Abstract

The IOC made recommendations for recording and reporting epidemiological data on injuries and illness in sports in 2020, but with little, if any, focus on female athletes. Therefore, the aims of this supplement to the IOC consensus statement are to (i) propose a taxonomy for categorisation of female athlete health problems across the lifespan; (ii) make recommendations for data capture to inform consistent recording and reporting of symptoms, injuries, illnesses and other health outcomes in sports injury epidemiology and (iii) make recommendations for specifications when applying the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology-Sport Injury and Illness Surveillance (STROBE-SIIS) to female athlete health data.In May 2021, five researchers and clinicians with expertise in sports medicine, epidemiology and female athlete health convened to form a consensus working group, which identified key themes. Twenty additional experts were invited and an iterative process involving all authors was then used to extend the IOC consensus statement, to include issues which affect female athletes.Ten domains of female health for categorising health problems according to biological, life stage or environmental factors that affect females in sport were identified: menstrual and gynaecological health; preconception and assisted reproduction; pregnancy; postpartum; menopause; breast health; pelvic floor health; breast feeding, parenting and caregiving; mental health and sport environments.This paper extends the IOC consensus statement to include 10 domains of female health, which may affect female athletes across the lifespan, from adolescence through young adulthood, to mid-age and older age. Our recommendations for data capture relating to female athlete population characteristics, and injuries, illnesses and other health consequences, will improve the quality of epidemiological studies, to inform better injury and illness prevention strategies.

34. FIFA 11 for Health Programme: Implementation in Five Countries in Sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of the FIFA 11 for Health programme in increasing children's knowledge about communicable and non-communicable diseases in five countries of Sub-Saharan Africa. Method: A prospective five-cohort study was implemented in schools in Ghana (17), Malawi (12), Namibia (11), Tanzania (18) and Zambia (11). The programme consisted of eleven 90-minute sessions consisting of two 45-minute halves of Play Football (football skills) and Play Fair (health issues). Participants were boys and girls aged 10-14 years: Ghana (906), Malawi (1098), Namibia (439), Tanzania (720), Zambia (651). The main outcome measures recorded were children's attendances at each session, their health knowledge (30-item questionnaire) before and after the interventions and the children's evaluation of the programme itself by means of a six-item questionnaire. Results: Mean attendance by children during the programme ranged from 88% (Malawi) to 99% (Tanzania) of participants. Increases in the children's overall level of health knowledge were recorded in all countries: range: 11% (Malawi) to 25% (Namibia). Children's overall evaluation-rating of the programme was very positive in all countries, ranging from 93% (Zambia) to 98% (Namibia, Tanzania). Conclusions: The FIFA 11 for Health programme produced significant increases in children's health knowledge and their awareness of disease prevention using an in-school, football-based health education programme. This success was most likely linked to the very high satisfaction rating given to the programme by the children involved. The success of the interventions also demonstrated the benefit of collaborating with the Ministries of Education in each country.

Abstract

Background: While several studies on mental health of elite athletes were published in recent years, few compared the prevalence with the general population and none included field hockey players. Aims: To analyze the prevalence of symptoms of depression and generalized anxiety disorder in field hockey players of different skill levels and to compare it to the general population. Methods: Male and female hockey players from different leagues were asked to answer questions on player characteristics, the Centre of Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES‐D) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder‐7 (GAD‐7). Results: One hundred and eighty‐seven players (incl. 54 first and 28 second league players) participated in the study (response rate 97.4%). More than a third (n = 64; 35.0%) reported to be affected by an injury/health complaint, but 157 (86.3%) were able to train and play without limitations. The CES‐D score indicated depression symptoms in more female (n = 15; 18.3%) than male (n = 5; 4.8%) players (χ2=8.8; p < 0.01). No male and one female player had symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder. Players who played 60 or more matches in the previous 12 months had on average significantly higher depression (t = 2.3; p < 0.05) and generalized anxiety scores (t = 4.2; p < 0.001) than players who played fewer matches. The prevalence of depression and of generalized anxiety symptoms was similar to or lower than in the general population. Although 20 (10.7%) players had depression symptoms, only 4 (2.2%) received psychological counseling or psychotherapy. Conclusion: It is recommended to provide routine screening of mental health problems and low‐threshold access to adequate treatment for elite athletes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
