Extremely high pressures over a million of atmospheres are required to deform diamonds permanently. Under dynamic high-pressure conditions, even such strong materials lose their strengths so rapidly that the initially pristine lattice transforms into complex dynamics. Here, we report femtosecond x-ray diffraction observations that directly resolve how shock waves deform the crystal lattice in the isotropic nano-polycrystalline form of diamond. The results show that the nano-grain reinforced diamond retains its strength at shock pressures far beyond its elastic limit until it finally approaches zero at 707 GPa, indicating the existence of brittle-ductile transition of nano-polycrystalline diamond under high-strain rate shock compression. The atomic-level deformation process of the diamond observed in this study is a key benchmark for designing high strength materials and simulating their behavior under extreme conditions.

The propagation of a shock wave in solids can stress them to ultra-high pressures of millions of atmospheres. Understanding the behavior of matter at these extreme pressures is essential to describe a wide range of physical phenomena, including the formation of planets, young stars and cores of super-Earths, as well as the behavior of advanced ceramic materials subjected to such stresses. Under megabar (Mbar) pressure, even a solid with high strength exhibits plastic properties, causing the shock wave to split in two. This phenomenon is described by theoretical models, but without direct experimental measurements to confirm them, their validity is still in doubt. Here, we present the results of an experiment in which the evolution of the coupled elastic-plastic wave structure in diamond was directly observed and studied with submicron spatial resolution, using the unique capabilities of the X-ray free-electron laser. The direct measurements allowed, for the first time, the fitting and validation of a strength model for diamond in the range of several Mbar by performing continuum mechanics simulations in 2D geometry. The presented experimental approach to the study of shock waves in solids opens up new possibilities for the direct verification and construction of the equations of state of matter in the ultra-high pressure range, which are relevant for the solution of a variety of problems in high energy density physics., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures, submitted to Nature

Investigating the potential benefits of the use of magnetic fields in Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) experiments has given rise to new experimental platforms like the Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion (MagLIF) approach at the Z-machine (Sandia National Laboratories), or its laser-driven equivalent at OMEGA (Laboratory for Laser Energetics). Implementing these platforms at MJ-scale laser facilities, such as the Laser MegaJoule (LMJ) or the National Ignition Facility (NIF), is crucial to reaching self-sustained nuclear fusion and enlarges the level of magnetization that can be achieved through a higher compression. In this paper, we present a complete design of an experimental platform for magnetized implosions using cylindrical targets at LMJ. A seed magnetic field is generated along the axis of the cylinder using laser-driven coil targets, minimizing debris and increasing diagnostic access compared with pulsed power field generators. We present a comprehensive simulation study of the initial B-field generated with these coil targets, as well as 2-dimensional extended magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) simulations showing that a 5T initial B-field is compressed up to 25kT during the implosion. Under these circumstances, the electrons become magnetized, which severely modifies the plasma conditions at stagnation. In particular, in the hot spot the electron temperature is increased (from 1keV to 5keV) while the density is reduced (from 40gcc to 7gcc). We discuss how these changes can be diagnosed using X-ray imaging and spectroscopy, and particle diagnostics. We propose the simultaneous use of two dopants in the fuel (Ar and Kr) to act as spectroscopic tracers. We show that this introduces an effective spatial resolution in the plasma which permits an unambiguous observation of the B-field effects. Additionally, we present a plan for future experiments of this kind at LMJ.

The interplay between non-trivial topological states of matter and strong electronic correlations is one of the most compelling open questions in condensed matter physics. Due to experimental challenges, there is an increasing desire to find more microscopic techniques to complement the results of more traditional experiments. In this work, we locally explore the Kondo insulator Sm$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{6}$ by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) of Gd$^{3+}$ ions at low temperatures. Our analysis reveals that the Gd$^{3+}$ ESR line shape shows an anomalous evolution as a function of temperature, wherein for highly dilute samples (x $\approx$ 0.0002) the Gd$^{3+}$ ESR line shape changes from a localized ESR local moment character to a diffusive-like character. Upon manipulating the sample surface with a focused ion beam we demonstrate, in combination with electrical resistivity measurements, that the localized character of the Gd$^{3+}$ ESR line shape is recovered by increasing the penetration of the microwave in the sample. This provides compelling evidence for the contribution of surface or near-surface excitations to the relaxation mechanism in the Gd$^{3+}$ spin dynamics. We show that the resistivity plateau of SmB$_6$ at low temperature, typically taken as a hallmark of its conducting surface state, can systematically be influenced by different surface treatments. We investigate the effect of inflicting an increasing number of hand-made scratches and microscopically defined focused ion beam-cut trenches on the surfaces of flux-grown Sm$_{1-x}$Gd$_x$B$_6$ with $x =$ 0, 0.0002. Both treatments increase the resistance of the low-temperature plateau, whereas the bulk resistance at higher temperature largely remains unaffected. Notably, the temperature at which the resistance deviates from the thermally activated behavior decreases with cumulative surface damage. These features are more pronounced for the focused ion beam treated samples, with the difference likely being related to the absence of microscopic defects like subsurface cracks. Galaxy clusters are filled with hot, diffuse X-ray emitting plasma, with a stochastically tangled magnetic field whose energy is close to equipartition with the energy of the turbulent motions \cite{zweibel1997, Vacca}. In the cluster cores, the temperatures remain anomalously high compared to what might be expected considering that the radiative cooling time is short relative to the Hubble time \cite{cowie1977,fabian1994}. While feedback from the central active galactic nuclei (AGN) \cite{fabian2012,birzan2012,churazov2000} is believed to provide most of the heating, there has been a long debate as to whether conduction of heat from the bulk to the core can help the core to reach the observed temperatures \cite{narayan2001,ruszkowski2002,kunz2011}, given the presence of tangled magnetic fields. Interestingly, evidence of very sharp temperature gradients in structures like cold fronts implies a high degree of suppression of thermal conduction \cite{markevitch2007}. To address the problem of thermal conduction in a magnetized and turbulent plasma, we have created a replica of such a system in a laser laboratory experiment. Our data show a reduction of local heat transport by two orders of magnitude or more, leading to strong temperature variations on small spatial scales, as is seen in cluster plasmas \cite{markevitch2003}.

We report a laser-plasma experiment that was carried out at the LMJ-PETAL facility and realized the first magnetized, turbulent, supersonic plasma with a large magnetic Reynolds number ($\mathrm{Rm} \approx 45$) in the laboratory. Initial seed magnetic fields were amplified, but only moderately so, and did not become dynamically significant. A notable absence of magnetic energy at scales smaller than the outer scale of the turbulent cascade was also observed. Understanding magnetic-field generation and amplification in turbulent plasma is essential to account for observations of magnetic fields in the universe. A theoretical framework attributing the origin and sustainment of these fields to the so-called fluctuation dynamo was recently validated by experiments on laser facilities in low-magnetic-Prandtl-number plasmas ($\mathrm{Pm} < 1$). However, the same framework proposes that the fluctuation dynamo should operate differently when $\mathrm{Pm} \gtrsim 1$, the regime relevant to many astrophysical environments such as the intracluster medium of galaxy clusters. This paper reports a new experiment that creates a laboratory $\mathrm{Pm} \gtrsim 1$ plasma dynamo for the first time. We provide a time-resolved characterization of the plasma's evolution, measuring temperatures, densities, flow velocities and magnetic fields, which allows us to explore various stages of the fluctuation dynamo's operation. The magnetic energy in structures with characteristic scales close to the driving scale of the stochastic motions is found to increase by almost three orders of magnitude from its initial value and saturate dynamically. It is shown that the growth of these fields occurs exponentially at a rate that is much greater than the turnover rate of the driving-scale stochastic motions. Our results point to the possibility that plasma turbulence produced by strong shear can generate fields more efficiently at the driving scale than anticipated by idealized MHD simulations of the nonhelical fluctuation dynamo; this finding could help explain the large-scale fields inferred from observations of astrophysical systems., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

The delafossite metals PdCoO$_{2}$, PtCoO$_{2}$ and PdCrO$_{2}$ are among the highest conductivity materials known, with low temperature mean free paths of tens of microns in the best as-grown single crystals. A key question is whether these very low resistive scattering rates result from strongly suppressed backscattering due to special features of the electronic structure, or are a consequence of highly unusual levels of crystalline perfection. We report the results of experiments in which high energy electron irradiation was used to introduce point disorder to the Pd and Pt layers in which the conduction occurs. We obtain the cross-section for formation of Frenkel pairs in absolute units, and cross-check our analysis with first principles calculations of the relevant atomic displacement energies. We observe an increase of resistivity that is linear in defect density with a slope consistent with scattering in the unitary limit. Our results enable us to deduce that the as-grown crystals contain extremely low levels of in-plane defects of approximately $0.001\%$. This confirms that crystalline perfection is the most important factor in realizing the long mean free paths, and highlights how unusual these delafossite metals are in comparison with the vast majority of other multi-component oxides and alloys. We discuss the implications of our findings for future materials research.

We present the results of spectroscopy campaigns for planetary nebula candidates, where we have identified four objects as Seyfert galaxies. All observations have been carried out by a group of French amateur astronomers. During the campaigns at the Cote d'Azur observatory at Calern (France), four HII galaxies could be identified. Using the naming convention of our campaign, these objects are (1) App 1 (RA: 22h 49m 20.23s, DEC: +46{\deg}07{\arcmin}37.17{\arcsec}), (2) Pre 21 (RA: 18h 04m 19.62s, DEC: +00{\deg}08{\arcmin}04.96{\arcsec}), (3) Pre 24 (RA: 04h 25m 53.63s, DEC: +39{\deg}49{\arcmin}19.69{\arcsec}), and (4) Ra 69 (RA: 19h 30m 23.64s, DEC: +37{\deg}37{\arcmin}06.58{\arcsec}).

The motivation to search for signatures of superconductivity in Weyl semi-metals and other topological phases lies in their potential for hosting exotic phenomena such as nonzero-momentum pairing or the Majorana fermion, a viable candidate for the ultimate realization of a scalable quantum computer. Until now, however, all known reports of superconductivity in Weyl semimetals have arisen through surface contact with a sharp tip, focused ion-beam surface treatment or the application of high pressures. Here, we demonstrate the observation of superconductivity in single crystals, even an as-grown crystal, of the Weyl semi-metal tantalum phosphide (TaP), at ambient pressure. A superconducting transition temperature, $Tc$, varying between 1.7 and 5.3 K, is observed in different samples, both as-grown and microscopic samples processed with focused ion beam (FIB) etching. Our data show that the superconductivity present in the as-grown crystal is inhomogeneous yet exists in the bulk. For samples fabricated with FIB, we observe, in addition to the bulk superconductivity, a second superconducting state that resides on the sample surface. Through measurements of the characteristic fields as a function of temperature and angle, we are able to confirm the dimensionality of the two distinct superconducting phases., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

Identifying the sources of the highest energy cosmic rays requires understanding how they are deflected by the stochastic, spatially intermittent intergalactic magnetic field. Here we report measurements of energetic charged-particle propagation through a laser-produced magnetized plasma with these properties. We characterize the diffusive transport of the particles experimentally. The results show that the transport is diffusive and that, for the regime of interest for the highest-energy cosmic rays, the diffusion coefficient is unaffected by the spatial intermittency of the magnetic field., Comment: Updated Author and Reviewer Information, 23 pages 17 figures

Water, ethanol, and ammonia are the key components of the mantles of Uranus and Neptune. To improve structure and evolution models and give an explanation of the magnetic fields and luminosities of the icy giants, those components need to be characterised at planetary conditions (some Mbar and a few $10^3$ K). Those conditions are typical of the Warm Dense Matter regime, which exhibits a rich phase diagram, with the coexistence of many states of matter and a large variety of chemical processes. H$_2$O, C:H:O, and C:H:N:O mixtures have been compressed up to 2.8 Mbar along the principal Hugoniot using laser-driven decaying shocks. The experiments were performed at the GEKKO XII and LULI 2000 laser facilities using standard optical diagnostics (Doppler velocimetry and pyrometry) to characterise equation of state and optical reflectivity of the shocked states. The results show that H$_2$O and the C:H:N:O mixture share the same equation of state with a density scaling, while the reflectivity behaves differently by what concerns both the onset pressures and the saturation values. The reflectivity measurement at two frequencies allows to estimate the conductivity and the complex refractive index using a Drude model.

A new target design is presented to model high-energy radiative accretion shocks in polars. In this paper, we present the experimental results obtained on the GEKKO XII laser facility for the POLAR project. The experimental results are compared with 2D FCI2 simulations to characterize the dynamics and the structure of plasma flow before and after the collision. The good agreement between simulations and experimental data confirm the formation of a reverse shock where cooling losses start modifying the post-shock region. With the multi-material structure of the target, a hydrodynamic collimation is exhibited and a radiative structure coupled with the reverse shock is highlighted in both experimental data and simulations. The flexibility on the laser energy produced on GEKKO XII, allowed us to produce high-velocity flows and study new and interesting radiation hydrodynamic regimes between those obtained on the LULI2000 and Orion laser facilities., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, accepted in High Power Laser Science and Engineering journal

The universe is permeated by magnetic fields, with strengths ranging from a femtogauss in the voids between the filaments of galaxy clusters to several teragauss in black holes and neutron stars. The standard model behind cosmological magnetic fields is the nonlinear amplification of seed fields via turbulent dynamo to the values observed. We have conceived experiments that aim to demonstrate and study the turbulent dynamo mechanism in the laboratory. Here we describe the design of these experiments through simulation campaigns using FLASH, a highly capable radiation magnetohydrodynamics code that we have developed, and large-scale three-dimensional simulations on the Mira supercomputer at Argonne National Laboratory. The simulation results indicate that the experimental platform may be capable of reaching a turbulent plasma state and study dynamo amplification. Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the Universe. Extragalactic disks, halos and clusters have consistently been shown, via diffuse radio-synchrotron emission and Faraday rotation measurements, to exhibit magnetic field strengths ranging from a few nG to tens of $\mu$G. The energy density of these fields is typically comparable to the energy density of the fluid motions of the plasma in which they are embedded, making magnetic fields essential players in the dynamics of the luminous matter. The standard theoretical model for the origin of these strong magnetic fields is through the amplification of tiny seed fields via turbulent dynamo to the level consistent with current observations. Here we demonstrate, using laser-produced colliding plasma flows, that turbulence is indeed capable of rapidly amplifying seed fields to near equipartition with the turbulent fluid motions. A ferromagnetic quantum critical point is thought not to exist in two and three-dimensional metallic systems yet is realized in the Kondo lattice compound YbNi4(P,As)2, possibly due to its one-dimensionality. It is crucial to investigate the dimensionality of the Fermi surface of YbNi4P2 experimentally but common probes such as ARPES and quantum oscillation measurements are lacking. Here, we studied the magnetic field dependence of transport and thermodynamic properties of YbNi4P2. The Kondo effect is continuously suppressed and additionally we identify nine Lifshitz transitions between 0.4 and 18 T. We analyze the transport coefficients in detail and identify the type of Lifshitz transitions as neck or void type to gain information on the Fermi surface of YbNi4P2. The large number of Lifshitz transitions observed within this small energy window is unprecedented and results from the particular flat renormalized band structure with strong 4f-electron character shaped by the Kondo lattice effect., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We report an experimental study of the phase diagrams of periclase (MgO), enstatite (MgSiO3) and forsterite (Mg2SiO4) at high pressures. We investigated with laser driven decaying shocks the pressure/temperature curves of MgO, MgSiO3 and Mg2SiO4 between 0.2-1.2 TPa, 0.12-0.5 TPa and 0.2-0.85 TPa respectively. A melting signature has been observed in MgO at 0.47 TPa and 9860 K, while no phase changes were observed neither in MgSiO3 nor in Mg2SiO4. An increasing of reflectivity of MgO, MgSiO3 and Mg2SiO4 liquids have been detected at 0.55 TPa -12 760 K, 0.15 TPa - 7540 K, 0.2 TPa - 5800 K, respectively. In contrast to SiO2, melting and metallization of these compounds do not coincide implying the presence of poor electrically conducting liquids close to the melting lines. This has important implications for the generation of dynamos in Super-earths mantles.

Experimental and theoretical studies on ratchet effects in graphene with a lateral superlattice excited by alternating electric fields of terahertz frequency range are presented. A lateral superlatice deposited on top of monolayer graphene is formed either by periodically repeated metal stripes having different widths and spacings or by inter-digitated comb-like dual-grating-gate (DGG) structures. We show that the ratchet photocurrent excited by terahertz radiation and sensitive to the radiation polarization state can be efficiently controlled by the back gate driving the system through the Dirac point as well as by the lateral asymmetry varied by applying unequal voltages to the DGG subgratings. The ratchet photocurrent includes the Seebeck thermoratchet effect as well as the effects of "linear" and "circular" ratchets, sensitive to the corresponding polarization of the driving electromagnetic force. The experimental data are analyzed for the electronic and plasmonic ratchets taking into account the calculated potential profile and the near field acting on carriers in graphene. We show that the photocurrent generation is based on a combined action of a spatially periodic in-plane potential and the spatially modulated light due to the near field effects of the light diffraction.

Several important geophysical features such as heat flux at the Core-Mantle Boundary or geodynamo production are intimately related with the temperature profile in the Earth's core. However, measuring the melting curve of iron at conditions corresponding to the Earth inner core boundary under pressure of 330 GPa has eluded scientists for several decades. Significant discrepancies in previously reported iron melting temperatures at high pressure have called into question the validity of dynamic measurements. We report measurements made with a novel approach using X-ray absorption spectroscopy using an X-ray free electron laser source coupled to a laser shock experiment. We determine the state of iron along the shock Hugoniot up to 420 GPa (+/- 50) and 10800 K (+/- 1390) and find an upper boundary for the melting curve of iron by detecting solid iron at 130 GPa and molten at 260, 380 and 420 GPa along the shock Hugoniot. Our result establishes unambiguous agreement between dynamic measurement and recent extrapolations from static data thus resolving the long-standing controversy over the reliability of using dynamic compression to study the melting of iron at conditions close to the Earth's inner core boundary and beyond., Comment: 9 pages 3 figures

Interaction between a central outflow and a surrounding wind is common in astrophysical sources powered by accretion. Understanding how the interaction might help to collimate the inner central outflow is of interest for assessing astrophysical jet formation paradigms. In this context, we studied the interaction between two nested supersonic plasma flows generated by focusing a long pulse high-energy laser beam onto a solid target. A nested geometry was created by shaping the energy distribution at the focal spot with a dedicated phase plate. Optical and X-ray diagnostics were used to study the interacting flows. Experimental results and numerical hydrodynamic simulations indeed show the formation of strongly collimated jets. Preliminary experiments have been performed to investigate the effects of radiative cooling on plasma jets. Thin (3 um - 5 um) conical shells were irradiated with an intense laser, driving jets with velocities > 100 km/s. Through use of different target materials - aluminium, copper and gold - the degree of radiative losses was altered, and their importance for jet collimation investigated. A number of temporally resoved optical diagnostics was used, providing information about the jet evolution. Recent developments of dynamic x-ray characterization experiments of dense matter are reviewed, with particular emphasis on conditions relevant to interiors of terrestrial and gas giant planets. These studies include characterization of compressed states of matter in light elements by x-ray scattering and imaging of shocked iron by radiography. Several applications of this work are examined. These include the structure of massive "Super Earth" terrestrial planets around other stars, the 40 known extrasolar gas giants with measured masses and radii, and Jupiter itself, which serves as the benchmark for giant planets., Comment: Accepted to Physics of Plasmas special issue. We report the first electrical manipulation and detection of the mesoscopic intrinsic spin-Hall effect (ISHE) in semiconductors through non-local electrical measurement in nano-scale H-shaped structures built on high mobility HgTe/HgCdTe quantum wells. By controlling the strength of the spin-orbit splittings and the n-type to p-type transition by a top-gate, we observe a large non-local resistance signal due to the ISHE in the p-regime, of the order of kOhms, which is several orders of magnitude larger than in metals. In the n-regime, as predicted by theory, the signal is at least an order of magnitude smaller.
