The COVID-19-related research field has emerged with a number of papers and citations in a very short time period. Journals published COVID-19-related works have increased their impact factor (IF), which reflects the attention on COVID-19. With publications of COVID-19-related works in Web of Science, we found that COVID-19-related papers increased IF of journals but more benefits were given to the high IF journals. Highly cited COVID-19-related papers were distributed in high IF journals. This increases the inequality of IF in research category. In conclusion, our findings imply that IF is vulnerable to external events, therefore it supports to warn the use of quantitative indicators in assessment.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder characterized by sickled red blood cells (RBCs), which are more sensitive to haemolysis and can contribute to disease pathophysiology. Although treatment of SCD can include RBC transfusion, patients with SCD have high rates of alloimmunization. We hypothesized that RBCs from patients with SCD have functionally active mitochondria and can elicit a type 1 interferon response. We evaluated blood samples from more than 100 patients with SCD and found elevated frequencies of mitochondria in reticulocytes and mature RBCs, as compared to healthy blood donors. The presence of mitochondria in mature RBCs was confirmed by flow cytometry, electron microscopy, and proteomic analysis. The mitochondria in mature RBCs were metabolically competent, as determined by enzymatic activities and elevated levels of mitochondria-derived metabolites. Metabolically-active mitochondria in RBCs may increase oxidative stress, which could facilitate and/or exacerbate SCD complications. Coculture of mitochondria-positive RBCs with neutrophils induced production of type 1 interferons, which are known to increase RBC alloimmunization rates. These data demonstrate that mitochondria retained in mature RBCs are functional and can elicit immune responses, suggesting that inappropriate retention of mitochondria in RBCs may play an underappreciated role in SCD complications and be an RBC alloimmunization risk factor.

Purpose: This study focused on generation MZ and the changes in their appearance management behavior following the outbreak of COVID-19. The purpose of this study was to design a paradigm model for the beauty behavior of Generation MZ after the spread of COVID-19.Methods: In-depth interviews among qualitative research techniques were used to examine the changes in the in-depth behavior and psychology of Generation MZ following the outbreak of COVID-19.Results: Generation MZ consumes cosmetics and set appearance management behaviors—along with the use of cosmetics as beauty routines—to solve beauty concerns caused by situational factors (such as COVID-19), thereby expressing an individual’s ideal appearance. Following COVID-19, Generation MZ had a variety of beauty concerns that differed from those prior to the outbreak. To solve these concerns, Generation MZ made changes, such as focusing on skincare and simplifying beauty routines. Following the conclusion of COVID-19, Generation MZ is planning appropriate levels of appearance management behavior, in consideration of the pre- and post-COVID-19 era.Conclusion: The appearance management behavior of Generation MZ has changed significantly since the COVID-19 outbreak. Detailed behavioral psychology has transformed as new beauty concerns have arisen following the spread of the virus. Therefore, it is necessary to plan a new cosmetics development and marketing strategy to satisfy the needs of Generation MZ during the pandemic.

Two novel Gram-stain-positive, non-motile and non-spore-forming bacterial strains, designated J2M5T and J1M15T, were isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of a lake prawn Palaemon paucidens. Strain J2M5T was an obligately aerobic bacterium that formed milky-coloured colonies and showed a rod–coccus cell cycle, while strain J1M15T was a facultatively aerobic bacterium that formed orangish-yellow-coloured colonies and showed rod-shaped cells. Strains J2M5T and J1M15T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Nocardioides ganghwensis JC2055T (98.63 %) and Tessaracoccus flavescens SST-39T (98.08 %), respectively. The whole-genome sequence of strain J2M5T was 4.52 Mbp in size and the genomic G+C content directly calculated from the genome sequence of strain J2M5T was 72.5 mol%. The whole-genome sequence of strain J1M15T was 3.20 Mbp in size and the genomic G+C content directly calculated from the genome sequence of strain J1M15T was 69.6mol %. Strains J2M5T and J1M15T showed high OrthoANI similarity to N. ganghwensis JC2055T (83.6 %) and T. flavescens (77.2 %), respectively. We analysed the genome sequences of strains J2M5T and J1M15T in terms of carbohydrate-active enzymes, antibiotic resistance genes and virulence factor genes. Strains J2M5T and J1M15T contained MK-8 (H4) and MK-9 (H4) as the predominant respiratory quinones, respectively. The major polar lipids of both strains were phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. Additionally, strain J2M5T possessed phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylethanolamine. The cellular sugar components of strain J2M5T were ribose, mannose, glucose and galactose, and its cellular amino acid components were l-alanine and l-lysine. The cellular sugar components of strain J1M15T were rhamnose, ribose, mannose and glucose, and its cellular amino acid component was l-alanine. The major cellular fatty acids of strains J2M5T and J1M15T were iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0, respectively. The multiple taxonomic analyses indicated that strains J2M5T and J1M15T represent novel species of the genus Nocardioides and Tessaracoccus , respectively. We propose the names Nocardioides palaemonis sp. nov. and Tessaracoccus palaemonis sp. nov. for strain J2M5T (=KCTC 49461T=CCUG 74767T) and strain J1M15T (=KCTC 49462T=CCUG 74766T), respectively.

A novel bacterium, designated strain JHSY0214T, was isolated from the gut of a Korean limpet, Cellana toreuma. Cells of strain JHSY0214T were Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, yellow-pigmented, non-spore-forming, non-motile and showed a rod–coccus growth cycle. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the strain belonged to the genus Parasphingorhabdus , and was most closely related to Parasphingorhabdus litoris KCTC 12764T (98.71 %). Strain JHSY0214T had two fluoroquinolone-resistance genes and seven multidrug-resistance efflux pump genes, but did not have beta-lactamase genes and zinc resistance genes compared with P. litoris KCTC 12764T. Strain JHSY0214T grew optimally at 30 °C, pH 7.0 and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain JHSY0214T were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω6c and/or C18 : 1 ω7c; 41.2 %), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C16 : 1 ω6c; 21 %) and C16 : 0 (18.9 %). The major isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone-10. The major polar lipids were sphingoglycolipid and phosphatidylethanolamine. The genomic DNA G+C content was 52.8 mol%. Based on phylogenetic, genotypic and phenotypic data, strain JHSY0214T represents a novel species of the genus Parasphingorhabdus , for which the name Parasphingorhabdus cellanae is proposed. The type strain is JHSY0214T (=KCTC 82387T=DSM 112279T).

Viridans group streptococci are a serious health concern because most of these bacteria cause life-threatening infections, especially in immunocompromised and hospitalized individuals. We focused on two alpha-hemolytic Streptococcus strains (I-G2 and I-P16) newly isolated from an ileostomy effluent of a colorectal cancer patient. We examined their pathogenic potential by investigating their prevalence in human and assessing their pathogenicity in a mouse model. We also predicted their virulence factors and pathogenic features by using comparative genomic analysis and in vitro tests. Using polyphasic and systematic approaches, we identified the isolates as belonging to a novel Streptococcus species and designated it as Streptococcus ilei. Metagenomic survey based on taxonomic assignment of datasets from the Human Microbiome Project revealed that S. ilei is present in most human population and at various body sites but is especially abundant in the oral cavity. Intraperitoneal injection of S. ilei was lethal to otherwise healthy C57BL/6J mice. Pathogenomics and in vitro assays revealed that S. ilei possesses a unique set of virulence factors. In agreement with the in vivo and in vitro data, which indicated that S. ilei strain I-G2 is more pathogenic than strain I-P16, only the former displayed the streptococcal group A antigen. We here newly identified S. ilei sp. nov., and described its prevalence in human, virulence factors, and pathogenicity. This will help to prevent S. ilei strain misidentification in the future, and improve the understanding and management of streptococcal infections.

Background. This study aimed at investigating whether the length of stay (LOS) in the emergency department (ED) is associated with mortality in elderly patients with infections admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Delayed admission to the ICU may be associated with adverse clinical outcomes in elderly patients with infections. Methods. This was a retrospective study conducted with subjects over 65 years of age admitted to the ICU from 5 EDs. We recorded demographic data, clinical findings, initial laboratory results, and ED LOS. Outcomes were all-cause in-hospital mortality and hospital LOS. A multivariable regression model was applied to identify factors predictive of mortality. Results. A total of 439 patients admitted to the ICU via the ED were included in this study, 132 (30.1%) of whom died in the hospital. The median (IQR) age was 78 (73, 83) years. In multivariable analysis, a history of malignancy (OR: 3.76; 95% CI: 1.88–7.52; p < 0.001 ), high lactate level (OR: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.01–1.27; p = 0.039 ), and ED LOS (OR: 1.01; 95% CI: 1.00–1.02; p = 0.039 ) were independent risk factors for all-cause in-hospital admission. Elderly patients with an ED LOS >12 hours had a longer hospital LOS ( p = 0.018 ), and those with an ED LOS > 24 hours had a longer hospital LOS and higher mortality rate ( p = 0.044 , p = 0.008 ). Conclusions. This study shows that prolonged ED LOS is independently associated with all-cause in-hospital mortality in elderly patients with infections requiring ICU admission. ED LOS should be considered in strategies to prevent adverse outcomes in elderly patients with infections who visit the ED.

Mitochondrial function and innate immunity are intimately linked; however, the mechanisms how mitochondrion-shaping proteins regulate innate host defense remains largely unknown. Herein we show that mitofusin-2 (MFN2), a mitochondrial fusion protein, promotes innate host defense through the maintenance of aerobic glycolysis and xenophagy via hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α during intracellular bacterial infection. Myeloid-specific MFN2 deficiency in mice impaired the antimicrobial and inflammatory responses against mycobacterial and listerial infection. Mechanistically, MFN2 was required for the enhancement of inflammatory signaling through optimal induction of aerobic glycolysis via HIF-1α, which is activated by mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I and reactive oxygen species, in macrophages. MFN2 did not impact mitophagy during infection; however, it promoted xenophagy activation through HIF-1α. In addition, MFN2 interacted with the late endosomal protein Rab7, to facilitate xenophagy during mycobacterial infection. Our findings reveal the mechanistic regulations by which MFN2 tailors the innate host defense through coordinated control of immunometabolism and xenophagy via HIF-1α during bacterial infection., Silwal, Kim et al. show that mitofusin-2 (MFN2), a mitochondrial fusion protein, promotes innate host defense through coordinated orchestration of immunometabolism and xenophagy via HIF-1α in macrophages during bacterial infection. This study provides insights into how mitochondria-shaping protein is involved in host defense against intracellular bacterial infection.

Calf diarrhea is associated with enteric infections, and also provokes the overuse of antibiotics. Therefore, proper treatment of diarrhea represents a therapeutic challenge in livestock production and public health concerns. Here, we describe the ability of a fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), to ameliorate diarrhea and restore gut microbial composition in 57 growing calves. We conduct multi-omics analysis of 450 longitudinally collected fecal samples and find that FMT-induced alterations in the gut microbiota (an increase in the family Porphyromonadaceae) and metabolomic profile (a reduction in fecal amino acid concentration) strongly correlate with the remission of diarrhea. During the continuous follow-up study over 24 months, we find that FMT improves the growth performance of the cattle. This first FMT trial in ruminants suggest that FMT is capable of ameliorating diarrhea in pre-weaning calves with alterations in their gut microbiota, and that FMT may have a potential role in the improvement of growth performance., Here, the authors report the results of a longitudinal multi-omics trial of the use of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) to ameliorate diarrhea and restore gut microbial composition in 57 growing calves, and find that oral FMT induces alterations in the gut microbiota correlate with the remission of diarrhea and improves the growth performance of the cattle.

A collider, where particles are injected to a beam splitter from opposite sides, has been used for identifying quantum statistics of identical particles. The collision leads to bunching of the particles for bosons and antibunching for fermions. In recent experiments, a collider was applied to a fractional quantum Hall regime hosting Abelian anyons. The observed negative cross correlation of electrical currents cannot be understood with fermionic antibunching. Here we predict, based on a conformal field theory and non-perturbative treatment of non-equilibrium anyon injection, that the collider provides a tool for direct observation of the braiding statistics of various Abelian and non-Abelian anyons. Its dominant process is not direct collision between injected anyons, contrary to common expectation, but braiding between injected anyons and an anyon excited at the collider. A novel Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, non-spore-forming, coccobacillus-shaped, strictly aerobic bacterium, designated strain H23T48T, was isolated from the faecal sample of an oriental stork collected from the Seoul Grand Park Zoo in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Optimal growth of strain H23T48Twas observed at 30–37 °C, pH 8 and with 3 % (w/v) NaCl. 16S rRNA gene sequence-based phylogenetic analysis revealed that strain H23T48Twas closely related to the genusFlaviflexus, with 97.0 and 96.7 % sequence similarities toFlaviflexus salsibiostraticolaEBR4-1-2TandFlaviflexus huanghaiensisH5T, respectively. Strain H23T48Tpossessed MK-9(H4) as the major menaquinone and C16 : 0(42.4 %), C18 : 1 ω9c(31.3 %) and C14 : 0(17.7 %) as the major cellular fatty acids. The polar lipids included phosphatidylglycerol, two unidentified lipids, six unidentified phospholipids and two unidentified glycophospholipids. The amino acid composition of the cell-wall peptidoglycan wasl-alanine,l-lysine,d-glutamic acid,l-aspartic acid and glycine. The genomic G+C content of strain H23T48Tis 59.5 mol% and the average nucleotide identity value between H23T48TandF. salsibiostraticolaKCT C33148T(=EBR4-1-2T) is 75.5 %. Based on the obtained data, strain H23T48Trepresents a novel species of the genusFlaviflexus, for which the nameFlaviflexus ciconiaesp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is H23T48T(=KCTC 49253T=JCM 33282T).

Purpose This study aimed to investigate whether the qSOFA and initial red cell distribution width (RDW) in the emergency department (ED) are associated with mortality in older adults with infections who visited the ED. Methods This was a retrospective study conducted in 5 EDs between November 2016 and February 2017. We recorded age, sex, comorbidities, body temperature, clinical findings, and initial laboratory results, including the RDW. The initial RDW values and the qSOFA criteria were obtained at the time of the ED visit. The primary outcome was 30 day mortality. Results A total of 1,446 patients were finally included in this study, of which 134 (9.3%) died within 30 days and the median (IQR) age was 77 (72, 82) years. ObjectiveTo improve epidemiologic knowledge of neurologic deterioration (ND) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS).MethodsIn this prospective observational study, we captured ND prospectively in 29,446 patients with AIS admitted to 15 hospitals in Korea within 7 days of stroke onset. ND was defined as an increase in NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score ≥2 (total), or ≥1 (motor or consciousness), or any new neurologic symptoms. Change in incidence rate after stroke onset, causes, factors associated with ND, modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at 3 months and 1 year, and a composite of stroke, myocardial infarction, and all-cause death at 1 year were assessed.ResultsND occurred in 4,299 (14.6%) patients. The highest rate, 6.95 per 1,000 person-hours incidence, was within the first 6 hours, which decreased to 2.09 within 24–48 hours, and 0.66 within 72–96 hours after stroke onset. Old age, female sex, diabetes, early arrival, large artery atherosclerosis as a stroke subtype, high NIHSS scores, glucose level, systolic blood pressure, leukocytosis at admission, recanalization therapy, TIA without a relevant lesion, and steno-occlusion of relevant arteries were associated with ND. The causes were stroke progression (71.8%) followed by recurrence (8.5%). Adjusted relative risks (95% CI) for poor outcome (mRS 3–6) at 3 months and 1 year were 1.75 (1.70–1.80) and 1.70 (1.65–1.75), respectively. The adjusted hazard ratio (95% CI) for the composite event was 1.59 (1.45–1.74).ConclusionsND should be taken into consideration as a factor that may influence the outcome in acute ischemic stroke.

A novel, Gram-stain-positive, non-spore-forming, facultatively anaerobic bacterium, designated strain H21T32T, was isolated from the faeces of an Oriental stork, Ciconia boyciana. Cells formed cocci grouped in pairs, tetrads or conglomerates, and colonies on solid medium were pale yellow. Strain H21T32T belonged to the genus Jeotgalibaca , family Carnobacteriaceae , order Lactobacillales and class Bacilli . The 16S rRNA gene sequences of the strain showed 97.06–97.34, 96.17–96.31 and 95.93–96.07 % similarity to the type strains of Jeotgalibaca arthritidis , J. porci and J. dankookensis , respectively. The strain grew at 10–37 °C (optimum temperature: 30 °C), with 0–7 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum salinity: 0.5 %) and at pH 7–9 (optimum pH: 8). The main cellular fatty acids were C16 : 1 ω9c, C18 : 1 ω9c and C16 : 0. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol. Respiratory quinones were not detected. Sugar components of the peptidoglycan were rhamnose, ribose and glucose. Amino acid components of the cell wall were l-alanine, d-glucose, l-lysine, glycine and aspartic acid. The DNA G+C content of the strain was 37.1 mol%. Average nucleotide identity between strain H21T32T and J. arthritidis CECT 9157T was 77.02 %, confirming that strain H21T32T represents a novel species of the genus Jeotgalibaca , for which the name Jeotgalibaca ciconiae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is H21T32T (=KCTC 33991T=JCM 33222T).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, reddish-orange-coloured, gliding bacterial strain, designated L12M1T, was isolated from the gut of the Korean scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain L12M1T formed a monophyletic clade with the strains in the genus Flammeovirga and showed highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Flammeovirga kamogawensis YS10T (98.66 %). The major cellular fatty acids of strain L12M1T were iso-C15 : 0 and C20 : 4ω6,9,12,15c. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The major polyamines were spermidine, cadaverine and the minor polyamine was putrescine. The DNA G+C content was 32.1 mol%. The phylogenetic, phenotypic, biochemical, chemotaxonomic and genotypic results indicated that strain L12M1T represents a novel species of the genus Flammeovirga , for which the name Flammeovirga pectinis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is L12M1T (=KCTC 62750T=JCM 33169T).

Cultivation and isolation of gut bacteria are necessary for understanding their role in the intestinal ecosystem. We isolated a novel bacterium, designated strain BG01T, from the faeces of a patient with Crohn's disease. Strain BG01T was a strictly anaerobic, rod-shaped, Gram-variable and endospore-forming bacterium. Strain BG01T possessed C12 : 0, C18 : 0 dimethyl aldehyde (DMA) and C18 : 1 ω9c DMA as predominant cellular fatty acids and meso-diaminopimelic acid as a diagnostic diamino acid. Strain BG01T grew at 15–45 °C (optimum, 37 °C), with 0–4 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0–1 %), at pH 6–10 (optimum, pH 7) and was resistant to bile salt, but not to ampicillin, metronidazole, vancomycin and cefoperazone. Butyrate, propionate, oxalacetate and fumarate were produced as fermentation end products from Gifu anaerobic medium broth. Strain BG01T showed 97.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, and 92.0 and 48.5 % of average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNA hybridization values, respectively, with Anaerostipes caccae KCTC 15019T. Genomic analysis indicated that strain BG01T had a butyrate-producing pathway. The genomic G+C content of the strain was 43.5 mol%. Results of the phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic analyses indicated that strain BG01T represents a novel butyrate-producing species of the genus Anaerostipes , for which the name Anaerostipes hominis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BG01T (=KCTC 15617T=JCM 32275T).

Introduction: Clinical implications of elevated fasting triglycerides (FTG) and non-fasting triglycerides (NFTG) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) remain unknown. We aimed to elucidate the correlation and clinical significance of FTG and NFTG levels in AIS patients. Methods Using a multicenter prospective stroke registry, we identified AIS patients hospitalized within 24h of onset with available NFTG results. The primary outcome was a composite of stroke recurrence, myocardial infarction, and all-cause mortality up to one year. Results This study analyzed 2,176 patients. The prevalence of fasting and non-fasting hypertriglyceridemia was 11.5% and 24.6%, respectively. Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may increase the total number of suicide attempts and the proportion of low-rescue attempts. We investigated the factors affecting low-rescue suicide attempts using the risk-rescue rating scale (RRRS) among patients who visited the emergency department (ED) after attempting suicide before or during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods We retrospectively investigated suicide attempts made by patients who visited our ED from March 2019 to September 2020. Patients were classified into two groups based on whether they attempted suicide before or during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data on demographic variables, psychiatric factors, suicide risk factors and rescue factors were collected and compared. Results A total of 518 patients were included in the study, 275 (53.1%) of whom attempted suicide during the COVID-19 pandemic. The proportion of patients who made low-rescue suicide attempts differed before and during the COVID-19 pandemic (37.1% vs. 28.8%) (P = 0.046). However, the proportions of patients who made high-risk suicide attempts and high-lethality suicide attempts did not significantly differ between the two periods. The independent risk factors for low-rescue suicide attempts were age and the COVID-19 pandemic (odds ratio [OR], 1.02; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.00–1.03; P = 0.006) (OR, 1.52; 95% CI, 1.03–2.25; P = 0.034). Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with low-rescue suicide attempts in patients visiting the ED after attempting suicide.
