Abstract

The calcium isotopes are an ideal system to investigate the evolution of shell structure and magic numbers. Although the properties of surface nucleons in calcium have been well studied, probing the structure of deeply bound nucleons remains a challenge. Here, we report on the first measurement of unbound states in 53Ca and 55Ca, populated from 54,56Ca(p,pn) reactions at a beam energy of around 216 MeV/nucleon at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotopes Beam Factory. The resonance properties, partial cross sections, and momentum distributions of these unbound states were analyzed. Orbital angular momentum l assignments were extracted from momentum distributions based on calculations using the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) reaction model. The resonances at excitation energies of 5516(41)keV in 53Ca and 6000(250)keV in 55Ca indicate a significant l =3 component, providing the first experimental evidence for the ν0f7/2 single-particle strength of unbound hole states in the neutron-rich Ca isotopes. The observed excitation energies and cross-sections point towards extremely localized and well separated strength distributions, with some fragmentation for the ν0f7/2 orbital in 55Ca. These results are in good agreement with predictions from shell-model calculations using the effective GXPF1Bs interaction and ab initio calculations and diverge markedly from the experimental distributions in the nickel isotones at Z=28.

Abstract

The nuclear structure of 66Se, nucleus beyond the N=Z line on the proton-rich side of the valley of stability, was investigated by the neutron knock-out reaction 67Se(12C,X)66Se using a 12C target. The analysis of the singles spectrum of the γ-rays emitted during the de-excitation of the populated low-lying excited states revealed two previously detected (927(4) keV, 1460(32) keV) and three new (744(6) keV, 1210(17) keV, 1661(23) keV) transitions. The 744-keV, the 1210-keV, and the 1460-keV transitions were found to be in coincidence with the one at 927 keV. The spectrum coincident with the 927-keV transition showed a further possible transition at 299(35) keV, which was obscured by significant atomic background in the singles spectrum. This transition might correspond to a peak previously reported at 273(5) keV that could not be assigned to 66Se unambiguously. Based on a comparison of the experimental data to theoretical calculations, four new excited states are proposed which suggest that 66Se exhibits shape coexistence.

Abstract

Detailed γ-ray spectroscopy of the exotic neon isotope 28Ne has been performed for the first time using the one-neutron removal reaction from 29Ne on a liquid hydrogen target at 240 MeV/nucleon. Based on an analysis of parallel momentum distributions, a level scheme with spin-parity assignments has been constructed for 28Ne and the negative-parity states are identified for the first time. The measured partial cross sections and momentum distributions reveal a significant intruder p-wave strength providing evidence of the breakdown of the N=20 and N=28 shell gaps. Only a weak, possible f-wave strength was observed to bound final states. Large-scale shell-model calculations with different effective interactions do not reproduce the large p-wave and small f-wave strength observed experimentally, indicating an ongoing challenge for a complete theoretical description of the transition into the island of inversion along the Ne isotopic chain.

Abstract

Laser optics have long been used in pollen counting systems. To clarify the limitations and potential new applications of laser optics for automatic pollen counting and discrimination, we determined the light scattering patterns of various pollen types, tracked temporal changes in these distributions, and introduced a new theory for automatic pollen discrimination. Our experimental results indicate that different pollen types often have different light scattering characteristics, as previous research has suggested. Our results also show that light scattering distributions did not undergo significant temporal changes. Further, we show that the concentration of two different types of pollen could be estimated separately from the total number of pollen grains by fitting the light scattering data to a probability density curve. These findings should help realize a fast and simple automatic pollen monitoring system.

Abstract

The triple alpha reaction is one of the most important reactions in the nuclear astrophysics. However, its reaction rate in high temperature environments at T9> 2 was still uncertain. One of the major origins of the uncertainty was that the radiative-decay probability of the 31− state in 12C was unknown. In the present work, we have determined the radiative-decay probability of the 31− state to be 1.3−1.1+1.2×10−6 by measuring the 1H(12C,12Cp) reaction for the first time, and derived the triple alpha reaction rate in high temperature environments from the measured radiative-decay probability. The present result suggests that the 31− state noticeably enhances the triple alpha reaction rate although the contribution from the 31− state had been assumed to be small.

Abstract

Spin–isospin excitations in Nb100 were studied via the Mo100(t,He3) charge-exchange reaction at 115 MeV/u with the goal to constrain theoretical models used to describe the isovector spin response of nuclei. The experiment was performed with a secondary beam of tritons, and 3He particles were analyzed in the S800 magnetic spectrometer. Decay by neutron emission from excited states in Nb100 was observed by using plastic and liquid scintillator arrays. Differential cross sections were analyzed and monopole excitations were revealed by using a multipole decomposition analysis. The Gamow–Teller transition strength observed at low excitation energies, which is important for estimating the electron-capture rate in astrophysical scenarios, was strongly fragmented and reduced compared to single-particle and spherical mean-field models. The consideration of deformation in the theoretical estimates was found to be important to better describe the fragmentation and strengths. A strong excitation of the isovector spin giant monopole resonance was observed, and well reproduced by the mean-field models. Its presence makes the extraction of Gamow–Teller strengths at high excitation energies difficult. The branches for statistical and direct decay by neutron emission were identified in the spectra. The upper limit for the branching ratio by direct decay (integrated over all observed excitations) was determined to be 20±6%. Even though the statistical uncertainties in the neutron-coincident data were too large to perform detailed studies of the decay by neutron emission from individual states and resonances, the experiment demonstrates the feasibility of the method.

9. Quantitative flow diagnostics of shock trains by rainbow schlieren deflectometry

Abstract

A new measurement technique to reconstruct the density field of the shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction (SWBLI) in a confined duct is proposed. With this technique, it is possible to quantitatively capture in detail the structures of the density field both in the regions of the shock-systems in the central core and boundary-layer flows near the duct wall concurrently. The novel feature of the proposed technique is to make use of the schlieren images with the rainbow filters of the vertical and horizontal cutoff settings and then to reconstruct the two-dimensional density field integrated over the line-of-sight direction using the corresponding filter calibration curves. The proposed technique is applied for the first time to a shock train in a constant-area straight duct under the upstream condition of the shock train: the freestream Mach number is 1.42, the incoming boundary layer thickness normalised by the duct half height is 0.175, and the corresponding unit Reynolds number $Re/m$ is $2.99 \times 10^7$ m-1. The calculated isopycnic field depicts the streamwise and transverse density variations inside the shock train, the mixing region after the shock train, and the boundary-layer of the interaction region. This technique is shown to be capable of identifying the locations of shocks in a shock train more precisely than a conventional approach measuring the static pressure distribution along the duct wall. In addition, various quantitative visual representations such as a shadowgraphy and a bright-field schlieren can be extracted from the density field acquired by the present approach, and the spatial evolution of the shape and strength of each shock constituting the shock train as well as the boundary layer flow properties can be quantitatively clarified.

Abstract

We performed the experiment of p–$^{3}$He scattering at 65 MeV by using polarized proton beams and the newly constructed polarized $^{3}$He target. The proton analyzing power $A_{y}$, the 3He analyzing power $A^{T}_{y}$, and the spin correlation coefficient $C_{yy}$ were measured. In the conference, the experimental data were compared with the rigorous numerical calculations based on various nuclear potentials. Large discrepancies between the experimental data and the calculations were found in the $A^{T}_{y}$ and the $C_{yy}$ at the backward angles.

Abstract

Proton–3He scattering is one of the good probes to study the T = 3/2 channel of three– nucleon forces. We have measured 3He analyzing powers for p−3He elastic scattering with the polarized 3He target at 70 and 100 MeV. In the conference the data were com- pared with the theoretical predictions based on the modern nucleon–nucleon potentials. Large discrepancies were found between the data and the calculations at the angles where the 3He analyzing power takes the minimum and maximum values.

Abstract

We measured the cross section and the proton analyzing power Ay for p–3He elastic scattering at the angles θ = 26.9◦–170.1◦ in the center of mass system with a 65 MeV polarized proton beam. We compared the data with the rigorous numerical calculations based on the various nucleon–nucleon potentials. For the cross section, clear discrepancy is seen at the angles where the cross section takes minimum. For the proton analyzing power Ay, the calculations have moderate agreements to the data. In this proceedings, we show only the experimental results.

Populated states of ^{54}Ca were investigated through γ-ray and invariant-mass spectroscopy. Level energies were calculated from the nuclear shell model employing a phenomenological internucleon interaction. Theoretical cross sections to states were calculated from distorted-wave impulse approximation estimates multiplied by the shell model spectroscopic factors, which describe the wave function overlap of the ^{55}Sc ground state with states in ^{54}Ca. Despite the calculations showing a significant amplitude of excited neutron configurations in the ground-state of ^{55}Sc, valence proton removals populated predominantly the ground state of ^{54}Ca. This counterintuitive result is attributed to pairing effects leading to a dominance of the ground-state spectroscopic factor. Owing to the ubiquity of the pairing interaction, this argument should be generally applicable to direct knockout reactions from odd-even to even-even nuclei.

Abstract

A high position resolution neutron detector for time-of-flight measurements is being developed to measure the ( p , p n ) reaction in inverse kinematics with an excitation energy resolution of 1 MeV at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. In this study, a new method based on the segmentation of the neutron detector part is employed to achieve a position resolution on the order of mm with a prototype neutron detector. The prototype detector consists of 8 × 8 scintillating fibers, two multi-anode photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and two light guides. The scintillating fibers have a cross sectional area of 3 . 75 × 3 . 75 mm 2 . The prototype’s performance is studied using the neutron and proton beams provided at the Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center (CYRIC), Tohoku University and the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka University. It is confirmed that the hit pattern analysis correctly recognizes the neutron detection position within the fiber size of 3.75 mm. The obtained TOF resolution of 350 ps (FWHM), lateral position resolution of 2.5 mm (FWHM), and longitudinal position resolution of 50–60 mm (FWHM) satisfy the requirements to achieve an excitation energy resolution of 1 MeV. The typical detection efficiency is ∼ 2.0% for a neutron with a kinetic energy of 50–200 MeV. The detailed investigation of the detection efficiency in conjunction with the neutron hit position reveals the existence of the non-uniformity of the efficiency. It is shown that the non-uniformity can be mitigated by reducing the threshold level, and by increasing the detector size. For a larger neutron detector, based on the design of the prototype detector, the non-uniformity will thus be negligible.

Abstract

Background High lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels are a risk factor for peripheral artery disease (PAD). However, the association between Lp(a) levels and angiographic severity of PAD has not been systematically studied. Purpose The aim of this study was to assess the impact of Lp(a) levels on angiographic severity of femoropopliteal lesions in patients with PAD. Methods We retrospectively analyzed a single-center database including 108 patients (74±8 years, 69% male) who underwent endovascular therapy for de novo femoropopliteal lesions and measured Lp(a) levels before therapy between June 2016 and September 2019. Abstract

Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-unbound nucleus 28 F has been performed for the first time following proton/neutron removal from 29 Ne / 29 F beams at energies around 230 MeV / nucleon . The invariant-mass spectra were reconstructed for both the 27 F ( * ) + n and 26 F ( * ) + 2 n coincidences and revealed a series of well-defined resonances. A near-threshold state was observed in both reactions and is identified as the 28 F ground state, with S n ( 28 F ) = − 199 ( 6 ) keV , while analysis of the 2 n decay channel allowed a considerably improved S n ( 27 F ) = 1620 ( 60 ) keV to be deduced. Comparison with shell-model predictions and eikonal-model reaction calculations have allowed spin-parity assignments to be proposed for some of the lower-lying levels of 28 F . Importantly, in the case of the ground state, the reconstructed 27 F + n momentum distribution following neutron removal from 29 F indicates that it arises mainly from the 1 p 3 / 2 neutron intruder configuration. This demonstrates that the island of inversion around N = 20 includes 28 F , and most probably 29 F , and suggests that 28 O is not doubly magic.

Abstract

Spin–isospin excitations in Nb 100 were studied via the Mo 100 ( t , He 3 ) charge-exchange reaction at 115 MeV/u with the goal to constrain theoretical models used to describe the isovector spin response of nuclei. The experiment was performed with a secondary beam of tritons, and 3He particles were analyzed in the S800 magnetic spectrometer. Decay by neutron emission from excited states in Nb 100 was observed by using plastic and liquid scintillator arrays. Differential cross sections were analyzed and monopole excitations were revealed by using a multipole decomposition analysis. The Gamow–Teller transition strength observed at low excitation energies, which is important for estimating the electron-capture rate in astrophysical scenarios, was strongly fragmented and reduced compared to single-particle and spherical mean-field models. The consideration of deformation in the theoretical estimates was found to be important to better describe the fragmentation and strengths. A strong excitation of the isovector spin giant monopole resonance was observed, and well reproduced by the mean-field models. Its presence makes the extraction of Gamow–Teller strengths at high excitation energies difficult. The branches for statistical and direct decay by neutron emission were identified in the spectra. The upper limit for the branching ratio by direct decay (integrated over all observed excitations) was determined to be 20 ± 6 % . Even though the statistical uncertainties in the neutron-coincident data were too large to perform detailed studies of the decay by neutron emission from individual states and resonances, the experiment demonstrates the feasibility of the method.

Abstract

Background Left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction and heart failure (HF) in patients with lower extremity artery disease (LEAD) is associated with an increased risk for adverse events. However, relationship between long-term outcome in patient with LEAD and LV diastolic dysfunction remains unclear. Purpose The aim of this study was to assess the impact of LV diastolic dysfunction on long-term outcome in patients with LEAD. Methods Two hundred patients (male 66%, mean age 76±9 years) with preserved LV systolic function assessed by echocardiography (ejection fraction ≥50%) were enrolled from a single-center database between January 2013 to May 2015. Baseline LEAD was identified by ABI Results LV diastolic dysfunction was identified in 31%. The mean observation period was 32±21 months. The primary endpoint occurred more frequently in patients with LV diastolic dysfunction than those without at 3 years (30% vs 16%, P=0.02). There were no significant differences between 2 groups in the myocardial infarction (3% vs 3%, P=0.73) and stroke (3% vs 3%, P=0.55). Cardiovascular death (19% vs 7%, P=0.01) and hospitalization for HF (19% vs 7%, P=0.01) were significantly higher in patients with LV diastolic dysfunction. Abstract

Background Presence of severe stenosis in non-infarct related arteries, i.e. multi-vessel disease (MVD), is associated with poor outcomes after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, impact of mild to moderate stenosis in non-culprit lesions remains unclear.Gensini score is an angiographic application grading the extent of coronary artery lesions including mild to moderate stenosis. Purpose To evaluate whether the extent of non-culprit lesion is related to one-year outcomes after AMI. Methods This study consisted of consecutive 168 patients who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) for AMI between 2015 and 2017. Patients with coronary bypass grafts were excluded from the analysis. To assess the extent of non-culprit lesions, we used “non-culprit Gensini score”, which is calculated by excluding score of the culprit lesion from the original Gensini score. Patients were divided into 2 groups by the median ofnon-culprit Gensini score: low score (0–14, n=84) and high score (>15, n=84). Major adverse cardiac events (MACE) included all cause of deaths, non-fatal MI, stroke and ischemia driven coronary revascularization during one-year follow-up period. Abstract

We present a precise measurement of the cross section, proton and 3He analyzing powers, and spin correlation coefficient Cy,y for the p-3He elastic scattering near 65 MeV, and comparison with rigorous four-nucleon scattering calculations based on realistic nuclear potentials and a model with Δ-isobar excitation. Clear discrepancies are seen in some of the measured observables in the regime around the cross section minimum. Theoretical predictions using scaling relations between the calculated cross section and the 3He binding energy are not successful in reproducing the data. Large sensitivity to the NN potentials and rather small Δ-isobar effects in the calculated cross section are noticed as different features from those in the deuteron-proton elastic scattering. The results obtained above indicate that p-3He scattering at intermediate energies is an excellent tool to explore the nuclear interactions not accessible by the three-nucleon scattering.

Abstract

The (^{12}N, ^{12}C) charge-exchange reaction at 175 MeV/u was developed as a novel probe for studying the isovector spin giant monopole resonance (IVSMR), whose properties are important for better understanding the bulk properties of nuclei and asymmetric nuclear matter. This probe, now available through the production of ^{12}N as a secondary rare-isotope beam, is exothermic, is strongly absorbed at the surface of the target nucleus, and provides selectivity for spin-transfer excitations. All three properties enhance the excitation of the IVSMR compared to other, primarily light-ion, probes, which have been used to study the IVSMR thus far. The ^{90}Zr(^{12}N,^{12}C) reaction was measured and the excitation energy spectra up to about 70 MeV for both the spin-transfer and non-spin-transfer channels were deduced separately by tagging the decay by γ emission from the ^{12}C ejectile. Besides the well-known Gamow-Teller and isobaric analog transitions, a clear signature of the IVSMR was identified. By comparing with the results from light-ion reactions on the same target nucleus and theoretical predictions, the suitability of this new probe for studying the IVSMR was confirmed.

Abstract

We observed the atomic 1s and 2p states of π^{-} bound to ^{121}Sn nuclei as distinct peak structures in the missing mass spectra of the ^{122}Sn(d,^{3}He) nuclear reaction. A very intense deuteron beam and a spectrometer with a large angular acceptance let us achieve a potential of discovery, which includes the capability of determining the angle-dependent cross sections with high statistics. The 2p state in a Sn nucleus was observed for the first time. The binding energies and widths of the pionic states are determined and found to be consistent with previous experimental results of other Sn isotopes. The spectrum is measured at finite reaction angles for the first time. The formation cross sections at the reaction angles between 0° and 2° are determined. The observed reaction-angle dependence of each state is reproduced by theoretical calculations. However, the quantitative comparison with our high-precision data reveals a significant discrepancy between the measured and calculated formation cross sections of the pionic 1s state.

Abstract

Neutron-proton pairing correlations are investigated in detail via $np$ transfer reactions in $N=Z\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}sd$-shell nuclei. In particular, we study the cross-section ratio of the lowest ${0}^{+}$ and ${1}^{+}$ states as an observable to quantify the interplay between $T=0$ (isoscalar) and $T=1$ (isovector) pairing strengths. The experimental results are compared to second-order distorted-wave Born approximation calculations with proton-neutron amplitudes obtained in the shell-model formalism using the universal $sd$-shell interaction B. Our results suggest underestimation of the nonneglible isoscalar pairing strength in the shell-model descriptions at the expense of the isovector channel.

Abstract

The γ-ray tracking array GRETINA was coupled to the S800 magnetic spectrometer for spectroscopy with fast beams of rare isotopes at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory on the campus of Michigan State University. We describe the technical details of this powerful setup and report on GRETINA's performance achieved with source and in-beam measurements. The γ-ray multiplicity encountered in experiments with fast beams is usually low, allowing for a simplified and efficient treatment of the data in the γ-ray analysis in terms of Doppler reconstruction and spectral quality. The results reported in this work were obtained from GRETINA consisting of 8 detector modules hosting four high-purity germanium crystals each. Currently, GRETINA consists of 10 detector modules.

Abstract

Low-pressure multi-wire drift chambers have been developed to track high-intensity radioactive isotope beams at the energies of around 200 MeV/nucleon. In order to minimize the effect of multiple scattering by radioactive isotope beam, the thickness of the detectors were minimized by using isobutane gas at low pressure (10 kPa). The performance of the position resolution, the tracking efficiency, and the beam intensity capability were evaluated as a function of atomic number and applied voltage. As a result, an overall position resolution of 300 μm was achieved for radioactive isotope beams with an intensity of 1 MHz. The details of the design specifications and performances of the low-pressure multi-wire drift chambers are described.

We are presently working on a new project ‘pionic atom factory project’ at RIBF. The project aims at precision spectroscopy of the energy spectrum of the pionic atom for a wide range of elements, using missing-mass spectroscopy of the (d,3Hed,3He) reaction near the π-π- emission threshold. For this project, we developed a new ion optics for BigRIPS using the dispersion-matching method. Abstract

The SHARAQ spectrometer and High-Resolution Beamline, which began operation in March 2009, have been put into use for six experiments using charge exchange reactions with radioactive isotope beams. For experiments at SHARAQ, detector developments and ion optics studies continue to improve performance in high-resolution nuclear spectroscopy. We have introduced improved timing resolution with CVD diamond detectors, high count-rate beamline tracking detectors and development of multi-particle detection by cathode-readout drift chambers. Ion-optics studies for the high-resolution achromatic (HA) and dispersion-matching (DM) transport modes are also reported here. Momentum tagging in the HA mode demonstrated an improvement in spectroscopic resolution with respect to the momentum spread of the radioactive beam. For the DM transportation mode, a momentum resolution of 1 / 8100 (FWHM) was achieved by taking into account the positions and angles of the beam at the third focal plane of BigRIPS.

Abstract

The triple α reaction rate in stars is quite important in many astrophysical scenarios including the stellar evolution and carbon synthesis in stars. Recently the non-resonant triple α reaction rate has been reevaluated using a calculation with the continuum-discretized coupled-channels (CDCC) method, which dramatically increased the rate at low temperature compared to the widely-used NACRE compilation. Since the enhancement influences strongly on astrophysical model simulations, we have planned an experiment for drawing conclusion on the non-resonant triple α reaction rate at low temperature by measuring the three-α continuum state in 12C. We report the present situation of the experiment.

Abstract

We have measured all deuteron analyzing powers \({(A_{y}^{d}, A_{yy}, A_{xx}, A_{xz})}\) for deuteron-proton elastic scattering at 294 MeV/nucleon in order to study the properties of three nucleon forces (3 NFs). Measurement was made at in an angular range of \({\theta_{{\rm c.m.}} = 35.6^{\circ} - 163.0^{\circ}}\). Obtained data were compared with Faddeev calculations with and without the 3 NFs. At \({\theta_{{\rm c.m.}}\lesssim 120^{\circ}}\) all the data have general agreement with the calculations, while the measured data at \({\theta_{{\rm c.m.}} \gtrsim 120^{\circ}}\) are not explained by any theoretical calculations. These results were consistent with those at 250 MeV/nucleon.

Abstract

Tensor correlations in 4He were studied via the (p, dp) reaction at the incident energy of 392 MeV with a focus on spin configurations of correlated pn pairs in 4He at high relative momenta \({(P_{\rm rel}^{\rm cor})}\). The preliminary results show that the correlated pn pair at \({P_{\rm rel}^{\rm cor} = 310 {\rm MeV/c}}\) predominantly has the channel spin S = 1, which is consistent with the characteristics of tensor correlations.

Abstract

Spectroscopy for neutron-rich nuclei 9He and 12Be has been performed by means of heavy-ion double charge exchange (HIDCX) (18O, 18Ne) reaction on stable target nuclei 9Be and 12C, respectively. Several clear peaks in 12Be at low excitation energy region even above neutron separation energy have been observed in one-shot measurement, whereas no prominent signals of 9He have been observed owing to the small cross section. It is shown that the HIDCX reaction is a new powerful spectroscopic tool for study of unstable neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract

We conducted an inclusive missing-mass spectroscopy of 122Sn (d, 3He) reaction near the π¯ emission threshold at an incident energy of T d = 250 MeV/nucleon. The experiment sets its goals to the research and development of the high precision spectroscopy of pionic atoms at the RI beam factory (RIBF) of RIKEN, which precedes a new project, pionic atom factory project (piAF), to observe pionic atoms systematically. Here, we report the preliminary results of the pilot experiment.

Abstract

The gamma strength function and level density of 1- states in 96Mo have been extracted from a high-resolution study of the (p,p') reaction at 295 MeV and extreme forward angles. By comparison with compound nucleus $\gamma$ decay experiments, this allows a test of the generalized Brink-Axel hypothesis in the energy region of the Pygmy Dipole Resonance. The Brink-Axel hypothesis is commonly assumed in astrophysical reaction network calculations and states that the gamma strength function in nuclei is independent of the structure of initial and final state. The present results validiate the Brink-Axel hypothesis for 96Mo and provide independent confirmation of the methods used to separate gamma strength function and level density in $\gamma$ decay experiments., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures
