacize uğrayan kadınlarla yapılan görüşmeler bu çalışmada analiz edilmiş ve beş bölümde tamamlanmıştır. Birinci bölüm kadının tarihsel süreçler içerisinden bugüne kadar değişen konumu ele alınmıştır. İkinci bölümde ise şiddetin tanımı ve şiddet çeşitlerine dair tartışma yürütülmüştür. Üçüncü bölüm, sosyal medyada kadınların maruz kaldığı cinsel taciz incelenmiştir. Bu incelemede Twitter'da oldukça ses getiren ve tacizcileri teşhir eden 'Tacizci Veri Tabanı' hesabının paylaşmış olduğu teşhir içerikleri incelenerek tacizin hangi biçimlerde gerçekleştiği üzerine tartışılmıştır. Dördüncü bölümde ise, Twitter'da cinsel tacize maruz kalan kadınlarla yapılan görüşmeler aktarılmış ve bu görüşmeler tartışma kısmında değerlendirilmiştir. With ever-increasing use of social media, the visibility of the issues, which have not been discussed or have been ignored for various reasons, are increased too. The masculine violence which women face everyday in all aspect of their life is only one of these issues. Violence against women, standing as a universal problem, continues to exist in various forms through social media. Despite the widespread prevalence of violence and harassment, women can only share violence and harassment experience with their close environment outside their own family due to the social and economic pressure as well as patriarchal nature of the family. However, this picture has been changing by the opportunities provided by developing technology: in social media which can obtain the status of public space, women can create a channel to fight against harassment when they involve, even remaining anonymous if they want to be. While women are subjected to various harassment through social media almost every day, they continue to draw attention to the problem by exposing these harassment and violence incidents through social media. In October 2017, women shared their harassment stories on Twitter with #metoo tag which became a cause `célèbres` and in this way, women in different countries exposed the men who harassed them. Women ripple confession also showed that all around the world, thousands of women could not often talk about the exposed harassment and violence.In this study, the women practices of struggle against harassment and violence, preventing from them happening again and self defense of women, especially the exposure practice and the post-exposure process on the social media specifically on Twitter are intended to described from the perspective of women. In this study, it has been analyzed that sexual harassment is not limited to physical contact and it can be sustained especially through on social media discourse. How and in which form it can be sustained on social media have been analyzed via interviews with women exposed to harassment and the analysis has been given under five sections. The first section gives the changing status of women from historical processes to today. In the second section, the definition of violence and the types of violence have been discussed. Third section examines the sexual harassment of women in the social media. In this review, the content of social media posts of Twitter account `Harassment Data Base` (`Tacizci Veri Tabanı`), which is a cause `célèbres` social media account that exhibits the harassment, have been discussed and in which form of harassment was exposed has been identified. In the fourth section, interviews with women exposed to sexual harassment on Twitter were reported and these interviews were evaluated in the discussion section. Popüler kültür ve küreselleşmenin bir etkisi olarak tüketim kültürü, toplumlarda önemli değişikliklere neden olmakta, insanlar artık sosyalleşme mecrası olarak sosyal medyayı kullanmaktadır. İnsanlar özgürlük arayışlarının, toplumsal ve bireysel etkileşimlerinin odağına sosyal medyayı koymaya başlamış, gözetleme kültürü ve hızlı tüketim anlayışı, toplum ve insanların gündelik yaşamlarındaki davranış ve kararlarını en çok etkileyen unsurlar haline gelmiştir. With the development of technology and social change, globalization has led to the emergence of popular culture with the consumption culture. Consumption culture as an effect of globalization and popular culture causes significant changes in societies, and people now use social media as a socializing medium. People have begun to put social media at the center of social and individual interactions and search for freedom. Culture of surveillance and trends of fast consumption have become the most influential factors in the behavior and decision making processes of societies and people's everyday lives. It can be said that social media has a significant influence on popular cultural and social behavior, and that the focus is on the new mass media and social media usage emerging as a result of globalization. Bu tezin yazılmasındaki temel amaç, Almanca edebiyatın önemli isimlerinden İsviçreli yazar Max Frisch'in 1957 yılına ait ünlü eseri Homo Faber'i, Sigmund Freud'un 1919'da kaleme aldığı Das Unheimliche makalesinin bel kemiği olan 'Unheimlichkeit' (tekinsizlik) kavramı çerçevesinde ele alarak eseri, modern insanın trajedisi olarak incelemektir. Homo Faber, yazıldığı İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrası, bilimsel ilerleme ve teknolojinin tek geçer akçe olduğu dönem itibariyle, bireyin kimliğini oluşturma süreci, toplum tarafından kendine biçilen rol ve doğa/kendi doğası ile yaşadığı çatışma ve nihayetinde vuku bulan yabancılaşma sürecini etkin ve eleştirel bir anlatımla ortaya koymaktadır. Bu çalışmada yöntem olarak edebi metin olay örgüsü, karakter analizleri ve roman kahramanının dönüşüm süreci bağlamında incelenmiş ve 'tekinsizlik' kavramı üzerinden, modern insanın teknolojiye boyun eğerek kendi doğasına nasıl yabancılaştığı, benliğini nasıl ötekileştirdiği ve sonunda yaşadığı kaçınılmaz trajedi ele alınmıştır. The main motive behind writing this thesis was to associate the famous novel Homo Faber (1957) by Max Frisch, one of the most important names of German literature, with the psychological concept of the 'uncanny', which was coined by Sigmund Freud in his essay Das Unheimliche (1919) and to analyze it in the context of the tragedy of modern man. Homo Faber was written after World War II, in an era where scientific and technological progresses had a great importance. Against this background, the novel portrays the process of identity building of an individual, the role s/he was given by the society, his/her conflict with nature and with himself/herself, and as the final result the 'alienation' process as a criticism of modernity. The analysis of the content, the characters and the transformation of the protagonist were adopted as the methodology of the thesis. This analysis shows us in the context of 'uncanny', how modern man gets alienated from his/her own nature and identity and the unavoidable tragedy s/he experiences in the end by surrendering to technology. 99

Karşıt kamusallık, alternatif medya, feminist alternatif medya, kadın odaklı habercilik, feminist hareket, jineoloji, Kürt kadın medyası literatüründen beslenen bu çalışma, 19 Aralık 2016'da `medyanın diline çuvaldız niyetine` mottosuyla yayına giren, feminist mücadele medyası pratiği olarak Kürt kadın gazetecileri tarafından pratik edilen internet haber sitesi Gazete Şûjin'ın, kadın odaklı haberciliği `nasıl` gerçekleştirdiğini ve süreci belirleyen dinamikleri tartışmayı amaçlamaktadır.Çalışma kapsamında, feminist metodoloji perspektifinde medya etnografisi yöntemiyle Gazete Şûjin'ın hangi alanlarda karşıt kamusallık oluşturduğu, yayın politikasının ne olduğu ve kadın, dayanışma odaklı haberciliğin nasıl deneyimlendiği araştırılmıştır. Gazete Şûjin'ın Türkiye'de başarılı bir feminist alternatif medya deneyimi olduğu ortaya konmuştur. Those places that are excluded from the dominant public sphere, those who cannot find a place in the dominant public sphere and form their own alternative discourse are located in counter-public sphere. This study, being situated within the literatures on counter-public sphere, alternative media, feminist alternative media, women-centred journalism, feminist movements and jineoloji, Kurdish women media, examines an online feminist journal called 'Gazete Şûjin ', which is run by Kurdish women journalists with a motto of 'medyanın diline çuvaldız niyetine' [packing needle for the media discourse]. It focuses on how the journal practices a women-centred journalism and the dynamics that determine these practices. The research explores the area in which Gazete Şûjin forms a counter-public sphere, its publishing policies and the ways it practices women-solidarity-centred journalism, through applying a media ethnographic technique from a feminist methodological perspective. It argues that Gazete Şûjin is a successful feminist alternative media. 114

Bu çalışma, taşranın sıkıntısı ve büyük şehrin melankolisine eleştirel potansiyelleri bağlamında Nuri Bilge Ceylan sinemasından bakmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu kapsamda, sıkıntı ve melankoli kavramları farklı iki mekan ve onların modernite deneyimleriyle bağlantılı olarak sorgulanmıştır. Taşra ve büyük şehir deneyimi bağlamında ele alınan sıkıntı ve melankoli kavramlarının taşıdıkları sorgulama potansiyeli çalışmanın ana eksenini oluşturmaktadır. Temel amaç, sinemanın temsil gücünden yararlanarak sıkıntı ve melankoli kavramlarının okunmasına katkı yapmaya çalışmaktır.Kavramlara ve mekanlara referansla incelenen teorik tartışmalar, izini sürmek üzere belirli temaları keşfetmeye olanak vermiştir. Bu sayede, sıkıntı ve taşra bağlamında sıkışmışlık, yoksunluk, hoşnutsuzluk, durağanlık, sıradanlık ve farkındalık; melankoli ve büyük şehir bağlamında kayıp, vaat, suçluluk, ideal ve hüsran ana temalar olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Tüm bunların izinin sürüleceği kültürel zemin ise taşra sıkıntısı ve büyük şehir melankolisinin temsilini barındıran Nuri Bilge Ceylan filmleri olacaktır. Bu anlamda, bu araştırmanın metodu üç filmin anlatı ve anlatım analizine dayanacaktır: Mayıs Sıkıntısı (1999), Uzak (2002) ve Kış Uykusu (2014).Taşra ve büyük şehir karşılaşması, bilinç düzeyinde ve ifadesi mümkün olan sıkıntının yansımaları ve bilinçdışında gerçekleşen ve kaybı inkar eden melankolinin izlerinde mekanın farklılaşan deneyiminin etkisini ortaya koymuştur. Analizin sonucunda, bu farklılaşan deneyimleri ortaklaştıran bir nosyon olarak aidiyetsizlik ortaya çıkmıştır. Sıkıntı ve melankoli okumasıyla birlikte düşünülebilecek aidiyetsizlik tartışması araştırmanın devamı için potansiyel taşımaktadır. In this study, boredom of the country and melancholy of the metropolis are inquired in terms of their critical potentials through the cinema of Nuri Bilge Ceylan. The concept of boredom and the concept of melancholy are explored in relation to the context and the experience of modernity. Critical potentials of boredom and melancholy considering the country and the metropolis constitute the main axis of the discussion of this study. It is aimed to contribute to the reading of boredom and melancholy by using the power of the cinematic representation.Theoretical discussions bring particular themes for analysis considering concepts and contexts. Themes of being stuck, deprivation, dissatisfaction, stability, ordinariness and awareness will be traced in terms of boredom and the country; and themes of loss, guilt, promise, ideal and frustration will be traced in terms of melancholy and the metropolis. In contextualizing the discussion, films of Nuri Bilge Ceylan will be illuminating, because they offer a field of representation for analyzing boredom of the country and melancholy of the metropolis. Therefore, the methodology of this study will depend on the analysis of narrative and narration in Clouds of May (1999), Distant (2002) and Winter Sleep (2014).As a result of the confrontation between the country and the metropolis, reflections of boredom, which are explicit and enunciable at the conscious level, and traces of melancholy, which disavow loss and operate at the unconscious level, reveal the impact of the differentiating experience of the context. Furthermore, analysis brings out the notion of homelessness, which points a similarity in these different experiences. Homelessness related to the reading of boredom and melancholy discloses a potential for further research. 98

Bu çalışmada ne olduğu ve sınırları tartışmalı bir kavram olan iktidarın, modernleşentoplumda yaşadığı evrim ve ürettiği biyoiktidar, hegemonya gibi kavramlar bağlamındakamu spotu mecrası ele alınmıştır. Kamu spotuna ev sahipliği yapan televizyon birideolojik aygıt olarak kabul edilmiş ve eleştirel düşüncelerle tartışılmıştır. Genel kanı kamuspotlarının siyasal yada ideolojik bir mesaj taşımadığı, sadece toplum faydasına olduğuyönünde olsa da, en başarılı anına ulaşmış ve görünmezleşmiş olan ideolojinin varlığıhissedilmektedir. İnformation films, has been regarded as anideological device and has been critically discussed. Although public opinion does notattach a political or ideological message to PİF, it is only for the benefit of the society, theideology of the most successful - that is why invisible- is felt. In order to identify theseideological communities, two PİFs on the topic of `work safety`, which was designed bythe Ministry of Labor and Social Security, were analyzed by means of analysis ofdiscourse, which clearly showed the relationship between the ruling and dependent classes.In addition, in order to comprehend the public information film area in detail, the solutionsthey have tried to avoid in order not to contradict to the current capital of the issues and thesolutions in which the films have escaped to suggest. 139

Bu çalışma, eşitsizlikler üzerine inşa edilen insanlık tarihinin en temel meselesi olan ve aynı zamanda genel özgürlük ve eşitlik sorunlarını çözme potansiyelini en çok taşıyan kadın özgürlüğü ve eşitliği konusunu günümüz Türkiye'si ve esas olarak da HDP Kadın Meclisleri bağlamında incelemeye çalışmaktadır.Bu amaçla çalışma, toplumsal cinsiyet ve feminizm teorik arka planı ve literatürü esas alınarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Böylece Türkiye'de kadın mücadelesinin gelişimi ile HDP ve öncülü partilerde sorunun ele alınış ve gelişim süreci incelendikten sonra kadın meclisleri içerisinde aktif görev alan kadınların görüşleri ışığında HDP ve kadın politikalarının mevcut durumu anlaşılmaya çalışılmıştır. Gerçekleştirilen araştırma göstermiştir ki pratik çalışma alanında kimi sorunlar ve eksiklikler olmakla birlikte HDP ve kadın meclisleri kadın hakları mücadelesinin ortaya çıkardığı teorik birikim ve söylem kültürünü program, bildirge, yönetmelik vb. gibi siyasal metinlerine yansıtmış ve siyasal organizasyonlar arasında göz ardı edilemeyecek bir fark yaratmıştır.Çalışmada temel olarak nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılmış, betimsel analiz ve görüşme yöntemi esas alınmıştır. Görüşmeler sonucunda elde edilen bulgular yorumlanarak çalışma tamamlanmıştır.Anahtar Kelimeler: HDP, kadın meclisleri, feminizm, toplumsal cinsiyet This thesis aims to examine within the context of contemporary Turkey and, in particular, with respect to HDP's Women Assemblies, the question of women's struggle for freedom and equality, which is the most fundamental problem of the history of human kind, and which has the highest potential of bringing a solution to the problems of equality and freedom in general,. Towards this objective, the argument of the thesis unfolds mainly by referring to the theories and the literature concerning gender and feminism. Accordingly, following a scrutinization of the development of women's struggle in Turkey and of the approach of HDP and her predecessors to this struggle, an attempt is made to understand and evaluate HDP's present policies concerning women in the light of the opinions of the active members of Women Assemblies. The research demonstrates that despite the problems and insufficiencies in practice, HDP and Women Assemblies have successfully incorporated the theoretical accumulation and discursive culture of the struggle for women's rights into their political texts and their program, and that they have made a remarkable difference with respect to other political organizations. This thesis is based on qualitative methods including descriptive analysis and interviews, and it is completed with an interpretation of the corresponding findings. Kültür sürekli değişen ve birbirini etkileyen unsurdur. Etkileşimin yoğun olarak göründüğü alanlardan biri görsel sanat ve modadır. Georg Simmel, modayı değişme isteği ve taklit etmek olarak açıklamıştır. Modada ki `yeni` kavramının doğuşunu farklı kültürlerle etkileşimi ve ilham alması önemli yer teşkil etmektedir. Sanayi devrimden sonra Batı'nın Doğu'yu etkilemesi ön plana çıkmıştır. Fakat Doğu'nun da Batı'nın üzerinde izleri görülmektedir. Peki Batı ve Doğu, kendi sanatını ve kültürünü zenginleştirmek için nasıl birbirlerinden ilham almış ve faydalanmışlardır?Bu tezde Batı ve Doğu'nun birbirleri ile etkileşimleri incelenmektedir. Özellikle tezin odağını bu nedenle; etkileşimin yoğun görüldüğü görsel sanatı, moda ve güzellik kavramları açısından bunları anlamak ve karşılaştırmaları üzerine kurdum.Öncelikle genel olarak Doğu ülkelerin genel batılılaşma sürecini ve batılılaşma karakterinin nasıl olduğunu araştırdım. Dolayısıyla Doğu ülkelerin temsilcisi olarak Japonya ve Türkiye'yi ele aldım. Çünkü bu iki ülke Batıdan ayrı kendine özel bir kültüre sahip olup bir anda hızlı bir şekilde modernleştiği için Batıdan etkilenen Doğu ülkelerin temsilcisi olarak düşünülebilinir. Japonya ve Türkiye'nin genel modernleşmesini karşılaştırdıktan sonra modernleşme sürecisinde büyük değişimlerin görüldüğü kadın imgesini inceledim. Meiji dönemindeki Japonya ile Cumhuriyetin yeni kurulduğu dönemdeki Türkiye, Batı'nın kendilerinden önde olduğunu düşünerek kendilerini korumak amacıyla milliyetçilik duygusunu araç olarak kullanıp eski sistemi Batı'dan örnek alıp değiştirerek modernleşmeye geçilmesini sağlamışlardı.Görsel sanat ve kültürel açıdan Batı ve Doğu birbirlerini etkilemiştir. Doğu, Batı'ya egzotik unsurlarla sağduyunun değiştirmesine yardımcı olduğunu görebiliriz. Özellikle Japonya'da ki ukiyo-e ve Osmanlı'da ki dokumacılık gibi el sanatları, Batı'da ki sanatçıların ufkunu açmıştır. Batı'nın Doğu'da ki sanata karşı ilgisi modaya kadar uzanır. Örneğin, Japonya'da ki kimono ve Türkiye'de ki şalvar, Batı'da ki pratik kıyafetlerin ortaya çıkmasını sağladı.Batı'nın Doğu'yu etkilemesi, politik sisteminin değişimi ve kadın haklarının yükselmesiyle sınırlı kalmadı. Kültürel açıdan da büyük etkisi oldu. Örneğin, Doğu'dan ilham alarak ortaya çıkan rahat ve pratik kıyafetler, Paul Poiret ve Coco Chanel gibi modacılar tarafından geliştirilip yaygınlaştırıldı ve Doğu'da da dergilerde tanıtılarak tüketilmeye başlandı. Culture is the element that constantly changes and interacts. One of the areas that intense interaction can be seen is visual art and fashion. Georg Simmel describes fashion as a desire to change, and emulation. The inspirations from different cultures play an important part in the emergence of the `new` concept in fashion.After the Industrial Revolution, the Western culture has been influential on the East. However, it is also possible to see the influence of the Eastern culture on the West. So, how have the West and the East been inspired and benefited from each other to enrich their art and culture?In this thesis, interactions between East and West are examined. I especially focused on the interactions concerning visual arts, fashion, and beauty concepts since intense interaction is seen in those areas.First of all, I examined the general westernization process of Eastern countries, and bring the general character of westernization processes into sharp contrast. I select Japan and Turkey as representatives of Eastern countries that have been affected by the West, since these two countries have modernized quickly after establishing their own civilization. Meiji Japan and the early Republic period of Turkey took advantage of nationalism as a means of establishing modern nation-state. In this process, their female identity also had transformed drastically. Thus, influence of westernization movement on female identity in Japan and Turkey is also examined.In terms of visual art and cultural aspects, the West and the East have interacted intensely. The East helped to change Western common sense with its exotic elements. Especially, arts such as ukiyo-e in Japan, and Ottoman textile have gathered attention and inspired the Western artists. The interest of the West toward the Orient extends to fashion. Kimono in Japan and şalvar in Turkey had been seen as a quite novel design on the Westerners' eyes; and those designs inspired Western designers to create unconventional, yet practical clothes.On the other hand, when it comes to the influence of the West on the Eastern culture, it was not limited to the change of the political system and the rise of women's rights. It has also been a big influence in terms of visual culture and fashion. Comfortable and practical clothes inspired by the Orient have been developed and popularized by designers such as Paul Poiret, and have been introduced in magazines, and consumed by Japanese and Turkish upper-class. Many of them adopted eclectic fashion, which is composed of indigenous and Western fashion, since tradition persisted. Gradually, Eastern beauty sense also has been westernized, and many of the young generation pursued the ideal European look. As a result, the traditional East and the innovative West have inspired each other and undergone drastic changes affecting one another. And those changes went beyond imitating each other. 184

Bu çalışma, Sufizm/Tasavvuf ve psikanalizin karşılaştırmalı bir incelemesidir. Amacı; bu iki disiplin arasındaki benzerliklere, farklara, etkileşimlere ve potansiyel ilişki alanlarına işaret etmektedir. Bu niyetle, psikanalitik teorideki temel kavramlar, Sufizm'deki karşılıklarıyla yan yana incelenmiştir. Öncelikle iki disiplinin karşılaştırmalı birer özeti sunulmuş; daha sonra iki alandaki yol göstericiler, 'psikanalist' ve 'mürşid' figürleri incelenmiştir. Sonraki bölümlerde, 'transferans' ve 'rabıta' kavramları, 'direnç' olgusu ve 'nefs', ve son olarak da bu iki perspektifin 'ben'in yapısını nasıl ortaya koyduğu araştırılmıştır. Bu çalışma şöyle bir bulguya işaret eder: Sufizm, Hakikat ile varoluşsal bir bütünleşmeyi hedefler ve yaklaşımını bu hedefe göre belirlerken, psikanaliz böyle bir bütünleşmeyi önleyen bir bakış açısıyla kendini sınırlamaktadır. This thesis is a comparative study of Sufism/Tasawwuf and Psychoanalysis. It aims to point at the similarities, differences, the cross-breeding and the potential areas of interaction between these two disciplines. For this purpose, the fundamental concepts of psychoanalytic theory are examined side by side with their counterparts in Sufism. A comparative outline of the two disciplines is followed by a comparative study of their supervising figures; namely, the psychoanalyst and the murshid. This is followed by a comparative study of the transference relationship and rabıta, of the phenomena of resistance and the nafs, and finally of the structure of the 'I' as it is conceived by the two perspectives.This study points at the fact that Sufism aims for an existential unification with the Supreme Reality while psychoanalysis limits itself with a perspective that prevents such an integration. It is possible to trace and deepen the connection between these two disciplines in order to reach a more comprehensive understanding for the psychic realm of the human being. 92

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Hıristiyan ikonografisi ve İsa'nın çarmıha gerilme sahnesini anlatan temsillerden yola çıkarak, bedensel yaranın psikanalitik kuram bağlamında ima ettiği temsiliyeti ele almaktır. Yaranın görsel temsilinin çağrıştırdığı dişilik organının, yaralı bedeni tekinsiz bir mecraya dönüştürmesi bu çalışmayla irdelenmektedir. Yarayla ele alınan açıklık, bedeni çevreleyen derinin alışıla gelmiş bütünselliğini tehdit ederek, deriyi yırtıp açarak, bedeni alışılmadık, yabancı ve hatta bilinmeyen bir oluşuma dönüştürmektedir. Sigmund Freud'un kuramlaştırdığı `tekinsiz` kavramı, bedenin açıklığıyla birlikte kurgulanan tanımıyla oldukça örtüşmektedir. Derinin yırtılmasıyla bedeni çevreleyen zarfın başlıca görevinin ihlal edilmesinin sonucu olarak, artık beden tam anlamıyla `tekinsiz beden` olarak adlandırılmaktadır. Fransız psikanalist Didier Anzieu, `Deri-Ben` kavramıyla deriyi sadece fiziksel değil, aynı zamanda tini saran, çevreleyen ve örten bir temsiliyet olarak ele alır. Çocuğun beden yüzeyi deneyiminden hareketle, deri hem bir hafıza yeri, hem de 'ben' kavramının oluştuğu yerdir; bu tanım, Freudyen 'ego' kavramının oluşumunun başlangıcıdır. Açıklıklarıyla yara, deri-ben kavramının işlevlerini engelleyerek, 'ben' kavramını zedeler veya ortadan kaldırır. İç ve dış arasındaki sınırın da kalmasıyla, birey bastırılmış olanı geri dönüştürür ve yaranın temsil ettiği dişilik organın da etkisiyle beden alışılmadık bir dönüşüm içine girer. This research sets out to study the connotative meaning of the corporal wound in the context of psychoanalytic theory through the Christian iconography and the representation of the wound on Christ's chest at the scene of Crucifixion. This study analyzes the transformation of the wounded body into an uncanny entity by virtue of the connotation of the visual representation of the wound as a vulva. The wound as an corporal opening, threatening the integrity of the skin that covers the body, excoriates and flays the skin and so redefines the conventional definition of the body as an unknown and unfamiliar entity. The concept of `uncanny` that theorized by Sigmund Freud, highly corresponds to the redefined interpretation of the wounded body. As a result of tearing the skin and violating the main function of the psychic envelope, now the body with its openings literally is an 'uncanny body'. The French psychoanalyst Didier Anzieu declares that skin is not only tangible, but also a representation that surrounds and covers the psyche, through his innovative concept 'Skin-Ego'. The skin is where the disturbances are kept as a memory on in the form of skin disorders and/or bruises and wounds, and also is where the perception of the body appears for the first time; this is also where the Ego arises, through Freudian discourse. The wound, by blocking the function of the Skin-Ego, undermines and/or eliminates the familiar perception of the body. Through removing the boundary between inside and outside, and through the visibility of the representation of the open wound as female genitalia, body transforms itself into a unusual, unfamiliar and unknown form. On dokuzuncu yüzyıl, İngiltere Hükümeti'nin hem politik hem de ekonomik yönde sınırlarını genişleterek, emperyalist politikalarını sağlamlaştırdığı önemli bir dönemdir. İngiliz sömürgeciliğin diğer bir besin kaynağı olan kültürel daha da önemlisi 'bilimsel' penetrasyon, sömürgeci gücün meşru zemine oturmasına yardımcı olmuştur. Bu penetrasyonun sonucunda ortaya çıkan antropoloji disiplini, sömürgeciliği hem 'bilimsel' düzeye taşımış aynı zamanda da sömürgecilikten faydalanarak kendi metot ve pratiklerini devam ettirmiştir. Bunun karşılığında ise, antropoloji, emperyalist güçlere 'bilimsel' kaynak sağlamıştır. Bu ikili ilişki arasında kalan etnografik sergiler, özellikle Afrika'dan getirilen kadın, erkek ve çocukları sergileyerek, sömürgeci gücü halka hatırlatmayı amaç edinmişlerdir. Bu tez, sömürgeci söylemin üretim aşamasında İngiliz devletinin hizmetinde siyasi bir araç olarak kullanılan antropolojinin ve bu kullanım sırasında ortaya çıkan etnografik sergilerin tarihini, içeriğini ve halka sunuş şeklini ele almaktadır. Sömürgeci söylem ile antropolojinin iç içe geçmiş ilişkisini temel alan bu tez, on dokuzuncu yüzyılın ilk yarısındaki etnografik sergilerde kurgulanmış olan bu hikayenin nedenleri ve sonuçları üzerinde durmaktadır. Birinci bölüm, sömürgeci antropolog ve 'yerlinin' eşitsizlik üzerine kurulu karşılaşması ve yakınlaşması sonucunda yerlinin geçirmiş olduğu değişimi inceler. İkinci bölüm, bu değişimden sonra ortaya çıkan etnografik bedenin yani Afrikalı siyahi bedenin artık bir 'vahşi' olarak görülme aşamasını ve bu değişimin sergi sahnesinde nasıl görünür ve aynı zamanda meşru kılındığını analiz eder. Üçüncü ve son bölümde ise özellikle 1850'lerle birlikte performatif bir alana evrilen sergilerin 'vahşiyi' sahnelerken kullanılan poster, resim ve gazete kaynaklarına dayanarak 'ucube şovlardan' yani 'ucube' bedenin sergilenmesinden pek de ayrılmadığı incelenmektedir. The nineteenth century was an important period when the British Empire pursued a strong imperial policy by expanding its boundaries both in political and economic ways. A significant source of the British colonialism was the cultural and more importantly 'scientific' penetration in the colonized lands, which helped Britain to carry its colonial power onto a more legitimate ground. One of the most important results of this penetration was the development of the anthropology a discipline that carried the colonialism to a 'scientific' level and it also continued to practice its methods and approaches by using the advantages provided by colonialism. In return, anthropology legitimized imperial power through scientific methods. The human ethnographic exhibitions and shows that are at the center of this thesis are located in between this mutual interaction, as they were aimed to remind the imperial and colonial power to the European public by displaying African men, women and children. This thesis aims to survey the use of anthropology as a political tool by the British Empire during the production of colonial discourse as well as the history, content and public presentation of ethnographic exhibits. The main focus of this thesis is on the causes and effects of the constructed narratives within these displays, which were based upon the intertwined relationship between anthropology and the colonial discourse during the first half of the nineteenth century. The first chapter conducts an analysis of the transformation of the native as a result of the unequal encounters between the anthropologist and the native encounter. Since the ethnographic body or the body of the African black native, was viewed as 'savage', the second chapter aims to problematize how this transformation was being legitimized and how it became visible on the display stage. In the third chapter, the close relationship between the ethnographic body and the 'freak body' or between the ethnographic exhibitions and the 'freak shows' during the mid nineteenth century is surveyed based on historical materials such as posters, pictures and newspapers. 226

Bu tezde 2013 sonrasında, İstanbul Beyoğlu ilçesinde evsizleşenlerle gerçekleştirdiğim alan araştırmasının sonuçları evsizleşme sürecine ve `düşme anına` odaklanılarak anlatılmaktadır.Yeni yüzyılda yoksul bedenler, kentsel dönüşüm ve kamu politikaları sonucunda evsiz bedenlerine dönüşmekte ve kentin alt basamak tipolojilerine yeni bir yoksulluk tipi eklenmektedir. Yoksul bedenler uzun soluklu bir statü kaybı, sosyal dışlanma ve korunmasızlık süreci sonucunda hukuki, ekonomik, kurumsal güç ilişkilerinin kesişiminde evsizleşmektedir. Evsizlik eşiğine gelen bedenler tarihselliği olan tabularla işaretlenmekte, bedenleri damgalanmakta ve metropol içerisinde görünmeyen sınırlara hapsedilmektedir. Evsizleşenlerin devletle ve toplumla karşılaşmalarında yeni toplumsal kurallar oluşmaktadır. Hapsedilen bu bedenler sokakta kaldıkça temel vatandaşlık haklarına erişememekte ve `kimsesizler mezarlığına` doğru düşmektedir.Evsizin `hücre` dediği evindeki yaşantısı olağanüstü hal koşullarında sürmektedir. This thesis presents the results of field research conducted in the Beyoğlu district of İstanbul on homelessness, focusing on the process of becoming homeless and `falling through the cracks.`In this day and age poor `bodies` are transformed into homeless`bodies` as a consequence of urban transformation and public policy. As a result of this transformation a new type of poverty is added to the low order typology of the urban. Poor bodies, an end-product of a long term process of status deprivation, social exclusion, and loss of protection become homeless at the crossroads of legal, economic and institutional power relations. Bodies which cross the threshold of homelessness are marked by taboos, stigmatized and imprisoned in the metropolis within invisible borders. When homeless people encounter the state and society new social rules emerge. These`imprisoned` bodies cannot avail themselves of their civil rights while living in the street, and in the very end they wind up in the`cemetery of the nameless.` Homeless lives are lived under very severe conditions in a home which the homeless choose to call a `cell.` 120

Bu çalışmada, Bediüzzaman Said Nursi'nin 'Müspet Hareket' metodu bir sivil itaatsizlik örneği olarak sunuluyor. Said Nursi'nin Risale-i Nur adlı eserlerinde sözünü ettiği metodun ilkeleri aynı zamanda Nurculuk hareketinin faaliyetlerini belirleyen bir hizmet metodudur. Müspet Hareket temel hak ve hürriyetlerin geri kazanılması yolunda her durumda ve her koşulda şiddeti reddeden alternatif bir direnme hakkı olarak karşımıza çıkar. Müspet Hareket metodu bir sivil itaatsizlik örneği olarak incelenirken Said Nursi'nin Yeni Said dönemi olarak adlandırdığı süreçteki olaylar ele alınmaktadır. Burada, Said Nursi'nin özellikle 1923-1950 yılları arasındaki siyasal iktidara karşı sergilediği şiddeti dışlayan, siyaset-dışı mücadelesinin dönüştürücü etkileri incelenmektedir. Müspet Hareketin daha iyi anlaşılabilmesi adına sivil itaatsizliğin temel unsurları ile birlikte direnme hakkı tarihsel planda incelenmiş, çeşitli düşünürlerin kavrama kazandırdığı anlamlara yer verilmiştir. Ayrıca, sivil itaatsizlik kavramını pratik alanda Satyagraha (şiddet dışı direniş) felsefesi ile hayata taşıyan Gandhi'nin mücadelesine yer verilmektedir. Gandhi'nin felsefesinde kendini gösteren yapıcı ve evrensel dilin dönüştürücü etkisinin müspet hareket metodu aracılığıyla da sağlanabileceği düşünülmektedir. In this study, Bediüzzaman Said Nursi's concept of 'positive action' method is presented as an example of civil disobedience. The principles of the `positive action` method that Said Nursi outlines in his works called Risale-i Nur are also a service method which determines the activities of the `Nurculuk` movement. Positive action is seen as an alternative right of resistance which rejects violence in every circumstance and condition in the way to re-gaining fundamental rights and freedoms. The events in the period that Said Nursi calls the `New Said` term are evaluated in the process of examining the `Positive Action` method as an example of civil disobedience. Here, the transforming effects of Said Nursi's non-violent and non-political struggle, which he made against political power especially between the years of 1923-1950, are examined. In order to make `positive action` better understood, the basic elements of civil disobedience together with the right of resistance are examined against their historical background, and the meanings which are given to the concept by various thinkers are discussed. Within this context, the struggle of Gandhi which puts the concept of civil disobedience into practice with the philosophy of Satyagraha (non-violence resistance) is taken into consideration. Finally, it is argued that the transforming effect of the constructive and universal discourse, which is manifested in the philosophy of Gandhi, can be obtained also through the `positive action` method. 157

Bu tez Türkiye Yahudileri tarafından konuşulan ve yok olmakta olan Ladino (Yahudi İspanyolcası) dilinin günlük bir iletişim aracından daha sembolik bir zemine doğru değişimini etnografik bir açıdan inceliyor. Çalışmamda İstanbul Sefarad Yahudileri'nin Ladino'dan Türkçe ve Fransızca'ya geçişi (language shift) ile beraber bu değişimde etkili olmuş/olmakta olan kültürel, sosyal ve politik deneyimleri araştırıken, Ladino'nun yok olma sürecinin duygulanımsal (affect) yönüne ve bu süreçte etki eden dil ideolojilerine özellikle dikkat çekiyorum. Dilbilimsel bir perspektifle odağına dillerin yok oluşuna pratik önlemler alan `tehlike altındaki diller` literatürüne eleştirel bir yaklaşımla, dillerin tehlike altına girmesinde etkili olmuş olan sosyal, tarihi ve politik koşulları anlamanın önemini savunuyorum. Sefarad cemaatinin Ladino'nun yitimine karşı duygusal tepkilerini incelerken Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin ulusalcı-asimilasyoncu dil politikaları gibi yapısal faktörlerin öznellikler üzerindeki etkilerini inceliyorum. Temel olarak dil yitimine karşı duygulanımsal tepkilerin daha geniş politik konfigürasyon ve ideolojilere işaret ettiğini savunuyorum. Analizimde dil yitimine tepkiler üzerinden gelişen 1) ortak bir geçmiş ve kültür olarak Sefaradların İspanya'daki tarihine ve dolayısıyla Ladino'ya karşı güçlü bir bağlılık; ve 2) Daha global dini bir kimliğin ve İbranice'nin öneminin altını çizenler arasında temel bir ayrıma işaret ediyorum. Bu ayrım bağlamında Ladino, Fransızca, Türkçe ve İbranice dillerinin İstanbul Yahudileri tarafından nasıl zamansallıklar (temporality) içinde tahayyül edildiğine dair bir inceleme sunuyorum. Ladino'nun ya da İbranice'nin yerinin Yahudi kimliği ve tarihindeki önemini savunan bu iki görüşün daha geniş bir çerçevede zamansallık politikalarına olduğu kadar farklı zaman ve tarih anlayışlarına işaret ettiğini öne sürüyorum. Son olarak, dil, toplumsal sınıf ve kimlik arasındaki indeksikal bağıntıları inceliyorum. Dil yitiminde dil hiyerarşilerinin etkisine bakarken, dilsel yeteneklerin ve dil kullanımının sosyo-ekonomik ve sınıfsal referans noktaları olarak işleyişlerine odaklanıyorum.ANAHTAR KELİMELER: tehlike altındaki diller, dil ölümü, dil ideolojileri, kimlik,Sefarad Yahudileri, duygulanım (affect), zamasallık, kronopolitika (chronopolitics) This thesis explores the decline of Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) spoken by the Turkish Jewry and its transformation from a daily communication device to a more symbolic asset through an ethnographic study. Examining the shift of language use among the Istanbulite Sephardic Jewry from Ladino to Turkish and French along with the accompanying cultural, social and political experiences, my thesis pays particular attention to Ladino's current uses, the affective dimensions of its decline and the language ideologies that enact in its decline. Providing a critical perspective to the literature of endangered languages from a linguistic perspective which focuses on practical measures to prevent the extinction of languages, I argue that it is imperative to understand the social, historical and political conditions that operate in the endangerment of languages. Investigating the Sephardic community's emotive responses to the loss of Ladino, I focus on the impact of structural factors such as nationalist assimilationist language policies of the Turkish Republic. I basically argue that these affective responses to language loss have certain patterns that reference wider political configurations and ideologies. In such framework, my analysis suggests that there is a fundamental divide within the Sephardic community of Istanbul, between 1) those who feel a strong attachment to Iberian history along with Ladino, as a shared past and culture; and 2) those who emphasize the importance of Hebrew and a more global religious identity. In such divide, I provide an inquiry into the temporalities within which languages of Ladino, French, Turkish and Hebrew, are imagined by Istanbulite Jews. I propose that the divide between those who favor Ladino and those who emphasize the importance of Hebrew speak to a wider framework of temporal politics that define Jewish history and identity, as well as distinct understandings of time and history. Finally, I study the indexical links between language, class and identity. Bu tez Türkiye'deki Yahudilerin aidiyet hissiyatlarını, gündelik hayattaki duygulanımları ve karşılaşmaları bağlamında analiz etmeyi amaçlıyor. Yaptığım derinlemesine mülakatlar sonucunda, kendilerini hem Türk hem de Yahudi olarak tanımlayan görüşmecilerin kafalarındaki bu tahayyülün, gerek devletle gerekse insanlarla olan günlük karşılaşmalar bağlamında nasıl sınandığından ve onlara azınlık olduklarının, tam olarak Türk veya vatandaş olmadıklarının nasıl hatırlatıldığından bahsedeceğim. Bu bağlamda hukuki ve siyasi azınlık tanımlarından ziyade bir hissiyat olarak `azınlık olma`yı hem karşılaşmalar hem de duygulanımlar üzerinden analiz edeceğim. Azınlık hissiyatının insanları nasıl bir hayalet gibi takip ettiğini ve onların üzerinde bıraktığı tesirleri inceleyeceğim. Within the light of the in-depth interviews I conducted, my respondents prefer to define themselves as both Turkish and Jewish. I will try to explain how this image of being both Turkish and Jewish is frequently challenged within the context of daily encounters with both state and general public and how they're being constantly reminded of being a minority and how they're not `really` Turkish or a `full` citizen. Within this context, I will focus emotional descriptions of being a minority rather than legal or political descriptions of it through an affective understanding. I will investigate how feeling minority haunts people as a ghost and how it impacts them. Although feeling of minority could emerge as a consequence of encounters of different nature, it is possible to observe similar consequential affects such as insecurity, alertness, discomfort, uneasiness and being uncomfortable. Thus, the question `Against all negative feelings, what still keeps them here?` becomes imminent to search answers for. Yaşamı öldürerek kontrol eden egemen iktidar 18. Yüzyılın başlarında yerini, onu yavaş yavaş kuşatan, titizlikle bedenleri yönetmeye çalışan ve yaşamın hesapçı bir biçimde işletilmesini sağlayan bir iktidara bırakır. Bu tez insanın biyolojik hayatının siyasallaştırılmasını, çağdaş bilim kurgu sineması içerisinde analiz etmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bireyi biyolojik varlık olarak ele alan ve bu tezin teorik altyapısını oluşturan `biyopolitika` kavramı, bir iktidar stratejisi olarak nüfusu, regüle ederek, kontrol ederek ve yöneterek kendi sınırları içinde tutmaya çalışır. Bu modern iktidar stratejisi; güvenlikten biyomedikal sektöre, yasalardan üretim ilişkilerine kadar modern birçok alanın ve ilişkinin şekillenmesine neden olmaktadır. Tezimin temel argümanı Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, Antonio Negri ve Micheal Hardt'ın aynı başlık altında ancak farklı perspektiflerden değerlendirdiği, toplumu gittikçe kuşatan biyopolitikanın çevresinde şekillenmektedir. Bu kavramı kullanırken, edebi eserler yerine bilim kurgu sinemasını seçmemin nedeni, bilim kurgunun romandan sinemaya olan geçiş sürecinde özellikle günümüz açısından daha aktif bir durumda olmasıdır. After the 18th century, sovereign power which was controlling life with killing, gave it's place to a new power which is encompassing life slowly, meticulously working to managing bodies and enabling to operation of life in a planned way. The aim of this study is to analyze the politicize of the biological life of the human in contemporary science fiction cinema. The notion of biopolitic addresses the issue of individual as a biological entity and it constitutes the theoretical background of this thesis. As a strategy of power, it tries to keep population within its borders with managing, regulating and controlling. This modern strategy of power; leads to the formation of many modern areas and relations that are security, biomedical sector, laws and relations of production. Main argument of my thesis is shaped in the framework of biopolitics by Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, Antonio Negri and Micheal Hardt whose worked this notion and evaluated from different perspectives. The reason why I choose the science fiction cinema instead of literature when I'm using this notion because of the science fiction cinema acts more active role than literature in nowadays. The subject of the study is discussed through four films: The Island (Michael Bay, 2005), Minority Report (Steven Spielberg, 2002), Children of Men (Alfonso Cuarón, 2006) and Elysium (Neill Blomkamp, 2013). And in this thesis, each of these films offers an opportunity to discuss the different and specific areas of biopolitics. 111

Bu çalışma, çeşitli sayıda görsel ve yazılı kaynağa başvurarak son on beş sene içerisinde şık bir biçimde örtünmüş Müslüman kadın görünümünün ne manaya tekabül ettiğini analiz etme girişimidir. Kamusal alanda şık veya zarif Müslüman kadın portresini sergilemeye atfedilen kişisel, sosyal ve dini önem, öncelikle İnstagram hesaplarındaki ve popular semtlerdeki (Erenköy ve Bağdat Caddesi) Müslüman kadınların aşırı görünürlüğü ve daha sonra üç farklı İslami moda dergisi üzerine odaklanılarak anlatılmaktadır. Bu çalışmadaki ana amaç, Müslüman kadınların yeniden şekillendirilmiş kimliklerine bağlı olarak bu süreçte yeni oluşturulmuş maddi ve görsel kültürün inşasına işaret etmektir.Tezde vurgulanan bir diğer önemli nokta ise İslami elbise uygulamalarının sürmekte olan dönüşümlerinden dolayı üst kesimle Müslüman entelektüeller arasında oluşan gerilimdir. Alternatif görselliğin oluşumunu, İslami yaşam tarzının yepyeni yorumunu ve bunla ilişkili olarak yeni Müslüman öznelliklerini araştıran tez Müslüman kadınların tesettür performansları ile dindarlık arasındaki bağlantıyı analiz etmektedir. Çalışma, Müslüman kadınların medya kaynaklarındaki mevcut temsilleri ile tesettürün kabul edilmiş ana akım yorumu arasındaki farklılıkları sunmaktadır. Bu farklılık, kadın bedenselliğini örtmenin mevcut temsili fonksiyonu sebebiyle çağdaş Müslüman kadınların bir profanlaşma* süreci yaşayıp yaşamadığı sorusuna Müslümanlar için referans kaynağı olan Kuran ve hadisler göz önüne alınılarak dikkat çekmektedir.* Profanlaşma kutsal şeye saygısızlık, kutsal olanın içeriğinin boşaltılması veya değerli olanla bağların koparılması manalarına tekabül etmektedir. Drawing upon a wide range of visual and written sources, the study is an attempt to analyze what it corresponds to look a fashionably covered Muslim female in about last fifteen years. Personal, social and religious significance attached to display an elegant Muslim female portrait in public is elucidated by focusing on three different Islamic fashion magazines and the exorbitant visibility of Muslim females on Instagram accounts and in the popular districts such as Erenköy and Bagdat Street. The main objective in this study is to point out the construction of the newly-formed material and visual culture through the current refashioned identity of Muslim females in this process.Other important point that is highlighted in thesis is the tension between Islamic intellectuals and the upper class due to the ongoing transformations of Islamic dress practices. While exploring the formation of the alternative visuality, new interpretation of Islamic lifestyle and accordingly new Muslim subjectivities, the thesis analyzes the connection between the religiosity and tesettür* performance of Muslim females. The study presents the difference between the current media representations of Muslim females and the acknowledged mainstream interpretation of tesettür, which raises the question of whether contemporary Muslim females experience a process of profanation due to the current representational function of covering female corporality by taking the hadiths and the Quran into consideration as the source of reference for Muslims.* The word `tesettür` stands for something more than just covering the hair with a headscarf or a shawl but it denotes not only the expected outer look but also morality defined for Muslim females in the Islamic law. 209

Bu çalışmanın amacı gündelik hayatta kamusal alanda bakış, görünürlük ve kendini denetleme arasındaki ilişkinin araştırılmasıdır. Bireylerin hem maruz kaldığı hem de kullandığı bakışın, kendini denetleme mekanizmalarına etkisi eleştirel söylem analizi kullanılarak incelenmiştir. Saha olarak İstanbul- Bağdat Caddesi seçilmiştir. Burada zaman geçiren 7 katılımcı ile derinlemesine röportajlar gerçekleştirilmiştir. Konuşmalar ses kayıt cihazıyla kaydedilmiş ve yazı dökümleri yapılmıştır. Özne pozisyonları, ana akım söylemler açısından bu röportajlar incelenmiştir. Analizler kendini denetleme, idealize edilen kimlikler, rasyonalite, tutarlı olma baskısı, görünürlük, görünürlüğün sosyo ekonomik boyutları, toplumsal cinsiyet, bakışa dair özne pozisyonları açısından değerlendirilmiştir. The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between the gaze, the visibility and the process of self-regulation in the public space that everyday social interactions are embedded within. The effect of the gaze that is both exposed and used by social actors on the mechanisms of self-regulation was investigated using critical discourse analysis method. Bagdat Avenue in Istanbul was selected as the research field. Within the scope of the research methodology, the in-depth interviews were conducted with 7 respondents. The interviews were recorded with digital voice recorder and their transcriptions were made. They have been analysed in terms of how different subject positions might be opened up or closed down by dominant or hegemonic discourses. Finally, the analyses have been evaluated with regards to self- regulation, idealized identities, rationality, the pressure of being consistent, visibility, socio-economic dimensions of the visibility, gender and emerging subject positions. 143

Modern bireyciliğin gelişmesinde Batı'nın düşünce geleneği önemli bir rol oynamıştır. Bu geleneğin Rönesans, sanayileşme, on dokuzuncu yüzyılda gelişen kentleşme ve mimari hareket, Protestanlık gibi birçok seküler ve dini kaynakları olmuştur. Tüketim kültürü, hız, şiddet ve medya da günümüz bireyci değerlerinin dünya çapında ve Türkiye'de etkili olmasında önemli unsurlar olmuştur. Güvensizlik ve can sıkıntısı hastalığına yakalanmış bir toplumda insanlar özel alana daha çok önem vererek, kendi kendilerine yeten bireyler olmayı hedeflemişlerdir. Giderek yalnızlaşan ve duyarlılık düzeyi azalan insanlar diğer insanlarla ilişkilerinde ihtiyatla yaklaşmaya başlamışlardır. Bu durum da sahici ilişkilerin oluşmasını engellemiş ve insanları mutsuzlaştırmıştır. Bu çalışmada Avusturya'lı yönetmen Michael Haneke'nin `kent veya buzlaşma` üçlemesi filmleri Tesadüfi Bir Kronolojinin 71 Parçası, Yedinci Kıta ve Benny'nin Videosu bireyciliğin, aile, mahremiyet, din, medya, kent, şiddet ve tüketim ile ilişkisi bağlamında tartışılmıştır. Haneke bu filmlerde Batı'nın refah içerisinde yaşayan toplumlarının mutsuz hayatlarından esinlenmiştir. Bu filmlerden bireyciliğin insanları yalnızlaştırdığı ve duyarlılık düzeylerini azalttığı sonucu çıkarılmıştır. Bu tezin amacı, Türkiye toplumunda bireyciliğin sıkıntılarını anlayabilmek için bireyleşme hareketinin doğduğu ve en güçlü olduğu Batı'yı kendi metinleri aracılığıyla anlamaya çalışmaktır. Western tradition has played an important role in the development of modern individualism. This custom had several secular and religious sources as the Renaissance, industrilization, Protestantism and the movement of architecture and the urbanisation that developed in the nineteenth century. The culture of consumption, velocity, violence and media have been important elements to have an important effect on the values of individualist in Turkey and the world wide. In the society that got the sickness of feelings insecurity and boredom people have aimed to be self sufficient individuals by giving more importance to private sphere. The people who are getting lonelier and less sensitive have started to approach with caution to their relations with the other people. This situation has hindered development of real relations and has made people unhappy, too. In this study, `trilogy films of urban`, 71 Fragments Of A Chronology Of Chance, The Seventh Continent and Benny's Video by Austrian director Michael Haneke are discussed in the context of family, privacy, religion, media, urban, consumption in relation to individualism. In these films, Haneke was inspired by the unhappy lives at the western societies that live in prosperity. It was found out that individualism made people isolated and decreased their sensitiveness from these films. The purpose of this study is try to find out the challenges of individualism in Turkish society with the own texts of West where the movement of individualism was arosen and still the most intense. 105

Bu tez çalışması için bu mekânın seçilmiş olmasının sebebi, devlet güdümlü şiddet ve hareketlerin ortaya çıkardığı mağduriyetlerin görüldüğü ikonik yerlerden biri olmasıdır. Bu travmatik hafıza mekânının oluşturulması, sunulması ve tüketilmesini müzenin semiyolojik okuması ve etnografik araştırma ile inceleyip, şiddet, adaletsizlik ve politik ayrımcılığın günümüz Türkiyesinin politik bağlamındaki tartışmaya açık anlamlarını, böylesi bir mekânın müzeye dönüştürülmesinin önemini de göz önünde bulundurarak, ortaya çıkaracağım. Ulucanlar Hapishanesi Müzesi'nin oluşturulma süreci ve sonrasındaki duygulanımsal, politik ve sembolik mücadelelere bakarak, böylesi bir mekânı müzeleştirme talebinin ortaya çıkışı ve gerçekleştirilmesi arasındaki ilişkiyi inceleyeceğim. This thesis explores the restoration of Ulucanlar Prison as a museum and memory politics around it. This particular site has been chosen for this research because it has been (and continue to be) one of the most iconic marks of the violent victimization through state-led actions and violence. Combining a semiological reading and ethnographic examination of the construction, presentation and consumption of this traumatic memory location, I will trace the multiple and often contradictory ways in which violence, injustice and political discrimination find their contested meanings in today's political context of Turkey, considering the signification and meaning of turning a place into a museum. Studying the affective, political, and symbolic struggles and claims around the formation of Ulucanlar prison-museum, I will illustrate the relationship between the emergence and actualization of the demand for institutionalizing a place as a museum, and the event's place in collective memory that the place is marked by. 228

1980'lerden itibaren İstanbul, dünyada birçok metropolde olduğu gibi, neoliberal politikalarla dönüştürülmeye başlanmıştır. 2002 yılında AKP'nin hem yerel yönetimlerde, hem de merkezi yönetimde iktidar olmasıyla birlikte bu süreç hız kazanmıştır. Neoliberal küreselleşmeci politikaların merkeze alındığı kentsel dönüşüm projelerinde kamu yararları gözetilmemekte ve sadece belirli grupların çıkarlarına hizmet edilmektedir. Bu durumun en önemli sonuçlarından biri modern kent planlamacılığının bir parçası olan kamusal alanların yok olması ve bunun sonucunda da toplumsal gerilimlerin artmasıdır. Kamusal alanın zayıflamasına ek olarak mülksüzleştirme ve yerinden etme, İstanbul'daki kentsel dönüşüm projelerinin sonuçlarındandır. Kentsel dönüşüm projeleri AKP'nin üçüncü döneminde farklı boyutlar kazanmıştır. Bu dönemde kentsel mekânlar önceki dönemlerin aksine sembolik olarak da dönüştürülmek istenmiştir. Birçok restorasyon ve yeniden canlandırma projesi iktidarın söylemiyle çelişen bir şekilde yıkım ve tahrip ile sonuçlanmıştır. Like in many lands, urban transformations in Istanbul has been led by neoliberal policies since 1980s. Neoliberal urban transformations accelerated with the AK Party having control over both in local and national administrators, increasing the speed of the neoliberal urban transformations. The primary focus of such urbanization policies has never been the public interest but it rather serves some particular social groups. One of the most important consequences of this type of urbanization is that it attacks modern city's public space. The shrinking public space increases conflicts and tension in society. Additionally, dispossession and forced migration appear as other results of urban transformations in Istanbul. Transformation projects have had a new dimension since the beginning of the third period of the AKP government. During this period, AKP additionally tried to symbolically transform the city. As a part of this symbolical transformation, many historical monuments were destroyed or harmed despite the discourse created by the AKP. 91

Kürtlerin yaşadığı dilsel travma son on yıl içerisinde sosyo-linguistik, pedagojik ve sosyolojik çalışmaların konusu olmuştur. Bu tez çalışması ise, konuya farklı bir disiplin perspektifinden bakarak, dilsel travmayı Kürt olup ama edebi çalışmalarını Türkçe kaleme alan yazar Suzan Samancı'nın eserleri üzerinden giderek incelemektedir. Deleuze ve Guattari tarafından geliştirilen Minör Edebiyat kavramı, Samancı'nın ürettiğine benzer edebiyatları bir minör grubun edebiyatı olarak değil de, daha ziyade majör bir dil içerisinde minör bir grubun yaptığı edebiyat olarak tartışır. Bu her iki düşünür, standartlaşmış dilin kurallarını bozan bu edebiyatın devrimci yanı üzerinde dururlar. Suzan Samancı'nın eserlerine yönelik benim geliştirdiğim yaklaşım ise onların devrimci konseptinden çok daha öte bir noktada yer almaktadır. Bu noktada, ben minör edebiyat yazarının ve karakterlerinin, sessizlikle beraber gelişen dil kaybından dolayı, acı çektikleri Araf'ın izini sürerek travma anlatısı üzerinde durmaktayım. Samancı'nın eserlerinde dilsel travma, art arda iki aşama şeklinde kendini gösteren `sessizlik` ile resmedilir. İlk aşama fısıltılar, kekeleme ve ikinci dil (Türkçe) içerisinde yaşanan huzursuzluğun eşlik ettiği birinci dilin (Kürtçe) yitirilmesiyle ortaya çıkarken, ikincisi ise 1990'lı yıllarda, Kürtlerin çoğunlukta yaşadığı bölgelerde on beş yıl süren OHAL döneminde gerçekleşen sosyo-politik baskıların egemenliğinde yaşanır. The linguistic trauma experienced by Kurdish people has been the subject of several socio-linguistic, pedagogical and sociological studies in the last ten years. In order to look at this issue from the perspective of another field of study, my thesis examines linguistic trauma through the lens of fiction written by Suzan Samancı, a Kurdish author who produces her literary works in Turkish. The notion of Minor Literature developed by Deleuze and Guattari argues that fiction like hers is not the literature of just any minority group, but instead literature of a minor group within a major language. These thinkers focus on the revolutionary side of this literature, which breaks the rules of the standardized language. My approach to reading Samancı goes beyond their revolutionary concept. I focus on the narration of trauma, exploring the limbo in which a minor literature writer and his/her characters suffer the loss of language along with silence. In Samancı's works, linguistic trauma can be plotted by the occurrence of `silence` in two sequential phases. The first phase happens after attrition of the first language (Kurdish), accompanied by whispers, stuttering and uneasiness in the second language (Turkish). The second appears under the socio-political pressures in the 1990s, when for fifteen years a state of emergency was declared in regions mostly populated by Kurds. Although they speak the language they have learned by force, hoping to finally be heard by the social and political hegemony, they still are forced to remain silent and mute. As theorized by Spivak, the characters experience their own subalternity since they are unable to speak, or in other words, to be heard. After scrutinizing the short stories and novels of Suzan Samancı by the close-reading method, I have determined that these two seemingly different silences are in fact the same. When we interpret the obsessive use of the word `shadow` and its image lingering throughout all her work as a Jungian archetypal concept, it becomes quite evident that this emphasis on shadow is a means to trigger the forgotten silence due to the loss of language. Shadow makes the language deprivation come to the surface, reminding us that the essence of silence in her works is the first silence – the erasure of the Kurdish language– which has been suppressed for many years. 109

Antik Yunan'a ait tarihi ve edebi belgeler incelendiğinde, toplumda kadınlığın ikincil cinsiyet olarak kabul edildiği görülür. Bir Yunan kadınının tüm hayatı, içinde yaşadığı toplumun kuralları ile sınırlandırılıp şekillendirilmiştir. Antik çağdan itibaren kadına atfedilen ve bugün dahi geçerliliğini koruyan `sessizlik`, `edilgenlik`, `duygusallık`, `evcimenlik` gibi kadınlık özelliklerinin kadını maruz bıraktığı, bilindik toplumsal durum(lar)a ek olarak; Antik Yunan'da –belki de günümüzün `modern` toplumlarında dahi- kadının sürekli maruz kalmasına rağmen, üzerine henüz konuşulmamış bir toplumsal durumu daha vardı: `parçalanmış sahiplik`. Bu tezde dinini, evliliğini, ailesini, mülkünü, mirasını, hukuk tarafından korunma hakkını ve kimliğini sürekli olarak terketmeye zorlanmış Antik Yunan kadınının (üzerine konuşulmamış toplumsal durumu olarak) `terketme hali` ve `parçalanmış sahipliği` incelenmiştir. Under the light of historical and literary documents of Ancient Greece, it can be observed that the Greek woman was secondary to man in Ancient Greek society. The entire life of an Ancient Greek woman was limited to and shaped by societal restrictions. In addition to the characteristics of femininity that have been attributed to women since the ancient times and are still valid even today, such as `silence`, `passivity`, `sensitivity`, `domesticity`, etc.; there was another social state in Ancient Greece –that can even be encountered in today's `modern` societies– that has not been spoken about, although Greek women were continuously subjected to it: `fragmented possession`. This study intends to examine the `abandoning status` and `fragmented possession` –as the unspoken state of Greek femininity– of the Ancient Greek woman who was continuously forced to abandon her religion, marriage, family, property, inheritance, legal protection and identity. 86

Büyük Selçuklu Devleti zamanından Cumhuriyet'in kuruluşuna dek Ortadoğu coğrafyasının temel eğitim kurumu özelliğini taşıyan medreseler, Cumhuriyet'in kuruluş yıllarında çıkarılan Tevhid-i Tedrisat Kanunu'nun yürürlüğe girmesiyle yasal olarak kapatılmışlardır. Ancak toplumun devam eden dinî eğitim ihtiyacı, özellikle merkezî devletin ulaşamadığı kırsal bölgelerde yine medreselerce karşılanmaya devam etmiştir. Kürdistan bölgesinde bu medrese hocalarına 'mele' (molla) adı verilmektedir. Medreselere ilişkin mimarî, eğitim ve din alanlarında çeşitli akademik çalışmalar yapılmıştır ancak laik Türk ulus devletinin sınırları içerisinde, Cumhuriyet yeniliklerinin uygulamaya koyulması sürecinden Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi dönemine kadar maruz kaldıkları tüm yasak ve baskılara rağmen medrese geleneğini sürdürmek için çabalayan bu din adamlarının yaşantılarına ilişkin herhangi bir akademik çalışma bulunmamaktadır. Buradan hareketle ortaya çıkan bu çalışmanın temel amacı, melelerin medrese geleneğini sürdürmeye gayret ederken yaşadıkları dönüşümü, Kürt ve Müslüman kimlikleriyle Cumhuriyet tarihi boyunca yaşadıkları zorlukları onların tanıklıkları eşliğinde gün yüzüne çıkarmaktır. Bunun yanı sıra Kürdistan medreselerinin yapısı, bölgedeki siyasî çatışma ortamının aktörleriyle olan etkileşimleri, Türkiye'deki siyasal ve toplumsal değişimlerin medreseler üzerindeki etkisi de çalışmada yer alan konulardandır. Çalışma kapsamında yapılan birebir görüşmeler Muş ve Diyarbakır illeri ile tarihî Norşin medreselerinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Görüşmeciler, hâlihazırda müderrislik görevini sürdürmekte olan meleler ile geçmişte medrese eğitimi almış kişiler arasından seçilmiştir. Madrasahs, which had had a quality of basic education institution in the Middle East from Great Seljuk Empire to establishment of Turkish Republic, were closed within the law of on Unification of Education. However, ongoing need for religious education has satisfied by madrasahs again, especially in rural area which is aside from central state power. In Kurdistan realm, madrasahs' educators are called as 'mele' (mullah). Although there are some of studies in architectural, educational and religious area, there is no academic study about life style of these clergymen which try to protect and sustain madrasah understanding despite of all pressures and prohibitions in secular Turkish nation-state, from Republican Revolution period to Justice and Development Party era. From this point, main aim of the thesis to bring to light transformation that mullahs have experienced when they take care of maintaining madrasah tradition and challenges which they have faced with their Kurdish and Muslim identity through Republic era, in company with their experiences. Besides, structure of Kurdistan madrasahs and their interactions with actors of political conflict in region, political and social alterations' impacts over madrasahs in Turkey are dealt in study. One on one interviews were carried out both in Muş, Diyarbakır and historical Norşîn madrasahs. Interviewers are mullahs who continue a duty of mudarris and are individuals who receive madrasah education. 153

Çalışma yarı yapılandırılmış, derinlemesine görüşme ve katılımcı gözlemci tekniğine dayanarak, transseksüel kadın ve transseksüel erkeklerin sağlık çalışanları tarafından nasıl kurgulandıklarını incelemektedir. Bu bedenler sağlık sistemindeki ayrımcı politikalara, heteronormatif kurgulara ve modern devlet pratiklerine karşı nasıl bir duruş sergilemektedirler? Transfobik sağlık çalışanlarının davranışlarını nasıl deneyimlemektedirler? Cinsiyet geçiş sürecinde sağlığa erişim hakkını nasıl tahayyül etmektedirler? Bu sorular çerçevesinde bu tez, tıbbi otorite konumunda olan sağlık çalışanlarını, devletin transseksüel bedenlere müdahalesini ve cinsiyet değişim operasyonu sürecindeki deneyimleri iki taraflı analiz eder. Bu etnografik çalışma, sağlık çalışanları ile trans bedenlerin ilişkilerini incelemenin yanı sıra Türkiye'de var olan sağlık sektöründeki transfobiye karşı transseksüellerin sağlığa erişim hakkına katkı sunmayı hedeflemektedir. Bu bağlamda bu tez, temel bir vatandaşlık hakkı olarak görülen sağlık hakkının transseksüellere nasıl ve hangi ölçüde ulaştığını irdeler. This thesis focuses on the health system and the discrimination of transsexual women and men who are `excluded`, `marginalized` by the health workers during the period of sex change operation. Based on semi-structured, in-depth interviews and participant-observation with transsexual women and men, the research both explores the strategies developed by transsexuals in the context of health care system and tries to lay bare the constitution of transsexual bodies. How do these bodies constitute a challenge to the discrimination policies, to the heteronormative system and to modern political practices? How do they experience the attitudes of the health workers and how do they imagine the right of access to health care in the process of reassignment surgery. Asking such questions, this thesis analyzes both the attitudes of the health workers towards transsexuals and the way in which state apparatuses interfere with these bodies in a negative way especially in the process of the sex change operation. This ethnographic study examines the relationship between health care professionals and transsexuals, and it aims to expose the transfobia present in the Turkish health care system. Finally, this research aims to indicate how and at which level transsexuals can have an access to health care in Turkey. 165

Dünya edebiyatı da Nobel Edebiyat Ödülü de temelde bazı seçimlere dayanmaktadır. İlk kez 1827'de Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) tarafından ortaya atılan `dünya edebiyatı` kavramı da büyük ölçüde çeviriye, dolayısıyla, yapılan bazı seçimlere bağlı bir sistemdir. Although Nobel Prize in literature, one of the branches of Nobel Prizes which are given upon the will of Alfred Nobel (1833-1896), is one of the most debated and criticized organizations, it is thought to be among the most prestigious prizes in the world. The difference from other prizes is its being the oldest and prestigious international literature prize and its substantial sum prize.In this study, firstly, structure of the Nobel Prize in Literature and the reasons of criticism about it are examined, then its function in world literature is discussed in view of these reasons. Both world literature and Nobel prizes in literature depend on choices. World literature, which is first coined by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) in 1827, is mostly tied to translation. The choice of works which will be translated is made out of the opinion of their writers and readers. The only difference from Nobel Committee is that we don't know the names of the people who decide.Also, in the process of deciding about Nobel Prize in literature, consideration and evaluation of works also depend on translation. The works which are recognized in their mother tongue by the help of reports are translated after the Prize. And so, this work has a chance to be considered within the world literature. In this way, Nobel Prize in Literature supports the world literature. 69

Philosophy for feminists, regarding its self-definition as a discipline above sciences and beyond history, is a challenging and necessary field of inquiry. Feminist philosophy literature is a collection of studies that consists of reviews, deconstructions and transformations of the canon with feminist critical and reconstructivist approaches. The historical and cultural juxtaposition of second wave feminism and poststructuralism had a significant effect on this literature. Gilles Deleuze is one of the philosophers whose works have been interested and inspired feminist philosophy for the last 30 years. He, contrary to many of his contemporaries, rejects the death of philosophy and gives back its reputation by redefining it perversely. The purpose of this thesis is to focus on the feminist discussions inspired by the concept of ‘becoming-woman’ -the moment of encounter between feminist philosophy and Deleuze’s philosophy- and to search for the possibilities of becoming for feminist philosophy. This thesis presents inferences on the possibilities of a Deleuzian feminism and a feminist Deleuzianness. A hesitation observed in feminists’ relationship with philosophy is similar to that observed in their inclinations towards Deleuze. The moment of hesitation crystallized within the tension between Deleuze’s philosophy of immanence and feminist philosophy, is interpreted as an active thinking with new lines of flow, new potentials of becoming for feminist philosophy and feminist thought, rather than stagnation and passivity. 1960?lı yıllardan günümüze uzanan süreçte Türk Edebiyatı?nın eril damarları şiddetle çatladı. Sevgi Soysal, Latife Tekin ve Şebnem İşigüzel bu çatlakların en önemli faillerinden oldu. Türkiye?nin değişen politik ortamının nabzını yoklayan edebiyatın bu üç önemli yazarının eserlerindeki ?kadın? temsilleri bunun bir göstergesidir. Kadınlık meselelerinde görünmeyeni görünür kılmaya yönelik çabaları kendi zamanlarında devrim yarattı. Üç kadın yazar, kadın cinselliğini, kadına yönelik şiddeti, kadın haklarını ve toplumsal cinsiyet normlarını anlattı. Sevgi Sosyal, Latife Tekin and Şebnem İşigüzel became the prominent actresses of such a break. These three literary agents wrote about ?woman? while prowling around the changing political atmosphere in Turkey. Their efforts to make the invisible visible were revolutionary for their era. These three authors courageously told about sexuality of woman, women?s rights, gender, and violence against woman. The following study tries to develop a new perspective on the readings of philosophical texts that are based on the auto/biographies of the philosophers. In this path this study takes philosophy not an objective representation of truth but a writing as Jacques Derrida does. Bu tez Kadınlar dünyası'nın 1913 yılı içinde yayınlanmış olan ilk yüz sayısını kullanarak geç Osmanlı dönemi bağlamında kadın hareketi ve milliyetçi politikalar arasındaki ilişkileri inceler. Milliyetçiliğin dönemin hakim ideolojisi olarak ortaya çıkışı kadınların içinde kendilerine yeni sosyal konumlar, roller ve görevler atfedebilecekleri yeni bir toplum mevhumu yarattı. Bu bağlamda kadınların talepleri kendilerine atfedilen milli görevlerle içiçe geçmiş bir şekilde ortaya çıktı. Kadınlar ?millet? içindeki statü ve görevlerine dair yeni tahayyüllerden destek alarak yanlızca taleplerini yeniden formüle etmekle kalmadılar, aynı zamanda bu taleplerini daha meşru bir şekilde ifade edebildiler. Ayrıca, kadın aktivizmi kendisine içinde çeşitli şekillerde yeşerebileceği verimli bir alan buldu. This thesis explores the connections between womens movement and nationalist politics within the late Ottoman context, utilizing first 100 issues of Kadınlar dünyası published in 1913.The emergence of nationalism as the dominant ideology of the period provided a new conception of society within which the women could attribute themselves new social positions, roles and duties. Within such a context, womens demands emerged entangled with the national roles attributed them. Depending on new imaginations about their status and roles in ?the nation? women did not only re-formulate their demands, but also articulated them more legitimately. Women?s activism could find a fertile arena, within which it could flourish in various forms. 105

This dissertation study follows a transnational company into its penetration into a market in a new country. The study examines how an existing production and distribution network could be transformed and how an ordinary consumer is convinced to accept a new product. Fats and oils, especially margarine are taken as the sample within the scope of this study. Fats and oils give a fertile topic that allows many different approaches as a subject. Their critical role in human evolution, being a fundamental necessity for the body, yet them being a privilege for the deserving since hunter-gathering communities, their ability to trigger the reward center of the brain and make us perceive food more deliciously, the sacredness it carries in many beliefs -from ancient mythologies to monotheistic religions- and many more meanings attributed to them make it an enjoyable subject to study.The dissertation starts with the deep-rooted history of the production and consumption habits in the hinterland of Turkey and Ottoman Empire. After that, it focuses on the entrance of a food company with one of the world's largest marketing budgets to Turkish market. The story of margarine which was newly heard in 1950's, became a staple from the 1960's and it's eradication from the market since the 1990's will be examined in this study in a historical context by examining the advertisements as well. 179

Yazıdan daha fazla söze başvurmuş olan Kürtlerde sözlü gelenek, kültürel belleğin zinde kalmasında manevi mirasa sahiptir. Kürt toplumunda birikimlerini söz aracılığıyla bellekte taşıyan sözlü edebiyatın aktarıcıları olan Dengbêjler ve çirokbêjler genellikle yazı kültürüne çok sonra sahip olmalarından kaynaklı çok iyi bir bellek ve söyleme yeteneğine sahiptirler. Devraldıkları geleneği sürdürmekle beraber bir toplumun belleğini canlı tutma görevini üstlenmişlerdir. Kültürel belleğe ilişkin pek çok bilgiyi sözlü kültür ürünlerinden öğrenen Kürtler, toplumun hikâyelerine dair gerçeğe en yakın kaynak olarak bir sözlü kültür halk ürünü olan destanlara başvurmaktadırlar. Kürt kültürü ve tarihine dair güncel bilgilere ve kültürel temalara sahip Dewrêş û Edûlê destanı Dengbêjler aracılığı ile günümüze kadar gelmiştir. Destanın kahramanı olan Dewrêş'in trajedisine baktığımızda, o dönemde yaşayan Kürt aşiretlerinin yönetilmeye karşı duydukları tahammülsüzlük ve buna bağlı olarak da farklı inançlara rağmen var olma savaşının bedelleri ve bir aşkın trajedisi vardır. İşte Dengbêj bu savaşlarda kaybeden, sürgün edilen, direnen kahramanların yarattığı değerleri anlatılarıyla görünür kılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada anonim ve epik türe dahil edilen Dewrêş û Edûlê destanına, belirli temalar üzerinden yaklaşarak sosyal yaşamı, kadın imajlarını ve inanç temsillerini çözümlemek amaçlanmıştır. Kürtlerin ortak hafızasında yer alan Dewrêş û Edûlê destanını kültürel bellek çerçevesinde değerlendirebilmek için toplumsal hafıza, kültürel bellek ve sözlü kültür üzerine teorik incelemeler ve kavramsal çerçeve oluşturularak bu destanı dillendiren Dengbêjlerin ses kayıtları deşifre edilip destana dair incelemeler yapılmıştır. Kültürel olarak doğa ve insan ilişkisine eleştirel yaklaşımıyla Japon yönetmen Hayao Miyazaki öne çıkmaktadır. Miyazaki'nin Prenses Mononoke, Ruhların Kaçışı ve Rüzgârlı Vadi animasyon filmleri bize `geçmiş`, `şimdi` ve `gelecek` üzerinden farklı bir perspektifte doğa algısı ve bununla bağlantılı yeni bir doğa-insan ilişkisi sunmaktadır. Miyazaki, doğa anlatılarını yaratırken Stüdyo Ghibli öncesi işlerinden ve kendi tecrübelerinden beslenmekte, sanatsal ve estetik felsefesini, kültürel, etik ve politik görüşlerini yansıtmaktadır.Bu tezde Miyazaki'nin bahsedilen üç filmi eko-eleştiri teorisinin Derin Ekoloji (Deep Ecology), Ekofeminizm (Ecofeminism) ve Karanlık Ekoloji (Dark Ecology) yaklaşımları üzerinden incelenmekte, doğa / modern dünya, feminen / maskülen, insan / hayvan gibi ikiliklere doğa-insan-teknoloji arasındaki ilişkiler üzerinden bakılmaktadır. Miyazaki bu ilişkileri kurarken iyi ve kötü ayrımına gitmemekte, doğa ve insan arasında uzlaşmacı karakterler yaratarak bize doğa ve insan müdahalesine dair bir denge sunmaktadır. Animizm inanışından beslenerek doğanın güçleri kami'ler üzerinden insanların nasıl kültürel vefiziksel bir kirlilik yarattığını, bunun doğayı nasıl etkilediğini göstermektedir. Global ecological crises are gradually being examined both in cultural and scientific terms all over the world as a concept as the relationship between nature and people is examined further. Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki stands out with his critical approach to the relationship between humans and nature. Miyazaki's animated films Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind provide us with a different perspective on Mother Earth and the relationship between nature and people in connection to `past`, `present` and `future`. Miyazaki feeds on his own experiences and early works, namely Studio Ghibli, and reflects his artistic and aesthetic philosophy in addition to his cultural, ethical and political views.In this thesis, Miyazaki's three films are examined through three approaches in ecocriticism: Deep Ecology, Ecofeminism and Dark Ecology. Miyazaki does not differentiate between `good` and `bad` in establishing these relationships. Furthermore, he creates compromising characters between the natural and man-made world and offers us a balance between nature and human intervention. Nurtured by the belief in animism, he shows how humans create both cultural and physical pollution through the forces of nature called `kami`s, and how it has an impact on the natural environment. Using the power of animation to animate the non-living, he provides an emotional connection between the audience and nature without being trapped in humanizing nature. In this way, Miyazaki's narratives are in harmony with the views of post-human theory. Bu çalışma online dating'in gündelik hayattaki yerini ve yakınlık kavramının online dating'deki yerini inceler. Tekrar etme ve gündelik hayat pratiğine dönüşmesiyle online dating, alışılageldik dating'den farklı bir yakınlık/samimiyet örüntüsünü cisimlendirir. Bu örüntünün, çeşitli faktörlerle oluştuğunu ve bu faktörlerin de olduğu var sayılan ya da hayal edilen yakınlık anlamına gelen `imagined intimacy` kavramını ortaya çıkardığını öne sürüyoruz.Olduğu hayal edilen yakınlığın varoluş nedenleri online dating'in yineleyen, döngüsel ve durumsal doğasından ileri gelir; öz-anlatı sosyo-kültürel sermayenin bir göstereni haline, taraflar arasındaki iletişim -tekrar ve sıklıkla- daha kırılgan hale ve online dating gündelik hayatın bir parçası haline gelir ve asıl yakınlık kavramının tutarlılığı ve sürekliliği kırılır. Araştırmamızla bu faktörleri anlamaya çalışırken, aynı zamanda olduğu hayal edilen yakınlığın online dating'de vücut bulan uyuşmazlıkları ve genel olarak dating'in değişen coğrafyasını açıklamada anlamlı olup olmadığı sorusunun cevabını aradık. Bu soruya cevap bulmak için özel amaç örneklemesi kullanarak online dating yapan insanlarla kapsamlı anket, görüşme ve araştırmalar yaptık. Araştırmamızın sonucunda, `imagined intimacy` kavramının online dating yapanlar arasında anlamlı olduğunu bulduk ve şans bulduğunda asıl yakınlığa dönüşebilme potansiyeli taşıdığını gördük. This study explores the place of online dating in the everyday life and the place of intimacy in online dating. Through repetition and becoming an everyday practice, online dating embodies a different pattern of intimacy than regular dating. We argue that this pattern is made up with a variety of factors and these factors give birth to the concept of `imagined intimacy`, which is an assumed, or imagined-to-be intimacy. Raison d'être of imagined intimacy arise from the iterative, cyclical, and situational natures of online dating; self-narration becomes a signifier of socio-cultural capital, the communication between parties become more fragile through repetition and frequency, and since online dating becomes a practice of everyday life; original intimacy's consistency and continuity gets broken. While we sought to understand these factors with this study, we also asked if imagined intimacy is relevant to explain the discrepancies embodied by online dating and the changing terrain of overall dating. We did extensive surveys and interviews with ten online daters by using purposive sampling to find an answer to this question and found out that the `imagined intimacy` is relevant and present among online daters. Moreover, when given a chance it has the potential to transform into an original intimacy. 101

Adanın ilk sahipleri olan Rum Ortodoks cemaatine mensup İmrozlular, Cumhuriyet’in kurulması itibarıyla etnik ve dini kimlikler üzerinde etkisini artıran ulus-devlet inşa siyasetinin mağdur aktörleridir. Lozan Antlaşması’yla birlikte temel haklarını garanti altına alan; ancak hayata tam anlamıyla geçirilemeyen azınlık rejimi ve İmrozluların mekân üzerinden kurguladıkları “yerel kimlikleri” iskân siyasetinin hedefi olmuştur. Bu çalışmada, Cumhuriyet Dönemi göç tarihi sınıflandırmalarında, resmî otoritenin zor kullanarak yürüttüğü iskân siyasetinin, Türkiye Devleti Hükümeti yönetimi altında yaşayan; etnik, dini ve dil bakımından azınlık gruplar üzerindeki etki gücünün nedenleri ve sonuçları İmroz örneğiyle ortaya konulmuştur. Adadaki Rum Ortodoks nüfus egemenliğindeki toplumsal dokunun değiştirilmesi amacıyla devletin iskân politikaları kapsamında adanın mevcut coğrafi, ekonomik ve sosyo-kültürel ortamına farklı yerlerden gelen göçmenler yerleştirilmiştir. Söz konusu göçmenlerin büyük bir kısmı aynı zamanda Anadolu’daki kalkındırma projeleri ile yerlerinden edilmiş kişilerdir. Hükümet politikaları kapsamında adaya iskân edilen göçmenler arasındaki tek ortak payda ise Müslüman kimlikleridir. Bu bağlamda, adaya yerleştirilen göçmenlerin sahip oldukları farklı yaşam biçimleriyle, adadaki gündelik yaşam pratiklerine ve üretim şekillerine uyum sağlamaya çalışırken vermiş oldukları “hayatta kalma mücadeleleri”nin, adanın ekonomik, sosyo-kültürel, demografik yapısını ve ayrıca mimari dokusunu bilinçli ya da bilinçsiz nasıl değiştirdiklerinin üzerinde durmak bu çalışmanın temel hedefidir. Buna ek olarak, İmroz adasında yaşanan değişimin Türkleştirme politikalarının bir sonucu olarak hem yerli İmroz halkını hem de kalkındırma projeleriyle devletin yaşam alanlarını yok ettiği grupları karşılıklı olarak irdelemek ve iki grup arasında ilişki kurmak gerekir. The settlement policy, which is accepted as one of the policies of political power throughout the history of the Republic, has shown its effect in Imbros. The Imbrosians, the first owners of the island, as the members of the Greek Orthodox community, are the victims of the nation-state building policy through which the influence on ethnic and religious identities were increased. The minority regime, which guaranteed the fundamental rights of the minorities with the Lausanne Treaty but could not be implemented sufficiently, and “local identities” that were built by the Imbros people had been the targets of the settlement policies. In this context, the influences, as well as the reasons, of the settlement policy, which was conducted by the state authorities as a “use of force” according to the history of migration classifications, on ethnically, religiously, and linguistically minorities living under the governance of the Republic of Turkey have disclosed itself in the Imbros case. As a part of state’s settlement policies to change Greek Orthodox fabric of the island, immigrants from various backgrounds were settled in the existing geographical, economical and socio-cultural environment of the island. Most of the related migrants were at the same time those who were displaced from the Anatolia due to development projects there. The only common denominator among the migrants settled in the island within the scope of government policies is their Muslim identity. In this context, the main objective of this study is to focus on how the migrants settled in the island with their various ways of life, either consciously or unconsciously, have changed the economic, socio-cultural, demographic and also architectural fabric of the island as a result of their “survival struggle” in trying to adopt to the practices of everyday life and production processes in the island. In addition to that, accepted as a part of Turkification policies that affected Imbros, it is necessary to respectively examine both the local Imbros people and the groups whose living spaces had been destroyed by the development projects of the state, and it is necessary to establish the relationship between these two groups. It is important to interpret the policies of the central authority throughout the history of the Republic in terms of both the Imbrosian Greeks and the migrants from the Anatolia who settled in the island.

Kürt tarihi okumalarına kaynaklık eden, Kürt sözlü kültürü içinde karşılaştığımız dengbêjlik, kültürün geçmişten günümüze taşınmasını sağlayan bir gelenek olarak görülmektedir. Bu geleneğin aktarıcıları olarak dengbêjler, sözlü tarih ve sözlü kültür açısından birincil kaynak olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Dengbêjlik, kadınların ve erkeklerin sürdürdüğü bir gelenek olmasına rağmen tarihsel süreçte erkekler bu geleneğin temsilcileri olarak daha görünür olmuş, ataerkil toplum yapısı ve dinsel söylemler kadın dengbêjlerin görünürlüğünün önüne geçmiştir. Sözlü gelenekten koparılması mümkün olmayan kadınlar buna rağmen üretmeye devam etmiş ve bu gelenekte yerini almıştır. Bu tez sözlü gelenek ve şarkıları merkeze alarak bu çalışma, literatürü henüz oluşturulmamış olan Kürt kadın tarihine dengbêj/stranbêj anlatıları üzerinden bakmayı amaçlamaktadır. Türkiye'de 1938-1984 yılları arasında yaşamış dengbêj-stranbêj Eyşe Şan üzerinden dengbêjlik geleneği içinde kadınların, özne olarak konumlarını ve sanatın bir karşı duruş olarak alan açması tartışmaktadır. Tarihine dair çok az yazılı kaynak bulunan Eyşe Şan'ın stranları ve içerdiği temalar dengbêjlik üzerinden Kürt kadın tarihini ve karış duruş biçimlerini anlamak için önemli bir alan açmaktadır. Musical performing culture of 'Dengbêj' that is a part Kurdish oral culture and an important source of Kurdish history, is often seen as a tradition that enables the transmission of culture from past to present. Historically both men and women have always been the performers of dengbêj as the agents of this tradition and the primary source of oral history and oral culture. In the history, however, while men have been recognized as the visible representatives of dengbej, women were left behind in this practice by the patriarchial structure. Yet women continued to claim their presence as dengbej. By focusing on the story of women dengbej Eyşe Şan, who lived in Turkey between the years 1938-1984, this study aims to understand understudied area of Kurdish women' history through dengbêj / stranbêj (singer) narratives. Emerging themes in the songs of Eyse San form a significant space for understanding Kurdish women's history and their forms of resistance. 97

Bu çalışma, Türkiye'deki İngilizce öğretmenlerinin mesleki kimliklerini araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Buna ek olarak, kişisel ve mesleki tecrübelerin Türkiye'deki yabancı dil öğretmenlerinin kimliklerine etkisini anlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmanın katılımcıları, Türkiye'deki devlet üniversitelerinde görev yapan üç Türk yabancı dil öğretmenidir. Bu çalışmanın amacı katılımcıların kendi yarattıkları anlamları ortaya çıkarmak olduğundan bu çalışma için vaka incelemesi seçilmiştir. Bu amacı gerçekleştirmek için veriler, devlet üniversitelerinde çalışan üç yabancı dil öğretmeninden yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler ve Yaşam Ağacı ve Metafor gibi yazılı ödevler vasıtasıyla toplanmıştır. Görüşmeler, her bir katılımcıyla bireysel olarak ve kendilerini daha iyi ifade etmelerini sağlamak için Türkçe dilinde yapılmıştır. Verilerin tümü kaydedilmiş, yazılı kopyası çıkartılmış ve İngilizce'ye çevrilmiştir. Öğretmenlerin mesleki kimlik algılarını ortaya çıkarmak için veriler, bir nitel araştırma yöntemi olan tematik analiz ile incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın ana bulguları, geçmiş öğrenme tecrübeleri, öğretme tecrübeleri ve hayatlarındaki önemli kişiler başta olmak üzere kişisel ve mesleki tecrübelerin, yabancı dil öğretmeni olarak katılımcıların mesleki kimliklerinde önemli etkileri olduğunu ortaya çıkarmıştır. Bunun yanı sıra bulgular, katılımcıların toplum algısı, otorite ve kültür konularında ortak ve farklı görüşlere sahip olduğunu göstermiştir. The aim of the study is to explore the professional identity of English language teachers in the Turkish context. The study also aims to find out personal and professional experiences that influence teacher identity of Turkish EFL teachers within the Turkish context. The participants of the study are three Turkish EFL teachers employed by state universities in Istanbul, Turkey. Case study method was chosen for this study since the aim is to gain insight into an in-depth understanding of participants' own meaning-making. In order to gain insights about the participants own meaning-making, data were collected from three EFL teachers at state universities by means of semi-structured interviews and written tasks i.e., Tree of Life and metaphor activity. The interviews were conducted with each participant individually and in Turkish for a better self-reflection. They were all tape recorded, converted into the verbatim transcript, and translated into English. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis, which is a qualitative research methodology, to unveil the teachers' perceptions towards teachers' professional identity. The main findings of the research revealed that personal and professional experiences of the participants, especially their prior learning experiences, teaching experiences and significant others in their lives, had a significant influence on their identities as Turkish EFL teachers. The results also indicated that the participants had both common and distinct perception of society, authority and culture depending on their personal and professional backgrounds. Bu çalışma zaman zaman medya araçlarının çoğunun ilgisini çeken ve toplumu tetikleyip bu platformlarda kendisine hatırı sayılır yer edinen Ahlaki Panik kavramın bu ilgiyi zamanla nasıl kaybedip kendisine bu platformlarda artık yer edinemediği üzerine odaklanmıştır. Netleştirmek gerekirse, bu çalışma ahlaki paniğin bu değişkenliğini ayrıntılı bir biçimde ortaya koymuştur. İlk olarak Jock Young tarafından ele alınan bu kavramın anlaşılması için Türkiye'deki dört büyük gazete analiz edilmiştir. Bilindiği üzere, ahlaki panik zaman zaman farklı konseptler, durumlar, olaylar etrafında gelişir. Daha net olmak adına, bu çalışma sığınmacı krizinin dört ana akım gazetenin analizlerine dayandırılmıştır. Bu çalışmada sığınmacı krizinin söylem analizi yöntemiyle ele alınma biçimi çalışılmıştır. Bu çalışmanın sonucunda insan hakları gibi evrensel değerlerin sığınmacı krizi perspektifinden nasıl ihlal edilebildiğini ancak aynı zamanda yetkilileri adım atmaları konusunda nasıl cesaretlendirildiği gösterilmiştir.. Mülteci krizinin ulusal ana akım dört gazete tarafından nasıl ele alındığı ve ele alış biçimleri açısından gazetelerin duruşları çalışılmıştır. Bu gazeteler Hürriyet, Posta, Yeni Şafak ve Cumhuriyet tir. Bu gazeteler birbiriyle çelişen politik ve ideolojik duruşlarıyla bilinirler. Sığınmacı krizi ve onu takip eden sosyal süreç toplumda endişeye neden olmuştur. Bu süreçte bahsi geçen endişe paranoyaya varmıştır. Çoğunlukla günümüzde azalan bu ahlaki paniğin oluşumunda medyanın rolü/katılımı analiz edilmiştir The following study is dwelling on the concept of moral panic on the basis of how throughout time a case that triggers society and covers up a great deal of the media platforms may well steer back and so do not get attention from the public at all. To put simply, this study elaborates on, to some extent, interchangeability of the term moral panic.To get how this concept first cited by Jock Young takes place, I will provide a detail analysis of data primarily conducted by four mainstream newspapers in Turkey. As widely appreciated from time to time moral panic revolves around different concepts, cases, incidents, etc. And so to be more precise, this study presents an analysis of the refugee crisis through a detailed analysis of four mainstream newspapers. Discourse analysis of the framing processes of the refugee crisis will be used in this study. It is the outcome of the study that illustrates how universal values like human rights in the framework of refugee crisis can be violated but also encourages officials to take steps accordingly thanks to new media platforms. How the refugee crisis was framed in four mainstream national newspapers and how their way of covering the issue differs in terms of their stands are studied. The newspapers are Hürriyet, Posta, Cumhuriyet, and Yeni Şafak. These newspapers are known for their political and ideological stands that are contradictory to one another. The case of refugee crisis and the social process following it resulted in a haunted times that triggers public concerns. During the time, the mentioned concerns even go up to reaching a paranoia. The media's participation in creating this moral panic that disappeared to a great extent today, is to be analyzed. 161
