Background In recent years, measurement of cerebral regional oxygen saturation (rSO2) has attracted attention during resuscitation. However, serial changes of cerebral rSO2 in pre-hospital settings are unclear. The objective of this study was to clarify serial changes in cerebral rSO2 of patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in the pre-hospital setting. Methods We recently developed a portable rSO2 monitor that is small (170 × 100 × 50 mm in size and 600 g in weight) enough to carry in pre-hospital settings. The sensor is attached to the patient’s forehead by the ELT (Emergency Life-saving Technician), and it monitors rSO2 continuously. Results From June 2013 through August 2014, serial changes in cerebral rSO2 in seven patients were evaluated. According to the results of the serial changes in rSO2, four patterns of rSO2 change were found, as follows. Type 1: High rSO2 (around about 60 %) type (n = 1). Initial electrocardiogram was ventricular fibrillation and ROSC (return of spontaneous circulation) could be diagnosed in pre-hospital setting. Her outcome at discharge was Good Recovery (GR). Type 2: Low rSO2 (around about 45–50 %) type (n = 3). They did not get ROSC even once. Type 3: Gradually decreasing rSO2 type (n = 2): ROSC could be diagnosed in hospital, but not in pre-hospital setting. Their outcomes at discharge were not GR. Type 4: other type (n = 1). In this patient with ROSC when ELT started cerebral rSO2 measurement, cerebral rSO2 was 67.3 % at measurement start, it dropped gradually to 54.5 %, and then rose to 74.3 %. The cerebral oxygenation was impaired due to possible cardiac arrest again, and after that, ROSC led to the recovery of cerebral blood flow. Conclusion We could measure serial changes in cerebral rSO2 in seven patients with OHCA in the pre-hospital setting. Our data suggest that pre-hospital monitoring of cerebral rSO2 might lead to a new resuscitation strategy. Virtual reality (VR) is well-known and is currently being investigated for practical use in various industrial fields. Using three-dimensional computer graphics, interactive devices, and a high-resolution display, a virtual world can be realized in which imaginary objects can be picked up as if they were in the physical world. Using VR technology, Matsushita Electric Works, Ltd. has been developing application systems for industrial use since 1990. This paper details four VR application systems: a relax/refresh system employing VR a horseback riding therapy simulator with VR technology, a VR-supported kitchen layout design system, as well as an urban planning VR system.

Sustainable Smart Town (SST) scheme which utilizes networking of energy and information is receiving much attention as a way of stable energy supply and efficient operation in each region and country. SST consists of Smart Grid to supply energy efficiently and energy efficient buildings such as smart homes, condominiums, stores and factories. In addition, new service such as Demand Response Service which takes advantage of networking is beginning to appear in the market. This paper introduces outline of several SST pilot projects, energy consumption reduction in office building, demand response in existing residential house and information security system for facilities. It also mentions the role and future prospect of International Standardization to realize the safe, secure, comfortable and convenient SST.

A mobile telepresence robot is currently being developed for use in surveillance and fire-detection applications. The system permits precision observation and pinpoint data collection without subjecting the user to a possibly hazardous remote environment. Since control of such a robot is a complicated task, a telepresence operator-machine interface is designed to allow users to feel the robot as an extension of themselves. In this paper, the overview of the current system is shown, where the manual control system by the user using the joystick is explained. The control system, however, forces the user to control the robot all the time. In order to decrease the workload of the user, an autonomous movement of the robot based on fuzzy control will be integrated with the current system.

A recent manifestation of the new paradigm regarding the relationship between humans and computers is called artificial reality, virtual reality or cyberspace. Using 3D computer graphics, multisensory interactive interface devices and high resolution displays, a virtual world can be realized in which one can pick up imaginary objects as if they are real. Using this technology, the virtual space decision support system (VSDSS) lets users design virtual products and experience them while in virtual space. The VSDSS and its application to the unified sales/production system (US/PS) are described in this paper. At present, most computer-aided manufacturing systems are geared towards production in small lots and are unable to handle custom-designed products. Using the VSDSS, individuals will be able to design their own products. The VSDSS system should be designed so that the dreams of the individuals can be realized.

Using this technology and Kansei Engineering, Virtual Space Decision Support System has been developing in Matsushita Electric Works. Kansei Engineering is defined as a “translation system of a customer’s favorite or image into real design components” (Nagamachi, 1986) can be used for the customers to design furniture which just they image and experience them in virtual space. And in future, it will be able to deal with whole of house, then customers can design their house and check the housing performances such a light, sound, vibration, temperature, air and living-space amenity. This paper details Kansei Engineering and Virtual Space Decision Support System.

This report is a description of our Virtual Reality (VR) technology application, a VR-supported kitchen layout design system. This VR system was developed on personal computers and has made it possible to achieve hardware cost reduction and a user-friendly interface. With the VR system, customers can have a pseudo-experience of their “virtual kitchen” and modify the design of the kitchen. This system helps our customers to make decisions when designing the layout of their new kitchen by giving them a good idea of their potential purchase. The VR system has been in practical use in Matsushita’s showrooms since 1994. In the future, we plan to put the VR system on the Internet. The VR system will also play an important role in user interface in the House Design Advisory System. This system, which we are currently developing, will give advice on house design, as well as on kitchen layout design, according to the customers’ diversified lifestyles.

This report is a description of a software application to construct a whole house or living space in a virtual world and to experience it through the application of virtual reality technology. In the virtual house we can preview the appearance, convenience, safety, comfort level, and other factors such as temperature, air flow, and outside noise by using results from simulations. For developing the virtual housing system, four major goals have been defined. These goals are to keep the graphics drawing speed at better than 10 frames/sec. (which we call real time animation), to use texture-mapping on almost all surfaces in the house where texturing with applicable, to develop a user interface to check the house’s utility, and to use a multi display large screen environment in which more than 30 people can participate at the same time. This virtual housing system is a subsystem of the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) project called “Housing Development Project for the 21st Century”.

VSDSS can be used to build a unified sales/production system (US/PS) which will let users design their own custom products and have them produced by a computer-aided manufacturing system. This paper details the design of the VSDSS and US/PS systems.

ポリスチレンおよびポリ酢酸ビニルラテックスの凍結安定性の研究を行なった結果, 次のことが明らかとなった。(1)安定性は, ラテックス粒子界面における界面活性剤の吸着濃度が不飽和のときには, 飽和吸着に達するまでは, 吸着濃度の増加とともに向上した。(2)ラテックスの粒子径が大きくなるとともに, ポリ酢酸ビニルラテックスの安定性は向上したが,ポリスチレンラテックスのそれはわずかに低下する傾向がみられた。(3)内部および外部可塑化によるTgの低下は安定性の低下をもたらしたが,ポリ酢酸ビニルラテックスのTgに対する安定性の依存性は,ポリスチレンラチックスのそれに比べて著しく高かった。また内部可塑化のほうが外部可塑化よりも安定性の低下が著しかった。(4)乳化重合開始時におけるヒドロキシエチルセルロースおよびポリビニルアルコールの添加は安定性を薯しく向上させたが. 重合後の添加は安定性の向上にほとんど寄与しなかった。(5)安定性はアクリル酸の共重合率の増加とともに急速に向上した。
