1. Levers of Control, Counterproductive Work Behavior, and Work Performance: Evidence from Indonesian Higher Education Institutions

Abstract

The low academic ranking compared to academicians in other disciplines is a work performance issue encountered by accounting academics, particularly in developing countries such as Indonesia. Besides, executing performance systems as a control mechanism mandated by the government also affected academic counterproductive work behavior (CWB) and performance. However, there is a dearth of empirical verification concerning the connection of control systems to the CWB and the performance of accounting academics. Therefore, building upon the job demands-resources theory, this study examines the association among levers of control as institutional performance mechanisms, CWB, and the work performance of academics. A self-administered online survey was conducted on 238 Indonesian accounting academics. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was utilized to run the analyses. This study's crucial findings depicted the boundaries and interactive control systems as substantial factors to mitigate the tendency of academics to engage in CWB and revealed evidence concerning the negative effect of CWB on work performance. Subsequently, CWB plays a critical role in mediating the positive relationship between those two control systems and performance. The boundaries and interactive levers of control boost performance due to the systems' success in mitigating academics' involvement in CWB. The findings are relevant to higher education top management in aligning management control systems with the proper code of conduct and designing performance systems that enable academic freedom, collegial culture, autonomy, and participation to escalate performance. Shifting the control systems' paradigm toward these characteristics will mitigate academics' CWB and improve their performance.

2. Multi-gated perimeter flow control for monocentric cities: Efficiency and equity

Abstract

A control scheme for the multi-gated perimeter traffic flow control problem of cities is presented. The proposed scheme determines feasible and optimally distributed input flows for the various gates located at the periphery of a protected network. A parsimonious model is employed to describe the traffic dynamics of the protected network. To describe traffic dynamics outside of the protected area, the state-space model is augmented with additional state variables to account for vehicle queues at store-and-forward origin links at the periphery. The perimeter flow control problem is formulated as a convex optimisation problem with finite horizon, and constrained control and state variables. It aims to equalise the relative queues at origin links and to maintain the vehicle accumulation in the protected network around a desired set point, while the system's throughput is maximised. For real-time control, the optimal control problem is embedded in a rolling-horizon scheme using the current state of the system as the initial state as well as predicted demand flows at entrance links. Furthermore, practical flow allocation policies for single-region perimeter control without explicitly considering entrance link dynamics are presented. These policies allocate a global perimeter-ordered flow to candidate gates at the periphery of a protected network by taking into account the different geometric characteristics of origin links. The proposed flow allocation policies are then benchmarked against the multi-gated perimeter flow control. A study is carried out for a 2.5 square mile protected network area of San Francisco, CA, including fifteen gates of different geometric characteristics. The results have showed that the proposed scheme is able to manage excessive queues outside of the protected network and to optimally distribute the input flows, which confirms its efficiency and equity properties., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 3 Tables, Provisionally accepted for publication in Control Engineering Practice

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of bittern coagulant dosage and rapid stirring speed on reducing the concentrations of biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), and dye absorbance in batik industry wastewater, and to identify the optimum coagulant dosage and stirring speed. Wastewater samples were collected from a batik industry in the batik center of Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia. Dosage variations of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% were tested alongside rapid stirring speeds of 100 rpm, 130 rpm, and 160 rpm. The study was conducted on a laboratory scale using the jar test method. Initial wastewater characteristics showed BOD, COD, TSS, and dye absorbance concentrations of 185.68 ± 29.34 mg/L, 10,091 ± 363.24 mg/L, 2,231.33 ± 155.55 mg/L, and 0.212 ± 0.02, respectively. Statistical analysis using the Pearson correlation test and Two-Way ANOVA revealed that variations in coagulant dosage and stirring speed significantly impacted the reduction percentages of BOD, COD, TSS, and dye absorbance. The optimal coagulant dosage was found to be 5%, and the optimal stirring speed was 100 rpm, with reduction percentages for BOD, COD, TSS, and dye absorbance respectively being 80.32%, 65.86%, 92.35%, and 70.77%.

10. The Challenges of Virtual Learning: An Exploratory Study among 'Orang Asli' Pupils from the Mathematics Teachers' Perspectives

Abstract

The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic subsequently led to the digitalization of education, whereby globally virtual learning was implemented to sustain learning. This study aims to explore the challenges faced by Orang Asli pupils when carrying out virtual learning from the mathematics teachers' perspectives. By employing exploratory qualitative research design and purposive sampling, five teacher participants from two schools in two states in Malaysia were selected. Data was collected from two online and face-to-face focus group interviews. Thematic analysis identified four major themes, which are challenges related to language proficiency, logistic, home and classroom. Based on these emergent themes, various stakeholders can focus their efforts to address these challenges to mitigate Orang Asli pupils' potential learning loss in the post-Covid era and thus, ensure they remain abreast to current mathematics learning. Further studies should explore on mobile and modular learning as promising alternatives means of content delivery for their future virtual learning.

15. A catalogue and redescription of type specimens of fireflies (Coleoptera, Lampyridae, Luciolinae) deposited in Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden

Abstract

Type specimens of flashing fireflies (Coleoptera, Lampyridae, Luciolinae) in the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden (RMNH) collection were documented. Specimens explicitly marked or indicated as types belonging to the lucioline fireflies were investigated with each specimen and its accompanying labels photographed, and its morphological characters analysed and compared with the original species description. The genitalia dissections of selected types enabled redescription and clarification of the taxonomic status of seven name-bearing type specimens. This study provides the first redescriptions of holotypes, designation of lectotypes for five species, and confirmation that two of these belong in the genus Luciola s. str. A lectotype and paralectotype were designated for two specimens of Luciola cerea Gorham, 1882 which is confirmed to belong to the genus Curtos Motschulsky, 1845. Atyphella testaceolineata Pic, 1939 was redescribed and figured based on the holotype (an incomplete specimen). We assigned Luciola laticollis Gorham, 1883 and Luciola nicollieri Bugnion, 1922 to Luciola sensu stricto and Luciola picea Gorham, 1882 to species inquirenda. The identity of Pteroptyx decolor Olivier, 1911 is finally confirmed as a close Indonesian relative of Pteroptyx valida Olivier,1909 and a lectotype is designated. In addition, we take the first opportunity to present pictures of the original holotype of Pygoluciola stylifer Wittmer, 1939. We also discuss the challenges taxonomists face in identifying specimens and how detailed dissections allow us to present descriptions of certain male features not previously addressed.

18. What Is Thematic Progression in Students' Essay? Revision of Systemic Literature Review

Abstract

This literature review looked at relevant research articles published in reputable journals from 2018 to 2022 to try to shed light on the areas: (1) Implications of using thematic progression pattern to improve the coherence and unity of student essays; and (2) The effects of thematic problems using the thematic progression approach in the student's essay. Even though thematic progression has been studied a lot, it is still interesting to see how much scholars have looked into it, especially in the context of the second and foreign language. The previous studies had consistently confirmed the following results: (1) thematic progression contributes to the coherence and cohesion quality of student essays; (2) problematic thematic progression in student essays includes the emergence of the brand-new theme, overuse of constant pattern, empty rheme or undeveloped rheme, double rheme, intervening material between rheme, incomplete of the clause, subsequent thematization, confusing selection of textual theme, empty themes, themes with undefined reference and thematization of rheme and lack of thematic progression & loosely thematic flow. For further research, other researcher can make a review article who emphasis on thematic progression in the aspect of various fields, genres of text or non-academic texts produced by students to look the cohesive and coherent aspects of the student's writing.

19. Investigation into Common Errors in English Writing among Non-Academic Staff at a Malaysian Public University

Abstract

The Malaysian government has long recognized the significance of mastering the English language among its citizenry. The government has planned, and subsequently, implemented many policies to ensure Malaysians master the English language. Although civil servants have a strong desire to master the English language to perform their duties more efficiently, poor English communication skills have become a major concern in this regard. Therefore, this research aims to investigate common errors in writing the English language among non-academic staff at "Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin" (UniSZA), a public university in Malaysia. The study employed an Error Analysis approach by conducting document analysis where every respondent was required to write a paragraph in the English language in about 150-200 words on the topic "My greatest challenge as a UniSZA officer". The findings revealed that a sizeable number of non-academic staff committed different types of errors in writing the English language, including errors related to subject-verb agreement, passive voice, plurality, choice of word, omission of word, use of article, tense sequence, word ordering, gerund, addition of word/redundancy, and comparison of adjective. It was observed that lack of linguistic skills, lack of exposure, and inadequate practices in written English were the main factors contributing to the English writing errors among the non-academic staff. These findings could help the university management to develop appropriate programs that can assist the non-academic staff to develop English writing competence. However, this study is limited to English writing errors. Further research may focus on other language skills such as speaking and listening.

Abstract

The traditional cubic B-spline method offers limited local control over the curve solution. Adjusting the position of a control point affects the entire curve, making it challenging to make localized changes, e.g., smoothness. Moreover, the basis functions vanish on one side by the cubic B-spline method near the end conditions where the initial and boundary conditions are applied. To address these limitations, this research proposes a new basis by including a free parameter γ with the purpose of modifying the weights of nearby control points. This free parameter γ can influence the curve’s behavior in specific regions as well as the entire curve. This modification of the cubic B-spline method was used to approximate the second-order derivative at each collocation point. The convergence test showed that the proposed method was second-order convergent. Numerical examples of ordinary differential equations were used with different step values to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed method. The findings persistently indicated that the proposed technique provided better error estimates as compared to the other methods discussed in the literatures.

Abstract

The term 'vulnerable poor' refers to individuals who experience sudden poverty without being adequately prepared to cope with it. This type of poverty can arise from various factors, such as the loss of income due to economic uncertainties stemming from pandemics or disasters. Consequently, there is a pressing need for a sustainable mechanism that addresses this group's social welfare and economic well-being. Establishing a sustainable and comprehensive i-CSR (Islamic Corporate Social Responsibility) mechanism is crucial to achieving these objectives. This initiative aligns with the Value-Based Intermediation (VBI) introduced by Bank Negara to elevate the function and potential of Islamic banking while also supporting the government's goal of eradicating poverty, as outlined in Goal 1 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for 2030. Purpose: To ensure financial sustainability for the vulnerable poor, this study was conducted to explore the CSR mechanisms employed in Islamic banking in Malaysia and to assess the potential of the i-CSR mechanism in facilitating financing for the vulnerable poor from Islamic banks. Design/methodology/approach: This study adopted the exploratory research method, employing interviews and content analysis of previous studies to gain insights into the concepts of CSR and i-CSR. Authoritative informants were interviewed to obtain their perspectives on CSR and i-CSR-related questions, and the collected data were analysed using content analysis techniques. Findings: The findings of this study emphasise that the implementation of a standardised i-CSR mechanism in Islamic banking in Malaysia has the potential to significantly contribute to the attainment of the first agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 namely eradication of poverty. This can be achieved by addressing poverty in its various forms, particularly by empowering the vulnerable poor through increased access to micro-financing opportunities. Research limitations/implications: This research highlights on Qard al-Hasan as a mechanism of i-CSR in Islamic bank. Further research can explore other i-CSR mechanisms to be use by Islamic bank such as Waqf to affectively aiding various segment in the society. Practical implications: The proposed model of Qard al-Hasan can be used by Islamic Financial Institutions as a whole in structuring their i-CSR activities. Abstract

To obtain a better understanding of using Moringa oleifera bark (MOB) as a reinforcement in a silicone matrix, this study aimed to define the mechanical properties of this new material under uniaxial tension. Composite samples of 0 wt%, 4 wt%, 8 wt%, 12 wt%, and 16 wt% MOB powder were produced. The tensile properties were quantified mathematically using the neo-Hookean hyperelastic model. The collected data were employed to establish multiple inputs of an artificial neural network (ANN) to predict its material constant via MATLAB. The result showed that the material constant for the 16 wt% fiber content sample was 63.9% higher than pure silicone. This was supported by the tensile modulus testing, which indicated that the modulus increased as the fiber content increased. However, the elongation ratio (λ) of the MOB-silicone biocomposite decreased slightly compared to the pure silicone. Lastly, the prediction of the material constant using an ANN recorded a 2.03% percentage error, which showed that it was comparable to the mathematical modelling. Therefore, the inclusion of MOB fibers into silicone produced a stiffer material and gradually improved the composite. Furthermore, the network that had multiple inputs (weighting, load, and elongation) was more reliable to produce precise predictions.

Abstract

High-reliability diagnostic equipment efficiently supported by a computer-based diagnostics system. For instance, a computational approach establishes a model that can diagnose diseases. Artificial intelligence has been applied to aid in the field of medical imaging. Classification, prediction, and localisation of lesions or dental caries greatly minimise the load and difficulties for clinical practitioners. In this study, U-Net architectures are simplified to propose the feature reduction of the decoder layers. This simplification of U-Net architectures is utilised for segmented dental caries images. This paper simplified the U-Net decoder layers into the level of blocks Half-UNet () and Half-UNet (). The Half-UNet structural model surpasses the U-shaped structural model in terms of efficiency and segmentation capabilities. The simplification of the UNet architecture outperformed using Half-UNet 0.83% of the dice coefficient. The Half-UNet design is able to preserve model performance in segmenting actual images and ground truth against expected ground truth.

Abstract

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Abstract

The Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams containing Expanded Polystyrene Beads (EPS) and Palm Oil Fuel Ash (POFA) as sand and cement replacement with a percentage between 10% and 30% were studied in terms of load-deflection behaviour. RC beam’s size was 1000×150×150 mm and simply supported at spaced 750 mm apart. The 10% of POFA without EPS shows a slight increase which is 0.26% higher than normal concrete in compressive strength. The ultimate load and flexural performance of RC beams with EPS and POFA exhibited a decreasing trend. All beams’ ultimate load exceeds the design value. The cracks of the RC beam may be classified as vertical flexural cracks, and some of the cracks can be classified as shear cracks based on the crack angle. As the percentage of EPS and POFA increases above 20% for all specimens, cracking starts to change to shear cracking.

Abstract

Purpose: The Malaysian government has allocated a large budget for "Orang Asli" primary school education via the Department of "Orang Asli" Development (JAKOA) to help improve the "Orang Asli" pupils' academic performance and in, Mathematics as well. Teachers face challenges in ensuring that "Orang Asli" pupils become competent learners of mathematics. Hence, there is a need to explore the teachers' perspectives on the teaching and learning of Mathematics in the "Orang Asli" schools. This study examined the teachers' perspectives on the issues and challenges of the teaching and learning of mathematics for the "Orang Asli" primary school pupils in Malaysia. Methodology: In this qualitative study, two "Orang Asli" primary schools were randomly selected from eight primary schools within an "Orang Asli" Settlement in the District of Sungai Siput. The data were collected via focus group discussions and interviews, which were carried out during the enculturation visits and were fully transcribed and thematically analysed. The research participants were purposively selected and comprised the school's administrators and mathematics teachers. Findings: The results of the data analysis show that there are two main themes, namely classroom challenges and school challenges, in determining mathematics competence among "Orang Asli" pupils. Classroom challenges consists of five sub-themes namely coverage of Mathematics syllabus, Mathematics teaching and learning resources, pupil engagement, language barrier, and Mathematics learning culture. School challenges consists of two sub-themes namely school attendance and discipline. To enhance mathematics competence among "Orang Asli" pupils, it is deemed important to implement programmes and community engagement. Significance: This study contributes towards the knowledge of teaching and learning of Mathematics for "Orang Asli" pupils. Teachers are recommended to allow "Orang Asli" pupils to take home their mathematics textbooks so that they can complete their homework at home. Teachers are highly recommended to conduct mathematics teaching and learning activities in groups for meaningful and engaging lessons.
