Abstract Background For patients with rectal cancer, the utilization of temporary ileostomy (TI) has proven effective in minimizing the occurrence of severe complications post-surgery, such as anastomotic leaks; however, some patients are unable to reverse in time or even develop a permanent stoma (PS). We aimed to determine the preoperative predictors associated with TS failure and develop and validate appropriate predictive models to improve patients’ quality of life. Methods This research included 403 patients with rectal cancer who underwent temporary ileostomies between January 2017 and December 2021. All patients were randomly divided into either the developmental (70%) or validation (30%) group. The independent risk factors for PS were determined using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Subsequently, a nomogram was constructed, and the prediction probability was estimated by calculating the area under the curve (AUC) using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. A calibration plot was used to evaluate the nomogram calibration. Results Of the 403 enrolled patients, 282 were randomized into the developmental group, 121 into the validation group, and 58 (14.39%) had a PS. The development group consisted of 282 patients, of whom 39 (13.81%) had a PS. The validation group consisted of 121 patients, of whom, 19 (15.70%) had a PS; 37 related factors were analyzed in the study. Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated significant associations between the occurrence of PS and various factors in this patient cohort, including tumor location (OR = 6.631, P = 0.005), tumor markers (OR = 2.309, P = 0.035), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score (OR = 4.784, P = 0.004), T4 stage (OR = 2.880, P = 0.036), lymph node metastasis (OR = 4.566, P = 0.001), and distant metastasis (OR = 4.478, P = 0.036). Furthermore, a preoperative nomogram was constructed based on these data and subsequently validated in an independent validation group. Conclusion We identified six independent preoperative risk factors associated with PS following rectal cancer resection and developed a validated nomogram with an area under the ROC curve of 0.7758, which can assist surgeons in formulating better surgical options, such as colostomy, for patients at high risk of PS.

Abstract In order to establish a connection between the ballistic performance and mechanical properties of armor steel, a ballistic simulation model was developed and subsequently validated for accuracy and reliability. The mechanical properties of the target plate were described using the Johnson–Cook constitutive relation. An analysis was conducted to investigate the impact of the J–C parameters of the target plate on its ballistic performance, revealing a strong linear relationship between them. Subsequently, a mathematical model represented as H = 14.82 − 0.0048A − 0.0023B + 5.95n − 81.3C was derived, and its accuracy was demonstrated to exceed 90%. This mathematical model can effectively predict the ballistic performance of the armor steel, even when its mechanical properties undergo variations during the production process. This prediction capability significantly contributes to reducing research costs and time.

Results A total of 1610 studies were retrieved, and 13 studies were included for meta-analysis, comprising 3026 patients. BackgroundTo improve perioperative frailty status in patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery (LCCS), we explored a new intensive prehabilitation program that combines prehabilitation exercises with standard enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) and explored its impact.MethodsWe conducted a prospective randomized controlled trial. Between April 2021 to August 2021, patients undergoing elective LCCS were randomized into the standardized ERAS (S-ERAS) group or ERAS based on prehabilitation (group PR-ERAS). Patients in the PR-ERAS group undergoing prehabilitation exercises in the perioperative period in addition to standard enhanced recovery after surgery. We explored the effects of this prehabilitation protocol on frailty, short-term quality of recovery (QoR), psychological status, postoperative functional capacity, postoperative outcomes, and pain.ResultsIn total, 125 patients were evaluated, and 95 eligible patients were enrolled and randomly allocated to the S-ERAS (n = 45) and PR-ERAS (n = 50) groups. The Fried score was higher in the PR-ERAS group on postoperative day (7 (2(2,3) vs. 3(2,4), P = 0.012). The QoR-9 was higher in the PR-ERAS group than in the S-ERAS group on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 7th postoperative days. The PR-ERAS group had an earlier time to first ambulation (P < 0.050) and time to first flatus (P < 0.050).ConclusionPrehabilitation exercises can improve postoperative frailty and accelerate recovery in patients undergoing LCCS but may not improve surgical safety. Introduction Patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remain a poor prognosis despite the development of chemotherapy. Although programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) blockade has shown great efficacy in various solid tumours, its application in treating PDAC is limited. Recent studies have indicated that chemotherapy or stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) may improve the antitumour effect of PD-1 blockade in patients with PDAC. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of combined therapy comprising PD-1 blockade, gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel chemotherapy and SBRT for patients with metastatic PDAC.Methods and analysis This is a multicentre, single-arm, prospective phase II clinical trial. Forty-three patients diagnosed with metastatic PDAC will be enrolled. The eligible patients will be intravenously administered 1000 mg/m2 gemcitabine and 125 mg/m2 nab-paclitaxel on days 1 and 8 of the 21-day cycle. Serplulimab (200 mg) will be administered intravenously on day 1 of the 21-day cycle. Furthermore, during the second cycle, the patients will undergo SBRT with doses of 33 Gy in five fractions for primary lesions or doses of 24 Gy in three fractions for metastases. The primary endpoint is the 6-month progression-free survival (PFS) rate. The secondary endpoints overall survival, PFS, overall response rate, disease control rate, time to progression, duration of response, duration of disease control and safety. Moreover, this trial seeks to investigate biomarkers such as circulating tumour DNA and circulating hybrid cells in patients diagnosed with metastatic PDAC.Ethics and dissemination The study was approved by the Ethics Committee on Biomedical Research, West China Hospital of Sichuan University. In order to solve the problems such as small influence range, fast decay rate, difficulty in gas disaster control and long treatment period of gas extraction drilling in Hebi Mining Area, a technological process of coordinated stamping operation was put forward, and the technical mode of drilling and stamping coordinated operation with automatic drilling rig group drilling - temporary sealing hole pre-pumping - stamping joint operation after pre-pumping is formed, and industrial test is carried out in Hebi No.6 Coal Mine for industrial trials, the field application results show that: the technology mode gives full play to the advantages of automatic drilling rig continuous drilling, fast operation, reducing staff and improving efficiency, realizes the specialization, continuity and scale of gas extraction drilling construction operation and hydraulic stamping coordinated penetration operation, and makes the construction work efficiency of construction of penetration drilling in the bottom rock tunnel for gas treatment increase by 48% under the same geological conditions; meanwhile, the at the same time, after the construction of extraction holes by automatic drilling rig is completed, the temporary sealing of the extraction holes is carried out, so that the free gas in the holes is greatly reduced after extraction, which greatly reduces the frequency of gas overrunning accidents in the roadway during the construction of hydraulic measures and effectively guarantees the safety of construction; the average gas extraction concentration of the test borehole is 1.31 times of that of the conventional hydraulic ramming measure, and the average daily pure extraction volume of the test unit borehole is 1.79 times of that of the conventional hydraulic ramming measure.

We studied the characteristics of coupled-core four-core fibers (CC-4CFs) with different core pitches both theoretically and experimentally. The spatial mode dispersions of different fibers were analyzed, and the result agrees well with theoretical ones. In the experiment, we achieved a spatial mode dispersion as low as 3.72 ps/km1/2 for a 4 km-long CC-4CF with core pitch of 19 μm at a bending radius of 8 cm. The impulse response matrices of four core fibers with different core pitches was investigated using swept-wavelength interferometry over 100 nm bandwidth. The impulse responses were Gaussian-shaped and consistent between different inputs and outputs for CC-4CFs. Our results show that the CC-4CFs with core pitches of 17 and 19 μm exhibit narrower pulse broadening. In addition, the mode-dependent losses of different fibers were analyzed. For the fibers with core pitch of 19 μm, the estimated mode-dependent loss was lower than 3 dB for the entire 100 nm bandwidth. Our results are especially helpful for developing coupled-core multicore fibers for long-haul transmission applications.

To solve the problem of safe and stable grid operation caused by the uncontrollability of renewable energy power generation with a high proportion, this paper focuses on the method of energy storage participation in grid supply and demand balance regulation based on differentiated electricity prices. From the perspective of demand-side and regulable resources, the paper investigates the method of using differentiated electricity prices to improve demand-side responsiveness and expand energy storage operation revenue, so as to explore and activate the potential of regulable resources in the grid. Firstly, the necessity and feasibility of considering differentiated electricity prices are analyzed. Secondly, a demand-side response and energy storage regulation model based on differentiated electricity prices is established, and the supply–demand balance regulation method considering differentiated electricity prices is proposed. Then, the supply–demand balance regulation process under two conditions before and after the implementation of differentiated electricity prices is compared and analyzed through case simulation. Finally, via the practical example, the effectiveness of the method is verified, and the proposed method is able to reduce the demand for energy storage by half in rated power and reduce the rated capacity of the energy storage to 8.66%.

With the development of technology, people’s demand for pressure sensors with high sensitivity and a wide working range is increasing. An effective way to achieve this goal is simulating human skin. Herein, we propose a facile, low-cost, and reproducible method for preparing a skin-like multi-layer flexible pressure sensor (MFPS) device with high sensitivity (5.51 kPa−1 from 0 to 30 kPa) and wide working pressure range (0–200 kPa) by assembling carbonized fabrics and micro-wrinkle-structured Ag@rGO electrodes layer by layer. In addition, the highly imitated skin structure also provides the device with an extremely short response time (60/90 ms) and stable durability (over 3000 cycles). Importantly, we integrated multiple sensor devices into gloves to monitor finger movements and behaviors. In summary, the skin-like MFPS device has significant potential for real-time monitoring of human activities in the field of flexible wearable electronics and human–machine interaction.

Background. Protective ileostomy can effectively prevent severe anastomotic leakage after rectal cancer surgery; however, the optimal timing for ileostomy closure during adjuvant chemotherapy remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the safety and long-term outcomes of early ileostomy closure during adjuvant chemotherapy. Method. Patients who underwent laparoscopic rectal cancer surgery combined with protective ileostomy and adjuvant chemotherapy between April 2017 and April 2021 were retrospectively evaluated. Patients were divided into an early closure group during chemotherapy (group A) and a late closure group after chemotherapy (group B). Results. BackgroundLaparoscopic right hemicolectomy is a standard treatment modality for right colon cancer. However, performing intracorporeal anastomosis (IA) for totally laparoscopic right hemicolectomy (TLRH) remains a challenge for some surgeons. To simplify IA in TLRH we used self-pulling and latter transection (SPLT) reconstruction in TLRH, and compared this procedure with overlap IA and laparoscopy-assisted right hemicolectomy (LARH) in order to evaluate its safety and effectiveness.MethodsPatients with right colon cancer who underwent SPLT-TLRH, TLRH with overlap IA or LARH between July 2019 and June 2023 were evaluated retrospectively. With the rapid maintenance cost increase of wind turbine blades, aerodynamic repairing principle can be a supplement to the structural repairing principle, which not only protects the blades from structural damage, but also meets the requirement of power generation efficiency. In this paper, the two-dimensional multi-scale flow field analysis method was employed to investigate the aerodynamic performance of the wind turbine blades damage and its corresponding repair techniques. Repairing principle for airfoil defects on the outer surface of the blade are given according to the blade’s extended position. Firstly, the aerodynamic profile maintenance theory of wind turbine blades is introduced. Then, numerical simulation is performed for the pressure surface and suction surface of 45.3 shape blade damage. Corresponding repair principles are presented. Further, the generality of aerodynamic repairing principle is verified by the numerical simulation on 56.5 shape blade. Finally, the relevant case of Haiyuan Wind Power Station in Ningxia shows that the proposed aerodynamic repairing principle can effectively improve the power generation efficiency in practice.

This study investigates the impact of varying extrusion ratios on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AlSiCuFeMnYb alloy. Following hot extrusion, significant enhancements are observed in the microstructure of the cast rare earth aluminium alloy. Within the cross-sectional microstructure, the α-Al phase is reduced in size, and its dendritic morphology is eliminated. The morphology of the eutectic Si phase transitions from long strips to short rods, fine fibres, or granular forms. Similarly, the Fe-rich phase changes from a coarse skeletal and flat noodle shape to small strips and short skeletal forms resembling Chinese characters. The CuAl2 phase evolves from large blocks to smaller blocks and granular forms, while the Yb (Ytterbium)-rich rare earth phase shifts from large blocks to smaller, more uniformly distributed blocks. In the longitudinal section, the structure aligns into strips along the extrusion direction, with the spacing between these strips decreasing as the extrusion ratio increases. At an extrusion ratio of 22.56, the alloy demonstrates superior mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 325.50 MPa, a yield strength of 254.44 MPa, a hardness of 143.90 HV, and an elongation of 15.47%. These represent improvements of 27.8%, 36.5%, 38.9%, and 236.4%, respectively, compared with the as-cast rare earth alloy. In addition, the fracture surface of the extruded rare earth alloy exhibits obvious ductile fracture characteristics. Additionally, the alloy undergoes dynamic recrystallisation and dislocation entanglement during hot extrusion. The emergence of a twinned Si phase and a dynamically precipitated nanoscale CuAl2 phase are critical for enhancing deformation strengthening, modification strengthening, and dynamic precipitation strengthening of the extruded alloys.

In order to study the adsorption process and adsorption characteristics of shale oil at the macro scale, the isothermal adsorption experiments of illite and kerogen on a heptadecane (oil phase) solution were carried out by infrared spectrophotometry and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Based on the adsorption isotherm model and adsorption thermodynamic model, the characteristics of heptadecane adsorbed by illite and kerogen at different temperatures and oily solution concentrations were studied. The experimental results show that the concentration and temperature of the alkane solution help to enhance the adsorption and increase the saturated adsorption capacity. The difference is that the concentration will have a certain effect on the adsorption rate, while the temperature will not. Based on the three adsorption isotherm models, it was found that Langmuir and Freundlich were more suitable for describing the adsorption process of the heptadecane solution by illite and kerogen, and the adsorption characteristics of heptadecane molecules at different temperatures and adsorbents were evaluated. Heating leads to an increase in the collision efficiency between adsorbate molecules and adsorbents, thereby accelerating the migration rate of alkanes. Therefore, increasing temperature helps to enhance the adsorption capacity of rocks and increase the saturated adsorption capacity of minerals. The research results clarify the adsorption characteristics of shale oil heavy components from the macro level and fill the research gap in the application of solid–liquid isothermal adsorption physical experiments on the adsorption and occurrence of shale oil.

Low-temperature preservation is an important storage method for grass carp. Although low temperature can not completely inhibit the activity of enzymes in fish, it can significantly decrease the activity of enzymes and inhibit the growth and reproduction of microorganisms in fish, thereby prolonging the shelf life of fish. When the storage temperature is relatively low, the quality and taste of grass carp are not easily lost, thereby delaying its spoilage. In response to the national development plan of the cold chain circulation in the "14th Five-Year Plan", it is necessary to delay the shelf life of grass carp and reduce the quality change of grass carp through effective preservation technology. This paper summarizes the effects of low-temperature preservation of grass carp on microbial and enzyme activities and reviews the principles and methods of several common low-temperature preservation methods of grass carp (cooling preservation, ice temperature preservation, micro-freezing preservation, frozen preservation, modified low-temperature preservation, compound preservation and new preservation technology), and their application in grass carp preservation, preservation effect. This study aims to provide a reference for low-temperature grass carp preservation and find a more practical and economical way of grass carp preservation.

For multiple distributed generation units (DG unit) parallel system, excessive fault current has adverse effects on the safe and stable operation of the utility grid. As a result, a fault current limitation control of multiple DG units is developed in this paper to limit the fault current of related fault branch and ride through the associated fault conditions. The injection fault current amplitude and phase angle of each DG unit for grid-side converter are controlled through the point of common coupling (PCC) voltage support and fault current limitation to limit the total current amplitude at the corresponding fault location. The validity of the proposed control strategy has been verified by simulation and hardware-in-loop (HIL) experiment results.

The short-term forecasting of photovoltaic (PV) power generation ensures the scheduling and dispatching of electrical power, helps design a PV-integrated energy management system, and enhances the security of grid operation. However, due to the randomness of solar energy, the output of the PV system will fluctuate, which will affect the safe operation of the grid. To solve this problem, a high-precision hybrid prediction model based on variational quantum circuit (VQC) and long short-term memory (LSTM) network is developed to predict solar irradiance 1 hour in advance. VQC is embedded in LSTM to iteratively optimize the weight parameters of four gates (forgetting gate, input gate, cell state, and output gate) to improve prediction accuracy. To evaluate the prediction performance of this model, five solar radiation observatories located in China are selected, together with widely used models including seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average, convolution neural network, recurrent neural network (RNN), gate recurrent unit, (GRU), and LSTM; comparisons are made under different seasons and months. The experimental results show that the annual average root mean square error of the quantum long short-term memory model is 61.756 $\text{W/m}^{2}$, which is reduced by 10.7%, 13.9%, 8.1%, 3.8%, and 3.4%, respectively, compared with other models; the annual average mean absolute error is 24.257 $\text{W/m}^{2}$, which is reduced by 28.1%, 28.9%, 24.1%, 12.2%, and 12.8%, respectively, compared with other models; the annual average R-Square ($R^{2}$) is 0.946, which is improved by 1.5%, 1.9%, 1.2%, 0.4%, and 0.4%, respectively, compared with other models.

In this paper, we report our recent progress related to advanced digital signal processing (DSP) technologies to address the strong inter-core crosstalk (IC-XT) during multicore fiber (MCF) optical transmissions. MCF transmission technology has significant potential to break through the capacity crunch of single-mode fiber (SMF) transmissions. However, strong coupling among cores, namely, inter-core crosstalk (IC-XT), is unavoidable for high-density space-division multiplexing (SDM) transmissions using MCFs with the standard cladding size. To deal with this issue, we propose some novel DSP structures to eliminate IC-XT with considerable simplicity, based on the neural network equalizer (NNE)-based multiple-input and multiple-output digital signal processing (MIMO-DSP). The traditional NNE-based MIMO-DSP method has the ability to process the coupled SDM tributaries transmitted over MCFs; however, it exhibits complexity limitations for practical implementations. The implementation complexity of the NNE-based method is mainly attributed to the time-consumption of the training process and the large weight (neurons) numbers of the equalizers. Thus, we propose two main approaches to simplify NNE-based MIMO-DSP for the practical implementation of MCF transmissions: (1) To reduce the time-consumption of the training process in NNE-based MIMO-DSP, the idea of transfer learning (TL) is employed for initializing the weights, resulting in the faster convergence of the equalizers. (2) IC-XT cancellation is performed along with MIMO-DSP; thus, the dimensionality of MIMO-DSP could be reduced. To validate the performance improvement of the proposed machine learning DSP methods, both simulations and experiments related to transmissions and reception over MCFs were conducted. The results indicate that the proposed novel DSP structures possess the advantages of reduced complexity and improved robustness to IC-XT, which is beneficial for the next-generation high-density SDM transmissions.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the mental and emotional well-being of patients, family members, and health care workers. Patients in the isolation ward may have psychological problems due to long-term hospitalization, the development of the epidemic, and the inability to see their families. A medical assistive robot (MAR), acting as an intermediary of communication, can be deployed to address these mental pressures. ObjectiveCareDo, a MAR with telepresence and teleoperation functions, was developed in this work for remote health care. The aim of this study was to investigate its practical performance in the isolation ward during the pandemic. MethodsTwo systems were integrated into the CareDo robot. For the telepresence system, a web real-time communications solution is used for the multiuser chat system and a convolutional neural network is used for expression recognition. For the teleoperation system, an incremental motion mapping method is used for operating the robot remotely. A clinical trial of this system was conducted at First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University. ResultsDuring the clinical trials, tasks such as video chatting, emotion detection, and medical supplies delivery were performed via the CareDo robot. Seven voice commands were set for performing system wakeup, video chatting, and system exiting. Durations from 1 to 3 seconds of common commands were set to improve voice command detection. The facial expression was recorded 152 times for a patient in 1 day for the psychological intervention. The recognition accuracy reached 95% and 92.8% for happy and neutral expressions, respectively. ConclusionsPatients and health care workers can use this MAR in the isolation ward for telehealth care during the COVID-19 pandemic. This can be a useful approach to break the chains of virus transmission and can also be an effective way to conduct remote psychological intervention.

We designed and fabricated all-fiber fan-in/fan-out (FI/FO) devices using a fused taper technique for square lattice structure coupled-core multicore fiber (CC-MCF). A vanishing core bridge fiber with a diameter of 80 μm was tailor-designed to minimize both the mode field mismatch and the required tapering ratio at the same time. In experiment, we succeeded in fabricating FI/FO devices with a core pitch as small as 17 μm and achieving practically low insertion losses of 1.43 dB and 2.28 dB for fan-in and fan-out devices, respectively. The fabricated FI/FO devices can well multiplex and demultiplex 1550 nm light into and out from the CC-MCF without obvious total power fluctuation even when an external perturbation is intentionally imposed on the CC-MCF. The proposed FI/FO device is very useful for both the study and application of CC-MCFs which usually have ultra-small core pitches.

Driven by the rural revitalization strategy and the carbon neutrality goals, the grid-connected photovoltaic/biogas/energy-storage (PV/biogas/ES) system is increasingly widely used in rural China. In this paper, a coordinated operation and control strategy of grid-connected PV/biogas/ES system for rural ecological breeding is proposed. Biogas, ES, and controllable load can adjust their operation state based on meeting constraint conditions to prevent overload from affecting the distribution transformer service life. The line voltage and load can adjust the ES control strategy. The peak shaving and valley filling can be realized through orderly charge/discharge control, in normal operation. Based on virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control, the ES has a certain frequency modulation ability. Meanwhile, overcharge, and over discharge can be avoided by detecting the state of charge (SOC) and adjusting the output power. When the line voltage drops suddenly, VSG can be switched to reactive power compensation mode. The battery energy storage system (BESS) and grid-connected inverter constitute a STATCOM/BESS, which can provide continuous reactive current to the grid to raise the line voltage and improve the system reliability. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified by MATLAB/Simulink simulation.

Stimuli-responsive nanotherapeutics hold great promise in precision oncology. In this study, a facile strategy was used to develop a new class of pH-responsive micelles, which contain methoxy polyethylene glycol (mPEG) and poly(carbobenzoxy-l-glutamic acid, BLG) as amphiphilic copolymer, and β-thiopropionate as acid-labile linkage. The mPEG-S-PBLG copolymer was synthesized through one-step ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and thiol-ene click reaction, and was able to efficiently encapsulate doxorubicin (DOX) to form micelles. The physicochemical characteristics, cellular uptake, tumor targeting, and anti-tumor efficacy of DOX-loaded micelles were investigated. DOX-loaded micelles were stable under physiological conditions and disintegrated under acidic conditions. DOX-loaded micelles can be internalized into cancer cells and release drugs in response to low pH in endosomes/lysosomes, resulting in cell death. Furthermore, the micellar formulation significantly prolonged the blood circulation, reduced the cardiac distribution, and selectively delivered more drugs to tumor tissue. Finally, compared with free DOX, DOX-loaded micelles significantly improved the anti-tumor efficacy and reduced systemic and cardiac toxicity in two different tumor xenograft models. These results suggest that mPEG-S-PBLG micelles have translational potential in the precise delivery of anti-cancer drugs.

The no-touch isolation technique has been widely used in cancer surgery as a strategy to prevent cancer cells from spreading; however, it is difficult to apply in laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD). Here, we describe an orthotopic resection surgical technique that applies a no-touch principle for LPD and can help with the in situ resection of tumors. In implementing this surgical strategy, Kocher’s maneuver was not performed first. Instead, after the exploration of the abdominal cavity, the distal stomach and the pancreatic neck were transected. Then, the dissection of the uncinate process of the pancreas, the duodenum, and the superior mesenteric vein and artery is carried out via an inferior infracolic approach. Finally, the pancreatic head and duodenum were removed in situ. Among the 41 patients who underwent this technique, two (4.9%) required conversion to open surgery due to uncontrolled bleeding. The average operative time was 335 min (248–1055 min). The mean estimated blood loss was 300 mL (50–1250 mL). Two patients (4.9%) underwent combined PV resection and reconstruction; six patients (14.6%) required a blood transfusion; two patients (4.9%) suffered from postoperative bleeding; two patients (4.9%) suffered from Grade B pancreatic fistulas; one patient (2.4%) suffered from bile leakage; and three patients (7.3%) suffered from abdominal fluid collection. No patients died during the perioperative period. Therefore, orthotopic LPD using an inferior infracolic approach is safe and feasible for patients with malignant pancreatic head and periampullary tumors. However, further investigations are required to elucidate its oncological benefits.

Abstract Background Soil salinization and alkalization are among the major agricultural threats that affect crop productivity worldwide, which are increasing day by day with an alarming rate. In recent years, several halophytes have been investigated for their utilization in soil remediation and to decipher the mechanism of salt-tolerance in these high salt tolerant genetic repositories. Suaeda salsa is an annual halophytic herb in the family Amaranthaceae, displaying high salt and alkali-resistance and having nutritive value. However, the fundamental biological characteristics of this valuable plant remain to be elucidated until today. Results In this study, we observed the morphology and development of Suaeda salsa, including seed morphology, seed germination, plant morphology, and flower development. Using microscopy, we observed the male and female gametophyte developments of Suaeda salsa. Also, chromosome behaviour during the meiosis of male gametophyte was studied. Eventually, the genome size of Suaeda salsa was estimated through flow cytometry using Arabidopsis as reference. Conclusions Our findings suggest that the male and female gametophyte developments of Suaeda salsa are similar to those of the model plant Arabidopsis, and the diploid Suaeda salsa contains nine pairs of chromosomes. The findings also indicate that the haploid genome of Suaeda salsa is approximately 437.5 MB. The observations and results discussed in this study will provide an insight into future research on Suaeda salsa.

Abstract Background An efficient transformation protocol is a primary requisite to study and utilize the genetic potential of any plant species. A quick transformation system is also crucial for the functional analysis of genes along with the study of proteins and their interactions in vivo. Presently, however, quick and effective transformation systems are still lacking for many plant species including pineapple. This has limited the full exploration of the genetic repository of pineapple as well as the study of its genes, protein localization and protein interactions. Results To address the above limitations, we have developed an efficient system for protoplast isolation and subcellular localization of desired proteins using pineapple plants derived from tissue culture. A cocktail of 1.5% (W/V) Cellulase R-10 and 0.5% (W/V) Macerozyme R-10 resulted in 51% viable protoplasts with 3 h digestion. Compared to previously reported protocols, our protoplast isolation method is markedly faster (saving 4.5 h), requires only a small quantity of tissue sample (1 g of leaves) and has high yield (6.5 × 105). The quality of the isolated protoplasts was verified using organelle localization in protoplasts with different organelle markers. Additionally, colocalization analysis of two pineapple Mg2+ transporter genes in pineapple protoplasts was consistent with the results in a tobacco transient expression system, confirming that the protoplast isolation method can be used to study subcellular localization. Further findings showed that the system is also suitable for protein–protein interaction studies. Conclusion Based on our findings, the presently described method is an efficient and effective strategy for pineapple protoplast isolation and transformation; it is convenient and time saving and provides a greater platform for transformation studies.

Quite a few studies have been conducted to improve the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of pineapple, which is the second most important commercial tropical fruit crop worldwide. However, pineapple transformation remains challenging, due to technical difficulties, the lengthy regeneration process, and a high labor requirement. There have not been any studies specifically addressing the introduction of GFP-tagged genes into pineapples through Agrobacterium-mediated transformation, which would enable easy, non-destructive expression detection. It would also allow expression localization at the organelle level, which is not possible with GUS a reporter gene that encodes β-glucuronidase or a herbicide resistance reporter gene. Here, we report a method for the introduction of GFP-tagged genes into pineapples through Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. We used embryonic calli for transformation, and plants were regenerated through somatic embryogenesis. In this study, we optimized the incubation time for Agrobacterium infection, the co-cultivation time, the hygromycin concentration for selection, and the callus growth conditions after selection. Our strategy reduced the time required to obtain transgenic plants from 7.6 months to 6.1 months. The expression of GFP-tagged AcWRKY28 was observed in the nuclei of transgenic pineapple root cells. This method allows easy, non-destructive expression detection of transgenic constructs at the organelle level. These findings on pineapple transformation will help accelerate pineapple molecular breeding efforts to introduce new desirable traits.

Gene expression is regulated by transcription factors, which play many significant developmental processes. SQUAMOSA promoter-binding proteins (SBP) perform a variety of regulatory functions in leaf, flower, and fruit development, plant architecture, and sporogenesis. 16 SBP genes were identified in pineapple and were divided into four groups on basis of phylogenetic analysis. Five paralogs in pineapple for SBP genes were identified with Ka/Ks ratio varied from 0.20 for AcSBP14 and AcSBP15 to 0.36 for AcSBP6 and AcSBP16, respectively. 16 SBP genes were located on 12 chromosomes out of 25 pineapple chromosomes with highly conserved protein sequence structures. The isoionic points of SBP ranged from 6.05 to 9.57, while molecular weight varied from 22.7 to 121.9 kD. Expression profiles of SBP genes revealed that AcSBP7 and AcSBP15 (leaf), AcSBP13, AcSBP12, AcSBP8, AcSBP16, AcSBP9, and AcSBP11 (sepal), AcSBP6, AcSBP4, and AcSBP10 (stamen), AcSBP14, AcSBP1, and AcSBP5 (fruit) while the rest of genes showed low expression in studied tissues. Four genes, that is, AcSBP11, AcSBP6, AcSBP4, and AcSBP12, were highly expressed at 4°C, while AcSBP16 were upregulated at 45°C. RNA-Seq was validated through qRT-PCR for some genes. Salt stress-induced expression of two genes, that is, AcSBP7 and AcSBP14, while in drought stress, AcSBP12 and AcSBP15 were highly expressed. Our study lays a foundation for further gene function and expression studies of SBP genes in pineapple.

The effects of addition of different amounts of rare earth ytterbium (Yb) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the casting ADC12 alloy were investigated by mechanical properties testing and microstructure observation. The results indicate that Yb modification had a big influence on the microstructure and properties of the as-cast alloy. The optimum level of Yb content was 0.8 wt %. The coarse dendritic primary α-Al phases were fully refined, leading to the decreasing of the secondary dendrite arm spacing. The morphology of eutectic silicon phases changed from acicular into short rod-like and even granular. There was a structural transformation of β-Fe phases from massive to small rod-shaped morphology. Additionally, the tensile strength, elongation, and microhardness were 267.9 MPa, 4.2%, and 107.3 HV, respectively, increases of 55.4, 121.1, and 41.4%, respectively, compared with the matrix alloy. Fractographic examinations reveal that mainly ductile fracture for Yb addition of 0.8 wt %. The fracture appearances matched the tendency of the tensile properties. Furthermore, the addition of Yb can generate a rare earth phase consisting of the three elements of Al, Si, Yb, with some small iron-rich phases attached around the rare earth phase.

Underwater acoustic sensor networks (UWASNs) are playing a key role in ocean applications. Unfortunately, the efficiency of UWASNs is inferior to that of the terrestrial sensor networks (TWSNs). The main reasons are as follows: (1) UWASNs suffer long propagation delay; (2) UWASNs are limited by the narrow bandwidth. Many MAC protocols are proposed to improve the efficiency of UWASNs. However, their improvement is not enough. Moreover, few of them consider the reliability of UWASNs even though the packet loss can fail the applications. Actually, a few of the protocols employ the traditional acknowledgment (ACK) mechanism, but they suffer the throughput degradation a lot. In this paper, first, we propose a protocol called RAS, a priority scheduling approach for multihop topologies. RAS is more efficient in throughput and delay performance. Then, we propose a reliable RAS called RRAS that obtains a tradeoff between the reliability and the efficiency. RRAS designs an ACK and retransmission mechanism, that is, different from the traditional one so that it can maintain a comparable throughput when improving the reliability. Extensive evaluations are conducted to verify that RAS is efficient and RRAS is a tradeoff on reliability and efficiency.
