1. 'Theory of Pore Conflation' and 'Shubhjyot's equation' in the treatment of Brilliant green dye-contaminated water using Jamun leaves biochar

Abstract

Abstract This study investigates the adsorption of Brilliant Green (BG) dye onto biochar derived from Syzygium cumini (Jamun) leaves (JLB). Biochar was produced via pyrolysis at 800 °C and examined employing various methods, including Scanning electron microscopy (SEM–EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, Raman spectroscopy, Zeta potential and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The optimum parameters for BG dye adsorption, determined by batch adsorption studies, were a temperature of 80 °C, an initial dye concentration of 500 mg L−1, a contact period of 30 min, and an agitation speed of 400 RPM. The maximum adsorption capacity of JLB for BG was 243.90 mg g−1. It was found that the adsorption process adhered to the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetics, revealing heterogeneous adsorption with chemisorption. A novel "Theory of Pore Conflation" was proposed to explain enhanced adsorption at higher temperatures, supported by SEM and FTIR analyses. Additionally, a new equation termed "Shubhjyot's equation" was introduced to account for time dependency in adsorption capacity calculations. The thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that the process is endothermic and spontaneous. Isopropanol was the most effective organic solvent for desorption studies, demonstrating biochar regeneration potential for up to five cycles. Phytotoxicity and cyto-genotoxicity assessments demonstrated the environmental safety of JLB compared to BG dye. The use of JLB production offers a way to repurpose agricultural waste, contributing to circular economy principles. This extensive study demonstrates JLB's promise as an effective, economical, and environmentally safe adsorbent for wastewater treatment that eliminates textile dyes. Graphical Abstract

2. Evaluation of l-dopa, proximate composition with in vitro anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of Mucuna macrocarpa beans: A future drug for Parkinson treatment

Abstract

Objective: To investigate L-3, 4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (l-dopa, anti-Parkinson drug), anti-inflammatory activity, proximate nutritional composition and antioxidant potential of Mucuna macrocarpa (M. macrocarpa) beans. Methods: l-dopa content was determined and quantified by high performance thin layer chromatography and reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) methods. Anti-inflammatory activity was performed by in vitro protein denaturation inhibition and human red blood cell membrane stabilisation activity. Proximate composition and elemental analysis were also investigated. The antioxidant potential (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, N-N-dimethyl-phenylenediamine and ferric-reducing antioxidant power) of M. macrocarpa beans were evaluated by using different extraction solvents. The RP-HPLC analysis also quantified significant phenolics such as gallic acid, tannic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid and p-coumaric acid. Results: RP-HPLC quantification revealed that M. macrocarpa beans contain a high level of l-dopa [(115.41 ± 0.985) mg/g] which was the highest among the Mucuna species from Indian sub-continent. Water extract of seed powder showed strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential. Proximate composition of M. macrocarpa beans revealed numerous nutritional and anti-nutritional components. RP-HPLC analysis of major phenolics such as tannic acid (43.795 mg/g), gallic acid (0.864 mg/g), p-coumaric acid (0.364 mg/g) and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (0.036 mg/g) quantified successfully from M. macrocarpa beans respectively. Conclusions: This study suggests that M. macrocarpa is a potential source of l-dopa with promising anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and nutritional benefits. 3. The Binding Affinity of Small Molecules with Yam Tyrosinase (Catechol Oxidase): A Biophysical Study

Abstract

Yam tyrosinase has become an economically essential enzyme due to its ease of purification and abundant availability of yam tubers. However, an efficient biochemical and biophysical characterization of yam tyrosinase has not been reported. In the present study, the interaction of yam (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius) tyrosinase was studied with molecules such as crocin (Crocus sativus), hydroquinone, and kojic acid. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR), fluorescence spectroscopy, and circular dichroism techniques were employed to determine the binding affinities and the changes in secondary and tertiary structures of yam tyrosinase in the presence of four relevant small molecules. Hydroquinone and crocin exhibited very low binding affinities of 0.24 M and 0.0017 M. Due to their apparent weak interactions, competition experiments were used to determine more precisely the binding affinities. Structure-function interrelationships can be correlated in great detail by this study, and the results can be compared with other available tyrosinases.

4. Bilateral Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma of the Temporal Bone: A Rare and Unusual Presentation

Abstract

Primary lymphoma of the temporal bone is an unusual finding in clinical practice and bilateral affection is even more rare. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports of bilateral primary temporal bone lymphoma without middle ear involvement in the English medical literature so far. We report, for the first time, a case of primary lymphoma involving both temporal bones which presented with left-sided infranuclear facial palsy. A combination of contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) was used to characterize and to map the extent of the lesion, as well as to identify the exact site of facial nerve affection. An excision biopsy and immunohistochemistry revealed diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (DLBCL). Whole body fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography-computed tomography study (PET-CT) was performed to stage the disease. The patient was treated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy and is now on regular follow-up. The patient is alive and asymptomatic without disease progression for the last twenty months after initial diagnosis.

5. Optimization studies for extraction of antioxidants from Mucuna sanjappae seeds: A promising natural drug for oxidative stress management

Abstract

Introduction and Aim: Cellular oxidative stress is responsible for various human diseases. Dietary antioxidant supplements from natural plants have good potential to reduce increased oxidative stress thus protecting from further medical complications. Genus Mucuna is well known for its promising health benefits. A common species of Mucuna, M. pruriens is being used for oxidative stress related diseases treatment. However, many species of this genus are not scientifically explored for their health-related beneficial properties. In the present study, we have made effort to investigate secondary metabolites composition and antioxidant potential in a Mucuna species namely M. sanjappae. In this work, we tried to understand superior system for secondary metabolites (total phenolics and flavonoids content) extraction and antioxidant activity in M. sanjappae seeds was demonstrated. Methodology: Four different solvents viz., water, methanol, ethanol, and acetone in combination with four different extraction conditions (static, shaking, microwave and sonication) each with three different times have been studied. Total 48 extract samples were generated which were used for total phenolics, total flavonoids content along with antioxidant activity (DPPH, DMPD and FRAP) determination. Further major phenolics were identified using HPLC system. Results: Water showed highest TPC and TFC level during microwave method for 120 seconds (81.627±0.728 mg GAE g-1 and 648.06±4.37 mg RUE g-1 respectively). The highest antioxidant activity was also found in M. sanjappae seeds extracted in water. RP-HPLC quantification of phenolics revealed tannic acid and gallic acid as predominant compounds. Correlation analysis indicated that the antioxidant of different extracted samples demonstrated a good positive relationship with TPC and TFC. Conclusion: Present attempt indicated that, simple solvent water along with microwave method can be used for maximum antioxidants extraction from M. sanjappae seeds. This Mucuna species may be further studied to exploit as a natural antioxidant source in medicine and food etc.

Abstract

Biomimetic nanotechnology is a fast-growing technology with far-reaching implications in a variety of therapeutic applications. The goal of this research is to develop green, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective strategies for producing cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanoparticles from Bos Taurus Indicus (A-2) urine and zinc oxide nanorods from the hydrothermal process. A solid-state reaction process is used to make nanocomposite materials. The synthesized nanomaterials and composites were characterized using advanced characterization techniques such as XRD, FE-SEM with EDS, DLS, Zeta potential, FT-IR, Raman spectroscopic analysis, and TGA with DSC analysis. The anti-bacterial, Anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of the synthesized nanomaterials and composites were investigated. This implies that they might be beneficial in medicine and drug administration.

Abstract

With the continuous rise of industrialization and agriculture, the concentration of organic contaminants such as dyes in the ecosystem has increased in subsequent years, causing major environmental contamination. Adsorption has been revealed to be a reliable and cost-effective way of eliminating organic pollutants. Biochar technology has the potential of converting trash into treasure when utilized for environmental remediation since it has numerous benefits such as the availability of diverse types of raw materials, low cost, and reusability. The potential of biochar as an adsorbent, support for catalysis, and a composite catalyst for dye degradation and mineralization is summarized in this research. It discusses its current research status in the adsorption and degradation of various dyes, incorporates the pertinent adsorption variables, encapsulates its regeneration techniques, investigates its engineering applications, and finally analyses limitations and discusses future development prospects.

Mucuna sanjappae seeds are conventionally used as food and medicine in the Western Ghats of India. Abstract

Primary lymphoma of the temporal bone is an unusual finding in clinical practice and bilateral affection is even more rare. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports of bilateral primary temporal bone lymphoma without middle ear involvement in the English medical literature so far. We report, for the first time, a case of primary lymphoma involving both temporal bones which presented with left-sided infranuclear facial palsy. A combination of contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) was used to characterize and to map the extent of the lesion, as well as to identify the exact site of facial nerve affection. An excision biopsy and immunohistochemistry revealed diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (DLBCL). Whole body fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography-computed tomography study (PET-CT) was performed to stage the disease. The patient was treated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy and is now on regular follow-up. The patient is alive and asymptomatic without disease progression for the last twenty months after initial diagnosis.

22. Purification and Partial Characterization of Lignin Peroxidase from Acinetobacter calcoaceticus NCIM 2890 and Its Application in Decolorization of Textile Dyes.

Abstract

Abstract  Lignin peroxidase was purified (72-fold) from Acinetobacter calcoaceticus NCIM 2890. The purified lignin peroxidase (55–65 kDa) showed dimeric nature. The maximum enzyme activity was observed at pH 1.0, between a broad temperature range of 50 and 70°C, at H2O2 concentration (40 mM) and the substrate concentration (n-propanol, 100 mM). Purified lignin peroxidase was able to oxidize a variety of substrates including Mn2+, tryptophan, mimosine, l-Dopa, hydroquinone, xylidine, n-propanol, veratryl alcohol, and ten textile dyes of various groups indicating as a versatile peroxidase. Most of the dyes decolorized up to 90%. Tryptophan stabilizes the lignin peroxidase activity during decolorization of dyes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
