Abstract It remains unclear whether pulmonary fibrosis-like changes differ in patients with different SARS-CoV-2 variants. This study aimed to compare pulmonary fibrotic changes between two SARS-CoV-2 variant periods (delta vs. pre-delta) in critically ill patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. Clinical data and chest CT images of patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia receiving mechanical ventilation were collected from 10 hospitals in South Korea over two periods: delta (July-December, 2021; n = 64) and pre-delta (February, 2020-June, 2021; n = 120). Fibrotic changes on chest CT were evaluated through visual assessment. Of 184 patients, the mean age was 64.6 years, and 60.5% were ale. Fibrosis-like changes on chest CT (median 51 days from enrollment to follow up CT scan, interquartile range 27–76 days) were identified in 75.3%. Delta group showed more fibrosis-like changes (≥ 2) (69.8% vs. 43.1%, P = 0.001) and more frequent reticulation and architectural distortion+/-parenchymal band than pre-delta group. Even after propensity score matching with clinical variables, delta group had more severe (≥ 2) fibrosis-like changes (71.4% vs. 38.8%, P = 0.001), and more frequent reticulation and architectural distortion+/-parenchymal band than pre-delta group. Our data suggest that critically ill patients with SARS-CoV-2 in delta period had more severe pulmonary fibrosis-like changes than those in pre-delta period.

Abstract Limited knowledge exists on the quality of polyclonal antibody responses generated following Marburg virus (MARV) infection and its evolution in survivors. In this study, we evaluate MARV proteome-wide antibody repertoire longitudinally in convalescent phase approximately every six months for five years following MARV infection in ten human survivors. Differential kinetics were observed for IgM vs IgG vs IgA epitope diversity, antibody binding, antibody affinity maturation and Fc-receptor interaction to MARV proteins. Durability of MARV-neutralizing antibodies is low in survivors. MARV infection induces a diverse epitope repertoire with predominance against GP, VP40, VP30 and VP24 that persisted up to 5 years post-exposure. However, the IgM and IgA repertoire declines over time. Within MARV-GP, IgG recognize antigenic sites predominantly in the amino-terminus, wing domain and GP2-heptad repeat. Interestingly, MARV infection generates robust durable FcɣRI, FcɣRIIA and FcɣRIIIA IgG-Fc receptor interactions. Immunization with immunodominant MARV epitopes reveals conserved wing region between GP1 and GP2, induces neutralizing antibodies against MARV. These findings demonstrate that MARV infection generates a diverse, long-lasting, non-neutralizing, IgG antibody repertoire that perturbs disease by FcɣR activity. This information, along with discovery of neutralizing immunogen in wing domain, could aid in development of effective therapeutics and vaccines against Marburg virus.

Abstract While the sensorimotor cortices are central neural substrates for motor control and learning, how the interaction between their subregions with visual cortices contributes to acquiring de novo visuomotor skills is poorly understood. We design a continuous visuomotor task in fMRI where participants control a cursor using their fingers while learning an arbitrary finger-to-cursor mapping. To investigate visuomotor interaction in the de novo motor task, we manipulate visual feedback of a cursor such that they learn to control using fingers under two alternating conditions: online cursor feedback is available or unavailable except when a target is reached. As a result, we find double dissociation of fMRI activity in subregions of the sensorimotor and visual cortices. Specifically, motor and late visual cortices are more active with online cursor feedback, and somatosensory and early visual cortices are more active without online cursor feedback. We also find a significant reduction in functional connectivity between somatosensory cortices and early visual cortices, which is highly correlated with performance improvement. These findings support the distinct interaction between subregions of sensorimotor cortices and visual cortices, while the connectivity analysis highlights the critical role of somatosensory cortices during de novo motor learning.

Music identification is widely regarded as a solved problem for music searching in quiet environments, but its performance tends to degrade in TV broadcast audio owing to the presence of dialogue or sound effects. In addition, constructing an accurate dataset for measuring the performance of background music monitoring in TV broadcast audio is challenging. We propose a framework for monitoring background music by automatic identification and introduce a background music cue sheet. The framework comprises three main components: music identification, music-speech separation, and music detection. In addition, we introduce the Cue-K-Drama dataset, which includes reference songs, audio tracks from 60 episodes of five Korean TV drama series, and corresponding cue sheets that provide the start and end timestamps of background music. Experimental results on the constructed and existing datasets demonstrate that the proposed framework, which incorporates music identification with music–speech separation and music detection, effectively enhances TV broadcast audio monitoring.

Abstract Purpose This study aims to comprehensively examine the determinants of depression among urban older adults in Seoul, utilizing the social-ecological model to address multifaceted influences. Methods A comprehensive analysis was conducted using data from the 2022 Seoul Aging Survey, which surveyed 2,914 individuals aged 65 and above. A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors contributing to depressive symptoms, including socio-demographic characteristics, health behaviors and status, research accessibility, social support, and environmental influences. Results This study revealed that poor subjective health (OR = 1.47) and the presence of multiple chronic diseases (OR = 1.59) significantly increased the risk of depressive symptoms among urban older adults. From a social support standpoint, living alone was associated with a higher risk of depression (OR = 1.66), low food security (OR = 2.56), and low digital competency (OR = 2.70) were all significant predictors of depressive symptoms. Additionally, a lack of engagement with cultural facilities (OR = 2.15) was identified as a critical environmental factor contributing to depression. Conclusions The findings underscore the need for comprehensive policy and practical interventions aimed at preventing chronic disease, enhancing social support networks, improving digital literacy, ensuring food security, and expanding access to healthcare and cultural facilities. Such measures are crucial in mitigating depression among urban older adults, thereby enhancing their overall well-being and quality of life.

Abstract Chromium tri-iodide (CrI3) is a prototypical ferromagnetic van der Waals insulator with its genuinely two-dimensional (2D) long-range magnetic order below 45 K demonstrated recently. The underlying magnetic anisotropy has not been completely understood while both the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction and the Kitaev $$-\Gamma$$ − Γ type interaction have been considered as the relevant magnetic Hamiltonian. In addition, the relation between the crystal structure and the magnetic order needs to be further elucidated concerning their possible coupling in few-layer samples and in the topmost surface layers of bulk samples. Here, we investigate these issues via temperature- and magnetic field-dependent terahertz spectroscopy on bulk CrI3 single crystals, focusing on the dynamics of ferromagnetic resonances (FMRs) and optical phonons in the terahertz (THz) region from 4 to 120 cm−1 (from 0.5 to 15 meV). We narrow down the possible ranges of the interaction parameters such as the off-diagonal symmetric terms and the single-ion anisotropy. The accurate values of these parameters significantly constrain the magnitude of possible Kitaev $$-\Gamma$$ − Γ exchange interaction and the topological magnon gap. Moreover, the structure-magnetism relationship was critically analyzed based on the temperature- and field-dependences of two $${{\rm{E}}}_{{\rm{u}}}$$ E u in-plane optical phonon modes, which shows that the commonly believed structural phase diagram of CrI3, derived from surface-preferential data, has to be seriously modified.

Abstract This study determined whether compared to conventional mechanical ventilation (MV), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is associated with decreased hospital mortality or fibrotic changes in patients with COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome. A cohort of 72 patients treated with ECMO and 390 with conventional MV were analyzed (February 2020–December 2021). Backgrounds The management of lung complications, especially fibrosis, after COVID-19 pneumonia, is an important issue in the COVID-19 post-pandemic era. We aimed to investigate risk factors for pulmonary fibrosis development in patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia.Methods Clinical and radiological data were prospectively collected from 64 patients who required mechanical ventilation due to COVID-19 pneumonia and were enrolled from eight hospitals in South Korea. Fibrotic changes on chest CT were evaluated by visual assessment, and extent of fibrosis (mixed disease score) was measured using automatic quantification system.Results 64 patients were enrolled, and their mean age was 58.2 years (64.1% were males). On chest CT (median interval: 60 days [IQR; 41–78 days] from enrolment), 35 (54.7%) patients showed ≥3 fibrotic lesions. The most frequent fibrotic change was traction bronchiectasis (47 patients, 73.4 %). Median extent of fibrosis measured by automatic quantification was 10.6% (IQR, 3.8–40.7%). Abstract Immunization via the respiratory route is predicted to increase the effectiveness of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Here, we evaluate the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of one or two doses of a live-attenuated murine pneumonia virus vector expressing SARS-CoV-2 prefusion-stabilized spike protein (MPV/S-2P), delivered intranasally/intratracheally to male rhesus macaques. A single dose of MPV/S-2P is highly immunogenic, and a second dose increases the magnitude and breadth of the mucosal and systemic anti-S antibody responses and increases levels of dimeric anti-S IgA in the airways. MPV/S-2P also induces S-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells in the airways that differentiate into large populations of tissue-resident memory cells within a month after the boost. One dose induces substantial protection against SARS-CoV-2 challenge, and two doses of MPV/S-2P are fully protective against SARS-CoV-2 challenge virus replication in the airways. A prime/boost immunization with a mucosally-administered live-attenuated MPV vector could thus be highly effective in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection and replication.

Objectives This study investigated the relationship between living arrangements and metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk in the adult population in the Republic of Korea. Methods The samples were derived from the data collected during the second year of the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The study targeted a total of 6,265 adults who were aged 20 years and above, and multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted. Living arrangements were classified into 4 categories: single-person households, 1-generation households, 2-generation households, and other family types. MetS was identified by the presence of at least 3 out of the 5 National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. Results For men, the odds ratio (ORs) for MetS in 1- and 2-generation households, compared to single-person households, were 0.92 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.55–1.54) and 0.97 (95% CI, 0.58–1.62), respectively. The OR for other types of households was 0.96 (95% CI, 0.79–1.17). For women, the OR for MetS in 1- and 2-generation households, compared to single-person households, were 1.52 (95% CI, 1.15–2.01) and 1.29 (95% CI, 1.01–1.67), respectively. Conclusion Our study suggests that a national strategy involving tailored interventions for women living in high-risk conditions is necessary to reduce the risk of MetS in Korean women.

Abstract Corticostriatal regions play a pivotal role in visuomotor learning. However, less research has been done on how fMRI activity in their subregions is related to task performance, which is provided as visual feedback during motor learning. To address this, we conducted an fMRI experiment in which participants acquired a complex de novo motor skill using continuous or binary visual feedback related to performance. We found a highly selective response related to performance in the entire striatum in both conditions and a relatively higher response in the caudate nucleus for the binary feedback condition. However, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) response was significant only for the continuous feedback condition. Furthermore, we also found functional distinction of the striatal subregions in random versus goal-directed motor control. These findings underscore the substantial effects of the visual feedback indicating performance on distinct corticostriatal responses, thereby elucidating its significance in reinforcement-based motor learning.

Obesity is one of the major risk factors for metabolic diseases worldwide. This study examined the effects of YC-1102, an extract derived from the roots of Rosa multiflora, on 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. In vivo experiments involved the oral administration of YC-1102 (100, 150, and 200 mg/kg body weight) daily to mice for eight weeks. YC-1102 was found to downregulate the expressions of PPARγ and C/EBPα during adipogenesis, inhibiting adipocyte differentiation and upregulating the expression of PGC-1α for energy metabolism to enhance mitochondrial biogenesis and fatty acid oxidation. It has been shown that daily administration of YC-1102 to mice receiving a HFD prevented an increase in body weight and the accumulation of body fat. YC-1102 administration also reduced TG, TC, and LDL cholesterol levels, as well as glucose and leptin levels, and increased adiponectin levels, thus effectively inhibiting the metabolism of lipids. YC-1102-treated mice showed significant reductions in the mRNA expression of PPARγ and C/EBPα. The levels of PGC-1α involved in energy metabolism increased significantly in the YC-1102-treated mice when compared to the HFD-treated mice. According to the findings of this study, YC-1102 has a dual mechanism that reduces transcription factors that promote the differentiation of adipocytes and increases transcription factors that promote energy consumption.

We propose a novel power control technique called PC-ECGNN, which uses edge convolution to optimize power allocation in wireless IoT networks. PC-ECGNN leverages interference link distances as edge features and desired link channel gains as initial vertex features, iteratively updating vertex features based on neighbors and edge features. PC-ECGNN is the first technique to incorporate edge convolution into power control and has been customized for the considered scenario, optimizing the neural network structure to provide fast convergence and high performance simultaneously. Experimental results show that PC-ECGNN outperformed the state-of-the-art PC-MPGNN, achieving a 4% increase in average spectral efficiency and a 4dBm reduction in average transmit power compared to PC-MPGNN. Furthermore, our technique demonstrates advantages over existing methods in dynamic environmental changes. The proposed model, trained in a fixed environment, showed minimal performance degradation across various test environments different from the training setting, outperforming traditional models trained in individual environments. When applying meta-learning, the proposed model achieved better performance in each test environment after additional fine-tuning with only 1% of the pre-training epochs, compared to models trained with the full number of epochs in each individual test environment.

Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) refers to the virtualization of base station functionalities by means of cloud computing. With centralized processing at the cloud, the amount of hardware and infrastructure in a network can be reduced and it allows for operators to save expenses needed to deploy and maintain the network. Along with high spectral and energy efficiency, C-RAN becomes a key technology evolving to 5G network and it is also expected to play a critical role in the next generation of wireless network. In this paper, theoretical expressions are derived for throughput performance at Medium Access Control (MAC) layer with and without Cloud Radio Random-Access (CRRA). We first develop a CRRA protocol by accounting for the Multi-Packet Reception (MPR) capabilities afforded thanks to the deployment of C-RAN. We then analyze the throughput performance based on error exponent analysis. Numerical results show the performance advantages of C-RAN and verify theoretical expressions.

A high level of particulate matter (PM) in air is correlated with the onset and development of chronic respiratory diseases. We conducted a systematic literature review, searching the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases for studies of biomarkers of the effect of PM exposure on chronic respiratory diseases and the progression thereof. Thirty-eight articles on biomarkers of the progression of chronic respiratory diseases after exposure to PM were identified, four of which were eligible for review. Serum, sputum, urine, and exhaled breath condensate biomarkers of the effect of PM exposure on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma had a variety of underlying mechanisms. We summarized the functions of biomarkers linked to COPD and asthma and their biological plausibility. We identified few biomarkers of PM exposure-related progression of chronic respiratory diseases. The included studies were restricted to those on biomarkers of the relationship of PM exposure with the progression of chronic respiratory diseases. The predictive power of biomarkers of the effect of PM exposure on chronic respiratory diseases varies according to the functions of the biomarkers.

The detection of all the symbols transmitted simultaneously in multiuser systems using limited wireless resources is challenging. Traditional model-based methods show high performance with perfect channel state information (CSI); however, severe performance degradation will occur if perfect CSI cannot be acquired. In contrast, data-driven methods perform slightly worse than model-based methods in terms of symbol error ratio performance in perfect CSI states; however, they are also able to overcome extreme performance degradation in imperfect CSI states. This study proposes a novel deep learning-based method by improving a state-of-the-art data-driven technique called deep soft interference cancellation (DSIC). The enhanced DSIC (EDSIC) method detects multiuser symbols in a fully sequential manner and ses an efficient neural network structure to ensure high performance. Additionally, error-propagation mitigation techniques are used to ensure robustness against channel uncertainty. The EDSIC guarantees a performance that is very close to the optimal performance of the existing model-based methods in perfect CSI environments and the best performance in imperfect CSI environments.

This study assessed the desired wage guidelines for medical technologists (MTs), mainly primary care providers and those in secondary medical institutions, in 16 cities and provinces in Korea. A survey of 1,327 MTs was conducted using a structured Google questionnaire from August 1, 2022, to September 30, 2022. The wage levels differed according to gender, age, education, career, region, and employment status. There were differences in wage levels according to gender and region with less than one year of career, and the wage gap was relatively larger for woman than man. An awareness of wage compensation appropriate for work performance, and technology value compensation were low at 2.01, 2.23, and 2.30, respectively. This study suggests that primary and secondary medical institutions should provide reasonable wages compensation for MTs’ work in order to create an environment where MTs can receive stable jobs and work. Moreover, the Korean Association of Medical Technologists should establish a cooperative system so that the starting wage of MTs in primary and secondary medical institutions can receive the desired wage of 34 million won.

Abstract Two new models for semantic communication systems are proposed. The first model incorporates the convolutional block attention module, which considers attention techniques in both the channel and spatial domains. The second model applies the efficient channel attention (ECA) network with reduced complexity. Experimental results demonstrate that the convolutional block attention module‐equipped model improved signal‐to‐distortion ratio performance by 25% at a signal‐to‐noise ratio of 0dB while maintaining a similar number of parameters compared to the existing model using squeeze‐and‐excitation network. Meanwhile, the efficient channel attention‐equipped model reduced parameters by approximately 48% without any degradation in performance compared to the existing model.

The symptom of hyposalivation associated with hypofunction of the salivary glands is a common feature of diabetes. Inadequate saliva production can cause tissue damage in the mouth, making it susceptible to infections and leading to oral health diseases. Previous studies have highlighted the harmful effects of methylglyoxal (MGO) and MGO-derived advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in diabetes. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of gemigliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, against MGO-induced salivary gland dysfunction. MGO treatment of immortalized human salivary gland acinar cells induced apoptosis via reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated pathways, but this effect was mitigated by gemigliptin. In vivo experiments involved the simultaneous administration of MGO (17.25 mg/kg) with aminoguanidine (100 mg/kg) and gemigliptin (10 and 100 mg/kg) daily to rats for two weeks. Gemigliptin increased the saliva volume and amylase levels in MGO-injected rats. Gemigliptin reduced the DPP-4 activity in both the salivary glands and serum of MGO-injected rats. Furthermore, gemigliptin exerted anti-glycation effects by reducing the accumulation of AGEs in the saliva, salivary glands, and serum and suppressing the expression of the receptor for AGEs. These actions protected the salivary gland cells from ROS-mediated apoptosis. Overall, gemigliptin protected the salivary gland cells from ROS-mediated cell death, reduced the accumulation of amylase and mucins in the salivary glands, and enhanced the salivary function by upregulating aquaporin 5 expression, and it exerted protective effects against MGO-induced salivary gland dysfunction by enhancing the anti-glycation, antioxidant, and salivary secretion activities. Our findings suggest gemigliptin as a potential therapeutic for patients with salivary gland dysfunction caused by the complications of diabetes.

In this study, a dual-band low-noise amplifier (LNA) was implemented by applying a transformer-based neutralization technology to the W-band. Incorporating the neutralization technique was difficult owing to performance degradation in the W-band. However, circuit performance was enhanced thanks to the layout optimization of transformer-based neutralization networks, and the improved operation was confirmed in the W-band. The neutralization technique was implemented in four stages with a 0.1-μm gallium arsenide (GaAs) pseudomorphic high-electron-mobility-transistor monolithic microwave integrated circuit LNA. The LNA showed small signal gains of 20.3 dB and 21.7 dB and noise figures of 5.0 dB and 6.4 dB (at 84 GHz and 96 GHz, respectively) while consuming 46 mW from a 1-V supply.

This single-blind randomized controlled trial investigated the effectiveness of surface electromyography (sEMG)-triggered constraint-induced movement cycling therapy (CIMCT) in improving balance, lower extremity strength, and activities of daily living in patients with chronic stroke. The participants included patients with chronic stroke-induced hemiplegia who had been diagnosed for more than 6 months, with a minimum score of 24 points on the Mini-Mental State Examination and above level 3 on the Brunnstrom stages. The trial lasted 4 weeks and participants were divided into a CIMCT group and a general cycling training (GCT) group. The CIMCT group (n = 20) used an sEMG-triggered constrained-induced movement therapy device, whereas the GCT group (n = 19) used a standard stationary bicycle. The primary outcome measures showed a significant increase in muscle strength on the affected side in the CIMCT group, as assessed by a manual muscle tester (p < 0.05), with a large effect size (d = 1.86), while no meaningful improvement was observed in the GCT group. Both groups demonstrated significant improvements in dynamic balance, as measured by the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test (p < 0.05), with the CIMCT group showing superior results compared to the GCT group, reflected by a large effect size (d = 0.96). Additionally, both groups showed significant improvements in balance as assessed by the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and the Functional Reach Test (FRT). The CIMCT group exhibited more pronounced improvements than the GCT group, with large effect sizes of 0.83 for the BBS and 1.25 for the FRT. The secondary outcome measures revealed significant improvements in activities of daily living in both groups, as assessed by the modified Barthel index (MBI), with the CIMCT group achieving a substantial improvement (p < 0.05), accompanied by a large effect size (d = 0.87). This study concludes that sEMG-triggered CIMCT effectively improved muscle strength, postural balance, and activities of daily living in patients with chronic stroke.

Sequential recommender models should capture evolving user preferences over time, but there is a risk of obtaining biased results such as false positives and false negatives due to noisy interactions. Generative models effectively learn the underlying distribution and uncertainty of the given data to generate new data, and they exhibit robustness against noise. In particular, utilizing the Diffusion model, which generates data through a multi-step process of adding and removing noise, enables stable and effective recommendations. The Diffusion model typically leverages a Gaussian distribution with a mean fixed at zero, but there is potential for performance improvement in generative models by employing distributions with higher degrees of freedom. Therefore, we propose a Diffusion model-based sequential recommender model that uses a new noise distribution. The proposed model improves performance through a Weibull distribution with two parameters determining shape and scale, a modified Transformer architecture based on Macaron Net, normalized loss, and a learning rate warmup strategy. Experimental results on four types of real-world e-commerce data show that the proposed model achieved performance gains ranging from a minimum of 2.53% to a maximum of 13.52% across HR@K and NDCG@K metrics compared to the existing Diffusion model-based sequential recommender model.

Hyperosmotic stress caused by tear hyposection is a leading cause of dry eye disease. We investigated the prevention of dry eye disease in corneal epithelial cells and in rats that were induced to develop dry eye disease via unilateral excision of their exorbital lacrimal gland using Sargassum horneri extract (AB_SH) and its bioactive component fucoidan. Oral administration of AB_SH (250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg) and fucoidan (100 mg/kg) was conducted for 7 days. In order to measure tear secretion, phenol red thread tear tests were performed along with corneal irregularity measurements. The apoptotic injury in the cornea and the lacrimal gland was evaluated using TUNEL staining. AB_SH and fucoidan were shown to suppress apoptosis and the expression of apoptosis-related proteins in human corneal epithelial cells under hyperosmotic conditions. Oral administration of AB_SH and fucoidan attenuated tear hyposecretion and corneal irregularity in the lacrimal gland-excised rats. In addition, AB_SH and fucoidan also reduced apoptosis in the cornea and lacrimal gland. This study suggests that S. horneri extract and fucoidan can effectively ameliorate dry eye disease by suppressing the apoptosis of ocular tissues.

Purpose We evaluated the clinical characteristics of patients undergoing cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) examinations over 10 years at a tertiary referral hospital. Methods This retrospective study included 11,087 CMR examinations performed between November 2009 and September 2020. The number of adults aged ≥20 years was 10,648 (72.8% males). A total of 439 children or young adults aged < 20 years underwent CMR (66.5% males). Indications for CMR examinations were classified according to the Consensus Panel recommendations of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR). Results The mean age was 55.9±12.4 years for adults. Forty percent of patients were obese. Leading cardiovascular risk factors were hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, and current smoking status in 28.2%, 19.1%, 13.8%, and 25.4% of patients, respectively. The proportion of stress CMR examinations performed was 57.2%. For children, the mean age was 12.6±5.3 years. Most children underwent a non-stress CMR test. In adults without congenital heart disease, indication numbers for SCMR classes were 5,682 for class I (49.4%), 772 for class II (6.7%), 313 for class III (0.3%), and 4,714 for investigational group (41.1%). In pediatric patients and adults with congenital heart disease, indication numbers for SCMR classes were 539 for class I (80.3%), 62 for class II (9.2%), and 70 for the investigational group (10.4%). Conclusion CMR is most commonly performed in men in their 50s or 60s. CMR may be used as the first-line imaging technique (SCMR class I) in around a half of adult patients and in most pediatric patients.

Abstract Most recent survival prediction has been based on TNM staging, which does not provide individualized information. However, clinical factors including performance status, age, sex, and smoking might influence survival. Therefore, we used artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze various clinical factors to precisely predict the survival of patients with larynx squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). We included patients with LSCC (N = 1026) who received definitive treatment from 2002 to 2020. Age, sex, smoking, alcohol consumption, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status, location of tumor, TNM stage, and treatment methods were analyzed using deep neural network (DNN) with multi-classification and regression, random survival forest (RSF), and Cox proportional hazards (COX-PH) model for prediction of overall survival. Each model was confirmed with five-fold cross validation, and performance was evaluated using linear slope, y-intercept, and C-index. The DNN with multi-classification model demonstrated the highest prediction power (1.000 ± 0.047, 0.126 ± 0.762, and 0.859 ± 0.018 for slope, y-intercept, and C-index, respectively), and the prediction survival curve showed the strongest agreement with the validation survival curve, followed by DNN with regression (0.731 ± 0.048, 9.659 ± 0.964, and 0.893 ± 0.017, respectively). The DNN model produced with only T/N staging showed the poorest survival prediction. When predicting the survival of LSCC patients, various clinical factors should be considered. In the present study, DNN with multi-class was shown to be an appropriate method for survival prediction. AI analysis may predict survival more accurately and improve oncologic outcomes.

Abstract Low‐cost passive reconfigurable intelligent surfaces that provide coverage expansion in wireless communication networks are facing challenges in phase shift optimization due to limitations in acquiring channel information for sub‐channels. To overcome this, a new approach that improves both the convergence speed and overall performance relative to the existing state‐of‐the‐art scheme is proposed. Experimental results in an environment with a Rician factor of 20 showed a 9.3% increase in the average sum data rate, and the probability of the sum data rate exceeding the threshold of 10 increased by 30%.

AbstractCJ Logistics has started to consider opening single new hub facility to expand the current transportation network system. This naturally leads to formulating a research question “where should the new hub facility be located in South Korea to minimize total transportation cost of the network system operated by the company?”. This research aims to answer the question by proposing a surrogate-based optimization approach. In addition to finding an optimal location of the new hub facility, this research performs sensitivity analysis to study the correlation between hub capacity (i.e., the source of uncertainty) and transportation cost. The results indicate that (1) total transportation cost after the establishment of the new hub facility at the optimal location is reduced by approximately 14% compared to the current transportation network system and (2) the currently operated hub facility located in Daejeon has the greatest influence on total transportation cost; while the existing hub facilities located in Cheongwon, Yongin, and Gunpo have little impact on total transportation cost after the construction of the new hub facility. It is expected that the outcome of this research helps the company systematically manage the transportation network system when the new hub facility is constructed.

Background Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections often have macrovascular or microvascular thrombosis and inflammation, which are known to be associated with a poor prognosis. Heparin has been hypothesized that administration of heparin with treatment dose rather than prophylactic dose for prevention of deep vein thrombosis in COVID-19 patients. Methods Studies comparing therapeutic or intermediate anticoagulation with prophylactic anticoagulation in COVID-19 patients were eligible. Mortality, thromboembolic events, and bleeding were the primary outcomes. PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and KMbase were searched up to July 2021. A meta-analysis was performed using random-effect model. Subgroup analysis was conducted according to disease severity. Results Six randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with 4,678 patients and four cohort studies with 1,080 patients were included in this review. In the RCTs, the therapeutic or intermediate anticoagulation was associated with significant reductions in the occurrence of thromboembolic events (5 studies, n=4,664; relative risk [RR], 0.72; P=0.01), and a significant increase in bleeding events (5 studies, n=4,667; RR, 1.88; P=0.004). In the moderate patients, therapeutic or intermediate anticoagulation was more beneficial than prophylactic anticoagulation in terms of thromboembolic events, but showed significantly higher bleeding events. In the severe patients, the incidence of thromboembolic and bleeding events in the therapeutic or intermediate. Conclusions The study findings suggest that prophylactic anticoagulant treatment should be used in patients with moderate and severe COVID-19 infection groups. Further studies are needed to determine more individualized anticoagulation guidance for all COVID-19 patients.

Abstract Insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) has been known to inhibit cell proliferation and exert tumor-suppressing effects depending on the cell type. In this study, we aimed to show that IGFBP-3 induces cellular senescence via suppression of the telomerase activity, thereby inhibiting MCF-7 breast cancer cell proliferation. We found that the induction of IGFBP-3 in MCF-7 cells enhanced the loss of cell viability. Flow cytometry revealed a higher percentage of non-cycling cells among IGFBP-3-expressing cells than among controls. IGFBP-3 induction also resulted in morphological alterations, such as a flattened cytoplasm and increased granularity, suggesting that IGFBP-3 induces a senescence-like phenotype. The percentage of IGFBP-3 expressing cells with senescence-associated β-galactosidase activity was 3.4 times higher than control cells. Telomeric repeat amplification and real-time PCR showed that IGFBP-3 decreased telomerase activity by reducing the levels of the RNA component (hTR) and catalytic protein component with reverse transcriptase activity (hTERT) of telomerase in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that IGFBP-3 is a negative regulator of MCF-7 breast cancer cell growth by inducing senescence through telomerase suppression.

The purpose of this study is to examine the geographical patterns of adjuvant hormonal therapy adherence and persistence and the associated factors in insured Texan women aged 18–64 with early breast cancer. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using 5-year claims data for the population insured by the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX). Women diagnosed with early breast cancer who were taking tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors (AIs) for adjuvant hormonal therapy with at least one prescription claim were identified. Adherence to adjuvant hormonal therapy and persistence with adjuvant hormonal therapy were calculated as outcome measures. Women without a gap between two consecutively dispensed prescriptions of at least 90 days were considered to be persistently taking the medications. Patient-level multivariate logistic regression models with repeated regional-level adjustments and a Cox proportional hazards model with mixed effects were used to determine the geographical variations and patient-, provider-, and area-level factors that were associated with adjuvant hormonal therapy adherence and persistence. Of the 938 women in the cohort, 627 (66.8%) initiated adjuvant hormonal therapy. Most of the smaller HRRs have significantly higher or lower rates of treatment adherence and persistence rates relative to the median regions. The use of AHT varies substantially from one geographical area to another, especially for adherence, with an approximately two-fold difference between the lowest and highest areas, and area-level factors were found to be significantly associated with the compliance of AHT. There are geographical variations in AHT adherence and persistence in Texas. Patient-level and area-level factors have significant associations explaining these patterns.

Every existing deep learning (DL)-based detector for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) is optimized for one instance for modulation parameters (MPs) such as the modulation orders and the number of active subcarriers but does not operate well for other sets of MPs. In this paper, we propose a novel index-bit-detection neural network with modulation parameter-independent structure (IBDNN-MPI) for OFDM-IM, which aims to operate with various MPs. IBDNN-MPI adopts a concatenation of Inception module and fully-connected layers to detect index bits effectively. It is shown via simulations that IBDNN-MPI implementations show better bit error rate (BER) performance and less complexity than existing DL-based detectors optimized for each set of MPs. They have BER performances close to the maximum likelihood and the log-likelihood ratio detectors. Moreover, they can be applicable to dual-mode OFDM-IM at slightly increased computational complexity and cover the scenarios with imperfect channel state information.

This paper presents a fast switching and high-powered single-pole double-throw (SPDT) switch for RF switch circuits, such as TRx antenna switches and frequency band (or operation mode) selection switches in mobile handset applications. For fast switching time and performances of the RF switch, we proposed a novel method that can “selectively” control the impedance of a gate biasing circuit (“high” or “low” impedance). The proposed SPDT switch use the low impedance of the gate biasing circuit for fast switching time and use the high impedance of the gate biasing circuit to avoid the degradation of the insertion loss and harmonics. The proposed SPDT switch has no additional bias and no large payment for size consumption. According to measurement results, the turn-on switching time of the proposed SPDT switch was $0.35~\mu \text{s}$ (at 2 GHz). The insertion loss, isolation, and return loss at 2 GHz were 0.16 dB, 47.1 dB, and 24 dB respectively. 2nd and 3rd harmonic levels at 25 dBm input power at 2 GHz were −88.7 dBm and −78.9 dBm, respectively. Power handling capability was 39.5 dBm of input power at 2 GHz. The designed SPDT switch was implemented in a 0.13- $\mu \text{m}$ partially depleted silicon-on-insulator (PD-SOI) process.

Abstract Background Prone position has already been demonstrated to improve survival in non-COVID acute respiratory distress syndrome and has been widely performed in COVID-19 patients with respiratory failure, both in non-intubated and intubated patients. However, the beneficial effect of the prone position in COVID-19 pneumonia still remains controversial. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the prone position compared with the non-prone in non-intubated and intubated COVID-19 patients, respectively. Methods We searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases, as well as one Korean domestic database, on July 9, 2021, and updated the search 9 times to September 14, 2022. Studies that compared prone and non-prone positions in patients with COVID-19 were eligible for inclusion. The primary outcomes were mortality, need for intubation, and adverse events. Results Of the 1259 records identified, 9 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 23 nonrandomized studies (NRSs) were eligible. In the non-intubated patients, the prone position reduced the intubation rate compared with the non-prone position in 6 RCTs (n = 2156, RR 0.81, P = 0.0002) and in 18 NRSs (n = 3374, RR 0.65, P = 0.002). In the subgroup analysis according to the oxygen delivery method, the results were constant only in the HFNC or NIV subgroup. For mortality, RCTs reported no difference between prone and non-prone groups, but in NRSs, the prone position had a significant advantage in mortality [18 NRSs, n = 3361, relative risk (RR) 0.56, P

Esculetin is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound derived from coumarin. Oxidative stress can cause overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can lead to the development of chronic kidney failure. In this study, human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) cells were treated with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP) to determine the antioxidant effects of esculetin. HEK293 cells were treated with t-BHP to validate changes in cell viability, ROS production, and apoptosis, and then treated with esculetin to evaluate the changes. Changes in mRNA and protein levels were analyzed using a proteome kit, PCR, and Western blotting. Esculetin improved HEK293 cell viability and reduced apoptosis caused by t-BHP-induced oxidative stress. At the mRNA and protein levels, esculetin decreased pro-apoptotic factor expression as well as increased anti-apoptotic factor expression. The antioxidant efficacy of esculetin was validated when it inhibited the apoptosis caused by t-BHP-induced oxidative stress in HEK293 cells.

Abstract Multiple lesions in the same vessel is one of the most common situations found in patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases, this complicates not only the assessment of the severity of each one but also their treatment. To date, the effect of multiple stenoses on different parameters has been simulated by numerical studies. Few others have implemented in vitro platforms for their investigation. However, visualization of thrombosis formation in this kind of lesion is still needed. This in vitro study monitors the formation of thrombus inside microchannels having one, two, and three stenoses. Whole blood was perfused through each channel at high shear rates (> 12,000 s−1), generating thrombosis. Flow changes across each lesion as well as the final percentage of aggregations were monitored. Thus, the location where total occlusion could be produced was found to be the first stenosis for all the cases. Less flow reaching the second and third stenoses was observed which demonstrates that aggregations were growing at the first one. This was verified by measuring the percentage of aggregations at the end of the test.

Abstract Background Evidence regarding the timing of the application of mechanical ventilation among patients with severe coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is insufficient. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of early intubation compared to late intubation in patients with severe and critical COVID-19. Methods For this study, we searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases as well as one Korean domestic database on July 15, 2021. We updated the search monthly from September 10, 2021 to February 10, 2022. Studies that compared early intubation with late intubation in patients with severe COVID-19 were eligible for inclusion. Relative risk (RR) and mean difference (MD) were calculated as measures of effect using the random-effects model for the pooled estimates of in-hospital mortality, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (LOS), duration of mechanical ventilation (MV), hospital LOS, ICU-free days, and ventilator-free days. Subgroup analysis was performed based on the definition of early intubation and the index time. To assess the risk of bias in the included studies, we used the Risk of Bias Assessment tool for Non-randomized studies 2.0. Results Of the 1523 records identified, 12 cohort studies, involving 2843 patients with severe COVID-19 were eligible. There were no differences in in-hospital mortality (8 studies, n = 795; RR 0.91, 95% CI 0.75–1.10, P = 0.32, I 2 = 33%), LOS in the ICU (9 studies, n = 978; MD −1.77 days, 95% CI −4.61 to 1.07 days, P = 0.22, I 2 = 78%), MV duration (9 studies, n = 1,066; MD −0.03 day, 95% CI −1.79 to 1.72 days, P = 0.97, I 2 = 49%), ICU-free days (1 study, n = 32; 0 day vs. 0 day; P = 0.39), and ventilator-free days (4 studies, n = 344; MD 0.94 day, 95% CI −4.56 to 6.43 days, P = 0.74, I 2 = 54%) between the early and late intubation groups. However, the early intubation group had significant advantage in terms of hospital LOS (6 studies, n = 738; MD −4.32 days, 95% CI −7.20 to −1.44 days, P = 0.003, I 2 = 45%). Conclusion This study showed no significant difference in both primary and secondary outcomes between the early intubation and late intubation groups. Trial registration This study was registered in the Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews on 16 February, 2022 (registration number CRD42022311122).

Oral dryness is among the most common conditions experienced by the elderly. As saliva plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health and overall quality of life, the condition is increasingly taking its toll on a rapidly growing aging population. D-galactose (D-gal) stimulates their formation, which in turn cause oxidative stress and accelerate age-related decline in physical function. In this study, we observed a reduction in salivary secretion and amylase levels in aged rats injected with D-gal, confirming salivary gland dysfunction. Treatment with gemigliptin increased DPP-4 inhibition and GLP-1 levels in the salivary glands of aging rats and reduced the expression of AGEs and receptors for advanced glycation end products (RAGE). This effect was caused by the presence of additional reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the salivary glands of the examined rats. Gemigliptin’s cytoprotective effect reduced amylase and mucin accumulation and increased AQP5 expression, which are important indicators of salivary gland function. In sum, gemigliptin was shown to improve D-gal-induced decline in the salivary gland function of aged rats through its anti-glycation and antioxidant activities. Gemigliptin shows promise as a treatment strategy for patients experiencing decreased salivary function associated with their advancing age.

Abstract We provide a method to evaluate effects of a lossy and noisy optical channel in computational ghost imaging (CGI) technique. Instead of preparing an external noise source, we simulate the optical channel with a basic CGI experiment using programmatically generated noise-induced patterns. By using our method, we show that CGI can reject a noise of which intensity is similar with an imaging signal intensity at a target. The results with our method are well matched with experimental ones including external noise source. This method would provide useful knowledge to analyze environmental effects in CGI without realization of the environment.

Abstract Combining magnetism with band topology provides various novel phases that are otherwise impossible. Among several cases, noncollinear metallic antiferromagnets can reveal particularly rich topological physics due to their diverse magnetic ground states. However, there are only a few experimental studies due to the lack of suitable materials, especially with triangular lattice antiferromagnets. Here, we report that metallic triangular antiferromagnet Co1/3TaS2 exhibits a substantial anomalous Hall effect (AHE) related to its noncollinear magnetic order. Our first-principles calculations found that hourglass Weyl fermions from the non-symmorphic symmetry trigger AHE. We further show that AHE in Co1/3TaS2 can be characterized by the toroidal moment, a vortex-like multipole component that arises from a combination of chiral lattice and geometrical frustration. Finally, the unusual field-tunability of the toroidal moment puts Co1/3TaS2 as a rare example of a noncollinear metallic antiferromagnet filled with interesting magnetic and topological properties.

Abstract Background The construction and application of synthetic genetic circuits is frequently improved if gene expression can be orthogonally controlled, relative to the host. In plants, orthogonality can be achieved via the use of CRISPR-based transcription factors that are programmed to act on natural or synthetic promoters. The construction of complex gene circuits can require multiple, orthogonal regulatory interactions, and this in turn requires that the full programmability of CRISPR elements be adapted to non-natural and non-standard promoters that have few constraints on their design. Therefore, we have developed synthetic promoter elements in which regions upstream of the minimal 35S CaMV promoter are designed from scratch to interact via programmed gRNAs with dCas9 fusions that allow activation of gene expression. Results A panel of three, mutually orthogonal promoters that can be acted on by artificial gRNAs bound by CRISPR regulators were designed. Guide RNA expression targeting these promoters was in turn controlled by either Pol III (U6) or ethylene-inducible Pol II promoters, implementing for the first time a fully artificial Orthogonal Control System (OCS). Following demonstration of the complete orthogonality of the designs, the OCS was tied to cellular metabolism by putting gRNA expression under the control of an endogenous plant signaling molecule, ethylene. The ability to form complex circuitry was demonstrated via the ethylene-driven, ratiometric expression of fluorescent proteins in single plants. Conclusions The design of synthetic promoters is highly generalizable to large tracts of sequence space, allowing Orthogonal Control Systems of increasing complexity to potentially be generated at will. The ability to tie in several different basal features of plant molecular biology (Pol II and Pol III promoters, ethylene regulation) to the OCS demonstrates multiple opportunities for engineering at the system level. Moreover, given the fungibility of the core 35S CaMV promoter elements, the derived synthetic promoters can potentially be utilized across a variety of plant species.

The successful application of mRNA therapeutics hinges on the effective intracellular delivery of mRNA both in vitro and in vivo. However, this remains a formidable challenge due to the polyanionic nature, longitudinal shape, and low nuclease resistance of mRNA. In this study, we introduce a novel mRNA delivery platform utilizing a human β-defensin peptide, hBD23. The positive charge of hBD23 allows it to form nanocomplexes with mRNA, facilitating cellular uptake and providing protection against serum nucleases. When optimized for peptide-to-mRNA (N/P) ratios, these hBD23/mRNA complexes demonstrated efficient cellular delivery and subsequent protein expression both in vitro and in vivo. Importantly, as hBD23 is human derived, the complexes exhibited minimal cytotoxicity and immunogenicity. Given its high biocompatibility and delivery efficiency, hBD23 represents a promising platform for the in vitro and in vivo delivery of mRNA.

In this paper, a new synthesis of carbon nanofibers (CNFs)/carbon nanowalls (CNWs) was performed to improve the characteristics of anode materials of lithium-ion batteries by using the advantages offered by CNWs and CNFs. Among the carbon-based nanomaterials, CNWs provide low resistance and high specific surface area. CNFs have the advantage of being stretchable and durable. The CNWs were grown using a microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system with a mixture of methane (CH4) and hydrogen (H2) gases. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and N,N-Dimethyl Formamide (DMF) were stirred to prepare a solution and then nanofibers were fabricated using an electrospinning method. Heat treatment in air was then performed using a hot plate for stabilization. In addition, heat treatment was performed at 800 °C for 2 h using rapid thermal annealing (RTA) to produce CNFs. A field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) was used to confirm surface and cross-sectional images of the CNFs/CNWs anode materials. Raman spectroscopy was used to examine structural characteristics and defects. Cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and constant current charge/discharge tests were performed to analyze the electrical characteristics. The synthesized CNFs/CNWs anode material had a CV value in which oxidation and reduction reactions were easily performed, and a low Rct value of 93 Ω was confirmed.

A new interstage matching technique is presented for design of a wide-band multi-stage amplifier using commercial 60 nm GaN-on-silicon technology in the W-band. The proposed interstage matching network is designed as a two-pole conjugated impedance matching approach for wideband characteristics using low-characteristic impedance transmission lines and an optimized microstrip-coupled line. In particular, the microstrip-coupled line provides strong resonance at the desired frequency, enabling optimal conjugate impedance matching of both edge and intermediate frequencies simultaneously. The implemented W-band three-stage amplifier using the proposed interstage matching technique exhibited a small-signal gain above 14.1 dB from 75 to 103 GHz. Also, the output power between 92-100 GHz was greater than 25 dBm, and the maximum output power at 96 GHz was 25.8 dBm. The W-band amplifier was designed with an area of 2 mm $\times1.2$ mm.

A declined salivary gland function is commonly observed in elderly people. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are believed to contribute to the pathogenesis of aging. Although physical exercise is shown to increase various organ functions in human and experimental models, it is not known whether it has a similar effect in the salivary glands. In the present study, we evaluated the AGEs burden in the salivary gland in the aging process and the protective effect of physical exercise on age-related salivary hypofunction. To accelerate the aging process, rats were peritoneally injected with D-galactose for 6 weeks. Young control rats and d-galactose-induced aging rats in the old group were not exercised. The rats in the physical exercise group ran on a treadmill (12 m/min, 60 min/day, 3 days/week for 6 weeks). The results showed that the salivary flow rate and total protein levels in the saliva of the d-galactose-induced aging rats were reduced compared to those of the young control rats. Circulating AGEs in serum and secreted AGEs in saliva increased with d-galactose-induced aging. AGEs also accumulated in the salivary glands of these aging rats. The salivary gland of aging rats showed increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, loss of acinar cells, and apoptosis compared to young control mice. However, physical exercise suppressed all of these age-related salivary changes. Overall, physical exercise could provide a beneficial option for age-related salivary hypofunction.

Drug–phospholipid complexing is a promising formulation technology for improving the low bioavailability of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). However, identifying whether phospholipid and candidate drug can form a complex through in vitro tests can be costly and time-consuming due to the physicochemical properties and experimental environment. In a previous study, the authors developed seven machine learning models to predict drug–phospholipid complex formation, and the lightGBM model demonstrated the best performance. However, the previous study was unable to sufficiently address the degradation of test performance caused by the small size of the training data with class imbalance, and it had the limitation of considering only machine learning techniques. To overcome these limitations, we propose a new deep learning-based prediction model that employs variational autoencoder (VAE) and principal component analysis (PCA) techniques to improve prediction performance. The model uses a multi-layer one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) with a skip connection to effectively capture the complex relationship between drugs and lipid molecules. The computer simulation results demonstrate that our proposed model performs better than the previous model in all performance metrics.

Abstract Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been associated with the development of indirect acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, the causative relationship between TBI and lung injury remains unclear. To explore potential mechanisms linking TBI with the development of ARDS, we characterized the effects of serum factors released following TBI and hemorrhagic shock (HS) in a rat model on the pulmonary endothelial cell (EC) barrier dysfunction, a key feature of ARDS. We found that serum samples from animals exposed to both controlled cortical impact (CCI) and HS, but not from sham‐operated rats induced significant barrier dysfunction in human pulmonary artery EC monolayers at 2 days post injury. Thrombin inhibitor and thrombin receptor antagonist attenuated the acute phase of the serum‐induced trans‐endothelial resistance (TER) decline caused by CCI‐HS serum, but not in later time points. However, both the early and late phases of CCI‐HS‐induced EC permeability were inhibited by heparin. The barrier disruptive effects of CCI‐HS serum were also prevented by serum preincubation with heparin‐sepharose. Pulmonary EC treated for 3 h with serum from CCI‐HS rats demonstrated a significant decline in expression of EC junctional protein, VE‐Cadherin, and disassembly of peripheral EC adherens junction complexes monitored by immunostaining with VE‐cadherin antibody. These results suggest that exposure to CCI‐HS causes early and late‐phase barrier disruptive effects in vascular endothelium. While thrombin‐PAR1 signaling has been identified as a mechanism of acute EC permeability increase by CCI‐HS serum, the factor(s) defining long‐term EC barrier disruption in CCI‐HS model remains to be determined.

Abstract Background The clinical and radiological presentation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is heterogenous depending on the characterized sources of inflammation. This study aimed to evaluate COPD phenotypes associated with specific dust exposure. Methods This study was designed to compare the characteristics, clinical outcomes and radiological findings between two prospective COPD cohorts representing two distinguishing regions in the Republic of Korea; COPD in Dusty Area (CODA) and the Korean Obstructive Lung Disease (KOLD) cohort. A total of 733 participants (n = 186 for CODA, and n = 547 for KOLD) were included finally. A multivariate analysis to compare lung function and computed tomography (CT) measurements of both cohort studies after adjusting for age, sex, education, body mass index, smoking status, and pack-year, Charlson comorbidity index, and frequency of exacerbation were performed by entering the level of FEV1(%), biomass exposure and COPD medication into the model in stepwise. Results The mean wall area (MWA, %) became significantly lower in COPD patients in KOLD from urban and metropolitan area than those in CODA cohort from cement dust area (mean ± standard deviation [SD]; 70.2 ± 1.21% in CODA vs. 66.8 ± 0.88% in KOLD, p = 0.028) after including FEV1 in the model.
