Insecticides are dedicated to impair the insect organisms, but also have an impact on other, non-target organisms, including humans. In this way, they became important risk factor for disturbance of physiological homeostasis and can be involved in the development of diseases or in deterioration of existing conditions. The influence of sublethal doses of various insecticides on vertebrates’ and invertebrates’ organisms has been previously observed. In this paper, we have evaluated the impact of exposure to extremely low dose of neurotoxin, bendiocarb (0.1 nM), a commonly used carbamate insecticide on a model organism in neurobiology—Periplaneta americana. The assessment was performed on all levels of animal organism from molecular (oxidative stress parameters: phosphorylation level of proteins, cAMP level, protein kinase A and C levels, and octopamine) to physiological (heart beat and gas exchange tests) and behavioral (motor skills assay, grooming test). Exposure to such a low level of bendiocarb did not cause direct paralysis of insects, but changed their grooming behavior, decreased heart rate, and increased gas exchange. We also observed the increased parameters of oxidative stress as well as stressogenic response to 0.1 nM bendiocarb exposure. Exposure to a trace amount of bendiocarb also increased sensitivity to effective doses of the same insecticide, thus acts as preconditioning. These results force us to reconsider the possible risk from frequent/continuous exposure to traces of pesticide residues in the environment to human health.

Introduction: Low-frequency electromagnetic field (50 Hz) (EMF) can modify crucial neuronal processes. Existing data indicate that exposure to EMF may represent a mild stressor and contribute to disturbances of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The important regulatory pathways controlling HPA axis activity include two types of corticosteroid receptors: mineralocorticoid receptors (MRs) and glucocorticoid receptors. They are particularly abundant in the hippocampus, a key locus of HPA axis feedback control. The research aimed at determining whether (1) EMF exhibits hormesis, it means bidirectional action depending on EMF intensity (1 or 7 mT) and (2) repeated EMF exposure changes stress response to subsequent stress factors. Methods: The exposure (7 days, 1 h/day) of adult rats to EMF (1 mT and 7 mT) was repeated 3 times. HPA axis hormones and their receptors were analysed after each following exposure. Moreover, the impact of EMF exposure on hormonal and behavioural responses to subsequent stress factor – open-field test was evaluated. Results: Our data suggest that exposure to EMF can establish a new “set-point” for HPA axis activity. The direction and dynamics of this process depend on the intensity of EMF and the number of exposures. EMF of 1 mT induced an adaptive stress response, but 7 mT EMF caused sensitization. Consequently, EMF changed the vulnerability of the organism to a subsequent stress factor. We have also shown the increase in MR mRNA abundance in the hippocampus of 1 mT EMF-exposed rats, which can represent the possible neuroprotective response and suggest therapeutic properties of EMFs.

Studies reported evidence for opposite effects of extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field (EMF): harmful, including the oxidative stress induction, and beneficial, such as the activation of antioxidant defense. People’s exposure to EMF is often repeated or prolonged, and it is important to consider the cumulative effect of such kind of exposure on the organism. If changes evoked by repeated exposure to EMF are permanent, responsiveness to other stress factors can be modified. The aims of our study were (1) to evaluate changes in the levels of oxidative stress and antioxidant defense markers in the prefrontal cortex of adult rats after repeated exposure to 1 and 7 mT EMF and (2) to assess whether repeated EMF exposure can modify oxidative/antioxidative status in response to other stress factors. Rats were exposed to EMF 1 h/day for 7 days, one, twice, or three times. After each exposure, 8-isoprostanes, protein carbonyl groups, and the total antioxidant capacity were assessed. Part of the animals, after EMF treatment, was exposed to another stress factor—open field. Results showed that repeated exposure changed the oxidative/antioxidative status depending on the intensity of the EMF and the number of exposures. 1 mT EMF created weak changes in the oxidative status in the brain; however, 7 mT EMF moved the balance to a clearly higher level. The changes in the oxidative status after 1 mT EMF were enough to reduce, and after 7 mT EMF to intensify oxidative processes in response to the next stress. We concluded that the organism might adapt to “weak” EMF, while “strong” EMF exceeds the adaptive capacity of the organism and sensitizes it to subsequent stress, and thus may modulate vulnerability to diseases. Our results also provide new insights into the possible therapeutic properties of the magnetic field, as 1 mT EMF appears to have a potentially protective impact on the brain.

Glucocorticoid receptors are ligand-activated transcription factors, which play an important role in the brain, mainly in stress response regulation. There are two types of receptors for glucocorticosteroids: mineralocorticoid receptors (MR) with high-affinity for the ligands and glucocorticoid receptors (GR) with a tenfold lower affinity. Selective activation of the receptors during hypoxia may decide neuronal fate, especially in the hippocampus. Depending on the severity of hypoxia-induced damage, neurons undergo necrosis or apoptosis. In the penumbral region, where neurons die mainly through the process of apoptosis, selective GR activation increases excitotoxicity, interferes with apoptotic signalling pathways and causes energy deficit in the cells, all of which promote cell death. On the other hand, selective MR activation seems to be neuroprotective. It is suggested that the main role of MR in neuroprotection is to regulate the balance between anti- and proapoptotic proteins from bcl-2 family.

Anoxia during delivery is a complication that can disturb infant brain development leading to various types of neurological disorders. Our studies have shown that increased body temperature of newborn rats of both sexes intensifies the postanoxic oxidative stress and prevents triggering the endogenous adaptive response such as HIF-1α activation. Currently, brain-derived neurotrophic factor-BDNF is considered to be a modulator of neuronal plasticity. In the developing brain, mature BDNF and its precursor exhibit prosurvival action through the TrkB receptor and proapoptotic functions binding to p75NTR , respectively. The aim of our experiments was to check the effects of body temperature on the postanoxic level of BDNF and on the expression of its receptors as well as on the marker of apoptosis-caspase-3 in the rat brain. Two-day-old Wistar Han rats (male/female ratio, 1:1) were exposed to anoxia in 100% nitrogen atmosphere for 10 min in different thermal conditions, which allowed them to regulate their rectal temperature at the following levels: normothermic-33°C; hyperthermic-37°C; and extremely hyperthermic-39°C. Thermal conditions during neonatal anoxia affected the level of proBDNF, BDNF as well as their receptors and caspase-3 in the forebrain. The increased BDNF protein level followed by decreased caspase-3 protein level was probably dependent on body temperature under anoxic conditions and was observed only in rats maintaining decreased body temperature. The positive effect of BDNF was not observed under hyperthermic conditions. Moreover, BDNF level changes correlated with body temperature probably affected the learning and spatial memory in juvenile rats.

Members of TRP receptor family are involved in response to acidification. Here, we determined the effect of capsaicin, one of the TRP receptor activators, on hemolymph acid-base status in the American cockroach.

Exposure to electromagnetic field (EMF) induces physiological changes in organism that are observed at different levels—from biochemical processes to behavior. In this study, we evaluated the effect of EMF exposure (50 Hz, 7 mT) on cockroach’s response to noxious heat, measured as the latency to escape from high ambient temperature. We also measured the levels of lipid peroxidation and glutathione content as markers of oxidative balance in cockroaches exposed to EMF. Our results showed that exposure to EMF for 24, 72 h and 7 days significantly increases the latency to escape from noxious heat. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels increased significantly after 24-h EMF exposure and remained elevated up to 7 days of exposure. Glutathione levels significantly declined in cockroaches exposed to EMF for 7 days. These results demonstrate that EMF exposure is a considerable stress factor that affects oxidative state and heat perception in American cockroach.

Zakres prac obejmował również określenie ich stanu ochrony oraz ukazanie możliwości wykorzystania tych okazów jako atrakcji turystycznych. Wyniki badań wykazały, że drzewa ustanowione jako pomniki przyrody są w niektórych przypadkach trudne do odnalezienia w terenie. Popularność pomnikowych drzew jako obiektów turystycznych jest zróżnicowana. Drzewa jako elementy naturalnego krajobrazu wśród bogactwa zasobów przyrodniczych mogą stać się podstawą rozwoju turystyki edukacyjnej. Wydaje się jednak, że mogą one stanowić uzupełnienie rozbudowanego produktu turystycznego na tego typu obszarach.

Some natural alkaloids, e.g. capsaicin and camphor, are known to induce a desensitization state, causing insensitivity to pain or noxious temperatures in mammals by acting on TRP receptors. Our research, for the first time, demonstrated that a phenomenon of pharmacological blockade of heat sensitivity may operate in American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (L.). We studied the escape reaction time from 50°C for American cockroaches exposed to multiple doses of different drugs affecting thermo-TRP. Capsaicin, capsazepine, and camphor induced significant changes in time spent at noxious ambient temperatures. Moreover, we showed that behavioral thermoregulation in normal temperature ranges (10-40°C) is altered in treated cockroaches, which displayed a preference for warmer regions compared to non-treated insects. We also measured the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and catalase activity to exclude the secondary effects of the drugs on these processes. Our results demonstrated that increase in time spent at 50°C (five versus one trial at a heat plate) induced oxidative stress, but only in control and vehicle-treated groups. In capsaicin, capsazepine, menthol, camphor and AITC-treated cockroaches the number of exposures to heat had no effect on the levels of MDA. Additionally, none of the tested compounds affected catalase activity. Our results demonstrate suppression of the heat sensitivity by repeated capsazepine, camphor and capsaicin administration in the American cockroach.

Hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury involves increased oxidative stress. In asphyxiated newborns iron deposited in the brain catalyses formation of reactive oxygen species. Glutathione (GSH) and vitamin E are key factors protecting cells against such agents. Our previous investigation has demonstrated that newborn rats, showing physiological low body temperature as well as their hyperthermic counterparts injected with deferoxamine (DF) are protected against iron-mediated, delayed neurotoxicity of perinatal asphyxia. Therefore, we decided to study the effects of body temperature and DF on the antioxidant status of the brain in rats exposed neonatally to critical anoxia. Two-day-old newborn rats were exposed to anoxia in 100% nitrogen atmosphere for 10 min. Rectal temperature was kept at 33 °C (physiological to rat neonates), or elevated to the level typical of healthy adult rats (37 °C), or of febrile adult rats (39 °C). Half of the rats exposed to anoxia under extremely hyperthermic conditions (39 °C) were injected with DF. Cerebral concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA, lipid peroxidation marker) and the levels of GSH and vitamin E were determined post-mortem, (1) immediately after anoxia, (2) 3 days, (3) 7 days, and (4) 2 weeks after anoxia. There were no post-anoxic changes in MDA, GSH and vitamin E concentrations in newborn rats kept at body temperature of 33 °C. In contrast, perinatal anoxia at elevated body temperatures intensified oxidative stress and depleted the antioxidant pool in a temperature-dependent manner. Both the depletion of antioxidants and lipid peroxidation were prevented by post-anoxic DF injection. The data support the idea that hyperthermia may extend perinatal anoxia-induced brain lesions.

Transcriptional hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) plays the fundamental role in adaptive processes in response to hypoxia. Specific HIF-1α target genes are involved in glycolysis, erythropoiesis and angiogenesis to promote survival. In our previous study we have demonstrated that naturally low body temperature of newborn rats protects them against damage due to perinatal hypoxia. Therefore, our experiments aimed at checking the effects of body temperature during simulated perinatal anoxia on subsequent changes of expression of HIF-1α and its specific target genes such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and erythropoietin (EPO) in the rat brain. Two-day old Wistar rats were divided into three temperature groups: normothermic -33 °C, hyperthermic -37 °C and extremely hyperthermic -39 °C. The temperature was controlled 15 min before start and continued during 10 min of anoxia as well as for 2 h post-anoxia. HIF-1α was analysed by Western blot and immunofluorescence and mRNA levels of HIF-1α and its downstream genes (VEGF, EPO) were quantified by qRT-PCR. Thermal conditions during neonatal anoxia affected the hippocampal and neocortical level of HIF-1α protein. Physiological body temperature of newborn rats led to prominent accumulation of cerebral HIF-1α protein and significant upregulation of VEGF and EPO mRNA. In contrast, anoxia-induced HIF-1α activation at elevated body temperatures was less pronounced. Since HIF-1α and EPO have recently been regarded as promising therapeutical targets against brain lesions due to hypoxia/ischemia, presented data imply that in order to achieve a full effect of neuroprotection, the thermal conditions during and after the insult should be taken into consideration.

Asphyxia before, during, or after birth is an important cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity. The mechanism underlying neurological damage resulting from anoxia episode is complex and is not limited to the anoxia episode. Although the benefits of therapeutic hypothermia in secondary failure of oxidative metabolism have long been known, the principle of this therapy in tertiary phase of repair and reorganization have not yet to be fully elucidated. Currently brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is also considered to be beneficial to neuronal survival. Therefore, our experiments aimed at determining the effects of low body temperature during simulated perinatal anoxia on the level of the neurotrophic brain-derived factor (BDNF) and on the correlation between the level of BDNF (proBDNF and mBDNF) and the level of active caspase-3 (marker of apoptosis) in developing brain in tertiary phase after exposure. The results demonstrated that the ability of BDNF to inhibit caspase-3 activation and subsequent apoptosis likely accounts in large part for its protection against neuronal damage only in rats maintaining the low body temperature.

Objectives: The burden of acute gastrointestinal infections (AGIs) on the society has not been well studied in Central European countries, which prevents the implementation of effective, targeted public health interventions. Methods: We investigated patients of 11 randomly selected general practices and 8 hospital units. Each patient meeting the international AGI case definition criteria was interviewed on costs incurred related to the use of health care resources. Follow-up interview with consenting patients was conducted 2 to 4 weeks after the general practitioner (GP) visit or discharge from hospital, collecting information on self-medication costs and indirect costs. Costs were recalculated to US dollars by using the purchasing power parity exchange rate for Poland. Results: Weighting the inpatient costs by age-specific probability of hospital referral by GPs, the societal cost of a medically attended AGI case was estimated to be US $168. The main cost drivers of direct medical costs were cost of hospital bed days (US $28), cost of outpatient pharmacotherapy (US $20), and cost of GP consultation (US $10). Patients covered only the cost of outpatient pharmacotherapy. Considering the AGI population GP consultation rate, the age-adjusted societal cost of medically attended AGI episodes was estimated at US $2222 million, of which 53% was attributable to indirect costs. Conclusions: Even though AGIs generate a low cost for individuals, they place a high burden on the society, attributed mostly to indirect costs. Higher resources could be allocated to the prevention and control of AGIs.

In 2004, Poland has adopted the WHO goal of rubella elimination and congenital rubella syndrome prevention. The main target of the Programme is to stop transmission of the virus in the environment and prevention of congenital rubella in children. In Poland participation in the rubella elimination program requires clinical diagnosis of rubella cases and their confirmation with laboratory tests. Vaccination against rubella was introduced in 1987, initially only in 13 - year-old girls. Since 2003, single jab vaccination against rubella, measles and mumps is used (MMR vaccine for all children: primary vaccination at the age 13-15 months and a booster vaccination at the age of 10).To assess epidemiological situation of rubella in Poland in 2014, including vaccination coverage in Polish population.The descriptive analysis was based on data retrieved from routine mandatory surveillance system and published in the annual bulletins “Infectious diseases and poisonings in Poland in 2014” and “Vaccinations in Poland in 2014” (MP. Czarkowski, Warszawa 2014, NIZP-PZH, GIS).In 2014, there was a significant decrease in the number of rubella cases - with registered 5891 cases (in 2013 - 38 548 cases) - and a decline in incidence (from 101.1 per 100 000 to 15.3). The highest incidence, regardless of gender and the environment was observed in the age group 5-6 years (respectively 93.8 and 109.4 per 100 000). Similarly to 2013, rubella incidence of males was higher than the incidence in girls and women (20.0 versus 10.9). In 2014, no cases of congenital rubella syndrome were registered.The proportion of laboratory tests confirming/excluding rubella infection is still very low in Poland. In 2014, only 0.6% of rubella cases were laboratory confirmed.

Since 1998, Poland has been actively participating in the Measles Elimination Program, coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO). It requires achieving and maintaining very high vaccine coverage (95%), recording all cases and suspected cases of measles, and laboratory testing of all suspected measles cases in the WHO Reference Laboratory. In Poland it is a Laboratory of Department of Virology, NIPHNIH. In order to confirm or exclude the case of measles specific measles IgM antibodies should be measured using Elisa test, or molecular testing (PCR) should be performed to detect the presence measles virus RNA in biological material.To assess epidemiological situation of measles in Poland in 2014, including vaccination coverage in Polish population, and Measles Elimination Program implementation status.The descriptive analysis was based on data retrieved from routine mandatory surveillance system, measles case-based reports from 2014 sent to the Department of Epidemiology NIPH-NIH by Sanitary-Epidemiological Stations and data published in the annual bulletins “Infectious diseases and poisonings in Poland in 2014” and “Vaccinations in Poland in 2014” (MP Czarkowski et all., Warszawa 2015, NIZP-PZH, GIS).In total, there were 110 measles cases registered in Poland in 2014 (incidence 0.29 per 100,000), from which 87 cases (79%) were confirmed with laboratory test. That was more than in 2013 - when 84 cases were reported and incidence was 0,22. The highest incidence rate was observed among children aged 1 year (3,43 per 100,000). In 2014, 76 cases (69%) were hospitalized due to measles. No deaths from measles were reported. Vaccination coverage of children and youth aged 2-11 years ranged from 79.7% do 94.8% (primary vaccination in children born in 2004-2013) and from 77.7% to 85.8% (booster dose in children born in 2005-2011). In 2013, 127 measles-compatible cases were reported (67% of expected reports). In whole country the total number of suspects decreased form 258 in 2013 to 182 in 2014 r.In 2014, the epidemiological situation of measles deteriorated incomparison to proceeding year. The sensitivity of measles surveillance improved but is still insufficient. It is necessary to further promote Measles Elimination Program in Poland, to improve measles surveillance system and to maintain the high immunisation coverage.

A large number of chickenpox cases, occurring especially in children between 0-14 years old and among those who are not vaccinated, indicates the rationale for the use of chickenpox vaccinations. In Poland since 2002, chickenpox vaccination is included in the National Immunisation Programme as recommended. AIM. National Immunisation Programme for year 2014 was also used (3).In 2014, 221 628 cases of chickenpox were registered in Poland. The incidence was 575.9 and was lower than in 2013 (463.6). The highest number of cases was reported in mazowieckie voivodeship (35 321), the lowest in podlaskie voivodeship (5 346). The highest incidence was recorded in children aged 4 years. The chickenpox incidence among men was higher by 12.4% comparing to women (543.4). The incidence among rural residents (595.0) was higher by 9.8 % than among urban residents. Number of cases hospitalized due to mumps was 1 467. Number of people vaccinated against chickenpox was 63 608.In 2014, there was increase in the incidence of chickenpox in Poland. Since 2002 the number of people vaccinated against chickenpox increased. The increase in the number of people vaccinated against chickenpox would help maintain the downward trend in subsequent years.

Vaccination against mumps from 2003 is mandatory in Poland and given as two dose scheme with MMR vaccine (mumps, measles, and rubella). Earlier this vaccination was only recommended. Despite observed decline in mumps incidence for over a decade which is a result of conducted vaccinations, mumps is still a common disease among the children.To assess epidemiological situation of mumps in Poland in 2014, including vaccination coverage in Polish population, in comparison to previous years.The descriptive analysis was based on data retrieved from routine mandatory surveillance system and published in the annual bulletins “Infectious diseases and poisonings in Poland in 2014” and “Vaccinations in Poland in 2014” (1). Mumps cases were classified according to the criteria of surveillance case definition implemented in the European Union (Commission Decision of 28 April 2008 amending Decision 2002/253/EC). National Immunisation Programme for year 2014 was also used.In total, there were 2 508 mumps cases registered in Poland in 2014. Incidence of mumps was 6.5 per 100,000 and it was higher by 3.1 % in comparison with 2013 and lower by 9.7 % in comparison with median for the years 2008-2012. The highest incidence rate was observed among children aged 4 years (61.3 per 100,000). Incidence in men (7.8 per 100,000) was higher than in women (5.3). In 2014, 31 people were hospitalized due to mumps. Vaccination coverage of children aged 3 years in Poland in 2013 was 97.0% and it was lower by 0.5 % in comparison with year 2013 (97.5 %).Systematic execution of mumps vaccination in accordance with the National Immunisation Programme resulted in a significant decrease in the number of registered cases. Due to the high vaccination coverage further decline in the number of cases is expected.

SUMMARYA prospective survey was conducted in patients admitted to 11 randomly selected general practices and eight hospitals located in six provinces of Poland. For each patient meeting the international acute gastrointestinal infection (AGI) case definition criteria, information was collected on healthcare resources used. Antibacterial drug consumption was assessed using defined daily doses (DDD) and extrapolated to the national level using results from a parallel study of AGI incidence in the community. Additionally, a logistic multivariable model was fitted assessing determinants of antibacterial drug administration. Valid questionnaires were collected from 385 general practitioner (GP) consultations and 504 hospital admissions. Antibacterials for systemic use were prescribed during 60 (16%) GP consultations and 179 (36%) hospital admissions. The estimated societal AGI-related consumption of antibacterials amounted to 5·48 million DDD (95% uncertainty interval 1·56–14·12 million DDD). Antibacterial prescription was associated with work in large practices [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 3·16] and hospital wards (aOR 2·87), compared to small general practices, referral for microbiological testing (aOR 2·88), presence of fever (aOR 2·50), presence of mucus or blood in stool (aOR 1·94), age >65 yearsvs. vs. urban residence (aOR 1·53). Despite the fact that antibacterials were prescribed to a minority of consulted AGI patients, their consumption in society was not negligible due to the high prevalence of AGI symptoms. Prescription of antibacterial drugs should be restricted to cases with specific indications, preferably following microbiological investigation of AGI aetiology. To achieve this, clear national recommendations should be widely disseminated to physicians, and included in medical training curricula.

One of the variables oscillating seasonally in Helix pomatia L., described in our previous paper, was their rudimentary cryoprotection provided by modest increases in haemolymph glucose and glycerol concentrations in autumn and early spring, respectively. Because factors governing cryoprotective responses are unknown, we decided to investigate the effects of spring and autumn acclimation of H. pomatia to different thermal and photoperiod conditions on the changes in haemolymph concentrations of glucose and glycerol and on the glycogen level in selected organs. Neither acclimation to short-day photoperiod nor low ambient temperature evoked increase in glucose and glycerol concentration in spring and autumn. Both acclimation variants decreased hepatopancreatic glycogen level. The rudimentary freeze-tolerance in H. pomatia seems to be a combined effect of cold and short-day photoperiod and might also be affected by their nutritional and reproductive status. The effect of exposure to frost-bite is also likely to be involved.

We compared effects of a critical neonatal anoxia, applied in Wistar rats at body temperatures of 33, 37 and 39 °C, on memory performance in adulthood. Because hyperthermic–anoxic neonates suffer from hyperferremia an additional group of rats, exposed to anoxia at 39 °C, was injected with deferoxamine, a chelator of iron. At the age of 4 and 12 months all rats were examined in hole board, typical maze and Morris maze. The memory was disturbed by neonatal anoxia at 39 °C. The disturbances were prevented by both the naturally reduced body temperature and by deferoxamine. In conclusion, neonatal hyperthermia induces iron-mediated, extremely delayed postanoxic cognitive disturbances in adulthood.

Estivation enables land snails to survive a prolonged dryness but the return to active state imposes conditions of oxidative stress on internal organs due to a transient large increase in oxygen consumption, which augments mitochondrial production of reactive oxygen species. Therefore, activities of antioxidant enzymes, concentrations of reduced glutathione (GSH) and TBARS as an index of lipid peroxidation, were evaluated in Helix pomatia snails (i) during summer activity, (ii) during estivation, which was induced experimentally, (iii) at the start of arousal from estivation, and (iv) being aroused for 24 h. Estivation induced significant decreases in activity of catalase in the kidney and hepatopancreas and glutathione peroxidase in the kidney. Activity of glutathione reductase was unaffected by estivation/arousal cycle. Summer-active and estivating snails maintained high activity of glutathione transferase. Concentration of GSH was organ-dependent and was positively affected by estivation. Lack of increase in TBARS concentration during estivation/arousal cycle suggests that antioxidant defence system of H. pomatia snails is highly efficacious. In conclusion, permanent maintenance of relatively high activities of the antioxidant enzymes and the high concentration of GSH in H. pomatia snails indicate that they have well-developed strategy of defence against oxidative injury.

Arousal of land snails from torpor is inseparably connected with an increase in oxygen consumption leading to oxidative stress. Therefore, activity of antioxidant defence system (antioxidant enzymes and reduced glutathione) and degree of oxidative damage (concentration of malondialdehyde as an index of lipid peroxidation) in the snail Helix pomatia L., 1758 were tested to check whether torpid snails are able to activate their antioxidative defence against oxidative damage prior to arousal from winter torpor. Snails, which were collected from their natural habitats, were tested at the beginning, in the middle part, and at the end of winter torpor. Active snails collected in autumn and spring were taken as control groups. Snails were immediately killed and their foot, hepatopancreas, and kidney were used for the biochemical assays. Winter torpor induced significant changes in activities of the crucial antioxidant substances. The lowest activities were observed at the beginning of torpor, whereas activity of some of these enzymes was significantly enhanced prior to spring arousal. Reduced glutathione concentration did not show time-dependent changes during winter torpor. MDA (1,3-propanedial) level was elevated in the kidney and foot but was unchanged in the hepatopancreas. In conclusion, the snail H. pomatia is able to maintain REDOX balance necessary to prevent oxidative injury during arousal.

After hypoxic-ischemic insult iron deposited in the brain catalyzes formation of reactive oxygen species. Newborn rats, showing reduced physiological body temperature and their hyperthermic counterparts injected with deferoxamine (DF), a chelator of iron, are protected both against iron-mediated neurotoxicity and against depletion of low-molecular antioxidants after perinatal asphyxia. Therefore, we decided to study the effects of DF on activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase-SOD, glutathione peroxidase-GPx and catalase-CAT) in the brain of rats exposed neonatally to a critical anoxia at body temperatures elevated to 39°C. Perinatal anoxia under hyperthermic conditions intensified oxidative stress and depleted the pool of antioxidant enzymes. Both the depletion of antioxidants and lipid peroxidation were prevented by post-anoxic DF injection. The present paper evidenced that deferoxamine may act by recovering of SOD, GPx and CAT activity to reduce anoxia-induced oxidative stress.

Background Extremely low-frequency (50 Hz) electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF) is produced by electric power transmission lines and electronic devices of everyday use. Some phenomena are proposed as “first effects” of ELF-EMF: the discrete changes in the membrane potential and the increase of the calcium channel activity as well as the intracellular concentration of Ca 2+ . Interaction of the scorpion alpha toxin with the sodium channel depends on the orientation of the charges and may be perturbed by changes in the membrane polarization. The toxin induces overexcitability in the nervous system and an increase in the neurotransmitters released with different consequences, mainly the paralysis of muscles. We assumed that the exposure to ELF-EMF 0.7 mT will change the effects of the insect selective scorpion alpha toxin (recombinant LqhαIT from Leiurus quinquestriatus hebraeus) at the level of the cercal nerve function, the synaptic transmission and on the level of entire insect organism. Taking into account the compensatory mechanisms in organisms, we tested in addition ten times higher ELF-EMF on whole insects.Methods Experiments were performed in vivo on cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) and in vitro – on isolated cockroach abdominal nerve cord with cerci. In biotests, the effects of LqhαIT (10 −8 M) were estimated on the basis of the insect ability to turn back from dorsal to ventral side. Three groups were compared: the control one and the two exposed to ELF-EMF – 0.7 and 7 mT. Bioelectrical activity of the cercal nerve and of the connective nerve that leaves the terminal abdominal ganglion was recorded using extracellular electrodes. LqhαIT (5 × 10 −8 M) induced modifications of neuronal activity that were observed in the control cockroach preparations and in the ones exposed to ELF-EMF (0.7 mT). The exposure to ELF-EMF was carried out using coils with a size appropriate to the examined objects.Results The exposure to ELF-EMF (0.7 mT) modified the effects of LqhαIT (5 × 10−8 M) on activity of the cercal nerve and of the connective nerve. We observed a decrease of the toxin effect on the cercal nerve activity, but the toxic effect of LqhαIT on the connective nerve was increased. Biotests showed that toxicity of LqhαIT (10 −8 M) on cockroaches was reduced by the exposure to ELF-EMF (0.7 and 7 mT).Conclusions The exposure to 50 Hz ELF-EMF modified the mode of action of the anti-insect scorpion alpha toxin LqhαIT at cellular level of the cockroach nervous system and in biotests. Toxin appeared as a usefull tool in distinguishing between the primary and the secondary effects of ELF-EMF.

A large number of chickenpox cases, occurring especially in children, indicates the rationale for the use of chickenpox vaccinations. In Poland since 2002, chickenpox vaccination is included in the National Immunisation Programme as recommended.To assess epidemiological situation of chickenpox in Poland in 2013 in comparison to previous years.The descriptive analysis was based on data retrieved from routine mandatory surveillance system and published in the annual bulletins "Infectious diseases and poisonings in Poland in 2013" and "Vaccinations in Poland in 2013" (Czarkowski MP i in., Warszawa 2014, NIZP-PZH i GIS). National Immunisation Programme for year 2013 was also used.In 2013, 178 501 cases of chickenpox were registered in Poland. The incidence was 463.6 and was lower than in 2012 (540.5). The highest number of cases was reported in mazowieckie voivodeship, the lowest in podlaskie voivodeship. The highest incidence was recorded in children aged 4 years (6 545.1 per 100,000). The chickenpox incidence among men (491.7) was higher by 12.4% comparing to women (437.3). The incidence among rural residents (497.2) was higher than among urban residents (441.7). Number of cases hospitalized due to mumps was 1 184. Number of people vaccinated against chickenpox was 57 168.In 2013, there was decrease in the incidence of chickenpox [corrected] in Poland with small fluctuations. Since 2002 the number of people vaccinated against chickenpox increased. The increase in the number of people vaccinated against chickenpox would help maintain the downward trend in subsequent years.

Since 1998, Poland has been actively participating in the Measles Elimination Program, coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO). It requires achieving and maintaining very high vaccine coverage (95%), recording all cases and suspected cases of measles, and laboratory testing of all suspected measles cases in the WHO Reference Laboratory. In Poland it is a Laboratory of Department of Virology, NIPH-NIH. In order to confirm or exclude the case of measles specific measles IgM antibodies should be measured using Elisa test, or molecular testing (PCR) should be performed to detect the presence measles virus RNA in biological material.To assess epidemiological situation of measles in Poland in 2013, including vaccination coverage in Polish population, and Measles Elimination Program implementation status.The descriptive analysis was based on data retrieved from routine mandatory surveillance system and published in the annual bulletins "Infectious diseases and poisonings in Poland in 2013" and "Vaccinations in Poland in 2013", and measles case-based reports from 2013 sent to the Department of Epidemiology NIPH-NIH by Sanitary-Epidemiological Stations.In total, there were 84 measles cases registered in Poland in 2013 (incidence 0.22 per 100,000). The highest incidence rate was observed among infants (2.18 per 100,000) and children aged 1 year (1.27 per 100,000). In 2013, 56 cases (66.7%) were hospitalized due to measles. No deaths from measles were reported. Vaccination coverage of children and youth aged 2-11 years ranged from 82.8% do 99.5% (primary vaccination in children born in 2012-2007) and from 73.6% to 93.2% (booster dose in children born in 2004-2001). In 2013, 127 measles-compatible cases were reported (67% of expected reports). Two hundred seven cases (80%) were confirmed by IgM ELISA test.In 2013, the epidemiological situation of measles deteriorated in comparison to proceding year. The sensitivity of measles surveillance improved but is still insufficient. It is necessary to further promote Measles Elimination Program in Poland, to improve measles surveillance system and to maintain the high immunisation coverage.

Vaccination against mumps from 2003 is mandatory in Poland and given as two dose scheme with MMR vaccine (mumps, measles, and rubella). Earlier this vaccination was only recommended. Despite observed decline in mumps incidence for over a decade which is a result of conducted vaccinations, mumps is still a common childhood disease.To assess epidemiological situation of mumps in Poland in 2013, including vaccination coverage in Polish population, in comparison to previous years.The descriptive analysis was based on data retrieved from routine mandatory surveillance system and published in the annual bulletins "Infectious diseases and poisonings in Poland in 2013" and "Vaccinations in Poland in 2013" (Czarkowski MP i in., Warszawa 2013, NIZP-PZH i GIS). Mumps cases were classified according to the criteria of surveillance case definition implemented in the European Union (Commission Decision of 28 April 2008 amending Decision 2002/253/EC). National Immunisation Programme for year 2013 was also used.In total, there were 2 436 mumps cases registered in Poland in 2013. Incidence of mumps was 6.3 per 100,000 and it was lower by 12.5% in comparison with 2012 and lower by 18.2% in comparison with median for the years 2007-2010. The highest incidence rate was observed among children aged 5 years (54.0 per 100,000). Incidence in men (7.5) was higher than in women (5.2). In 2013, 38 people were hospitalized due to mumps. Vaccination coverage of children aged 3 years in Poland in 2013 was 97.5% and it was lower by 0.4% in comparison with year 2012.Systematic execution of mumps vaccination in accordance with the National Immunisation Programme resulted in a significant decrease in the number of registered cases. Due to the high vaccination coverage further decline in the number of cases is expected.

We examined Helix pomatia L., 1758 snails to answer two questions. First, is their winter dormancy facilitated by cold-seeking behaviour, or is it rather a passive phenomenon imposed by cold weather? Second, what thermal conditions are necessary to arouse these snails out of torpor in midwinter and in spring? Snails, collected from natural habitats, were placed in a temperature-gradient apparatus. Their thermal preference was recorded for 48 h under natural photoperiod in early spring, midsummer, and autumn. The autumn recording was continued until the end of November on non-starved and starved snails. Two additional sessions were performed on torpid snails in January (latencies of arousals from torpor at various temperatures and immediate thermal preferences were recorded) and in February (they were kept permanently in darkness at 5 °C and their spontaneous arousals were examined). Temperature selected in spring (23.60 ± 0.15 °C) was significantly lower than that in summer (26.90 ± 0.05; P < 0.05) and in autumn (27.50 ± 0.10 °C; P < 0.01). The prolonged autumn recording did not show cold-seeking behaviour either in non-starved or in starved snails. Threshold temperature inducing midwinter arousals was 10 °C and the aroused snails immediately selected temperatures indistinguishable from those in summer and autumn. Spontaneous arousals from torpor in the snails continuously exposed to cold occurred within a period of arousals in the field. In conclusion, winter torpor of the snails displays unique properties, i.e., its start and maintenance are passive phenomena, while its spring interruption is a precisely controlled, endogenous mechanism.

The aim of the investigation was to verify our hypothesis that extreme tolerance of newborn rodents to anoxia is determined by their ability to maintain reduced body temperature and to keep on gasping. Newborn Wistar rats were used. In separate experiments we checked (1) effect of extreme thermal conditions on rectal temperature (Tre) of the newborns in their nests; (2) effect of ambient temperature (Ta) on oxygen consumption; (3) effects of controlled changes in Tre on thermoregulatory and respiratory responses to anoxia and on anoxia tolerance. In their nests rat pups controlled Tre at 32–36 °C while the Tre–Ta difference changed within a range of 1–20 °C. The lowest oxygen consumption of ∼24 ml O2 kg−1 min−1 was recorded at Ta of 32 °C. Pups, exposed to anoxia at their normal Tre of 33 °C, were able to decrease Tre by another 1.7 °C and they kept on extremely slow and quiescent gasping for scheduled 25 min. In contrast, rats at Tre of 37 °C and 39 °C reached a critical phase of accelerated and shallow gasping after 14.95±0.40 min and 9.25±0.30 min, respectively. In conclusion, reduced Tre and unique gasping ability make newborn rats extremely tolerant to asphyxia.

The highest incidence rate was observed among infants (2.08 per 100 000) and children aged 1 year (2.47 per 100 000). In 2012, 37 cases (52,9%) were hospitalized due to measles. No deaths from measles were reported. Vaccination coverage of children and youth aged 2-11 years ranged from 83.6% do 99.6% (primary vaccination in children born in 2011-2006) and from 76.6% do 96.7% (booster dose in children born in 2003-2001). Performance of the surveillance system was insufficient with only 127 measles-compatible cases reported in 2012 (33% of expected reports). Fifty cases (71%) were confirmed by IgM ELISA test.The epidemiological situation of measles deteriorated in 2012 in comparison to proceding year. The results indicate a need to further promote Measles Elimination Program in Poland, maintain the high immunisation coverage and improve measles surveillance system.

In 2004, Poland has adopted the WHO goal of rubella elimination and congenital rubella syndrome prevention. Participation in the rubella elimination program requires clinical diagnosis of rubella to be confirmed with laboratory test. In Poland, until 2003, national vaccination recommendation included a dose of rubella vaccine only for girls aged 13 years. Among men, the incidence of measles remained high creating a risk of infection of non-immune pregnant women which may lead to the development of congenital rubella syndrome in the child.To assess epidemiological situation of rubella in Poland in 2012, including vaccination coverage in Polish population.The descriptive analysis was based on data retrieved from routine mandatory surveillance system and published in the annual bulletins "Infectious diseases and poisonings in Poland in 2012" and "Vaccinations in Poland in 2012".In 2012, there was a significant increase in the number of cases of rubella - 6 263 cases (in 2011, 4 290 cases) - and the increase in incidence (from 11.1 per 100 thousand. 16.3). The highest incidence rate, regardless of gender and the environment, was observed among adolescents aged 15-19 years (118.0 per 100 000). As in 2011, the incidence of rubella in boys and men was higher than the incidence in girls and women (25.6 versus 7.5). In 2012, no cases of congenital rubella syndrome were registered.The proportion of laboratory tests confirming/excluding rubella infection is still very low in Poland. In 2012, only 0.2% of rubella cases were laboratory confirmed.

The highest incidence was recorded in children aged 4 years (7 611.5 per 100 000). The chickenpox incidence among men (570.7) was higher than among women (512.2). The incidence among rural residents (553.9) was higher than among urban residents (531.8). Number of cases hospitalized due to mumps was 1 361. Number of people vaccinated against chickenpox was 56 213.In 2012, there was an increase in the incidence of smallpox in Poland. This trend is continuing since 2004, which can be partly explained by improved surveillance of the disease.

The aim of the present investigation was to check the ability of experimentally farmed Helix aspersa (O. F. Mull.), raised in conditions enabling rapid growth and successful reproduction, to modulate their antioxidant defence system during enforced aestivation. The aestivation induced increase in activity of total and selenium-dependent peroxidase in the kidney and foot but did not evoke increase in activity of catalase, glutathione transferase and concentration of reduced glutathione. Moreover, the aestivation did not induce lipid and protein peroxidation, estimated as concentrations of thiobarbituric acid and carbonyl protein groups, respectively. H. aspersa farmed under favourable or natural conditions are able to modulate their antioxidant defence system in response to oxidative stress following transition from the experimental aestivation to active state. key words: land snails, Helix aspersa, aestivation, oxidative stress, antioxidants, acclimation

Since 2001 Poland has endorsed measles elimination programme which is coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO). To accomplish measles elimination in the country, achievement of vaccination coverage at 95% in the population is needed, as is the monitoring of the epidemiological situation, i.e.: reporting on cases suspected of measles and conducting laboratory diagnostics in WHO Reference Laboratory. Polish Reference Laboratory is located at the Department of Virology (NIPH-NIH).The aim of the article is to analyze the epidemiological situation of measles in Poland in 2010 with presenting the measles vaccination coverage and the progress of the measles elimination programme in Poland.The epidemiological situation of measles in Poland was analyzed on the basis of the case-based questionnaires of cases suspected of measles sent to NIPH-NIH by the Sanitary and Epidemiological Stations, data from the publications: "Infectious diseases and poisonings in Poland in 2010" and "Vaccinations in Poland in 2010" (MP. Czarkowski et al., Warsaw 2011, NIPH-NIH, Chief Sanitary Inspectorate).In 2010, 13 cases of measles were notified to the surveillance system in Poland (incidence 0.03 per 100 000 population) and only six of them (46.1%) were laboratory confirmed. The highest incidence was observed in the age group 0-4 and was estimated at 0.3 per 100 000 population. Out of all cases, 9 (69.2%) were hospitalized. No fatal cases due to the measles were reported. In 2010 the maintenance of high vaccination coverage among children aged 2 and 11 years old was observed--from 84.9% to 99.7% (primary vaccination, children born in 2009-2004) and from 0.6 % to 96.6% (booster vaccination, children born in 2003-1999). A total of 38 measles cases and cases suspected of measles were reported (10% of the expected notifications).The epidemiological situation of measles in 2010 in comparison with the situation in 2009, has improved (decline in the incidence amounting to 87%). The low number of measles notifications reflects the low sensitivity of the measles surveillance system. Irrespective of that, the vaccination coverage was sustained at the satisfactory level. In order to achieve the improvement of the measles surveillance system, promoting of the measles elimination programme among the physicians is necessary with focusing on the necessity to report and laboratory confirm all measles cases and the cases suspected of measles.

Currently an ecologic study assessing the relationship between tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) with diverse environmental and social factors at the lowest administrative level is developed for Poland. Because the disease is affecting only part of the country, the authors will try to identify factors which could explain this uneven geographic distribution of the disease. To increase precision of the analysis we will utilize the highest possible resolution of the analysis, for which routinely collected data are available. Part of the data at the commune level will be obtained from the Polish communicable disease surveillance system and the Central Statistical Office, and part will be obtained using GIS tools from maps prepared by diverse institutions. The outcome studied will be TBE cases assigned to commune of residence or to place of exposure. The explanatory variables will be: land use categories (percent of commune area and their border length), meteorological variables (temperatures, rainfall), socio-economic status of communes (income per capita, unemployment rate), and Lyme borreliosis incidence (as a complex indicator of tick activity and human to tick exposure).

In Poland 115 measles cases were registered in 2009 (0.3 per 100,000 population). The most affected age group were children aged 0-4 years (incidence 2.02 per 100,000 population) and 6-year olds (1.43). 79 measles cases (69%) were hospitalized, no deaths were recorded. Poland participates in the WHO Measles Elimination Strategy. Presently, the most important is the maintenance of a sensitive and timely surveillance of measles and measles-compatible cases, with serologic testing of one suspect case per 100,000 population. The performance of the surveillance system was insufficient with only 147 measles-compatible cases reported in 2009 (39% of expected reports). Serologic confirmation of cases was also insufficient, with 62 cases (54%) confirmed by IgM ELISA test. These results indicate the need to maintain the high immunisation coverage and improve measles surveillance system.

In Poland, 7,587 cases of rubella were registered in 2009 (incidence 19.9 per 100,000 population). According to a new rubella case definition, introduced in 2009, 7 (0.1%) cases were classified as confirmed cases, 30 (0.4%) as probable. One case of congenital rubella syndrome was reported. The incidence in men (26.6) was 1.9-times higher than in women (13.6). The highest incidence was observed in children aged 7 and 8 years (180.3 and 175.6, respectively). No rubella deaths were registered. An improvement of laboratory diagnosis of reported cases is necessary to assess the impact of 2-dose immunization implemented in 2003 on rubella epidemiology in Poland.

To achieve measles elimination, an efficient surveillance system for rash illnesses is necessary. The aim of the present study was to ascertain which viruses, other than measles, are causing measles-like illnesses (MLIs) in Poland. Serum samples (n=278) collected from MLI cases and submitted to the National Reference Laboratory during 2006-2007 were investigated for anti-measles (MeV), rubella (RUBV), parvovirus B19 (B19V), Epstein-Barr (EBV) and herpesvirus type-6 (HHV-6) IgM presence. Age was strongly associated with MLIs etiology. In the youngest age group, 0-4 years, MeV and HHV-6 infection were prevailing, while in group of 5-9 years--RUBV and B 19V. Measles was confirmed more often in patients with high fever (p0.001) and with rash lasting longer than 5 days (p0.001). The type of rash was not significantly associated with MeV infection. Our results strongly suggest that according to WHO EURO strategic plan, Poland is close to elimination phase. High number of MLIs were caused by pathogens other than measles. Addition of anti-B 19V IgM testing to routine MLIs screening protocol may improve system performance in the more advanced stages of measles elimination.
