Target audience analysis (TAA) is an essential part of any influence operation. To convey a change in behaviour, the overall target population is systematically segmented into target audiences (TAs) according to their expected responsiveness to different types of influence and messages, as well as their expected ability to behave in a desired way. The cyber domain poses a challenge to traditional TAA methods. Firstly, it is vast, complex and boundless, requiring effective algorithms to filter out relevant information within a meaningful timeframe. Secondly, it is constantly changing, representing a meshwork in formation, rather than a stable collection of TAA-specific data. The third challenge is that the TA consists not of people but of digital representations of individuals and groups, whose true identity, characteristics or location cannot usually be verified. To address these challenges, the authors of this chapter suggest that the concept of TAA has to be revised for use in the cyber domain. Instead of trying to analyze physical people through the cyber interface, the authors have conceptualized an abstract entity whose physical identity might not be known but whose behavioural patterns can be observed in the cyber environment. These cyber personalities (some of which can be artificial in nature) construct and share their honest interpretation of reality, as well as their carefully planned narratives in the digital environment. From the viewpoint of TAA, the only relevant quality of these entities is their potential ability to contribute to the objectives of an influence operation. As a first step, this chapter examines the cyber domain through a five-layer structure and looks at what TAA-relevant data are available for analysis. The authors also suggest a way of analyzing cyber personalities and their networks within adaptive TAs, to conduct a TAA that more effectively supports influence operations in the cyber domain.

In this case study, hospital workers did suffer from symptoms related to the poor indoor air quality. To investigate reasons for symptoms MM40-survey and house inspection methods were performed. The study consisted of 49 operating rooms and 470 employees. MM-40 survey revealed that over 40% of the staff suffered from skin reactions, over 50% had upper respiratory tract symptoms and 25% suffered headaches. No reason for the staff's symptom could be found in the structural studies of workplaces. The mean air exchange rate of the rooms was 5.51/h. In total 61 materials and 49 indoor air samples were taken. The most frequently found compounds in the material samples were 2-ethyl-1-hexanol and aliphatic hydrocarbons. VOC emissions were high in some of the material samples and they presumably were the one reason for the workers' symptoms observed in some in of the rooms. However, indoor air VOC concentrations were low in most of the cases. According to the linear regression model emissions from flooring material couldn't explain the indoor air concentration of the VOCs. One reason for that was the high ventilation rates of the rooms, which presumably kept VOC levels in indoors low. In addition, VOC concentrations indoors were strongly related to the ongoing healthcare activities in the hospital.

The lattice Boltzmann method is increasingly utilized in the simulation of flow-induced wall shear stress needed in various applications. In image-based flow simulations, the simulation geometry is usually based on a three-dimensional reconstruction of the true structure of the pore space obtained, for example, by X-ray tomography. The geometry is then given in a voxel-based representation, which complicates an accurate determination of the surface-normal vectors that are necessary in the computation of the wall shear stress. To avoid this problem, we introduce here a method for the determination of surface-normal vectors directly from a greyscale image instead of its segmented binary image version. The proposed method is fast and automatic, and it can be used for an arbitrary pore space geometry provided in a greyscale form by any imaging modality. We show that this method can produce accurate surface-normal vectors even for binary images and that their accuracy is further increased when the original greyscale images are used instead. We compute wall shear stresses for generated benchmark geometries and then demonstrate the utility of the method for soil samples with ‘random’ pores imaged by X-ray tomography.

Transport and retardation of cesium in Grimsel granodiorite taking into account heterogeneity of mineral and pore structure was studied using rock samples overcored from an in situ diffusion test at the Grimsel Test Site. The field test was part of the Long-term Diffusion project (LTD) designed to characterize retardation properties (diffusion and distribution coefficients) under in situ conditions. Results of the LTD experiment for cesium showed that in-diffusion profiles and spatial concentration distributions were strongly influenced by the heterogeneous pore structure and mineral distribution. In order to study the effect of heterogeneity on the in-diffusion profile and spatial concentration distribution, a Time Domain Random Walk (TDRW) method was applied along with a feature for modeling chemical sorption in geological materials. A heterogeneous mineral structure of Grimsel granodiorite was constructed using X-ray micro computed tomography (X-μCT) and the map was linked to previous results for mineral specific porosities and distribution coefficients (Kd) that were determined using C-14-PMMA autoradiography and batch sorption experiments, respectively. After this the heterogeneous structure contains information on local porosity and Kd in 3D. It was found that the heterogeneity of the mineral structure on the micrometer scale affects significantly the diffusion and sorption of cesium in Grimsel granodiorite at the centimeter scale. Furthermore, the modeled in-diffusion profiles and spatial concentration distributions show similar shape and pattern to those from the LTD experiment. It was concluded that the use of detailed structure characterization and quantitative data on heterogeneity can significantly improve the interpretation and evaluation of transport experiments.

We set out to study connected porosity of crystalline rock using X-ray microtomography and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) with caesium chloride as a contrast agent. Caesium is an important radionuclide regarding the final deposition of nuclear waste and also forms dense phases that can be readily distinguished by X-ray microtomography and SEM-EDS. Six samples from two sites, Olkiluoto (Finland) and Grimsel (Switzerland), where transport properties of crystalline rock are being studied in situ, were investigated using X-ray microtomography and SEM-EDS. The samples were imaged with X-ray microtomography, immersed in a saturated caesium chloride (CsCl) solution for 141, 249 and 365 days and imaged again with X-ray microtomography. CsCl inside the samples was successfully detected with X-ray microtomography and it had completely penetrated all six samples. SEM-EDS elemental mapping was used to study the location of caesium in the samples in detail with quantitative mineral information. Precipitated CsCl was found in the connected pore space in Olkiluoto veined gneiss and in lesser amounts in Grimsel granodiorite. Only a very small amount of precipitated CsCl was observed in the Grimsel granodiorite samples. In Olkiluoto veined gneiss caesium was found in pinitised areas of cordierite grains. In the pinitised areas caesium was found in notable excess compared to chloride, possibly due to the combination of small pore size and negatively charged surfaces. In addition, elevated concentrations of caesium were found in kaolinite and sphalerite phases. The findings concerning the location of CsCl were congruent with X-ray microtomography.

A Kozeny–Carman-based model of permeability for fibrous networks is proposed: the original model is extended by incorporating information about the local structure of the void space. Furthermore, it is demonstrated how in practice this added structural information can be retrieved from a three-dimensional digital image of a fibrous material. The proposed model is then validated for both foam- and water-deposited laboratory sheets of bleached kraft pulp (Scots pine) and chemi-thermo-mechanical pulp (CTMP, Norway spruce). The validation is carried out by comparing the model predictions against computationally determined permeability values. The related fluid-flow simulations are executed using the lattice-Boltzmann method together with high-resolution X-ray microtomography images. For both pulp materials, the sample sets had nearly equal porosities, but deviated substantially in their permeabilities. The proposed model was shown to improve prediction of permeability for the fibrous materials considered: the deviation between the predicted and computationally determined values was no more than 8%.

The MPI intercommunication framework was used for coupling of two lattice-Boltzmann solvers with suspended particles, which model advection and diffusion respectively of these particles in a carrier fluid. Simulation domain was divided into two parts, one with advection and diffusion, and the other with diffusion only (no macroscopic flow). Particles were exchanged between these domains at their common boundary by a direct process to process communication. By analysing weak and strong scaling, it was shown that the linear scaling characteristics of the lattice-Boltzmann solvers were not compromised by their coupling.

The Finnish plan for the final deposition of nuclear waste is deposition deep in the crystalline bedrock. In the safety case of the final deposition, matrix diffusion, along with sorption, is considered the most important retarding factor for radionuclide transport in the geosphere. We set out to measure matrix diffusion in the gas phase for two 80 cm long drill-core samples from Olkiluoto, Finland. One sample consisted of veined gneiss and the other of pegmatitic granite. The measurements were taken in the laboratory with an advection–diffusion measurement setup that uses nitrogen as the carrier gas and helium as the tracer. The measured breakthrough curve for the veined gneiss sample could be interpreted with a homogeneous mathematical model, and the result for the effective diffusion coefficient (\(D_{\mathrm{e}}\)), \(4.2 \pm 0.9 \times 10^{-10}\,\frac{\mathrm {m}^2}{\mathrm {s}}\), agreed with previous results for veined gneiss from through-diffusion experiments in the gas phase. The breakthrough curve for the pegmatitic granite sample required a three-component model because of high variations in the local transport parameters (porosity, diffusion coefficient). The spatial distributions of porosities were characterized with the \(^{14}\)C-polymethylmethacrylate-autoradiography technique. The result, \(D_{\mathrm{e}} = \left( 32 \pm 7\right) \times 10^{-10}\,\frac{\mathrm {m}^2}{\mathrm {s}}\), for the most abundant component was also in accordance with the previous through-diffusion results. Comparison of the two measurements showed that diffusion phenomena can be very sensitive to the microstructure of rock even when macroscopic properties such as porosity remain the same. The retarding effect of matrix diffusion from flow was clearly observed for both samples, and knowledge of the sample structure, rock types, and mineralogy were concluded to be vital in analyzing and interpreting the results.

Recent developments in making fibre materials using the foam-forming technology have raised a need to characterize the porous structure at low material density. In order to find an effective choice among all structure-characterization methods, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional techniques were used to explore the porous structure of foam-formed samples made with two different types of cellulose fibre. These techniques included X-ray microtomography, scanning electron microscopy, light microscopy, direct surface imaging using a CCD camera and mercury intrusion porosimetry. The mean pore radius for a varying type of fibre and for varying foam properties was described similarly by all imaging methods. X-ray microtomography provided the most extensive information about the sheet structure, and showed more pronounced effects of varying foam properties than the two-dimensional imaging techniques. The two-dimensional methods slightly underestimated the mean pore size of samples containing stiff CTMP fibres with void radii exceeding 100 μm, and overestimated the pore size for the samples containing flexible kraft fibres with all void radii below 100 μm. The direct rapid surface imaging with a CCD camera showed surprisingly strong agreement with the other imaging techniques. Mercury intrusion porosimetry was able to characterize pore sizes also in the submicron region and led to an increased relative volume of the pores in the range of the mean bubble size of the foam. This may be related to the penetration channels created by the foam-fibre interaction.

The association of host histones with parvoviral DNA is poorly understood. We analyzed the chromatinization and histone acetylation of canine parvovirus DNA during infection by confocal imaging and in situ proximity ligation assay combined with chromatin immunoprecipitation and high-throughput sequencing. We found that during late infection, parvovirus replication bodies were rich in histones bearing modifications characteristic of transcriptionally active chromatin, i.e., histone H3 lysine 27 acetylation (H3K27ac). H3K27ac, in particular, was located in close proximity to the viral DNA-binding protein NS1. Importantly, our results show for the first time that in the chromatinized parvoviral genome, the two viral promoters in particular were rich in H3K27ac. Histone acetyltransferase (HAT) inhibitors efficiently interfered with the expression of viral proteins and infection progress. Altogether, our data suggest that the acetylation of histones on parvoviral DNA is essential for viral gene expression and the completion of the viral life cycle. IMPORTANCE Viral DNA introduced into cell nuclei is exposed to cellular responses to foreign DNA, including chromatinization and epigenetic silencing, both of which determine the outcome of infection. How the incoming parvovirus resists cellular epigenetic downregulation of its genes is not understood. Here, the critical role of epigenetic modifications in the regulation of parvovirus infection was demonstrated. We showed for the first time that a successful parvovirus infection is characterized by the deposition of nucleosomes with active histone acetylation on the viral promoter areas. The results provide new insights into the regulation of parvoviral gene expression, which is an important aspect of the development of parvovirus-based virotherapy.

Properties of porous materials, abundant both in nature and industry, have broad influences on societies via, e.g. oil recovery, erosion, and propagation of pollutants. The internal structure of many porous materials involves multiple scales which hinders research on the relation between structure and transport properties: typically laboratory experiments cannot distinguish contributions from individual scales while computer simulations cannot capture multiple scales due to limited capabilities. Thus the question arises how large domain sizes can in fact be simulated with modern computers. This question is here addressed using a realistic test case; it is demonstrated that current computing capabilities allow the direct pore-scale simulation of fluid flow in porous materials using system sizes far beyond what has been previously reported. The achieved system sizes allow the closing of some particular scale gaps in, e.g. soil and petroleum rock research. Specifically, a full steady-state fluid flow simulation in a porous material, represented with an unprecedented resolution for the given sample size, is reported: the simulation is executed on a CPU-based supercomputer and the 3D geometry involves 16,384 3 lattice cells (around 590 billion of them are pore sites). Using half of this sample in a benchmark simulation on a GPU-based system, a sustained computational performance of 1.77 PFLOPS is observed. These advances expose new opportunities in porous materials research. The implementation techniques here utilized are standard except for the tailored high-performance data layouts as well as the indirect addressing scheme with a low memory overhead and the truly asynchronous data communication scheme in the case of CPU and GPU code versions, respectively.

We report here a multipurpose dynamic-interface-based segmentation tool, suitable for segmenting planar, cylindrical, and spherical surfaces in 3D. The method is fast enough to be used conveniently even for large images. Its implementation is straightforward and can be easily realized in many environments. Its memory consumption is low, and the set of parameters is small and easy to understand. The method is based on the Edwards-Wilkinson equation, which is traditionally used to model the equilibrium fluctuations of a propagating interface under the influence of temporally and spatially varying noise. We report here an adaptation of this equation into multidimensional image segmentation, and its efficient discretization.

a b s t r a c t A discrete-element model was developed to study the behavior of viscoelastic materials that are allowed to fracture. Applicable to many materials, the main objective of this analysis was to develop a model specifically for ice dynamics. A realistic model of glacial ice must include elasticity, brittle fracture and slow viscous deformations. Here the model is described in detail and tested with several benchmark simulations. The model was used to simulate various ice-specific applications with resulting flow rates that were compatible with Glen's law, and produced under fragmentation fragment-size distributions that agreed with the known analytical and experimental results.

Fiber networks can be formed using aqueous foam as the suspending medium. The mean bubble size of the foam affects the resulting pore-size distribution of the fiber network. The foam–fiber interactions cause in particular an increase in the proportion of large micropores of the network, in comparison with the fiber networks that result from traditional water forming at a similar material density. Experiments were carried out for two different types of cellulose fiber, and characterization of the resulting pore structure was based on X-ray microtomography of the resulting fiber networks. The unique pore structure obtained with foam forming was reflected in various macroscopic properties of the networks, which provides an intriguing opportunity to control the material properties of fiber networks via the selection of their forming.

The Finnish plan for final disposal of nuclear waste is an underground repository in crystalline bedrock in Olkiluoto. In the safety analysis of the repository, it is vital to know the transport properties of the bedrock. We set out to investigate these properties by measuring porosities of rock samples with Ar-gas pycnometry and diffusion coefficients and permeabilities of the same samples with a He-gas method. Diffusion of gases is about 10,000 times faster than diffusion of elements in water, and thus the gas methods are practical tools when determining the properties of relatively tight samples. The porosities were 0.44–0.63 % for pegmatitic granite (three samples) and 0.19–2.9 % for veined gneiss (15 samples). The effective diffusion coefficients were \( 3.2 \times 10^{-9}\)–\(8.2 \times 10^{-9}\,{\mathrm {m}}^2/{\mathrm {s}} \) for pegmatitic granite and \( 5.0 \times 10^{-10}\)–\(6.7 \times 10^{-9}\,{\mathrm {m}}^2/{\mathrm {s}} \) for veined gneiss and the permeabilities \( 5.9\,\times 10^{-19}\)–\(6.4 \times 10^{-18}\,{\mathrm {m}}^2 \) and \( 1.4 \times 10^{-20}\)–\(8.6 \times 10^{-17}\,{\mathrm {m}}^2 \) for the same rock types, respectively. We also investigated the dependences of said properties of one another, and found a correlation between effective diffusion coefficient and permeability.

Adsorption and desorption (together called sorption) processes in sampling tubes and filters of eddy-covariance stations cause attenuation and delay of water vapor signals, leading to an underestimation of water vapor fluxes by tens of percent. The aim of this work was (i) to quantify the effects on sorption in filters and tubes of humidity, flow rate, and dirtiness and (ii) to test a recently introduced sorption model that facilitates correction of fluxes. Laboratory measurements on the transport of water vapor pulses through tubes and filters were carried out, and eddy-covariance field measurements were also used.In the laboratory measurements, the effects of sorption processes were evident, and filters caused a similar attenuation and delay of the signal as tubes. Filters could have a larger impact than a long tube, whereas the flow rate had a much smaller impact on the flux loss than the sorption processes (Reynolds numbers 2120–3360). The sorption model represented well the water vapor pulses in a wide range of conditions. As for the field measurements, the transfer function (TF) derived from the sorption model represented well the observations. Fitting parameters were found to depend strongly on the relative humidity and correlate with the signal delay. Having a more complex shape, TF of the sorption model represented much better the measured TFs than, for example, a Lorentzian or adjusted Gaussian TF, leading on average to a 4% unit difference in the flux corrections. Use of this more complex TF is recommended and its implementation is assisted by the codes provided in appendix B.

Various types of DNA viruses are known to elicit the formation of a large nuclear viral replication compartment and marginalization of the cell chromatin. We used three-dimensional soft x-ray tomography, confocal and electron microscopy, combined with numerical modelling of capsid diffusion to analyse the molecular organization of chromatin in herpes simplex virus 1 infection and its effect on the transport of progeny viral capsids to the nuclear envelope. Our data showed that the formation of the viral replication compartment at late infection resulted in the enrichment of heterochromatin in the nuclear periphery accompanied by the compaction of chromatin. Random walk modelling of herpes simplex virus 1–sized particles in a three-dimensional soft x-ray tomography reconstruction of an infected cell nucleus demonstrated that the peripheral, compacted chromatin restricts viral capsid diffusion, but due to interchromatin channels capsids are able to reach the nuclear envelope, the site of their nuclear egress., published version, peerReviewed

International audience; Abstract Within the framework of geological repositories for radioactive waste, structural concretes must be adapted to the underground chemical conditions. CEM I cement-based materials are characterised by high pH that may produce an alkaline plume in the near-field of the repository. In order to avoid this problem, low-pH cements have been designed. This study compares the physico-chemical behaviour of a low-pH material with a CEM I cement paste, both being subjected to leaching by an aqueous solution. An original experimental setup was designed to reproduce the underground conditions using a specific CO2 regulation device. Under these conditions, the low-pH material was strongly degraded, which results in coarser porosity, whereas thickness degradation of the CEM I cement paste is limited by the precipitation of a magnesium-calcite crust over the surface, which reduces the exchange of soluble species. This paper also presents a new approach for microstructure characterisation based on high-resolution X-ray microtomography.

In this scale-up study, we examined the effects of using varying amounts of fibers with reduced xylan content in paper. Bleached birch kraft pulp was partially or fully replaced by alkali-extracted pulp, and the effects of this replacement on the wet end chemistry of the paper machine and the resulting paper properties were determined. Our results show that paper properties can be maintained or improved when optimizing the partial replacement of bleached birch kraft pulp with alkali-extracted pulp. The incorporation of alkali-extracted pulp in paper machine stock had a positive effect on first pass retention and retention of chemicals. However, careful optimization of chemical dosages is required because of the altered charge balance in the wet end.

The objective of this work was to study stability of walking over a range of gait speeds by means of muscle-driven simulations. Fast walking has previously been related to high likelihood of falling due to tripping. Various measures of stability have shown different relationships between walking speed and stability. These measures may not be associated with tripping, so it is unclear whether the increase in likelihood of falling is explicable by an increase in instability. Here, stability with respect to a constant tripping perturbation was quantified as the immediate passive response of torso to the perturbation. Subject-specific muscle-driven simulations of eight young healthy subjects walking at four speeds, created by combining a generic musculoskeletal model with gait data, were analyzed. In the simulations, short perturbations were performed several times throughout the swing-phase by applying a constant backward force to the swing-foot of the model. Maxima of changes in the torso (angular) velocity components during the swing-phase were studied. The two-dimensional directed sandpile with dissipation is transformed into a (1+1)-dimensional problem with discrete space and continuous “time”. The master equation for the conditional probability that K grains preserve their initial order during an avalanche is solved exactly. Explicit expressions for asymptotic forms of solutions are given for the cases of the infinite and semi-infinite lattices. A nontrivial scaling is found in both cases. Bibliography: 27 titles.

The fundamental flexural guided wave (FFGW), as modeled, for example, by the A0 Lamb mode, is a clinically useful indicator of cortical bone thickness. In the work described in this article, we tested so-called multiridge-based analysis, based on the crazy climber algorithm and short-time Fourier transform, for assessment of the FFGW component recorded by a clinical array transducer featuring a limited number of elements. Methods included numerical finite-element simulations and experiments in bone phantoms and human radius specimens ( n = 41). The proposed approach enabled extraction of the FFGW component and determination of its group velocity. This group velocity was in good agreement with theoretical predictions and possessed reasonable sensitivity to cortical width ( r 2 = 0.51, p in vitro experiments. It is expected that the proposed approach enables related clinical application. Further work is still needed to analyze in more detail the challenges related to the impact of the overlying soft tissue.

Lytic infection with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) induces profound modification of the cell nucleus including formation of a viral replication compartment and chromatin marginalization into the nuclear periphery. We used three-dimensional soft X-ray tomography, combined with cryogenic fluorescence, confocal and electron microscopy, to analyse the transformation of peripheral chromatin during HSV-1 infection. Our data showed an increased presence of low-density gaps in the marginalized chromatin at late infection. Advanced data analysis indicated the formation of virus-nucleocapsid-sized (or wider) channels extending through the compacted chromatin of the host. Importantly, confocal and electron microscopy analysis showed that these gaps frequently contained viral nucleocapsids. These results demonstrated that HSV-1 infection induces the formation of channels penetrating the compacted layer of cellular chromatin and allowing for the passage of progeny viruses to the nuclear envelope, their site of nuclear egress.

The fundamental flexural guided wave (FFGW) permits ultrasonic assessment of the wall thickness of solid waveguides, such as tubes or, e.g., long cortical bones. Recently, an optical non-contact method was proposed for ultrasound excitation and detection with the aim of facilitating the FFGW reception by suppressing the interfering modes from the soft coating. This technique suffers from low SNR and requires iterative physical scanning across the source-receiver distance for 2D-FFT analysis. This means that SNR improvement achieved by temporal averaging becomes time-consuming (several minutes) which reduces the applicability of the technique, especially in time-critical applications such as clinical quantitative ultrasound. To achieve sufficient SNR faster, an ultrasonic excitation by a base-sequence-modulated Golay code (BSGC, 64-bit code pair) on coated tube samples (1-5 mm wall thickness and 5 mm soft coating layer) was used. This approach improved SNR by 21 dB and speeded up the measurement by a factor of 100 compared to using a classical pulse excitation with temporal averaging. The measurement now took seconds instead of minutes, while the ability to determine the wall thickness of the phantoms was maintained. The technique thus allows rapid noncontacting assessment of the wall thickness in coated solid tubes, such as the human bone. (C) 2016 Author(s). From macroscopic to microscopic scales it is demonstrated that diffusion through membranes can be modeled using specific boundary conditions across them. The membranes are here considered thin in comparison to the overall size of the system. In a macroscopic scale the membrane is introduced as a transmission boundary condition, which enables an effective modeling of systems that involve multiple scales. In a mesoscopic scale, a numerical lattice-Boltzmann scheme with a partial-bounceback condition at the membrane is proposed and analyzed. It is shown that this mesoscopic approach provides a consistent approximation of the transmission boundary condition. Furthermore, analysis of the mesoscopic scheme gives rise to an expression for the permeability of a thin membrane as a function of a mesoscopic transmission parameter. In a microscopic model, the mean waiting time for a passage of a particle through the membrane is in accordance with this permeability. Numerical results computed with the mesoscopic scheme are then compared successfully with analytical solutions derived in a macroscopic scale, and the membrane model introduced here is used to simulate diffusive transport between the cell nucleus and cytoplasm through the nuclear envelope in a realistic cell model based on fluorescence microscopy data. Raindrops that impact on soil surface affect the pore structure and form compact soil surface seals. Damaged pore structure reduces water infiltration which can lead to increased soil erosion. We introduce here methods to characterize the properties of surface seals in a detailed manner. These methods include rainfall simulations, x-ray microtomography, image analysis and pore-scale flow simulations. Methods were tested using clay soil samples, and the results indicate that the sealing process changes several properties of the pore structure.

There is a wide range of materials that can be considered as nonwoven random networks of fibres. Such materials include glass-fibre mats, filters, various paper products and structural components of cells and tissues. The mechanical properties of these kinds of networks have been studied extensively for many decades. As many of such networks form more or less two-dimensional structures, they can, to a good approximation, be considered to consist of randomly distributed fibres or filaments connected at their crossings points. Recent development of the resolution of X-ray computed tomography have enabled imaging of the three dimensional structure of such materials with a resolution sufficient to produce accurate information of the fibre network. As the mean segment length, for given elastic properties of the fibers and contacts in the network, essentially affects the elastic response of the network, it is a property of great practical importance, but it has been very difficult to determine. We therefore introduce a method to determine in practice the mean segment length along with the density of fiber-fiber contacts.

3D distributions of minerals and porosities were determined for rock-core samples that included water-conducting fractures. The analysis of these samples was performed using conventional petrography methods, C-14-PMMA porosity analysis and X-ray tomography. It seems that the properties of rock around a water-conducting fracture depend on so many uncorrelated factors that no clear pattern emerged even for rock samples with a given type of fracture. We can conclude, however, that the present combination of methods can be used to infer novel structural information about alteration zones adjacent to fracture surfaces.

A model transport system is considered in which a pulse of tracer molecules is advected along a flow channel with porous walls. The advected tracer thus undergoes diffusion, matrix-diffusion, inside the walls, which affects the breakthrough curve of the tracer. Analytical solutions in the form of series expansions are derived for a number of situations which include a finite depth of the porous matrix, varying aperture of the flow channel, and longitudinal diffusion and Taylor dispersion of the tracer in the flow channel. Novel expansions for the Laplace transforms of the concentration in the channel facilitated closed-form expressions for the solutions. A rigorous result is also derived for the asymptotic form of the breakthrough curve for a finite depth of the porous matrix, which is very different from that for an infinite matrix. A specific experimental system was created for validation of matrix-diffusion modeling for a matrix of finite depth. A previously reported fracture-column experiment was also modeled. In both cases model solutions gave excellent fits to the measured breakthrough curves with very consistent values for the diffusion coefficients used as the fitting parameters. The matrix-diffusion modeling performed could thereby be validated.

Axial transmission velocity of a low-frequency first arriving signal (V LF) was assessed in the radius and tibia of 254 females, and compared to site-matched pQCT measurements. V LF best correlated with cortical BMD, but significantly also with subcortical BMD and cortical thickness. Correlations were strongest for the radius in postmenopausal females. Ultrasonic low-frequency (LF; 0.2–0.4 MHz) axial transmission, based on the first arriving signal (FAS), provides enhanced sensitivity to thickness and endosteal properties of cortical wall of the radius and tibia compared to using higher frequencies (e.g., 1 MHz). This improved sensitivity of the LF approach has not yet been clearly confirmed by an in vivo study on adult subjects. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the extent to which LF measurements reflect cortical thickness and bone mineral density, and to assess whether an individual LF measurement can provide a useful estimate for these bone properties. Velocity of the LF FAS (V LF) was assessed in the radius and tibia shaft by a new ultrasonometer (CVRMS = 0.5%) in a cross-sectional study involving 159 premenopausal (20–58 years) and 95 postmenopausal females (45–88 years). Site-matched volumetric total bone mineral density (BMD), cortical bone mineral density (CBMD), subcortical bone mineral density (ScBMD) and cortical thickness (CTh) were assessed using pQCT. Crystalline rock has been chosen as the host medium for repository of highly radioactive spent nuclear fuel in Finland. Radionuclide transport takes place along water-carrying fractures, and matrix diffusion has been indicated as an important retarding mechanism that affects the transport of mobile fission and activation products. The model introduced here for matrix diffusion contains a flow channel facing a porous matrix with stagnant water into which tracer molecules advected in the channel can diffuse. In addition, the possibility of a finite depth of the matrix and an initial tracer distribution (‘contamination’) in the matrix are included in the model. In order to validate the developed matrix diffusion model, a relatively simple measuring system was constructed. Matrix diffusion was illustrated by observing the migration of 0.1 ml KCl pulses in the water flowing through a channel facing a porous matrix made of synthetic fibre felt. Migration of K + and Cl − ions was monitored by measuring the electrical conductivity of the solution. The experimental system allowed also measurements on the concentration profile inside the porous matrix, but the focus is here on the input and output (breakthrough) pulses. Measurements were performed for two different initial distributions of KCl tracer in the porous matrix. There was excellent agreement between modeling and experimental results with consistent values for the diffusion coefficient used as the fitting parameter.

The amount and type of latex binder has a significant effect on both the structure and chemical properties of pigment coatings, which affects critical surface properties, e.g., gloss, ink setting rate via liquid absorption, and spreading properties. Increased knowledge is required for improved optimization in practical applications of pigment coating layers. To this end, the effect of binder amount for two different styrene–butadiene latices in kaolin pigment coatings on a base paper was studied, by measuring the surface topography, surface chemistry, and liquid absorption of these coatings. The topography was thoroughly analyzed from nanometer to millimeter length scales by atomic force microscopy (AFM), confocal optical microscopy (COM), and X-ray tomography. The area fractions of latex and pigments on the surface of the coating were determined from AFM phase contrast images, and the contact angles for pure latex and kaolin fractions were determined by using the Cassie equation. An explicit value for the effective surface area of the coatings was determined from the topographic data, which was used for determining the Wenzel correction for the contact angles. Work of adhesion and surface energy components were determined for the samples using three different methods (Owens–Wendt, Wu, vOCG). The latex was found to be evenly distributed over the surfaces, based on AFM phase imaging and ToF–SIMS mapping. The latex binder amount significantly affected the wetting behavior and interfacial properties of the coating layer. The results of this fundamental study can be used for optimization of functional properties of pigment coating systems by regulation of the amount and properties of their latex binder.

The structural and geometrical properties of the tibia shaft were investigated at two sections by means of computerized tomography (CT) in 78-year-old women with high (n = 19) and low (n = 17) calcaneal bone mineral density (BMD, g/cm3) previously measured by 125I-photon absorption. The high BMD group had a 20-21% higher tibial BMD and 9-12% higher bone cross-sectional area than was observed in the low BMD group. The distribution of bone mass indicated that the low BMD group had lost bone mainly from the endosteal surface, especially in the anterior part of the tibia. However, both groups had a similar basic pattern of mass distribution at the measured sections. The high BMD group had higher moments of inertia at the upper section than the low BMD group. The differences between the groups were more pronounced when only the high density areas were included. At the lower section, the differences between the groups also appeared significant at the high density levels. There were no group differences in the area moments of inertia. The results suggest that the true distribution of bone mass should be taken into account in determining the moments of inertia. In the tibia, determination of the cross-sectional mass distribution of bone combined with BMD should have a better discriminatory capability than BMD only in studying bone strength and fracture risk.

The transient fin model introduced recently for determination of the in-plane thermal diffusivity of planar samples with the help of infrared thermography was modified so as to be applicable to poor heat conductors. The new model now includes a temperature-dependent heat loss by convective heat transfer, suitable for an experimental setup in which the sample is aligned parallel to a weak, forced air flow stabilizing otherwise the convective heat transfer. The temperature field in the sample was measured with an infrared camera while the sample was heated at one edge. The symmetric temperature field created was averaged over the central fifth of the sample to obtain one-dimensional temperature profiles, both transient and stationary, which were fitted by a numerical solution of the fin model. One of the fitting parameters was the thermal diffusivity, and with a known density and specific heat capacity, the thermal conductivity was thus determined. The test measurements with tantalum samples gave the result (57.5 ± 0.2) W · m−1 · K−1 in excellent agreement with the known value. The other fitting parameter was a temperature-dependent heat loss coefficient from which the lower limit for the temperature-dependent convection coefficient was determined. For the stationary state the result was (1.0 ± 0.2) W · m−2 · K−1 at the temperature of the flowing air, and its temperature dependence was found to be (0.22 ± 0.01) W ·m−2 · K−2.

The ultrasonic axial transmission technique has been proposed as a method for cortical bone characterization. Using a low enough center frequency, Lamb modes can be excited in long bones. Lamb waves propagate throughout the cortical bone layer, which makes them appealing for characterizing bone material and geometrical properties. In the present study, a prototype low-frequency quantitative ultrasonic axial transmission device was used on elderly women (n = 132) to investigate the relationships between upper femur geometry and bone mineral density (BMD) and tibial speed of sound. Ultrasonic velocities (V) were recorded using a two-directional measurement set-up on the midtibia and compared with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry measurements and plain radiographs of the hip. Statistically significant, but weak, correlations were found between V and femoral shaft cortex thickness measured from radiographs (r = 0.20-0.26). V also correlated significantly with various BMD and bone mineral content parameters (r = 0.20-0.35). Femoral BMD and geometry were found to be significant independent predictors of V (R(2) = 0.07-0.16, p < 0.01). This study showed that femoral geometry and BMD affect significantly the axial ultrasound velocity measured at the tibia. In addition, the results confirmed, for the first time, a relationship between tibial ultrasound velocity and cortical bone thickness at the proximal femur.

Forced crumpling of stiff self-avoiding sheets is studied by discrete element simulations. Simulations display stress condensation and scaling of ridge energy in agreement with theoretical expectations for elastic and frictionless sheets, and extends such behavior to elasto-plastic sheets. Crumpling of ideally elastic and frictionless sheets is compared to that of elasto-plastic sheets and sheets with friction.

Bridging the gap between theoretical and experimental work to understand the effect of plasticity on the crumpling of thin sheets into a small volume has proved difficult. A realistic numerical model now makes a distinction between elastic and elasto-plastic behaviour. Crumpling a thin sheet of material into a small volume requires energy for creating a network of deformations such as vertices and ridges1,2. Scaling properties of a single elastic vertex3,4,5 or ridge have been analysed theoretically6,7,8, and crumpling of a sheet by numerical simulations1,9,10. Real materials are however elasto-plastic11,12,13,14,15 and large local strains induce irreversible plastic deformations. Hence, a numerical model that can be purely elastic or elasto-plastic is introduced. In crumpled elastic sheets, the ridge patterns are found to be similar, independent of the width to thickness (L/h) ratio of the sheet, and the fractal dimension of crumpled sheets is given by scaling properties of the energy and average length of ridges. In crumpled elasto-plastic sheets, such a similarity does not appear as the L/h ratio affects the deformations, and the fractal dimension (Dpl) is thereby reduced. Evidence is also found of Dpl not being universal but dependent on the plastic yield point of the material.

Summary The surface characteristics of a large set of commercial lightweight coated paper grades are explored. The quantification of the 3D structure is revealed by atomic force microscopy, laser profilometry and X-ray microtomography. This comprehensive study demonstrates the suitability of different and modern methods for assessing critical coating layer properties, thus identifying the right tools for specific structural analyses. Based on the assessment of the top and bottom surfaces of 25 commercial lightweight coated samples, three main conclusions can be drawn: (1) the facet orientation polar angle is a function of roughness, (2) skewness did not describe the surface details affecting the gloss of the commercial lightweight coated samples assessed in this study and (3) surface roughness at wavelengths below approximately 1.0 μm does not affect the paper gloss significantly. This is important knowledge for the understanding of lightweight coated paper surface structure and its properties.

Recent in vitro and simulation studies have shown that guided waves measured at low ultrasound frequencies (f=200 kHz) can characterize both material properties and geometry of the cortical bone wall. In particular, a method for an accurate cortical thickness estimation from ultrasound velocity data has been presented. The clinical application remains, however, a challenge as the impact of a layer of soft tissue on top of the bone is not yet well established, and this layer is expected to affect the dispersion and relative intensities of guided modes. The present study is focused on the theoretical modeling of the impact of an overlying soft tissue. A semianalytical method and finite-difference time domain simulations were used. The models developed were shown to predict consistently real in vivo data on human radii. As a conclusion, clinical guided wave data are not consistent with in vitro data or related in vitro models, but use of an adequate in vivo model, such as the one introduced here, is necessary. A theoretical model that accounts for the impact of an overlying soft tissue could thus be used in clinical applications.
