In this study, nano-Nb-modified AlSi10Mg composites were fabricated using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The effects of Nb addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the AlSi10Mg alloy were systematically investigated. Compared with the as-built AlSi10Mg alloy, the microstructure along the building direction of the AlSi10Mg–Nb composites changed from coarse columnar grains to ultrafine equiaxed grains. Moreover, the preferential grain growth orientation was significantly weakened. Grain refinement occurs due to the presence of abundant in-situ Al3Nb precipitates dispersed within the grain, serving as heterogeneous nucleation inoculants. Simultaneously, the precipitation of NbSi2 particles along the eutectic network also contributed to refining the structure of the eutectic network. As a result, the LPBF-processed AlSi10Mg–Nb samples demonstrated a very high ultimate tensile strength (∼560 MPa) and good ductility (∼7%), comparable to those of high-strength aluminum alloys. The underlying mechanisms for this strength enhancement are discussed based on the improved mechanical properties. This study provides a novel perspective for the fabrication of high-performance AlSi10Mg alloys using LPBF.

To date, some questions about medium-entropy carbide ceramics and the corresponding multi-phase carbide ceramics with the same cations and proportions remain unclear. Regarding oxidation behavior, do both have synergistic oxidation abilities and what role does entropy stabilization play in medium-entropy carbides? In this work, the oxidation behaviors of HfC–ZrC–TiC multi-phase carbide (HZT-MPC) and (Hf1/3Zr1/3Ti1/3)C medium-entropy carbide (HZT-MEC) powders were investigated. After thermogravimetry (TG) oxidation, the TG curve of HZT-MPC had a bimodal distribution. The “preferential oxidation” of HfC/ZrC occurred within HZT-MPC, followed by the formation of multi-phase oxides (HfO2, ZrO2, and TiO2). The uneven compositional distribution slowed their solid solution reactions to form Ti-doped (Hf,Zr)O2 and (Hf,Zr)TiO4. The TG curve of HZT-MEC had a single peak. A uniform compositional distribution at the atomic scale promoted the rapid interdiffusion of oxides, forming Ti-doped (Hf,Zr)O2 and (Hf,Zr)TiO4 without ZrO2, HfO2, and TiO2 after TG oxidation. Additionally, HZT-MEC had a higher onset oxidation temperature (To; 470 °C) than did HZT-MPC (430 °C), and the TG single peak of HZT-MEC was between the TG bimodal peaks of HZT-MPC. Therefore, HZT-MEC showed superior oxidation resistance compared to HZT-MPC, which was attributed to the entropy stabilization effect of HZT-MEC suppressing the “preferential oxidation” of HfC/ZrC and the “delayed oxidation” of TiC, promoting the synergistic oxidation ability of multiple principal elements.

Ultra-high-temperature ceramic nanowires have shown increasing potential for use as thermal structural components. Herein, novel single-crystal Hf0.5Ta0.5C solid solution nanowires were synthesized and incorporated with a HfC coating to construct a robust structure with Hf0.5Ta0.5C solid solution nanowires uniformly distributed and interconnected within the coating. The novel Hf0.5Ta0.5C solid solution nanowires could effectively hinder crack propagation through crack tip pinning and crack deflection. This mechanism substantially enhanced the elastic modulus and fracture toughness of the HfC coating by 53.29% and 59.67%, respectively. The toughened HfC coating displayed superior fracture toughness and good interfacial binding strength with the substrate to resist severe oxidation and scouring. Additionally, the high thermal conductivity of the toughened HfC coating promoted heat transmission. Thus, in comparison to the pure HfC coating, the toughened HfC coating displayed smaller mass and linear ablation rates of −0.35 mg·s−1 and −0.46 μm·s−1, which decreased by 39.66% and 36.98%, respectively. Our work not only simultaneously enhances the mechanical properties and ablation resistance of HfC-coated carbon/carbon (C/C) composites but also provides novel prospects for advanced ultrahigh-temperature ceramic nanowires under extreme conditions.

Scandium is very expensive and limits the application potential of Sc containing alloys. A novel high-strength Al–Mg–Mn-Sc-Zr alloy was designed for reducing Sc. Multiple strengthening mechanisms were utilized for designing this alloy, especially for the solid solution strengthening which benefits from ultrahigh cooling. With the addition of Mn and Si, the strength of our alloy reaches comparable level of similar alloys while the Sc content is 40–60 % less than them. The effect of Mn addition on microstructure and mechanical properties were carefully studied. Near full-dense samples with relative density >99.88 % were obtained with the help of overlapping prediction model. The continuous Mg2Si network was observed with Si introduction and broken up with increasing Mn content. According to the tensile experiment results and corresponding calculations, it was considered that the thermal stability and the effect of precipitate strengthening was slightly deteriorated. However, obvious improvement of the tensile strength was observed with increasing Mn addition, and the ductility maintains in a certain range. After aging at 280 °C for 4 h, the sample of 1.4 wt% Mn exhibits the highest ultimate strength of 497.08 ± 7.22 MPa, and possesses a considerable ductility of 8.01 ± 0.34 %. The Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect was observed in stress-strain curves, which reflects a dynamic strain aging of mobile dislocations and solute atoms. After aging, the stress amplitude and waiting time of serration flow decrease obviously, because of the introduction of bypassing precipitates and reduction of diffusion time. Compared with other similar alloys, our alloy exhibited comparable yield strength and elongation, but considerable advantages in material costs resulting from lower Sc content. It will offer not only an idea for alloy design utilizing the ultra-high solid solubility of elements, but also a feasible way to further expand application field of high-strength Al-based alloys through reducing the material costs.

In recent years, high-entropy metal carbides (HECs) have attracted significant attention due to their exceptional physical and chemical properties. The combination of excellent performance exhibited by bulk HEC ceramics and distinctive geometric characteristics has paved the way for the emergence of one-dimensional (1D) HECs as novel materials with unique development potential. Herein, we successfully fabricated novel (Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)C nanowires derived via Fe-assisted single-sourced precursor pyrolysis. Prior to the synthesis of the nanowires, the composition and microstructure of (Ti,Zr,Hf,Nb,Ta)-containing precursor (PHECs) were analyzed, and divinylbenzene (DVB) was used to accelerate the conversion process of the precursor and contribute to the formation of HECs, which also provided a partial carbon source for the nanowire growth. Additionally, multi-branched, single-branched, and single-branched bending nanowires were synthesized by adjusting the ratio of PHECs to DVB. The obtained single-branched (Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)C nanowires possessed smooth surfaces with an average diameter of 130–150 nm and a length of several tens of micrometers, which were a single-crystal structure and typically grew along the [11¯1] direction. Also, the growth of the (Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)C nanowires was in agreement with top-type vapor–liquid–solid mechanism. This work not only successfully achieved the fabrication of HEC nanowires by a catalyst-assisted polymer pyrolysis, but also provided a comprehensive analysis of the factors affecting their yield and morphology, highlighting the potential application of these attractive nano-materials.

Wind energy holds potential for in-situ powering large-scale distributed wireless sensor nodes (WSNs) in the Internet of Things (IoT) era. To achieve high performance in wind energy harvesting, a coaxial counter-rotating triboelectric nanogenerator with lift–drag hybrid blades, termed CCR-TENG, has been proposed. The CCR-TENG, which can work in non-contact and soft-contact modes, realizes low-speed wind energy harvesting through a combination of counter-clockwise rotating lift-type blades and clockwise rotating drag-type blades. Non-contact CCR-TENG realizes low-speed wind energy harvesting at wind speeds as low as 1 m/s. The output of a CCR-TENG, working in soft-contact mode, achieves 41% promotion with a maximum short-circuit current of 0.11 mA and a peak surface power density of 6.2 W/m2 with two TENGs connected in parallel. Furthermore, the power density per unit of wind speed achieves 746 mW/m3·s/m. Consequently, two fluorescent lamps were successfully illuminated and six temperature sensors were continuously lit by the CCR-TENG. The reported CCR-TENG significantly improves low-speed environmental wind energy utilization and demonstrates broad application prospects for in-situ power supply of distributed wireless transmission devices and sensors in the era of the IoT.

Aeromagnetic anomaly has the obvious advantages of wide coverage, low cost and high lateral resolution in geological structure research, and has been widely used in concealed magmatic rock and faults detection, tectonic characteristics (e.g. subduction zone, continental rift, dike swarm and mantle plume) analysis, magnetic interfaces (including crystalline basement and Curie Point Depth) inversion, regional tectonic division and study on seismogenic tectonic background. Recently, with the rapid development of aeromagnetic survey technology, more and more high-precision and high-resolution aeromagnetic data have been accumulated, and new global/regional aeromagnetic anomaly maps/models have been generated on this basis. In analyzing and inverting the position, shape, trend and buried depth of field source from aeromagnetic anomaly, various boundary identification techniques such as reduction to the pole, upward continuation, derivations (including vertical and horizontal derivative, oblique derivative, analytic signal amplitude and combinations of derivatives), Euler deconvolution and magnetic boundaries or magnetic susceptibility inversion have been developed. This paper organizes and summarizes rock magnetism and uncertainty of interpretation of magnetic anomalies, introduces various magnetic data analysis and inversion methods, reviews the geological and tectonic applications in different aspects, and discusses and prospects the development of aeromagnetic detection, data analysis and tectonic application in the future. As the basis of aeromagnetic anomaly interpretation, the characteristics of susceptibility of rocks are summarized as follows: the susceptibility of minerals is positively correlated with their iron content. Rock susceptibility is mainly determined by the less abundant content of ferromagnetic minerals (mainly magnetite). The current susceptibility measurements are still not representative enough, thus more in-situ detections especially deep rock samplings are in need and three-dimensional susceptibility models of the continental lithosphere need to be established in the future. In the interpretation of aeromagnetic anomalies, attentions should be paid to the influence of uncertainties, which include non-uniqueness of the inverse problem, annulator, demagnetization, field-source superposition and induced-remanent magnetization separation. For various boundary recognition and inversion techniques to detect the location and buried depth of magnetic sources by aeromagnetic anomalies, it is necessary to be familiar with the advantages and limitations of each technique, and select them according to different research objectives. For example, vertical derivative can be used to identify the center of the source, horizontal derivative can be used to identify the boundary, and oblique derivative can be effectively used to identify the deep source. When magnetic anomaly analysis is applied in geological structure study, appropriate means should be selected according to specific structural problems. For example, to detect concealed magmatic rocks or concealed faults near the surface, the first-order vertical derivative or total horizontal derivative analysis can be used. For the buried depth of rock or the deep distribution of fault zone, qualitative analysis of upward continuation, semi-quantitative analysis of Euler deconvolution and quantitative analysis of three-dimensional magnetic susceptibility inversion can be applied.

A TiB2/AlMgScZr composite was fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) with direct powder mixing. The microstructure and mechanical properties of SLM-fabricated TiB2/AlMgScZr composites were investigated. Nearly fully dense and crack-free SLM-fabricated TiB2/AlMgScZr parts were obtained. The results showed that TiB2 formed a coherent relationship with the matrix and was swallowed by the solid–liquid interface as a nucleation point to refine grains during the SLM process. In addition, some TiB2 particles did not form a coherent relationship with the matrix, moving the solid–liquid interface at the grain boundary, which reduced the recrystallization fraction and refined the grains significantly. TiB2 also promoted the precipitation of Al3Sc and Al3Zr phases and increased the volume fraction of the Al3Sc and Al3Zr phases during the SLM process. The SLM-fabricated TiB2/AlMgScZr composites showed a very high ultimate tensile strength of ∼483 MPa and excellent ductility of ∼15.8%, which are higher than those of wrought Al alloys. The solid solubility of the Mg element slightly increased in the SLM-fabricated TiB2/AlMgScZr composites because of the high heating and cooling rate during the SLM process. The high heating and cooling rate caused discontinuous strain and Portevin–Le Chatelier effect and weakened the strengthening effect of TiB2 in SLM-fabricated TiB2/AlMgSc composites.

Climatic factors have a strong influence on the occurrence of forest diseases and pests, but few studies have systematically analyzed the influence of spring climatic factors on the occurrence of forest diseases and pests in China. We collected inventory data of forest resources, forest diseases, and pest occurrences and then analyzed the spatial and temporal characteristics of China’s forest diseases and pests from 1992–2019. Next, we took spring temperature accumulations ≥ 10 °C, spring average precipitation, and spring average radiation as the spring climatic factors and analyzed their influence on China’s forest diseases and pests with partial correlation and piecewise trend methods. The results showed that the incidence rate of forest diseases and pests in China had a nonlinear decreasing trend that occurred simultaneously with the growth of forested areas and the increase in forest pest and disease areas. Ultimately, the increase in forest pest and disease areas stabilized at low levels of 1% and 4%, respectively. This change generated a spatial shift from an east–west to a north–south pattern in China. Additionally, the average turning points of forest disease and pest incidence trends in China occurred in 2000 and 2005, where 56.7% and 63.3% of provinces, respectively, experienced significant shifts in forest disease and pest incidence. Finally, spring meteorological elements had a significant role in driving the mechanisms of forest disease and pest incidence in China. Among these, spring temperature accumulation was a major contributor in disease and pest variability in China. However, spring radiation and spring precipitation were important local drivers in Southwest China, though these two factors had two opposing shifts in forest diseases and pests reflected over time. This study systematically analyzed the impact of climate change on the development of forest diseases and pests in China, helping clarify the future control of forest diseases and pests in China.

Many antigens from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) have been demonstrated as strong immunogens and proved to have application potential as vaccine candidate antigens. Cyclic di-AMP (c-di-AMP) as a bacterial second messenger regulates various bacterial processes as well as the host immune responses. Rv2837c, the c-di-AMP phosphodiesterase (CnpB), was found to be relative to virulence of M. tuberculosis and interference with host innate immune response. In this study, recombinant CnpB was administered subcutaneously to mice. We found that CnpB had strong immunogenicity and induced high levels of humoral response and lung mucosal immunity after M. tuberculosis intranasally infection. CnpB immunization stimulated splenocyte proliferation and the increasing number of activated NK cells but had little effects on Th1/Th2 cellular immune responses in spleens. However, CnpB induced significant Th1/Th2 cellular immune responses with a decreased number of T and B cells in the lungs, and significantly recruits of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells after M. tuberculosis attenuated strain H37Ra infection. Besides, we first reported that CnpB could stimulate IFN-β expression transitorily and inhibit the autophagy of macrophages in vitro. In mice intranasally infection model, CnpB immunization alleviated pathological changes and reduced M. tuberculosis H37Ra loads in the lungs. Thus, our results suggested that CnpB interferes with host innate and adaptive immune responses and confers protection against M. tuberculosis respiratory infection, which should be considered in vaccine development as well as a drug target.

The formation of magnetic minerals is bound up with the tectonic evolution history, whereupon the distribution of magnetic anomalies has great meanings for regional tectonics. In this study, we use the latest global lithospheric magnetic field model EMAG2-v3, processed by various techniques including reduction to the pole (RTP), upward continuation, derivations, Euler deconvolution, estimation of total magnetization direction, and Curie point depth (CPD), to unveil the tectonics around Longmenshan fault zone (LFZ). LFZ is clearly displayed as a positive and negative anomaly transition zone in RTP anomalies and acts as a magnetic basement boundary. The Sichuan Basin (SB), located to the east of LFZ, is marked by strong magnetic basement and NE-strike banded induced positive anomalies which are associated with the Neoproterozoic magmatic activity. The banded shape, absence of radial pattern of anomalies, and existence of fossil subduction zone supports that the magnetic basement was formed in arc environment. The CPD in SB estimated by radial average power spectral is 30–51 km, which allows magnetic minerals in deep crust or even in lithospheric mantle to exhibit high magnetizations. The Songpan-Ganzi fold belt (SGFB), in contrast, is located to the west of LFZ and covered by thick and low-susceptibility Triassic deposits of flysch, manifests as weak negative anomalies caused by relatively shallow CPD and widespread remanent magnetization. Significant positive anomalies, appearing around the Manai and Rilonguan granitic massifs, indicate a strong magnetic basement beneath SGFB, which is conjectured as westward extension of the Yangtze Block at depth.

Pine wilt disease (PWD) is the most dangerous biohazard of pine species and poses a serious threat to forest resources. Coupling satellite remote sensing technology and deep learning technology for the accurate monitoring of PWD is an important tool for the efficient prevention and control of PWD. We used Gaofen-2 remote sensing images to construct a dataset of discolored standing tree samples of PWD and selected three semantic segmentation models—DeepLabv3+, HRNet, and DANet—for training and to compare their performance. To build a GAN-based semi-supervised semantic segmentation model for semi-supervised learning training, the best model was chosen as the generator of generative adversarial networks (GANs). The model was then optimized for structural adjustment and hyperparameter adjustment. Aimed at the characteristics of Gaofen-2 images and discolored standing trees with PWD, this paper adopts three strategies—swelling prediction, raster vectorization, and forest floor mask extraction—to optimize the image identification process and results and conducts an application demonstration study in Nanping city, Fujian Province. The results show that among the three semantic segmentation models, HRNet was the optimal conventional semantic segmentation model for identifying discolored standing trees of PWD based on Gaofen-2 images and that its MIoU value was 68.36%. Additionally, the GAN-based semi-supervised semantic segmentation model GAN_HRNet_Semi improved the MIoU value by 3.10%, and its recognition segmentation accuracy was better than the traditional semantic segmentation model. The recall rate of PWD discolored standing tree monitoring in the demonstration area reached 80.09%. The combination of semi-supervised semantic segmentation technology and high-resolution satellite remote sensing technology provides new technical methods for the accurate wide-scale monitoring, prevention, and control of PWD.

Pervasive and continuous energy solutions are highly desired in the era of the Internet of Things for powering wide-range distributed devices/sensors. Wind energy has been widely regarded as an ideal energy source for distributed devices/sensors due to the advantages of being sustainable and renewable. Herein, we propose a high-performance flag-type triboelectric nanogenerator (HF-TENG) to efficiently harvest widely distributed and highly available wind energy. The HF-TENG is composed of one piece of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane and two carbon-coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) membranes with their edges sealed up. Two ingenious internal-structure designs significantly improve the output performance. One is to place the supporting sponge strips between the PTFE and the carbon electrodes, and the other is to divide the PTFE into multiple pieces to obtain a multi-degree of freedom. Both methods can improve the degree of contact and separation between the two triboelectric materials while working. When the pair number of supporting sponge strips is two and the degree of freedom is five, the maximum voltage and current of HF-TENG can reach 78 V and 7.5 μA, respectively, which are both four times that of the untreated flag-type TENG. Additionally, the HF-TENG was demonstrated to power the LEDs, capacitors, and temperature sensors. The reported HF-TENG significantly promotes the utilization of the ambient wind energy and sheds some light on providing a pervasive and sustainable energy solution to the distributed devices/sensors in the era of the Internet of Things.

With the development of intelligent ship, types of advanced sensors are in great demand for monitoring the work conditions of ship machinery. In the present work, a self-powered and highly accurate vibration sensor based on bouncing-ball triboelectric nanogenerator (BB-TENG) is proposed and investigated. The BB-TENG sensor consists of two copper electrode layers and one 3D-printed frame filled with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) balls. When the sensor is installed on a vibration exciter, the PTFE balls will continuously bounce between the two electrodes, generating a periodically fluctuating electrical signals whose frequency can be easily measured through fast Fourier transform. Experiments have demonstrated that the BB-TENG sensor has a high signal-to-noise ratio of 34.5 dB with mean error less than 0.05% at the vibration frequency of 10 Hz to 50 Hz which covers the most vibration range of the machinery on ship. In addition, the BB-TENG can power 30 LEDs and a temperature sensor by converting vibration energy into electricity. Therefore, the BB-TENG sensor can be utilized as a self-powered and highly accurate vibration sensor for condition monitoring of intelligent ship machinery.
