Ultrathin Ta/CoFeB/Pt trilayer structures are relevant to a wide range of spintronic applications, from magnetic tunnel junctions to skyrmionics devices. Controlling the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, Gilbert damping and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the CoFeB layer is key for these applications. We examine the role of sputter gas composition during the Pt overlayer deposition of a Ta/CoFeB/Pt trilayer in Ar, Kr and Xe working gas environments during direct current magnetron sputtering. Decreasing density of the Pt layer (from 21 g/cm(3) to 15 g/cm(3)) was apparent in specular x-ray reflectivity measurements of the trilayer films when increasing the molecular weight of the sputtering gas from Ar to Kr to Xe. Significant effects on the Gilbert damping and the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) energy were observed, with increases in the damping from 0.037(1) to 0.042(1) to 0.048(1), and reductions in the interfacial DMI from 0.47(4) mJ/m(2) to 0.45(5) mJ/m(2) to 0.39(4) mJ/m(2). The ability to control the perpendicular magnetization and DMI strength of these materials through judicious interfacial control is a means toward magnetic devices with better stability at smaller lateral dimension, key to device scaling for spintronic device arrays.

The exchange interaction in ferromagnetic ultra thin films is a critical parameter in magnetization-based storage and logic devices, yet the accurate measurement of it remains a challenge. While a variety of approaches are currently used to determine the exchange parameter, each has its limitations, and good agreement among them has not been achieved. To date, neutron scattering, magnetometry, Brillouin light scattering, spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and Kerr microscopy have all been used to determine the exchange parameter. Here, we present a method that exploits the wavevector selectivity of Brillouin light scattering to measure the spin wave dispersion in both the backward volume and Damon–Eshbach orientations. The exchange, saturation magnetization, and magnetic thickness are then determined by a simultaneous fit of both dispersion branches with general spin wave theory without any prior knowledge of the thickness of a magnetic “dead layer.” In this work, we demonstrate the strength of this technique for ultrathin metallic films, typical of those commonly used in industrial applications for magnetic random-access memory.

Symmetry is a powerful concept in physics, but its applicability to far-from-equilibrium states is still being understood. Recent attention has focused on how far-from-equilibrium states lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking. Conversely, ultrafast optical pumping can be used to drastically change the energy landscape and quench the magnetic order parameter in magnetic systems. Here, we find a distinct symmetry-dependent ultrafast behaviour by use of ultrafast x-ray scattering from magnetic patterns with varying degrees of isotropic and anisotropic symmetry. After pumping with an optical laser, the scattered intensity reveals a radial shift exclusive to the isotropic component and exhibits a faster recovery time from quenching for the anisotropic component. These features arise even when both symmetry components are concurrently measured, suggesting a correspondence between the excitation and the magnetic order symmetry. Our results underline the importance of symmetry as a critical variable to manipulate the magnetic order in the ultrafast regime.

Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures that hold great promise as nanoscale information carriers in non-volatile memory and logic devices. While room-temperature magnetic skyrmions and their current-induced manipulation were recently demonstrated, the stray field resulting from their finite magnetization as well as their topological charge limit their minimum size and reliable motion in tracks. Antiferromagnetic (AF) skyrmions allow these limitations to be lifted owing to their vanishing magnetization and net zero topological charge, promising room-temperature, ultrasmall skyrmions, fast dynamics, and insensitivity to external magnetic fields. While room-temperature AF spin textures have been recently demonstrated, the observation and controlled nucleation of AF skyrmions operable at room temperature in industry-compatible synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) material systems is still lacking. Here we demonstrate that isolated skyrmions can be stabilized at zero field and room temperature in a fully compensated SAF. Using X-ray microscopy techniques, we are able to observe the skyrmions in the different SAF layers and demonstrate their antiparallel alignment. The results are substantiated by micromagnetic simulations and analytical models using experimental parameters, which confirm the chiral SAF skyrmion spin texture and allow the identification of the physical mechanisms that control the SAF skyrmion size and stability. We also demonstrate the local nucleation of SAF skyrmions via local current injection as well as ultrafast laser excitations at zero field. These results will enable the utilization of SAF skyrmions in skyrmion-based devices.

Antisymmetric exchange interactions lead to non-reciprocal spin-wave propagation. As a result, spin waves confined in a nanostructure are not standing waves; they have a time-dependent phase, because counter-propagating waves of the same frequency have different wavelengths. We report on a Brillouin light scattering (BLS) study of confined spin waves in Co/Pt nanowires with strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI). Spin-wave quantization in narrow ($\lesssim 200$ nm width) wires dramatically reduces the frequency shift between BLS Stokes and anti-Stokes lines associated with the scattering of light incident transverse to the nanowires. In contrast, the BLS frequency shift associated with the scattering of spin waves propagating along the nanowire length is independent of nanowire width. A model that considers the chiral nature of modes captures this physics and predicts a dramatic reduction in frequency shift of light scattered from higher energy spin waves in narrow wires, which is confirmed by our experiments., 9 pages, 9 figures

We report on the magnetic damping properties of polycrystalline $\mathrm{Fe}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{V}$ alloy thin films that are deposited at room temperature. By varying the concentration of $\mathrm{V}$ in the alloy, the saturation magnetization can be adjusted from that of $\mathrm{Fe}$ to near zero. We show that exceptionally low values of the damping parameter can be maintained over the majority of this range, with a minimum damping at approximately 15%--20% $\mathrm{V}$ concentration. Such a minimum is qualitatively reproduced with ab initio calculations of the damping parameter, although at a concentration closer to 10% $\mathrm{V}$. The measured intrinsic damping has a minimum value of (1.53 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.08) \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$, which is approximately a factor of 3 higher than our calculated value of 0.48 \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$. From first-principles theory, we outline the factors that are mainly responsible for the trend of the damping parameter in these alloys. In particular, the band structure and resulting damping mechanism is shown to change at $\mathrm{V}$ concentrations greater than approximately 35% $\mathrm{V}$ content.

We report on the strong coupling between a metallic ferromagnetic ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{75}{\mathrm{Co}}_{25}$ thin-film patterned element and a range of superconducting $\mathrm{Nb}$ half-wavelength co-planar waveguide (CPW) resonators. By varying the volume of the ferromagnet we demonstrate that the coupling rate scales linearly with the square root of the number of spins and achieve a coupling rate over 700 MHz, approaching the ultrastrong coupling regime. Experiments varying the center conductor width while maintaining constant magnetic volume verify that decreasing the center conductor width increases coupling and cooperativity. Our results show that the frequency dependence of the coupling rate is linear with the fundamental and higher-order odd harmonics of the CPW, but with differing efficiencies. The results show promise for scaling planar superconducting resonator-magnetic hybrid systems to smaller dimensions.

We studied the impact of He+ irradiation on the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI) in Ta/Co20Fe60B20/Pt/MgO samples. We found that irradiation of 40 keV He+ ions increases the DMI by approximately 20% for fluences up to 2 × 1016 ions/cm2 before it decreases for higher fluence values. In contrast, the interfacial anisotropy shows a distinctly different fluence dependence. To better understand the impact of the ion irradiation on the Ta and Pt interfaces with the Co20Fe60B20 layer, we carried out Monte-Carlo simulations, which showed an expected increase in disorder at the interfaces. A moderate increase in disorder increases the total number of triplets for the three-site exchange mechanism and consequently increases the DMI. Our results demonstrate the significance of disorder for the total DMI.

[EN]Optical interactions are governed by both spin and angular momentum conservation laws, which serve as a tool for controlling light–matter interactions or elucidating electron dynamics and structure of complex systems. Here, we uncover a form of simultaneous spin and orbital angular momentum conservation and show, theoretically and experimentally, that this phenomenon allows for unprecedented control over the divergence and polarization of extreme-ultraviolet vortex beams. High harmonics with spin and orbital angular momenta are produced, opening a novel regime of angular momentum conservation that allows for manipulation of the polarization of attosecond pulses—from linear to circular—and for the generation of circularly polarized vortices with tailored orbital angular momentum, including harmonic vortices with the same topological charge as the driving laser beam. The magnetocaloric effect, that is, the reversible temperature change experienced by a magnetic material upon the application or removal of a magnetic field, has become a topic of increasing research interest due to its potential application in refrigeration at ambient temperature that is energy efficient and environmentally friendly [1] . From a technological point of view, the improvement of magnetic refrigeration systems can have a notable impact on society: A large fraction of the electricity consumed in residential and commercial markets is used for temperature and climate control. From the point of view of magnetic materials, research on this topic mainly focuses on the discovery of new materials with lower cost and enhanced performance. In addition, the characterization of the magnetocaloric effect can be used for more fundamental studies of the characteristics of phase transitions.

We studied the symmetry of magnetic properties and the resulting magnetic textures in ultra-thin epitaxial Au0.67Pt0.33/Co/W(110), a model system exhibiting perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and interface Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI). As a peculiar feature, the C2v crystal symmetry induced by the Co/W interface results in an additional uniaxial in-plane magnetic anisotropy in the cobalt layer. Photo-emission electron microscopy with magnetic sensitivity reveals the formation of self-organised magnetic stripe domains oriented parallel to the hard in-plane magnetisation axis. We attribute this behavior to the lower domain wall energy when oriented along this axis, where both the DMI and the in-plane magnetic anisotropy favor a Néel domain wall configuration. The anisotropic domain wall energy also leads to the formation of elliptical skyrmion bubbles under a weak out-of-plane magnetic field.

We quantify the presence of spin-mixed states in ferromagnetic 3D transition metals by precise measurement of the orbital moment. While central to phenomena such as Elliot-Yafet scattering, quantification of the spin-mixing parameter has hitherto been confined to theoretical calculations. We demonstrate that this information is also available by experimental means. Comparison of ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism results show that Kittel's original derivation of the spectroscopic g factor requires modification, to include spin mixing of valence band states. Our results are supported by ab initio relativistic electronic structure theory.

The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is important for chiral domain walls (DWs) and for stabilizing magnetic skyrmions. We study the effects of introducing increasing thicknesses of Ir, from zero to 2 nm, into a Pt/Co/Ta multilayer between the Co and Ta layers. There is a marked increase in magnetic moment, due to the suppression of the dead layer at the interface with Ta, but the perpendicular anisotropy is hardly affected. All samples show a universal scaling of the field-driven DW velocity across the creep and depinning regimes. Asymmetric bubble expansion shows that DWs in all of the samples have the left-handed Neel form. The value of in-plane magnetic field at which the creep velocity shows a minimum drops markedly on the introduction of Ir, as does the frequency shift of the Stokes and anti-Stokes peaks in Brillouin light scattering (BLS) measurements. Despite this qualitative similarity, there are quantitative differences in the DMI strength given by the two measurements, with BLS often returning higher values. Many features in bubble expansion velocity curves do not fit simple models commonly used, namely a lack of symmetry about the velocity minimum and no difference in velocities at high in-plane fields. These features are explained by the use of a new model in which the depinning field is allowed to vary with in-plane field in a way determined from micromagnetic simulations. This theory shows that the velocity minimum underestimates the DMI field, consistent with BLS giving higher values. Our results suggest that the DMI at an Ir/Co interface has the same sign as the DMI at a Pt/Co interface.

We report on the impact of nonlinear four-magnon scattering on magnon transport in microstructured Co(25)Fe(75) waveguides with low magnetic damping. We determine the magnon propagation length with microfocused Brillouin light scattering over a broad range of excitation powers and detect a decrease of the attenuation length at high powers. This is consistent with the onset of nonlinear four-magnon scattering. Hence, it is critical to stay in the linear regime, when deriving damping parameters from the magnon propagation length. Otherwise, the intrinsic nonlinearity of magnetization dynamics may lead to a misinterpretation of magnon propagation lengths and, thus, to incorrect values of the magnetic damping of the system.

Skyrmions can be stabilized in magnetic systems with broken inversion symmetry and chiral interactions, such as Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI). Further, compensation of magnetic moments in ferrimagnetic materials can significantly reduce magnetic dipolar interactions, which tend to favor large skyrmions. Tuning DMI is essential to control skyrmion properties, with symmetry breaking at interfaces offering the greatest flexibility. However, in contrast to the ferromagnet case, few studies have investigated interfacial DMI in ferrimagnets. Here we present a systematic study of DMI in ferrimagnetic CoGd films by Brillouin light scattering. We demonstrate the ability to control DMI by the CoGd cap layer composition, the stack symmetry and the ferrimagnetic layer thickness. The DMI thickness dependence confirms its interfacial nature. In addition, magnetic force microscopy reveals the ability to tune DMI in a range that stabilizes sub-100 nm skyrmions at room temperature in zero field. Our work opens new paths for controlling interfacial DMI in ferrimagnets to nucleate and manipulate skyrmions.

We demonstrate that both the magnitude and sign of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can be tuned by modifying the type and thickness of an oxide layer adjacent to a ferromagnet. We focus on $\mathrm{Ti}/\mathrm{Cu}/\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{o}}_{90}\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{e}}_{10}/\mathrm{Ta}({d}_{\mathrm{Ta}})/\mathrm{Oxide}/\mathrm{Ta}$ structures, where the Ta interlayer thickness ${d}_{\mathrm{Ta}}$ ranged from 0 nm to 3 nm, followed by an exposure to oxygen and ``Oxide'' can mean $\mathrm{CoFe}{\mathrm{O}}_{\mathrm{x}}$ and/or $\mathrm{Ta}{\mathrm{O}}_{\mathrm{x}}$. We used Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy to directly determine the volume-averaged Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction from the nonreciprocity of the spin-wave frequency. The magnitude of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, ${D}_{\mathrm{DMI}}$, ranges from $\ensuremath{-}0.17$ to $+0.09(\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02)\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mJ}/{\mathrm{m}}^{2}$, clearly showing a change in both sign and magnitude, with an increase of Ta interlayer thickness. The modification of the oxide interface allows us to systematically change the hybridization of the $3d\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{CoFe}$ orbitals from $3d\ensuremath{-}5d$ to $3d\ensuremath{-}2p$ and analyze the influence on the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Importantly, we can vary the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction while maintaining a relatively small value of the damping parameter.

Femtosecond light pulses can directly and nearly instantaneously manipulate spins in half-metallic Heusler materials., Heusler compounds are exciting materials for future spintronics applications because they display a wide range of tunable electronic and magnetic interactions. Here, we use a femtosecond laser to directly transfer spin polarization from one element to another in a half-metallic Heusler material, Co2MnGe. This spin transfer initiates as soon as light is incident on the material, demonstrating spatial transfer of angular momentum between neighboring atomic sites on time scales < 10 fs. Using ultrafast high harmonic pulses to simultaneously and independently probe the magnetic state of two elements during laser excitation, we find that the magnetization of Co is enhanced, while that of Mn rapidly quenches. Density functional theory calculations show that the optical excitation directly transfers spin from one magnetic sublattice to another through preferred spin-polarized excitation pathways. This direct manipulation of spins via light provides a path toward spintronic devices that can operate on few-femtosecond or faster time scales.

Ultrafast optical pumping of spatially nonuniform magnetic textures is known to induce far-from-equilibrium spin transport effects. Here, we use ultrafast x-ray diffraction with unprecedented dynamic range to study the laser-induced dynamics of labyrinth domain networks in ferromagnetic CoFe/Ni multilayers. We detected azimuthally isotropic, odd order, magnetic diffraction rings up to 5th order. The amplitudes of all three diffraction rings quench to different degrees within 1.6 ps. In addition, all three of the detected diffraction rings both broaden by 15% and radially contract by 6% during the quench process. We are able to rigorously quantify a 31% ultrafast broadening of the domain walls via Fourier analysis of the order-dependent quenching of the three detected diffraction rings. The broadening of the diffraction rings is interpreted as a reduction in the domain coherence length, but the shift in the ring radius, while unambiguous in its occurrence, remains unexplained. In particular, we demonstrate that a radial shift explained by domain wall broadening can be ruled out. With the unprecedented dynamic range of our data, our results provide convincing evidence that labyrinth domain structures are spatially perturbed at ultrafast speeds under far-from-equilibrium conditions, albeit the mechanism inducing the perturbations remains yet to be clarified.

Motivated by the importance of magnetization dynamics in nanomagnets for the development and optimization of magnetic devices and sensors, we measured and modeled spin wave spectra in patterned elliptical nanomagnets. Ferromagnetic resonance spectra for multiple nanomagnets of Ni80Fe20, fabricated by electron-beam lithography to have nominal short-axes of 200 nm or 100 nm, were measured by use of heterodyne magneto-optical microwave microscopy. Scanning electron microscope images taken of the same nanomagnets were used to define element shapes for micromagnetic simulations. The measured spectra show significant differences between nominally identical nanomagnets, which could be only partially attributed to uncontrolled shape variations in the patterning process, as evidenced by the limited agreement between the measured and simulated spectra. Agreement between measurements and simulations was improved by including a zone of reduced magnetization and exchange at the edges of the nanomagnets in the simulations. Our results show that the reduction of shape variations between individual magnetic random-access memory elements can potentially improve their performance. However, unambiguous determination of materials parameters in nanomagnets based on analysis and modeling of spin wave spectra remains problematic.

We report a large spin Hall effect in the 3

The spin–orbit interaction enables interconversion between a charge current and a spin current. It is usually believed that in a nonmagnetic metal (NM) or at a NM/ferromagnetic metal (FM) bilayer interface, the symmetry of spin–orbit effects requires that the spin current, charge current, and spin orientation are all orthogonal to each other. Here we demonstrate the presence of spin–orbit effects near the NM/FM interface that exhibit a very different symmetry, hereafter referred to as spin-rotation symmetry, from the conventional spin Hall effect while the spin polarization is rotating about the magnetization. These results imply that a perpendicularly polarized spin current can be generated with an in-plane charge current simply by use of a FM/NM bilayer with magnetization collinear to the charge current. The ability to generate a spin current with arbitrary polarization using typical magnetic materials will benefit the development of magnetic memories., Converting charge to spin currents using spin–orbit interactions has useful applications in spintronics but symmetry constraints can limit the control over spin polarization. Here the authors demonstrate spin–orbit effects with a different symmetry, which could help generate arbitrary spin polarizations.

We report a large spin Hall effect in the $3d$ transition metal alloy $\mathrm{N}{\mathrm{i}}_{x}\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{u}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$ for $x\ensuremath{\in}{0.3,0.75}$, detected via the ferromagnetic resonance of a permalloy ($\mathrm{Py}=\mathrm{N}{\mathrm{i}}_{80}\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{e}}_{20}$) film deposited in a bilayer with the alloy. A thickness series at $x=0.6$, for which the alloy is paramagnetic at room temperature, allows us to determine the spin Hall ratio ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\mathrm{SH}}\ensuremath{\approx}1,$ spin diffusion length ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{\mathrm{s}}$, spin mixing conductance ${G}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}\ensuremath{\downarrow}}^{}$, and damping due to spin memory loss ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{SML}}$. We compare our results with similar experiments on Py/Pt bilayers measured using the same method. Ab initio band structure calculations with disorder and spin-orbit coupling suggest an intrinsic spin Hall effect in $\mathrm{N}{\mathrm{i}}_{x}\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{u}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$ alloys, although the experiments here cannot distinguish between extrinsic and intrinsic mechanisms.

The angular momentum of light is present in two different forms: spin angular momentum (SAM), related to the field's polarization, and orbital angular momentum (OAM), associated with the spatial profile of the phase of the electromagnetic wave. While these properties have been long studied and exploited in the visible/infrared regions, recent developments have extended SAM [1,2] and OAM [3,4] control into the EUV/soft x-ray regions. However, to date it has not been possible to generate coherent EUV beams with fully controlled SAM and OAM.

High-efficiency magnetic materials are important for a wide variety of applications, including digital memory and data storage technology, and microwave devices. Obtaining low loss in ferromagnetic metals is especially challenging, due to electron-magnon coupling and nonlocal relaxation channels in the multilayered stacks required for technology integration. This study reveals that scalable, industry-standard deposition techniques can be employed to achieve significant reduction in the loss of Co-Fe alloy by varying the growth conditions and multilayer design. This result paves the way to next-generation devices coupling magnon propagation with spin-dependent transport.

We report on the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DMI) interaction at the interface between a ferromagnet and an oxide. We demonstrate experimentally that oxides can give rise to DMI. By comparison of systems comprised of $\mathrm{Pt}/\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{o}}_{90}\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{e}}_{10}$/oxide and $\mathrm{Cu}/\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{o}}_{90}\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{e}}_{10}$/oxide, we also show how oxidation of one interface can enhance and add to the total DMI of that generated by the Pt interface. This is due to the fact that the DMI on both interfaces promotes left-handed chirality. Finally, by use of ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we show that the DMI and the spectroscopic splitting factor, which is a measure of the orbital momentum, are correlated. This indicates the importance of hybridization and charge transfer at the oxide interface for the DMI.

Extreme-ultraviolet, attosecond beams with custom spin and orbital angular momentum are produced via high-harmonic generation, for the first time. Entwined angular momentum conservation rules yield exquisite control over their polarization, divergence, and vortex charge.

We report ultra-low intrinsic magnetic damping in Co$_{\text{25}}$Fe$_{\text{75}}$ heterostructures, reaching the low $10^{-4}$ regime at room temperature. By using a broadband ferromagnetic resonance technique, we extracted the dynamic magnetic properties of several Co$_{\text{25}}$Fe$_{\text{75}}$-based heterostructures with varying ferromagnetic layer thickness. By estimating the eddy current contribution to damping, measuring radiative damping and spin pumping effects, we found the intrinsic damping of a 26\,nm thick sample to be $$\alpha_{\mathrm{0}} \lesssim 3.18\times10^{-4}$. Furthermore, using Brillouin light scattering microscopy we measured spin-wave propagation lengths of up to $(21\pm1)\,\mathrm{\mu m}$ in a 26 nm thick Co$_{\text{25}}$Fe$_{\text{75}}$ heterostructure at room temperature, which is in excellent agreement with the measured damping., Comment: Updated Version

We characterize asymmetric growth of magnetic bubble domains in perpendicularly magnetized Co/Ni multilayers grown on ${\mathrm{Pt}}_{x}{\mathrm{Ir}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$ seed layers by application of perpendicular and in-plane magnetic fields. Using a refined model of domain wall creep that incorporates contributions from the anisotropic elastic energy, $\ensuremath{\varepsilon}$, and a chirality-dependent prefactor, ${v}_{0}$, we elucidate factors that govern the mobility of Dzyaloshinskii domain walls as a function of seed-layer composition. The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) magnitude is found to decrease monotonically with ${x}_{Ir}$, which is independently confirmed by Brillouin light scattering. Moreover, the persistence of significant asymmetry in velocity curves across the full composition range supports previous assertions that a chirality-dependent attempt frequency akin to chiral damping could play a critical role in the observed trends. This work helps resolve fundamental questions about the factors governing Dzyaloshinskii domain-wall creep and demonstrates varying Pt-Ir seed-layer composition as a method to tune DMI.

Physical review letters 120(9), 093002 (2018). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.120.093002, Recent advances in high-order harmonic generation have made it possible to use a tabletop-scale setup to produce spatially and temporally coherent beams of light with bandwidth spanning 12 octaves, from the ultraviolet up to x-ray photon energies >1.6 keV. Here we demonstrate the use of this light for x-ray-absorption spectroscopy at the K- and L-absorption edges of solids at photon energies near 1 keV. We also report x-ray-absorption spectroscopy in the water window spectral region (284–543 eV) using a high flux high-order harmonic generation x-ray supercontinuum with 10$^9$ photon/s=s in 1% bandwidth, 3 orders of magnitude larger than has previously been possible using tabletop sources. Since this x-ray radiation emerges as a single attosecond-to-femtosecond pulse with peak brightness exceeding 10$^{26}$ photon$/s/mrad^{2}/mm^{2}/1$% bandwidth, these novel coherent x-ray sources are ideal for probingthe fastest molecular and materials processes on femtosecond-to-attosecond time scales and picometer length scales., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

Antiferromagnetic materials present us with rich and exciting physics, which we can exploit to open new avenues in spintronic device applications. We explore perpendicularly magnetized exchange biased systems of Pt/Co/IrMn and Pt/Co/FeMn, where the crossover from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic behavior in the IrMn and FeMn layers is accessed by varying the thickness. We demonstrate, through magneto-optical imaging, that the magnetic domain morphology of the ferromagnetic Co layer is influenced by the N${\'e}$el order of the antiferromagnet (AFM) layers. We relate these variations to the anisotropy energy of the AFM layer and the ferromagnet-antiferromagnet (FM-AFM) inter-layer exchange coupling. We also quantify the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in these systems by Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. The DMI remains unchanged, within experimental uncertainty, for different phases of the AFM layers, which allows us to conclude that the DMI is largely insensitive to both AFM spin order and exchange bias. Understanding such fundamental mechanisms is crucial for the development of future devices employing chiral spin textures, such as N${\'e}$el domain walls and skyrmions, in FM-AFM heterostructures.
