Sub-picosecond optical laser processing of metals is actively utilized for modification of a heated surface layer. But for deeper modification of different materials a laser in the hard x-ray range is required. Here, we demonstrate that a single 9-keV x-ray pulse from a free-electron laser can form a um-diameter cylindrical cavity with length of ~1 mm in LiF surrounded by shock-transformed material. The plasma-generated shock wave with TPa-level pressure results in damage, melting and polymorphic transformations of any material, including transparent and non-transparent to conventional optical lasers. Moreover, cylindrical shocks can be utilized to obtain a considerable amount of exotic high-pressure polymorphs. Pressure wave propagation in LiF, radial material flow, formation of cracks and voids are analyzed via continuum and atomistic simulations revealing a sequence of processes leading to the final structure with the long cavity. Similar results can be produced with semiconductors and ceramics, which opens a new pathway for development of laser material processing with hard x-ray pulses.

Large surface area applications such as high-efficiency > 26% solar cells require surface patterning with 1-10 micrometers periodic patterns at high fidelity over 1-10 cm^2 areas (before up scaling to 1 m^2) to perform at, or exceed, the Lambertian (ray optics) limit of light trapping. Here we show a pathway to high-resolution sub-1 micrometer etch mask patterning by ablation using direct femtosecond laser writing performed at room conditions (without the need for a vacuum-based lithography approach). A Bessel beam was used to alleviate the required high surface tracking tolerance for ablation of 0.3-0.8 micrometer diameter holes in ~40 nm alumina Al2O3-mask at high writing speed, 7.5 cm/s; a patterning rate 1 cm^2 per 20 min. The plasma etching protocol was optimised for a zero-mesa formation of photonic crystal (PhC) trapping structures and smooth surfaces at the nanoscale level. Determination of refractive index of micro-disks of a calcinated ($1100^\circ$C in air) photo-resist SZ2080$^\mathrm{TM}$ was carried out using transmission and reflection spectroscopy. Interference fringes at specific wavenumbers/wavelengths were selected for determination of the optical thickness, hence, the refractive index when the thickness of micro-disks was measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Refractive index of disks of $\sim 6\pm 1~\mu$m thickness were determined at visible and IR (2.5-13~$\mu$m) spectral ranges and where $2.2\pm 0.2$ at visible and IR wavelengths. Four Stokes parameters (1852) define the polarisation state of light. Measured changes of the Stokes vector of light traversing an inhomogeneous sample are linked to the local anisotropies of absorption and refraction and are harnessed over an increasing range of applications in photonics, material, and space/earth observation. Several independent polarisation sensitive measurements are usually required for determination of the all four Stokes parameters, which makes such characterisation procedure time-consuming or requires complex setups. Here we introduce a single-snapshot approach to Stokes polarimetry in transmission by use of a 4-polarisation camera with the on-chip integrated polarisers. A quarter-waveplate was added in front of the sample and was illuminated by a linearly polarised light. This approach is demonstrated by measuring birefringence $\Delta n\sim 0.012$ of spider silk of only $\sim 6~\mu$m-diameter using microscopy, however, due to its generic nature, it is transferable to other spectral ranges and imaging applications, e.g., imaging from a fast moving satellite or drone or monitoring fast changing events such as phase transitions., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH) is a well-established digital holography technique for 3D imaging of objects illuminated by spatially incoherent light. FINCH has a higher lateral resolution of 1.5 times that of direct imaging systems with the same numerical aperture. However, the other imaging characteristics of FINCH such as axial resolution, temporal resolution, light throughput and signal to noise ratio (SNR) are lower than those of direct imaging system. Different techniques were developed by researchers around the world to improve the imaging characteristics of FINCH while retaining the inherent higher lateral resolution of FINCH. However, most of the solutions developed to improve FINCH presented additional challenges. In this study, we optimized FINCH in the framework of coded aperture imaging. Two recently developed computational methods such as transport of amplitude into phase based on Gerchberg Saxton algorithm (TAP-GSA) and Lucy-Richardson-Rosen algorithm were applied to improve light throughput and image reconstruction respectively. The above implementation improved the axial resolution, time resolution and SNR of FINCH close to those of direct imaging while retaining the high lateral resolution. A point spread function (PSF) engineering technique has been implemented to prevent the low lateral resolution problem associated with the PSF recorded using pinholes with a large diameter. Laser cutting of semiconductor wafers and transparent dielectrics has become a dominant process in manufacturing industries, encompassing a wide range of applications from flat display panels to microelectronic chips. Limited by the diffraction barrier imposed on the beam width and its longitudinal extend of laser focus, a trade-off must be made between cutting accuracy and aspect ratio in conventional laser processing, with accuracy typically approaching a micron and the aspect ratio on the order of $10^2$. Herein, we propose a method to circumvent this limitation. It is based on the laser modification induced by a back-scattering interference crawling mechanism, which creates a positive feedback for homogenizing longitudinal energy deposition and lateral sub-wavelength light confinement during laser-matter interaction. Consequently, cutting width on the scale of tens of nanometers and aspect ratio $10^3 \sim 10^4$ were simultaneously achieved. We refer to this technique as ``super stealth dicing'', which is validated through numerical simulations, ensuring its broad applicability. It can be applied to various transparent functional solids, such as glass, laser crystal, ferroelectric, and semiconductor, and is elevating the precision of future advanced laser dicing, patterning, and drilling into the nanometric era., Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures

Light trapping photonic crystal (PhC) patterns on the surface of Si solar cells provides a novel opportunity to approach the theoretical efficiency limit of 32.3%, for light-to-electrical power conversion with a single junction cell. This is beyond the efficiency limit implied by the Lambertian limit of ray trapping 29%. The interference and slow light effects are harnessed for collecting light even at the long wavelengths near the Si band-gap. We compare two different methods for surface patterning, that can be extended to large area surface patterning: 1) laser direct write and 2) step-&-repeat 5-times reduction projection lithography. Large area throughput limitations of these methods are compared with the established electron beam lithography (EBL) route, which is conventionally utilised but much slower than the presented methods. Spectral characterisation of the PhC light trapping is compared for samples fabricated by different methods. Reflectance of Si etched via laser patterned mask was 7% at visible wavelengths and was comparable with Si patterned via EBL made mask. Fabrication of large area (sub 1 cm cross-section) micro-optical components in a short period of time (approximately 10 min) and with lesser number of processing steps is highly desirable and cost-effective. In the recent years, femtosecond laser fabrication technology has revolutionized the field of manufacturing by offering the above capabilities. In this study, a fundamental diffractive optical element, binary axicon i.e axicon with two phase or amplitude levels, has been designed in three configurations namely conventional axicon, photon sieve axicon (PSA) and sparse PSA and directly milled onto the Sapphire substrate. The fabrication results revealed that a single pulse burst fabrication can produce a flat and smooth profile than pulse overlapped fabrication which gives rise to surface damage and increased roughness. The fabricated elements were processed in IsoPropyl Alcohol and Potassium Hydroxide to remove debris and redeposited amorphous Sapphire. An incoherent illumination was used for optical testing of the components and a non-linear optical filter was used for cleaning the noisy images generated by the diffractive optical elements., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

We theoretically investigate integrated photonic resonators formed by two mutually coupled Sagnac loop reflectors (MC-SLRs). Mode interference in the MC-SLR resonators is tailored to achieve versatile filter shapes with high performance, which enable flexible spectral engineering for diverse applications. By adjusting the reflectivity of the Sagnac loop reflectors (SLRs) as well as the coupling strength between different SLRs, we achieve optical analogues of Fano resonance with ultrahigh spectral slope rates, wavelength interleaving / non-blocking switching functions with significantly enhanced filtering flatness, and compact bandpass filters with improved roll-off. In our designs the requirements for practical applications are considered, together with detailed analyses of the impact of structural parameters and fabrication tolerances. The self-organised conical needles produced by plasma etching of silicon (Si), known as black silicon (b-Si), create a form-birefringent surface texture when etching of Si orientated at angles of $\theta_i < 50 - 70^\circ$ (angle between the Si surface and vertical plasma E-field). The height of the needles in the form-birefringent region following 15~min etching was $d\sim 200$ nm and had a 100 $\mu$m width of the optical retardance/birefringence, characterised using polariscopy. The height of the b-Si needles corresponds closely to the skin-depth of Si $\sim\lambda/4$ for the visible spectral range. Reflection-type polariscope with a voltage-controlled liquid-crystal retarder is proposed to directly measure the retardance $\Delta n\times d/\lambda\approx 0.15$ of the region with tilted b-Si needles. The quantified form birefringence of $\Delta n = - 0.45$ over $\lambda = 400-700$~nm spectral window was obtained. Such high values of $\Delta n$ at visible wavelengths can only be observed in the most birefringence calcite or barium borate as well as in liquid crystals. The replication of b-Si into Ni-shim with high fidelity was also demonstrated and can be used for imprinting of the b-Si nanopattern into other materials., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

Lithography-free metasurfaces composed of a nano-layered stack of materials are attractive not only due to their optical properties but also by virtue of fabrication simplicity and cost reduction of devices based on such structures. We demonstrate a multi-layer metasurface with engineered electromagnetic absorption in the mid-infrared (MIR) wavelength range. Characterisation of thin SiO$_2$ and Si films sandwiched between two Au layers by way of experimental absorption and thermal radiation measurements as well as finite difference time domain (FDTD) numerical simulations is presented. Simultaneous measurements of THz wave and hard X-ray emission from thin and flat water flow when irradiated by double femtosecond laser pulses (800 nm, 35 fs, transform-limited, 0.5 kHz, delay times up to 15 ns) were carried out at the transmission and the reflection sides of the flow with THz time-domain spectroscopy and Geiger counters. THz wave emission spectra show their dynamic peak-shifts toward the low frequency with the highest intensity enhancements more than 1.5 x 10^3 times in |E|^2 at the delay time of 4.7 ns between the two pulses, while X-ray intensity enhancements are limited to about 20 times at 0 ns under the same experimental conditions. The mechanisms for the spectral changes and the intensity enhancements in THz wave emission are discussed from the viewpoint of laser ablation on the water flow induced by the pre-pulse irradiation., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Detection of phase variations across optically transparent samples is often a difficult task. We propose and demonstrate a compact, lightweight and low cost quantitative phase contrast imager. Light diffracted from a pinhole is incident on a thick object and the modulated light is collected by an image sensor and the intensity pattern is recorded. Two optical configurations namely lens-based and lensless cases are compared. A modified phase-retrieval algorithm is implemented to extract the phase information of the sample at different axial planes from a single camera shot., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH) is a self-interference based super-resolution three-dimensional imaging technique. FINCH in inline configuration requires an active phase modulator and at least three camera shots to reconstruct objects without the twin image and bias terms. In this study, FINCH is realized using a randomly multiplexed bifocal binary Fresnel zone lenses fabricated using electron beam lithography. A modified hologram reconstruction mechanism is presented which introduces the single shot capability in FINCH. A point spread hologram library was recorded using a point object located at different axial locations and an object hologram was recorded. The image of the object at different planes were reconstructed using decorrelation of the object hologram by the point spread hologram library. Simultaneous measurements of hard X-ray by a Geiger counter and audible sound (10 Hz-20kHz) by a microphone from a thin water film in air were carried out under intense single and double pulse irradiations of femtosecond laser (35 fs, 800 nm, 1 kHz). Emission profiles of X-ray and sound under the single pulse irradiation by changing the water film position along the laser incident direction (Z-axis) show the same peak positions with a broader emission in sound (403{\mu}m at FWHM) than in X-ray (37{\mu}m). Under the double pulse irradiation condition with the time delay at 0 ps and 4.6 ns, it was clearly observed that the acoustic signal intensity is enhanced in associated with X-ray intensity enhancements. The enhancements can be assigned to laser ablation dynamics such as pre-plasma formation and transient surface roughness formation induced by the pre-pulse irradiation. For the acoustic signal under the double-pulse irradiation with the time delay, there was a weak dependence observed on the pre-pulse irradiation position at the laser focus. It is consistent with a long breakdown filament formation which makes the microphone-detection less position-sensitive.

Background: Nanoscale composition of silk defining its unique properties via a hierarchical structural anisotropy has to be analysed at the highest spatial resolution of tens-of-nanometers corresponding to the size of fibrils made of b-sheets, which are the crystalline building blocks of silk. Results: Nanoscale optical and structural properties of silk have been measured from 100-nm thick longitudinal slices of silk fibers with ~10 nm resolution, the highest so far. Optical sub-wavelength resolution in hyperspectral mapping of absorbance and molecular orientation were carried out for comparison at IR wavelengths 2-10 micrometers using synchrotron radiation. Conclusion: Reliable distinction of transmission changes by only 1-2% due to anisotropy of amide bands was obtained from nano-thin slices of silk.

Fast fabrication of micro-optical elements for generation of optical vortex beams based on the q-plate design is demonstrated by femtosecond (fs) laser ablation of gold film on glass. Q-plates with diameter of ~0.5 mm were made in ~1 min using galvanometric scanners with writing speed of 5 mm/s. Period of gratings of 0.8 micrometers and groove width of 250 nm were achieved using fs-laser ablation at 343 nm wavelength. Phase and intensity analysis of optical vortex generators was carried out at 633 nm wavelength and confirmed the designed performance. Efficiency of spin-orbital conversion of the q-plates made by ablation of 50-nm-thick film of gold was ~3%. Such gratings can withstand thermal annealing up to 800C. Domain structure of paracetamol -- popular antipyretic analgesic -- was investigated by infrared (IR) spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. Absorbance and retardance maps reveal molecular orientation inside the micro-domains of the paracetamol form II which has a better water solubility and compressibility compared to the commercially used forms I. The developed method of analysis representing orientation of optical slow(fast)-axis is compared with azimuthal orientation of the absorbance at several specific IR bands using vector maps. High brightness of synchrotron radiation and hyper-spectral mapping of structural domains in paracetamol clearly reveals the domain boundaries and can potentially be used to observe \emph{in situ} intra-phase transformations of paracetamol forms-I, II, III and melting, which are important for making medical tablets and powders by an industrial process., Comment: eight figures in the main text and one in supplement

A polarised light imaging microscopy with an addition of liquid crystal (LC) phase retarder was implemented to determine the birefringence of silk fibers with the high 2 micrometers spatial resolution. The measurement was carried out with silk fiber (the optical slow axis) and the slow axis of the LC retarder set parallel (a perpendicular alignment can also be used). The direct fit of the transmission data provides a high fidelity determination of birefringence, $Dn = 1.63\times 10^{-2}$ (with 2% uncertainty) of the brown silk fiber (Antheraea pernyi) averaged over the wavelength range $l =$ (425-625) nm. By measuring retardance at four wavelengths it was possible to determine the true value of the birefringence of a thick sample when an optical path may include large number of wavelengths ($2p$ cycles in phase). We develop an open source software "GDoeSII" for the simulation of Fresnel (near field) and Fraunhofer (far field) diffraction integrals of diffractive optical elements (DOE). It can compute the intensity distributions at a desired plane from the DOE. This software can also convert the phase profiles of the DOEs from standard image formats such as JPG and PNG to lithography graphic format GDSII for fabrication purposes. The conversion algorithm used in this program groups adjacent same-valued pixels and creates a single cell rather than creating a cell for each and every pixel in the image file. This results in a faster and much lower output GDSII file size. Conversion to multi-layer GDSII format is also possible for grayscale lithography. Thermo-optical properties of the nanodisc and metal hole array plasmonic perfect absorber (PPA) metasurfaces were designed and characterised at midinfrared wavelengths. Both, light emitter and detector systems are highly thought after for the future sensor networks in the internet-of-things for various spectral domains. Reciprocity of the absorbance and emittance is shown experimentally, i.e., the PPAs are following Kirchhoff's law where the patterns exhibiting a strong optical absorption were found enhanced thermal radiation. Design principles and scaling for photo-thermal conversion are discussed. The highest efficiency of light-to-heat and heat-to-radiation were obtained for the Au-Si-Au structures.

A thermocouple of Au-Ni with only 2.5-micrometers-wide electrodes on a 30-nm-thick Si3N4 membrane was fabricated by a simple low-resolution electron beam lithography and lift off procedure. The thermocouple is shown to be sensitive to heat generated by laser as well as an electron beam. Nano-thin membrane was used to reach a high spatial resolution of energy deposition and to realise a heat source of sub-1 micrometer diameter. This was achieved due to a limited generation of secondary electrons, which increase a lateral energy deposition. A low thermal capacitance of the fabricated devices is useful for the real time monitoring of small and fast temperature changes, e.g., due to convection, and can be detected through an optical and mechanical barrier of the nano-thin membrane. Temperature changes up to ~2x10^5 K/s can be measured at 10 kHz rate. A simultaneous down-sizing of both, the heat detector and heat source strongly required for creation of thermal microscopy is demonstrated. Peculiarities of Seebeck constant (thermopower) dependence on electron injection into thermocouple are discussed. Modeling of thermal flows on a nano-membrane with presence of a micro-thermocouple was carried out to compare with experimentally measured temporal response., Comment: 5 figures

Recently, metasurfaces have gained popularity due to their ability to offer a spatially varying phase response, low intrinsic losses and high transmittance. Here, we demonstrate numerically and experimentally a silicon metasurface at THz frequencies that converts a Gaussian beam into a Vortex beam independent of the polarization of the incident beam. The metasurface consists of an array of sub-wavelength silicon cross resonators made of a high refractive index material on substrates such as sapphire and CaF$_2$ that are transparent at IR-THz spectral range. With these substrates, it is possible to create phase elements for a specific spectral range including at the molecular finger printing around 10$~\mu$m as well as at longer THz wavelengths where secondary molecular structures can be revealed. This device offers high transmittance and a phase coverage of 0 to $2\pi$. The transmittance phase is tuned by varying the dimensions of the meta-atoms. To demonstrate wavefront engineering, we used a discretized spiraling phase profile to convert the incident Gaussian beam to vortex beam. To realize this, we divided the metasurface surface into eight angular sectors and chose eight different dimensions for the crosses providing successive phase shifts spaced by $\pi/4$ radians for each of these sectors. Photolithography and reactive ion etching (RIE) were used to fabricate these silicon crosses as the dimensions of these cylinders range up to few hundreds of micrometers. Bessel beams (BBs) appear immune to diffraction over finite propagation distances due to the conical nature of light propagation along the optical axis. This offers promising advantages in laser fabrication. However, BBs exhibit a significant intensity variation along the direction of propagation. We present a simple technique to engineer the axial intensity of the BB over centimeters-long propagation distances without expansion of the incoming laser beam. This method uses two diffractive optical elements (DOEs), one converts the input Gaussian intensity profile to an intermediate intensity distribution, which illuminates the second DOE, a binary axicon. BBs of desired axial intensity distribution over few centimeters length can be fabricated.

It has been proven that the intense tightly focused Gauss beam (GB) generates pressures in excess of a few TPa creating the novel super-dense phases of Aluminium and silicon [1-5]. Recently it was demonstrated that the Bessel beam (BB) focused inside sapphire produced the cylindrical void being two orders of magnitude larger than that generated by the GB [6-8]. Analysis of the experimental data presented below allows making the remarkable conclusions based solely on the void size measurements without any ad hoc assumptions about the interaction process. First, the void size is direct evidence of strong (>40%) absorption of the pulse energy. Second, it is a direct experimental evidence of the high-energy concentration in the central spike of the focus. The unique features of the intense Bessel beam interaction then allow understanding the experimental observation. This interaction generates early in the pulse time the spatial distribution of excited permittivity changing from positive to negative values. Then the light interacts with zero-real-permittivity surface, separating plasma and dielectric areas, which leads to high energy concentration near the axis of cylindrical focus up to several MJ/cm3 (pressure range of 4-8 TPa). The effect depends on the angle between the permittivity gradient and the field polarisation. High pressure generates intense cylindrical shock/ rarefaction waves, which led to formation of void and compressed shell. We demonstrate that the Bessel beam proves to be an effective tool for producing extreme pressure/temperature conditions on the laboratory tabletop. It appears that adjusting polarisation and permittivity gradient might be a novel way for increasing the maximum pressure. A water soluble amorphous form of silk was made by ultra-short laser pulse irradiation and detected by nanoscale IR mapping. An optical absorption-induced nanoscale surface expansion was probed to yield the spectral response of silk at IR molecular fingerprinting wavelengths with a high ~20 nm spatial resolution defined by the tip of the probe. Silk microtomed sections of 1-5 micrometers in thickness were prepared for nanoscale spectroscopy and a laser was used to induce amorphisation. Comparison of silk absorbance measurements carried out by table-top and synchrotron Fourier transform IR spectroscopy proved that chemical imaging obtained at high spatial resolution and specificity (able to discriminate between amorphous and crystalline silk) is reliably achieved by nanoscale IR. Three dimensional (3D) fast (< 0.5 hour) printing of micro-optical elements down to sub-wavelength resolution over 100 micrometers footprint areas using femtosecond (fs-)laser oscillator is presented. Using sub-1 nJ pulse energies, optical vortex generators made of polymerised grating segments with an azimuthally changing orientation have been fabricated in SZ2080 resist; width of polymerised rods was ~150 nm and period 0.6-1 micrometers. Detailed phase retardance analysis was carried out manually with Berek compensator (under a white light illumination) and using an equivalent principle by an automated Abrio implementation at 546 nm. Direct experimental measurements of retardance was required since the period of the grating was comparable (or larger) than the wavelength of visible light. By gold sputtering, transmission-type optical vortex generators were turned into reflective ones with augmented retardance, n.h defined by the form birefringence, n, and the height h = 2d where d is the thickness of the polymerised structure. Retardance reached 315 nm as measured with Berek compensator at visible wavelengths. Birefringent phase delays of 180 degrees (or half-wavelength) required for high purity vortex generators can be made based on the proposed approach. Photoacoustic signal enhancements were observed with a pair of time-delayed femtosecond pulses upon excitation of gold nanosphere colloidal suspension. A systematic experimental investigation of photoacoustic intensity within the delay time, t = 0 to 15 ns, was carried out. The results revealed a significant enhancement factor of ~2 when the pre-pulse energy is 20-30% of the total energy. Pre-pulse and main pulse energy ratios, E(1)p-pol. :E(2)s-pol. were varied to determine the optimal ratio that yields to maximum photoacoustic signal enhancement. This enhancement was ascribed to the initial stage of thermalization and bubble generation in the nanosecond time scale. Polarisation analysis of synchrotron THz radiation was carried out with a standard stretched polyethylene polariser and revealed that the linearly polarised (horizontal) component contributes up to 22 +/- 5% to the circular polarised synchrotron emission extracted by a gold-coated mirror with a horizontal slit inserted near a bending magnet edge. Comparison with theoretical predictions shows a qualitative match with dominance of the edge radiation. Grid polarisers 3D-printed out of commercial acrilic resin were tested for the polariser function and showed spectral regions where the dichroic ratio DR > 1 and < 1 implying importance of molecular and/or stress induced anisotropy.
