Abstract The pyrochlore iridates have become ideal platforms to unravel fascinating correlated and topological phenomena that stem from the intricate interplay among strong spin-orbit coupling, electronic correlations, lattice with geometric frustration, and itinerancy of the 5d electrons. The all-in-all-out antiferromagnetic state, commonly considered as the magnetic ground state, can be dramatically altered in reduced dimensionality, leading to exotic or hidden quantum states inaccessible in bulk. Here, by means of magnetotransport, resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering experiments, we discover an emergent quantum disordered state in (111) Y2Ir2O7 thin films (thickness ≤30 nm) persisting down to 5 K, characterized by dispersionless magnetic excitations. The anomalous Hall effect observed below an onset temperature near 125 K corroborates the presence of chiral short-range spin configurations expressed in non-zero scalar spin chirality, breaking the macroscopic time-reversal symmetry. The origin of this chiral state is ascribed to the restoration of magnetic frustration on the pyrochlore lattice in lower dimensionality, where the competing exchange interactions together with enhanced quantum fluctuations suppress any long-range order and trigger spin-liquid-like behavior with degenerate ground-state manifold.

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) has played a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of spin-orbit physics in 5d transition metal materials. The progress in RIXS techniques has closely paralleled improvements in energy resolution, which have enabled the study of very low-lying excitations and led to the discovery of numerous new phenomena with significant scientific and technological implications. The multi-bend achromat (MBA) lattice upgrade of third-generation synchrotron sources, such as the Advanced Photon Source (APS), heralds a transformative era by introducing enhancements in brilliance and emittance. These advancements provide an opportunity to push the boundaries of RIXS techniques, meeting the challenges at the research frontiers of material science. This article aims to highlight key instrumental and technical advancements that enable the achievement of meV resolution in RIXS and discuss the impact of such high-resolution RIXS on exploring spin-orbit physics in 5d transition metal materials.

Abstract The magnitude and frequency of extreme precipitation events in the early twenty-first century have already proven to be increasing at a rate more quickly than previously anticipated. Currently, the biggest consequence of the change in extreme precipitation is the lack of a climate-adjusted national standard taking into account these recent increases that could be used to prevent life and property loss from catastrophic precipitation-driven floods. Here, we address how severe the change in extreme precipitation compares against the current national standard for precipitation climatology (NOAA Atlas 14) and how much of the population is affected by the underestimation of this risk in the contiguous United States (CONUS). As a result, extreme precipitation in the early twenty-first century has outpaced our current national standard in half of CONUS, and the heavy precipitation events experienced recently are quickly becoming a “new normal”, which will increase in severity and frequency in a continually changing climate. Over three-quarters of the U.S. population will likely experience this new normal occurrence of extreme precipitation. As much as one-third of the population is expected to experience the current definition of a 1-in-100-year storm as often as three times in their lifetime. Additionally, the current precipitation standards for designing transportation infrastructure and urban stormwater drainage systems that are built upon Atlas 14 may be insufficient to protect the public's safety and personal/community property from severe flooding. Areas where flood risk is mitigated by operating hydraulic and adaptation structures urgently need to assess the impact of the increased-hourly extreme precipitation and reevaluate their applicable operation rules. Understanding and predicting patterns and the likelihood of short-duration heavy precipitation would be beneficial in preparing for severe precipitation-driven disasters, such as flash floods and landslides, which would happen more frequently in a changing climate. Following the results of this analysis, accelerating the development and dissemination of the next generation of the national standard that has been climatically adjusted to adapt to the new normal is strongly recommended.

Abstract Background Gastric cancer (GC) is among the most common types of gastrointestinal cancers and has a high incidence and mortality around the world. To suppress the progression of GC, it is essential to develop diagnostic markers. MicroRNAs regulate GC development, but a clearer insight into their role is needed before they can be applied as a molecular markers and targets. Methods In this study, we assessed the diagnostic value of differentially expressed microRNAs as potential diagnostic biomarkers for GC using data for 389 tissue samples from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and 21 plasma samples from GC patients. Results The expression of hsa-miR-143-3p (also known as hsa-miR-143) was significantly downregulated in GC according to the TCGA data and plasma samples. The 228 potential target genes of hsa-miR-143-3p were analyzed using a bioinformatics tool for miRNA target prediction. The target genes correlated with extracellular matrix organization, the cytoplasm, and identical protein binding. Furthermore, the pathway enrichment analysis of target genes showed that they were involved in pathways in cancer, the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)–protein kinase B (Akt) signaling pathway, and proteoglycans in cancer. The hub genes in the protein–protein interaction (PPI) network, were matrix metallopeptidase 2 (MMP2), CD44 molecule (CD44), and SMAD family member 3 (SMAD3). Conclusions This study suggests that hsa-miR-143-3p may be used as a diagnostic marker for GC, contributing via the pathways involved in the development of GC.

An endstation for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS), dedicated to operations in the hard X-ray regime, has been constructed at the 1C beamline of Pohang Light Source II. At the Ir L3-edge, a total energy resolution of 34.2 meV was achieved, close to the theoretical estimation of 34.0 meV, which considers factors such as the incident energy bandpass, intrinsic analyzer resolution, geometrical broadening of the spectrometer, finite beam-size effect and Johann aberration. The performance of the RIXS instrument is demonstrated by measuring the RIXS spectra of Sr2IrO4. The endstation can be easily reconfigured to measure energy-integrated intensities with very low background for diffuse scattering and diffraction experiments.

Abstract Herein, a vertically inverted p–i–n architecture of light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) is designed for manufacturing feasibility and demonstrated scalable bilayer MoS2‐based LEDs. A 4 inch scale bilayer MoS2 is prepared by a two‐step growth method allocating the pre‐deposition of a few‐nm thick metal film and post‐sulfurization. To apply bilayer MoS2 for an active layer in LEDs, the film is transferred over ZnO nanoparticle layers, an electron transfer layer, and then the rest of the LED components are constructed by thermal deposition. This vertically inverted LED architecture allows individual organic or inorganic components to incorporate without degradation during the wet‐transfer process and transfer electron or hole carriers across separate layers, resulting in efficient radiative recombination in the MoS2 emitting layer. MoS2‐based LEDs exhibit electroluminescence of ≈5.41 cd m−2 throughout four active areas of 6.25 mm2 at a driving voltage of 7 V. Therefore, this achievement can overcome the drawbacks of existing transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs)‐based optoelectrical applications and extend its potential in various fields, such as flexible, ultrathin, or transparent displays.

Testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs) frequently affect adolescent and young adult males. Although TGCT is more responsive to cisplatin-based chemotherapy than other solid tumors, some patients are nonresponders, and following treatment, many patients continue to experience acute and long-term cytotoxic effects from cisplatin-based chemotherapy. Consequently, it is imperative to develop new therapeutic modalities for treatment-resistant TGCTs. Peptidyl-prolyl isomerase (Pin1) regulates the activity and stability of many cancer-associated target proteins. Prior findings suggest that Pin1 contributes to the pathogenesis of multiple human cancers. However, the specific function of Pin1 in TGCTs has not yet been elucidated. TGCT cell proliferation and viability were examined using cell cycle analysis and apoptosis assays following treatment with KPT6566, a potent, selective Pin1 inhibitor that covalently binds to the catalytic domain of Pin1. A xenograft mouse model was used to assess the effect of KPT6566 on tumor growth in vivo. KPT6566 effectively suppressed cell proliferation, colony formation, and ATP production in P19 and NCCIT cells. Further, KPT6566 induced apoptotic cell death by generating cellular reactive oxygen species and downregulating the embryonic transcription factors Oct-4 and Sox2. Finally, KPT6566 treatment significantly reduced tumor volume and mass in P19 cell xenografts. The Pin1 inhibitor KPT6566 has significant antiproliferative and antitumor effects in TGCT cells. These findings suggest that Pin1 inhibitors could be considered as a potential therapeutic approach for TGCTs.

Abstract Cryptococcus neoformans is an opportunistic human fungal pathogen causing lethal meningoencephalitis. It has several cell wall mannoproteins (MPs) identified as immunoreactive antigens. To investigate the structure and function of N-glycans assembled on cryptococcal cell wall MPs in host cell interactions, we purified MP98 (Cda2) and MP84 (Cda3) expressed in wild-type (WT) and N-glycosylation-defective alg3 mutant (alg3Δ) strains. HPLC and MALDI-TOF analysis of the MP proteins from the WT revealed protein-specific glycan structures with different extents of hypermannosylation and xylose/xylose phosphate addition. In alg3Δ, MP98 and MP84 had truncated core N-glycans, containing mostly five and seven mannoses (M5 and M7 forms), respectively. In vitro adhesion and uptake assays indicated that the altered core N-glycans did not affect adhesion affinities to host cells although the capacity to induce the immune response of bone-marrow derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) decreased. Intriguingly, the removal of all N-glycosylation sites on MP84 increased adhesion to host cells and enhanced the induction of cytokine secretion from BMDCs compared with that on MP84 carrying WT N-glycans. Therefore, the structure-dependent effects of N-glycans suggested their complex roles in modulating the interaction of MPs with host cells to avoid nonspecific adherence to host cells and host immune response hyperactivation.

Study region: The Conterminous United States Study focus: Extreme precipitation property defined by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Precipitation-Frequency Atlas of the United States (NOAA Atlas 14) is losing its representativeness as the standard measure due to the impacts of climate change. This study aims to spatially and quantitatively assess the changes in extreme precipitation properties by comparing the NOAA Atlas 14 with a new atlas of precipitation frequency estimates (PFE) developed in this study from early 21st-century records New hydrological insights for the region: The NOAA Atlas 14 has quantitatively diverged from the recent 20-year records due to precipitation non-stationarity across the United States. The NOAA Atlas 14 is characterized by more spatially smoothed PFEs compared to the new PFEs, suggesting that employing the NOAA Atlas 14 could lead to an underestimation of physical flood risk at a local scale. As the “new normal” in the 21st century, the majority of the United States faces three times more occurrences of extreme storms corresponding to a 1-in-100-year return period of the 20th century. The recent 20-year extreme events should be treated as the new normal. Until the NOAA Atlas 14 is updated to account for climate-driven non-stationarity and can be shown to resolve local effects better, it is recommended to employ new values between the upper and middle bounds of PFE that capture the non-stationarity of precipitation for the regions where the underestimation of PFEs is highlighted in this study

Objectives Real-time polymerase chain reaction is currently used as a confirmatory test for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The test results are interpreted as positive, negative, or inconclusive, and are used only for a qualitative classification of patients. However, the test results can be quantitated using threshold count (Ct) values to determine the amount of virus present in the sample. Therefore, this study investigated the diagnostic usefulness of Ct results through various quantitative analyzes, along with an analysis of clinical and epidemiological characteristics. Methods Clinical and epidemiological data from 4,642 COVID-19 patients in April 2021 were analyzed, including the Ct values of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), envelope (E), and nucleocapsid (N) genes. Clinical and epidemiological data (sex, age, underlying diseases, and early symptoms) were collected through a structured questionnaire. A correlation analysis was used to examine the relationships between variables. Results All 3 genes showed statistically significant relationships with symptoms and severity levels. The Ct values of the RdRp gene decreased as the severity of the patients increased. Moreover, statistical significance was observed for the presence of underlying diseases and dyspnea. Conclusion Ct values were found to be related to patients’ clinical and epidemiological characteristics. In particular, since these factors are closely related to symptoms and severity, Ct values can be used as primary data for predicting patients’ disease prognosis despite the limitations of this method. Conducting follow-up studies to validate this approach might enable using the data from this study to establish policies for preventing COVID-19 infection and spread.

Abstract Despite coronavirus disease 2019, cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of global death, requires timely detection and treatment for a high survival rate, underscoring the 24 h monitoring of vital signs. Therefore, telehealth using wearable devices with vital sign sensors is not only a fundamental response against the pandemic but a solution to provide prompt healthcare for the patients in remote sites. Former technologies which measured a couple of vital signs had features that disturbed practical applications to wearable devices, such as heavy power consumption. Here, we suggest an ultralow power (100 μW) sensor that collects all cardiopulmonary vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, and the respiration signal. The small and lightweight (2 g) sensor designed to be easily embedded in the flexible wristband generates an electromagnetically reactive near field to monitor the contraction and relaxation of the radial artery. The proposed ultralow power sensor measuring noninvasively continuous and accurate cardiopulmonary vital signs at once will be one of the most promising sensors for wearable devices to bring telehealth to our lives.

Study region: The Conterminous United States Study focus: The NOAA Atlases have provided the standard precipitation frequency estimates (PFEs) for over two decades in the United States, but they are losing that status due to climate change. This study evaluates the Atlases compared to new PFEs developed based on the Automated Surface Observing System and Regional Frequency Analysis (ASOS-RFA) as a benchmark and examines a radar-based precipitation product as a data source eligible for developing the post-Atlas. New hydrological insights for the region: The stationarity assumption of precipitation was highlighted as a significant factor in increasing the uncertainties in the Atlases. The Atlases explicitly tended to underestimate PFEs compared to the ASOS-RFA. The difference between the Atlases and the ASOS-RFA increases as the return period increases and the duration decreases. The age of the Atlases correlated with the difference, suggesting that recent observations diverge from older estimates. The radar-based PFEs are well-matched with the ASOS-RFA at frequent return periods, but the uncertainties increased as the return period increased. This is because the conventional bias correction was limited in improving the annual maximum series of precipitation. Lastly, we need to pay careful attention to an increase in precipitation frequency estimates shorter than 12-hr durations.

Abstract We investigate bottom-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (B-OLEDs) integrated with metasurface (MS) to analyze the effect of the structural parameters on the output performance. The performance of the MS-integrated B-OLED (MIB-OLED) is evaluated by out-coupling efficiency (OCE) and reflection of the ambient light, while attention is paid mainly to dielectric capping and metal structure of MS that may influence excitation of surface plasmon (SP). The results suggest that layer thicknesses affect the performance by as much as 10% for the OCE and up to 32% for reflectance. The OCE is in general weakly affected by the structural parameters of MS. In contrast, the reflectance characteristics are found to be dominated by localized SP that is largely determined by the length and the width of a unit slot of MS. An optimization factor introduced to evaluate the performance based on out-coupling power to the radiation mode and reflectance of MIB-OLEDs confirms that integration with MS improves performance by 16% over conventional planar structure. In particular, MIB-OLED is found to enhance OCE by 51% with Lambertian-like pattern. Enhanced performance is experimentally confirmed. The findings provide insights on how to optimize the MS structure to produce MIB-OLEDs with enhanced out-coupled power and contrast ratio.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterium that causes infections in different parts of the body and causes skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI). The present study examined the antimicrobial resistance patterns and molecular epidemiological characteristics of MRSA isolated from nasal swabs in clinical patients. SCCmec type of MRSA isolates from clinical patients were analyzed: 24 cases were SCCmec type-II; two cases were type-II/IVa; one case was type-II/V; one case was type-IVa; 11 cases were not-typeable. The mec complex type of MRSA isolates from clinical patients were analyzed: 29 cases were mec complex type A, and 10 cases were not-typeable, but type B was not found in the present study. In conclusion, SCCmec type-II and mec complex type A were the most dominant MRSA subtypes among the MRSA isolates from a nasal swab of patients, and the results were similar to other studies on hospital-acquired MRSA (HA-MRSA). These results can not only provide basic data for hospital infection management but also be a good guideline for MRSA infections in the Republic of Korea.

Conventional studies on digital hologram printer have mainly been conducted on image generation and reconstruction such as multi-view image generation method, computer-generated hologram (CGH) and a method of displaying a wave-front for a 3D object. However, There should be a criterion to evaluate the quality of the reconstructed image because hologram printer use photosensitive recording interference patterns in holographic material. For this reason, The evaluation method of the completed hologram using a digital hologram printer is focused on how well it came out without aberration or how high intensity of light has been reconstructed. However polarization has an effect on hologram regeneration efficiency because holography uses a laser that generates electromagnetic waves. Hologram recording method is usually to match linear polarization in the same direction. but digital hologram printer composed of complex optical components that causes a phase shifting due to a setup error. it will be a problem for resulting in unwanted polarization at the final recording plane. In this paper, we analyzed the possible polarization changes and analyze the optimal polarization matching status using values from hologram results and use them as a study to improve the efficiency of hologram result from holographic printer.

Pin1, a cis/trans isomerase of peptidyl-prolyl peptide bonds, plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of many human cancers. Although chemical inhibitors of Pin1 show potent antitumor therapeutic properties against various cancers, their effect on colorectal cancer, especially colorectal tumor-initiating cells, remains unknown. Here, we investigated the effect of Juglone and KPT6566 on Caco-2 cells and tumor-initiating Caco-2 cells. Juglone and KPT6566 inhibited cell growth and colony formation, and induced apoptosis of Caco-2 cells. We also found that Juglone and KPT6566 downregulated expression of G1-phase-specific cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinases in a time-dependent manner, consistent with suppression of Caco-2 cell proliferation and colony formation. Although tumor-initiating cells are thought to be responsible for resistance to traditional chemotherapeutic drugs, our experiments demonstrate that Juglone or KPT6566 kill both tumor-initiating and non-tumor-initiating Caco-2 cells with equal or similar efficacy. Finally, when CD44+CD133+ tumor-initiating Caco-2 cells were injected into NSG mice, Juglone or KPT6566 led to a meaningful reduction in tumor volume and mass compared with tumors isolated from mice that received control treatment. Overall, these results indicate that chemical Pin1 inhibitors may be a valuable therapeutic option against colorectal tumor-initiating cancer cells.

Multidrug resistance (MDR) is one of the major barriers in chemotherapy. It is often related to the overexpression of efflux receptors such as P-glycoprotein (P-gp). Overexpressed efflux receptors inhibit chemotherapeutic efficacy by pumping out intracellularly delivered anticancer drugs. In P-gp-mediated MDR-related pathways, PI3K/Akt and NF-kB pathways are commonly activated signaling pathways, but these pathways are downregulated by melittin, a main component of bee venom. In this study, a polymersome based on a poly (lactic acid) (PLA)-hyaluronic acid (HA) (20k-10k) di-block copolymer and encapsulating melittin and doxorubicin was developed to overcome anticancer resistance and enhance chemotherapeutic efficacy. Through the simultaneous delivery of doxorubicin and melittin, PI3K/Akt and NF-κB pathways could be effectively inhibited, thereby downregulating P-gp and successfully enhancing chemotherapeutic efficacy. In conclusion, a polymersome carrying an anticancer drug and melittin could overcome MDR by regulating P-gp overexpression pathways.

The present study aimed to clinically evaluate the effect of T-cell dysfunction in hemodialysis (HD) patients with latent tuberculosis (TB) infection (LTBI) who were false-negatives in the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT) test. Whole blood samples from a total of 20 active TB patients, 83 HD patients, and 52 healthy individuals were collected, and the QFT-GIT test was used for measuring Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)-specific interferon gamma (IFN-γ) level. The positive rate of the IFN-γ release assays (IGRAs) in HD patients was lower than the negative rate. The mean value of MTB-specific IFN-γ level, which determines the positive rate of the IGRA test, was highest in active TB, followed by HD patients and healthy individuals. Among HD patients, phytohemagglutinin A (PHA)-stimulated IFN-γ levels of approximately 40% were 10.00 IU/mL or less. However, there was no low level of PHA-stimulated IFN-γ in the healthy individuals. This reveals that T-cell function in HD patients was reduced compared to healthy individuals, which leads to the possibility that QFT-GIT results in HD patients are false-negative. The clinical manifestations of TB in patients on HD are quite non-specific, making timely diagnosis difficult and delaying the initiation of curative treatment, delay being a major determinant of outcome.

In this work, we present a method for designing a dielectric lens with a reduced height that is easily printed with one-take 3D printing. For the first time, we prove that the configuration of a printout made of resin material can be modified for effective permittivity variation and apply the technique to a lens antenna design. The lens is printed with SLA printing and mounted on top of a conventional patch antenna, resulting in a 6.87 dB directivity improvement. The height of the proposed lens is reduced by about 15% compared to the reference lens design. The final proposed lens antenna operates at 5.8 GHz, with a height and diameter of 1.35 λ and 1.35 λ, respectively. A prototype was built, and all of the computed expectations from the full-wave electromagnetic simulations in this work were verified experimentally.

Tuberculosis (TB), which is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), is a serious infectious disease with high infection and mortality rates and is a public health problem around the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, one-third of the world's population is latently infected with MTB, and 5 to 10% of those with latent TB infection (LTBI) have the potential to develop active TB once in their lifetime. Therefore, TB management for promptly distinguishing LTBI from active TB and for proper treatment is important. LTBI is currently diagnosed using the tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon gamma (IFN-γ) release assay (IGRA). However, this test is substantially limited by its inability to distinguish active TB from LTBI. It is necessary to discover indicators that can be used for effective TB management and to develop diagnostic methods. In the present study, we used IGRA and complete blood count (CBC) analysis for discrimination of active TB, LTBI, and healthy control groups. Performance interference between QoS and best-effort applications is getting more aggravated as data-intensive applications are rapidly and widely spreading in recently emerging computing systems. While the completely fair scheduler (CFS) of the Linux kernel has been extensively used to support performance isolation in a multitasking environment, it falls short of addressing memory-related interference due to memory access contention and insufficient cache coverage. Though quite a few memory-aware performance isolation mechanisms have been proposed in the literature, many of them rely on hardware-based solutions, inflexible resource management or ineffective execution throttling, which makes it difficult for them to be used in widely deployed operating systems like Linux running on a COTS SoC platform. We propose a memory-aware fair-share scheduling algorithm that can make QoS applications less susceptible to memory-related interference from other co-running applications. Our algorithm carefully separates the genuine memory-related stall from a running task's CPU cycles and compensates the task for the memory-related interference so that the task gets the desired share of CPU before it is too late. The proposed approach is adaptive, effective and efficient in the sense that it does not rely on any static allocation or partitioning of memory hardware resources and improves the performance of QoS applications with only a negligible runtime overhead. Moreover, it is a software-only solution that can be easily integrated into the kernel scheduler with only minimal modification to the kernel. We implement our algorithm into the CFS of Linux and name the end result mCFS. We show the utility and effectiveness of the approach via extensive experiments.

Capsule endoscopy (CE) is a preferred diagnostic method for analyzing small bowel diseases. However, capsule endoscopes capture a sparse number of images because of their mechanical limitations. Post-procedural management using computational methods can enhance image quality. Additional information, including depth, can be obtained by using recently developed computer vision techniques. It is possible to measure the size of lesions and track the trajectory of capsule endoscopes using the computer vision technology, without requiring additional equipment. Moreover, the computational analysis of CE images can help detect lesions more accurately within a shorter time. Newly introduced deep leaning-based methods have shown more remarkable results over traditional computerized approaches. A large-scale standard dataset should be prepared to develop an optimal algorithms for improving the diagnostic yield of CE. The close collaboration between information technology and medical professionals is needed.

Abstract Background One-third of cervical cancer patients are still diagnosed at advanced stages. The five-year survival rate is decreased in about 50% of advanced stage cervical cancer patients worldwide, and the clinical outcomes are remarkably varied and difficult to predict. One of the miRNAs known to be associated with cancer tumorigenesis is miR-944. However, the prognostic value of miR-944 in cervical cancer has not been fully investigated. The aim of this study was to analyze clinical significance and prognostic value of miR-944 in cervical cancer. Methods The expression levels of miR-944 were detected using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction in five types of cervical cancer cell lines and 116 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) cervical tissues. The association between the expression levels of miR-944 and prognostic value was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox proportional hazards model. Whole blood Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) release assay (IGRA) is used to diagnose LTBI based on the secretion of IFN-γ by T-cells in the whole blood by using a specific antigen of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, the ability of IGRA to distinguish active TB from LTBI is considerably limited. Distinguishing active TB from LTBI is necessary to identify indicators that can be used to effectively manage TB and develop diagnostic methods. In the present study, we used a Luminex multiplex bead array (a bead-based antibody–antigen sandwich method). The whole blood level of acute phase proteins (APPs), such as endoglin (ENG), procalcitonin (PCT), C-reactive protein (CRP), and α1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), in active TB, LTBI, and healthy individuals were analyzed and quantified. The APP test results for the serum and whole blood samples showed that the levels of PCT, CRP, and AGP were significantly increased (p < 0.0500; area under curve = 0.955) in active TB. The level of these markers in the whole blood of active TB, LTBI, and healthy individuals could provide data for effective diagnosis and treatment of TB.

Sepsis is one of the medical emergencies, and its early detection, within the first hours of development, and proper management improve outcomes. Molecular diagnostic assays using whole blood collected from patients with suspected sepsis have been developed, but the decision making is difficult because of the possibility of false positives, due to contamination. Here, we evaluated the performance of the reverse blot hybridization assay (REBA) Sepsis-ID test for the detection of sepsis-causing microorganisms using whole-blood samples. In addition, the concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT) were determined to evaluate whether these biomarkers can provide criteria for performing REBA Sepsis-ID in clinical settings. For this study, EDTA-anticoagulated whole blood was simultaneously collected for REBA Sepsis-ID and blood culture from 440 patients with suspected sepsis, from January to October 2015. In addition, CRP and PCT concentrations were measured in 227 patients. The overall positive rates of REBA Sepsis-ID and blood culture were 16.6% (73/440) and 13.9% (61/440), respectively. The pathogen-positive rates of REBA Sepsis-ID and blood culture were 9.8% (43/440) and 9.5% (42/440), respectively. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curves of PCT and CRP for predicting pathogen-positive results of REBA Sepsis-ID were 0.72 and 0.69, respectively. Spin-orbit entangled pseudospins hold promise for a wide array of exotic magnetism ranging from a Heisenberg antiferromagnet to a Kitaev spin liquid depending on the lattice and bonding geometry, but many of the host materials suffer from lattice distortions and deviate from idealized models in part due to inherent strong pseudospin-lattice coupling. Here, we report on the synthesis of a magnetic superlattice comprising the single (n=1) and the double (n=2) layer members of the Ruddlesden-Popper series iridates Sr_{n+1}Ir_{n}O_{3n+1} alternating along the c axis, and provide a comprehensive study of its lattice and magnetic structures using scanning transmission electron microscopy, resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering, third harmonic generation measurements, and Raman spectroscopy. The superlattice is free of the structural distortions reported for the parent phases and has a higher point group symmetry, while preserving the magnetic orders and pseudospin dynamics inherited from the parent phases, featuring two magnetic transitions with two symmetry-distinct orders. We infer weaker pseudospin-lattice coupling from the analysis of Raman spectra and attribute it to frustrated magnetic-elastic couplings. Thus, the superlattice expresses a near ideal network of effective spin-one-half moments on a square lattice.

Early diagnosis increases the treatment success rate for active tuberculosis (ATB) and decreases mortality. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been studied as blood-based markers of several infectious diseases. We performed miRNA profiling to identify differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs using whole blood samples from 10 healthy controls (HCs), 15 subjects with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), and 12 patients with ATB, and investigated the expression of the top six miRNAs at diagnosis and over the treatment period in addition to performing miRNA-target gene network and gene ontology analyses. miRNA profiling identified 84 DE miRNAs in patients with ATB, including 80 upregulated and four downregulated miRNAs. Receiver operating characteristic curves of the top six miRNAs exhibited excellent distinguishing efficiency with an area under curve (AUC) value > 0.85. Among them, miR-199a-3p and miR-6886-3p can differentiate between ATB and LTBI. Anti-TB treatment restored the levels of miR-199b-3p, miR-199a-3p, miR-16-5p, and miR-374c-5p to HC levels. Furthermore, 108 predicted target genes were related to the regulation of cellular amide metabolism, intrinsic apoptotic signaling, translation, transforming growth factor beta receptor signaling, and cysteine-type endopeptidase activity. The DE miRNAs identified herein are potential biomarkers for diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring in ATB.

To demonstrate that the near-point-of-convergence (npc) examination is performed subjectively, the visual fixation and four-prism diopter (Δ) base-out (BO) examinations can be conducted with a kiosk-type objective examination method based on gaze tracking, and can be compared with the existing method. Objective examination equipment was used to verify effectiveness. Fifteen adult men and women in their 20s and 30s (26.87 ± 3.31 years) with visual acuity of 0.8 (logMAR: 0.1, Snellen: 20/25(6/7.5)) or higher (corrected vision in the case of ametropia) underwent the npc, visual fixation, and 4 Δ BO examinations based on the existing examination method followed by the gaze-tracking-based kiosk-type examination method. Three examinations were performed, and a comparative analysis was conducted. The gaze tracking method used a method of extracting eye feature points, and it was judged that the ocular moved when the movement of 30 eye feature points at the edge of the iris was detected. In the comparison between the existing method and the kiosk-type method, there were no statistically significant differences in npc, visual fixation, and 4 Δ BO examinations. Npc examinations were performed extensively by the existing subjective method, however, it seems that these can be conducted objectively using the kiosk-type method. Visual fixation and 4 Δ BO examinations require high-examination proficiency because finely moving ocular movements need to be observed, but it is judged that examinations can be performed more easily and accurately when combined with the kiosk-type method. The symmetrical characteristics between the two test results are expected to serve as a basis for using the kiosk-type examination method in clinical practice.

Abstract Background Prior to clinical trials of new TB drugs or therapeutic vaccines, it is necessary to develop monitoring tools to predict treatment outcomes in TB patients. Urine interferon gamma inducible protein 10 (IP-10) is a potential biomarker of treatment response in chronic hepatitis C virus infection and lung diseases, including tuberculosis. In this study, we assessed IP-10 levels in urine samples from patients with active TB at diagnosis, during treatment, and at completion, and compared these with levels in serum samples collected in parallel from matched patients to determine whether urine IP-10 can be used to monitor treatment response in patients with active TB. Methods IP-10 was measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays in urine and serum samples collected concomitantly from 23 patients with active TB and 21 healthy adults (44 total individuals). The Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed rank test were used for comparisons among healthy controls and patients at three time points, and LOESS regression was used for longitudinal data. Results The levels of IP-10 in urine increased significantly after 2 months of treatment (P = 0.0163), but decreased by the completion of treatment (P = 0.0035). Serum IP-10 levels exhibited a similar trend, but did not increase significantly after 2 months of treatment in patients with active TB. Conclusions Unstimulated IP-10 in urine can be used as a biomarker to monitor treatment response in patients with active pulmonary TB.

Abstract Background Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of death among female patients with cancer in the world. High risk human papillomavirus has causal roles in cervical cancer initiation and progression by deregulating several cellular processes. However, HPV infection is not sufficient for cervical carcinoma development. Therefore, other genetic and epigenetic factors may be involved in this complex disease, and the identification of which may lead to better diagnosis and treatment. Our aim was to analyze the expression of microRNAs in cervical cancer cases positive or negative for HPV E6/E7 mRNA, and to assess their diagnostic usefulness and relevance. Study region: This study region is the Napa River basin in California whose antecedent soil moisture states and precipitation magnitudes are primary drivers to occur extreme floods. Study focus: This study assessed the influence of antecedent moisture condition on flood frequency, based on an experimental application scheme and pre-processing. For this purpose, T-year flood simulations were conducted using a distributed hydrologic model. Distributed precipitation patterns which have an amount of precipitation corresponding to a specific T-year return period were generated by representative radar-based precipitation fields and precipitation frequency analysis. Dry, normal, and wet of antecedent moisture condition were applied to each T-year flood simulation to reflect variable initial soil moisture states. New hydrological insights for the region: The relationship among flood frequency, antecedent moisture condition, and precipitation frequency was derived for a specific target storm event. For normal antecedent moisture states, the relation showed that T-year precipitation could generate floods having return intervals nearly identical to those derived using gage records. For saturated soil conditions, a 7-year precipitation event could trigger a 100-year flood. Conversely, a 200-year precipitation event with dry soil conditions might generate only a 15-year flood event. The results emphasize the importance of soil moisture to flood runoff and suggest that soil-moisture monitoring could aid in improving flood forecasting. Background: It is important to understand the ability to inhibit mycobacterial growth in healthy adults who would have been Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccinated in childhood as this group will be the potential target population for novel booster TB vaccine trials. In this study we investigated not only the long-term immunity induced by childhood BCG vaccination but also protective immunity in terms of the ability to inhibit mycobacterial growth in those who were BCG vaccinated in childhood, with evidence of recent or remote TB infection.Methods: We measured the baseline immune response using a functional mycobacterial growth inhibition assay (MGIA) as a novel approach and an intracellular cytokine staining (ICS) assay as a reference approach in healthy adults, with different status of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection.Results: Based on MGIA responses in historically BCG-vaccinated healthy adults, demographical characteristics including age, and gender did not affect mycobacterial growth inhibition in PBMC. However, the uninfected healthy control (HC) group showed a greater ability to inhibit mycobacterial growth compared with the latent TB infection (LTBI) group (P = 0.0005). In terms of the M. tuberculosis antigen-specific T-cell immune response in diluted whole blood quantitated using an ICS assay, the LTBI group had a higher frequency of polyfunctional CD 4+ T cells compared with the HC group (P = 0.0002), although there was no correlation between ICS and the MGIA assay.Conclusion: The Mtb infection status had a significant impact on mycobacterial growth inhibition in PBMC from healthy adults in South Korea, a country with an intermediate burden of tuberculosis, with healthy controls showing the greatest mycobacterial growth inhibition.

Two novel esterase genes, est2L and est4L, were identified from a previously constructed metagenomic library derived from an oil-polluted mud flat sample. The encoded Est2L and Est4L were composed of 839 and 267 amino acids, respectively, without signal peptides. Est2L was a unique fusion type of protein composed of two domains: a domain of the CzcO superfamily, associated with a cationic diffusion promoter with CzcD, and a domain of the acetylesterase superfamily, belonging to family IV with conserved motifs, such as HGG, GXSAG, and GXPP. Est2L was the first fused esterase with a CzcO domain. Est4L belonged to family V with GXS, GXSMGG, and PTL motifs. Native Est2L and Est4L were found to be in dimeric and tetrameric forms, respectively. Est2L and Est4L showed the highest activities at 60 °C and 50 °C, respectively, and at a pH of 10.0. Est2L preferred short length substrates, especially p-nitrophenyl (pNP)-acetate, with moderate butyrylcholinesterase activity, whereas Est4L showed the highest activity with pNP-decanoate and had broad specificity. Significant effects were not observed in Est2L from Co2+ and Zn2+, although Est2L contains the domain CzcD. Est2L and Est4L showed high stabilities in 30% methanol and 1% Triton X-100. These enzymes could be used for a variety of applications, such as detergent and mining processing under alkaline conditions.

We theoretically model the near-field (NF) absorption for a multilayer micro-cavity (MMC) structure and investigate the contribution of the NF absorption to the dipole radiation power in top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The NF absorption occurs due to the interaction between an evanescent wave with a large in-plane wave vector and a planar metal layer in the vicinity of the dipole radiation. The analytical expressions of the NF absorption in the MMC structure are derived from the plane wave expansions of the electric field amplitude, which includes the two-beam and multi-beam interference terms. The transverse magnetic polarization light emitted by both horizontally and vertically oriented dipole emitters is considered in the NF absorption while the contribution of the transverse electric polarization light is neglected. Based on the total spectral power density calculated in a top-emitting OLED, the respective spectral response functions of surface plasmon (SP) modes and NF absorption are compared, where the summation of the Lorentzian line shape functions is used to represent spectral responses of SP modes. At large values of in-plane wave vectors, the spectral response caused by the NF absorption becomes significant and approaches the total spectral power density. In addition, the relative optical powers from various dipole dissipation mechanisms are calculated with respect to the dipole emitter position in the emission layer (EML), which shows the optical power coupled to the NF absorption is predominant over other mechanisms when the distance between the dipole emitter and the EML/Ag interface is less than 10 nm in the top-emitting OLED.

There have been few reports on the kinetics of hemodialyzed (HD) patients’ immune responses in latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). Therefore, in the present study, messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expression levels of nine immune markers were analyzed to discriminate between HD patients with LTBI and healthy individuals. Nine cytokines and chemokines were screened through relative mRNA expression levels in whole blood samples after stimulation with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)-specific antigens from HD patients with LTBI (HD/LTBI), HD patients without LTBI, and healthy individuals, and results were compared with the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT) test. We confirmed that the C-C motif chemokine 11 (CCL11) mRNA expression level of the HD/LTBI group was significantly higher than the other two groups. Especially, the CCL11 mRNA expression level of the >0.7 IU/mL group in the QFT-GIT test was significantly higher than the p = 0.0043). The present study reveals that the relative mRNA expression of CCL11 was statistically different in LTBI based on the current cut-off value (i.e., ≥0.35 IU/mL) and in the >0.7 IU/mL group. These results suggest that CCL11 mRNA expression might be an alternative biomarker for LTBI diagnosis in HD patients.

In general, the optical and electrical characteristics of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells have been studied under the condition that sunlight is normally incident from the air to the CIGS solar cell having no thick front encapsulation layers. To obtain the calculation results in a realistic module application, we calculate the optical and current–voltage (J–V) characteristics of surface-textured CIGS solar cells by simultaneously considering the thick front encapsulation layers and oblique sunlight incidence. Using the proposed angle-dependent equispaced thickness averaging method (ADETAM), we incoherently model two successive front encapsulation layers of a cover glass layer and an ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) layer, whose respective thicknesses are greater than the coherence length of sunlight (~0.6 μm). The angular dependences of reflectance spectrum and J–V curves are calculated and compared in a surface-textured CIGS solar cell with and without the inclusion of the two front encapsulation layers. We show that the optical absorption improvement of the surface-textured CIGS solar cell over the planar CIGS solar cell can be over-predicted when the thick front encapsulation layers are not considered in the optical modeling.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. MicroRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) play an important role in tumorigenesis, and thus, they have been identified as potential targets for translational research with diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic markers. This study aimed to identify differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs in breast cancer using the Cancer Genome Atlas. The miRNA profiles of 755 breast cancer tissues and 86 adjacent non-cancerous breast tissues were analyzed using Multi Experiment Viewer; miRNA–mRNA network analyses and constructed KEGG pathways with the predicted target genes were performed. The clinical relevance of miRNAs was investigated using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) analysis, sensitivity, and specificity. The analysis identified 28 DE miRNAs in breast cancer tissues, including nine upregulated and 19 downregulated miRNAs, compared to non-cancerous breast tissues (p < 0.001). The AUC for each DE miRNA, miR-10b, miR-21, miR-96, miR-99a, miR-100, miR-125b-1, miR-125b-2, miR-139, miR-141, miR-145, miR-182, miR-183, miR-195, miR-200a, miR-337, miR-429, and let-7c, exceeded 0.9, indicating excellent diagnostic performance in breast cancer. Moreover, 1381 potential target genes were predicted using the prediction database tool, miRNet. These genes are related to PD-L1 expression and PD-1 checkpoint in cancer, MAPK signaling, apoptosis, and TNF pathways; hence, they regulate the development, progression, and immune escape of cancer. Thus, these 28 miRNAs can serve as prospective biomarkers for the diagnosis of breast cancer. Taken together, these results provide insight into the pathogenic mechanisms and potential therapies for breast cancer.

Background and objectives: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. Early stage diagnosis is important for predicting increases in treatment success rates and decreases in patient mortality. Recently, circulating biomarkers such as circulating tumor cells, circulating tumor DNA, exosomes, and circulating microRNAs have been examined as blood-based markers for the diagnosis of breast cancer. Although miR-202 has been studied for its function or expression in breast cancer, its potential diagnostic value in a clinical setting remains elusive and miR-202 has not been investigated in South Korea. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic utility of miR-202 in plasma samples of breast cancer patients in South Korea. Materials and Methods: We investigated miR-202 expression in the plasma of 30 breast cancer patients during diagnosis along with 30 healthy controls in South Korea by quantitative reverse transcription PCR. Results: The results showed that circulating miR-202 levels were significantly elevated in the breast cancer patients compared with those in healthy controls (p < 0.001). The sensitivity and specificity of circulating miR-202 were 90.0% and 93.0%, respectively. Additionally, circulating miR-202 showed high positivity at early stage. The positive rate of miR-202 was as follows: 100% (10/10) for stage I, 90% (9/10) for stage II, and 80% (8/10) for stage III. miR-202 was also a predictor of a 9.6-fold high risk for breast cancer (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Additional alternative molecular biomarkers for diagnosis and management of pre-cancer patients are needed. Circulating miR-202 might be potential diagnostic tool for detecting early stage breast cancer.

A Kitaev quantum spin liquid is a prime example of novel quantum magnetism of spin-orbit entangled pseudospin-1/2 moments in a honeycomb lattice. Most candidate materials such as Na_{2}IrO_{3} have many competing exchange interactions beyond the minimal Kitaev-Heisenberg model whose small variations in the strength of the interactions produce huge differences in low-energy dynamics. Our incomplete knowledge of dynamic spin correlations hampers identification of a minimal model and quantification of the proximity to the Kitaev quantum spin-liquid phase. Here, we report momentum- and energy-resolved magnetic excitation spectra in a honeycomb lattice Na_{2}IrO_{3} measured using a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectrometer capable of 12 meV resolution. Measured spectra at a low temperature show that the dynamic response lacks resolution-limited coherent spin waves in most parts of the Brillouin zone but has a discernible dispersion and spectral weight distribution within the energy window of 60 meV. A systematic investigation using the exact diagonalization method and direct comparison of high-resolution experimental spectra and theoretical simulations allow us to confine a parameter regime in which the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model reasonably reproduces the main feature of the observed magnetic excitations. Hidden Kitaev quantum spin-liquid and Heisenberg phases found in the complex parameter space are used as references to propose the picture of renormalized magnons as explaining the incoherent nature of magnetic excitations. Magnetic excitation spectra are taken at elevated temperatures to follow the temperature evolution of the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering dynamic response in the paramagnetic state. Whereas the low-energy excitation progressively diminishes as the zigzag order disappears, the broad high-energy excitation maintains its spectral weight up to a much higher temperature of 160 K. We suggest that the dominant nearest-neighbor interactions keep short-range correlations up to quite high temperatures with a specific short-range dynamics which has a possible connection to a proximate spin-liquid phase.

We numerically investigate the effects of an incoherent front cover glass on the current–voltage (J–V) characteristics of a Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cell using an integrated optoelectronic model. A 3-mm cover glass—the thickness of which was larger than the coherence length of sunlight—was incoherently modeled based on the equispaced thickness averaging method, where coherent simulation results of the wave equation were averaged over a set of equispaced phase thicknesses. The changes in optical power dissipation, absorptivity and electron–hole pair generation rate were calculated depending on the variation of the equispaced phase thickness. The calculation results of the J–V curves were obtained through numerical solutions of the coupled Poisson and continuity equations. By comparing the J–V curves calculated between coherently and incoherently modeled cover glass, we obtained a maximum ±0.54% deviation of the short-circuit current density. This demonstrates that the front cover glass should be modeled as optically incoherent to improve the calculation accuracy of the electrical J–V curves as well as the optical absorption characteristics in the optoelectronic modeling of CIGS solar cells.

After breast and colon cancer, cervical cancer is the third most common cancer of women worldwide. Since human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is known to be the predominant cause of cervical cancer, molecular HPV screening is currently used along with cytological and histological examination methods for precancer diagnosis. Nevertheless, the sensitivity of the current HPV test is less than 80%; thus, many cervical cancer cases are not able to be diagnosed by HPV screening alone, and likewise, patients with cervical cancer are often determined to be HPV-negative by the current screening methods. Therefore, human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) and Ki67 previously identified as cancer markers were attempted. And cervical exfoliated cells of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL), the most severe precancerous lesion of cancer, were used in the study. However, it takes a long time to collect enough specimens to conduct statistical analysis. Therefore, in the present study, microscope slides, cervical exfoliated cells on glass slides, were attempted. The results of the analysis demonstrated that hTERT and Ki67 expression levels were useful in distinguishing between cancerous and normal specimens, exhibiting a higher sensitivity and specificity than conventional HPV E6/E7 testing. And the study suggests clinical slide cell samples could be effectively used in the context of retrospective studies to identify novel biomarkers.

p63 is a transcription factor p53 family. Two major isoforms of p63, TAp63 with transactivation (TA) domain and ΔNp63 with truncated TA domain, have been reported to play opposing roles either in tumor suppression or oncogenic function. Little is known about the association of these two isoforms of p63 in the carcinogenesis of cervical cancer. In this study, the mRNA expression levels of TAp63 and ΔNp63 in 40 normal, 30 low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL), 38 high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL), and 52 cervical cancer formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues were examined using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). We analyzed the association between the ΔNp63 and ΔN/TAp63 mRNA expression ratio and clinicopathological parameters and compared disease-specific survival of each ΔNp63 mRNA expression and ΔN/TAp63 mRNA expression ratio. The ΔN/TAp63 mRNA expression ratio in cervical cancer showed higher sensitivity than the mRNA expression levels of ΔNp63 (52.0% vs 44.2%). The level of ΔN/TAp63 mRNA expression ratio in precancerous LSIL and HSIL was higher than in normal tissues (P = 0.01 and P = 0.003) and lower than in cervical cancer tissues (P = 0.03 and P = 0.02). Besides, the positive ΔN/TAp63 mRNA expression ratio was associated with bulky tumor size and high expression of Ki-67, the proliferation marker, in cervical cancer (P = 0.04 and P = 0.02). The cervical cancer patients with the positive ΔN/TAp63 mRNA expression ratio showed worse survival compared to those who with the negative expression ratio of ΔN/TAp63 (HR = 5.7, 95% CI: 1.6-19.9). In conclusion, the balance of TAp63 and ΔNp63 is closely related to the carcinogenesis of cervical cancer. The ΔN/TAp63 mRNA expression ratio could be useful as a diagnostic and prognostic marker of cervical cancer.

The Fabry-Pérot formulation has been widely used as a simple and intuitive optical modeling method of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, because the Fabry-Pérot formulation in the optical modeling of OLEDs does not include the effect of the dipole orientation and light polarization on light emission characteristics, rigorous electromagnetic models should be used, in spite of their heavy mathematical and computational complexity. In addition, the validity and the limitation of the Fabry-Pérot formulation for OLEDs have yet to be proven. We propose a generalized Fabry-Pérot formulation to calculate the dependence of the dipole orientation and light polarization on the angular emission characteristics using a simple analytical equation rather than a complicated electromagnetic model. The generalized Fabry-Pérot formulation is derived, together with detailed steps, and becomes equivalent to the current Fabry-Pérot formulation in isotropic dipole orientation. In addition, the physical interpretation of the proposed Fabry-Pérot formulation is elucidated in comparison with the quantum mechanical model. To demonstrate the applicability and the validity of the generalized Fabry-Pérot formulation, the angular emission spectra of a top-emitting OLED are calculated with respect to the horizontal dipole ratio and the light polarization, which can be easily calculated based on a simple analytical equation.

We propose a simple numerical modeling method to consider the effect of the incoherent thick substrate on the absorption characteristics of thin-film solar cells. In the proposed “equispaced thickness method” (ETM), the incoherent optical characteristics of the thick substrate are modeled by adding an additional thickness that gives an equispaced phase shift to the incoherent substrate and averaging the coherent simulation results over several equispaced thicknesses. The proposed ETM can be used to consider the effect of the incoherent glass substrate without complicated mathematical and computational procedures and is applicable to not only planar but also surface-textured thin-film solar cells. By applying the proposed method to the numerical modeling based on the finite element method (FEM), we calculate the reflectance spectra in planar and surface-textured thin-film solar cells, respectively. The simulation condition of the FEM, such as mesh size, is determined to match the numerical results based on the ETM with the analytical results obtained by the generalized transfer matrix method. For comparison, the reflectance spectra in the same structures are calculated by taking the average over coherent calculation results for a large number of random thicknesses of the incoherent layer. According to the comparison of the calculated statistical deviations from the exact solution between the ETM and the random thickness method, the ETM reduces the number of simulations by at least a factor of 50 with the same accuracy.

A newly designed Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter (TEPC) has been developed for the CubeSat mission, SIGMA (Scientific cubesat with Instruments for Global Magnetic field and rAdiation) to investigate space radiation. In order to test the performance of the TEPC, we have performed heavy ion beam experiments with the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC), Japan. In space, human cells can be exposed to complex radiation sources, such as X-ray, Gamma ray, energetic electrons, protons, neutrons and heavy charged particles in a huge range of energies. These generate much a larger range of Linear Energy Transfer (LET) than on the ground and cause unexpected effects on human cells. In order to measure a large range of LET, from 0.3 to 1,000 keV/μm, we developed a compact TEPC which measures ionized particles produced by collisions between radiation sources and tissue equivalent materials in the detector. By measuring LET spectra, we can easily derive the equivalent dose from the complicated space radiation field. In this HIMAC experiment, we successfully obtained the linearity response for the TEPC with Fe 500 MeV/u and C 290 MeV/u beams and demonstrated the performance of the active radiation detector.

Do people with higher life satisfaction have more children? Having children requires considerable energy and investment on the part of parents. However, even in countries where contraceptives are easily available and widely used, where having children is optional and most of time the result of an intended action, parenthood has not gone "out of fashion". This paper tests the hypothesis that higher life satisfaction fosters reproductive behavior. We argue that people satisfied with their overall life feel better prepared to start the monumental task of childrearing. If, it is suggested, life satisfaction facilitates fertility, then this positive link should be observable in contemporary low fertility societies. The hypothesis is tested by taking overall life satisfaction as a determinant of fertility behavior using long longitudinal data available for developed countries: namely for Australia, Germany, Russia, South Korea, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. We find that higher levels of subjective well-being are, indeed, associated with a higher probability of having children in all the countries considered. We, therefore, conclude that life satisfaction favors reproduction, at least in low fertility societies.

This study aims to address hydrological processes and impacts of an atmospheric river (AR) event that occurred during 15−18 February 2004 in the Russian River basin in California. The National Water Model (NWM), a fully distributed hydrologic model, was used to evaluate the hydrological processes including soil moisture flux, overland flow, and streamflow. Observed streamflow and volumetric soil water content data were used to evaluate the performance of the NWM using various error metrics. The simulation results showed that this AR event (15−18 February 2004) with a long duration of precipitation could cause not only deep soil saturation, but also high direct runoff depth. Taken together, the analysis revealed the complex interaction between precipitation and land surface response to the AR event. The results emphasize the significance of a change of water contents in various soil layers and suggest that soil water content monitoring could aid in improving flood forecasting accuracy caused by the extreme events such as the AR.

Infrared signature analysis that considers both the target and background is fundamentally important to the development of target detection systems as well as in the design of ships for thermal stealth. This paper presents the analysis results of long-term infrared signature variations in terms of the apparent spectral-contrast radiant intensity measured using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR)-based hyperspectral images. A novel apparent spectral-contrast radiant intensity (AS-CRI) measure is proposed to evaluate the spectral infrared signature accurately at the sensor point of view. The spectral information by AS-CRI can provide the optimal band for either target detection or thermal stealth purposes, considering the background and atmospheric transmittance. In addition, the effects of seasonal and weather variations were analyzed from the long-term hyperspectral image database constructed during 2018.01–2018.08 (three times a day). A TELOPS HYPER-CAM MWE camera was adopted to acquire 374 bands in 1.5–5.5 μm. The automatic weather system (AWS) can provide 24 h weather recordings for the signature evaluation. The experimental results validate the utility of the novel AS-CRI method to find spectral bands for a range of infrared signature applications including small infrared target detection.
