Oriental lacquer sap is attracting considerable attention as a renewable and eco-friendly natural resin with high durability, heat resistance, insulation, insect repellency, and antiseptic and antibacterial properties. However, to ensure excellent coating performance, it is necessary to improve the drying/curing process of lacquer sap with a time-consuming drying time at high humidity [relative humidity (RH), 70-90%] and ambient temperature (20-30 °C). Drawing on an understanding of the polymerization mechanism of urushiol, the main component of the lacquer sap consisted of a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion, and this study presents an eco-friendly additive that mimics the structure-function of urushiol composed of a polar catechol head group and a nonpolar hydrocarbon tail. A photo-curable lacquer sap was thus developed by adding a tyrosine amino acid-based lipid agent (denoted as Y-ADDA), which allows faster and more effective drying/curing at lower humidity while maintaining the nature-derived properties of lacquer sap. Y-ADDA easily coassembles with urushiol in the W/O emulsion droplets, thereby significantly accelerating the formation of a polymer network along with urushiol during water evaporation leading to fast drying/curing under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation at low humidity (∼50% RH). The UV-cured lacquer sap resins showed higher performance in terms of film processing and physicochemical properties compared with that of the lacquer containing only tyrosine amino acids without aliphatic tail conjugation

Synaptic photodetectors exhibit photon-triggered synaptic plasticity, which thus can improve the image recognition rate by enhancing the image contrast. However, still, the visualization and recognition of invisible ultraviolet (UV) patterns are challenging, owing to intense background noise. Here, inspired by all-or-none potentiation of synapse, we develop an integrated device of synaptic phototransistors (SPTrs) and quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs), facilitating noise reduction and visualization of UV patterns through on-device preprocessing. The SPTrs convert noisy UV inputs into a weighted photocurrent, which is applied to the QLEDs as a voltage input through an external current-voltage–converting circuit. The threshold switching characteristics of the QLEDs result in amplified current and visible illumination by the suprathreshold input voltage or nearly zero current and no visible illumination by the input voltage below the threshold. The preprocessing of image data with the SPTr-QLED can amplify the image contrast, which is helpful for high-accuracy image recognition.

Nanostructured flexible electrodes with biological compatibility and intimate electrochemical coupling provide attractive solutions for various emerging bioelectronics and biosensor applications. Here, we develop all-inkjet-printed flexible nanobio-devices with excellent electrochemical coupling by employing amphiphilic biomaterial, an M13 phage, numerical simulation of single-drop formulation, and rational formulations of nanobio-ink. Inkjet-printed nanonetwork-structured electrodes of single-walled carbon nanotubes and M13 phage show efficient electrochemical coupling and hydrostability. Additive printing of the nanobio-inks also allows for systematic control of the physical and chemical properties of patterned electrodes and devices. All-inkjet-printed electrochemical field-effect transistors successfully exhibit pH-sensitive electrical current modulation. Moreover, all-inkjet-printed electrochemical biosensors fabricated via sequential inkjet-printing of the nanobio-ink, electrolytes, and enzyme solutions enable direct electrical coupling within the printed electrodes and detect glucose concentrations at as low as 20 μM. Glucose levels in sweat are successfully measured, and the change in sweat glucose levels is shown to be highly correlated with blood glucose levels. Synergistic combination of additive fabrication by inkjet-printing with directed assembly of nanostructured electrodes by functional biomaterials could provide an efficient means of developing bioelectronic devices for personalized medicine, digital healthcare, and emerging biomimetic devices.

The effect of chemical-composition modification on the chiroptical property of chiral organic ammonium cation-containing organic inorganic hybrid perovskite (chiral OIHP) is investigated. Varying the mixing ratio of bromide and iodide anions in S- or R-C6H5CH2(CH3)NH3)2PbI4(1-x)Br4x modifies the band gap of chiral OIHP, leading to a shift of the circular dichroism (CD) signal from 495 to 474 nm. Seizure clustering is a common phenomenon in epilepsy. Protein expression profiles during a seizure cluster might reflect the pathomechanism underlying ictogenesis. We performed proteomic analyses to identify proteins with a specific temporal expression pattern in cluster phases and to demonstrate their potential pathomechanistic role. Pilocarpine epilepsy model mice with confirmed cluster pattern of spontaneous recurrent seizures by long-term video-electroencpehalography were sacrificed at the onset, peak, or end of a seizure cluster or in the seizure-free period. Proteomic analysis was performed in the hippocampus and the cortex. Differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified and classified according to their temporal expression pattern. Among the five hippocampal (HC)-DEP classes, HC-class 1 (66 DEPs) represented disrupted cell homeostasis due to clustered seizures, HC-class 2 (63 DEPs) cluster-onset downregulated processes, HC-class 3 (42 DEPs) cluster-onset upregulated processes, and HC-class 4 (103 DEPs) consequences of clustered seizures. Especially, DEPs in HC-class 3 were hippocampus-specific and involved in axonogenesis, synaptic vesicle assembly, and neuronal projection, indicating their pathomechanistic roles in ictogenesis. Key proteins in HC-class 3 were highly interconnected and abundantly involved in those biological processes. This study described the seizure cluster-associated spatiotemporal regulation of protein expression. HC-class 3 provides insights regarding ictogenesis-related processes.

As practical interest in stretchable electronics increases for future applications in wearables, healthcare, and robotics, the demand for electrical interconnects with high electrical conductivity, durability, printability, and adhesion is growing. Despite the high electrical conductivity and stretchability of most previous interconnects, they lack stable conductivity against strain and adhesion to stretchable substrates, leading to a limitation for their practical applications. Wearable technology offers new ways to be more proactive about our health and surroundings in real time. For next-generation wearable systems, robust storage and recording media are required to monitor and process the essential electrical signals generated under various unpredictable strain conditions. Here, we report the first fibriform organic transistor memory integrated on a thin and flexible metal wire. A capillary tube coating system allows the formation of a thin and nanograined organic ferroelectric film on the wire. The uniform morphology imparts excellent switching stability (∼100 cycles), quasi-permanent retention (over 5 × 104 s), and low-voltage operation (below 5 V) to the fiber-shaped memory devices. When sewn in a stretchable textile fabric, the memory fiber achieves long retention time of more than 104 s with negligible degradation of memory window even under a constant diagonal strain of 100% that exhibits reliable data storage under tough environments. These results illustrate the possibility of the practical, wearable fiber memory for recording electronic signals in smart garment applications.

Transfer-printing enables the assembly of functional nanomaterials on unconventional substrates with a desired layout in a controllable manner. However, transfer-printing to substrates with complex surfaces remains a challenge. Herein, we show that hydrogels serve as effective template material platforms for the assembly and transfer-printing of conductive nanonetwork patterns for flexible sensors on various topographic surfaces in a very simple yet versatile manner. The non-adherence, nanoporous structure, and molding capability of the hydrophilic hydrogel enable the assembly of conductive nanonetwork patterns on the hydrogel surface and transfer of the nanonetworks onto various flexible and topographic substrates. Flexible strain sensors and pressure sensors that monitor finger motions and arterial pulses are successfully demonstrated using the hydrogel-templated approach. The rich chemistry of polymeric networks, facile molding capability, and biocompatibility of hydrogels could be further combined with additive technology for hydrogels and electronic materials for emerging four-dimensional functional materials and soft bioelectronics.

Objective We investigated the effects of prolonged‐release melatonin (PRM) on idiopathic rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD). Methods In this 4‐week, randomized, double–blind, placebo–controlled pilot study, 30 participants with polysomnography–confirmed iRBD were assigned to receive PRM 2 mg per day, PRM 6 mg per day, or placebo. Medication was administered orally 30 min before bedtime. Primary outcomes included scores from the Clinical Global Impression‐Improvement (CGI‐I) and the Korean version of the RBD questionnaire‐Hong Kong (RBDQ‐KR). The secondary outcomes included RBDQ‐KR factor 1 and factor 2 subscores, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale score, the Short Form Health Survey version 2 score, and the frequency of dream–enacting behaviors assessed using a sleep diary. Results After 4 weeks, there were no differences in the proportions of patients with a CGI‐I score of much improved or very much improved among the study groups. In addition, RBDQ‐KR scores and secondary outcomes were not improved in all groups at 4 weeks, and there were no differences between the groups. Conclusion Our findings suggest that PRM may not be effective in treating RBD–related symptoms within the dose range used in this study. Further studies using doses higher than 6 mg per day are warranted.

OBJECTIVE There is no scale for rating the severity of autoimmune encephalitis (AE). In this study, we aimed to develop a novel scale for rating severity in patients with diverse AE syndromes and to verify the reliability and validity of the developed scale. METHODS The key items were generated by a panel of experts and selected according to content validity ratios. The developed scale was initially applied to 50 patients with AE (development cohort) to evaluate its acceptability, reproducibility, internal consistency, and construct validity. Then, the scale was applied to another independent cohort (validation cohort, n = 38). RESULTS A new scale consisting of 9 items (seizure, memory dysfunction, psychiatric symptoms, consciousness, language problems, dyskinesia/dystonia, gait instability and ataxia, brainstem dysfunction, and weakness) was developed. Each item was assigned a value of up to 3 points. The total score could therefore range from 0 to 27. We named the scale the Clinical Assessment Scale in Autoimmune Encephalitis (CASE). However, strict drying conditions and long drying times of lacquer sap should be modified to expand its applications. This study presents the first attempt to investigate the effect of different amplitudes of ultrasonic waves on the lacquer sap composed of water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion droplets and the mechanical properties of the resultant film by solvent evaporation. Acoustically induced cavitation via batch ultrasonication facilitates the generation of submicron-sized W/O emulsion. The drying time of sonicated lacquer sap was noticeably shortened as the amplitude of acoustic power increased. Interestingly, the transparency of the film cast from lacquer sap consisting of the smallest emulsion droplets increased significantly, weakening the degree of colour change from caramel-like yellow to dark brown as polymerisation progressed. These are attributed to the effective and frequent contact of laccase enzyme with urushiol at the increased interfacial area of nano-emulsified W/O droplets pulverised by ultrasonic waves. The quinone radical-generation in the interface layer and its transfer to the urushiol oil phase through water-insoluble glycoprotein emulsifier are greatly promoted, resulting in highly cross-linked, dense three-dimensional polymer networks, which also increased the lacquer film hardness after drying. As the emulsion droplet size decreased, the mutual interaction between the catechol moiety of urushiol and the substrates increased, resulting in improved adhesion. The nano-emulsification of the lacquer sap by ultrasonic waves can be used in a simple, effective, and eco-friendly way to shorten the drying time and improve the film characteristics of natural resins. This approach could pave the way for its wide range of applications in industrial fields, taking into account green and sustainable chemistry.

Although solution-processed Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2 (CIGS) absorber layers can potentially enable the low-cost and large-area production of highly stable electronic devices, they have rarely been applied in photodetector applications. In this work, we present a near-infrared photodetector functioning at 980 nm based on solution-processed CIGS with a potassium-induced bandgap grading structure and chalcopyrite grain growth. The incorporation of potassium in the CIGS film promotes Se uptake in the bulk of the film during the chalcogenization process, resulting in a bandgap grading structure with a wide space charge region that allows improved light absorption in the near-infrared region and charge carrier separation. Also, increasing the Se penetration in the potassium-incorporated CIGS film leads to the enhancement of chalcopyrite crystalline grain growth, increasing charge carrier mobility. Under the reverse bias condition, associated with hole tunneling from the ZnO interlayer, the increasing carrier mobility of potassium-incorporated CIGS photodetector improved photosensitivity and particularly external quantum efficiency more than 100% at low light intensity. The responsivity and detectivity of the potassium-incorporated CIGS photodetector reach 1.87 A W−1 and 6.45 $$\times$$ × 1010 Jones, respectively, and the − 3 dB bandwidth of the device extends to 10.5 kHz under 980 nm near-infrared light.

Researchers have widely investigated Oriental lacquers to identify the chemical composition and have elucidated corresponding polymerization mechanisms using rigorous analytical techniques. However, researchers generally test the physical properties of Oriental lacquers by conventional methods that are perhaps overly simplistic. Here, we propose accurate and quantitative methods for evaluating the physical properties of Korean, Vietnamese, and Myanmarese lacquer films using atomic force microscopy (AFM), a nanoindenter, and a 90° peel tester. We obtained surface images of the lacquers in accordance with drying time using scanning electron microscopy and AFM. The Korean lacquer film exhibited fast hardening speed, enhanced hardness, and strong adhesion strength compared with the other lacquers, although the Myanmarese lacquer film had a smoother surface than the Korean lacquer film. We used our characterization approach for evaluating a mixed Korean/Myanmarese (50/50 w/w) lacquer. Our proposed measurement techniques for Oriental lacquer films provided results that agreed with qualitative results from conventional tests. Force–distance curves in AFM and force–displacement with nanoindenter for Oriental lacquer films showed more accurate and quantitative data on the mechanical properties. Thus, researchers will find our approach useful when they optimize the chemical compositions and improve the physical properties of Oriental lacquer films for industrial applications.

Asian lacquer is a special polymeric material tapped from lacquer trees. The tree&rsquo, s sap is a complex mixture of compounds, such as catechol lipids, polysaccharides, glycoproteins, enzymes, and water. Researchers have not yet quantitatively analyzed blended lacquers. We evaluated the compositions of Japanese and Vietnamese lacquers, and blends of the two, using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF&ndash, SIMS), pyrolysis&ndash, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py&ndash, GC/MS), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). ToF&ndash, SIMS provided quantitative results for blended lacquers, provided structural information on polymeric lacquer films, and indicated the presence of dimers of urushiol&ndash, urushiol, urushiol&ndash, laccol, and laccol&ndash, laccol derivatives. We used Py&ndash, GC/MS and HPLC to obtain linear calibration curves. The specific peak intensity was a linear function of the ratio of Japanese to Vietnamese lacquer in the blends. For an unknown mixture, all three techniques gave essentially the same results. These quantitative methods will be useful for improving the physical properties of polymeric lacquer films, and evaluating the lacquer quality in industry and historic conservation.

Fiber optoelectronics technology has recently attracted attention as enabling various form factors of wearable electronics, and the issue of how to control and optimize the configuration and physical properties of the electrode micropatterns in the microfiber devices has become important. Here, spirally wrapped carbon nanotube (CNT) microelectrodes with a controlled dimension are demonstrated for high-performance fiber optoelectronic devices. Inkjet-printed CNT microelectrodes with the desired dimension on an agarose hydrogel template are rolling-transferred onto a microfiber surface with an efficient electrical interface. A fiber organic field-effect transistor with spirally wrapped CNT microelectrodes verifies the feasibility of this strategy, where the transferred microelectrodes intimately contact the organic semiconductor active layer and the output current characteristics are simply controlled, resulting in characteristics that exceed the previous structural limitations. Furthermore, a fiber organic photodiode with spirally wrapped CNT microelectrodes, when used as a transparent electrode, exhibits a high Ilight/Idark ratio and good durability of bending. This fiber photodiode can be successfully incorporated into a textile photoplethysmography bandage for the real-time monitoring of human vital signals. This work offers a promising and efficient strategy to overcome the geometric factors limiting the performance of fiber-optic optoelectronic devices.

In anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis, we analysed the efficacy of a combined immunotherapy protocol consisting of teratoma removal, steroid, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), rituximab and tocilizumab (T-SIRT). This cohort study included seventy-eight consecutive patients treated for anti-NMDAR encephalitis between Jan 2014 and Oct 2019 in a national referral hospital. Detailed 2-year disease time course was analysed using Clinical Assessment Scale for Autoimmune Encephalitis (CASE) scores at every 2 weeks for 12 weeks from baseline, every month for the next 3 months and then every 3 months. Treatment regimens at each time point were categorized as SI, SIR, or SIRT with/without teratoma removal (T). Adverse events were classified according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse-Events (CTCAE v5.0), where a severe adverse event was defined as an adverse event with CATAE grade 4. Perampanel (PER) is a new-generation antiepileptic drug that has an occasional but significant shortcoming, psychiatric adverse effects (PAEs). Recently, antiepileptic drug-related adverse reactions, such as skin rash and even PAEs, have been discovered to be correlated with certain human leukocyte antigen (HLA) types. Thus, we aimed to analyze specific HLA alleles as risk factors for PER-PAEs. We prospectively enrolled 17 patients with epilepsy who were prescribed PER between May 2016 and Jul 2018 at Seoul National University Hospital and developed PAEs while taking PER. Their HLA types were analyzed compared to those of 19 patients in the PAE-tolerant group and the general Korean population. In silico docking was performed with two different computational programs, AutoDock Vina and SwissDock, to theoretically evaluate the binding affinity of PER in the grooves of the specific HLA alleles. The HLA-DQB1*06:01, DRB1*08:03, and B*54:01 alleles were significantly associated with the patients who developed PER-PAEs compared with the general Korean population (odds ratio [OR] 3.94, p = 0.008, OR 9.24, p = 0.037, and OR 3.25, p = 0.041, respectively). As a haplotype, the combination of the three alleles was significantly more frequent in the PER-PAE group than in both the PER-tolerant group and the general Korean population. DQB1*06:01 and B*54:01 also demonstrated higher docking scores with PER than other alleles. This is the first study to analyze the association of PER-PAEs with specific HLA genotypes. Our results suggest that an HLA-associated genetic predisposition and a possible immunological mechanism are involved in the occurrence of PER-PAEs.

We demonstrated catechol lipid-based bioresin, which is collected from lacquer trees, to produce conductive pastes that can be processed at low temperatures, which are highly adhesive and multidurable. Our conductive paste, which consists of catechol lipid-based urushiol resin and a multimodal mixture of silver fillers, exhibited stable dispersion with shear thinning properties. The urushiol lacquer induced spontaneous reduction of silver salt at the surface of the silver fillers, thereby contributing to lower the contact resistance between conductive fillers in the electrical conduction. Furthermore, the directional volume shrinkage of the urushiol lacquer matrix in a cross-linking reaction resulted in a highly ordered microstructure of the silver fillers with layer-by-layer stacking of the silver flakes. This structure contributed to the improvement of the electrical contact between fillers as well as excellent mechanical hardness, anti-scratch capability, and the long-term environmental stability of the conductive films. Conductive films based on the silver paste with urushiol lacquer exhibited low electrical resistivity below 4.4 × 10-5 Ω cm, 5B-class strong adhesion strength, and high hardness exceeding 200 MPa. Finally, we demonstrated the facile room-temperature processability and screen printability of the UL-Ag paste by fabricating a printed antenna and three-dimensional (3D) electrode assembly based on a plastic 3D block.

The neural substrates related to periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS) remain uncertain, and the specific brain regions involved in PLMS have not been evaluated. We investigated the brain regions associated with PLMS and their severity using the electroencephalographic (EEG) source localization method. Polysomnographic data, including electromyographic, electrocardiographic, and 19-channel EEG signals, of 15 patients with restless legs syndrome were analyzed. We first identified the source locations of delta-band (2–4 Hz) spectral power prior to the onset of PLMS using a standardized low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography method. Next, correlation analysis was conducted between current densities and PLMS index. Delta power initially and most prominently increased before leg movement (LM) onset in the PLMS series. Sources of delta power at −4~−3 seconds were located in the right pericentral, bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal, and cingulate regions. PLMS index was correlated with current densities at the right inferior parietal, temporoparietal junction, and middle frontal regions. In conclusion, our results suggest that the brain regions activated before periodic LM onset or associated with their severity are the large-scale motor network and provide insight into the cortical contribution of PLMS pathomechanism.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is associated with dopaminergic dysfunction, and iron deficiency, manifesting as low ferritin. However, ferritin levels do not correlate well with demographic data. Based on the hypothesis that very low ferritin can accurately reflect clinical information, we herein described characteristics and treatment efficacy of RLS patients with ferritin levels under 15 ng/mL. We retrospectively reviewed 196 patients and collected clinical data. Twenty-one patients had ferritin levels under 15 ng/mL and were compared with those having ferritin levels over 15 ng/mL. The patients with very low ferritin levels were predominantly female, had earlier onset of symptoms, and showed a superior response to iron therapy. In conclusion, RLS patients with ferritin levels under 15 ng/mL showed distinct demographic features and treatment efficacy. Further studies on more patients with long-term follow-up are warranted to support this observation.

We demonstrate a direct-write patternable water-based poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) composite ink which is capable of providing highly stretchable and washing-resistant electrodes on a fabric substrate for electronic textile applications. An aqueous composite ink consisting of PEDOT:PSS, graphene oxide nanosheets and anionic polyurethane does readily not permeated into hygroscopic fabric, which facilitate direct drawing of fine PEDOT electrode on the fabric without undesired blur effect. This limited permeation of aqueous PEDOT composite ink on the hygroscopic fabric is mainly originated from the intermolecular interactions of anionic polyurethane including hydrogen bonding with water molecules, and charge balancing interactions with PEDOT chains. Furthermore, addition of the graphene oxide nanosheets contributes to enhance the electrical conductivity of the composite by improving crystallization of PEDOT molecules. The PEDOT composite film shows unique structure of the PEDOT nanofibril network embedded by the polyurethane matrix, which resulted in an enough electrical pathway for charge carriers even though only 2.9 wt% of PEDOT:PSS existed in the composite film. The PEDOT composite film exhibited electrical conductivity of 4.6 S/cm, extremely high stretchability of 375% rupture strain, and high durability for repeated washing process with strong bleaching agent. Light emitting diode incorporated on the stretchable spandex with interconnects of the PEDOT composite pattern showed that LED light intensity was almost maintained even with stretching of PEDOT interconnects to 290%.

The aim of this study was to analyze the detailed characteristics of the psychiatric symptoms in patients with anti-LGI1 encephalitis. Of 16 patients, ten showed psychiatric symptoms as the initial manifestations. All 10 patients experienced mood-related symptoms. The time to immune therapy was longer in those with initial psychiatric symptoms compared to those without them. Initial manifestation of psychiatric symptoms in patients with anti-LGI1 encephalitis may be a poor prognostic factor, at least in the short term, in that it misleads both the patients and the clinicians to neglect the typically accompanied symptoms of the disease such as faciobrachial dystonic seizure, delaying the timing of immune therapy.

A real-time sitting posture correction system based on highly durable and washable textile pressure sensors was demonstrated. Textile pressure sensors consisted of conducting Ni-Ti alloy fiber with an excellent fatigue resistance and a pressure-sensitive polyurethane elastomer resulted in reliable capacitance change by an applied pressure in a range from 10 to 180 kPa with a sensitivity of 2.39 kPa−1. The sensing performance was 100% maintained even upon repeated sitting action over 1000 times and harsh washing in detergent-solution. By analyzing the pressure detected at the different positions under the hip, thigh, and back, seven types of sitting postures including upright sitting, sitting with one leg crossed, and sitting with both legs lifted were successfully classified. Finally, real-time display on a monitor of the changes in sitting posture was simulated in order to allow the users to recognize and correct their body balance.

The increasing demand for wearable devices ultimately requires the development of energy storage devices with wide structural versatility, lightweight and high energy density. Although various flexible batteries have been developed based on two-dimensional and one-dimensional platforms, truly weavable batteries with high capacity and elongation capability have not been materialized yet. Herein, we report weavable lithium ion batteries (LIBs) with high capacity by developing fibrous all-in-one electrode threads based on nanosized hybrid active layers with a biological gluing inner layer and a membrane shell. The thread consists of four distinct concentric structures, a carbon fiber core as a current collector, a conductive biological gluing layer, nanohybrid active materials, and a porous membrane layer. Nanosized LiFePO4/C-rGO and Li4Ti5O12/rGO are used for cathode and anode threads, respectively. This unique all-in-one structure combined with an inline coating approach ensures flexibility and mechanical stability with a high linear capacity of 1.6 mA h cm−1. These features all together allow for various assembly schemes such as twisting and hierarchical weaving, enabling fabric LIBs to show 50% elongation via encoded structural deformation.

As future thermoelectric generators (TEGs) require flexibility and mass-producibility, the demand for high-performance TEGs based on printed thermoelectric (TE) materials is growing. Herein, we have rationally designed a bracelet-type TEG structure where the carbon nanotube (CNT) ink is printed in the in-plane direction of a flexible cable and the device is operated in the out-of-plane direction of the heat source. This is the first report to fabricate a flexible TEG by printing the TE ink on a curved surface. For printing the CNT ink on a curved surface, the viscosity, dispersibility, and TE performance of the CNT ink have been fundamentally studied. Especially, the mechanism of the solvent effect on the dispersion and viscosity of the CNT ink during planetary ball milling has been clarified. The flexible TEG based on 60 pairs of n- and p-doped CNT ink shows the maximum power output of 1.95 μW at a temperature difference of 30 K, which is one of the highest power outputs for flexible TEGs based on CNT inks. The ease of installment of the bracelet-type TEG on heat sources with various shapes and its ability to harvest waste heat in the out-of-plane direction of the heat source has great potential as flexible/or wearable power conversion devices.
