Abstract

The relation between Latttice Boltzmann Method, which has recently become popular, and the Kinetic Schemes, which are routinely used in Computational Fluid Dynamics, is explored. A new discrete velocity model for the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible fluid flow is presented by combining both the approaches. The new scheme can be interpreted as a pseudo-compressibility method and, for a particular choice of parameters, this interpretation carries over to the Lattice Boltzmann Method., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures

38. Scale-Induced Closure for Approximations of Kinetic Equations

Abstract

The order-of-magnitude method proposed by Struchtrup (Phys. Fluids 16(11):3921-3934, 2004) is a new closure procedure for the infinite moment hierarchy in kinetic theory of gases, taking into account the scaling of the moments. The scaling parameter is the Knudsen number Kn, which is the mean free path of a particle divided by the system size. In this paper, we generalize the order-of-magnitude method and derive a formal theory of scale-induced closures on the level of the kinetic equation. Generally, different orders of magnitude appear through balancing the stiff production term of order 1/Kn with the advection part of the kinetic equation. A cascade of scales is then induced by different powers ofKn. The new closure produces a moment distribution function that respects the scaling of a Chapman-Enskog expansion. The collision operator induces a decomposition of the non-equilibrium part of the distribution function in terms of the Knudsen number. The first iteration of the new closure can be shown to be of second-order in Kn under moderate conditions on the collision operator, to be L 2-stable and to possess an entropy law. The derivation of higher order approximations is also possible. We illustrate the features of this approach in the framework of a 16 discrete velocities model

We consider a simple lattice Boltzmann algorithm, which is used to develop and to illustrate the ideas simultaneously. Specifically, we address the following questions: How to perform a consistency analysis of numerical schemes by regular expansions? Where are the shortcomings of regular expansions? What are multiscale expansions and how do they come naturally into play, to understand numerical algorithms more accurately?

A consistency analysis using asymptotic methods is given and the algorithms are numerically tested in two space dimensions with respect to accuracy and interaction with the inner flow field.

Abstract

BackgroundCells continuously undergo DNA damage from exogenous agents like irradiation or genotoxic chemicals or from endogenous radicals produced by normal cellular metabolic activities. DNA strand breaks are one of the most common genotoxic lesions and they can also arise as intermediates of DNA repair activity. Unrepaired DNA damage can lead to genomic instability, which can massively compromise the health status of organisms. Therefore it is important to measure and quantify DNA damage and its repair.ResultsWe have previously published an automated method for measuring DNA strand breaks based on fluorimetric detection of alkaline DNA unwinding [1], and here we present a mathematical model of the FADU assay, which enables to an analytic expression for the relation between measured fluorescence and the number of strand breaks.ConclusionsAssessment of the formation and also the repair of DNA strand breaks is a crucial functional parameter to investigate genotoxicity in living cells. A reliable and convenient method to quantify DNA strand breakage is therefore of significant importance for a wide variety of scientific fields, e.g. toxicology, pharmacology, epidemiology and medical sciences.

Abstract

24th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference, 21-25 September 2009, Hamburg, Germany; 2088-2090, A technique for fast quantitative determination of the different terms contributing to series resistance in a solar cell from electroluminescence (EL) is introduced. A two-dimensional model of the solar cell is presented, which is used to fit the measured luminescence intensities and thereby separate the series resistance contributions of fingers and emitter. First quantitative results of this method for an industrial screen printed monocrystalline silicon solar cell are shown and the influence of lateral diffusion of charge carriers on the measurement is discussed.
