This article investigates aspects of heritage and atrocity by bringing the Japanese case into focus. The dissonant nature of such dark cultural heritage has gained greater attention since the late 1990s in Japan and around the world, though scholarship has been largely limited to the European context. While locating the Japanese making of dark heritage in the context of the decomposition of the Cold War in Asia, I will first examine the process by which specific sites of past violence are transformed into war heritage in Japan. Second, I will explore how changing values and attitudes toward war-related sites causes changes in strategic planning for heritage management. These two themes will be demonstrated through an examination of civic activities to conserve the remains of underground warehouses built during the Second World War in Nagano and Osaka.

우리는 사이코패스들이라면 연쇄살인범, 강간범, 폭탄테러범들을 연상하지만, 사이코패스 가운데에는 범죄형 사이코패스, 성공한 사이코패스 및 일반인 사이코패스도 있다. 사이코패스를 선별하는 방법에는 로버트 헤어(Robert Hare)의 PCL-R이 있고, 또 일반인 사이코패스를 선별하는 방법에는 로버트 헤어와 그의 동료들이 PCL-R을 변형해서 만든 PCL: SV가 있다. 그리고 우리 모두에게는 사이코패스의 성향이 존재하며, 이 가운데 일부만이 ‘사이코패스 지대’에서 산다고 보아야 한다. 그래서 특정 직업군에서 거기에 맞는 사이코패스의 성향이 높다면 훌륭한 직업인이 나온다. 사이코패스는 다양한 원인에 의해 결정된다. “유전자, 가족환경, 교육, 지성, 기회에 의해 결정되며, 그리고 이런 요소들이 어떻게 상호작용하는가”에 따라서 사이코패스의 가부가 결정된다. 그러나 우리는 100여년의 임상연구에도 불구하고, 사이코패스 개념이 아직까지 혼동되고 있으며, 사이코패스의 비밀도 다 밝혀지지는 않았다고 보아야 하며, 전문가가 아닌 사람들이 사이코패스 성향이 다분히 있는 사람을 향해서 섣불리 사이코패스라는 낙인을 찍지도 말아야 한다. 이 논문 2장에서는 사이코패스 개념을 PCL-R과 PCL: SV 및 범죄형 사이코패스와 성공한 사이코패스를 통해서 살펴본다. 3장에서는 사이코패스의 개념의 혼동성과 다양한 의미를 살펴보고, 4장에서는 사이코패스를 일으키는 원인중의 하나인 진화생물학적·유전적 특성을 살펴보고, 5장에서는 ‘사도 바울은 사이코패스인가?’를 다룬다. 그리고 6장의 맺는 말에서는 ‘사이코패스는 치유 가능한가?’와 함께 필자의 논의를 정리할 것이다.

This chapter, as the introduction of the book, treats risk management as a multidimensional governance challenge in need of comprehensive and coordinated responses from all governance actors. It provides a brief review of East Asian risk management systems and frontiers by looking at practices and developments of China, Japan, and South Korea, and discusses the coordination and cooperation among the three countries in risk management. The chapter also offers a brief summary of the following nine chapters.

In current global architectural practices, especially in metropolises such as Seoul, architecture serves the blind logic of economic profit, dynamic consumer culture, and high technology. Architecture is increasingly losing its cultural and spiritual value while desolating cities, the beauty of the land and rivers, and human nature. In the face of this crisis, contemporary architecture needs to develop new spiritual strengths and sensibilities in order to open another horizon.

The Jeju April 3rd Incident of 1948, which resulted in the largest number of casualties in modern Korean history other than in war, was a national tragedy. The complexity of the incident and its importance in Korean history explain the failure to discuss it publicly until the late 1980s. For this reason, existing studies have largely focused on uncovering the truth about this incident. Even though national reconciliation is an important topic in South Korea, a more structured study from a transitional justice perspective has not been undertaken of this violent event that led to a divided country. Thus, this study provides a theoretical framework for the conditioning of the institutionalisation, national narratives and psychological healing that are required to establish national reconciliation. The paper, then, applies this framework to the Jeju April 3rd Incident. Finally, it evaluates the limitations and challenges of national reconciliation in South Korea.

This paper examines civil activities to protect and conserve the underground war-related sites in contemporary Japan. Conservation movements rooted in local communities and centred on the Japanese Network to Protect War-Related Sites are making efforts to transform the dark heritage of war-related sites into cultural property in an attempt to integrate diverse wartime experiences. In delving into the heritage-making practices, I introduce local movements in Okinawa and Okayama. Okinawa hosts the first underground war-related site to become a cultural property, the Haebaru Army Hospital Bunkers, while Okayama struggles to create another one by making the Kamejima Mountain Underground Plant a dark heritage site. I argue that these conservation movements are challenging the homogenising national war memory by attaching ethnically diversified vernacular memories to the underground sites. MJM1968, an actinomycete showing potent antifungal activity, was isolated and identified by 16S rDNA sequence analysis as Streptomyces malaysiensis. MJM1968 showed strong antifungal activity on phytopathogenic fungi such as Fusarium oxysporum, Rhizoctonia solani, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Fusarium chlamydosporum, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides KACC 40693, Alternaria mali KACC 40026, and Pestalotia spp. KACC 40501, in vitro. An antifungal compound was isolated from culture filtrate of strain MJM1968 by a series of chromatographic methods. Treatment of agricultural soil with strain MJM1968 mycelia reduced the native fungal population by more than 60% after 14 days. Treatment of soil with 10 mg/mL partially purified extract lowered native fungal density by more than 80% after 14 days. The compound, which exhibited antifungal activity in a broad range of pH and temperature, was identified as azalomycin F complex by 1H and 13C NMRs. This is the first report on the isolation of azalomycin F complex from S. Malaysiensis, demonstrating a broad-spectrum suppression of fungal pathogens in agricultural soil.

A protein chip was constructed to detect the binding of microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (Mitf) and E-box DNA. Mitf, a key regulatory transcriptional factor of pigmentation-related genes such as tyrosinase, binds to specific sequence (CATGTG) in E-box DNA within the promoter of tyrosinase in the melanocytes. We produced Mitf as a maltose-binding protein (MBP) fusion protein in Escherichia coli, purified it using an affinity column, and immobilized it on beta-cyclodextrin-coated glass plate. Binding of Mitf to its target DNA, E-box oligomer, was monitored by surface plasmon resonance (SPR), SPR imaging (SPRi), and fluorescence-based system. Among these detection methods, fluorescence method was the most reliable. In this method, fluorescent intensity was proportional to the DNA concentration (up to 20 microM) and Mitf (up to 500 microg/ml). Kinetics of DNA binding with Mitf showed Langmuir isotherm, and its kinetic constants were determined. It is expected that Mitf-E-box DNA chip can be used as a screening tool for depigmenting agents in the cosmetic industry.

Edmund Husserl hat in seiner Schrift „Die Krisis des europaischen Menschentums und die Philosophie“1 kritisiert, das das europaische Menschentum daran versage, eine von der „Vernunft“ geleitete Lebenswelt zu schaffen. Den Grund hierfur sah er darin, das die Wissenschaften und die Philosophie von der Lebenswelt entfremdet wurden und nichts zu der damaligen Krisis des europaischen Menschentums zu sagen hatten. Eine Moglichkeit zu einer von der Vernunft geleiteten Lebenswelt sah er in der Uberwindung des naturalistischen Rationalismus der Wissenschaften seit der Zeit Galileis und der Wiedergewinnung des Rationalismus im Sinne des antiken Griechenlands. Diese Kritik verstand Husserl als Vernunftkritik.
