1. Coherent Dipolar Coupling between Magnetoelastic Waves and Nitrogen Vacancy Centers

Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate coherent Rabi oscillations of Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) centers by magnetoelastic waves. The coupling is consistent with dipolar stray field drive from spin-wave modes in a ferromagnetic film, and displays a significant improvement in Radio Frequency power efficiency relative to other methods of microwave excitation. Further, it demonstrates coherent coupling with NV centers over mm-scale distances from the microwave excitation source. By utilizing a piezoelectric-magnetostrictive heterostucture, where magnetoelastic waves can be launched by an applied voltage, a pure voltage driven coherent drive of the NV centers is achieved. This voltage driven, magnetoelastic excitation enables a new approach to couple with two level quantum states that is not reliant on long spin-wave coherence lengths., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Updated Affliations & acknowledgements

2. Energy efficient coherent quantum control of nitrogen vacancy (NV) spin with nanoscale magnets

Abstract

We investigate coherent quantum control of a nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond with microwave fields generated from a nanoscale magnet that is proximal to the NV center. Our results show remarkable coherent control with high contrast Rabi oscillations using nearfield microwaves from shape anisotropic nanomagnets of lateral dimensions down to 200 nm x 180 nm, driven remotely by surface acoustic wave (SAW) excitation that is at least 400 times and potentially 4 orders of magnitude more energy efficient than generating microwaves with an antenna. Furthermore, we show that varying the acoustic power driving such nanomagnets can achieve control over Rabi frequency. We also report spin-lattice relaxation time T1 is 103 +/-0.5 micro-seconds, the spin-spin relaxation time T2 is 1.23+/-0.29 micro-seconds, and the Ramsey coherence time T2* is 218+/-27 nanoseconds measured using microwave pulses generated by such nanomagnets. The use of the nanoscale magnets to implement highly localized and energy efficient coherent quantum control can replace thermally noisy microwave circuits and demonstrate a path to scalable quantum computing and sensing with NV-defects in diamond and other spin qubits.

3. Magnetoelasticity for Integration of Quantum Defects

Abstract

Integration of atomic-defect spin qubits into memory or computing remains a challengingtask due to a range of engineering problems, including microwave power delivery and materialcompatibility. While approaches exploiting spin-wave dipolar coupling have been explored inthe past, they are reliant on Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG), a model magnetic material whichdisplays long spin coherence length, but cannot be integrated on-chip except under relativelyrestrictive conditions. Therefore, despite a growth in research interest in recent years, suchhybrid quantum magnonic systems currently remain confined to laboratory conditions.In this thesis, I will present a method by which surface acoustic wave (SAW) driven magne-toelastic waves can be used as an effective near-field antenna for interfacing with spin qubits.Beginning with a set of experiments on resonant coupling of acoustic waves to magnetic dy-namics, we will show that the magnetoelastic interaction acts as linear method of conversionof acoustic waves into magnetic dynamics at high microwave power levels. Following this,experimental results demonstrating a dipolar coupling to the nitrogen-vacancy center in di-amond will be shown, along with a set of conditions under which this dipolar coupling isdominant over incoherent off-resonant coupling mechanisms. With these conditions iden-tified, we implement them and demonstrate the phase-coherent coupling of acoustic wavesto nitrogen-vacancy dynamics mediated by a magnetoelasticity in a ferromagnet. This ap-proach is in theory applicable across a wide range of materials, and offers the capabilityto integrate atomic qubits in a more power efficient manner compatible with commercialnanofabrication.

4. On the coupling between magnetoelastic waves and nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond.

Abstract

We show that a coupling exists between nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond in proximity to magnetoelastic spin waves generated by a voltage driven surface acoustic wave. Experimental measurements show the presence of coupling driven by both dipolar fields induced by a spin wave-like excitation and off-resonant coupling of the NV energy levels driven by acoustically driven ferromagnetic resonance dynamics. A model is proposed based on chiral coupling of the NV centers to the stray field that originates from a propagating magnetoelastic wave in a thin magnet, and model predictions are validated by experimental observations. Understanding of the coupling enables a direct measurement of the stray field polarization, which in turn provides a detailed picture of the resonantly coupled magnon–phonon interaction.
