Abstract

This article examines George Noyes Miller's The Strike of a Sex (1891) and Annie Denton Cridge's Man's Rights (1870) as dystopias attempting to depict the ideal of human equality achieved through cross-gender solidarity. The novels' inconsistencies are seen as resulting from an erosion of generic patterns, rhetorical strategies, and stereotypical characterizations as the authors seek to express new sentiments in a cultural ambience still governed by binary thinking and well-established beliefs. The result of the juxtaposition of the fossilized conventions and advanced, idealistic approaches produces a rudimentary form of dialogism where crucial roles are played by the imagery of separate spheres and the concept of boundary crossing, while the notion of cross-gender solidarity becomes the textual dominant of both works.

Abstract

The article offers an analysis of two nineteenth-century dystopias as texts exceptional in their treatment of fashion as a phenomenon central to plot and character development, a feature that breaks with the tradition of seeing clothing as a relatively minor element in the structure of alternative eutopian and dystopian realities. A consideration of the two novels—J. L. Collins's Queen Krinaleen (1874) and Walter Besant's The Inner House (1888)—in view of Baudrillard's and Barthes's theories of fashion results in a semiotic reading that highlights the tautological function of the vestimentary code, which proves its strength by radically transforming the societies and determining the meaning formation mechanisms in both texts.

Abstract

The volume demonstrates the scope of utopian thinking and the enduring significance of past utopian fictions and historical events as potentially contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the contemporary reality. The essays examine the concept of utopia in a variety of contexts, such as philosophy, translation, music, social and political issues, like workers'movements and ideology, exploring global utopian fiction from medieval Persian poetry, through late 19th- and early 20th-century narratives, to contemporary Russian and British dystopian novels. Taken together, the texts attest to the lasting allure of the hopeful utopian visions as well as to the pertinence of the dystopian warnings contained in the darker fictive scenarios and social speculations.
