Using surface-templated electrophoretic deposition, we have created arrays of polymer beads (photonic units) incorporating photo-switchable DAE molecules, which can be reversibly and individually switched between high and low emission states by direct photo-excitation, without any energy or electron transfer processes within the molecular system. The micropatterned array of these photonic units is spectroscopically characterized in detail and optimized with respect to both signal contrast and cross-talk. The optimum optical parameters including laser intensity, wavelength and duration of irradiation are elucidated and ideal conditions for creating reversible on/off cycles in a micropatterned array are determined. 500 such cycles are demonstrated with no obvious on/off contrast attenuation. The ability to process binary information is demonstrated by selectively writing information to the given photonic unit, reading the resultant emissive signal pattern and finally erasing the information again, which in turn demonstrates the possibility of continuous recording. The origin of interband electron pairing responsible for enhancing superconductivity and the factors controlling its strength were examined. We show that the interband electron pairing is a natural consequence of breaking down the Born-Oppenheimer approximation during the electron-phonon interactions. Its strength is determined by the pair-state excitations around the Fermi surfaces that take place to form a superconducting state. Fermi surfaces favorable for the pairing were found and its implications were discussed., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The relationships among the pressure P, volume V, and temperature T of solid-state materials are described by their equations of state (EOSs), which are often derived from the consideration of the finite-strain energy or the interatomic potential.1-3 These EOSs consist of typically three parameters to determine from experimental P-V-T data by fitting analyses. In the empirical approach to EOSs, one either refines such fitting parameters or improves the mathematical functions3-5 to better simulate the experimental data. Despite over seven decades of studies on EOSs, none has been found to be accurate for all types of solids over the whole temperature and pressure ranges studied experimentally.3,6,7 Here we show that the simple empirical EOS, P = {\alpha}1(PV) + {\alpha}2(PV)2 + {\alpha}3(PV)3, in which the pressure P is indirectly related to the volume V through a cubic polynomial of the energy term PV with three fitting parameters {\alpha}1 - {\alpha}3, provides accurate descriptions for the P-vs-V data of condensed matter in a wide region of pressure studied experimentally even in the presence of phase transitions, Comment: 59 pages; 3 tables and 2 figures in the main text; numerous tables and figures in the supporting information; For further information please see http://www.nature.com/srep/journal-policies/editorial-policies/#confidentiality

The magneto-optical activity of high quality transparent thin films of insulating EuTiO3 (ETO) deposited on a thin SrTiO3 (STO) substrate with both being non-magnetic materials are demonstrated to be a versatile tool for light modulation. The operating temperature is close to room temperature and admits multiple device engineering. By using small magnetic fields birefringence of the samples can be switched off and on. Similarly, rotation of the sample in the field can modify its birefringence {\Delta}n. In addition, {\Delta}n can be increased by a factor of 4 in very modest fields with simultaneously enhancing the operating temperature by almost 100K., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

The spins of the low-spin Ir4+ (S = 1/2, d5) ions at the octahedral sites of the oxides Sr3NiIrO6, Sr2IrO4 and Na2IrO3 exhibit preferred orientations with respect to their IrO6 octahedra. We evaluated the magnetic anisotropies of these S = 1/2 ions on the basis of DFT calculations including spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and probed their origin by performing perturbation theory analyses with SOC as perturbation within the LS coupling scheme. The observed spin orientations of Sr3NiIrO6 and Sr2IrO4 are correctly predicted by DFT calculations, and are accounted for by the perturbation theory analysis. As for the spin orientation of Na2IrO3, both experimental studies and DFT calculations have not been unequivocal. Our analysis reveals that the Ir4+ spin orientation of Na2IrO3 should have nonzero components along the c- and a-axes directions. The spin orientations determined by DFT calculations are sensitive to the accuracy of the crystal structures employed, which is explained by perturbation theory analyses when interactions between adjacent Ir4+ ions are taken into consideration. There are indications implying that the 5d electrons of Na2IrO3 are less strongly localized compared with those of Sr3NiIrO6 and Sr2IrO4. This implication was confirmed by showing that the Madelung potentials of the Ir4+ ions are less negative in Na2IrO3 than in Sr3NiIrO6, Sr2IrO4. Most transition-metal S = 1/2 ions do have magnetic anisotropies because the SOC induces interactions among their crystal-field split d-states, and the associated mixing of the states modifies only the orbital parts of the states. This finding cannot be mimicked by a spin Hamiltonian because this model Hamiltonian lacks the orbital degree of freedom, thereby leading to the spin-half syndrome. H2S is converted under ultrahigh pressure (> 110 GPa) to a metallic phase that becomes superconducting with a record Tc of 200 K. It has been proposed that the superconducting phase is body-centered cubic H3S ( Im3m , a = 3.089 {\AA}) resulting from a decomposition reaction 3H2S --> 2H3S + S. The analogy of H2S and H2O leads us to a very different conclusion. The well-known dissociation of water into H3O+ and OH- increases by orders of magnitude under pressure. An equivalent behavior of H2S is anticipated under pressure with the dissociation, 2H2S --> H3S+ + SH- forming a perovskite structure (SH-)(H3S+), which consists of corner-sharing SH6 octahedra with SH- at each A-site (i.e., the center of each S8 cube). Our DFT calculations show that the perovskite (SH-)(H3S+) is thermodynamically more stable than the Im3m structure of H3S, and suggest that the A-site H atoms are most likely fluxional even at Tc., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables The mistakes for the enthalpy and the free energy changes for Eq. 1 (namely, half the energy of H2 was used instead of the full energy of H2) was corrected. A comparative analysis of the structural phase transitions of EuTiO3 and SrTiO3 (at TS = 282 and 105 K, respectively) is made on the basis of phonon-dispersion and density functional calculations. The phase transition of EuTiO3 is predicted to arise from the softening of a transverse acoustic zone-boundary mode caused by the rotations of the TiO6 octahedra, as also found for the phase transition of SrTiO3. While the temperature dependence of the soft mode is similar in both compounds, their elastic properties differ drastically due to a large difference in the double-well potentials associated with the soft zone boundary-acoustic mode., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

The similarity of the electronic structures of NaFeAs and other Fe pnictides has been demonstrated on the basis of first-principle calculations. The global double-degeneracy of electronic bands along X-M and R-A direction indicates the instability of Fe pnictides and is explained on the basis of a tight-binding model. The de Haas-van Alphen parameters for the Fermi surface (FS) of NaFeAs have been calculated. A $\mathbf{Q}_{M}=(1/2,1/2,0)$ spin density wave (SDW) instead of a charge density wave (CDW) ground state is predicted based on the calculated generalized susceptibility $\chi(\mathbf{q})$ and a criterion derived from a restricted Hatree-Fock model. The strongest electron-phonon (e-p) coupling has been found to involve only As, Na z-direction vibration with linear-response calculations. A possible enhancement mechanism for e-p coupling due to correlation is suggested.
