Abstract Background Waiting time for emergency abdominal surgery have been known to be linked to mortality. However, there is no clear consensus on the appropriated timing of surgery for gastrointestinal perforation. We investigated association between wait time and surgical outcomes in emergency abdominal surgery. Methods This single-center retrospective cohort study evaluated adult patients who underwent emergency surgery for gastrointestinal perforations between January 2003 and September 2021. Risk-adjusted restricted cubic splines modeled the probability of each mortality according to wait time. The inflection point when mortality began to increase was used to define early and late surgery. Outcomes among propensity-score matched early and late surgical patients were compared using percent absolute risk differences (RDs, with 95% CIs). Results Mortality rates began to rise after 16 h of waiting. However, early and late surgery groups showed no significant differences in 30-day mortality (11.4% vs. 5.7%), ICU stay duration (4.3 ± 7.5 vs. 4.3 ± 5.2 days), or total hospital stay (17.4 ± 17.0 vs. 24.7 ± 23.4 days). Notably, patients waiting over 16 h had a significantly higher ICU readmission rate (8.6% vs. 31.4%). The APACHE II score was a significant predictor of 30-day mortality. Conclusions Although we were unable to reveal significant differences in mortality in the subgroup analysis, we were able to find an inflection point of 16 h through the RCS curve technique. Trial registration Formal consent was waived due to the retrospective nature of the study, and ethical approval was obtained from the institutional research committee of our institution (B-2110–714-107) on 6 October 2021.

Abstract Linear gratings polarizers provide remarkable potential to customize the polarization properties and tailor device functionality via dimensional tuning of configurations. Here, we extensively investigate the polarization properties of single- and double-layer linear grating, mainly focusing on self-aligned bilayer linear grating (SABLG), serving as a wire grid polarizer in the mid-wavelength infrared (MWIR) region. Computational analyses revealed the polarization properties of SABLG, highlighting enhancement in TM transmission and reduction in TE transmission compared to single-layer linear gratings (SLG) due to optical cavity effects. As a result, the extinction ratio is enhanced by approximately 2724-fold in wavelength 3–6 μm. Furthermore, integrating the specially designed SABLG with an MWIR InAs/GaSb Type-II Superlattice (T2SL) photodetector yields a significantly enhanced spectral responsivity. The TM-spectral responsivity of SABLG is enhanced by around twofold than the bare device. The simulation methodology and analytical analysis presented herein provide a versatile route for designing optimized polarimetric structures integrated into infrared imaging devices, offering superior capabilities to resolve linear polarization signatures.

This research was conducted to improve the vegetation survey method using hyperspectral imaging and LiDAR techniques. Using Ocean FX, spectral data of seven representative species of Mount Hambaek were acquired, and hyperspectral image data of Mount Hambaek were acquired using AisaFENIX 1K and microCASI-1920 sensors. For spectral data and hyperspectral image data, tree species data were extracted using the Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) technique, and data such as tree species location, height, and diameter at breast height were extracted through LiDAR data. the results of an investigation A total of 39,351 trees were surveyed in the Mount Hambuk area, with 25,930 trees (65.9%) in Quercus mongolica, followed by Larix kaempferi with 6,805 trees (17.3%), Alnus sibirica with 3,625 trees (9.2%), Pinus dendiflora 1,764 trees (4.5%), Pinus koraiensis 605 trees (1.5%), Pinus rigida 405 trees (1.0%), and Betulaermanii 217 trees (0.5%), As a result of selecting 28 representative colonies to be surveyed and conducting on-site verification, 27 out of 28 colonies were found to be 96.43% accurate.

The average temperature of the Korean Peninsula over the past 30 years has risen 1.4°C compared to the early 20th century (1912-1941), exceeding the global temperature increase trend. Vegetation responds very sensitively to climate change. Changes in phenological response, such as fall fliage, fruiting time of vascular plants, and appearance of insects, have occurred. Areas around Wando Arboretum, the target area of this study, belongs to the subtropical climate zone. In this study, we aimed to provide basic data for systematic management of biological resources through out the survey of vegetation distribution in the area around Wando Arboretum where warm-temperate plants distribute, using hyperspectral imaging-LiDAR. As a result of converting the classification images of individual information using hyperspectral images and Lidar into objects by vegetation correlation, a total of 27 classifications were confirmed with 18 families, 24 species, and three varieties. In addition, a total of 29,884 individuals were identified.

Natural purification of pollutants is highly recognized as regulating ecosystem services; however, the purification capacity of tidal flats remains largely unknown and/or unquantified. A 60-day mesocosm transplant experiment was conducted in situ to assess the purification capacity of natural tidal flats. We adopted the advanced sediment quality triad approach, monitoring 10 endpoints, including chemical reduction, toxicity changes, and community recoveries. The results indicated that contaminated sediments rapidly recovered over time, particularly > 50% within a day, then slowly recovered up to ∼ 70% in a given period (60 days). A significant early reduction of parent pollutants was evidenced across all treatments, primarily due to active bacterial decomposition. Notably, the presence of benthic fauna and vegetated halophytes in the treatments significantly enhanced the purification of pollutants in both efficacy and efficiency. A forecast linear modeling further suggested additive effects of biota on the natural purification of tidal flats, reducing a full recovery time from 500 to 300 days. Overall, the triad approach with machine learning practices successfully demonstrated quantitative insight into the integrated assessment of natural purification.

Abstract Strong interactions between defect spins in many-body solid-state quantum systems are a crucial resource for exploring non-classical states. However, they face the key challenge of controlling interactions between the defect spins, since they are spatially fixed inside the host lattice. In this work, we present a dressed state approach to control the effective dipolar coupling between solid-state spins and demonstrate this scheme experimentally using two strongly-coupled nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. Through Ramsey spectroscopy on the sensor spin, we detect the change of the effective dipolar field generated by the control spin prepared in different dressed states. To observe the change of interaction dynamics, we deploy spin-lock-based polarization transfer measurements between the two NV spins in different dressed states. This scheme allows us to control the distribution of interaction strengths in strongly interacting spin systems, which can be a valuable tool for generating multi-spin correlated states for quantum-enhanced sensing.

Abstract Chern numbers characterize topological phases in a wide array of physical systems. However, the resilience of system topology to external perturbations makes it challenging experimentally to investigate transitions between different phases. In this study, we demonstrate the transitions of a Chern number from 0 to 3, synthesized in an electronic-nuclear spin system associated with the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond. The Chern number is characterized by the number of degeneracies enclosed in a control Hamiltonian parameter sphere. Topological transitions between different phases are realized by varying the radius and offset of the sphere such that the Chern number changes. We show that the measured topological phase diagram is consistent with numerical calculations and can also be mapped onto an interacting three-qubit system. The NV system may also allow access to even higher Chern numbers, which could be applied to exploring exotic topology or topological quantum information.

The man-made sea dike has disrupted the natural link between riverine and marine ecosystems and caused eutrophication within the aquatic ecosystem. The eutrophic water discharge has also raised concerns. As a representative tidal flat with the longest dike in the world, Saemangeum has experienced the problem of eutrophication. To elucidate the discharge water effects on the benthic food web dynamics, a four-year round sampling was conducted in/outside of the Saemangeum sea dike. Stable isotope analysis was applied to benthos (a total of 54 species) and their potential diets. Water discharge tripled in period II (2021–2022) compared to the period I (2019–2020). However, there were no significant impact changes in food web structure between the two periods due to improved lake water quality in period II. A positive correlation of nutrient concentration between the inner and outer areas of the dike revealed a direct effect of the water discharge on the outer tidal flat. The water discharge altered the spatial environmental conditions and the food web structure of the outer tidal flat. High TN concentrations stimulated the biomass of microphytobenthos (MPB) near the water gates, which in turn increased MPB consumption by benthos, demonstrating the in/direct impacts of water discharge on the food web. Furthermore, filter feeders exhibited a more sensitive response to spatial organic matter distribution compared to deposit feeders in diet utilization. Overall, our novel findings on food web dynamics in a representative tidal flat with artificial structures emphasize the necessity of continuous monitoring to ensure the sustainability of coastal ecosystems.

The integration and management of various national ecological assessments are essential for the benefit of the public. In the Republic of Korea, the Ecological and Natural Map (ENM) serves as a comprehensive platform that synthesizes the results of national ecosystem surveys into a unified system interface. To provide the current status and characteristics of our policy, we analyzed the ENMs and related appeals from 2014 to 2022. Following their implementation, the ENM Guidelines underwent nine revisions, with most of the revisions pertaining to appeals. Nine public announcements were made regarding the ENM, resulting in a gradual expansion of the conservation area. The data also showed a consistent increasing trend in appeals. Most of the 1st-grade areas in the ENM regions where appeals were filed have significantly decreased. The larger area or the smaller population density of an administrative distinct, the more appeals were filed. Our study presents information regarding the current status of the ENM system. The analysis of the operational direction and indicator trends across the 16-year period since the establishment of the system provides valuable insights for similar systems.

Blockchain technology is attracting attention for its high usability in various fields such as IoT and healthcare, and it is being used as an alternative to distributed databases. Despite their high usability, the techniques for efficiently indexing blockchain-based geospatial point data have not been studied much until now. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical quadrant spatial LSM tree(i.e., HQ-sLSM tree) which effectively indexes large amounts of geospatial point data from the blockchain by reflecting its write-intensive feature. The geospatial point data is linearized using Geohash before being inserted into our proposed HQ-sLSM tree. Furthermore, we present the concept of a spatial filter which enables low disk I/O generating algorithms to process range and $k$ NN queries over the HQ-sLSM tree. Experiments confirmed that the HQ-sLSM tree performed exceptionally well for the insertion of point data, and the performance of range and $k$ NN query processing resulted second to the best after the R-tree.

Homomorphic encryption (HE) is one of the representative solutions to privacy-preserving machine learning (PPML) classification enabling the server to classify private data of clients while guaranteeing privacy. This work focuses on PPML using word-wise fully homomorphic encryption (FHE). In order to implement deep learning on word-wise HE, the ReLU and max-pooling functions should be approximated by polynomials for homomorphic operations. Most of the previous studies focus on HE-friendly networks, which approximate the ReLU and max-pooling functions using low-degree polynomials. However, this approximation cannot support deeper neural networks due to large approximation errors in general and can classify only relatively small datasets. Thus, we propose a precise polynomial approximation technique, a composition of minimax approximate polynomials of low degrees for the ReLU and max-pooling functions. If we replace the ReLU and max-pooling functions with the proposed approximate polynomials, standard deep learning models such as ResNet and VGGNet can still be used without further modification for PPML on FHE. Even pre-trained parameters can be used without retraining, which makes the proposed method more practical. We approximate the ReLU and max-pooling functions in the ResNet-152 using the composition of minimax approximate polynomials of degrees 15, 27, and 29. Then, we succeed in classifying the plaintext ImageNet dataset with 77.52% accuracy, which is very close to the original model accuracy of 78.31%. Also, we obtain an accuracy of 87.90% for classifying the encrypted CIFAR-10 dataset in the ResNet-20 without any additional training.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has made significant impacts on global public health, including the development of several skin diseases that have arisen primarily as a result of the pandemic. Owing to the widespread expansion of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), the development of effective treatments for these skin diseases is drawing attention as an important social issue. For many centuries, ginseng and its major active ingredients, ginsenosides and saponins, have been widely regarded as herbal medicines. Further, the anti-viral action of ginseng suggests its potential effectiveness as a therapeutic agent against COVID-19. Thus, the aim of this review was to examine the association of skin lesions with COVID-19 and the effect of ginseng as a therapeutic agent to treat skin diseases induced by COVID-19 infection. We classified COVID-19-related skin disorders into three categories: caused by inflammatory, immune, and complex (both inflammatory and immune) responses and evaluated the evidence for ginseng as a treatment for each category. This review offers comprehensive evidence on the improvement of skin disorders induced by SARS-CoV-2 infection using ginseng and its active constituents.

Historical trends of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contamination were reconstructed from eleven sediment cores located in intertidal zones of the Yellow and Bohai seas for a period encompassing the last 80 years. The analysis encompassed 15 traditional PAHs (t-PAHs), 9 emerging PAHs (e-PAHs), and 30 halogenated PAHs (Hl-PAHs), including 10 chlorinated PAHs (Cl-PAHs) and 20 brominated PAHs (Br-PAHs). Concentrations of target PAHs were highest in industrial and municipal areas situated along the coast of the Bohai Sea, including Huludao, Yingkou, Tianjin, and Dandong, constituting a substantial mass inventory. All target PAHs showed increasing trends since the 1950s, reflecting the development history of South Korea and China. High molecular weight PAHs accumulated in sampling sites more than low molecular weight PAHs. A positive matrix factorization model showed that the PAH sources were coal and gasoline combustion (35%), diesel combustion (33%), and biomass combustion (32%). Over the last 80 years, the contribution of coal and gasoline combustion increased in all regions, while diesel combustion and biomass combustion varied across regions and over time. Toxicity equivalence values were highest for t-PAHs (>99% contribution), followed by Cl-PAHs, Br-PAHs, and e-PAHs. Concentrations of t-PAHs in Eastern Asia seas have increased since the 1900s, particularly in intertidal areas compared to subtidal areas. The intertidal zone removed 83% of the total flux of PAHs originating from land and thus appears to serve as a buffer zone against marine pollution. Overall, this study provides novel knowledge on the historical trends and sources of PAHs on a large scale, along with insights for future coastal management.

Cholesterol is a rigid, crystalline, non-polar natural substance that exists in animal blood and cell membranes. Some of its derivatives are known to form ordered liquid crystalline mesophases under suitable conditions. In this work, we carefully examined the influence of cholesterol substitution on the characteristics of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT-MA-cholesterol) and its corresponding polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT-MA-cholesterol) synthesized by both chemical and electrochemical polymerization. We found evidence for an ordered lamellar (smectic-like) structure in the EDOT-MA-cholesterol monomer by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and X-ray diffraction techniques. The ordered phase was observed to form on cooling from the isotropic melt at about 80 °C. Due to the insulating and bulky cholesterol side group on the EDOT monomer, we found that there was a maximum charge density for electrodeposition at ∼ 0.155 C.cm−2. A series of electrodepositions were performed from 0 to 0.155 C.cm−2 for probing the change of the charge transport with more charges used for the electrodeposition. We found that the impedance increased in the high-frequency range (above 104 Hz) and decreased in the low-frequency range (below 102 Hz). Three equivalent circuit models were proposed for fitting impedance data at different charge densities for a better understanding of the film growth process. The suppressed cyclic voltammogram (CV) of PEDOT-MA-cholesterol showed that the charge storage capability was essentially eliminated in the thickest films. The limited doping of the films was corroborated by their diminished electrochromic behavior, polaron-dominating absorption in UV-vis, overoxidized S 2p X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) signal of electrodeposited films, and proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR) of chemically polymerized samples. Dense film morphologies were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Grazing incident X-ray diffraction (GIWAXS) indicated the disrupted stacking of conjugated chains, which correlated with the decreased conductivity of the PEDOT-MA-cholesterol films. The measurement of the electrical conductivity gave a value of around 3.30 × 10−6 S.cm−1 which is about six orders of magnitude lower than has been seen in PEDOT (∼3 S.cm-1).

Solar salterns were placed along the coast and were frequently left unattended after use. While many studies have isolated and identified microorganisms from hypersaline environments, their role and adaptation mechanisms are still unclear. Herein, we elucidated the role of halophiles in salt-polluted areas through the recently reported Halomonas getboli YJPS3-2 from the abandoned saltern. We analyzed the expression levels of genes in the YJPS3-2 strain to identify its adaptation mechanisms to high salinity environments, by representing the process from tidal flats to abandoned salterns with varying salinity gradients. The YJPS3-2 strain primarily overexpresses genes associated with ABC transport to adapt to hypersaline environments. Interestingly, the cheA gene, which recognizes changes in the surrounding, was the most upregulated, and it was also associated with the overexpression of the MS ring and T3SS mechanisms relating to the flagellar activity. The YJPS3-2 recognized the high salt concentration in its surroundings and attempted to accumulate compatible solutes that could withstand high osmotic pressure inside the cell to adapt to the high salinity environment. Furthermore, during this process, the YJPS3-2 strain removed surrounding pollutants and secreted secondary metabolites that could be utilized by neighboring organisms. Our results suggested that this halophilic bacterium has the potential to serve as a pioneering species for thriving the surrounding while adapting to saline environments.

Satellites have been developed and operated for various purposes. The global satellite market is growing rapidly as the number of satellites and their mission diversity increase. Satellites revolve around the Earth to perform missions and communicate with ground stations repeatedly and sequentially. However, because satellites are orbiting the Earth, there is a limited time window for missions to a specific area and communication with ground stations. Thus, in an environment where multiple satellites and multiple ground stations (MS-MGs) are operated, scheduling missions and communications to maximize the utilization of satellites is a complex problem. For the MS-MG scheduling problem, this study proposes a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to assign time windows for missions and communications with ground stations to individual satellites. The MILP model is based on the concept of a time-space network and includes constraints reflecting on the space mission environment of satellites. The objective function and constraints of the MILP model were validated through numerical experiments based on actual data from Korean satellites.

Abstract Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have been developed into essential hardware units for a wide range of solid-state-based quantum technology applications. While such applications require the long spin lifetimes of the NV centers, they are often limited due to decoherence. In this study, we theoretically investigate the decoherence of NV-spin ensembles induced by nitrogen impurities (P1 centers), which are one of the most dominant and inevitable magnetic field noise sources in diamond. We combined cluster correlation expansion and density functional theory to compute the Hahn-echo spin-coherence time of the NV centers for a broad range of P1 concentrations. Results indicate a clear linear dependence of T2 on P1 concentrations on a log scale with a slope of −1.06, which is in excellent agreement with previous experimental results. The interplay between the Jahn–Teller effect and the hyperfine interaction in the P1 center plays a critical role in determining the bath dynamics and the resulting NV decoherence. Our results provide a theoretical upper bound for the NV-spin T2 over a wide range of P1 densities, serving as a key reference for materials optimization and spin bath characterization to develop highly coherent NV-based devices for quantum information technology.

Microalgal toxicants in sediments from an industrialized area (Ulsan Bay) in South Korea were identified using effect-directed analysis (EDA) with full-scan screening analysis (FSA) and microalgal bioassays with multiple endpoints. The growth rate and cell viability of three microalgae (Isochrysis galbana, Dunaliella tertiolecta, and Phaeodactylum tricornutum) were strongly inhibited following exposure to raw organic extracts of sediments from Site D5 (Woehang River). The polar fraction separated using a silica gel column significantly inhibited growth rate, esterase activity, cell membrane intensity, and chlorophyll a autofluorescence. In comparison, non- and mid-polar fractions induced non-toxic or esterase inhibition. Target toxicants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, styrene oligomers, and alkylphenols, were detected at low concentrations (450, 79, and 98 ng g−1 dw, respectively) in the sediment of D5, indicating the presence of unmonitored toxicants. FSA was performed for the polar fraction using LC-QTOFMS, and 31 candidates of toxicants were selected. Toxicological confirmation was conducted for 7 candidates for which standards are available. Out of these, 2-nitrophenol, 3-nitrophenol, and 4-nitrophenol showed significant microalgal toxicity; however, these compounds did not fully explain the induced toxicity. Overall, combining EDA and FSA with multiple endpoint bioassays demonstrated the benefits of characterizing the microalgal toxicants in the environments.

Microalgal bioassays are widely applied to evaluate the potential toxicity of various persistent toxic substances in environmental samples due to multiple advantages, including high sensitivity, short test duration, and cost-effectiveness. Microalgal bioassay is gradually developing in method, and the scope of application to environmental samples is also expanding. Here, we reviewed the published literature on microalgal bioassays for environmental assessments, focusing on types of samples, sample preparation methods, and endpoints, and highlighted key scientific advancements. Bibliographic analysis was performed with the keywords ‘microalgae’ and ‘toxicity’ or ‘bioassay’, and ‘microalgal toxicity’; 89 research articles were selected and reviewed. Traditionally, most studies implementing microalgal bioassays focused on water samples (44%) with passive samplers (38%). Studies using the direct exposure method (41%) of injecting microalgae into sampled water mainly evaluated toxic effects by growth inhibition (63%). Recently, various automated sampling techniques, in situ bioanalytical methods with multiple endpoints, and targeted and non-targeted chemical analyses have been applied. More research is needed to identify causative toxicants affecting microalgae and to quantify the cause-effect relationships. This study provides the first comprehensive overview of recent advances in microalgal bioassays performed with environmental samples, suggesting future research directions based on current understanding and limitations.

Abstract Background Despite the dramatic increase in the use of medical imaging in various therapeutic fields of clinical trials, the first step of image quality check (image QC), which aims to check whether images are uploaded appropriately according to the predefined rules, is still performed manually by image analysts, which requires a lot of manpower and time. Methods In this retrospective study, 1669 computed tomography (CT) images with five specific anatomical locations were collected from Asan Medical Center and Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital. To generate the ground truth, two radiologists reviewed the anatomical locations and presence of contrast enhancement using the collected data. The individual deep learning model is developed through InceptionResNetv2 and transfer learning, and we propose Image Quality Check-Net (Image QC-Net), an ensemble AI model that utilizes it. To evaluate their clinical effectiveness, the overall accuracy and time spent on image quality check of a conventional model and ImageQC-net were compared. Results ImageQC-net body part classification showed excellent performance in both internal (precision, 100%; recall, 100% accuracy, 100%) and external verification sets (precision, 99.8%; recovery rate, 99.8%, accuracy, 99.8%). In addition, contrast enhancement classification performance achieved 100% precision, recall, and accuracy in the internal verification set and achieved (precision, 100%; recall, 100%; accuracy 100%) in the external dataset. The efficiency of hyper- and multispectral imaging (HSI and MSI) has gained considerable attention in research on plant phenotyping. This is due to their ease of use while being considered a nondestructive technology. Unlike current point-scanned spectroscopy, both HSI and MSI extract spatial and spectral information while covering a wide range of a plant body. Moreover, it is necessary to equip the extracted information with multivariate calibration techniques, followed by model evaluation. To date, the application of HSI and MSI for monitoring plant growth under a controlled environment is emerging and showing a good trend. Our systematic literature review discusses spectroscopy imaging techniques and their chemometric approaches as a sustainable sensor technology to detect plant traits. In conclusion, we also explore the possibility of carrying out HSI and MSI during plant trait analysis.

Fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) is a prospective tool for privacy-preserving machine learning (PPML). Several PPML models have been proposed based on various FHE schemes and approaches. Although FHE schemes are suitable as tools for implementing PPML models, previous PPML models based on FHE, such as CryptoNet, SEALion, and CryptoDL, are limited to simple and nonstandard types of machine learning models; they have not proven to be efficient and accurate with more practical and advanced datasets. Previous PPML schemes replaced non-arithmetic activation functions with simple arithmetic functions instead of adopting approximation methods and did not use bootstrapping, which enables continuous homomorphic evaluations. Thus, they could neither use standard activation functions nor employ large numbers of layers. In this work, we first implement the standard ResNet-20 model with the RNS-CKKS FHE with bootstrapping and verify the implemented model with the CIFAR-10 dataset and plaintext model parameters. Instead of replacing the non-arithmetic functions with simple arithmetic functions, we use state-of-the-art approximation methods to evaluate these non-arithmetic functions, such as ReLU and Softmax, with sufficient precision. Further, for the first time, we use the bootstrapping technique of the RNS-CKKS scheme in the proposed model, which enables us to evaluate an arbitrary deep learning model on encrypted data. We numerically verify that the proposed model with the CIFAR-10 dataset shows 98.43% identical results to the original ResNet-20 model with non-encrypted data. The classification accuracy of the proposed model is 92.43%±2.65%, which is quite close to that of the original ResNet-20 CNN model (91.89%). It takes approximately 3 h for inference on a dual Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 CPU (112 cores) with 172 GB of memory. We believe that this opens the possibility of applying FHE to an advanced deep PPML model.

While water electrolysis offers a renewable means to obtain H2, it is necessary to understand the roles adopted by catalytic components. Here, authors explore a heterostructured MoSe2/perovskite oxide catalyst that shows multidirectional charge transfer to boost electrocatalytic water splitting.

Background: According to the previous studies, the work-related accident rate decreased in Korea after the introduction of occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS), but there were several disasters in Korea such as subway worker's death at Guui station in 2016 and the Taean thermal power plant accident in 2018, which escalated the social demand for safety. In 2018, OHSMS became an international standard, as ISO45001 was announced. Methods: A survey was conducted to research the implementation status of OHSMS and changes in people's perception, and the results were compared with those of a past survey. Results: Enhanced social demand and various stakeholders' (not only buyer) needs, and social responsibility are perceived as the motivation for the introduction of OHSMS rather than legal compliance or customer demand. In the questionnaire about problems with the implementation of OHSMS, the factors with higher response rate in 2018 than 2004 were “excessive cost” and “complicated documentation management.” In the questionnaire about how to promote OHSMS in organizations, most people answered “reduction of workers' compensation insurance rate” in 2004, but most people answered “exemption from health and safety supervision” in 2018. Conclusion: For the effective implementation of ISO45001, emphasis is placed on social demand, training to recognize health and safety as a part of management, and the reduction of certification and consulting costs to promote the introduction of OHSMS. Incentives such as insurance premium cuts and exemptions from health and safety supervision are needed.

Abstract Objectives This study evaluated the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) according to the number of metabolic syndrome (MetS) components. Methods Using health checkup and insurance claims data of 6,365,409 subjects, the occurrence of CRC according to stage of MetS by sex was determined from the date of the health checkup in 2009 until December 31, 2018. Results Cumulative incidence rates (CIR) of CRC in men and women was 3.9 and 2.8 per 1000 (p < 0.001), respectively. CIR of CRC for the normal, pre-MetS, and MetS groups in men was 2.6, 3.9, and 5.5 per 1000 (p < 0.001) and CIR in women was 2.1, 2.9, and 4.5 per 1000 (p < 0.001), respectively. Compared with the normal group, the hazard ratio (HR) of CRC for the pre-MetS group was 1.25 (95% CI 1.17–1.33) in men and 1.09 (95% CI 1.02–1.17) in women, and the HR of CRC for the MetS group was 1.54 (95% CI 1.43–1.65) in men and 1.39 (95% CI 1.26–1.53) in women after adjustment. Conclusions We found that MetS is a risk factor for CRC in this study. Therefore, the prevention and active management of MetS would contribute to the prevention of CRC.

When painters draw, they do not draw what they see; they reflect their emotions through specific forms of artistic expression. Through this empathy, humans derive aesthetic satisfaction. Psychological studies on art and emotions have been extensively conducted since the 20th century, and it has been found that artistic activities such as painting and writing have a positive effect on human emotions. However, it is difficult for a non-professional painter to express human emotions in a picture using artistic elements. The aim of this study was to propose a “user emotion-inspired painterly rendering process” to help non-professionals reflect their emotions through painting. To accomplish this aim, a painter-rendering system that automatically creates digital paintings with parameterized painting features was used. We analyzed the correlation between human emotions and the rendering parameters affecting the painting style through a user study, and we estimated the rendering parameter values for specific emotions. The results showed that colors and emotions were closely linked, and color scheme was an influential factor in the paintings. Furthermore, we developed a recoloring algorithm based on Kobayashi's three color systems classified as human emotions, and we created paintings that better reflect specific emotions. The proposed algorithm was validated through a user satisfaction survey. Hence, the proposed system can improve a user's understanding of painting and create paintings that reflect specific emotions.

Background and Objectives: A difficulty scoring system was previously developed to assess the difficulty of laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) for liver tumors; however, we need another system for hepatolithiasis. Therefore, we developed a novel difficulty scoring system (nDSS) and validated its use for predicting postoperative outcomes. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study. We used clinical data of 123 patients who underwent LLR for hepatolithiasis between 2003 and 2021. We analyzed the data to determine which indices were associated with operation time or estimated blood loss (EBL) to measure the surgical difficulty. We validated the nDSS in terms of its ability to predict postoperative outcomes, namely red blood cell (RBC) transfusion, postoperative hospital stay (POHS), and major complications defined as grade ≥IIIa according to the Clavien–Dindo classification (CDC). Results: The nDSS included five significant indices (range: 5–17; median: 8). The RBC transfusion rate (p < 0.001), POHS (p = 0.002), and major complication rate (p = 0.002) increased with increasing nDSS score. We compared the two groups of patients divided by the median nDSS (low: 5–7; high: 8–17). The operation time (210.7 vs. 240.7 min; p < 0.001), EBL (281.9 vs. 702.6 mL; p < 0.001), RBC transfusion rate (5.3% vs. 37.9%; p < 0.001), POHS (8.0 vs. 13.3 days; p = 0.001), and major complication rate (8.8% vs. 25.8%; p = 0.014) were greater in the high group. Conclusions: The nDSS can predict the surgical difficulty and outcomes of LLR for hepatolithiasis and may help select candidates for the procedure and surgical approach.

South Korea currently lacks a real-time monitoring and anomaly detection system for detecting continuous tap water quality changes from the water source to faucet and pre-diagnosing hazards that threaten tap water safety. In this study, we constructed an accurate water quality prediction model that could comprehensively cover all water treatment facilities supplying tap water nationwide and verified the model using an integrated approach. To address the uncertainty of continuously changing water quality, we collected five years (2017–2021) of hourly water quality data from 33 large water purification plants and applied various deep learning techniques to construct an optimal prediction model. We repeated water quality prediction and evaluation over the following 24 h through a time series cross-validation of an untrained dataset of the previous five months. The optimized deep learning model achieved average and maximum prediction accuracy of 98.78 and 99.98%, respectively, and showed excellent performance in terms of the root mean squared error (0.0006), mean absolute error (0.0003), and Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (0.9894). Thus, deep learning technology greatly improved the accuracy and efficiency of water quality prediction. The proposed model could provide prompt and accurate water quality information for large-scale water supply facilities nationwide and improve public health through the early diagnosis of water quality anomalies.

While catalysts are necessary for H2 and O2 production from water, developing materials capable of evolving both under the same conditions has proven challenging. Here, authors prepare perovskite-oxide and molybdenum sulfide heterostructures as bifunctional water-splitting electrocatalysts.

During the past few decades, contamination of sediments by persistent toxic substances (PTSs) has been observed in estuarine and coastal areas on the west coast of South Korea. The contaminants are suspected to cause toxicities in aquatic biota, but little is known about their ecological effects, particularly on benthic microbial communities. In this study, an eDNA-based assessment was applied along with classic assessments of exposure, such as chemistry and in vitro bioassays, to evaluate condition of benthic bacterial communities subjected to PTSs. Two strategies were adopted for the study. One was to conduct a comprehensive assessment in space (by comparing seawater and freshwater sites at five coastal regions) and in time (by following change over a 5-y period). Although we found that bacterial composition varied among and within years, some phyla, such as Proteobacteria (28.7%), Actinobacteria (13.1%), Firmicutes (12.7%), and Chloroflexi (12.5%) were consistently dominated across the study regions. Certain bacterial groups, such as Firmicutes and Verrucomicrobia have been linked to contamination at some sites in the study area and at specific points in time. Bacterial communities were not significantly correlated with salinity or AhR- and ER-mediated potencies, whereas concentrations of PAHs, APs, and certain metals (Cd and Hg) exhibited significant associations to the structure of bacterial communities at the phylum level. In fact, the relative abundance of microbes in the phylum Planctomycetes was significantly and negatively correlated with concentrations of PAHs and metals. Thus, the relative abundance of Planctomycetes could be used as an indicator of sedimentary contamination by PAHs and/or metals. Based on our correlation analyses, Cd and ER-mediated potencies were associated more with bacterial abundances at the class taxonomic level than were other PTSs and metals. Overall, the eDNA-based assessment was useful by augmenting more traditional measures of exposure and responses in a sediment triad approach and has potential as a more rapid screening tool. This study utilized effect-directed analysis (EDA) combined with full-scan screening analysis (FSA) to identify aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)-active compounds in sediments of inland creeks flowing into Lake Sihwa, South Korea. The specific objectives were to (i) investigate the major AhR-active fractions of organic extracts of sediments by using H4IIE-luc in vitro bioassay (4 h and 72 h exposures), (ii) quantify known AhR agonists, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and styrene oligomers (SOs), (iii) identify unknown AhR agonists by use of gas chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-QTOFMS), and (iv) determine contributions of AhR agonists to total potencies measured by use of the bioassay. FSA was conducted on fractions F2.6 and F2.7 (aromatics with log Kow 5–7) in extracts of sediment from Siheung Creek (industrial area). Those fractions exhibited significant AhR-mediated potency as well as relatively great concentrations of PAHs and SOs. FSA detected 461 and 449 compounds in F2.6 and F2.7, respectively. Of these, five tentative candidates of AhR agonist were selected based on NIST library matching, aromatic structures and numbers of rings, and available standards. Benz[b]anthracene, 11H-benzo[a]fluorene, and 4,5-methanochrysene exhibited significant AhR-mediated potency in the H4IIE-luc bioassay, and relative potencies of these compounds were determined. Potency balance analysis demonstrated that these three newly identified AhR agonists explained 1.1% to 67% of total induced AhR-mediated potencies of samples, which were particularly great for industrial sediments. Follow-up studies on sources and ecotoxicological effects of these compounds in coastal environments would be required. To improve the CO2/N2 separation performance, mixed-matrix carbon molecular sieve membranes (mixed-matrix CMSMs) were fabricated and tested. Two carbon-based fillers, graphene oxide (GO) and activated carbon (YP-50F), were separately incorporated into two polymer precursors (Matrimid® 5218 and ODPA-TMPDA), and the resulting CMSMs demonstrated improved CO2 permeability. The improvement afforded by YP-50F was more substantial due to its higher accessible surface area. Based on the gas permeation data and the Robeson plot for CO2/N2 separation, the performances of the CMSMs containing 15 wt % YP-50F and 15 wt % GO in the mixed polymer matrix surpassed the 2008 Robeson upper bound of polymeric membranes. Hence, this study demonstrates the feasibility of such membranes in improving the CO2/N2 separation performance through the appropriate choice of carbon-based filler materials in polymer matrices.

Background and objectives: Currently, few studies have been conducted on postoperative chylothorax, specifically in total thyroidectomy with modified radical neck dissection (MRND) in papillary thyroid carcinoma patients. This study provides the actual incidence, etiology, and clinical features of postoperative chylothorax and reports the clinical outcomes after treatment, which were dependent upon the severity of the complications. Materials and Methods: The medical charts of 111 papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) patients who underwent total thyroidectomy with modified radical neck dissection from January 2016 to December 2018 were reviewed retrospectively. The results were compared in three groups: the no chylothorax group, the subclinical (asymptomatic) group, and the clinical (symptomatic) group. Results: Chylothorax occurred in 23 patients (20.7%, 23/111). Nineteen (82.6%, 19/23) were subclinical chylothorax cases, which implies a small amount of chyle leakage with no respiratory symptoms. Four (17.4%, 4/23) were clinical, meaning they had either respiratory symptoms, such as dyspnea, desaturation, or a large amount of chylothorax in the images. The incidence was significantly higher in patients who underwent left modified radical neck dissection, and this corresponds to the side in which chylothorax occurred. There were also statistical differences in the drainage color, peak amount, or drain removal time. Conclusions: Postoperative chylothorax is a rare complication following neck dissection. However, it can be fatal if the condition progresses. Therefore, patients who undergo total thyroidectomy with modified radical neck dissection, especially on the left side, should be monitored for respiratory symptoms, and serial chest x-ray images obtained.

Nanocrystalline UiO-66 and its derivatives (containing -NH2, -Br, -(OH)2) were developed via pre-synthetic functionalization and incorporated into a polyimide membrane to develop a mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) for CO2/N2 separation. Incorporation of the non-functionalized UiO-66 nanocrystals into the polyimide membrane successfully improved CO2 permeability, with a slight decrease in CO2/N2 selectivity, owing to its large accessible surface area. The addition of other functional groups further improved the CO2/N2 selectivity of the polymeric membrane, with UiO-66-NH2, UiO-66-Br, and UiO-66-(OH)2 demonstrating improvements of 12%, 4%, and 17%, respectively. Further evaluation by solubility–diffusivity analysis revealed that the functionalized UiO-66 in MMMs can effectively increase CO2 diffusivity while suppressing N2 sorption, thus, resulting in improved CO2/N2 selectivity. Such results imply that the structural tuning of UiO-66 by the incorporation of various functional groups is an effective strategy to improve the CO2 separation performance of MMMs.
