Search

The number of stars observed by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) project in the Galactic bulge offers an invaluable chance to study RR Lyrae stars in a statistical manner. We used data of 3141 fundamental-mode RR Lyrae stars showing the Blazhko effect observed in OGLE-IV to investigate a possible connection between modulation amplitudes and periods, light curve and pulsation characteristics. We found that there is no simple monotonic correlation between any combination of two parameters concerning the Blazhko and pulsation amplitudes, periods and the shape of the light curves. There are only systematic limits. There is a bottom limit of the modulation period with respect to the pulsation period. We also found that the possible range of modulation amplitudes decreases with increasing pulsation period which could point towards that the Blazhko effect is suppressed in cooler, larger, more luminous and less metal abundant bulge RR Lyrae stars. Our investigation revealed that the distribution of the modulation periods can be described with two populations of stars with the mean modulation periods of 48 and 186 days. There is a certain region with a low density of the modulated stars, which we call the Blazhko valley, in the pulsation period-modulation period plane. Based on the similarity of the modulation envelopes, basically every star can be assigned to one of six morphological classes. Double modulation was found in 25 per cent of the studied stars. On the AGB, low to intermediate mass stars blow away their outer envelopes, forming planetary nebulae. Interaction between the planetary nebula and its central progenitor is poorly understood and even more complex when the central object is a binary star with a magnetically active component, like it is the case for IN Com. We aim to quantify the surface activity of the cool binary component of IN Com and aim to explain its origin. We need a better understanding of how central binary stars in planetary nebulae evolve and how this evolution could develop such magnetically active stars like IN Com. We present 13 Doppler images covering six months in 2017 and use them to measure the surface differential rotation. Hitherto unpublished photometric data from between 1989-2017 are presented. We apply Fourier-transformation to both photometry and spectra. Very high resolution spectra are used to update IN Com's astrophysical parameters by means of spectral synthesis. Doppler images show cool and warm spots coexisting with an average surface temperature contrast of -1000K and +300K with respect to the effective temperature. Approximately 8% of the surface is covered with cool spots and 3% with warm spots. A cool polar spot is seen in all images. We found anti-solar surface differential rotation with a shear coefficient of -0.026+/-0.005 and an equatorial rotation period of 5.973+/-0.008 d. We reconfirm the 5.9-day rotation period of the cool star from photometry, radial velocities, and H alpha line-profile variations. A long-term V-brightness variation with a likely period of 7.2yr is found. It appears in phase with the orbital radial velocity of the binary system in the sense brightest at highest velocity and faintest at lowest velocity. We redetermine [Ba/Fe], [Y/Fe] and [Sr/Fe] ratios and confirm the overabundance of these s-process elements in the atmosphere of IN Com., Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present first direct evidence of modulation in the $K$-band of Blazhko-type RR Lyrae stars that are identified by their secular modulations in the I-band data of OGLE-IV. A method has been developed to decompose the $K$-band light variation into two parts originating from the temperature and the radius changes using synthetic data of atmosphere-model grids. The amplitudes of the temperature and the radius variations derived from the method for non-Blazhko RRab stars are in very good agreement with the results of the Baade-Wesselink analysis of RRab stars in the M3 globular cluster confirming the applicability and correctness of the method. It has been found that the Blazhko modulation is primarily driven by the change in the temperature variation. The radius variation plays a marginal part, moreover it has an opposite sign as if the Blazhko effect was caused by the radii variations. This result reinforces the previous finding based on the Baade-Wesselink analysis of M3 (NGC 5272) RR Lyrae, that significant modulation of the radius variations can only be detected in radial-velocity measurements, which relies on spectral lines that form in the uppermost atmospheric layers. Our result gives the first insight into the energetics and dynamics of the Blazhko phenomenon, hence it puts strong constraints on its possible physical explanations., Comment: 16 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The simultaneous photometric and spectroscopic observations of the RR Lyrae variables in the globular cluster, M3, published in Jurcsik et al. (2017, Paper I) made it possible to perform Baade-Wesselink (BW) analysis of a large sample of Blazhko stars for the first time. The BW distances of Blazhko stars turned out to be unreliable, as significantly different distances were obtained for the stars of the Blazhko sample and also for the same star in different modulation phases. Even the results of small modulation-amplitude Blazhko stars may be doubtful. This result warns that the application of the BW method to Blazhko stars is not trustworthy. Keeping the distance fixed for each Blazhko star in each modulation phase, a significant difference between the spectroscopic and the photometric radius ($R_{\textrm{sp}}$, $R_{\textrm{ph}}$) variations is detected. The phase and amplitude variations of $R_{\textrm{sp}}$ follow the changes of the light curve during the Blazhko cycle but the $R_{\textrm{ph}}$ curve seems to be not (or only marginally) affected by the modulation. The asynchronous behaviour of $R_{\textrm{sp}}$ and $R_{\textrm{ph}}$ supports the interpretation of the Blazhko effect as a depth-dependent phenomenon, as the spectroscopic radius variation reflects the radial displacement of the line-forming region high in the atmosphere, while the photospheric radius variation is derived from the information of the observed visual-band light emitted mostly by the lower photosphere. We present the first simultaneous photometric and spectroscopic investigation of a large set of RR Lyrae variables in a globular cluster. The radial-velocity data presented comprise the largest sample of RVs of RR Lyrae stars ever obtained. The target is M3; $BVI_{\mathrm{C}}$ time-series of 111 and $b$ flux data of further 64 RRab stars, and RV data of 79 RR Lyrae stars are published. Blazhko modulation of the light curves of 47 percent of the RRab stars are detected. The mean value of the center-of-mass velocities of RR Lyrae stars is $-146.8$ km s$^{-1}$ with 4.52 km s$^{-1}$ standard deviation, which is in good agreement with the results obtained for the red giants of the cluster. The ${\Phi_{21}}^{\mathrm RV}$ phase difference of the RV curves of RRab stars is found to be uniformly constant both for the M3 and for Galactic field RRab stars; no period or metallicity dependence of the ${\Phi_{21}}^{\mathrm RV}$ is detected. The Baade-Wesselink distances of 26 non-Blazhko variables with the best phase-coverage radial-velocity curves are determined; the corresponding distance of the cluster, $10480\pm210$ pc, agrees with the previous literature information. A quadratic formula for the $A_{\mathrm{puls}}-A_V$ relation of RRab stars is given, which is valid for both OoI and OoII variables. The overtone and multi-mode RR Lyrae stars in the globular cluster M3 are studied using a 200-d long, $B,V$ and $I_{\mathrm C}$ time-series photometry obtained in 2012. 70\% of the 52 overtone variables observed show some kind of multi-periodicity (additional frequency at ${f_{0.61}}={f_{\mathrm {1O}}}/0.61$ frequency ratio, Blazhko effect, double/multi-mode pulsation, period doubling). A signal at 0.587 frequency ratio to the fundamental-mode frequency is detected in the double-mode star, V13, which may be identified as the second radial overtone mode. If this mode-identification is correct, than V13 is the first RR Lyrae star showing triple-mode pulsation of the first three radial modes. Either the Blazhko effect or the ${f_{0.61}}$ frequency (or both of these phenomena) appear in 7 double-mode stars. The $P_{\mathrm{1O}}/P_{\mathrm{F}}$ period ratio of RRd stars showing the Blazhko effect are anomalous. A displacement of the main frequency component at the fundamental-mode with the value of modulation frequency (or its half) is detected in three Blazhko RRd stars parallel with the appearance of the overtone-mode pulsation. The ${f_{0.61}}$ frequency appears in RRc stars that lie at the blue side of the double-mode region and in RRd stars, raising the suspicion that its occurrence may be connected to double-mode pulsation. Despite their importance, very few RR Lyrae (RRL) stars have been known to reside in binary systems. We report on a search for binary RRL in the OGLE-III Galactic bulge data. Our approach consists in the search for evidence of the light-travel time effect in so-called observed minus calculated ($O-C$) diagrams. Analysis of 1952 well-observed fundamental-mode RRL in the OGLE-III data revealed an initial sample of 29 candidates. We used the recently released OGLE-IV data to extend the baselines up to 17 years, leading to a final sample of 12 firm binary candidates. We provide $O-C$ diagrams and binary parameters for this final sample, and also discuss the properties of 8 additional candidate binaries whose parameters cannot be firmly determined at present. A new, extended time-series photometry of M3 RR Lyrae stars has revealed that four of the ten double-mode stars show large-amplitude Blazhko modulation of both radial modes. The first, detailed analysis of the peculiar behavior of the unique, Blazhko RRd stars is given. While the P1/P0 period ratio is normal, and the overtone mode is dominant in the other RRd stars of the cluster, the period ratio is anomalous and the fundamental mode has a larger (or similar) mean amplitude than the overtone has in Blazhko RRd stars. The modulations of the fundamental and overtone modes are synchronized only in one of the Blazhko RRd stars. No evidence of any connection between the modulations of the modes in the other three stars is found. The Blazhko modulation accounts, at least partly, for the previously reported amplitude and period changes of these stars. Contrary to the $\sim50$$%$ Blazhko statistics of RRab and RRd stars, Blazhko modulation occurs only in 10$%$ of the overtone variables in M3. Four of the five Blazhko RRc stars are bright, evolved objects, and one has a similar period and brightness as Blazhko RRd stars have. The regions of the instability strip with high and low occurrence rate of the Blazhko modulation overlap with the regions populated by first- and second-generation stars according to theoretical and observational studies, raising up the possibility that the Blazhko modulation occurs preferentially in first-generation RR Lyrae stars., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

In an extended photometric campaign of RR Lyrae variables of the globular cluster M3, an aberrant light-curve, non-Blazhko RRab star, V123, was detected. Based on its brightness, colors and radial velocity curve, V123 is a bona fide member of M3. The light curve of V123 exhibits neither a bump preceding light minimum, nor a hump on the rising branch, and has a longer than normal rise time, with a convex shape. Similar shape characterizes the mean light curves of some large-modulation-amplitude Blazhko stars, but none of the regular RRab variables with similar pulsation periods. This peculiar object thus mimics Blazhko variables without showing any evidence of periodic amplitude and/or phase modulation. We cannot find any fully convincing answer to the peculiar behavior of V123, however, the phenomenon raises again the possibility that rotation and aspect angle might play a role in the explanation of the Blazhko phenomenon, and some source of inhomogeneity acts (magnetic field, chemical inhomogeneity) that deforms the radial pulsation of Blazhko stars during the modulation., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We present the analysis of the multicolour CCD observations in the 2010 season of the Blazhko RRc star TV Boo. TV Boo shows a complex Blazhko modulation dominated by two independent modulations with P_{fm1}=9.74 d and P_{fm2}=21.43 d long periods. Both modulation components appear in the frequency spectra as multiplet structures around the harmonics of the pulsation. The positive value of the asymmetry parameter (Q=+0.51) of the primary modulation suggests that it is similar in its character to the Blazhko effect of most of the modulated RRab stars. Interestingly, the secondary, lower-amplitude modulation exhibits a negative asymmetry parameter (Q=-0.22), which is an unusually low value when compared to the Blazhko-modulated RRab stars. Apart from the two modulation frequencies, the spectra also show an additional frequency f' and its linear combinations with the pulsation and the primary modulation f_{1}+f' and f_{1}-f'-f_{m1}. A thorough analysis of multicolour CCD observations of two modulated RRab-type variables, XY And and UZ Vir is presented. These Blazhko stars show relatively simple light-curve modulation with the usual multiplet structures in their Fourier spectra. One additional, independent frequency with linear-combination terms of the pulsation frequency is also detected in the residual spectrum of each of the two stars. The amplitude and phase relations of the triplet components are studied in detail. Most of the epoch-independent phase differences show a slight, systematic colour dependence, however, these trends have the opposite sign in the two stars. The mean values of the global physical parameters and their changes with Blazhko phase are determined utilizing the Inverse Photometric Method (IPM). The modulation properties and the IPM results are compared for the two variables. The pulsation period of XY And is the shortest when its pulsation amplitude is the highest, while UZ Vir has the longest pulsation period at this phase of the modulation. Despite this opposite behaviour, the phase relations of their mean-physical-parameter variations are similar. The correct amplitude and phase modulation formalism of the Blazhko modulation is given. The harmonic order dependent amplitude and phase modulation form is equivalent with the Fourier decomposition of multiplets. The amplitude and phase modulation formalism used in electronic transmission technique as introduced by Benk\H{o}, Szab\'o and Papar\'o (2011, MNRAS 417, 974) for Blazhko stars oversimplifies the amplitude and phase modulation functions thus it does not describe the light variation in full detail. The analysis of recent, extended multicolour CCD and archive photoelectric, photographic and visual observations has revealed several important properties of RZ Lyr, an RRab-type variable exhibiting large-amplitude Blazhko modulation. On the time-base of \sim110 yr, a strict anticorrelation between the pulsation and modulation period changes is established. The light curve of RZ Lyr shows a remarkable bump on the descending branch in the small-amplitude phase of the modulation, similarly to the light curves of bump Cepheids. We speculate that the stellar structure temporally suits a 4:1 resonance between the periods of the fundamental and one of the higher-order radial modes in this modulation phase. The light-curve variation of RZ Lyr can be correctly fitted with a two-modulation-component solution; the 121 d period of the main modulation is nearly but not exactly four times longer than the period of the secondary modulation component. The period-change behaviour of 134 RR Lyrae stars in the globular cluster Messier 3 (M3) is investigated on the ~120-year time base of the photometric observations. The mean period-change rates (\beta \approx 0.01 d Myr^-1) of the subsamples of variables exhibiting the most regular behaviour are in good agreement with theoretical expectations based on Horizontal-Branch stellar evolution models. However, a large fraction of variables show period changes that contradict the evolutionary expectations. Among the 134 stars studied, the period-change behaviour of only 54 variables is regular (constant or linearly changing), slight irregularities are superimposed on the regular variations in 23 cases and the remaining 57 stars display irregular period variations. The light curve of ~50 per cent of the RRab stars is not stable, i.e., these variables exhibit Blazhko modulation. The large fraction of variables with peculiar behaviour (showing light-curve modulation and/or irregular O-C variation) indicate that, probably, variables with regular period changes incompatible with their evolutionary stages also could display some kind of instability of the pulsation light curve and/or period, but the available observations have not disclosed it yet. The temporal appearence of the Blazhko effect in some stars, and the 70-90 years long regular changes preceded or followed by irregular, rapid changes of the pulsation period in some cases support this hypothesis. The light curves of 50 RRab (RR0) stars in M5 collected in Paper I are investigated to detect Blazhko modulation. 18 Blazhko stars are identified, and modulation is suspected in two additional cases. The mean pulsation period of Blazhko stars is 0.04 d shorter than the mean period of the entire RRab sample in M5. Among the RRab stars with period shorter than 0.55 d the incidence rate of the modulation is as high as 60 per cent. The mean $B-V$ colours of Blazhko stars overlap with the colours of first overtone RRc (RR1) pulsators. The mean $V$ magnitudes of Blazhko stars are on the average 0.05-mag fainter than those of the RRab stars with stable light curves. Blazhko stars tend to be situated close to the zero-age horizontal branch at the blue edge of the fundamental-mode instability strip in M5. The period changes of 86 M5 RR Lyrae stars have been investigated on a one-hundred-year time base. The published observations have been supplemented by archival Asiago, Konkoly and Las Campanas photographic observations obtained between 1952 and 1993. About two thirds of the O-C diagrams could be fitted by a straight line or a parabola. 21 RR Lyrae stars have increasing, 18 decreasing and 16 constant period. The mean rates of period change of these variables are: = <\dot{P}> = -0.006\pm0.162 d Myr^{-1}, = = -0.021 \pm0.308 Myr^{-1}. Ten RR Lyrae stars show fast period decrease with \dot{P} < - 0.10 d Myr^{-1}. At least some of these variables may be in the pre-zero-age horizontal-branch (ZAHB) evolutionary stage. The variables on the long-period sequence of the period-amplitude diagram are brighter than the other RR Lyrae stars of M5 and are in an advanced evolutionary stage moving off from the HB redward. More than one third of the M5 RR Lyrae stars investigated have irregular period change. The irregular period behaviour is relatively more frequent among the RRc (RR1) stars (50 per cent) than among the RRab (RR0) stars (34 per cent). A strict relationship has been found between the irregular period change and the Blazhko effect of M5 RRab stars. This fact indicates a common origin for these phenomena. It is remarkable that, if the RRab stars showing Blazhko effect are omitted from the sample, the mean rates of the period change have small positive values ( = 0.012 \pm0.147 d Myr^{-1}, = 0.013 \pm 0.279 Myr^{-1}), in excellent agreement with HB evolutionary model predictions., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, MNRAS accepted

Thorough analysis of the multicolour CCD observations of the RRab-type variable, CZ Lacertae is presented. The observations were carried out in two consecutive observing seasons in 2004 and 2005 within the framework of the Konkoly Blazhko Survey of bright, northern, short-period RRab variables. The O-C variation of CZ Lac indicated that a significant period decrease took place just around the time of the CCD observations. Our data gave a unique opportunity to study the related changes in the pulsation and modulation properties of a Blazhko star in detail. Two different period components ($\approx$14.6 d and $\approx$18.6 d) of the Blazhko modulation were identified. Both modulation components had similar strength. The periods and amplitudes of the modulations changed significantly from the first season to the next, meanwhile, the mean pulsation amplitude slightly decreased. The modulation frequencies were in a 5:4 resonance ratio in the first observing season then the frequencies shifted in opposite directions, and their ratio was close to the 4:3 resonance in the next season. The interaction of the two modulations caused beating with a period of 74~d in the first season, which resembled the 4-yr-long cycle of the $\approx$40-d modulation of RR Lyr. We present more than 1000-day long photometry of EY Draconis in BV(RI)C passbands. The changes in the light curve are caused by the spottedness of the rotating surface. Modelling of the spotted surface shows that there are two large active regions present on the star on the opposite hemispheres. The evolution of the surface patterns suggests a flip-flop phenomenon. Using Fourier analysis, we detect a rotation period of P_rot=0.45875d, and an activity cycle with P~350d, similar to the 11-year long cycle of the Sun. This cycle with its year-long period is the shortest one ever detected on active stars. A systematic survey to establish the true incidence rate of the Blazhko modulation among short-period, fundamental-mode, Galactic field RR Lyrae stars has been accomplished. The Konkoly Blazhko Survey (KBS) was initiated in 2004. Since then more than 750 nights of observation have been devoted to this project. A sample of 30 RRab stars was extensively observed, and light-curve modulation was detected in 14 cases. The 47% occurrence rate of the modulation is much larger than any previous estimate. The significant increase of the detected incidence rate is mostly due to the discovery of small-amplitude modulation. Half of the Blazhko variables in our sample show modulation with so small amplitude that definitely have been missed in the previous surveys. We have found that the modulation can be very unstable in some cases, e.g. RY Com showed regular modulation only during one part of the observations while during two seasons it had stable light curve with abrupt, small changes in the pulsation amplitude. This type of light-curve variability is also hard to detect in other Survey's data. The larger frequency of the light-curve modulation of RRab stars makes it even more important to find the still lacking explanation of the Blazhko phenomenon. The validity of the [Fe/H](P,phi_{31}) relation using the mean light curves of Blazhko variables is checked in our sample. We have found that the formula gives accurate result for small-modulation-amplitude Blazhko stars, and this is also the case for large-modulation-amplitude stars if the light curve has complete phase coverage. However, if the data of large-modulation-amplitude Blazhko stars are not extended enough (e.g. < 500 data points from < 15 nights), the formula may give false result due to the distorted shape of the mean light curve used., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 14 pages, 7 Figures

The mathematical model of periodically amplitude and phase modulated sinusoidal oscillation is studied, and its Fourier spectrum is given analytically. The Fourier spectrum of the model explains the main features of the frequency spectrum of RR Lyrae stars showing light curve modulation called the Blazhko effect: among others the appearance of multiplets, the rapid decrease of their amplitudes in increasing orders, the asymmetry of the amplitudes of the side frequency pairs, and the possibility of the occurrence of frequency doublets instead of triplets in the spectrum. The good agreement of the results of this mathematical model with observational facts favours those physical models of the Blazhko effect which explain the phenomenon as a modulation of the oscillation with the modulation frequency, f_m., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in CoAst

DM Cyg, a fundamental mode RRab star was observed in the 2007 and 2008 seasons in the frame of the Konkoly Blazhko Survey. Very small amplitude light curve modulation was detected with 10.57 d modulation period. The maximum brightness and phase variations do not exceed 0.07 mag and 7 min, respectively. In spite of the very small amplitude of the modulation, beside the frequency triplets characterizing the Fourier spectrum of the light curve two quintuplet components were also identified. The accuracy and the good phase coverage of our observations made it possible to analyse the light curves at different phases of the modulation separately. Utilizing the IP method (S\'odor, Jurcsik and Szeidl, 2009) we could detect very small systematic changes in the global mean physical parameters of DM Cyg during its Blazhko cycle. The detected changes are similar to what we have already found for a large modulation amplitude Blazhko variable MW Lyrae. The amplitudes of the detected changes in the physical parameters of DM Cyg are only about 10% of that what have been found in MW Lyr. This is in accordance with its small modulation amplitude being about one tenth of the modulation amplitude of MW Lyr., Comment: 12 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables. We present a new method for determining physical parameters of RRab variables exclusively from multicolour light curves. Our method is an Inverse Photometric Baade-Wesselink analysis which, using a nonlinear least squares algorithm, searches for the effective temperature (T_eff) and pulsational velocity (V_p) curves and other physical parameters that best fit the observed light curves, utilising synthetic colours and bolometric corrections from static atmosphere models. The T_eff and V_p curves are initially derived from empirical relations then they are varied by the fitting algorithm. The method yields the variations and the absolute values of the radius, the effective temperature, the visual brightness, and the luminosity of individual objects. Distance and mass are also determined. The method is tested on 9 RRab stars subjected to Baade-Wesselink analyses earlier by several authors. The physical parameters derived by our method using only the light curve data of these stars are well within their possible ranges defined by direct Baade-Wesselink and other techniques. A new empirical relation between the I_C magnitude and the pulsational velocity is also presented, which allows to construct the V_p curve of an RRab star purely from photometric observations to an accuracy of about 3.5 km/s., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. The analysis of the multicolour photometric observations of MW Lyr, a large modulation amplitude Blazhko variable, shows for the first time how the mean global physical parameters vary during the Blazhko cycle. About 1-2 percent changes in the mean radius, luminosity and surface effective temperature are detected. The mean radius and temperature changes are in good accordance with pulsation model results, which show that these parameters do indeed vary within this order of magnitude if the amplitude of the pulsation changes significantly. We interpret the phase modulation of the pulsation to be a consequence of period changes. Its magnitude corresponds exactly what one expects from the detected changes of the mean radius assuming that the pulsation constant remains the same during the modulation. Our results indicate that during the modulation the pulsation remains purely radial, and the underlying mechanism is most probably a periodic perturbation of the stellar luminosity with the modulation period., Comment: 10 figures, 2 tables. We have obtained the most extensive and most accurate photometric data of a Blazhko variable MW Lyr during the 2006-2007 observing seasons. The data within each 0.05 phase bin of the modulation period (P_m=1/f_m) cover the entire light cycle of the primary pulsation period (P_0=1/f_0), making possible a very rigorous and complete analysis. The modulation period is found to be 16.5462 d, which is about half of that was reported earlier from visual observations. Previously unknown features of the modulation have been detected. Besides the main modulation frequency f_m, sidelobe modulation frequencies around the pulsation frequency and its harmonics appear at +/- 2 f_m, +/- 4 f_m, and +/- 12.5 f_m separations as well. Residual signals in the prewhitened light curve larger than the observational noise appear at the minimum-rising branch-maximum phase of the pulsation, which most probably arise from some stochastic/chaotic behaviour of the pulsation/modulation. The Fourier parameters of the mean light curve differ significantly from the averages of the Fourier parameters of the observed light curves in the different phases of the Blazhko cycle. Consequently, the mean light curve of MW Lyrae never matches its actual light variation. The Phi_21, Phi_31 phase differences in different phases of the modulation show unexpected stability during the Blazhko cycle. We derive the basic physical parameters of the field double-mode RR Lyrae star BS Com from its observed periods and the requirement of consistency between the pulsational and evolutionary constraints. By using the current solar-scaled horizontal branch evolutionary models of Pietrinferni et al. (2004) and our linear non-adiabatic purely radiative pulsational models, we get M/M(Sun) = 0.698 +/- 0.004, log(L/L(Sun)) = 1.712 +/- 0.005, T(eff) = 6840 +/- 14 K, [Fe/H] = -1.67 +/- 0.01, where the errors are standard deviations assuming uniform age distribution along the full range of uncertainty in age. The last two parameters are in a good agreement with the ones derived from the observed BVIc colours and the updated ATLAS9 stellar atmosphere models. We get T(eff) = 6842 +/- 10 K, [Fe/H] = -1.58 +/- 0.11, where the errors are purely statistical ones. It is remarkable that the derived parameters are nearly independent of stellar age at early evolutionary stages. Later stages, corresponding to the evolution toward the asymptotic giant branch are most probably excluded because the required high temperatures are less likely to satisfy the constraints posed by the colours. RV UMa is one of the RRab stars showing regular large amplitude light curve modulation. Extended photoelectric observations of RV UMa obtained at the Konkoly Observatory were published by Kanyo (1976). The analysis of the data was published by Kovacs (1995). After detecting an error in the reduction procedure of the published Konkoly data, corrected photometric data are presented with additional, previously unpublished measurements. The reanalysis of the combination of the corrected Konkoly data supplemented with Preston & Spinrad's (1967) observations has led to the discovery that the adequate mathematical model of the light curve is, in fact, a quintuplet, instead of a triplet frequency solution. This finding has crucial importance in the interpretation of the Blazhko phenomenon, as triplet (doublet) is the preferred structure in the resonance models, quintuplet in the magnetic models. Period changes of both the pulsation and the modulation light variations of RV UMa have been detected based on its century long photometric observations. An overall anticorrelation between the pulsation and the modulation period changes can be defined with dP_{Bl} / dP_0 = -8.6 pm 10^4 gradient, i.e., the modulation period is longer if the pulsation period is shorter. Between 1946 and 1975 the pulsation and modulation periods showed, however, parallel changes, which points to that there is no strict relation between the changes in the periods of the pulsation and the modulation., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

Context. RR Gem is one of the few Blazhko RR Lyrae that has photometric observations available extended enough to study the long-term courses of its pulsation and modulation properties in detail. Aims. We investigate the pulsation and modulation properties and the relations between them in RR Gem using photometric observations from the past 70 years in order to gain further insight into the nature of the Blazhko modulation. Methods. We studied the photographic, photoelectric, and CCD light curves obtained at the Konkoly Observatory and other authors' published maxima observations. Detailed analysis of the light curves, maximum brightness, and O-C data are carried out. Results. RR Gem showed modulation most of the time it was observed. The modulation amplitude showed strong variations from the undetectable level (less than 0.04 mag in maximum brightness) to about 0.20 mag. The amplitudes of the amplitude and phase modulations showed parallel changes, thus the total 'power' of the modulation have changed during the past 70 years. Parallel changes in the pulsation and modulation periods occur with a d P_mod / d P_puls = 1.6 +/- 0.8 * 10^3 ratio. Extended BV(RI)c CCD observations of SS Cnc, a short period RRab star are presented. Nearly 1400 data points in each band have been obtained spanning over 79 days during the spring of 2005. The star exhibits light curve modulation, the so called Blazhko effect with small amplitude (B maximum brightness varies 0.1 mag) and with the shortest modulation period (5.309 d) ever observed. In the Fourier spectrum of the V light curve the pulsation frequency components are detected up to the 24th harmonic order, and modulation side lobe frequencies with significantly asymmetric amplitudes are seen up to the 15th and 9th orders for the lower and higher frequency components, respectively. Detailed comparison of the modulation behavior of SS Cnc and RR Gem, the two recently discovered small amplitude, short modulation period Blazhko stars is presented. The modulation frequency (f_m) appears in the Fourier spectrum of both stars with similar amplitude. We also demonstrate that the modulation frequencies have basically different properties as the pulsation and modulation side lobe frequencies have, indicating that the physics behind these frequency components are not the same. The discovery of small amplitude modulations of RRab stars cautions that the large photometric surveys (MACHO, OGLE) may seriously underestimate the number of modulated RR Lyrae stars., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. Based on extended multicolour CCD photometry of the triple-mode radial pulsator V823 Cas we studied the properties of the coupling frequencies invoked by nonlinear processes. Our results support that a resonance connection as suggested by Antonello & Aikawa (1998) affects the mode coupling behaviour. The P1/P0 period ratio of V823 Cas has an "out of range" value if compared with the period ratios of the known double mode pulsators, while the P2/P1 period ratio is normal. The periods and period ratios cannot be consistently interpret without conflict with pulsation and/or evolution models. We attempt to interpret this failure by the suggestion that at present, the periods of V823 Cas are in a transient, resonance affected state, thus do not reflect the true parameters of the object. The anomalous period change behaviour of the fundamental and second overtone modes supports this idea. Extended CCD monitoring of RR Gem revealed that it is a Blazhko type RRab star with the shortest Blazhko period (7.23d) and smallest modulation amplitude (Delta Mmax<0.1 mag) currently known. The short period of the modulation cycle enabled us to obtain complete phase coverage of the pulsation at each phase of the modulation. This is the first multicolour observation of a Blazhko star which is extended enough to define accurate mean magnitudes and colours of the variable at different Blazhko phases. Small, but real, changes in the intensity mean colours at different Blazhko phases have been detected. The Fourier analysis of the light curves shows that, in spite of the mmag and smaller order of the amplitudes, the triplet structure is noticeable up to about the 14th harmonic. The modulation is concentrated to a very narrow, 0.2 phase range of the pulsation, centred on the supposed onset of the H emission during rising light. These observational results raise further complications for theoretical explanation of the long known but poorly understood Blazhko phenomenon., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. The large number of variables in M3 provides a unique opportunity to study an extensive sample of variables with the same apparent distance modulus. Recent, high accuracy CCD time series of the variables show that according to their mean magnitudes and light curve shapes, the variables belong to four separate groups. Comparing the properties of these groups (magnitudes and periods) with horizontal branch evolutionary models, we conclude that these samples can be unambiguously identified with different stages of the horizontal branch stellar evolution. Stars close to the zero age horizontal branch (ZAHB) show Oosterhoff I type properties, while the brightest stars have Oosterhoff II type statistics regarding their mean periods and RRab/RRc number ratios. This finding strengthens the earlier suggestion of Lee et al. (1990) connecting the Oosterhoff dichotomy to evolutionary effects, however, it is unexpected to find large samples of both of the Oosterhoff type within a single cluster, which is, moreover, the prototype of the Oosterhoff I class globular clusters. The very slight difference between the Fourier parameters of the stars (at a given period) in the three fainter samples spanning over about 0.15 mag range in M_V points to the limitations of any empirical methods which aim to determine accurate absolute magnitudes of RR Lyrae stars solely from the Fourier parameters of the light curves., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. The extended photometry available for XZ Dra, a Blazhko type RR Lyrae star, makes it possible to study its long-term behavior. It is shown that its pulsation period exhibit cyclic, but not strictly regular variations with approx. 7200 d period. The Blazhko period (approx. 76 d) seems to follow the observed period changes of the fundamental mode pulsation with dP_B/dP_0=7.7 x 10^4 gradient. Binary model cannot explain this order of period change of the Blazhko modulation, nevertheless it can be brought into agreement with the O-C data of the pulsation. Reexamination of the amplitude ratios of the photometric and radial velocity changes of Blazhko RRab stars in their different Blazhko phases shows that a normal amplitude ratio occurs near the phase of maximum amplitude. Checking the Fourier parameters of maximum amplitude light curves with different methods proved, however, that none of these light curves can be regarded as a normal RR Lyrae type light curve., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure. We present new multicolour CCD photometry of the central part of the globular cluster M3, mapping the precise position of ~120 RR Lyrae stars (RRab, RRd, RRc) on the horizontal branch (HB). The location of the double-mode variables (RRd) is in perfect agreement with recent theoretical results.
