Finding water resources is a crucial objective of lunar missions. However, both hydroxyl (OH) and natural water (H2O) have been reported to be scarce on the Moon. We propose a potential method for obtaining water on the Moon through H2O formation via endogenous reactions in lunar regolith (LR), specifically through the reaction FeO/Fe2O3 + H → Fe + H2O. This process is demonstrated using LR samples brought back by the Chang’E-5 mission. FeO and Fe2O3 are lunar minerals containing Fe oxides. Hydrogen (H) retained in lunar minerals from the solar wind can be used to produce water. The results of this study reveal that 51–76 mg of H2O can be generated from 1 g of LR after melting at temperatures above 1,200 K. This amount is ∼10,000 times the naturally occurring OH and H2O on the Moon. Among the five primary minerals in LR returned by the Chang’E-5 mission, FeTiO3 ilmenite contains the highest amount of H, owing to its unique lattice structure with sub-nanometer tunnels. For the first time, in situ heating experiments using a transmission electron microscope reveal the concurrent formation of Fe crystals and H2O bubbles. Electron irradiation promotes the endogenous redox reaction, which is helpful for understanding the distribution of OH on the Moon. Our findings suggest that the hydrogen retained in LR is a significant resource for obtaining H2O on the Moon, which is helpful for establishing a scientific research station on the Moon.

Abstract Studying complex relaxation behaviors is of critical importance for understanding the nature of glasses. Here we report a Kovacs-like memory effect in glasses, manifested by non-monotonic stress relaxation during two-step high-to-low strains stimulations. During the stress relaxation process, if the strain jumps from a higher state to a lower state, the stress does not continue to decrease, but increases first and then decreases. The memory effect becomes stronger when the atomic motions become highly collective with a large activation energy, e.g. the strain in the first stage is larger, the temperature is higher, and the stimulation is longer. The physical origin of the stress memory effect is studied based on the relaxation kinetics and the in-situ synchrotron X-ray experiments. The stress memory effect is probably a universal phenomenon in different types of glasses.

Objectives To assess the efficiency, safety, and accuracy of S2 (IS) screw fixation using a robot‐assisted method compared with a freehand method. Methods This is a retrospective clinical study. We analyzed the patients treated with S2 IS screw fixation for unstable pelvic fractures from January 2016 to January 2019 in our institution. Sixty‐three patients (17 men and 46 women) aged between 21 and 55 years (with an average age of 39.22 ± 9.28) were included in this study. According to the Tile classification, there were 26 (41.3%) type B fractures and 37 (58.7%) type C fractures. All patients were divided into robot‐assisted (RA) group (38 patients) or the traditional freehand (FH) group (25 patients). In RA group, the S2 IS screws were implanted with a robot‐assisted technique. And S2 IS screws were implanted with a traditional freehand technique in FH group. The screw‐related complications were recorded during and after the surgery. The position of all screws and fracture reduction was assessed by postoperative CT scans according to the Gras classification. The number of guide wire attempts and the radiation exposure for S2 screw implantation during operation were also recorded. Finally, the Matta standard was used to evaluate the fracture reduction of the IS joint. Results A total of 89 IS screws were implanted into S2 iliosacral joint. Fifty‐four screws were placed by RA (38 patients) and 35 screws were by FH (25 patients). There was no difference between the two groups with respect to demographic data. There was no screw‐related complications or revision surgery in any group. Objective A bone defect rat model was established to investigate the osteogenic effect of local delivery two antibiotics (vancomycin and tobramycin powder) on bone regeneration. Methods Twenty‐four Sprague–Dawley (SD) male rats (6 to 8 weeks, 200 to 250 g) were used in this study. All these rats were randomly divided into four groups. Based on dose conversion between rat and human via body surface area, the rat dose of two antibiotics was 88μg/g and 176 μg/g for vancomycin and tobramycin, respectively. Con group (no antibiotic), Van group (vancomycin, 88 μg/g), Tob group (tobramycin 176 μg/g), and Van+Tob group (vancomycin 88μg/g combined with tobramycin 176 μg/g). A 5.0‐mm full‐thickness standardized mandibular bone defect was performed with a drill in each rat and different antibiotic powders were placed over the bone defect space, respectively. All these animals were sacrificed after 12 weeks post‐operation. The mandible bones were harvested for further radiographic and histologic analysis. The bone volume/total volume (BV/TV) ratio, bone volume (BV), and bone fractional area (BFA) in the defect area via micro‐computed tomography (μCT scanning) were further analyzed. Then, we performed a histological assessment via hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Masson's trichrome staining to analyze bone regeneration and also analyze the number of osteoblasts per filed. Results There were no postoperative deaths, signs of vancomycin‐related or tobramycin‐related toxicity, or signs of systemic illness in any of the four groups. All wounds healed well, and no complications or surgical site infection were observed in all rats. From the μCT scans analyses, there was less bone regeneration in the Van group than in the Con group (BV/TV: F = 64.29, R2 = 0.9602; P = 0.0052; BFA: F = 76.17, R2 = 0.9662, P = 0.0007; BV: F = 194.4, R2 = 0.9865, P = 0.0022). However, when the tobramycin and vancomycin were combined, an increase in bone defect re‐ossification was found in the Van+Tob group than in the Van group (BV/TV: F = 64.29, R2 = 0.9602, P = 0.0033; BFA: F = 76.17, R2 = 0.9662, P = 0.0006; BV: F = 194.4, R2 = 0.9865, P = 0.0033). Routine H&E and Masson staining supported the finding of μCT scanning. Quantitative indices confirmed that both the bone regeneration and the number of osteoblasts per filed in the defect area was higher in the Van+Tob group than in the Van group (percentage of bone tissue: F = 145.7, R2 = 0.9562, P = 0.0008; number of osteoblasts per file; F = 67.3, R2 = 0.9098, P 0.9999). Conclusion For bone defect, local application of vancomycin combined with tobramycin was recommended over vancomycin alone. This animal study presents data suggesting that the use of local delivery of vancomycin and tobramycin should be investigated further in clinical studies.

Strategies to change the properties of metallic glass by controlling the crystallization and the glass transition behavior are essential in promoting the application of these materials. Aside from changing the composition approaches to stabilize the glass and frustrate the nucleation and growth of crystals, new strategies at a fixed glass composition are of special interest. In this review, some recent work is summarized on new strategies to tune the properties of metallic glasses without changing composition. First, the nanocrystallization strategy is introduced that is based on the nanocrystallized microstructures such as those that develop in marginal Al-based metallic glasses. The heterogeneous and transient nucleation effects in the nanocrystallization reactions in Al-based metallic glasses are systematically investigated and can be assessed by the determination of delay time based on Flash DSC measurements. These results provide a basis to understand the strong effect of minor alloying additions on the onset of primary Al nanocrystallization and to design the novel Al-based composites with improved properties. Secondly, by an optimal annealing treatment, a liquid-cooled Au-based metallic glass can achieve very high kinetic stability to yield a large increase in glass transition temperature of 28 K and this is 3-5 times larger than the increase usually reported. The measured enthalpy decrease is about 50% of the difference between the as-cooled glass and the equilibrium crystalline state and reaches the extrapolated enthalpy of the supercooled liquid. Finally, the nano-glass strategy makes an Au-based nanoglass show ultrastable kinetic characters at low heating rate (e.g., 300 K/s) compared to a melt-spun ribbon, which is attributed to the kinetic constraint effect of nanoglobular interfaces. These results indicate that the nanoglass microstructure can act to increase metallic glass stability and provide another mechanism for the synthesis of ultrastable glass. These developments open new opportunities to improve the stability and properties and largely increase the application potentials of metallic glasses.

Objective To evaluate the bi‐planar robot navigation system for insertion of cannulated screws in femoral neck fractures. Method Between January 2016 and December 2016, 60 patients with femoral neck fractures were separately treated using percutaneous cannulated screws assisted by the bi‐planar robot navigation system (robot group) and conventional freehand surgery (freehand group). The fluoroscopy time, the number of drilling attempts, and the operation time were recorded during operations; the dispersion and parallelism of the cannulated screws on the posteroanterior and lateral images were measured after operations. Patients were followed up for 12–24 months and the Harris scores and the final results of the two groups were compared. Results During bi‐planar robot navigation system‐assisted surgery, the fluoroscopy time for acquisition of images was 2.3 seconds on average, and the time for planning screws during the operation was 2.8 min on average. The average fluoroscopy time during the placement of the guide pin was 5.7 seconds and 14.14 seconds (P = 0.00), respectively. The average time of the placement of the cannulated screws was 12.7 min and 19.4 min (P = 0.00), respectively, in the robot group and the freehand group. In the robot group, only one guide pin was replaced during the operation, and the average number of adjustments for each guide pin was 2.39 in the freehand group. The screw parallelism and dispersion measured by postoperative imaging in the robot group were significantly superior to those in the freehand group. From postoperative CT it was evident that there were 5 cases of screws exiting the posterior cortex in both groups. During the follow‐up phase, 1 case of femoral head necrosis and 5 cases of femoral neck shortening of more than 10 mm occurred in the robotic navigation group; 3 cases of femoral head necrosis, 1 case of fracture nonunion, and 2 cases of shortening of more than 10 mm occurred in the freehand group. At 18 months after surgery, the average Harris scores of the patients were 85.20 and 83.45, respectively, with no significant difference. Conclusion Using bi‐planar robot navigation system‐assisted placement of femoral neck cannulated screws can significantly reduce the time of intraoperative fluoroscopy, drilling attempts, and operation time. The placed screws are superior to the screws placed freehand in relation to parallelism and dispersion. However, it is still necessary for surgeons to have a good reduction of the femoral neck fracture before surgery and to be proficient in the operation of the robot navigation system. In summary, the bi‐planar robot navigation system is an effective assistant instrument for surgery.

Pelvic acetabular fracture is a common kind of fracture, mostly caused by high energy injuries. It is associated with high mortality and disability rates. The aim of surgical treatment of pelvic acetabular fractures is to restore the symmetry and stability of the pelvic ring structure and the anatomical structure of acetabular. Open reduction internal fixation is often used for the treatment of such fractures, but open surgery is in cases of serious injury, more bleeding, and high risk of infection. With the development of minimally invasive technology and the concept of the bone channel structure, the percutaneous lag screw technique for the treatment of pelvic and acetabular fractures has been applied in clinical practice and has proven to be effective. However, the anatomical structure of the pelvis and acetabulum is complex, and there are many important nerves and vessels adjacent to it. Traditional fluoroscopy screw placement is prone to screw malposition, and even minor angle changes may lead to screw perforation and damage of nerve vessels. The problem of radiation exposure is also noteworthy. Robotic‐assisted surgery can be used to carry out screw position planning through preoperative imaging, intraoperative real‐time tracking, and mechanical arm assistance to ensure that the screw placement position is consistent with the planning. In this way, robotic‐assisted surgery can be used to accurately insert lag screws, and can reduce surgical risk and radiation exposure. This guide uses the TiRobot system as an example to describe the application of robot surgery in detail, aiming at standardizing the application of robots in orthopaedic surgery.

Femoral neck fractures are among the most common fractures in orthopaedics. There are many surgical methods for the treatment of femoral neck fracture. Percutaneous cannulated lag screw fixation for the treatment of femoral neck fractures is favored by orthopaedic doctors because of its characteristics of being minimally invasive, with less bleeding and firm fixation. However, traditional freehand screw placement is limited by many factors, and the screw malposition rate is very high, which directly leads to the reduction of its biomechanical stability, and even leads to the ischemic necrosis of the femoral head caused by damage to blood vessels. In addition, excessive attempts to drill holes can damage cancellous bone and affect the screw's holding force, which reduces the stability of internal fixation and increases the risk of failure. At the same time, too much radiation exposure to medical personnel and patients also causes great damage to the body. Robot‐assisted orthopaedic surgery combines the mechanical “eye” (an infrared ray tracking device) and the mechanical “hand” (six degrees of freedom mechanical arm), and through the process of preoperative planning, intraoperative assistance in screw placement, and postoperative confirmation, provides a more minimally invasive and precise treatment method for this kind of surgery, and significantly reduces radiation exposure. This guide uses the TiRobot system as an example to describe the robot surgery in detail, aiming at standardizing the application of robots in orthopaedic surgery.

It is imperative for manufacturing systems to improve production quality not only to maintain profitability, market share and competitiveness, but also to reduce energy waste resulted from defective items. Although quality and energy saving have attracted extensive attention in the past few decades, there is little research effort devoted to a systematic understanding of their intersection. Therefore, this paper analyzes the energy usage of a multistage production system with quality control. The Geometric reliability and Bernoulli quality models are assumed. A Markov process model is established to predict the dynamics of the production system. The energy economics of the production system are analyzed to include both production and energy cost. The optimal PWQ (Production with Quality Inspection) machine allocation method and the cost-effectiveness analysis method are formulated to increase the profit. According to the computational experiments, the proposed optimal PWQ machine allocation method can effectively reduce energy consumption. In addition, pay-back period (PBP) is an effective indicator which helps production managers make cost effective decisions for machine replacement. The research results in an in-depth understanding of the energy economics of systems with quality control, which is necessary for manufacturers to gain competitiveness with better product quality and higher energy efficiency.

In this work, a series of Gd-based amorphous/crystalline composite fibers (ANCFs) were prepared by regulating the Gd content in Gd-Co-Al alloys using the melt-extracted method. Compared to the amorphous alloy, the ANCFs display excellent magnetic refrigeration capacity (RC). Among them, Gd85Co5Al10 ANCF had the largest RC (841 J kg−1) and the widest working temperature range (245 K). Compared with Gd70Co10Al20, RC and working temperature range increased by 56% and 119%, respectively. This superior property is attributed to the ideal coupling between the amorphous phase and the crystalline. This result opens a new door to optimize the magnetic refrigeration capacity by controlling the amorphous crystalline composite structure.

Background: Sacroiliac (SI) screw fixation is a demanding technique, with a high rate of screw malposition due to the complex pelvic anatomy. TiRobot™ is an orthopedic surgery robot which can be used for SI screw fixation. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of robot-assisted placement of SI screws compared with a freehand technique. Methods: Thirty patients requiring posterior pelvic ring stabilization were randomized to receive freehand or robot-assisted SI screw fixation, between January 2016 and June 2016 at Beijing Jishuitan Hospital. Forty-five screws were placed at levels S1 and S2. In both methods, the primary end point screw position was assessed and classified using postoperative computed tomography. Fisher's exact probability test was used to analyze the screws' positions. Secondary end points, such as duration of trajectory planning, surgical time after reduction of the pelvis, insertion time for guide wire, number of guide wire attempts, and radiation exposure without pelvic reduction, were also assessed. Results: Twenty-three screws were placed in the robot-assisted group and 22 screws in the freehand group; no postoperative complications or revisions were reported. The excellent and good rate of screw placement was 100% in the robot-assisted group and 95% in the freehand group. The P value (0.009) showed the same superiority in screw distribution. The fluoroscopy time after pelvic reduction in the robot-assisted group was significantly shorter than that in the freehand group (median [Q1, Q3]: 6.0 [6.0, 9.0] s vs. median [Q1, Q3]: 36.0 [21.5, 48.0] s; χ2 = 13.590, respectively, P < 0.001); no difference in operation time after reduction of the pelvis was noted (χ2 = 1.990, P = 0.158). Time for guide wire insertion was significantly shorter for the robot-assisted group than that for the freehand group (median [Q1, Q3]: 2.0 [2.0, 2.7] min vs. median [Q1, Q3]: 19.0 [15.5, 45.0] min; χ2 = 20.952, respectively, P < 0.001). The number of guide wire attempts in the robot-assisted group was significantly less than that in the freehand group (median [Q1, Q3]: 1.0 [1.0,1.0] time vs. median [Q1, Q3]: 7.0 [1.0, 9.0] times; χ2 = 15.771, respectively, P < 0.001). The instrumented SI levels did not differ between both groups (from S1 to S2, χ2 = 4.760, P = 0.093). Conclusions: Accuracy of the robot-assisted technique was superior to that of the freehand technique. Robot-assisted navigation is safe for unstable posterior pelvic ring stabilization, especially in S1, but also in S2. SI screw insertion with robot-assisted navigation is clinically feasible.

Shenfu bituminous coal (SFBC), Geting coal (GTC), Shengli lignite (SLL), and Holingola coal (HLGLC) were oxidized by UV light radiation with aqueous H2O2 over SFC/TiO2 in a closed suspension system (CSS) to understand structural characteristics of 4 typical Chinese coals. Raw and oxidized coals were dried and extracted with acetone thoroughly to ensure residue extraction. Meanwhile, the extracts were analyzed using a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer. The results show that organic matters (OMs) in coals can be converted into a large number of oxygen-containing organic compounds (OCOCs), mainly containing ketones, esters, alcohols, etc. Oxidizing species such as hydroxyls, hydroperoxyl, and alkyl radicals are excited by light irradiation and substitute for hydrogen atoms of methyls and methylenes of acenes or branched-chain alkanes in coals. Acetic acid and acetaldehyde can be formed and dissolved in aqueous solution in the oxidation reaction. The yields can be improved with the enhancement of the oxidation effect.

In this work, the biomedical applicability and physical properties of magnesium-based metallic glass/polycaprolactone (PCL) composites are explored. The composites were fabricated via mechanical alloying and subsequent coextrusion. The coextrusion process was carried out at a temperature near to the supercooled liquid region of the metallic glass and the viscous region of the polymer. The structures, as well as thermal and mechanical properties of the obtained samples were characterized, and in vivo investigations were undertaken. The composite samples possess acceptable thermal and mechanical properties. Tensile tests indicate the ability of the composites to withstand more than 100% deformation. In vivo studies reveal that the composites are biologically compatible and could be promising for biomedical applications.

Relaxation dynamics in nonlinear response regime have become an emerging novel tool to study the dynamics and structure of glassy materials. It provides additional insights relative to the standard linear response experiments. However, limited by inherent endurance of the materials to external fields, up to now, almost all the probed nonlinear effects are very weak. Here, strong nonlinear effects are observed in magnetic systems with disordered spins (i.e. magnetic glass). In particular, we report a pronounced fragility transition as driven by the external magnetic field as a result of nonlinear dynamic response. Such model systems provide a new platform to study the glassy dynamics with large and tunable nonlinearity.

Background: Old pelvis fractures are among the most challenging fractures to treat because of their complex anatomy, difficult-to-access surgical sites, and the relatively low incidence of such cases. Proper evaluation and surgical planning are necessary to achieve the pelvic ring symmetry and stable fixation of the fracture. The goal of this study was to assess the use of three-dimensional (3D) printing techniques for surgical management of old pelvic fractures. Methods: First, 16 dried human cadaveric pelvises were used to confirm the anatomical accuracy of the 3D models printed based on radiographic data. Next, nine clinical cases between January 2009 and April 2013 were used to evaluate the surgical reconstruction based on the 3D printed models. The pelvic injuries were all type C, and the average time from injury to reconstruction was 11 weeks (range: 8-17 weeks). The workflow consisted of: (1) Printing patient-specific bone models based on preoperative computed tomography (CT) scans, (2) virtual fracture reduction using the printed 3D anatomic template, (3) virtual fracture fixation using Kirschner wires, and (4) preoperatively measuring the osteotomy and implant position relative to landmarks using the virtually defined deformation. These models aided communication between surgical team members during the procedure. This technique was validated by comparing the preoperative planning to the intraoperative procedure. Results: The accuracy of the 3D printed models was within specification. Production of a model from standard CT DICOM data took 7 hours (range: 6-9 hours). Preoperative planning using the 3D printed models was feasible in all cases. Good correlation was found between the preoperative planning and postoperative follow-up X-ray in all nine cases. The patients were followed for 3-29 months (median: 5 months). The fracture healing time was 9-17 weeks (mean: 10 weeks). No delayed incision healing, wound infection, or nonunions occurred. The results were excellent in two cases, good in five, and poor in two based on the Majeed score. Conclusions: The 3D printing planning technique for pelvic surgery was successfully integrated into a clinical workflow to improve patient-specific preoperative planning by providing a visual and haptic model of the injury and allowing patient-specific adaptation of each osteosynthesis implant to the virtually reduced pelvis.

Copper-based materials are common industrial products which have been broadly applied to the fields of powder metallurgy, electrical contact, and heat exchangers, etc. However, the ease of surface oxidation limits the durability and effectiveness of copper-based components. Here, we have developed a powder metallurgy process to fabricate graphene/copper composites using copper powders which were first deposited with graphene layers by thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The graphene/copper composites embedded with an interconnected graphene network was then able to be obtained by vacuum hot-pressing. After thermal oxidation (up to 220 °C) in humid air for several hours, we found that the degree of surface oxidation of our samples was much less than that of their pure Cu counterpart and our samples produced a much smaller increase of interfacial contact resistance when used as electrical contact materials. As a result, our graphene/copper composites showed a significant enhancement of oxidation resistance ability (≈5.6 times) compared to their pure Cu counterpart, thus offering potential applications as novel electrical contact materials.

Nonexponential relaxations are universal characteristics for glassy materials. There is a well-known hypothesis that nonexponential relaxation peaks are composed of a series of exponential events, which have not been verified. In this Letter, we discover the exponential relaxation events during the recovery process using a high-precision nanocalorimetry, which are universal for metallic glasses and organic glasses. The relaxation peaks can be well fitted by the exponential Debye function with a single activation energy. The activation energy covers a broad range from α relaxation to β relaxation and even the fast γ/β′ relaxation. We obtain the complete spectrum of the exponential relaxation peaks over a wide temperature range from 0.63Tg to 1.03Tg, which provides solid evidence that nonexponential relaxation peaks can be decomposed into exponential relaxation units. Furthermore, the contribution of different relaxation modes in the nonequilibrium enthalpy space is measured. These results open a door for developing the thermodynamics of nonequilibrium physics and for precisely modulating the properties of glasses by controlling the relaxation modes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
