Purpose The purpose of this study is to describe latent classes explaining the innovation logic in the Finnish construction companies. Innovativeness is a driver of competitive performance and vital to the long-term success of any organisation and company. Design/methodology/approach Using finite mixture structural equation modelling (FMSEM), the authors have classified innovation logic into latent classes. The method analyses and recognises classes for companies that have similar logic in innovation activities based on the collected data. Findings Through FMSEM analysis, the authors have identified three latent classes that explain the innovation logic in the Finnish construction companies – LC1: the internal innovators; LC2: the non-innovation-oriented introverts; and LC3: the innovation-oriented extroverts. These three latent classes clearly capture the perceptions within the industry as well as the different characteristics and variables. Research limitations/implications The presented latent classes explain innovation logic but is limited to analysing Finnish companies. Also, the research is quantitative by nature and does not increase the understanding in the same manner as qualitative research might capture on more specific aspects. Practical implications This paper presents starting points for construction industry companies to intensify innovation activities. It may also indicate more fundamental changes for the structure of construction industry organisations, especially by enabling innovation friendly culture. Originality/value This study describes innovation logic in Finnish construction companies through three models (LC1–LC3) by using quantitative data analysed with the FMSEM method. The fundamental innovation challenges in the Finnish construction companies are clarified via the identified latent classes.

Tiivistelmä. Tämän tutkielman aiheena on pienryhmätoiminnan vaikutukset erityisherkkään lapseen varhaiskasvatuksessa. Tämä aihe on tutkimuksen arvoinen, sillä syntyvistä lapsista noin 20–35 prosenttia on erityisherkkiä, enkä ole törmännyt tutkimukseen, jossa käsiteltäisiin nimenomaan pienryhmätoiminnan vaikutuksia erityisherkkään lapseen varhaiskasvatuksessa. Tavoitteeni tutkielmassani on selvittää, mitä vaikutuksia pienryhmätoiminnalla on erityisherkkään lapseen. Tutkielmani on toteutettu kuvailevana kirjallisuuskatsauksena, jonka takia aiheen tiukka rajaaminen on ollut tarpeellista. Tehdessäni tutkielmaa kirjallisuuskatsauksena, olen käyttänyt aikaisempia tutkimuksia ja aineistoja erityisherkkyydestä sekä pienryhmätoiminnasta ja muodostanut tutkielmani niiden väliseen vuoropuheluun. Tutkielmassani käytetyt aineistot ovat pääosin 2000- luvun jälkeen tuotettuja. Joitakin aikaisemmin tehtyjä teoksia tutkielmassani esiintyy, mutta ne ovat olleet relevantteja tutkielmani tulosten kannalta, eivätkä ne ole sisältänyt vanhentunutta tietoa. Tutkielmani tuloksissa esiin nousee pienryhmätoiminnan hyödyt sekä kritiikki erityisherkän lapsen näkökulmasta. Hyötyjä ovat muun muassa melun vähäisyys, lapsen yksilöllisen huomioimisen lisääntyminen, yksilöllinen havainnoiminen helpottuminen, erityisherkän lapsen ylivirittyneisyys tilat vähenevät, sekä lapsen itsetunto paranee. Kritiikkinä nousi vakiintuneiden pienryhmien sisällä tulevat yhteentörmäykset, eriarvoisuus, varhaiskasvatushenkilöstön motivoituneisuus, jokainen varhaiskasvatuksen henkilöstö ei voi tutustua kaikkiin lapsiin, pienryhmätoiminta ei opeta erityisherkkää lasta olemaan isoissa ryhmissä, varhaiskasvatuksen henkilöstön haasteet päästä tauoille ja sen vaikutukset heidän työskentelyynsä.

Tiivistelmä Lähtökohdat: Tulevaisuudessa liikkuvien palveluiden toteuttaminen edellyttää liikkuvassa yksikössä tarvittavan osaamisen tarkempaa määrittelyä. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, millaista osaamista suuhygienistit kokevat tarvitsevansa liikkuvassa hammashoitoyksikössä. Menetelmät: Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin teemahaastattelemalla eri kuntien ja yksityisten toimijoiden palveluksessa toimivia suuhygienistejä (N=9). Aineisto analysoitiin laadullisella sisällönanalyysillä. Tulokset: Suuhygienistien työssä tarvittavaa osaamista kuvaavia tekijöitä olivat hammashoitotyön osaaminen, jatkuva ammatillinen kehittyminen, yhteistyöosaaminen sekä johtamis- ja yrittäjyysosaaminen. Suuhygienistien osaamisen kehittämiseen vaikuttavia tekijöitä olivat toimintaympäristö sekä työyhteisön osaamisen kehittäminen ja jatkuva oppiminen. Johtopäätökset: Suuhygienistien osaamisen systemaattiseen määrittelyyn sekä osaamisen arviointiin ja kehittämiseen tulisi kiinnittää huomiota myös jatkossa sekä arvioida koulutuksen tuottaman osaamisen vastaavuutta työelämän tarpeisiin.

Aim: To test a model of clinical learning that focuses on the role of the ward manager. Background: The ward manager’s role in supporting clinical learning indirectly focuses on the ward climate connected to students’ clinical placements. In this way, the ward manager influences both nursing care and the pedagogical atmosphere in the ward. Design: Cross-sectional, secondary analysis. Methods: The sample included nursing and midwifery students (N = 5,776, n = 1,900) who had completed their clinical placement. Data were collected with the Clinical Learning Environment, Supervision and Nurse Teacher scale. Structural equation modelling was adopted to test the hypotheses. During clinical practice, students become acquainted with the key work tasks associated with their professions. Students need more support from healthcare educators during clinical practice learning, particularly in challenging situations. This study aimed to describe healthcare educators’ experiences of challenging situations during clinical practice placements. A qualitative study design was used to collect data through interviews with ten healthcare educators from two higher education institutions. The data were analyzed with inductive content analysis. The SRQR reporting guidelines were used to improve the transparency of the study. Educator reactions commonly involved emotional, goal-oriented and pedagogical support towards their students. The interviewed educators felt that mentors — when facing a challenging situation during clinical practice — are tasked with creating an atmosphere that supports student learning. Students faced challenges that were related to self-evaluation, goal-oriented activities, and their attitudes towards feedback. The building of a safe clinical learning environment involves collaboration between students, their clinical mentors and educators.

Aims: The aim of this umbrella review was to establish recent evidence on integration strategies and models to support transition and adaptation of culturally and linguistically diverse nursing staff into healthcare environments. Design: Umbrella review conducted according to Joanna Briggs institute guidelines. Data sources: Data were collected from CINAHL, PubMed, Medic, ProQuest and Scopus electronic databases in 2021. Review methods: Two researchers simultaneously screened studies’ eligibility by title, abstract and full text. Quality appraisal for the selected studies was assessed according to Joanna Briggs institute critical appraisal. Data were synthesized by conducting content analysis. Results: Twenty-seven reviews were included in the final synthesis. Strategies and models for supporting the transition and adaptation of culturally and linguistically diverse nursing staff into healthcare environments were structured as intra-organizational, sociocultural, and professional development. Intra-organizational strategies and models were unique to a particular organization and included policies and support, diversity, collegial and peer support, employee treatment and workplace environment. Sociocultural strategies and models addressed social, cultural and group dynamics using cultural training, learning and support, social support and friendships, language and communication, and personal skills development. Professional development enhanced nursing competence, ability to practice and workplace professional development. This was supported through licensure and orientation to work, career and competence development, and workplace mentorship and preceptorship. Conclusions: There is a need to understand culturally and linguistically diverse nurses’ needs and motivation to integrate, which is essential toward developing efficient integrational strategies and models. Strategies and models also need to support cultural and personal competence development of native nurses to aid efficient integration of culturally and linguistically diverse colleagues. Future studies can evaluate nursing workforce shortages and their implications on integration process.

Purpose: This study aims to explicate the behavioral factors that determine willingness to share personal health data for secondary uses. Design/methodology/approach: A theoretical model is developed and tested with structural equation modeling using survey data from Finland. Findings: It is shown that attitude toward information sharing is the strongest factor contributing to the willingness to share personal health information (PHI). Trust and control serve as mediating factors between the attitude and willingness to share PHI. Research limitations/implications: The measures of the model need further refinement to cover the various aspects of the behavioral concepts. Practical implications: The model provides useful insights into the factors that affect the willingness for information sharing in health care and in other areas where personal information is distributed. Social implications: Sharing of PHI for secondary purposes can offer social benefits through improvements in health-care performance. Originality/value: A broad-scale empirical data gives a unique view of attitudes toward sharing of PHI in one national setting.

Tiivistelmä Ohjattu harjoittelu on keskeinen osa sairaanhoitajaopintoja. Harjoittelun ohjaajien ohjausosaaminen on tärkeää opiskelijoiden tehokkaan oppimisen mahdollistamiseksi. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli kuvata ja vertailla opiskelijaohjaajien itsearvioimaa opiskelijaohjausosaamista ohjatussa harjoittelussa viidessä eri Euroopan maassa. Tämä tutkimus on toteutettu poikkileikkaustutkimuksena, jonka aineisto on kerätty terveydenhuollon organisaatioista opiskelijoita ohjaavilta sairaanhoitajilta Espanjasta, Italiasta, Liettuasta, Sloveniasta ja Suomesta (n=1604) vuosina 2016–2019. Aineisto kerättiin Opiskelijaohjausosaaminen-mittarilla, joka sisältää 43 väittämää, joista muodostettiin seitsemän summamuuttujaa: opiskelijaohjauskäytännöt työyksikössä, ohjaajan ominaisuudet, ohjaajan motivaatio, ohjauksen tavoitteellisuus, reflektiivinen ohjauskeskustelu, opiskelijalähtöinen arviointi ja kehittävä palautteenanto. Aineisto analysoitiin tilastollisia menetelmiä käyttäen. Opiskelijaohjausosaamisen keskiarvot vaihtelivat välillä 3,30–3,63 (1=täysin eri mieltä — 4=täysin samaa mieltä). Parhainta osaaminen oli reflektiivisen ohjauskeskustelun osa-alueella ja heikointa osaaminen oli käytännöt työyksikössä osa-alueella. Slovenialaiset arvioivat osaamisensa parhaimmaksi ja italialaiset heikoimmaksi. Suomalaiset arvioivat osaamisensa toiseksi heikoimmaksi. Tutkimuksen tuloksia voidaan käyttää opiskelijaohjaajien ja heidän koulutuksensa kehittämisessä. Ohjaajien tulisi tuntea paremmin työyksikkönsä ohjauskäytännöt, kehittää arviointiosaamistansa ja huomioida tavoitteellisuus ohjauksessa. Ohjauskoulutuksen olisi hyvä vastata näihin osaamistarpeisiin. Abstract The mentoring competence in the clinical practice of five European countries Clinical practice is an essential part of nursing education. Mentoring competence of mentors is critical for nursing student’s practical learning. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to describe and compare how mentors self-evaluate their mentoring competence in the clinical practice of five European countries. The data was collected from mentors who are registered nurses working in healthcare organizations in five countries: Finland, Italy, Lithuania, Slovenia, and Spain during 2016–2019 (n=1604). Data was collected with Mentor Competence Instrument, which includes seven sum-variables and 43 items: mentoring practices in the workplace, mentor’s characteristics, motivation of the mentor, goal orientation in mentoring, reflection during mentoring, student-centered evaluation and constructive feedback. The data was analyzed using statistical methods. The averages of the mentor’s competence varied between 3,30–3,63 (1=completely disagree — 4=completely agree). The highest competence was in the area of reflection during mentoring, whereas the lowest competence was in the area of mentoring practices in the workplace. The Slovenian mentors evaluated their competence highest and Italians evaluated their competence lowest. Finnish mentors evaluated their competence second lowest. The results of this study can be used for developing a mentor’s competence and education. Mentors should be more aware of mentoring practices in the workplace, develop their evaluation skills and pay attention to goal orientation in mentoring. Mentor education should respond to these needs.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To examine registered nurses' self-evaluation of their competence in mentoring nursing students in clinical practice. BACKGROUND: Clinical mentors have significant roles and responsibility for nursing students' clinical learning. Moreover, the mentors' role is becoming increasingly important internationally, as the role of nurse teachers in mentoring students in clinical practice has declined. However, in most EU countries there are no specific educational requirements for clinical mentors, although they need targeted education to increase their competence in mentoring nursing students. DESIGN: The systematic review of quantitative studies was designed according to guidelines of the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination and PRISMA protocol. METHODS: Studies published during 2000-2019 that met inclusion criteria formulated in PiCOS format were systematically reviewed by three independent reviewers. CINAHL (Ebsco), PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus, ERIC and Medic databases were used to retrieve the studies. Three independent reviewers conducted the systematic review process. The studies were tabulated, thematically compared and narratively reported. RESULTS: In total, 16 peer-reviewed studies met the inclusion criteria. The studies identified various dimensions of mentors´ competence and associated environmental factors. Generally, participating mentors rated competences related to the clinical environment, mentoring, supporting students' learning processes and relevant personal characteristics fairly high. They also rated organisational practices in their workplaces, resources in the clinical environment and their mentor-student and mentor-stakeholder pedagogical practices, as respectable or satisfactory. CONCLUSION: The results indicate considerable scope for improving mentors' competence, particularly through enhancing organisational mentoring practices and relevant resources in clinical environments. RELEVANCE FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE: Pedagogical practices of mentors in relations with both students and stakeholders should be enhanced to improve future nurses' learning. This systematic review addresses a gap in knowledge of mentors' self-evaluated competence that could assist the formulation of effective educational programmes for mentors internationally and improving clinical environments.

Purpose: The study aims to investigate the psychological mechanism that motivates consumers to pay more for a preferred brand that reflects their actual or ideal self-concept, by examining the shift in attention between consumer’s present, future, and past moments. Design/methodology/approach: First, in a survey setting, the study identifies the relationship between temporal focus and self-congruence. Subsequently, we conduct three experiments to capture the effects of temporal focus on brand preference and willingness to pay (WTP). In these experiments, we manipulate consumers’ self-congruence and temporal focus. Findings: The findings show that consumers with a present focus (distant future and distant past foci) tend to evaluate a brand more preferably when the brand serves to reflect their actual (ideal) selves. However, in the absence of present focus consumers’ WTP is more for a brand that reflects their ideal selves. Research limitations/implications: The study does not have an actual measure on consumers’ WTP; instead we use single-item measure. Practical implications: This study sheds new light on branding strategy. The results suggest that authentic and aspirational branding strategies are relevant to publicly consumed products. Brand managers could incorporate consumers’ temporal focus into branding strategy that could significantly influence consumer preference and WTP for their brands. Originality/value: This study expands our understanding of brand usage imagery congruity by showing that temporal focus is an important determinant of self-congruence. In this regard, this study empirically investigates the relationship of temporal focus, self-congruence, brand preference, and WTP.

Due to educational reforms in Finland, the nurse teacher’s role is being reduced in mentoring of nursing students in the clinical practice. Students reported experiencing a lack of instruction and feeling abandoned in the clinical practice. The aim of this study was to describe nursing student experiences of mentoring by nurse teachers in clinical practice, as well as the benefits of digital technology in this context. Qualitative study design was used with semi-structured focus group interviews. Nursing students (n = 15) who had completed at least one clinical placement during their nursing education. Data were collected in autumn 2017 from two universities of applied sciences in northern Finland. The data were analyzed using inductive content analysis. Mentoring by nurse teacher was perceived as a key part of learning evaluation, integrating theoretical and practical knowledge, understanding the student’s role and emotional support. The results also revealed that mentoring can be improved by using digital technology. However, technology cannot completely replace face-to-face mentoring. The mentoring provided by nurse teachers plays an important role in the success of a nursing student’s clinical practice. Digital technology can be leveraged to enhance the learning experience when easy-to-use and ubiquitous applications are integrated into the clinical learning setting.

Nyky-yhteiskunnassa oppilaan ujous voi aiheuttaa hämmennystä kasvattajissa. Selittävänä tekijänä pidetään sosiaalisuuden ja ulospäin suuntautuneisuuden arvostamista yhä enenevissä määrin. Onkin aiheellista tutkia, mikä on ujon oppilaan asema nykypäivän koulukontekstissa. Koska aikuisten tekemät tulkinnat ujoudesta eivät ole välttämättä identtisiä lasten kanssa, olen kiinnostunut tutkimaan, miten oppilaat tulkitsevat ujoutta. Ujouden kuvataan tyypillisesti ilmenevän esimerkiksi vähäisenä puhumisena ja sosiaalisten tilanteiden välttelemisenä. Ujouteen liitetyt asiat ovat usein kielteisiä, vaikka ujouteen katsotaan liittyvän hyviäkin puolia. Mielenkiintoani lisäävät myös omat ujouden kokemukseni peruskouluajoilta. Tutkimukseni on metodologisiltaan lähtökohdiltaan laadullista tutkimusta narratiivisella otteella. Tutkimukseni noudattaa lapsinäkökulmaisen tutkimuksen periaatteita, sillä oppilaat ovat tutkimukseni tiedontuottajia. Aineistonkeruutapana toimivat eläytymismenetelmällisin keinoin tuotetut kirjoitelmat ja ryhmäkeskustelu. Tutkimukseeni osallistui kaksi luokkaa kahdelta eri alakoululta Itä-Suomesta. Molemmat luokat olivat yhdysluokkia, joissa oli sekä kolmas- että neljäsluokkalaisia. Aineisto on analysoitu narratiivien analyysilla aineistolähtöisen sisällönanalyysin keinoin. Eläytymismenetelmällä tuotetut kirjoitelmat avasivat mahdollisuuden analysoida ujouden ilmenemisen lisäksi ei-ujoutta. Tämä tarjosi oivallisen mahdollisuuden selvittää, miten oppilaat tulkitsevat ujouden vastakohtaa. Näin ollen tämä tutkimus tuo tutkimuskentälle esiin yhdenlaisen mallin ujouden vastakohdan tulkinnasta. Tutkimustulokset osoittivat, että oppilaat tulkitsivat ujouden ilmenevän vuorovaikutustilanteissa ja toimintatavoissa. Yksi merkittävimmistä tutkimustuloksista oli, että ujon oppilaan toimintaa rajoitti pelko, kun ei-ujon oppilaan toimintaa siivitti rohkeus. Yhteenvetona voi todeta, että oppilaat suhtautuivat kertomuksissaan myönteisesti ujouteen. Tutkimukseni tulokset haastavat pohtimaan sitä, arvostetaanko ja vaaditaanko sosiaalisuutta jo liikaa sekä koulumaailmassa että yhteiskunnassa.

Sediment microbes have a great potential to transform reactive N to harmless N2, thus decreasing wastewater nitrogen load into aquatic ecosystems. Here, we examined if spatial allocation of the wastewater discharge by a specially constructed sediment diffuser pipe system enhanced the microbial nitrate reduction processes. Full-scale experiments were set on two Finnish lake sites, Keuruu and Petäjävesi, and effects on the nitrate removal processes were studied using the stable isotope pairing technique. All nitrate reduction rates followed nitrate concentrations, being highest at the wastewater-influenced sampling points. Complete denitrification with N2 as an end-product was the main nitrate reduction process, indicating that the high nitrate and organic matter concentrations of wastewater did not promote nitrous oxide (N2O) production (truncated denitrification) or ammonification (dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium; DNRA). Using 3D simulation, we demonstrated that the sediment diffusion method enhanced the contact time and amount of wastewater near the sediment surface especially in spring and in autumn, altering organic matter concentration and oxygen levels, and increasing the denitrification capacity of the sediment. We estimated that natural denitrification potentially removed 3–10% of discharged wastewater nitrate in the 33 ha study area of Keuruu, and the sediment diffusion method increased this areal denitrification capacity on average 45%. Overall, our results indicate that sediment diffusion method can supplement wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) nitrate removal without enhancing alternative harmful processes. publishedVersion

This thesis presents a cyber physical system that mirrors and augments real world devices and their functionality in a virtual representation of the real world. The energy characteristics of real world devices are measured and presented in the virtual reality interface in real-time. The virtual reality interface augments the functionality of the real world system with virtual inputs and outputs. The system is designed and implemented using a multi-agent software model. The challenge of keeping real and virtual worlds synchronous and consistent is solved by introducing a synchronisation block. The synchronisation and consistency of the real and virtual worlds were evaluated from a technical perspective. Synchronisation was evaluated with timing measurements. They revealed that the system operated most of the time without breaking timing conditions. Still, there were at times larger delays which showed that the system was not synchronous all the time. Consistency was verified with empirical measurements of visually observable states. The responses of the system to the user actions were mainly consistent, although a malfunction leading to inconsistency between the states of virtual and real devices was found. The results demonstrate that the real world devices and their corresponding virtual representations are controlled synchronously and their visually observable states remain consistent. The thesis shows that it is feasible to augment a cyber-physical system with virtual objects, for example virtual sensors, which operate and interact synchronously with the real world system. The thesis concludes with a discussion on findings and future work. Reaalimaailman laitteiden energiatasoja mitataan ja ne esitetään virtuaalitodellisuuden rajapinnassa reaaliaikaisesti. Virtuaaliset sisään- ja ulostulot virtuaalitodellisuuden rajapinnassa täydentävät reaalimaailman järjestelmän toiminnallisuutta. Järjestelmä suunnitellaan ja toteutetaan moniagentti- ohjelmistomallia käyttäen. Reaali- ja virtuaalimaailmojen synkronisuuden ja yhdenmukaisuuden takaamisen tuoma haaste ratkaistaan työssä esitettävän synkronointilohkon avulla. Reaali- ja virtuaalimaailman synkronisuuden ja yhdenmukaisuuden arviointi tehtiin teknisestä näkökulmasta. Synkronointi arvioitiin ajoitusmittausten perusteella. Mittausten mukaan järjestelmä toimi pääsääntöisesti ajoitusvaatimusten puitteissa. Ajoittaisia ajoitusvaatimuksia rikkovia viiveitä kuitenkin esiintyi. Järjestelmän yhdenmukaisuus arvioitiin empiirisesti havainnoimalla järjestelmän silminhavaittavia tiloja. Järjestelmän vaste käyttäjän toimiin oli yhdenmukaista lukuunottamatta toimintahäiriötä, joka tietyissä olosuhteissa johti todellisuuden ja virtuaalimaailman esityksen epäyhdenmukaisuuteen. Tulokset osoittavat, että reaalimaailman laitteiden ja niitä vastaavien virtuaalisten esitysten ohjaus on synkronissa ja silminhavaittavat tilat pysyvät yhdenmukaisina. Työ osoittaa, että on mahdollista täydentää kyberfysikaalista järjestelmää virtuaalisilla objekteilla, esimerkiksi virtuaalisilla sensoreilla, jotka toimivat ja vuorovaikuttavat synkronisesti reaalimaailman järjestelmän kanssa. Työn lopuksi käsitellään esiinnousseita havaintoja ja järjestelmän parannusehdotuksia.

Strategy is the use of combats to accomplish the goal of the war, but because each war differs in terms of its background and motives, creating a universal strategy for military purposes may not be possible. The military can have one peacetime sourcing strategy, but their wartime strategy is highly situation dependent. If resources are not available in wartime, there may be enormous losses. Resources must be secured through an efficient peacetime sourcing strategy, which demands a high level of organizational ambidexterity. The military in Finland are known collectively as the Finnish Defence Forces, although here we refer to the organization here in the singular as the FDF. The FDF is highly dependent on private transportation, but is also an important driver trainer and buyer of logistics services. Because a transportation system is central to society’s basic services, and its functionality is important for citizens, the private sector, securing vital functions of the nation and for emergency supply security. There is strong mutual dependency between the private transportation sector and the FDF, which makes for an interesting context in which to study also strategic partnerships. The articles included in this thesis consist of two quantitative data sets. The first empirical data set was gathered from the LSP members of the Finnish Transport and Logistics (460 acceptable responses, 17.7 per cent). The second data set was collected from the military, the security-related public sector and private industrial companies (149 acceptable responses, 18.01 per cent). The analyses include descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling. The purpose of this study is to reveal possible problems and offer insights into the cooperation between the private transportation sector and the FDF, and the development of organizational ambidexterity in the FDF’s supply chain management. From a game theory perspective, how the FDF enhance supply security is important because the private transportation sector is extremely important for the FDF and vice versa. Logistics strategy influences direct logistics costs, so the FDF has a lesson to learn from its own practices, concentrating on quality instead of direct cost reductions considerably reduces total logistics costs while improving domestic transportation resources. Tiivistelmä Strategia on taistelujen ohjausta sodan tavoitteiden saavuttamiseksi, mutta koska jokainen sota eroaa taustoiltaan ja motiiveiltaan, lienee universaalin strategian luominen sotilaallisiin tarkoituksiin mahdotonta. Armeijalla voi olla yksi rauhanajan hankintastrategia, mutta sota-ajan hankintastrategia on voimakkaasti olosuhteista riippuvainen. Sota-ajan resurssien saanti on kuitenkin pyrittävä turvaamaan jo rauhanajan hankintastrategialla, mikä vaatii korkeaa organisaatiollista kaksikätisyyttä, koska sota-ajan puuttuvan resurssit voivat aiheuttaa valtavia menetyksiä. Suomessa Puolustusvoimat on erittäin riippuvainen yksityisen sektorin kuljetusyrityksistä, mutta toisaalta Puolustusvoimat on erittäin merkittävä kuljettajien kouluttaja sekä kuljetusyritysten asiakas. Suomessa kuljetukset ovat myös keskeisessä asemassa yhteiskunnan julkisten perustoimintojen turvaamisessa, lisäksi ne ovat erittäin tärkeitä kansalaisten, yksityisen sektorin ja huoltovarmuuden kannalta. Näin ollen kuljetusyritysten ja Puolustusvoimien välillä on vankka keskinäinen riippuvuus, jonka vuoksi ne ovat hyvä konteksti tutkia strategisia kumppanuuksia. Tähän väitöskirjaan sisältyvät tieteelliset aikakausilehtiartikkelit rakentuvat kahden tutkimusaineiston ympärille. Ensimmäinen tutkimusaineisto on kerätty Suomen Kuljetus ja Logistiikka (SKAL ry) yhdistyksen jäseniltä (460 hyväksyttyä vastausta edusten 17.7 prosenttia valitusta kohderyhmästä). Toinen tutkimusaineisto on kerätty Puolustusvoimien ja muun julkisen turvallisuussektorin (poliisi, sairaanhoito ja palolaitokset) logistiikkapalveluiden hankinnasta vastaavilta henkilöiltä sekä soveltuvilta yksityisen sektorin toimijoilta (149 hyväksyttyä vastausta edustaen 18.0 prosenttia valitusta kohderyhmästä). Molemmat tutkimusaineistot ovat analysoitu kuvailevilla tilastollisilla menetelmillä sekä rakenneyhtälömallinnuksella. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on löytää mahdolliset ongelmat ja tarjota alalla toimivien henkilöiden näkemys Puolustusvoimien ja yksityisten kuljetusyritysten yhteistyöstä. Näiden myötä pyritään kehittämään Puolustusvoimien toimitusketjun hallinnan organisaatiollista kaksikätisyyttä. Peliteoreettisesta näkökulmasta on tärkeää kuinka puolustusvoimat parantamaan huoltovarmuutta koska kuljetusala ja Puolustusvoimat ovat erittäin merkittäviä toimijoita toisilleen. Koska ilmeisesti Puolustusvoimien logistiikkastrategia pyrkii vaikuttamaan pääasiassa suoriin kuljetuskustannuksiin, on Puolustusvoimilla opittavaa omista käytännöistään. Keskittymällä kuljetusten laatuun suorien kuljetuskustannusten sijasta voidaan logistiikan kokonaiskustannuksia alentaa ja samalla turvata kotimaisten kuljetusresurssien säilymistä.

The fundamental choice among governance mechanism is whether to externally organize transactions outside the boundary of the firm in the market, or whether to internally organize transactions within the firm’s boundaries. In other words, major decision which is made on the firm’s organizational strategy culminates in the make-or-buy decisions. In business and especially in the context of logistics, the worldwide usage and importance of outsourcing has grown dramatically over the last decades and researchers have reported on the outsourcing of logistics functions from several perspectives and a growing interest towards outsourcing is indicated by the volume of writings on the subject in scholarly journals, trade publications and popular magazines. The theoretical framework in outsourcing studies has commonly been the theory of the firm in microeconomics, transaction cost theory, agency theory, marketing or strategic management. However, according to recent studies it seems that several perspectives are needed when studying the development of relationships and the antecedents that underlie outsourcing decisions. Hence, in this study, concepts will be used from several theoretical backgrounds to get an eclectic view of outsourcing. The main research question is to study how the buyers’ logistics outsourcing decisions contribute to the accomplishment of goals in business networks. Empirical part of thesis contains two data sets. First data were collected in November 2005 and the target group in this data was northern Finnish companies. Totally 161 acceptable responses were received, corresponding to a 27.4 percent response rate. The second data were collected from industrial companies in Finland during spring 2008. In the second data, 235 acceptable responses were returned, representing a response rate of 22.5 percent. As a result, a two dimensional model was created for describing outsourcing relationships in the logistics service markets. On the one hand, network economies can be gained through horizontal mode of outsourcing, where focus is in unit costs of services and the way to achieve lowest possible unit costs are short-term bidding games among service providers. On the other hand, network economies can be achieved through vertical mode of outsourcing with cooperation and strategic partnership where all participants concentrate on their core competences and thus create network economies through transactional value in long-term. In the middle are hybrid modes of outsourcing where focus is on both unit costs of services and transaction costs. These outsourcing modes are where the outsourcing strategies arise and in this way, the thesis contributes to theoretical development of outsourcing phenomenon and concepts behind logistics outsourcing decision making.
