4. Effect of direct reaction channels on deep sub-barrier fusion in asymmetric systems

Abstract

A steeper fall of fusion excitation function, compared to the predictions of coupled-channels models, at energies below the lowest barrier between the reaction partners, is termed as deep sub-barrier fusion hindrance. This phenomenon has been observed in many symmetric and nearly-symmetric systems. Different physical origins of the hindrance have been proposed. This work aims to study the probable effects of direct reactions on deep sub-barrier fusion cross sections. Fusion (evaporation residue) cross sections have been measured for the system $^{19}$F+$^{181}$Ta, from above the barrier down to the energies where fusion hindrance is expected to come into play. Coupled-channels calculation with standard Woods-Saxon potential gives a fair description of the fusion excitation function down to energies $\simeq 14\%$ below the barrier for the present system. This is in contrast with the observation of increasing fusion hindrance in asymmetric reactions induced by increasingly heavier projectiles, \textit{viz.} $^{6,7}$Li, $^{11}$B, $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O. The asymmetric reactions, which have not shown any signature of fusion hindrance within the measured energy range, are found to be induced by projectiles with lower $\alpha$ break-up threshold, compared to the reactions which have shown signatures of fusion hindrance. In addition, most of the $Q$-values for light particles pick-up channels are negative for the reactions which have exhibited strong signatures of fusion hindrance, \textit{viz.} $^{12}$C+$^{198}$Pt and $^{16}$O+$^{204,208}$Pb. Thus, break-up of projectile and particle transfer channels with positive $Q$-values seem to compensate for the hindrance in fusion deep below the barrier. 14. ASIC Implementation of Linear Equalizer Using Adaptive FIR Filter

Abstract

Power consumption plays a crucial role in the design of portable wireless communication devices, as it has a direct influence on the battery weight and volume required for operation. This article presents a novel design for a linear LMS equalizer for the optimization of filter order. The article describes the use of a variable length algorithm for dynamically updating the tap-length of the LMS adaptive filter to optimize the performance and for reducing the power in the adaptive filter core. An algorithm is applied to reduce and adjust the order of the filter in linear equalizer according to the channel conditions. The proposed design is implemented in the synopsis TSMC 65nm technology. The results from using the algorithm uses 28% less power when compared with the conventional 64-tap fixed length adaptive filter design. It has also been shown that the low-complexity of the additional circuitry needed for the variable length adaptive filter presents minimal overhead for this architecture.

Abstract

The parameters of protein metabolism, such as levels of total, soluble proteins free amino acids, activity levels of protease, glutamate dehydrogenase, aspartate amino transferase and alanine aminotransferase were assayed in the fat body of the fifth instar larva of silkworm, Bombyx mori, under the impact of ultrasound. In general ultrasound has an elevatory effect on these parameters. Changes in the levels of these biochemical constituents are correlated with the events of histogenesis and histolysis associated with the silkworm metamorphosis. Under the influence of ultrasound protein metabolism is stimulated to achieve greater turnover of silk proteins, greater spinning activity, and consequently greater sericultural output. 16. Chitosan immobilised granular FeOOH-MnxOybimetal-oxides nanocomposite for the adsorptive removal of lead from water

Abstract

Mixed metal-oxides are an important class of materials studied for the adsorptive removal of contaminants in water. However, the lack of affordable and versatile immobilisation techniques limits its large-scale deployment in water purification. The present work describes the use of protonated chitosan as a template and reinforcing agent to fabricate FeOOH-MnxOybimetal-oxide granules formed via complexation of metal-oxides with hydroxyl and amine groups in chitosan. The synthesis procedure also enables the modulation of nanocomposite into granules of different shapes and sizes. XRD and XPS analyses confirm the existence of MnO, Mn2O3, MnO2, and FeOOH phases in the composite. The granules showed excellent affinity to scavenge the model pollutant, Pb2+, through inner-sphere complexation with an estimated Sips isotherm capacity of 108.12mg/g. The chemical stability analysis of the composite showed that the leaching of Fe and Mn from the composite is pH, contact time, and temperature dependent. The background ions can also affect the chemical stability of the composite. However, Fe and Mn leaching were well within the permissible limit under typical groundwater pH and temperature. There is no significant effect on Pb2+intake by competing ions such as Cl-, NO3-, HCO3-, Ca2+, Fe2+, and Mn2+. In short, the improved adsorption capacity, the ability to form hydraulically stable granules, and ease of synthesis make the composite a practical adsorbent for removing heavy metal ions in water.
