Hybrid composites comprising conducting nanowires (NWs) and insulating particulate fillers exhibit varying trends in their electrical conductivity based on the conditions of the constituent fillers. This study presents a quantitative model that comprehensively describes these changes, encompassing both increasing and decreasing trends. The model is formulated as an equation with two parameters quantifying the excluded volume effect and the NW bending effect, which are considered the primary factors determining NW network morphology in the composites. The influence of the parameters on the electrical conductivity of hybrid composites is analyzed with respect to the size and content of the constituent fillers using Monte Carlo-based simulations and statistical regression techniques. Numerical investigations reveal that distinct conductivity patterns under various particulate filler dimensions result from the interplay of these effects. The proposed model, validated through 2-D and 3-D simulations, effectively captures these complex interactions across diverse configurations of the constituent fillers.

Abstract Introduction SB15 is a proposed biosimilar product of reference aflibercept (Eylea®), an approved biological drug product for retinal diseases including neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). This study aimed to assess the analytical similarity between SB15 and its commercially available reference product (RP) sourced from the United States (US-aflibercept) and European Union (EU-aflibercept) in terms of structural, physicochemical, and biological properties. Methods A panel of state-of-the-art analytical methods was used for the comprehensive characterization of SB15 and US/EU-aflibercept. In terms of the structural and physicochemical properties, primary structure; post-translational modifications (PTM); higher-order structure; purity and impurities; charge variants; and glycosylation were compared. In addition, biological characterization including mechanism of action (MoA)-related and Fc-related biological activities was conducted. Results Analytical similarity between SB15 and US/EU-aflibercept was demonstrated. The primary and higher-order structure of SB15 was confirmed to be comparable to that of US/EU-aflibercept. In addition, there were no meaningful differences in the physicochemical properties in terms of size and charge heterogeneity between SB15 and its RP. SB15 and RP were similar in biological activities including MoA-related binding activities, potencies, and Fc-related biological functions. Consequently, SB15 was confirmed to be highly similar to US/EU-aflibercept. Conclusions Based on a comprehensive analytical similarity assessment of structural, physicochemical, and biological properties, SB15 was demonstrated to be highly similar to US/EU-aflibercept RP, supporting safe and effective use of SB15.

AbstractPersonalized educational interventions have been shown to facilitate successful and inclusive statistics, mathematics, and data science (SMDS) in higher education through timely and targeted reduction of heterogeneous training disparities caused by years of cumulative, structural challenges in contemporary educational systems. However, the burden on the institutions and instructors to provide personalized training resources to large groups of students is also formidable, and often unsustainable. We present Individualized Pathways and Resources to Adaptive Control Theory-Inspired Scientific Education (iPRACTISE), a free, publicly available web app that serves as a tool to facilitate personalized trainings on SMDS and related topics through provision of personalized training recommendations as informed by computerized assessments and individuals’ training preferences. We describe the resources available in iPRACTISE, and some proof-of-concept evaluation results from deploying iPRACTISE to supplement in-person and online classroom teaching in real-life settings. Strengths, practical difficulties, and potentials for future applications of iPRACTISE to crowdsource and sustain personalized SMDS education are discussed.

Abstract Previous research has suggested that the impact of smoke affected wines require human evaluation due to in‐mouth changes in perception, perhaps associated with saliva. Smoke affected wines (n = 36) from three major wine growing regions in the US were sourced from commercial wineries. A subset of these wines (n = 7) were evaluated by a consumer panel (n = 57) and electronic tongue (e‐tongue) to determine the influence of saliva in the sensory profile. Consumers assessed the wines for aroma and other sensory attributes, before and after individual saliva addition. Pooled saliva from consumers was used to treat all wines obtained (n = 36) and then analyzed using the e‐tongue. Results showed that saliva did not significantly alter the overall aroma, other than fruity or woody aroma liking by consumers (p > .05). However, the presence of saliva significantly lowered overall liking in both red and white wines that were affected by smoke (p ≤ .05). Consumers rated the subset of smoke affected wines below the “might purchase” category, indicating these wines were not considered acceptable by consumers. When individual pairs of smoke affected wines (before and after saliva additions) were assessed using the e‐tongue, the device was able to differentiate the pairs, validating potential usefulness to discern wine changes, though the discrimination indices were moderate to low (68.8% to 11.9%). Based on these data, in human ratings of the aroma and appearance of smoked affected wines, saliva decreased overall liking, and this was somewhat distinguishable by e‐tongue analysis.

Background To determine whether baseline thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) bioassay or its early response upon treatment with an anti-thyroid drug (ATD) can predict prognosis of Graves’ disease (GD) in real-world practice. Methods This retrospective study enrolled GD patients who had previous ATD treatment with TSI bioassay checked at baseline and at follow-up from April 2010 to November 2019 in one referral hospital. The study population were divided into two groups: patients who experienced relapse or continued ATD (relapse/persistence), and patients who experienced no relapse after ATD discontinuation (remission). The slope and area under the curve at 1st year (AUC1yr) of thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor antibodies including TSI bioassay and thyrotropin-binding inhibitory immunoglobulin (TBII) were calculated as differences between baseline and second values divided by time duration (year). Results Among enrolled 156 study subjects, 74 (47.4%) had relapse/persistence. Baseline TSI bioassay values did not show significant differences between the two groups. However, the relapse/persistence group showed less decremental TSI bioassay in response to ATD than the remission group (–84.7 [TSI slope, –198.2 to 8.2] vs. –120.1 [TSI slope, –204.4 to –45.9], P=0.026), whereas the TBII slope was not significantly different between the two groups. The relapse/persistence group showed higher AUC1yr of TSI bioassay and TBII in the 1st year during ATD treatment than the remission group (AUC1yr for TSI bioassay, P=0.0125; AUC1yr for TBII, P=0.001). Conclusion Early changes in TSI bioassay can better predict prognosis of GD than TBII. Measurement of TSI bioassay at beginning and follow-up could help predict GD prognosis.

This is the first report of how grapevine leafroll-associated virus 3 (GLRaV-3) infected vines impact Idaho grown ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ grape quality. A single block of plants selected based on molecular testing, with pairs of healthy and GLRaV-3 infected vines, was examined for grape quality for three consecutive growing seasons. Grapes from GLRaV-3 infected vines had significantly higher concentrations of total organic acids (both tartaric acid and malic acid were elevated), and were significantly lower in total anthocyanins (10 mg/100 g difference), total phenolics (40 mg/100 g difference), total tannins (63 mg/100 g difference), and total free amino acids (43 mg/kg difference; nine free amino acids) compared to healthy vines. Cluster weights and concentrations of total sugars (glucose and fructose), and yeast assimilable nitrogen content, were not different between healthy and infected vines. Based on these findings, some quality elements of Idaho ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ grapes important in wine production were negatively impacted by GLRaV-3 infection.

Abstract Northern root‐knot nematode (Meloidogyne hapla) and ring nematode (Mesocriconema xenoplax) are the most prevalent plant‐parasitic nematodes of wine grapes in the Pacific Northwest, but M. hapla is most important in eastern Washington and M. xenoplax in western Oregon. These regions differ edaphically where Washington soils are minimally weathered and alkaline while Oregon soils are highly weathered and acidic. To examine the effect of soil texture and pH on nematode reproduction, an alkaline, sandy loam soil (pH 7.9) from Washington and an acidic loam soil from Oregon (pH 5.4) were modified to the other pH extreme, and to a middle pH of 6.9. Tomatoes were planted into each soil/pH combination, and either 500 M. hapla second‐stage juveniles or M. xenoplax individuals were added to each pot. After 7 weeks, plants were harvested, three roots collected for analysis, remaining roots and leaves dried and weighed, and nematode population densities determined as eggs on roots (M. hapla) and nematodes in soil (M. xenoplax). Soil texture (sandy loam or loam) had no effect on either nematode, but M. hapla reproduction was greater in the lowest pH soil while M. xenoplax was unaffected by soil pH. Mesocriconema xenoplax parasitism reduced root length and root tip number, whereas M. hapla increased root mass in the highest pH Washington soil. Under these experimental conditions, it appears vineyard soil texture in the Pacific Northwest is not a determining factor in population growth of these nematodes, but M. hapla performed better at low pH.

ABSTRACT Streptococcus parauberis is the dominant etiological agent of streptococcosis, the most devastating bacterial disease in the olive flounder farming industry in South Korea. In this study, the distribution of serotypes, antimicrobial susceptibility, and presence of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in S. parauberis isolates obtained between 1999 and 2021 was thoroughly investigated to gain insight into the dynamics of their presence and the relationship between serotypes and antimicrobial resistance. Disk diffusion testing of 103 isolates against 10 antimicrobial agents was performed, and epidemiological cut-off values generated through normalized resistance interpretation analysis were used to classify wild-type (WT) and non-wild-type (NWT) populations. Principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering were implemented to achieve an understanding on the relationship between serotypes and antimicrobial resistance patterns. PCR-based serotyping showed that serotype Ia (67.1%) was the most prevalent in South Korea, followed by serotypes Ib/Ic (25.2%) and II (7.7%). The highest proportion of isolates was assigned to NWT against amoxicillin (80.6%), followed by oxytetracycline (77.7%) and erythromycin (48.5%). The time-scale data showed that recently obtained serotypes Ib/Ic and II isolates tended to be categorized as NWT populations resistant to more antibiotics, possibly due to microbial adaptation to antibiotic pressure. ARGs responsible for resistance to oxytetracycline and erythromycin were found only in NWT populations in serotype Ia [tet(S) and erm(B), respectively], and serotype II [tet(M) and mef(J)-msr(I), respectively]. We also found that the mef-msr gene pair in S. parauberis serotype II might be involved in low-level resistance to erythromycin. IMPORTANCE This study presents serotype distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility data along with the antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) of Streptococcus parauberis, which is an important bacterial fish pathogen worldwide. In particular, almost all oxytetracycline and erythromycin non-wild-type (NWT) populations harbored tet(S) or tet(M), and erm(B) or mef(J)-msr(I), respectively. Interestingly, these ARGs were distributed in a highly serotype-dependent manner, resulting in a clear correlation between the antibiogram and serotype distribution. Moreover, recent isolates belonging to serotypes Ib/Ic and II tended to be more frequently categorized as NWT against antimicrobials, including amoxicillin and cefalexin compared to old isolates, while a dramatic decrease in erythromycin and clindamycin NWT frequencies was observed in recent serotype Ia isolates, which lacked erm(B). These variations might be attributed to shifts in the antibiotics employed in South Korean aquaculture over time. The overall findings would provide important background knowledge for understanding the epidemiology of S. parauberis infection in aquaculture.

Healthcare professionals should support autonomy in their patients in order for them to maintain the motivation to cope actively with their conditions. The Health Care Climate Questionnaire (HCCQ) is useful for assessing patients’ perceptions of the autonomy support provided to them. We aimed to validate the psychometric properties of the Korean version of the HCCQ (HCCQ-K) among Korean cancer survivors. This study evaluated the factor structure, concurrent validity, and internal consistency. Data from 367 cancer survivors were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), Pearson’s correlations, and Cronbach’s α values. The CFA validated that the single-factor structure of the HCCQ-K had an excellent fit that was consistent with that of the original English version. Concurrent validity was confirmed by moderate correlations between the HCCQ-K and both psychological well-being and self-management. Reliability was verified by satisfactory internal consistency, with a Cronbach’s α value of 0.91 and strong item-total and inter-item correlations. The HCCQ-K is therefore a valid and reliable tool for assessing autonomy support provided by healthcare professionals to Korean cancer survivors. The HCCQ-K may help healthcare professionals understand their patients’ needs for autonomy support and develop strategies to motivate active coping behaviors.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 variants have continuously emerged globally, including in South Korea. To characterize the molecular evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in South Korea, we performed phylogenetic and genomic recombination analyses using more than 12,000 complete genome sequences collected until October 2022. The variants in South Korea originated from globally identified variants of concern and harbored genetic clade-common and clade-specific amino acid mutations mainly around the N-terminal domain (NTD) or receptor binding domain (RBD) in the spike protein. Several point mutation residues in key antigenic sites were under positive selection persistently with changing genetic clades of SARS-CoV-2. Furthermore, we detected 17 potential genomic recombinants and 76.4% (13/17) retained the mosaic NTD or RBD genome. Our results suggest that point mutations and genomic recombination in the spike contributed to the molecular evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in South Korea, which will form an integral part of global prevention and control measures against SARS-CoV-2.

IntroductionMany parents do not engage in active discussions with their children about sexuality. This can contribute to negative sexual and reproductive health outcomes among youth. To foster a healthy environment for sexual activity, it is crucial for parents to provide comprehensive sex education to their children at home. This study aims to cross-culturally adapt and evaluate the psychometric properties of a Korean version of the Parenting Outcome Expectancy Scale to measure the sexual communication abilities of parents of elementary school students in South Korea.MethodThe study participants were parents of elementary school students between 6 to 13 years old. We used exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to examine the reliability and validity of the 23-item Korean version of the Parenting Outcome Expectancy Scale.ResultsThe study confirms the reliability and validity of the scale, comprising five factors and 22 items, for the evaluation of the outcome expectancy of communication about sex between parents and their children. Results also demonstrate that talking about sex is still a challenge for many parents.DiscussionThis instrument can help parents prepare for sex communication with their children and for sexual education, potentially yielding a positive effect on children’s sexual health and parental satisfaction.

IntroductionThis study examined occupational values, communication types, job satisfaction, and organisational commitment among clinical nurses across generations.MethodsParticipants were 159 clinical nurses. Data were collected from 1 to 15 August, 2022, using a self-reported questionnaire.ResultsStatistically significant differences were observed across generations in terms of job satisfaction (F = 3.492, p = 0.03) and organisational commitment (F = 4.371, p = 0.01). However, there were no differences in occupational values (F = 0.765, p = 0.47) or communication types (F = 1.744, p = 0.18) among clinical nurses across generations. There was a moderate to strong positive correlation between job satisfaction and organisational commitment across all generations, and a moderate positive correlation between job satisfaction and occupational values among Generations Y and Z.DiscussionTo improve the quality of nursing care, various intervention programs based on the generational gap among clinical nurses need to be developed, to reduce conflicts, and ultimately establishing the necessary systems through mutual understanding of education.

BackgroundAccording to a 2020 study by the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer (CRC) represents the third leading cause of cancer both in incidence and death in the United States. Nonetheless, CRC screening remains lower than that for other high-risk cancers such as breast and cervical cancer. Risk calculators are increasingly being used to promote cancer awareness and improve compliance with CRC screening tests. However, research concerning the effects of CRC risk calculators on the intention to undergo CRC screening has been limited. Moreover, some studies have found the impacts of CRC risk calculators to be inconsistent, reporting that receiving personalized assessments from such calculators lowers people’s risk perception. ObjectiveThe objective of this study is to examine the effect of using CRC risk calculators on individuals’ intentions to undergo CRC screening. In addition, this study aims to examine the mechanisms through which using CRC risk calculators might influence individuals’ intentions to undergo CRC screening. Specifically, this study focuses on the role of perceived susceptibility to CRC as a potential mechanism mediating the effect of using CRC risk calculators. Finally, this study examines how the effect of using CRC risk calculators on individuals’ intentions to undergo CRC screening may vary by gender. MethodsWe recruited a total of 128 participants through Amazon Mechanical Turk who live in the United States, have health insurance, and are in the age group of 45 to 85 years. All participants answered questions needed as input for the CRC risk calculator but were randomly assigned to treatment (CRC risk calculator results immediately received) and control (CRC risk calculator results made available after the experiment ended) groups. The participants in both groups answered a series of questions regarding demographics, perceived susceptibility to CRC, and their intention to get screened. ResultsWe found that using CRC risk calculators (ie, answering questions needed as input and receiving calculator results) has a positive effect on intentions to undergo CRC screening, but only for men. For women, using CRC risk calculators has a negative effect on their perceived susceptibility to CRC, which in turn reduces the intention to sign up for CRC screening. Additional simple slope and subgroup analyses confirm that the effect of perceived susceptibility on CRC screening intention is moderated by gender. ConclusionsThis study shows that using CRC risk calculators can increase individuals’ intentions to undergo CRC screening, but only for men. For women, using CRC risk calculators can reduce their intentions to undergo CRC screening, as it reduces their perceived susceptibility to CRC. Given these mixed results, although CRC risk calculators can be a useful source of information on one’s CRC risk, patients should be discouraged from relying solely on them to inform decisions regarding CRC screening.

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed immense pressure on healthcare workers, in particular, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses, who are at the forefront of managing critically ill COVID-19 patients. This has led to increased stressors and workload, which are associated with negative mental health outcomes such as depression, job stress, sleep disturbances, and burnout. However, COVID-19-related resilience may have mitigated these negative effects. ICU nurses with higher levels of COVID-19-related resilience may be better equipped to manage the stress and job demands during the pandemic, leading to improved mental health outcomes. Therefore, this study aimed to comprehensively explore the factors influencing the resilience of ICU nurses and provide baseline knowledge for future studies to develop interventions that promote COVID-19-related resilience. With shift work and COVID-19 experience with adult patients from hospitals across three regions of South Korea. The questionnaire included scales/measures of nurses’ depression, job stress, sleep quality, and burnout. Results confirmed that resilience was negatively correlated with depression and burnout, and that ICU nurses’ relative levels of resilience strongly influenced their experience of burnout. The findings of this study make a significant contribution to the literature because they focus on resilience, specifically in the context of ICU nursing in South Korea, which has become more challenging and demanding due to the pandemic.

Hyperpigmentation disorders causing emotional distress require the topical use of depigmenting agents of natural origin. In this study, the anti-melanogenic effects of the Lilium lancifolium root extract (LRE) were investigated in B16F10 cells. Consequently, a non-cytotoxic concentration of the extract reduced intracellular melanin content and tyrosinase activity in a dose-dependent manner, correlating with the diminished expression of core melanogenic enzymes within cells. LRE treatment also inhibited cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) response element-binding protein (CREB)/microphthalmia-associated transcription factor signaling, which regulates the expression of tyrosinase-related genes. Upon examining these findings from a molecular mechanism perspective, LRE treatment suppressed the phosphorylation of protein kinase A (PKA), p38, and extracellular signal-related kinase (ERK), which are upstream regulators of CREB. In addition, L-phenylalanine and regaloside A, specifically identified within the LRE using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, exhibited inhibitory effects on melanin production. Collectively, these results imply that LRE potentially suppresses cAMP-mediated melanogenesis by downregulating PKA/CREB and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)/CREB signaling pathways. Therefore, it can be employed as a novel therapeutic ingredient of natural origin to ameliorate hyperpigmentation disorders.

There is growing interest in alternative therapies for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) because some patients refuse to receive conventional therapies. In East Asia, herbal medicines are often used to treat T2DM, and modified Gangsimtang (mGST) is prescribed to treat a condition called wasting thirst (消渴), which resembles T2DM. This study reported the treatment of hyperglycemia using herbal medicines without oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin therapy. Case presentation: A 36-year-old man with obesity was diagnosed with T2DM four years prior to hospitalization and experienced blood glucose level reduction from 22.2–27.8 mmol/L (400–500 mg/dL) to 5.6–11.1 mmol/L (100–200 mg/dL) by using herbal medicines. He visited D Korean Medicine Hospital with chronic polydipsia and general weakness as chief complaints. He was diagnosed with T2DM on the basis of a hemoglobin A1c level of 11.7% and 2 h postprandial blood glucose level of >25.0 mmol/L (450 mg/dL). Moreover, he was diagnosed with a “dual deficiency of qi and yin” (氣陰兩虛) because of ordinary symptoms (素證). During his 30-day inpatient treatment, the patient received mGST 120 mL thrice daily; as a result, his postprandial blood glucose level decreased from 25.3 mmol/L (455 mg/dL) to 8.6 mmol/L (154 mg/dL), polydipsia decreased (visual analog scale score decreased from six to one), and triglyceride levels decreased from 11.7 mmol/L (1031 mg/dL) to 2.0 mmol/L (174 mg/dL). Plasma glucose levels remained stable for 6 months after the treatment, and no adverse events were observed over 200 days. We administered an herbal decoction to decrease plasma glucose levels without using oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. Conclusions: Herbal decoctions such as mGST can reduce hyperglycemia in patients with T2DM who refuse conventional therapy.

Abstract Representing subgrid variabilities of land surface processes and their upscaled effects is crucial for global climate modeling. Here, we implement a multiple atmosphere multiple land (MAML) framework in the superparamaterized version of E3SM (SP‐E3SM) to explicitly simulate the subgrid variabilities of land states and fluxes at cloud‐resolving scale and their interactions with atmosphere. Comparing to the standard SP‐E3SM in which all the atmospheric columns of the cloud resolving model embedded within the global atmospheric model grid interact with the same land surface (i.e., multiple atmosphere single land (MASL)), the impact of MAML on the strength of land‐atmosphere coupling is limited, partly because the current implementation mainly facilitates one‐way coupling between the cloud‐resolving model and the land surface model. Despite such limitation, MAML increases the surface latent heat flux at the expense of sensible heat flux, and increases precipitation in India, Amazon, and Central Africa, reducing the model dry bias compared to the standard SP‐E3SM. By employing a normalized gross moist stability (NGMS) diagnostic framework, we find that the increase in precipitation minus evaporation (P‐E) is primarily driven by the change in large‐scale moisture convergence, particularly by the increase of water vapor in the lower atmosphere, while the local effect of total surface energy flux plays a minor role in the P‐E change. More specifically, MAML changes the surface energy partitioning (evaporative fraction), increases the atmosphere water vapor, and further increases P‐E by decreasing the NGMS. Finally, future development in the MAML framework is discussed.

Background/Aims Patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) have low levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). There is accumulating evidence that BCAAs have anti-fibrotic effects in cirrhosis. This study is aimed to evaluate the effect of BCAAs on the function and phenotype of activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Methods LX-2, an immortalized human stellate cell line, was used in in vitro experiments. LX-2 cells were exposed to transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) and BCAAs or to valine, leucine, and isoleucine, which are components of BCAAs. Activation of the TGF-β signaling pathway in LX-2 cells was observed using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. Results The increased expression of snail family transcriptional repressor 1 (SNAI1) was observed in LX-2 cells activated by TGF-β1. After BCAA treatment, its expression was significantly decreased at the mRNA level. The increased expression of Col1α1 and TIMP2 at the mRNA level and alpha smooth muscle actin at the protein level in activated LX-2 cells decreased after BCAA treatment. Among the BCAA components, leucine and valine significantly abrogated TGF-β-induced activation of LX-2 cells. BCAA treatment led to the decreased phosphorylation of Smad2 and p38 proteins, which are markers for Smad and Smad-independent p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathways, respectively. Conclusions BCAA treatment can improve hepatic fibrosis by directly affecting the activated state of hepatic stellate cells through inhibition of the TGF-β signaling pathway. Among BCAA components, leucine and valine mainly abrogated TGF-β-induced activation of HSCs. Our results suggest that BCAA may be used to attenuate the progression of liver fibrosis.

This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Korean version of the perceived costs and benefits scale (K-PCBS) for sexual intercourse to deepen our understanding of the complex psychosocial and interpersonal elements influencing young people’s sexual decision-making. The study participants were 227 college students in South Korea aged 18–25 years. Two factors were extracted through factor analysis, accounting for 61.05% and 58.18% of the variance for perceived costs and perceived benefits, respectively, and showed a good model fit in the K-PCBS. Reliability was high, as indicated by Cronbach’s alphas of 0.87 and 0.84 for the perceived costs and perceived benefits subscales, respectively. The results indicate that the K-PCBS may serve as an appropriate instrument for measuring South Korean youth’s cost and benefit analysis regarding their sexual decision-making. Our study makes a significant contribution to the literature and field because it identifies the underlying feelings and attitudes of young adults toward engaging in sexual activities using the K-PCBS for sexual intercourse, which has good reliability, validity, and internal consistency.

Aim: This study aimed to analyze the reliability and validity of a Korean version of the Nursing Student Attitudes and Knowledge Toward Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Patients (K-NAKL) Scale, which measures health and heterosexual attitudes toward LGBT individuals. Background: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals often face discrimination and a lack of care experience on the part of healthcare professionals. Introduction: In South Korea, the current knowledge and attitude measurement tools for medical staff regarding LGBT individuals are limited, as they only focus on homosexuality and do not account for different sexual orientations. Methods: The participants were 217 nursing college students aged 18–25. The item–total correlations method and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient were used to analyze internal consistency reliability. Face validity, content validity, construct validity, and criterion validity testing were conducted to establish scale validity. We made sure to follow STROBE guidelines when carrying out this research. Results: The K-NAKL is a culturally appropriate instrument used to measure the attitudes and knowledge of Korean nursing students when it comes to LGBT health. Discussion: As LGBT health is increasingly gaining social interest, the nursing education curriculum needs to produce culturally competent graduates to meet the health needs of this vulnerable and marginalized population. The current study contributes to that goal. Conclusion: The K-NAKL is a valid and reliable tool with which to measure attitudes and knowledge regarding LGBT health among Korean nursing students. Implications for nursing: The K-NAKL can enable Korean nursing students to increase their knowledge and improve their attitudes when caring for the LGBT population. Implications for nursing policy and health policy: The study highlights the importance of incorporating LGBT-related health education into nursing curricula and developing inclusive policies to improve the quality of care and health outcomes for LGBT individuals.

Purpose This study presents a translation, cultural adaptation, and psychometric evaluation of two instruments of the Fertility Awareness and Attitudes Towards Parenthood (FAAP) questionnaire (Conditions and Life changes) for use in South Korea. Methods This methodological study included 166 university students for psychometric evaluation in the sixth step. The first five steps included forward translation, backward translation, committee review, assessment of content validity, and a pre-test. In the sixth step, psychometric properties, including internal consistency, construct validity, and criterion validity, were evaluated. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted to identify the structure of the tool and to assess its validity. Results The Korean version showed acceptable internal consistency. Cronbach's ⍺ was .73 for FAAPC-conditions and .83 for FAAP-Life changes. FAAP-Conditions showed a four-factor structure (social conditions, relationship with partner, external environment, and child-rearing support) and FAAP-Life changes had a two-factor structure (reward and burden). In the confirmatory analysis, CMIN/DF, TLI, IFI, SRMR, CFI, and RMSEA were satisfactory. Conclusion This study provided preliminary evidence of the acceptability, reliability, and validity of the Korean version of the FAAP questionnaire in university students in South Korea. Nonetheless, further evaluation among Korean young adults is warranted to validate this instrument.

In this work, the effect of rapid thermal annealing (RTA) temperature on the ferroelectric polarization in zirconium-doped hafnium oxide (HZO) was studied. To maximize remnant polarization (2Pr), in-plane tensile stress was induced by tungsten electrodes under optimal RTA temperatures. We observed an increase in 2Pr with RTA temperature, likely due to an increased proportion of the polar ferroelectric phase in HZO. The HZO capacitors annealed at 400°C did not exhibit any ferroelectric behavior, whereas the HZO capacitors annealed at 800°C became highly leaky and shorted for voltages above 1 V. On the other hand, annealing at 700 °C produced HZO capacitors with a record-high 2Pr of ∼ 64 μC cm−2 at a relatively high frequency of 111 kHz. These ferroelectric capacitors have also demonstrated impressive endurance and retention characteristics, which will greatly benefit neuromorphic computing applications.

Five virus genomes, ranging between 12.0 and 12.3 kb in length and identified as endornaviruses, were discovered through a high-throughput sequencing (HTS) analysis of the total RNA samples extracted from two wine grape cultivars collected in the State of Idaho. One was found in a declining Chardonnay vine and was determined to be a local isolate of grapevine endophyte endornavirus (GEEV), and four others represented two novel endornaviruses named grapevine endornavirus 1 (GEV1) and grapevine endornavirus 2 (GEV2). All three virus genomes span a large, single open reading frame encoding polyproteins with easily identifiable helicase (HEL) and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP) domains, while the GEV2 polyprotein also contains a glycosyltransferase domain. The GEV1 genome found in an asymptomatic Cabernet franc vine was related to, but distinct from, GEEV: the 5′-proximal, 4.7 kb segment of the GEV1 genome had a 72% identical nucleotide sequence to that of GEEV, while the rest of the genome displayed no significant similarity to the GEEV nucleotide sequence. Nevertheless, the amino acid sequence of the RdRP domain of GEV1 exhibited the closest affinity to the RdRP of GEEV. GEV2 was found in declining Chardonnay and asymptomatic Cabernet franc vines as three genetic variants exhibiting a 91.9–99.8% nucleotide sequence identity among each other; its RdRP had the closest affinity to the Shahe endorna-like virus 1 found in termites. In phylogenetic analyses, the RdRP and HEL domains of the GEV1 and GEV2 polyproteins were placed in two separate clades inside the large lineage of alphaendornaviruses, showing an affinity to GEEV and Phaseolus vulgaris endornavirus 1, respectively.

Electrophysiological biomarkers reflecting the pathological activities in the basal ganglia are essential to gain an etiological understanding of Parkinson's disease (PD) and develop a method of diagnosing and treating the disease. Previous studies that explored electrophysiological biomarkers in PD have focused mainly on oscillatory or periodic activities such as beta and gamma oscillations. Emerging evidence has suggested that the nonoscillatory, aperiodic component reflects the firing rate and synaptic current changes corresponding to cognitive and pathological states. Nevertheless, it has never been thoroughly examined whether the aperiodic component can be used as a biomarker that reflects pathological activities in the basal ganglia in PD. In this study, we examined the parameters of the aperiodic component in hemiparkinsonian rats and tested its practicality as an electrophysiological biomarker of pathological activity. We found that a set of aperiodic parameters, aperiodic offset and exponent, were significantly decreased by the nigrostriatal lesion. To further prove the usefulness of the parameters as biomarkers, acute levodopa treatment reverted the aperiodic offset. We then compared the aperiodic parameters with a previously established periodic biomarker of PD, beta frequency oscillation. We found a significantly low negative correlation with beta power. We showed that the performance of the machine learning-based prediction of pathological activities in the basal ganglia can be improved by using both beta power and the aperiodic component, which showed a low correlation with each other. We suggest that the aperiodic component will provide a more sensitive measurement to early diagnosis PD and have the potential to use as the feedback parameter for the adaptive deep brain stimulation.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of a violence-prevention education program using empathy (VPEP-E) on elementary school students. This quasi-experimental design examined fifth-grade students' (a) empathy level, (b) perception of violence, and (c) permissive and negligent attitudes toward violence, using a pre- and post-test design. A total of 101 students participated: the experimental group (n = 48) received eight sessions of VPEP-E, whereas the control group (n = 53) received violence prevention education through classroom lectures. Significant differences were observed between the groups' empathy level (t = 6.81, p < 0.001), perception of violence (t = 2.79, p = 0.006), and permissive and negligent attitudes toward violence (t = -2.21, p = 0.030; t = -2.02, p = 0.046). Thus, a school-based VPEP-E may help elementary school students. Long-term studies evaluating behavioral changes from VPEP-E implementation are needed for establishing the effects on violent behavior.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to gain insights into empathy, cyberbullying, and cybervictimization among Filipino adolescents. Methods The participants were 168 junior high school students in the 7th to 10th grades at a public high school in Cavite Province, Philippines. Data were collected on demographic characteristics, the Basic Empathy Scale, and Revised Cyber Bullying Inventory-II scores. The data were analyzed in SPSS using descriptive statistics (frequency and mean), the independent t-test, bivariate correlation, and one-way analysis of variance. Results The degree of empathy did not show a statistically significant relationship with cyberbullying (r=−.07, p=.359) but did show a significant relationship with cybervictimization (r=.18, p=.025). Purpose The purpose of this study was (a) to synthesize studies of condom use among South Korean college students, and (b) to appraise the quality of each article using Gough’s weight of evidence. Methods Studies published in English and Korean were searched in electronic databases using the terms “student or college student or university student or undergraduate”, “condom”, and “Korea*”. Results Twenty studies met the inclusion criteria, showed appropriate quality, and were therefore selected for review. The variables related to condom use were measured in terms of condom-related factors, factors related to non-condom-related knowledge and attitudes, and other factors. Knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy were associated with condom use, and there were differences in condom-related factors among men and women. Conclusion Based on these findings, it was confirmed that sexual education is needed for both men and women to promote condom use. Education on condom use should not only focus directly on condoms, but should also address other aspects of knowledge and attitudes to influence health beliefs. In addition, developing educational programs targeting adolescents and parents will have a positive effect on college students’ condom use.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is one of the most selective endothelial barriers that protect the brain and maintains homeostasis in neural microenvironments. This barrier restricts the passage of molecules into the brain, except for gaseous or extremely small hydrophobic molecules. Thus, the BBB hinders the delivery of drugs with large molecular weights for the treatment of brain cancers. Various methods have been used to deliver drugs to the brain by circumventing the BBB; however, they have limitations such as drug diversity and low delivery efficiency. To overcome this challenge, microbubbles (MBs)-based drug delivery systems have garnered a lot of interest in recent years. MBs are widely used as contrast agents and are recently being researched as a vehicle for delivering drugs, proteins, and gene complexes. The MBs are 1–10 μm in size and consist of a gas core and an organic shell, which cause physical changes, such as bubble expansion, contraction, vibration, and collapse, in response to ultrasound. The physical changes in the MBs and the resulting energy lead to biological changes in the BBB and cause the drug to penetrate it, thus enhancing the therapeutic effect. Particularly, this review describes a state-of-the-art strategy for fabricating MB-based delivery platforms and their use with ultrasound in brain cancer therapy.

Purpose This study describes the development of a violence prevention educational program for elementary school children using empathy (VPEP-E) that teachers can use during class. Methods Hoffman’s theory of empathy and Seels and Richey’s (1994) ADDIE model were applied to develop this program. Results The developed program consisted of eight sessions: “Orientation/definition of violence and empathy”, “Types and boundaries of violence”, “Look into my feelings”, “Say it with a facial expression”, “Preventing non-empathic violence due to social prejudice”, “Preventing physical violence”, “Verbal and online violence prevention: empathic conversation”, and “I can do well: review of the whole curriculum”. The program was evaluated by 15 elementary school teachers, who considered it to be easily accessible to elementary school students. The final VPEP-E, which will be provided in eight times for 40 minutes each for fifth-grade students, will provide a basis for preventing violence by fostering empathy. Conclusion We expect the developed educational program to be effective in preventing violence among elementary school students. However, further research involving children from various age groups is needed.

South Korea’s health officials did not disclose the identities of hospitals exposed to MERS-CoV for the first three weeks of the outbreak in 2015, leading to amplified fear in the society. To ascertain the uncertainty costs due to the failure of timely information provision, we examine the effect of the information regarding MERS outbreak on shopping patterns in the retail market. We find that those facing social buzz of MERS hospitals near their home significantly reduced their spending at crowded shopping places such as big-box and department stores. However, the avoidance behaviour disappeared after the government started to disclose the accurate information. This finding suggests that the information uncertainty raised excessive anxiety among the consumers.

Purpose This study investigated intentions and attitudes towards future parenthood and awareness of fertility among university students in South Korea. Methods The participants comprised 166 female and male undergraduate students enrolled at five universities. A cross-sectional survey was conducted from May to July 2019 using the Korean version of the Fertility Awareness Questionnaire and Attitudes of Parenthood. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics based on participants' general characteristics, the x2 test to identify differences in intentions, and the t-test to evaluate attitudes towards parenthood and awareness of fertility in female and male students. Results Both female and male students desired to have two children, but they lacked awareness about fertility. The possibility of combining work and having children, along with the availability of childcare resources, impacted the desire for parenthood. Male students tended to consider parenthood as less impactful on their lives and careers than female students. Social structures might also impact the decision to have children. Conclusion It is important to provide health education emphasizing fertility awareness and parenthood in young adulthood so participants can consider these facts in advance. In addition, the government should provide resources for couples making parenthood decisions.

Abstract Thalamic recruitment of feedforward inhibition is known to enhance the fidelity of the receptive field by limiting the temporal window during which cortical neurons integrate excitatory inputs. Feedforward inhibition driven by the mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus (MD) has been previously observed, but its physiological function and regulation remain unknown. Accumulating evidence suggests that elevated neuronal activity in the prefrontal cortex is required for the short-term storage of information. Furthermore, the elevated neuronal activity is supported by the reciprocal connectivity between the MD and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Therefore, detailed knowledge about the synaptic connections during high-frequency activity is critical for understanding the mechanism of short-term memory. In this study, we examined how feedforward inhibition of thalamofrontal connectivity is modulated by activity frequency. We observed greater short-term synaptic depression during disynaptic inhibition than in thalamic excitatory synapses during high-frequency activities. The strength of feedforward inhibition became weaker as the stimulation continued, which, in turn, enhanced the range of firing jitter in a frequency-dependent manner. We postulated that this phenomenon was primarily due to the increased failure rate of evoking action potentials in parvalbumin-expressing inhibitory neurons. These findings suggest that the MD-mPFC pathway is dynamically regulated by an excitatory-inhibitory balance in an activity-dependent manner. During low-frequency activities, excessive excitations are inhibited, and firing is restricted to a limited temporal range by the strong feedforward inhibition. However, during high-frequency activities, such as during short-term memory, the activity can be transferred in a broader temporal range due to the decreased feedforward inhibition.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to review pain alleviation intervention for Korean pediatric inpatients with reference to Kolcaba’s Theory of Comfort. Methods Whittemore and Knafl’s integrative review methods were used. Articles published in Korean or English were identified through electronic search engines and scholarly web sites. Scientific, peer-reviewed articles published between 2006 and 2019 were included in this review. Twenty-seven articles that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. Results Among the 27 selected studies, three were descriptive, while 24 were interventional studies related to pain alleviation interventions. Pain alleviation interventions showed three attributes: identifying pain triggers and the child’s response to pain, effective strategies for pain relief, and nurses’ competence in pain management. Conclusion The three attributes of pain alleviation interventions using the theory of comfort shown in this study were identified as important factors for obtaining evidence-based data on how to enhance the comfort of hospitalized pediatric patients. In addition, the attributes of pain alleviation interventions should be considered for hospitalized pediatric patients and their family members.

Background and Aims This retrospective study aimed to investigate the impact of positive hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc) and metabolic disorders on clinical characteristics of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients in an HBV-endemic area. Methods A total of 1950 consecutive patients newly diagnosed with HCC between 2002 and 2015 were included. Patient records were reviewed. We compared non-viral and non-alcoholic HCC patients with other etiological groups for HCC. In addition, we compared HCC patients with negative hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and positive anti-HBc to those with negative HBsAg and negative anti-HBc, and to those with HBV. Results The prevalence of non-viral and non-alcoholic HCC increased from 7% in 2002–2011 to 12% in 2012–2015. The proportion of non-viral and non-alcoholic HCC gradually increased with age. Patients with non-viral and non-alcoholic HCC exhibited higher rates of metabolic disorders and preserved liver function. The rate of anti-HBc positivity was similarly high in all HCC etiological groups. The clinical features of HCC patients with negative HBsAg and positive anti-HBc were similar to those with negative HBsAg and negative anti-HBc, but significantly different from those with HBV HCC. Regarding tumor characteristics, patients in the non-viral and non-alcoholic HCC group had more advanced stages of tumors (mUICC stage III–V and BCLC stage C/D). There was no significant difference in overall survival among the patient groups. The presence of anti-HBc did not affect patient survival. Conclusion Patients with non-viral and non-alcoholic HCC had a relatively high prevalence of metabolic disorders and preserved liver function. However, they had advanced tumor stage compared to patients from other etiological groups. Anti-HBc positivity did not affect the clinical characteristics or prognosis of non-HBV HCC patients in this study.

Body shape and curvature are vital criteria for judging health. However, few studies exist on the curvature of the body. We present a skin-interactive electronic sticker that digitally decodes the epidermis deformation in a hybrid cartridge format (disposable bandages and non-disposable kits). The device consists of two functional modes: (1) as a thin electronic sticker of 76 μm thickness and a node pitch of 7.45 mm for the measurement of body curvature in static mode, and (2) as a wrist bandage for the deciphering of skin wave fluctuations into a colored core-line map in dynamic mode. This method has high detection sensitivity in the static mode and high accuracy of 0.986 in the dynamic mode, resulting in an F1 score of 0.966 in testing by feedforward deep learning. The results show that the device can decipher 32 delicate finger folding gestures by measuring skin depths and positions via image segmentation, leading to an optimal core line in a color map. This approach can help provide a better understanding of skin wave deflection and fluctuations for potential wearable applications, such as in delicate skin-related gesture control in the metaverse, rehabilitation programs for the brain-degenerate, and as a detector of biophysical state relating to body shape and curvature in the field of digital medicine.

The numbers of commercial products containing açai fruit have been rapidly increasing in the US marketplace. Due to the açai palm's climatic requirements, the açai fruit portions of these products are imported, even when manufactured within the US. This work was conducted to assess the anthocyanin profiles and concentrations of açai products (total n = 56; dietary supplements n = 37; food products n = 19) available to US consumers. Eleven (20%) of the products examined had problematic anthocyanin profiles; seven had no detectable anthocyanins (all were dietary supplements), and four had anthocyanin profiles inconsistent with natural ingredients (3 dietary supplements, 1 food item). The remaining samples (n = 45) ranged widely in anthocyanin concentration, from 0.74 to 336.70 mg/100 g or 100 mL (average of 42.00), or 0.004 to 80.45 in mg/serving (average of 4.60). That range represented a 450-fold difference in anthocyanin concentration by mass (or volume), and 20,000-fold difference when calculated by serving. The açai dietary supplements (average 0.75 mg/serving) were significantly lower in anthocyanin than açai food products (average 10.38 mg/serving) on a mg per serving basis, an over 13-fold difference. Açai product anthocyanin values (in mg/100 g or 100 mL) were overall lower than what can be obtained from fresh or frozen elderberry, black raspberry, or blackberry. Background The geographic and temporal distributions of bacterial and fungal populations are poorly understood within the same wine grape cultivar. In this work, we describe the microbial composition from ‘Pinot noir’ must with respect to vintage, growing region, climate, and must chemistry across the states of California and Oregon, USA. Materials and Methods We sampled ‘Pinot noir’ clone 667 clusters from 15 vineyards existing in a latitudinal gradient spanning nearly 1,200 km in California and Oregon for two vintages (2016 and 2017). Regions included five American Viticultural Areas (AVA). In order from southern California to Oregon, these AVAs were Santa Barbara, Monterey, Sonoma, Mendocino, and Willamette Valley. Uninoculated grape musts were subjected to 16S rRNA gene and ITS-1 amplicon sequencing to assess composition of microbial communities. We also measured grape maturity metrics. Finally, to describe regions by precipitation and growing degree days, we queried the Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model (PRISM) spatial climate dataset. Results Most of the dominant bacterial taxa in must samples were in the family Enterobacteriaceae, notably the lactic acid bacteria or the acetic acid bacteria groups, but some, like the betaproteobacterial genus Massilia, belonged to groups not commonly found in grape musts. Fungal communities were dominated by Hanseniaspora uvarum (Saccharomycetaceae). We detected relationships between covariates (e.g., vintage, precipitation during the growing season, pH, titratable acidity, and total soluble solids) and bacterial genera Gluconobacter and Tatumella in the family Enterobacteraceae, Sphingomonas (Sphingomonodaceae), Lactobacillus (Lactobacillaceae), and Massilia (Oxalobacteraceae), as well as fungal genera in Hanseniaspora, Kazachstania, Lachancea, Torulaspora in the family Saccharomycetaceae, as well as Alternaria (Pleosporaceae), Erysiphe (Erysiphaceae), and Udeniomyces (Cystofilobasidiaceae). Fungal community distances were significantly correlated with geographic distances, but this was not observed for bacterial communities. Climate varied across regions and vintages, with growing season precipitation ranging from 11 mm to 285 mm and growing degree days ranging from 1,245 to 1,846. Discussion We determined that (1) bacterial beta diversity is structured by growing season precipitation, (2) fungal beta diversity reflects growing season precipitation and growing degree days, and (3) microbial differential abundances of specific genera vary with vintage, growing season precipitation, and fruit maturity metrics. Further, the correlation between fungal community dissimilarities and geographic distance suggests dispersal limitation and the vineyard as a source for abundant fungal taxa. Contrasting this observation, the lack of correlation between bacterial community dissimilarity and geographic distance suggests that environmental filtering is shaping these communities.

Background: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) share pathogenic mechanisms, and their lead-lag relationship remains unclear. We performed a meta-analysis of data from longitudinal studies to evaluate the interactive association between age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods: A literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library up to Feb 2019. Estimates were pooled by study quality and type of AMD and CVD. Publication bias was assessed by Begg’s test. Results: We identified nine studies for the risk of AMD in CVD and ten studies for the risk of CVD in AMD. Overall, evidence for the risk of CVD in AMD patients was most robust. Both early and late AMD preceded CVD, but more solid significance existed in late AMD. Among the types of CVD, stroke was more tightly associated with AMD than coronary heart disease. Publication bias was not significant in either direction. Conclusion: AMD is a risk factor for CVD, which is primarily driven by the increased risk of stroke in patients with late AMD. Moreover, these results suggested that AMD treatment and screening for CVD in AMD patients may have unexplored clinical benefits.

Of various rodent-borne hantaviruses, Seoul orthohantavirus (SEOV) causes haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), as does Hantaan orthohantavirus (HTNV). Given global-scale of cases of human infection with SEOV, it is of great clinical importance to distinguish SEOV from other HFRS-causing hantaviruses. In May 2019, a middle-aged patient who had lived in a suburban area of Chungcheong Province, Republic of Korea and enjoyed outdoor activities was transferred to Asan Medical Center in Seoul, Republic of Korea with HFRS; his symptoms included high fever and generalized myalgia. The rapid diagnostic test performed immediately after his transfer detected HTNV-specific antibodies, and the patient was treated accordingly. However, two consecutive IFAs performed at ten-day intervals showed no HTNV-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) G. During continuous supportive care, next-generation sequencing successfully identified viral genomic sequences in the patient's serum, which were SEOV and not HTNV. Phylogenetic analysis grouped the L, M, and S genes of this SEOV strain together with those of rat- or human-isolated Korean strains reported previously. Given global outbreaks and public health threats of zoonotic hantaviruses, a causative pathogen of hantavirus HFRS should be identified correctly at the time of diagnosis and by point-of-care testing.

ObjectivesTo investigate significant intraocular pressure (IOP) levels associated with the risk of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) in the treatment-naïve Korean population.MethodsParticipants ≥20 years of age in Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010-2011 were divided into two groups, those with higher and lower IOP values, compared with the reference IOP value. We compared the risk of OAG in each group using regression analyses. The IOP value that yielded the highest statistical significance was determined as an IOP significantly associated with the OAG risk.ResultsA total of 7,650 participants (7,292 control, 358 OAG) were included. The mean IOP was significantly higher in OAG group (14.4 ± 2.9 mmHg), compared to control group (13.9 ± 2.7 mmHg, P = 0.022). In association with an increased risk of OAG, the significant IOP value was 18 mmHg (Odds ratio [OR] = 1.79, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.14-2.80, P = 0.011). Additionally, sex-difference was identified and they were 19 mmHg (OR = 2.79, 95% CI 1.27-6.16, P = 0.011) in men and 18 mmHg (OR = 2.65, 95% CI 1.32-5.33, P = 0.006) in women. The IOP values associated with significantly decreased risk of glaucoma were determined to be 14 mmHg in men (OR = 0.68, 95% CI 0.47-0.99, P = 0.042) and 16 mmHg in women (OR = 0.47, 95% CI 0.27-0.81, P = 0.007).ConclusionsIn consideration of the risk to benefit ratio, the reference IOP level for screening or setting the target IOP for treatment could be considered different from traditional 21 mmHg in Korean population.

This study examines the significance of emotion in the lives of culturally and linguistically diverse students within the ESL classroom. In the classroom 'underlife', students not only replicate the ideologies of the official world, but also cultivate shared cultural practices in response to the world around them. The study's findings shed light on the pivotal role that emotion plays in the formation of unique child cultures at the margin of classroom life. These child cultures in classroom underlife were where culturally and linguistically diverse students disrupt ESL labels that might position them as deficient to build their own cultural understanding, foster intimate relationships, and enhance their classroom experiences.

Personalized educational interventions have been shown to facilitate successful and inclusive statistics, mathematics, and data science (SMDS) in higher education through timely and targeted reduction of heterogeneous training disparities caused by years of cumulative, structural challenges in contemporary educational systems. However, the burden on the institutions and instructors to provide personalized training resources to large groups of students is also formidable, and often unsustainable. We present Individualized Pathways and Resources to Adaptive Control Theory-Inspired Scientific Education (iPRACTISE), a free, publicly available web app that serves as a tool to facilitate personalized trainings on SMDS and related topics through provision of personalized training recommendations as informed by computerized assessments and individuals' training preferences. We describe the resources available in iPRACTISE, and some proof-of-concept evaluation results from deploying iPRACTISE to supplement in-person and online classroom teaching in real-life settings. Strengths, practical difficulties, and potentials for future applications of iPRACTISE to crowdsource and sustain personalized SMDS education are discussed.

Abstract Brain cytoplasmic 200 RNA (BC200 RNA), a neuron-specific non-coding RNA, is also highly expressed in a number of tumors of non-neuronal origin. However, the biosynthesis of BC200 RNA remains poorly understood. In this study, we show that the efficient transcription of BC200 RNA requires both internal and upstream promoter elements in cancer cells. The transcription complex seems to interact with a broad range of sequences within the upstream 100-bp region. The cellular levels and half-lives of BC200 RNA were found to differ across various cancer cell types, but there was no significant correlation between these parameters. Exogenously expressed BC200 RNA had a shorter half-life than that observed for the endogenous version in cancer cells, suggesting that BC200 RNA might be protected by some limiting factor(s) in cancer cells. Transient transfection experiments showed that the transcriptional activity of the exogenous BC200 RNA promoter element varied depending on the cancer cell type. However, the promoter activities together with the half-life data could not explain the differences in the levels of BC200 RNA among different cell types, suggesting that there is another level of transcriptional regulation beyond that detected by our transient transfection experiments.
