There are many similarities between the theories of matroids and $q$-matroids. However, when dealing with the direct sum of $q$-matroids many differences arise. Most notably, it has recently been shown that the direct sum of representable $q$-matroids is not necessarily representable. In this work, we focus on the direct sum of uniform $q$-matroids. Using algebraic and geometric tools, together with the notion of cyclic flats of $q$-matroids, we show that this is always representable, by providing a representation over a sufficiently large field.

We consider an autonomous reconnaissance mission where a drone has to visit several points of interest and communicate the intel back to the base. At every point of interest, the drone has the option to either send back all available info, or continue to the next point of interest and communicate at a later stage. Both choices have a chance of detection, meaning the mission fails. We wish to maximize the expected amount of information gathered by the mission. This is modeled by a routing problem in a weighted graph. We discuss the ILP formulation of this problem, show it is NP-complete, and use a genetic algorithm to find good solutions for up to ten points of interest., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures

We define and study q-delta-matroids, and q-g-matroids. These objects are analogues, for finite-dimensional vector spaces over finite fields, of delta-matroids and g-matroids arising from finite sets. We compare axiomatic descriptions with definitions by means of strong maps of q-matroids.

It is well known that in q-matroids, axioms for independent spaces, bases, and spanning spaces differ from the classical case of matroids, since the straightforward q-analogue of the classical axioms does not give a q-matroid. For this reason, a fourth axiom has been proposed. In this paper we show how we can describe these spaces with only three axioms, providing two alternative ways to do that. Let $M$ be an arbitrary matroid with circuits $\mathcal{C}(M)$. We propose a definition of a derived matroid $\delta M$ that has as its ground set $\mathcal{C}(M)$. Unlike previous attempts of such a definition, our definition applies to arbitrary matroids, and is completely combinatorial. We prove that the rank of $\delta M$ is bounded from above by $|M|-r(M)$, that it is connected if and only if $M$ is connected. We compute examples including the derived matroids of uniform matroids, the V\'amos matroid and the graphical matroid $M(K_4)$. For classical matroids, the direct sum is one of the most straightforward methods to make a new matroid out of existing ones. This paper defines a direct sum for $q$-matroids, the $q$-analogue of matroids. This is a lot less straightforward than in the classical case, as we will try to convince the reader. With the use of submodular functions and the $q$-analogue of matroid union we come to a definition of the direct sum of $q$-matroids. As a motivation for this definition, we show it has some desirable properties.

The Assmus-Mattson theorem gives a way to identify block designs arising from codes. This result was broadened to matroids and weighted designs. In this work we present a further two-fold generalisation: first from matroids to polymatroids and also from sets to vector spaces. To achieve this, we introduce the characteristic polynomial of a $q$-polymatroid and outline several of its properties.

In the theory of classical matroids, there are several known equivalent axiomatic systems that define a matroid, which are described as matroid cryptomorphisms. A q-matroid is a q-analogue of a matroid where subspaces play the role of the subsets in the classical theory. In this article we establish cryptomorphisms of q-matroids. In doing so we highlight the difference between classical theory and its q-analogue. We introduce a comprehensive set of q-matroid axiom systems and show cryptomorphisms between them and existing axiom systems of a q-matroid. These axioms are described as the rank, closure, basis, independence, dependence, circuit, hyperplane, flat, open space, spanning space, non-spanning space, and bi-colouring axioms.

A perfect matroid design (PMD) is a matroid whose flats of the same rank all have the same size. In this paper we introduce the q-analogue of a PMD and its properties. In order to do so, we first establish a new cryptomorphic definition for q-matroids. We show that q-Steiner systems are examples of q-PMD's and we use this q-matroid structure to construct subspace designs from q-Steiner systems. We apply this construction to the only known q-Steiner system, which has parameters S(2,3,13;2), and hence establish the existence of a new subspace design with parameters 2-(13,4,5115;2).

This paper contributes to the study of rank-metric codes from an algebraic and combinatorial point of view. We introduce $q$-polymatroids, the $q$-analogue of polymatroids, and develop their basic properties. We associate a pair of q-polymatroids to a rank-metric codes and show that several invariants and structural properties of the code, such as generalized weights, the property of being MRD or an optimal anticode, and duality, are captured by the associated combinatorial object., Comment: Previous version has a typo in M_2 in Example 2.5

$q$-Matroids are defined on complemented modular support lattices. Minors of length 2 are of four types as in a "classical" matroid. Tutte polynomials $\tau(x,y)$ of matroids are calculated either by recursion over deletion/contraction of single elements, by an enumeration of bases with respect to internal/external activities, or by substitution $x \to (x-1),\; y \to (y-1)$ in their rank generating functions $\rho(x,y)$. The $q$-analogue of the passage from a Tutte polynomial to its corresponding RGF is straight-forward, but the analogue of the reverse process $x \to (x-1),\; y \to (y-1)$ is more delicate. For matroids $M(S)$ on a set $S$, and relative to any linear order on the points, the concept of internal/external activity of a point relative to a basis gives rise to a partition of the underlying Boolean algebra $B(S)$ into a set of "prime-free" (or "structureless") minors, such minors being direct sums of loops and isthmi (coloops), with one such prime-free minor for each basis. What usually goes unnoticed is that each prime-free minor has a unique clopen flat. The latter property carries over to $q$-matroids, but each prime-free minor will contain many bases. So internal and external activity in $q$-matroids must be defined not for points relative to bases, but rather for coverings in the underlying complemented modular lattice. Following lattice paths from arbitrary subspaces $A$ along active coverings (downward for internally active, upward for externally active) will lead to the unique clopen subspace in the prime-free minor containing the subspace $A$. This paper investigates the generalized rank weights, with a definition implied by the study of the generalized rank weight enumerator. We study rank metric codes over $L$, where $L$ is a finite Galois extension of a field $K$. This is a generalization of the case where $K = \mathbb{F}_q$ and $L = \mathbb{F}_{q^m}$ of Gabidulin codes to arbitrary characteristic. We show equivalence to previous definitions, in particular the ones by Kurihara-Matsumoto-Uyematsu, Oggier-Sboui and Ducoat. It is known that, in general, the coboundary polynomial and the M\"obius polynomial of a matroid do not determine each other. Less is known about more specific cases. In this paper, we will try to answer if it is possible that the M\"obius polynomial of a matroid, together with the M\"obius polynomial of the dual matroid, define the coboundary polynomial of the matroid. In some cases, the answer is affirmative, and we will give two constructions to determine the coboundary polynomial in these cases., Comment: 12 pages

We study the generalized and extended weight enumerator of the q-ary Simplex code and the q-ary first order Reed-Muller code. For our calculations we use that these codes correspond to a projective system containing all the points in a finite projective or affine space. As a result from the geometric method we use for the weight enumeration, we also completely determine the set of supports of subcodes and words in an extension code., Comment: 10 pages
