Abstract

Introduction: While genetic aberrations are becoming increasingly critical in disease classification, morphological abnormalities defined by a 10% threshold in each lineage continue to play a significant role as a diagnostic tool for myelodysplastic neoplasms (MDS). However, erythroid lineage dysplasia has been reported in some cases of aplastic anemia (AA), a phenomenon noted as common in the UK guidelines. Methods: We assessed the impact of erythroid dysplasia on the survival in AA patients enrolled in an ongoing prospective registry, central morphological review (blinded), and follow-up study of AA and MDS conducted by the Japanese National Research Group on Idiopathic Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes. Furthermore, we compared the prognosis of AA patients with erythroid dysplasia with that of patients diagnosed in the same study with MDS presenting with single-lineage erythroid dysplasia (“MDS-SLED”). According to this study's definition, the criteria for excluding MDS are stringent, considering both bone marrow cellularity and megakaryocyte counts. Therefore, AA is not diagnosed when a decrease is not observed in the megakaryocyte count. Results: The study included a total of 32 cases of AA with erythroid dysplasia, 56 cases of AA without dysplasia, and 47 cases of MDS-SLED. The overall survival or leukemia-free survival showed no significant difference between AA patients with and without erythroid dysplasia (both p=0.14). Abstract

This study aims to generate test cases for scenario-based assessment of automated driving systems (ADS) when encounter a cut-out maneuver where the lead vehicle having changed lanes, revealing a new lead vehicle that, in some cases, is slower than the original lead (the cutting-out) vehicle. We extracted the cut-out scenarios from an established real-world traffic dataset recorded by instrumented vehicles on Japanese highways and then defined them using vehicle kinematic parameters (velocities and distances). The extracted scenarios were analyzed based on the direct correlation between every two consecutive vehicles: a rear part that describes the correlation between the following vehicle and the cutting-out vehicle; and a frontal part that describes the correlation between the cutting-out vehicle and the preceding vehicle. Parameter ranges were quantified with a regression model and determined based on the risk acceptance threshold applied in the field of Japanese high-speed trains and annual exposure by professional highway drivers to produce a scenario space with a reasonably foreseeable range in which ADS may not produce crashes lest it performs worse than human drivers. A multi-dimensional distribution analytical approach was used to derive a correlation between the following and preceding vehicles considering the initial longitudinal velocities. Results suggest that when the time headway between the following vehicle and the cutting-out vehicle is equal to or more than 2 s, there should not have collision risks between the following vehicle and the preceding vehicle. These findings can help to understand normative driver behavior during cut-out scenarios and to generate accident-free scenario space for which ADS must perform flawlessly.

Abstract

Verification and validation of automated driving systems’ safety are some of the biggest challenges for the introduction of automated vehicles into the market. Scenario-based safety assessment is an efficient and repeatable method to test the systems’ safety before their deployment in the real world. However, even with limited traffic situations identified as critical to the system behavior, there is still an open range of parameters to describe each situation. Thus, defining specific parameter ranges is crucial to realize the scenario-based safety assessment approach. This study proposes a method to parameterize scenarios extracted from real-world traffic data, analyze their distribution and correlation, and incorporate them into the definition of reasonably foreseeable parameter ranges through the contextualization of resulting ranges with reasonable risk acceptance thresholds from different fields and international environments. Representative values can be selected from these specific parameter ranges to extract specific concrete scenarios applicable for the systems safety assessment. The applicability of the proposed method is demonstrated using parameter ranges obtained to define two sets of 960 cut-in and 6,442 deceleration scenarios extracted from a new set of traffic data collected from Japanese highways under the SAKURA initiative. The outcomes will enable comparisons with traffic data from other countries and inform automated driving system developers, standardization bodies, and policymakers to develop automated vehicle safety assessments applicable internationally.

Abstract

Hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) has been utilized to study chemical state and kinetics of sulfur species in a rubber compound by examining thermally induced changes of S 1s core-level spectra. Two peaks at 2470 and 2472 eV together with the 2479 eV peak from SO42– are resolved in the S 1s spectrum. As the rubber compound is heated at 374, 412, and 440 K, the former two peaks show different thermal behaviors; the peak at 2472 eV is swiftly decreased in its intensity with heating time because of thermal desorption of the sulfur species, whereas the intensity of the 2470 eV peak shows a slight increase especially in the surface region of the rubber compound. On the basis of these thermal behaviors, the peaks at 2470 and 2472 eV are, respectively, associated with S atoms bonded directly to the C atoms and those bonded only to other S atoms. An Arrhenius plot analysis of the 2470 eV peak intensity variation reveals that the S–C bond formation and scission reactions compete with each other with a slightly smaller activation energy in the bond formation than in the bond scission.

Abstract

Coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron, γd→π0π0d, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from 0.75 to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section as a function of the γd center-of-mass energy shows resonance-like behavior, which peaks at approximately 2.47 and 2.63 GeV. The measured angular distribution of deuteron emission is rather flat, which cannot be reproduced by the kinematics of quasi-free π0π0 production with deuteron coalescence. In π0d invariant-mass distributions, a clear peak is observed at 2.14±0.01 GeV/c2 with a width of 0.09±0.01 GeV/c2. The spin-parity of this state is restricted to 1+, 2+ or 3− from the angular distributions of the two π0s. The present work shows strong evidence for the existence of an isovector dibaryon resonance with a mass of 2.14 GeV/c2. The 2+ assignment is consistent with the theoretically predicted D12 state, and also with the energy dependence of the πd partial-wave amplitude P23 for the π±d→π±d and π+d→pp reactions. Abstract

The total cross sections were measured for coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron at incident energies below 0.9 GeV for the first time. No clear resonance-like behavior is observed in the excitation function for Wγd=2.38–2.61 GeV, where the d⁎(2380) dibaryon resonance observed at COSY is expected to appear. The measured excitation function is consistent with the existing theoretical calculation for this reaction. The upper limit of the total cross section is found to be 0.034 μb for the dibaryon resonance at Wγd=2.37 GeV (90% confidence level) in the γd→π0π0d reaction.

Abstract

The irradiation hardening and microstructures of pure W and W–3%Re for up to 5.0 dpa by self-ion irradiation were investigated in this work. The ion irradiation was conducted using 18 MeV W6+ at 500 and 800°C. A focused ion beam followed by electro-polishing was used to make thin foil specimens for transmission electron microscope observations. Dislocation loops were observed in all the irradiated samples. Voids were observed in all of the specimens except the W–3%Re irradiated to 0.2 dpa. The hardness was measured by using nanoindentation. The irradiation hardening was saturated at 1.0 dpa for pure W. In the case of W–3%Re, the irradiation hardening showed a peak at 1.0 dpa. The correlation between the microstructure and hardening was investigated.

Abstract

Measurements of the cross sections are conducted for coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the d, gamma deutron to pi0 eta deutron, at the incident energy in the range of the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. A rapidly increasing trend below 1 GeV is observed in the total cross section. The data are effectively reproduced by theoretical calculations incorporating the meson-deutron final-state interactions. However, the measured deutron angular distribution d sigma/d Omegad in the center-of-mass frame (gamma d) is rather flat, and it differs significantly from the strong backward-peaking behavior expected in the kinematics of d formation after pi0 eta photoproduction on an initial bound nucleon. In addition, the d sigma/dMeta d differential cross section exhibits a prominent enhancement near the eta d threshold, while d sigma/dMpi d exhibits an enhancement near the known pi d resonance with I=1 and JP=2+. From these observations, we have concluded that two reaction sequences occur; gamma d to pi0 D01 to pi0 eta d and eta D12 to pi0 eta d, where DIJ denotes a state with a baryon number of 2, an isospin of I, and a spin of J. The enhancement corresponding to D01 is expected to be a theoretically predicted eta NN bound state with I=0 and JP=1- or a virtual state of eta d. It is found that attraction between eta d is certainly very strong.

Abstract

Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\eta{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $\pi^0 \eta$ photoproduction on the nucleon followed by deuteron coalescence. At the same time, the data are rather well reproduced by the calculations taking into account the final-state interaction. We have also measured for the first time the differential cross sections: the $\pi^0 \eta$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi \eta}$, the $\pi^0 d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi d}$, the $\eta d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$, and the distribution over the deuteron emission angle $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ in the overall center-of-mass frame. The measured cross section $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ does not exhibit strongly backward-peaking behavior predicted by the calculations. At all incident energies, an increase in $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$ near the $\eta d$ threshold is observed, which indicates a bound or virtual $\eta d$ state resulting from a strong attraction between $\eta$ and a deuteron. The possibilities of using coherent $\pi^0\eta$ photoproduction on a nucleus to study the $\eta$-nuclear interaction are also discussed., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

International audience; Experimental studies of the collisions of heavy nuclei at relativistic energies have established the properties of the quark–gluon plasma (QGP), a state of hot, dense nuclear matter in which quarks and gluons are not bound into hadrons1–4. In this state, matter behaves as a nearly inviscid fluid5 that efficiently translates initial spatial anisotropies into correlated momentum anisotropies among the particles produced, creating a common velocity field pattern known as collective flow. In recent years, comparable momentum anisotropies have been measured in small-system proton–proton (p+p) and proton–nucleus (p+A) collisions, despite expectations that the volume and lifetime of the medium produced would be too small to form a QGP. Here we report on the observation of elliptic and triangular flow patterns of charged particles produced in proton–gold (p+Au), deuteron–gold (d+Au) and helium–gold (3He+Au) collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt {s_{{\mathrm{NN}}}} = 200$ GeV. The unique combination of three distinct initial geometries and two flow patterns provides unprecedented model discrimination. Hydrodynamical models, which include the formation of a short-lived QGP droplet, provide the best simultaneous description of these measurements.

Abstract

We developed a CANDLES-III system to study the neutrino-less double beta (0$\nu\beta\beta$) decay of $^{48}$Ca. The proposed system employs 96 CaF$_{2}$ scintillation crystals (305 kg) with natural Ca ($^{\rm nat.}$Ca) isotope which corresponds 350\,g of $^{48}$Ca. External backgrounds were rejected using a 4$\pi$ active shield of a liquid scintillator surrounding the CaF$_2$ crystals. The internal backgrounds caused by the radioactive impurities within the CaF$_2$ crystals can be reduced effectively through analysis of the signal pulse shape. We analyzed the data obtained in the Kamioka underground for a live-time of 130.4\,days to evaluate the feasibility of the low background measurement with the CANDLES-III detector. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we estimated the background rate from the radioactive impurities in the CaF$_{2}$ crystals and the rate of high energy $\gamma$-rays caused by the (n, $\gamma$) reactions induced by environmental neutrons. The expected background rate was in a good agreement with the measured rate, i.e., approximately 10$^{-3}$ events/keV/yr/(kg of $^{\rm nat.}$Ca), in the 0$\nu\beta\beta$ window. In conclusion, the background candidates were estimated properly by comparing the measured energy spectrum with the background simulations. With this measurement method, we performed the first search for 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay in a low background condition using a detector with a Ca isotope, in which the Ca present was not enriched, in a scale of hundreds of kg. The $^{48}$Ca isotope has a high potential for use in 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay search, and is expected to be useful for the development of a next-generation detector for highly sensitive measurements.

Abstract

Studying spin-momentum correlations in hadronic collisions offers a glimpse into a three-dimensional picture of proton structure. The transverse single-spin asymmetry for midrapidity isolated direct photons in p^{↑}+p collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Because direct photons in particular are produced from the hard scattering and do not interact via the strong force, this measurement is a clean probe of initial-state spin-momentum correlations inside the proton and is in particular sensitive to gluon interference effects within the proton. This is the first time direct photons have been used as a probe of spin-momentum correlations at RHIC. The uncertainties on the results are a 50-fold improvement with respect to those of the one prior measurement for the same observable, from the Fermilab E704 experiment. These results constrain gluon spin-momentum correlations in transversely polarized protons.

Abstract

We have constructed a new laser-Compton-scattering facility, called the LEPS2 beamline, at the 8-GeV electron storage ring, SPring-8. This facility provides a linearly polarized photon beam in a tagged energy range of 1.3--2.4 GeV. Thanks to a small divergence of the low-emittance storage-ring electrons, the tagged photon beam has a size (sigma) suppressed to about 4 mm even after it travels about 130 m to the experimental building that is independent of the storage ring building and contains large detector systems. This beamline is designed to achieve a photon beam intensity higher than that of the first laser-Compton-scattering beamline at SPring-8 by adopting the simultaneous injection of up to four high-power laser beams and increasing a transmittance for the long photon-beam path up to about 77%. The new beamline is under operation for hadron photoproduction experiments.

The cross section of bottom quark-antiquark ($b\bar{b}$) production in $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The results are based on the yield of high mass, like-sign muon pairs measured within the PHENIX muon arm acceptance ($1.2 1$ GeV/$c$, and dimuon mass of 5--10 GeV/$c^2$. The extrapolated total cross section at this energy for $b\bar{b}$ production is $13.1 \pm 0.6~(\mbox{stat}) \pm 1.5~(\mbox{syst}) \pm 2.7~(\mbox{global})~\mu$b. The total cross section is compared to a perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculation and is consistent within uncertainties. The azimuthal opening angle between muon pairs from $b\bar{b}$ decays and their $p_T$ distributions are compared to distributions generated using {\sc ps pythia 6}, which includes next-to-leading order processes. The azimuthal correlations and pair $p_T$ distribution are not very well described by {\sc pythia} calculations, but are still consistent within uncertainties. Flavor creation and flavor excitation subprocesses are favored over gluon splitting.

Abstract

The PHENIX experiment has measured the spin alignment for inclusive J/ψ→e+e- decays in proton-proton collisions at s=510 GeV at midrapidity. The angular distributions have been measured in three different polarization frames, and the three decay angular coefficients have been extracted in a full two-dimensional analysis. Previously, PHENIX saw large longitudinal net polarization at forward rapidity at the same collision energy. This analysis at midrapidity, complementary to the previous PHENIX results, sees no sizable polarization in the measured transverse momentum range of 0.0

Abstract

Charmonium is a valuable probe in heavy-ion collisions to study the properties of the quark gluon plasma, and is also an interesting probe in small collision systems to study cold nuclear matter effects, which are also present in large collision systems. With the recent observations of collective behavior of produced particles in small system collisions, measurements of the modification of charmonium in small systems have become increasingly relevant. We present the results of J/ψ measurements at forward and backward rapidity in various small collision systems, p+p, p+Al, p+Au, and He3+Au, at sNN=200 GeV. The results are presented in the form of the observable RAB, the nuclear modification factor, a measure of the ratio of the J/ψ invariant yield compared to the scaled yield in p+p collisions. We examine the rapidity, transverse momentum, and collision centrality dependence of nuclear effects on J/ψ production with different projectile sizes p and He3, and different target sizes Al and Au. The modification is found to be strongly dependent on the target size, but to be very similar for p+Au and He3+Au. However, for 0%–20% central collisions at backward rapidity, the modification factor for He3+Au is found to be smaller than that for p+Au, with a mean fit to the ratio of 0.89±0.03(stat)±0.08(syst), possibly indicating final state effects due to the larger projectile size.

Abstract

We measured missing mass spectrum of the ^{12}C(γ,p) reaction for the first time in coincidence with potential decay products from η^{'} bound nuclei. We tagged an (η+p) pair associated with the η^{'}N→ηN process in a nucleus. After applying kinematical selections to reduce backgrounds, no signal events were observed in the bound-state region. An upper limit of the signal cross section in the opening angle cosθ_{lab}^{ηp}-0.9 was obtained to be 2.2 nb/sr at the 90% confidence level. It is compared with theoretical cross sections, whose normalization ambiguity is suppressed by measuring a quasifree η^{'} production rate. Our results indicate a small branching fraction of the η^{'}N→ηN process and/or a shallow η^{'}-nucleus potential.

Abstract

We present a photometric stereo method that requires only a single color image. Conventional color photometric stereo methods for single color images cannot deal with multi-colored surfaces, since a color observation at a surface point is insufficient for determining the reflectances and the surface normal at that point. We exploit the global information of surface color and geometry by introducing a surface-color feature that enables classification of a surface into regions of the same color and simultaneously estimate surface normals. The surface-color feature, being invariant in geometry, qualifies the spatial distribution of the square norm of RGB reflectances and attributes surface points of a reflectance norm to the correct color. We discuss the theoretical validity of our surface classification and present a practical algorithm for multi-colored surface recovery. Although some classification ambiguities remain in principle, we show that they can be resolved under a smoothness constraint on the surface geometry. We evaluated the accuracy of our method through simulations and we demonstrated its effectiveness on real scenes.

Abstract

The electronic structure of Fe2P( 10 1 ¯ 0 ) has been investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The surface prepared by cycles of Ar+ ion sputtering and annealing at 500–800 °C showed a c(2 × 2) low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) pattern. An Fe 3d–P 3p hybrid band (main band) and a satellite were observed at 0–4 eV and 5–8 eV, respectively, in PES spectra of c(2 × 2) Fe2P( 10 1 ¯ 0 ). The main band showed a clear cut-off at the Fermi edge, indicating the metallic nature of Fe2P. The satellite intensity showed a resonant maximum around the Fe 3p threshold, suggesting that the satellite is caused through a shake-up process. Three types of surface-shifted components were found in P 2p PES spectra. All the P 2p peaks have symmetric line shapes, while the Fe 2p PES and Fe L-edge XAS spectra have asymmetric line shapes, suggesting that the electronic states around the Fermi level are mostly composed of Fe 3d components. These results suggest that the stabilization of the electronic structure at metal sites through the bonding with P atoms is ineffective on Fe2P( 10 1 ¯ 0 ), as in the case of Fe2P(0001).

Abstract

We present a single-capture photometric stereo method using a hyperspectral camera. A spectrally and spatially designed illumination enables a point-wise estimation of reflectance spectra and surface normals from a single hyperspectral image. The illumination works as a reflectance probe in wide spectral regions where reflectance spectra are measured, and the full spectra are estimated by interpolation. It also works as the resource for shadings in other spectral regions. The accuracy of estimation is evaluated in a simulation. Also, we prepare an experimental setup and demonstrate a surface reconstruction against a real scene.

Abstract

Reflection characteristics of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) by a rectangular ridge on the silver surface were examined theoretically and experimentally. The amplitude and phase shift of the SPP reflection by the rectangular ridge were calculated by SPP scattering theory using Green's tensor method and expressed in terms of ridge width and SPP energy. It was found that this calculation result can be reproduced well by a simple model expressed by superposition of reflections by the two steps constituting the ridge. A one-dimensional cavity composed of a pair of rectangular ridges was fabricated, and the characteristics of the SPP standing wave mode (cavity mode) was clarified for the first time using the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) - cathodoluminescence (CL) method and was used to evaluate the theoretical calculations of the reflection coefficient. The cavity mode energies are derived from the angle-resolved spectral (ARS) pattern, and the phase shift of the SPP reflection can be deduced through the cavity condition. We successfully explained the resonance energy of the cavity mode and the spatial distribution of the SPP standing wave by using the SPP reflection coefficient of the rectangular ridge derived by the theory.

Abstract

Critical condition of a bow-shock instability was experimentally investigated for a low specific heat ratio flow in a ballistic range with different gas species and Mach numbers. Unstable shock surfaces were observed in front of an edged blunt body by shadowgraph images as predicted in advance by numerical simulations, and a disturbed flow appeared in the downstream even if the flow condition was close to the critical one. A numerically predicted critical curve in a parameter space of specific heat ratio and Mach number indicated that the instability can be found in a low specific heat ratio and high Mach number flow, being consistent with the present experiments. The density ratio of 10.5 across the shock front is similar to the critical curve; therefore, larger one may be an ingredient to make a bow-shock wave unstable.

Abstract

We have studied the neutrino-less double beta decay(0νββ) of 48Ca with the CANDLES III system, which consists of CaF2(pure) scintillators. Rejection analyses for background events from radioactive contaminations in the CaF2(pure) scintillators were effective to reduce backgrounds in Qββ -value region. As the results, no events were observed in the region for the data of 131 days × 86 kg. It gave a lower limit 6.2 × 1022 year (90 % C.L.) for the half-life of 0νββ of 48Ca. For higher sensitive measurement of 48Ca 0νββ, we have developed new techniques for 48Ca enrichment and CaF2 scintillating bolometer. In this paper, we will also show current status of these techniques.

Abstract

We constructed a hadron blind detector (HBD) using a finely segmented pad readout. The finely segmented pad readout enabled us to adopt an advanced particle identification method which applies a threshold to the number of pad hits in addition to the total amount of collected charge. The responses of the detector to electrons and pions were evaluated using a negatively charged secondary beam at 1.0 GeV/c containing 20% electrons at the J-PARC K1.1BR beam line. We observed 7.3 photoelectrons per incident electron. Using the advanced particle identification method, an electron detection efficiency of 83% was achieved with a pion rejection factor of 120. The method improved the pion rejection by approximately a factor of five, compared to the one which just applies a threshold to the amount of collected charge. The newly introduced finely segmented pad readout was found to be effective in rejecting pions.

Abstract

CANDLES(CAlcium fluoride for the study of Neutrinos and Dark matters by Low Energy Spectrometer) is the experiment to search for the neutrino-less double beta decay(0vββ) of 48Ca with CaF2 scintillator. 48Ca has the highest Q ββ -value (4.3 MeV) among all isotope candidates for 0vββ. It enables us to measure signals with very low background condition. After rejection analysis with 131 days × 86 kg data for background events from radioactive contaminations in the CaF2 scintillators, no events are observed in the Q ββ -value region. As a result, the half-life of 48Ca is greater than 6.2 × 1022 yr (90% confidence level). For further high sensitive measurement of 48Ca 0vββ search, we have been developing the 48Ca enrichment and CaF2 scintillating bolometer techniques. In this paper, the latest result for CANDLES and the status of scintillating bolometer development are described.

Abstract

We have measured the cross section and single-spin asymmetries from forward W±→μ±ν production in longitudinally polarized p+p collisions at s=510 GeV using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The cross sections are consistent with previous measurements at this collision energy, while the most forward and backward longitudinal single spin asymmetries provide new insights into the sea quark helicities in the proton. The charge of the W bosons provides a natural flavor separation of the participating partons. © 2018 authors. Published by the American Physical Society.

Abstract

Asymmetric nuclear collisions of $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV provide an excellent laboratory for understanding particle production, as well as exploring interactions among these particles after their initial creation in the collision. We present measurements of charged hadron production $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$ in all such collision systems over a broad pseudorapidity range and as a function of collision multiplicity. A simple wounded quark model is remarkably successful at describing the full data set. We also measure the elliptic flow $v_{2}$ over a similarly broad pseudorapidity range. Abstract

Depression is a common debilitating human disease whose etiology has defied decades of research. A critical bottleneck is the difficulty in modeling depressive episodes in animals. Here, we show that a transgenic mouse with chronic forebrain expression of a dominant negative mutant of Polg1, a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) polymerase, exhibits lethargic behavioral changes, which are associated with emotional, vegetative and psychomotor disturbances, and response to antidepression drug treatment. The results suggested a symptomatic similarity between the lethargic behavioral change that was recurrently and spontaneously experienced by the mutant mice and major depressive episode as defined by DSM-5. A comprehensive screen of mutant brain revealed a hotspot for mtDNA deletions and mitochondrial dysfunction in the paraventricular thalamic nucleus (PVT) with similar defects observed in postmortem brains of patients with mitochondrial disease with mood symptoms. Remarkably, the genetic inhibition of PVT synaptic output by Cre-loxP-dependent expression of tetanus toxin triggered de novo depression-like episodes. These findings identify a novel preclinical mouse model and brain area for major depressive episodes with mitochondrial dysfunction as its cellular mechanism.

Abstract

Recently, multiparticle-correlation measurements of relativistic p/d/^{3}He+Au, p+Pb, and even p+p collisions show surprising collective signatures. Here, we present beam-energy-scan measurements of two-, four-, and six-particle angular correlations in d+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200, 62.4, 39, and 19.6 GeV. We also present measurements of two- and four-particle angular correlations in p+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. We find the four-particle cumulant to be real valued for d+Au collisions at all four energies. We also find that the four-particle cumulant in p+Au has the opposite sign as that in d+Au. Further, we find that the six-particle cumulant agrees with the four-particle cumulant in d+Au collisions at 200 GeV, indicating that nonflow effects are subdominant. These observations provide strong evidence that the correlations originate from the initial geometric configuration, which is then translated into the momentum distribution for all particles, commonly referred to as collectivity.
