With global warming, heat stress has been recognized as a significant factor limiting grapevine development and fruit quality. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small non-coding RNAs known to play crucial regulatory roles in stress resistance. Hence, there is an immediate requirement to cultivate and identify grapevine varieties that are resistant to heat and explore miRNA-mediated heat stress defense mechanisms. In this study, we assessed the thermal resistance of 38 grape germplasm resources and identified a series of miRNAs involved in heat stress resistance. The CK (25°C) and HS (45°C) groups of “Shenyue” cuttings of grapes were used as experimental materials for next-generation sequencing and construct libraries of small RNAs. A total of 177 known and 20 novel miRNAs were detected in the libraries. Differential expression analysis identified 65 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) using the DE-Seq procedure. Furthermore, RT-qPCR validation confirmed complementary expression profiles of eight DEMs and their target genes between the HS and CK groups. Heterologous transformation further identified the function of Vvi-miR3633a downregulated under heat stress in Arabidopsis. In the heterologous expression lines, the survival rate was reduced by high temperature treatment indicating the ability of Vvi-miR3633a to regulate heat resistance. Assessing the heat resistance of grape species and the expression patterns of miRNA in response to high temperatures may reveal the molecular processes of heat resistance regulation mediated by miRNA in grapes under heat stress.

ABSTRACT: Hybrid breeding has proven to enhance meat quality and is extensively utilized in goose breeding. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of research investigating the molecular mechanisms that underlie the meat quality of hybrid geese. In this study, we employed the Sichuan White Goose as the maternal line for hybridization with the Zhedong White Goose and Tianfu Meat Goose P3 line. We assessed the growth and slaughter meat quality performance of 10-wk-old hybrid offspring in comparison to Sichuan white goose purebred offspring. The results indicate that hybrid geese have significantly improved performance in growth and slaughter meat quality. Furthermore, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the chest muscles of hybrid offspring through transcriptomics and metabolomics to unravel the effects of hybrid breeding on growth and meat quality. A total of 673 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), and 93 differentially expressed metabolites were identified. The joint analysis highlighted the significant enrichment of DEGs AMPD1, AMPD3, RRM2, ENTPD3, and the metabolite UMP in the nucleotide metabolism pathway. These findings underscore the crucial role of these genetic and metabolic factors in regulating muscle growth and meat quality in hybrid populations.

Exploring approaches to improve rural household well-being has always been an important task. This research investigates the effect of Internet use on rural household well-being measured by household consumption diversity, utilizing the 2016, 2018, and 2020 China Family Panel Studies survey data. To assess rural household consumption diversity, we employ the Simpson index and Shannon−Weaver index. To address the endogeneity of Internet use, we regress an instrumental variable-based two-stage least square (2SLS) method. The results show that Internet use substantially improves rural household consumption diversity. The disaggregated analysis suggests that low-income and small households in Central China benefit the most in consumption diversity improvement from using the Internet. Moreover, the mechanism analysis results show that household deposits and households’ beliefs about accessing commercial activities can positively mediate the relationship between Internet use and consumption diversity of rural household. Our findings provide new evidence for the literature on the role of Internet use in improving household consumption diversity in rural China.

Objective: To investigate the anatomical basis and clinical application value of the modified neck-shoulder technique based on membrane autopsy in laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal prosthesis (TEP) for tension-free repairs of indirect inguinal hernia. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed the clinical data of 136 patients with indirect inguinal hernia who underwent laparoscopic TEP for tension-free repairs at the Department of Gastroenterological Surgery Unit 1, the First Hospital of Putian City, Fujian Province from June 2017 to June 2020. The patients were divided into the modified neck-shoulder technique group (68 cases) and the traditional surgery group (68 cases), according to the different surgical methods. The intraoperative and postoperative conditions of the two groups were compared. Results: Both the modified neck-shoulder technique group and the traditional surgery group completed the herniorrhaphy. Abstract Background Metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) is involved in regulating integrative brain function and synaptic transmission. Aberrant mGluR5 signaling and relevant synaptic failure play a key role in the initial pathophysiological mechanism of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The study aims to investigate the association between mGluR5 availability and AD’s biomarkers and cognitive function. Methods We examined 35 individuals with mGluR5 tracer [18F]PSS232 to assess mGluR5 availability, and with [18F]Florbetapir PET to assess global amyloid deposition, and [18F]FDG PET to assess glucose metabolism. The plasma neurofilament light (NfL) and p-tau181 levels in a subset of individuals were measured (n = 27). The difference in mGluR5 availability between the AD and normal control (NC) groups was explored. The associations of mGluR5 availability with amyloid deposition, glucose metabolism, gray matter volume (GMV), neuropsychological assessment scores, and plasma biomarkers were analyzed. Results The mGluR5 availability was significantly reduced in AD patients’ hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus compared to NCs. Global amyloid deposition was positively associated with mGluR5 availability in the AD group and reversely associated in the NC group. The mGluR5 availability was positively correlated with regional glucose metabolism in the overall and stratified analyses. The availability of mGluR5 in the hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus demonstrated a strong relationship with the GMV of the medial temporal lobe, plasma p-tau181 or NfL levels, and global cognitive performance. Conclusions [18F]PSS232 PET can quantify the changes of mGluR5 availability in the progression of AD. mGluR5 availability correlated not only with neuropathological biomarkers of AD but also with neurodegenerative biomarkers and cognitive performance. mGluR5 may be a novel neurodegenerative biomarker, and whether mGluR5 could be a potential therapeutic target for AD needs to be further studied.

The grapevine, a globally significant fruit and an essential fruit tree species in China, is vulnerable to the adverse effects of high temperatures. Understanding the roles of microRNA and transcription factors in plant development and stress resistance is crucial for mitigating the impact of high temperature on grape growth and yield. This study investigates the response of miRNA to high-temperature stress in grape leaves. The expression level of Vvi-miR3633a was found to be inhibited under heat treatment in both Thompson seedless and Shen yue varieties, while its potential target genes (Vv-Atg36 and Vv-GA3ox2) were induced. Through transgenic overexpression experiments, it was demonstrated that Vvi-miR3633a plays a role in thermal response by affecting the expression of target genes. Furthermore, under heat stress conditions, overexpression of Vvi-miR3633a in grape callus decreased heat resistance compared to the control group (CK). The study also revealed that the target genes of Vvi-miR3633a regulate the expression of oxidase synthesis genes VvSOD and VvCAT, leading to reduced oxidase synthesis which may compromise the oxidation system. Additionally, the expression level of heat shock proteins in the transgenic lines was changed compared to the control (CK). Overall, this research provides valuable insights into understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in different crossing/breeding programs to produce heat-resistant grape varieties. Such varieties can be appropriate to propagate in warm climate areas with high temperature conditions.

Abstract Skin cutaneous melanoma (SKCM) constitutes a malignant cutaneous neoplasm characterized by an exceedingly unfavorable prognosis. Over the past years, necroptosis, a manifestation of inflammatory programmed cell demise, has gained substantial traction in its application. However, a conclusive correlation between the expression of necroptosis-related genes (NRGs) and SKCM patient's prognosis remains elusive. In this endeavor, we have undertaken an integrative analysis of genomic data, aiming to provide an exhaustive evaluation of the intricate interplay between melanoma necroptosis and immune-infiltration nuances within the tumor microenvironment. Through meticulous scrutiny, we have endeavored to discern the prognostic potency harbored by individual necroptosis-associated genes. Our efforts culminated in the establishment of a risk stratification framework, allowing for the appraisal of necroptosis irregularities within each afflicted cutaneous melanoma patient. In order to analyze the permeation law of different gases in gangue mountain, the structural models of gas molecules such as SO2, NO2, O2, N2 and O3 as well as coal and gangue slit were constructed, and the grand canonical Monte Carlo method and molecular dynamics simulation method were used to calculate the permeation of five gas molecules in coal and gangue slit model under different environment conditions. The results show that the total energy of gas molecules adsorbed on two models increases with pressure and then tends to level off, and each gas molecule is mainly physically adsorbed, and the order of the strongest adsorption capacity is in the order of SO2>O2>O3>N2>NO2, with the strongest adsorption of SO2 and the strongest diffusion of NO2. By comparing the mixing and diffusion effects among the gases, it was found that the aggregation phenomenon occurred among the molecules of each gas after mixing, and the concentration distribution and the size of the permeation coefficient followed that O2+N2+SO2+NO2+O3>SO2+NO2+O3>O2+N2>single component gas, indicating that there is a certain interaction between the gas molecules, which facilitates the diffusion, weakens the adsorption and finally enhances the inter-gas permeability. At the same time, it also confirms that the more components of the gas mixture, the stronger the permeation effect of each gas molecule.

This paper searches $ A $-optimal designs for mixture polynomial models when the errors are heteroscedastic. Sufficient conditions are given so that $ A $-optimal designs for the complex mixture polynomial models can be constructed from the direct sum of $ A $-optimal designs for their sub-mixture models with different structures of heteroscedasticity. Several examples are presented to further illustrate and check optimal designs based on $ A $-optimality criterion.

The slope has the typical deformation failure and instability characteristics under the interaction of natural and human factors which has been given a lot of attention in geotechnical and mining engineering. During highwall mining, in particular, deformation evolution characteristics and failure mode are more complex under dual influence of open pit mine and underground mine. Physical modelling is an important means to study the characteristics and behavior of deformation and evolution of various types of rock and soil mass, and it is also an important supplement to the field study of large-scale rock and soil mass. It is widely used in mines and geotechnical engineering. The determination of the material used for physical modeling is the foundation and key links of research. Therefore, the article firstly selected river sand/aggregate, lime and gypsum/cemented material as the experimental materials through the relevant literature review and based on the principle of economic and convenience, and adopted two proportioning schemes to make standard specimens. The uniaxial compression test was carried out to compare and analyze the strength of the original rock, and it was determined that the scheme 2 could be used as the research scaling number of the physical modelling; Secondly, on the basis of determining the material proportion, the physical and structural model of highwall mining is established, and the analysis shows that the evolution characteristics of slope deformation and failure in the process of highwall mining can be divided into superficial transformation stage, structural transformation stage and aging deformation stage, the deformed and damaged rock mass can be divided into “vertical three zones”, namely caved zone, fractured zone and continuous bending zone. According to the length of the panel, the coal seam can be divided into three stages: initial stage, middle stage and final stage. The lower coal seam can be divided into two stages: the initial stage and the final stage. The evolution of the slope rock mass due to the extraction of the upper coal seam to the stopping line is characterized by the formation of subsidence faded areas along the center of the goaf to both sides, and finally a symmetrical distribution of semi-“pyramid” shape is formed. The rock mass that is deformed and damaged due to the extraction of the lower seam to the mining stop line is in a semi-curve-like shape; Finally, based on the analysis of physical modelling and field monitoring, it is concluded that when the upper coal seam of the highwall coal seam is mined to about 120 m, the slope shows a slight instability. When the lower coal seam is mined to about 120 m, the goaf between the upper and lower coal seams is connected, and the instability is intensified until the mining reaches the stopping line. In the upper part of the slope, 1400 step forms a local collapse instability zone pointing to the open-pit, while the rest of the step are anti-dip instability pointing to the goaf.

The Te-based glass powder exhibits distinctive characteristics such as a low melting temperature and high chemical stability, rendering it a focal point of research in the realm of glass powder applications for solar cells. In this investigation, a pioneering Ge-containing Te-based lead-free glass powder was synthesized, and the influence of GeO2 content on critical parameters such as glass transition temperature (Tg), high-temperature fluidity, high-temperature wettability, acid and alkali resistance, as well as the network structure of the glass, was systematically explored. At an optimal GeO2 content of 8%, the glass powder displayed the lowest Tg (437°C), accompanied by a subdued crystallization reaction. The high-temperature fluidity and wettability exhibited favorable characteristics, indicating that the inclusion of GeO2 in the glass powder resulted in an enhanced interface contact. Building upon this foundation, techniques to augment the Ag+ content within the glass powder were investigated, along with the interaction between Ag+ and the SiNx anti-reflection layer or silicon on the surface of crystalline silicon solar cells. It was discerned that the Ag+ content in the glass powder significantly influences the deposition of silver microcrystals on the surface of crystalline silicon, thereby impacting the contact resistance of the solar cell. Then influences the series resistance and photoelectric conversion efficiency of the solar cell.

This study is devoted to analyzing the effects of outsourcing machinery-intensive farming activities vis-à-vis using mechanized equipment in-house on pesticide use, utilizing cross-sectional data collected from rice farmers in Jiangsu province, China. The control function approach is utilized to address the endogeneity of the decision to outsource pesticide application or complete the task in-house. Our results suggest that outsourcing pesticide application decreases pesticide expenditure but in-house application using mechanized equipment increases it. Specifically, outsourcing pesticide application reduces pesticide expenditure by about 81 yuan per mu or around 0.18 yuan per kilogram of rice produced. In comparison, the in-house application using mechanized equipment increases pesticide expenditure by 118 yuan per mu or by 0.14 yuan per kilogram of rice output. We also find that both outsourcing and in-house pesticide applications increase rice yield.

Abstract Background The genetic locus responsible for duck body size has been fully explained before, but the growth trait-related genetic basis is still waiting to be explored. For example, the genetic site related to growth rate, an important economic trait affecting marketing weight and feeding cost, is still unclear. Here, we performed genome wide association study (GWAS) to identify growth rate-associated genes and mutations. Result In the current study, the body weight data of 358 ducks were recorded every 10 days from hatching to 120 days of age. According to the growth curve, we evaluated the relative and absolute growth rates (RGR and AGR) of 5 stages during the early rapid growth period. GWAS results for RGRs identified 31 significant SNPs on autosomes, and these SNPs were annotated by 24 protein-coding genes. Fourteen autosomal SNPs were significantly associated with AGRs. In addition, 4 shared significant SNPs were identified as having an association with both AGR and RGR, which were Chr2: 11483045 C>T, Chr2: 13750217 G>A, Chr2: 42508231 G>A and Chr2: 43644612 C>T. Among them, Chr2: 11483045 C>T, Chr2: 42508231 G>A, and Chr2: 43644612 C>T were annotated by ASAP1, LYN and CABYR, respectively. ASAP1 and LYN have already been proven to play roles in the growth and development of other species. In addition, we genotyped every duck using the most significant SNP (Chr2: 42508231 G>A) and compared the growth rate difference among each genotype population. The results showed that the growth rates of individuals carrying the Chr2: 42508231 A allele were significantly lower than those without this allele. Moreover, the results of the Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis supported the idea that the growth rate and birth weight had a causal effect on the adult body weight, with the growth rate having a greater effect size. Conclusion In this study, 41 SNPs significantly related to growth rate were identified. In addition, we considered that the ASAP1 and LYN genes are essential candidate genes affecting the duck growth rate. The growth rate also showed the potential to be used as a reliable predictor of adult weight, providing a theoretical reference for preselection.

Abstract Visual interpretation is considered the gold standard for amyloid scans in clinical practice. However, dichotomous classification of amyloid deposition by visual reading always results in bias due to rater experience. Therefore, there is a need for a more lenient and flexible amyloid‐equivocal classification in clinical practice. A total of 461 participants were included in this study. Amyloid and glucose positron‐emission tomography was performed, and neuropsychological tests were evaluated. A disease‐specific deep‐learning method was used to identify amyloid equivocality. Amyloid deposition, glucose metabolism, and cognitive performance were analyzed and compared among amyloid‐positive, amyloid‐negative, and amyloid‐equivocal groups. Clinically diagnosed Alzheimer's disease individuals and subjects with normal cognition were used to create amyloid biomarker cut points to support the definition of equivocal amyloid deposition. A total of 139 amyloid‐equivocal individuals were identified by deep learning methods. They displayed intermediate amyloid deposition between that of amyloid‐positive (standardized uptake value ratio [SUVr]: 1.25 ± 0.10 vs. 1.47 ± 0.20, p < 0.001) and amyloid‐negative (SUVr: 1.25 ± 0.10 vs. 1.18 ± 0.07, p < 0.001) individuals. No difference in glucose metabolism or cognitive performance was observed between amyloid negativity and equivocality. Furthermore, the SUVr for the whole cortex, the precuneus, and the frontal lobe served as auxiliary criteria supporting the diagnosis of equivocal amyloid deposition. We also established a guide to assist in the interpretation of amyloid equivocality by visual reading with auxiliary criteria including two cut points and deep learning methods.

Eggs are a major animal protein source for humans. Egg formation is a complex process involved in coordinating various tissues and organs, while blood is necessary for gonad differentiation and egg formation. In this study, non-targeted metabolomics technology was employed to determine the serum metabolites at the time point of 70 days (before laying period, T0), 130 days (pre-laying period, T1), 300 days (peak laying period, T2), and 340 days (post laying period, T3) in female ducks, to provide comprehensive metabolic profiling in reflecting the overall temporal changes. The results showed significant differences in the metabolites of different comparison groups (T0 vs. T1, T2 vs. T3, and T0 & T1 vs. T2& T3), supporting the main physiological responses in ducks are differential among laying periods. L-Aspartic Acid, Biotin, and Thyroxine can be considered the potential biomarkers related to sexual maturity. L-Lysine, Lumichrome, Thiamine, Riboflavin, and Pyridoxine may be biomarkers related to egg formation. Sorbitol, Isorhamnetin, Naringenin, and Hydroxykynurenine were the biomarkers associated with the decline of egg production. In addition, the Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis showed that sexual maturity was mainly involved in the biosynthesis of secondary plant metabolites, Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle, Mineral absorption, pentose phosphate pathway, and Oxocarboxylic acid metabolism. Egg formation disturbed amino acid metabolism, vitamin metabolism, and carbohydrate metabolism. The neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction pathway may affect egg production. These findings can detect the different physiological statuses in female ducks and provide a theoretical basis for increasing egg production, and ensuring sustainable farming.Highlights The main physiological responses in ducks are differential among laying periods. 3, 6, and 4 biomarkers related to sexual maturity, the formation of the egg, and the decline of egg production, respectively. Sexual maturity was mainly involved in the biosynthesis of secondary plant metabolites, Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle, Mineral absorption, pentose phosphate pathway, and Oxocarboxylic acid metabolism, and egg formation disturbed amino acid metabolism, vitamin metabolism, and carbohydrate metabolism. while the neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction pathway may affect egg production.

A bifunctional electrocatalyst with high efficiency and low costs for overall water splitting is critical to achieving a green hydrogen economy and coping with the energy crisis. However, developing robust electrocatalysts still faces huge challenges, owing to unsatisfactory electron transfer and inherent activity. Herein, NiFe LDH/NiS2/VS2 heterojunctions have been designed as freestanding bifunctional electrocatalysts to split water, exhibiting enhanced electron transfer and abundant catalytic sites. The optimum NiFe LDH/NiS2/VS2 electrocatalyst exhibits a small overpotential of 380 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for overall water splitting and superior electrocatalytic performance in both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER). Specifically, the electrocatalyst requires overpotentials of 76 and 286 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for HER and OER, respectively, in alkaline electrolytes, which originate from the synergistic interaction among the facilitated electron transfer and increasingly exposed active sites due to the modulation of interfaces and construction of heterojunctions.

The investigation of conductive silver pastes and inks has witnessed extensive research within the domain of printed electronics in recent years, primarily owing to the exceptional electrical conductivity and steadfastness intrinsic to silver. This paper introduces an approach for the fabrication of stable, cost-effective, and low-resistance conductive silver paste tailored for flexible printed circuits. This method facilitates the solidification of the conductive silver paste into a highly conductive silver film at a curing temperature of 250 °C. In the process of preparing the conductive silver paste, Ag flakes is subject to modification through the incorporation of Ag NPs, which are subsequently sintered at a low temperature curing setting. The sintering of Ag NPs serves to establish connections between adjacent particles of Ag flakes within the paste, thereby enhancing the conductivity and flexibility of the resulting conductive printed silver film. When the ratio of Ag NPs to Ag flakes is maintained at 10:90, the volume resistivity of the Ag NPs-modified film registers at 2.7 × 10 ^−5 Ω.cm. This demonstrates a substantial 53.45% reduction in the volume resistivity of the conductive printed silver film modified with Ag NPs, compared to its Ag NPs-absent counterpart. Post 200 cyclic bending tests, it becomes evident that the resistance change rate in the Ag NPs-modified conductive printed silver film is a mere 12.5%, whereas the Ag NPs-modified silver film lacking Ag NPs displays a resistance change rate of 21.5%. This discrepancy underscores the capacity of Ag NPs-modified Ag flakes to fortify the bending resistance of the conductive printed silver film. Comprehensive data analysis substantiates that the improvements in electrical conductivity and bending resistance can be attributed to the superior bridging facilitated by the sintering process on the surface of the Ag NPs-modified Ag flakes.

Abstract Na+ superionic conductor (NASICON)‐structured Na4VMn(PO4)3 (NVMP) possesses stable cycling performance at 2.5–3.8 V by replacing V with lower cost Mn but suffers rapid capacity decay when further widening the voltage to 2.5–4.2 V, owing to a less stable V4+/V5+ redox couple. Herein, to stabilize the V4+/V5+ couple and improve the reversibility, a series of carbon‐coated NVMP (NVMP@C) with different V/Mn ratios are compared, among which, Na3.25V1.75Mn0.25(PO4)3@C delivers an additional reversible V4+/V5+ capacity of 7 mAh g−1 at the voltage of 3.9–4.2 V. Based on this, to further activate the capacity of V4+/V5+, Al‐doped Na3.25V1.75−yMn0.25Aly(PO4)3 structures are synthesized. When 0.5 Al is doped, 15 mAh g−1 capacity corresponding to V4+/V5+ can be released. In addition, it is found that the activation of V4+/V5+ is not conducive to electrochemical reversibility and C‐rate performance, owing to the shrinkage of the whole framework structure with the oxidization of V4+ to V5+.

Among the critical global crises curbing world development and sustainability, air quality degradation has been a long-lasting and increasingly urgent one and it has been sufficiently proven to pose severe threats to human health and social welfare. A higher level of model prediction accuracy can play a fundamental role in air quality assessment and enhancing human well-being. In this paper, four types of machine learning models—random forest model, ridge regression model, support vector machine model, extremely randomized trees model—were adopted to predict PM2.5 concentration in ten cities in the Jing-Jin-Ji region of north China based on multi-sources spatiotemporal data including air quality and meteorological data in time series. Data were fed into the model by using the rolling prediction method which is proven to improve prediction accuracy in our experiments. Lastly, the comparative experiments show that at the city level, RF and ExtraTrees models have better predictive results with lower mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), and higher index of agreement (IA) compared to other selected models. For seasonality, level four models all have the best prediction performances in winter time and the worst in summer time, and RF models have the best prediction performance with the IA ranging from 0.93 to 0.98 with an MAE of 5.91 to 11.68 μg/m3. Consequently, the demonstration of how each model performs differently in each city and each season is expected to shed light on environmental policy implications.

Abstract Background Mammalian sex chromosomes provide dosage compensation, but avian lack a global mechanism of dose compensation. Herein, we employed nanopore sequencing to investigate the genetic basis of gene expression and gene dosage effects in avian Z chromosomes at the posttranscriptional level. Results In this study, the gonad and head skin of female and male duck samples (n = 4) were collected at 16 weeks of age for Oxford nanopore sequencing. Our results revealed a dosage effect and local regulation of duck Z chromosome gene expression. Additionally, AS and APA achieve tissue-specific gene expression, and male-biased lncRNA regulates its Z-linked target genes, with a positive regulatory role for gene dosage effects on the duck Z chromosome. In addition, GO enrichment and KEGG pathway analysis showed that the dosage effects of Z-linked genes were mainly associated with the cellular response to hormone stimulus, melanin biosynthetic, metabolic pathways, and melanogenesis, resulting in sex differences. Conclusions Our data suggested that post transcriptional regulation (AS, APA and lncRNA) has a potential impact on the gene expression effects of avian Z chromosomes. Our study provides a new view of gene regulation underlying the dose effects in avian Z chromosomes at the RNA post transcriptional level.

Abstract Background Soil salinization is becoming an increasingly serious problem worldwide, resulting in cultivated land loss and desertification, as well as having a serious impact on agriculture and the economy. The indoleamine melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) has a wide array of biological roles in plants, including acting as an auxin analog and an antioxidant. Previous studies have shown that exogenous melatonin application alleviates the salt-induced growth inhibition in non-halophyte plants; however, to our knowledge, melatonin effects have not been examined on halophytes, and it is unclear whether melatonin provides similar protection to salt-exposed halophytic plants. Results We exposed the halophyte Limonium bicolor to salt stress (300 mM) and concomitantly treated the plants with 5 μM melatonin to examine the effect of melatonin on salt tolerance. Exogenous melatonin treatment promoted the growth of L. bicolor under salt stress, as reflected by increasing its fresh weight and leaf area. This increased growth was caused by an increase in net photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency. Treatment of salt-stressed L. bicolor seedlings with 5 μM melatonin also enhanced the activities of antioxidants (superoxide dismutase [SOD], peroxidase [POD], catalase [CAT], and ascorbate peroxidase [APX]), while significantly decreasing the contents of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide anion (O2 •−), and malondialdehyde (MDA). To screen for L. bicolor genes involved in the above physiological processes, high-throughput RNA sequencing was conducted. A gene ontology enrichment analysis indicated that genes related to photosynthesis, reactive oxygen species scavenging, the auxin-dependent signaling pathway and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) were highly expressed under melatonin treatment. These data indicated that melatonin improved photosynthesis, decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and activated MAPK-mediated antioxidant responses, triggering a downstream MAPK cascade that upregulated the expression of antioxidant-related genes. Thus, melatonin improves the salt tolerance of L. bicolor by increasing photosynthesis and improving cellular redox homeostasis under salt stress. Conclusions Our results showed that melatonin can upregulate the expression of genes related to photosynthesis, reactive oxygen species scavenging and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) of L. bicolor under salt stress, which can improve photosynthesis and antioxidant enzyme activities. Thus melatonin can promote the growth of the species and maintain the homeostasis of reactive oxygen species to alleviate salt stress.

Abstract Background STAT3 plays an important role in cervical cancer. LC3B, the most potential molecular biomarker of autophagy that may promote or inhibit cancer progression, can be downregulated by STAT3. However the role of STAT3 in the autophagy of cervical cancer remains unclear. Purpose This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between STAT3 and LC3B in protein level, and verify whether STAT3 promotes proliferation, migration and plate colony formation by inhibiting autophagy of cervical cancer cells through bcl2-beclin1 axis. Results STAT3 was overexpressed in cervical cancer tissues, and negatively correlated with the expression level of LC3B. STAT3 knockout or knockdown significantly increased the autophagy level and decreased proliferation, migration, plate colony formation and subcutaneous tumorigenesis of cervical cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. STAT3 is known to mediate autophagy through Bcl2-Beclin1 complex. Bcl2 was positively whereas Beclin1 negatively correlated with STAT3 expression, indicating that Bcl2-Beclin1 complex involved in this transition. Conclusion STAT3 may upregulate the autophagy level of cervical cancer cells through the Bcl2-Beclin1 axis. This indicates that STAT3 may be an important prognostic and therapeutic target for cervical cancer.

ABSTRACT: Egg weight is an important indicator of egg phenotypic traits, which directly affects the economic benefits of the poultry industry. In the present research, laying ducks were classified into high egg weight (HEW) and light egg weight (LEW) groups. To reveal the underlying mechanism that may be responsible for the egg weight difference, the integrated analysis of transcriptomes and serum metabolomics was performed between the two groups. The results showed extremely significant differences (P < 0.01) in the total egg weight at 300 d, and average egg weight between the HEW and LEW groups. 733, 591, 82, and 74 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in the liver, magnum, F1, and F5 (hierarchical follicles) follicle membrane, respectively. The candidate genes were screened further from the perspective of forming an egg. In terms of egg yolk formation, the functional analysis revealed fatty acid metabolism-related pathways account for 36% of the liver's top pathways, including fatty acid biosynthesis, folate biosynthesis, fatty acid metabolism, and glycerol lipid metabolism pathways. FASN gene was identified as the key candidate gene by comprehensive analysis of gene expression and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. In the follicle membrane, the DEGs were mainly enriched in protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum, and MAPK signaling pathway, and HSPA2, HSPA8, BAG3 genes were identified as crucial candidate genes. In terms of egg white formation, the functional analysis revealed protein metabolism-related pathways account for 40% of the magnum's top pathways, which includes protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum pathway. HSP90AA1 and HSPA8 genes were identified as key candidate genes. In addition, the integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis showed that arginine and proline metabolism pathways could contribute to differences in egg weight. Thus, we speculated that the potential candidate genes, regulatory pathways, and metabolic biomarkers mentioned above might be responsible for the egg weight difference. These findings might provide a theoretical basis for improving the egg weight of ducks.

Chemical contents, the important quality indicators are crucial for the modeling of sintering process. However, the lack of these data can result in the biasedness of state estimation in sintering process. It, thus, greatly reduces the accuracy of modeling. Although there are some general imputation methods to tackle the data lackness, they rarely consider the interoutputs correlation and the negative impacts caused by incorrect prefilling. In this article, a novel sparse multioutput Gaussian convolution process (MGCP) modeling framework is proposed for data imputation. MGCP can flexibly mine the relationships between the outputs by a convolution of a sharing latent function and different Gaussian kernels. Moreover, the penalization terms are designed to weaken the false relationship between these outputs. To generalize the MGCP to a long-period case, dynamic time warping term is introduced to keep the global similarity between the original and estimated time series. Compared with several existing methods, the proposed method shows great superiority in sintering raw material contents estimation with real-world data.

The rock will be damaged and destroyed when the external load reaches the bearing limit, which will be accompanied by complex AE signals and damage evolution laws. Therefore, in order to obtain the relationship between AE signal and damage evolution characteristics of rocks, 4 kinds of sandstones of a mine are used for AE test. Firstly, the porosity of 4 kinds of sandstone is tested. Secondly, the AE signal parameter characteristics of sandstone with different porosity are analyzed. Finally, the AE parameters obtained are combined with cellular automata and damage theory to analyze the damage evolution law and critical damage value of different sandstones. The results show that the pore size of the four sandstones is QSYX > QSYZ > FSYX > FSYZ. The loading process is divided into compaction stage, elastic deformation stage, and plastic deformation stage, with peak strengths of 46.92 MPa, 43.32 MPa, 57.87 MPa, and 54.31 MPa, respectively. Or the AE event rate, the missing area, missing parts and missing number are different. The QSYX missing area is larger than QSYZ and FSYZ; the macrocrack growth speed is also faster; and the signs of fracture are obvious. The number of FSYX missing is more than QSYX, QSYZ, and FSYZ. The first two missing parts are caused by internal defects; the last two missing parts are signs of fracture; QSYX, QSYZ, and FSYZ are shear failure, and FSYX is tensile failure. The damage evolution process of the four sandstones corresponds to the loading process one by one. The calm stage of damage corresponds to the compaction stage, the damage expansion stage corresponds to the elastic deformation stage, and the damage acceleration stage corresponds to the plastic deformation stage. The critical damage values are 0.438, 0.499, 0.576, and 0.476, respectively, which are higher than the critical damage values of the sandstone cell model of 0.43, indicating that when the damage values reach the critical value, instability exists and instability failure will occur with continuous load.

Abstract Background Accumulating evidence indicates that neuroinflammation (NI) significantly contributes to drug addiction, but the conversion of NI after drug withdrawal is not clear. Here, we conducted 18F-flutriciclamide (GE180) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging to investigate the conversion of NI during drug withdrawal and conditioning-induced aversion by measuring the change in microglial activation with 18F-GE180. Methods Twelve male adult Sprague–Dawley rats were subjected to morphine withdrawal by the administration of naloxone, and six of them were used to model conditioned place aversion (CPA). 18F-GE180 PET imaging was performed for 11 rats on the last day of the morphine treatment phase and for 10 rats on the response assessment phase of the behavior conditioning procedure. A 18F-GE180 template was established for spatial normalization of each individual image, and the differential 18F-GE180 uptakes between the drug withdrawal (DW) group and the drug addiction (DA) group, the CPA group and the DA group, and the CPA group and the DW group were compared by a voxel-wise two-sample t test using SPM8. Results Both the DW group and the CPA group spent less time in the conditioning cage during the post-test phase compared with the pretest phase, but only the difference in the CPA group was significant (63.2 ± 34.6 vs. − 159.53 ± 22.02, P

Public infrastructure, such as substations, is crucial for the advancement of the economy and society. However, the “not in my backyard” phenomenon is causing concern among the population, and these two things are at odds with one another. This study aims to investigate the driving mechanism that influences participation willingness of the public in order to promote the construction of substations, so the study proposes an integration model based on the planned behavior theory and the normative activation theory. Moreover, a structural equation model is created using the two dimensions, namely, social altruism and personal egoism, while data of 568 questionnaires are used for empirical research in combination with the “Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory” method; these data are collected in the surrounding areas of three 110kV substations in Jiaozuo city, China. The key factors that affect participation willingness of the public are discussed, and the study demonstrates that the model is most significantly impacted by public trust, which is an a priori variable. Furthermore, the direct path coefficient of personal norms on participation willingness is the largest, which confirms that increased moral responsibility has a beneficial effect on project execution, and subjective norms contribute to the improvement of the assessment model overall since they are the main variables with the largest centrality degree in the system. The findings of this research better our understandings about the mechanism of “not in my backyard” and offer practical implications for its dissolution. On the basis of this, we present pertinent policy proposals for the “not in my backyard” effect that develops during the construction of public infrastructure.

Recently, the development of cathode materials is becoming an important issue for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Compared with inorganic cathodes, the organic cathodes are developing rapidly, ascribing to their distinct merits in light weight, low cost, massive organic resources and high capacity. In this paper, a cost-efficiency naphthaldiimide (NDI) based derivative, 2,7-bis(2-((2-hydroxyethyl) amino) ethyl) benzo[lmn] [3,8] phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H, 7H)-tetraone (NDI-NHOH), was used as organic cathode in LIBs. The NDI-NHOH was synthesized easily via one-step process, and it showed very high thermal stability. Through mixing NDI-NHOH with acetylene black and polyvinylidene fluoride (weight ratio of 6:3:1) as composite cathode in lithium-metal based LIBs, the NDI-NHOH presented versatile electrochemical properties. From cyclic voltammetry (CV) test, it exhibited two reversible peaks for oxidation and reduction in the first cycle, respectively. Notably, the oxidation and reduction peaks were located at 2.54, 3.22 and 2.14, 2.32 V vs. Li+/Li, respectively. By employing NDI-NHOH as cathode, it demonstrated a specific capacity of about 80 mAh g−1 in the range of 1.5–3.5 V, where the batteries retained a capacity retention of 50% over 20 cycles. According to the LIBs study, it suggests that the NDI-NHOH-based derivative shows a potentially promising candidate as efficient organic cathode materials for high-performance metal-ions batteries.

Low-temperature lead-free silver pastes deserve thorough investigation for sustainable development and application of MgTiO3 ceramics in electronic devices. In this study, a series of Bi2O3-B2O3-ZnO-SiO2-Al2O3-CaO glasses with suitable softening temperatures were prepared via melt quenching using a type of micrometer silver powder formed by silver nanoparticle aggregates. The composite pastes containing silver powder, Bi2O3 glass powder and an organic vehicle were then screen-printed. The effects of glass powder concentration and sintering temperature on the microstructure of the surface interface were also investigated. The results showed that the silver paste for microwave dielectric ceramic filters (MgTiO3) possessed good electrical conductivity (2.28 mΩ/□) and high adhesion (43.46 N/mm2) after medium temperature (670 °C) sintering. Thus, this glass powder has great application potential in non-toxic lead-free silver pastes for metallization of MgTiO3 substrates.

The adverse effects of high temperatures on fruit quality and yield have been reported in many studies of grapevines. MiRNAs play crucial roles in plant growth and development and also fulfill functions in regulating the high-temperature response. In this research, miRNA-based SSR (simple sequence repeat) polymorphisms were analyzed according to the grape genome sequence and then combined with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and Sanger sequencing methods to analyze the miRNA-SSR diversity of different heat-resistant grape varieties. A statistical analysis of SSR sequences showed that 391 and 12 SSRs were specific to pri-miRNA and pre-miRNA, respectively. In pri-miRNA containing SSR, hexa-nucleotide repeats were the most abundant (52.69%), followed by tetra-nucleotide (13.04%) and minimum penta-nucleotide (4.09%), which were also observed in pre-miRNA sequences. On the other hand, differences in heat resistance among grape varieties were observed. Based on the results of leaf Fv/Fm images, values and phenotypic changes under high-temperature stress, 20 heat-resistant (e.g., Niagara Rosada and Grand Noir) and 20 heat-sensitive (e.g., Shine Muscat and Jumeigui) grape varieties were identified. Further, PCR-Sanger sequencing was used to screen SSR differences in four thermos-tolerant and four thermos-sensitive grape varieties, and finally, eight SSR differential primers were found to be able to distinguish these varieties. Of these, four pairs of primers were selected for validation in 40 grape germplasm resources (20 thermo-tolerance and 20 thermo-sensitivity). The VMIRSSR167c3 highlights that the ratio of SSR (CT) repeat values greater than 17 in heat-resistant varieties was 90%. In conclusion, the VMIRSSR167c3 marker can accurately distinguish between heat-resistant and heat-sensitive grape varieties. The results provide a novel molecular marker for the genetic improvement of grape germplasm resources and will be beneficial to the breeding of heat-resistant varieties in the future.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) serve as covalently closed single-stranded RNAs and have been proposed to influence plant development and stress resistance. Grapevine is one of the most economically valuable fruit crops cultivated worldwide and is threatened by various abiotic stresses. Herein, we reported that a circRNA (Vv-circPTCD1) processed from the second exon of the pentatricopeptide repeat family gene PTCD1 was preferentially expressed in leaves and responded to salt and drought but not heat stress in grapevine. Additionally, the second exon sequence of PTCD1 was highly conserved, but the biogenesis of Vv-circPTCD1 is species-dependent in plants. It was further found that the overexpressed Vv-circPTCD1 can slightly decrease the abundance of the cognate host gene, and the neighboring genes are barely affected in the grapevine callus. Furthermore, we also successfully overexpressed the Vv-circPTCD1 and found that the Vv-circPTCD1 deteriorated the growth during heat, salt, and drought stresses in Arabidopsis. However, the biological effects on grapevine callus were not always consistent with those of Arabidopsis. Interestingly, we found that the transgenic plants of linear counterpart sequence also conferred the same phenotypes as those of circRNA during the three stress conditions, no matter what species it is. Those results imply that although the sequences are conserved, the biogenesis and functions of Vv-circPTCD1 are species-dependent. Our results indicate that the plant circRNA function investigation should be conducted in homologous species, which supports a valuable reference for further plant circRNA studies.

Abstract Background Intracranial hemangiopericytoma is a rare disease and surgery is the mainstay treatment. Although postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy is often used, there are no reports comparing different radiotherapy techniques. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of post-operative radiotherapy and different radiotherapy technique on the results in patients with intracranial hemangiopericytoma (HPC). Methods We retrospectively reviewed 66 intracranial HPC patients treated between 1999 and 2019 including 29 with surgery followed by radiotherapy (11 with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and 18 with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)) and 37 with surgery alone. Chi-square test was used to compare the clinical characteristic between the groups. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to analyze overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS). Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine prognostic factors of survival. We also underwent a matched-pair analysis by using the propensity score method. Results The crude local control rates were 58.6% in the surgery plus post-operative radiotherapy group (PORT) and 67.6% in the surgery alone group (p = 0.453). In the subgroup analysis of the PORT patients, local controls were 72.7% in the IMRT group and 50% in the SRS group (p = 0.228). The median OS in the PORT and surgery groups were 122 months and 98 months, respectively (p = 0.169). The median RFS was 96 months in the PORT group and 72 months in the surgery alone group (p = 0.714). Regarding radiotherapy technique, the median OS and RFS of the SRS group were not significantly different from those in the IMRT group (p = 0.256, 0.960). The median RFS were 112 and 72 months for pathology grade II and III patients, respectively (p = 0.001). Propensity score matching did not change the observed results. Conclusion In this retrospective analysis, PORT did not improve the local control rates nor the survivals. The local control rates after IMRT and SRS were similar even though the IMRT technique had a much higher biological dose compared with the SRS technique.

ABSTRACT: The light intensity can affect the production performance of animals. The retina and pineal gland, closely linked, are directly photosensitive organs. This study evaluated the effect of light intensity on duck growth and investigated the effects of varying light intensities on retina and pineal gland transcriptome changes. The increase of light intensity will significantly decrease production performance, such as body weight, eviscerated weight, breast muscle weight, percentage of abdominal fat, etc. The RNA-seq revealed 967 and 201 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the retina and pineal gland under different light intensities, respectively. The Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) in the retina showed the DEGs were enriched in ECM-receptor interaction, Focal adhesion, Cell adhesion molecules (CAMs), Cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, Melanogenesis, etc. Meanwhile, the DEGs in the pineal gland were mainly enriched in pathways associated with the mTOR signaling pathway, melanin production pathway, etc. Our results indicated that different light intensities might affect the function of the retina and pineal gland, including the melanin production of the retina and the secretion of melatonin in the pineal gland. Our study can provide a theoretical basis for the molecular mechanism of the effects of different light intensities on the retina and pineal gland.

Abstract Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a class of short, usually positively charged polypeptides that exist in humans, animals, and plants. Considering the increasing number of drug-resistant pathogens, the antimicrobial activity of AMPs has attracted much attention. AMPs with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against many gram-positive bacteria, gram-negative bacteria, and fungi are an important defensive barrier against pathogens for many organisms. With continuing research, many other physiological functions of plant AMPs have been found in addition to their antimicrobial roles, such as regulating plant growth and development and treating many diseases with high efficacy. The potential applicability of plant AMPs in agricultural production, as food additives and disease treatments, has garnered much interest. This review focuses on the types of plant AMPs, their mechanisms of action, the parameters affecting the antimicrobial activities of AMPs, and their potential applications in agricultural production, the food industry, breeding industry, and medical field.

A synthetic method was developed to produce silver nanowires. The method utilized TBAC (tetrabutylammonium chloride) instead of conventional metal halides as crystal seed additives to obtain purer silver nanowires. Our synthesis strategy relies on accelerating the rate of seed–wire conversion. The method allows for the control of the nanowire aspect ratio by tuning the ratio of Ag+ ions to polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) monomer units and the molar mass of TBAC. The observed synthesis improvements meet the basic requirements of current industrial manufacturing.

Abstract Background Salt, a common environmental stress factor, inhibits plant growth and reduces yields. Melatonin is a pleiotropic molecule that regulates plant growth and can alleviate environmental stress in plants. All previous research on this topic has focused on the use of melatonin to improve the relatively low salt tolerance of glycophytes by promoting growth and enhancing antioxidant ability. It is unclear whether exogenous melatonin can increase the salt tolerance of halophytes, particularly recretohalophytes, by enhancing salt secretion from the salt glands. Results To examine the mechanisms of melatonin-mediated salt tolerance, we explored the effects of exogenous applications of melatonin on the secretion of salt from the salt glands of Limonium bicolor (a kind of recretohalophyte) seedlings and on the expression of associated genes. A pretreatment with 5 μM melatonin significantly improved the growth of L. bicolor seedlings under 300 mM NaCl. Furthermore, exogenous melatonin significantly increased the dry weight and endogenous melatonin content of L. bicolor. In addition, this treatment reduced the content of Na+ and Cl− in leaves, but increased the K+ content. Both the salt secretion rate of the salt glands and the expression level of genes encoding ion transporters (LbHTK1, LbSOS1, LbPMA, and LbNHX1) and vesicular transport proteins (LbVAMP721, LbVAP27, and LbVAMP12) were significantly increased by exogenous melatonin treatment. These results indicate that melatonin improves the salt tolerance of the recretohalophyte L. bicolor via the upregulation of salt secretion by the salt glands. Conclusions Our results showed that melatonin can upregulate the expression of genes encoding ion transporters and vesicle transport proteins to enhance salt secretion from the salt glands. Combining the results of the current study with previous research, we formulated a novel mechanism by which melatonin increases salt secretion in L. bicolor. Ions in mesophyll cells are transported to the salt glands through ion transporters located at the plasma membrane. After the ions enter the salt glands, they are transported to the collecting chamber adjacent to the secretory pore through vesicle transport and ions transporter and then are secreted from the secretory pore of salt glands, which maintain ionic homeostasis in the cells and alleviate NaCl-induced growth inhibition.

ABSTRACT: The cage rearing model of the modern poultry industry makes the bones of birds more vulnerable to deterioration. In this study, at 8 wk of age, a total of 60 birds were randomly allocated to 2 groups, including the floor rearing group (FRD) and cage rearing group (CRD), and their body weight was measured every 2 wk. At the age of 20 wk, the tibia, femur, and humerus were collected from each group (n = 12) to determine the bone quality parameters such as weight, size, bone mineral density (BMD), breaking strength, cortical thickness, and area, ash content, calcium (Ca) content, and phosphorus (P) content. Meanwhile, the serum metabolome composition of both groups was detected by untargeted metabolome technology. The results showed that there were no significant differences in body weight, bone weight, and size between the 2 groups (P > 0.05), but the humerus mineral density and the breaking strength, cortical bone thickness, cortical bone area percentage of tibia, femur, and humerus of CRD was significantly lower than those of FRD (P < 0.05), indicating that the cage rearing system caused the deterioration of bone quality. Based on nontarget metabolomics, 49 metabolites were correlated with bone quality parameters, and 10 key metabolites were strongly correlated, including erucic acid, citric acid, and ketoleucine. In addition, the KEGG analysis showed that the caged system mainly perturbed amino acid metabolism, lipid metabolism, and energy metabolism, which led to changes in related metabolite levels, produced ROS, and altering energy supply, thus leading to a deterioration of bone quality of cage rearing ducks. Therefore, our findings were helpful to further understand the potential mechanism of the deterioration of duck bone quality in cage rearing system, provided a theoretical basis for reducing the occurrence of poultry osteoporosis, and ensuring the healthy development of poultry breeding.

Abstract Composite solid electrolyte is a promising solution for the development of new generation of safe and high‐performance all‐solid‐state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). It combines both the advantages of inorganic electrolyte and organic polymer electrolyte, having high ionic conductivity, mechanical strength, good contact with the electrodes and high processability. In the recent decades, rare earth oxides have attracted wide attentions from researchers because of their high ionic conductivity. China is abundant in rare earth resources, so has a good chance to provide the world with high quality rare earth containing functional materials. This review paper focuses on the recent progress in the studies of composite solid electrolyte of polymer and rare earth containing lithium lanthanum zirconium and lithium lanthanum titanium oxides, and gains insights into the challenges in the field, and hopefully helps in the rational design of high performance electrolyte for the development of ASSLBs.

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a chronic disorder of the spinal cord. ROI-based features on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) provide additional information about spinal cord status, which would benefit the diagnosis and prognosis of CSM. However, the manual extraction of the DTI-related features on multiple ROIs is time-consuming and laborious. In total, 1159 slices at cervical levels from 89 CSM patients were analyzed, and corresponding fractional anisotropy (FA) maps were calculated. Eight ROIs were drawn, covering both sides of lateral, dorsal, ventral, and gray matter. The UNet model was trained with the proposed heatmap distance loss for auto-segmentation. Mean Dice coefficients on the test dataset for dorsal, lateral, and ventral column and gray matter were 0.69, 0.67, 0.57, 0.54 on the left side and 0.68, 0.67, 0.59, 0.55 on the right side. The ROI-based mean FA value based on segmentation model strongly correlated with the value based on manual drawing. The percentages of the mean absolute error between the two values of multiple ROIs were 0.07, 0.07, 0.11, and 0.08 on the left side and 0.07, 0.1, 0.1, 0.11, and 0.07 on the right side. The proposed segmentation model has the potential to offer a more detailed spinal cord segmentation and would be beneficial for quantifying a more detailed status of the cervical spinal cord.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder seen in age-dependent dementia. There is currently no effective treatment for AD, which may be attributed in part to lack of a clear underlying mechanism. Early diagnosis of AD is of great significance to control the development of the disease. Synaptic loss is an important pathology in the early stage of AD, therefore the measurement of synaptic density using molecular imaging technology may be an effective way to early diagnosis of AD. Synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A) is located in the presynaptic vesicle membrane of virtually all synapses. SV2A Positron Emission Computed Tomography (PET) could provide a way to measure synaptic density quantitatively in living humans and to track changes in synaptic density in AD. In view of the fact that synaptic loss is the pathology of both epilepsy and AD, this review summarizes the potential role of SV2A in the pathogenesis of AD, and suggests that SV2A should be used as an important target molecule of PET imaging agent for the early diagnosis of AD.

This paper is concerned with the parameter estimation of non-linear discrete-time systems from noisy state measurements in the state-space form. A novel sparse Bayesian convex optimisation algorithm is proposed for the parameter estimation and prediction. The method fully considers the approximation method, parameter prior and posterior, and adds Bayesian sparse learning and optimization for explicit modeling. Different from the previous identification methods, the main identification challenge resides in two aspects: first, a new objective function is obtained by our improved Stein approximation method in the convex optimization problem, so as to capture more information of particle approximation and convergence; second, another objective function is developed with L1-regularization, which is sparse method based on recursive least squares estimation. Compared with the previous study, the new objective function contains more information and can easily mine more important information from the raw data. Three simulation examples are given to demonstrate the proposed algorithm’s effectiveness. Furthermore, the performances of these approaches are analyzed, including parameter estimation of root mean squared error (RMSE), parameter sparsity and prediction of state and output result.

The temperature of industrial gas containing harmful H2S can reach hundreds of degrees. However, few processes can be used directly for H2S removal from industrial high-temperature gas. In this work, three polyoxometalates with different central atoms ((n-Bu4N)3VMo12O40, (n-Bu4N)3PMo12O40, and (n-Bu4N)4[α-SiMo12O40]) were synthesized and dissolved in four ionic liquids (Bmim]Cl, [Bmim]HCO3, [Bmim]Mes, or [Bmim]OAc) for H2S removal from high-temperature (90–180 °C) gases. The result showed that (n-Bu4N)3VMo12O40/[Bmim]OAc exhibited the optimal desulfurization performance, maintaining more than 98.6% desulfurization efficiency within 10 h. The reacted desulfurization solution can be regenerated by blowing air. FT-IR and XPS results show that both the central atom V and the coordination atom Mo of the polyoxometalate are involved in the oxidation of H2S; after the regeneration by introducing air, V(+IV) and Mo(+IV) recovered to V(+V) and Mo(+VI), respectively. Our research shows that (n-Bu4N)3VMo12O40/[Bmim]OAc is an efficient, easy-to-regenerate, and suitable high-temperature gas desulfurization solution.

Background: Total aortic arch replacement (TAR) with frozen elephant trunk (FET) surgery provides improved long-term results, but the surgery itself is associated with higher risks compared with isolated proximal reconstructions. We applied an aortic balloon occlusion (ABO) technique to reduce the circulatory arrest (CA) time and improve other clinical outcomes.Methods: All patients who underwent TAR with FET surgery (130 with ABO technique, 230 with the conventional approach) in Fuwai Hospital from August 2017 to February 2019 were reviewed in this retrospective observational cohort study. Intra- and early-postoperative results and clinical characteristics were analyzed.Results: After 1:1 propensity score matching (130 cases in each group), the 30-day mortality of the ABO group and the conventional group were 4.6% and 10.8% (p = 0.063), respectively. Although the reduction in complications was not statistically significant, the complication rate in the ABO group was relatively low, having fewer cases of postoperative renal (23.1 vs. 38.5%, p = 0.007) and hepatic (12.3 vs. 30.0%, p < 0.001) injury, lower postoperative wake-up time (15.2 ± 23.6 h vs. 20.1 ± 26.5 h, respectively, p < 0.001), reduced chest tube output (176.03 ± 143.73 ml vs. 213.29 ± 130.12 ml, respectively, p = 0.003), lower red blood cell transfusion volume (4.98 ± 6.53 u vs. 7.28 ± 10.41 u, respectively, p = 0.008), and no fatal events.Conclusions: The ABO technique is a simple method that can reduce the CA time and improve the recovery stage following TAR with FET surgery. The technique represents a practical strategy to treat patients with high operative risks due to its lower complication rate compared with the conventional approach.

Abstracts High-k metal oxide films are vital for the future development of microelectronics technology. In this work, ZrO2 films were grown on silicon by atomic layer deposition (ALD) using tetrakis(dimethylamido)zirconium and ozone as precursors. The relatively constant deposition rate of 0.125 nm/cycle is obtained within the ALD temperature window of 200–250 °C. The film thickness can be precisely controlled by regulating the number of ALD cycle. The ZrO2 films formed at 200–250 °C have an O/Zr atomic ratio of 1.85–1.9 and a low content of carbon impurity. ZrO2 film begins to crystallize in ALD process above 210 °C, and the crystal structure is changed from cubic and orthorhombic phases to monoclinic and orthorhombic phases with increasing the deposition temperature to 350 °C. Moreover, the effect of annealing temperature on dielectric properties of ZrO2 film was studied utilizing ZrO2-based MIS device. The growth of the interface layer between ZrO2 and Si substrate leads to the decrease in the capacitance and the leakage current of dielectric layer in the MIS device after 1000 °C annealing. ZrO2 film exhibits the relatively high dielectric constant of 32.57 at 100 kHz and the low leakage current density of 3.3 × 10−6 A cm−2 at 1 MV/cm.

Abstract Objective To investigate the short- and long-term efficacy of membrane anatomy-guided laparoscopic spleen-preserving circumferential splenic hilar lymph node dissection for the treatment of advanced proximal gastric cancer. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted in 186 patients with advanced proximal gastric cancer who underwent mesenteric anatomy-guided laparoscopic spleen-preserving splenic hilar lymph node dissection for advanced proximal gastric cancer in our center from March 2013 to March 2018. The patients were divided into two groups: one group was the laparoscopic anterior splenic hilar lymph node dissection group which we named L-ASHD, n = 103), while the other group was the laparoscopic circumferential splenic hilar lymph node dissection group which we named L-CSHD, n = 83). Results There was no significant difference in total operative time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative length of hospital stay, and incidence of postoperative complications, etc. (P > 0.05). The number of harvested splenic hilar lymph nodes and the number of patients with harvested positive splenic hilar lymph nodes were both higher in the L-CSHD than in the L-ASHD (3.90 ± 2.52 vs. 3.02 ± 3.07, P < 0.05; 19 vs. 9 patients, P < 0.05). The positive rate of lymph nodes behind the splenic hilar was 8.4%. Kaplan–Meier survival curves showed that patients in the L-CSHD had similar OS and DFS compared with those of patients in the L-ASHD. Conclusion Membrane anatomy-guided laparoscopic spleen-preserving circumferential splenic hilar lymph node dissection for advanced proximal gastric cancer is safe and feasible and can help avoid the incomplete dissection of positive lymph nodes.

Abstracts Nanolayered Ta2O5-Al2O3 composite films were grown on n-type silicon by atomic layer deposition (ALD) within the overlapped ALD window of 220–270 °C. Moreover, post-annealing treatment was carried out to eliminate defects and improve film quality. Nanolayered Ta2O5-Al2O3 composite films remain amorphous after 700 °C annealing. The effects of composition, interface, and deposition sequence on electrical properties of Ta2O5-Al2O3 composite films were investigated in detail utilizing MIS devices. The results demonstrate that the formation of Ta2O5-Al2O3 composite films by mixing Al2O3 into Ta2O5 can decrease the leakage current effectively, but it leads to the decrease of the dielectric constant and the enhancement of the hysteresis effect. The interfaces in composite films are not conducive to prevent the leakage current. The deposition sequence of Si/(Al2O3/Ta2O5)n, Al2O3 as the first covering layer, reduces the leakage current and the hysteresis effect effectively. Therefore, the electrical properties of Ta2O5-Al2O3 composite films could be regulated by adjusting components and structures via ALD to acquire relatively great dielectric constants and acceptable leakage currents.

For the symmetrical mixture model and mixture test area, the lattice point set is used to partition, and then the corresponding test statistics can be constructed. In this paper, we first propose the partition methods under the lattice point sets and obtain several sub-simplexes without common interior points. Furthermore, we present a method for constructing a uniform design on the simplex using the center points of these sub-simplexes. The designs satisfy the uniformity of maximum distance deviation and provide good results for the mean square error deviation. Finally, the uniformity test on the mixture region is considered and illustrated by examples.

Background: Ischemia-reperfusion injury (I/R) strongly affects the prognosis of children with complicated congenital heart diseases (CHDs) who undergo long-term cardiac surgical processes. Recently, the α2-adrenergic receptor agonist Dexmedetomidine (Dex) has been reported to protect cardiomyocytes (CMs) from I/R in cellular models and adult rodent models. However, whether and how Dex may protect human CMs in young children remains largely unknown.Methods and Results: Human ventricular tissue from tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) patients and CMs derived from human-induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC-CMs) were used to assess whether and how Dex protects human CMs from I/R. The results showed that when pretreated with Dex, the apoptosis marker-TUNEL and cleaved caspase 3 in the ventricular tissue were significantly reduced. In addition, the autophagy marker LC3II was significantly increased compared with that of the control group. When exposed to the hypoxia/reoxygenation process, iPSC-CMs pretreated with Dex also showed reduced TUNEL and cleaved caspase 3 and increased LC3II. When the autophagy inhibitor (3-methyladenine, 3-MA) was applied to the iPSC-CMs, the protective effect of Dex on the CMs was largely blocked. In addition, when the fusion of autophagosomes with lysosomes was blocked by Bafilomycin A1, the degradation of p62 induced by Dex during the autophagy process was suspended. Moreover, when pretreated with Dex, both the human ventricle and the iPSC-CMs expressed more AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and phospho AMPK (pAMPK) during the I/R process. After AMPK knockout or the use of an α2-adrenergic receptor antagonist-yohimbine, the protection of Dex and its enhancement of autophagy were inhibited.Conclusion: Dex protects young human CMs from I/R injury, and α2-adrenergic receptor/AMPK-dependent autophagy plays an important role during this process. Dex may have a therapeutic effect for children with CHD who undergo long-term cardiac surgical processes.

A series of carbon-coated LiMn1−xFexPO4 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) materials are successfully constructed using glucose as carbon sources via sol-gel processes. The morphology of the synthesized material particles are more regular and particle sizes are more homogeneous. The carbon-coated LiMn0.8Fe0.2PO4 material obtains the discharge specific capacity of 152.5 mAh·g−1 at 0.1 C rate and its discharge specific capacity reaches 95.7 mAh·g−1 at 5 C rate. Iron doping offers a viable way to improve the electronic conductivity and lattice defects of materials, as well as improving transmission kinetics, thereby improving the rate performance and cycle performance of materials, which is an effective method to promote the electrical properties.
